The London Boat Show already seems like a distant memory, but with the big changes made to the event this year, shortening it from 10 days to five and combining other shows, it seems like a good time to reflect on how it went. We were there for four out of the five days and I am happy to report that it had a very upbeat feel to it. The hall was thronging with visitors, especially at

the weekend, and most of the exhibitors I spoke with were very happy with the new format. Could this be the turning point? I sincerely hope so. London for me marks the start of the new season, and reinvigorates my enthusiasm for all things boaty. It’s also a great opportunity to see the latest innovations in boat design, and the clever new kit, such as the Lifecord electronic kill cord (pg 28). Let’s hope

that the new format will bring a few exhibitors back, and also that the positive experience I feel most visitors had this year will be spread around marinas and yacht clubs to ensure that visitor numbers also increase. I am sure that Mark Twain would declare that “the death of the London Boat Show has been greatly exaggerated”. With the new season in mind, we are putting the final touches to the itinerary of the Motorboat Owner Summer Cruise in Company to the West Country. As I write, we have just two spaces remaining so, if you would like to join us for a two week cruise in July, turn to page 70 to find out more and get booking. Talking of cruising, I have just made a pledge to visit the subject of this month’s Destination Guide. Despite being on our doorstep, and visiting many times by road, I have never taken a boat to the historic Essex town of Maldon. 2018 will be the year that I tick that one off the bucket list.

NEWS Petition for CO alarms on inland cruisers An online petition has been set up, as a plea to the government, to make it a requirement for cabin boats using UK inland waterways to have a Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector fitted. The petition’s stark description, by creator, Niki Molnar MBE, states ‘The Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm Regulations 2015 refer to rented properties, but the number of deaths from Carbon Monoxide poisoning on boats is increasing. Each year boaters die or are made seriously ill from CO poisoning. Boats are built to keep water out, but this also traps gases and fumes.’ With a deadline of 3rd July 2018, the petition requires 10,000 signatures to gain a response from the government, and 100,000 signatures before it will be considered for debate in Parliament. Having a CO alarm fitted is not currently part of the Boat Safety Certificate (BSS), which is a boat-equivalent of an MOT certificate and a requirement for an inland boating license, through waterways bodies such as the Environment Agency, Canal & River Trust and Scottish Canals.

Mercury Owners Club

Mercury outboard supplier, EP Barrus has launched the Mercury Owners Club UK. Open to all UK-based Mercury users, the club will be a platform to discuss, share and seek advice, to also see news and take part in events. Owners can sign up via the club’s facebook page, where they will need to enter their engine serial number. This can be found on top of the steering bracket (visible through the carry handle) on 2.5-10hp models and, on larger outboards, on the starboard side of this bracket. 6

New operator at Newhaven Marina Marina Projects Ltd has been appointed as the operator of Newhaven Marina in East Sussex. Conveniently located between Brighton and Eastbourne, the 300-berth marina is popular with motorboaters but is in need of improvement. Marina Projects specialises in the consultancy, development and management of marina and boatyard schemes, and its portfolio includes Whitehaven Marina in Cumbria and James Watt Dock Marina in Scotland. Executive Chairman of Marina Projects Ltd, Geoff Phillips, said “I am delighted that Marina Projects will be operating Newhaven Marina and together with my colleagues and marina staff look forward to meeting all the berthholders and commercial tenants as we prepare for the year ahead.” Marina Projects added ‘We recognise that our customers at Newhaven are predominantly motorboaters and we look forward to improving the current facilities for them in the future’.

Boat insurance to cover pets at sea The insurance company, Navigators & General (N&G), has added pet cover to its comprehensive boat insurance policy. ‘With an increasing number of boat owners taking their animals on day trips and holidays under the government’s Pet Travel Scheme, we want to protect against mishaps and accidents onboard, in the worst case, a fall overboard that may require a visit to a vet’ N&G said. Pet cover will form part of its comprehensive Yacht and Motorboat protection at ‘no added cost’, a policy for vessels of up to £1m in value who cruise in a range of UK and European waters. Marina of the Year Awards 2018 The Yacht Harbour Association (TYHA) announced the winners of the NMU Marina of the Year Awards at the London Boat Show. With votes cast by berthholders, the awards saw 160 Gold Anchor accredited marinas across the globe whittled down into five winning categories. The UK Coastal Marina St Helier Marina in Jersey scooped up the award of the Year 2018 with over 250 for Coastal Marina of the Year (over 250 berths) berths catergory was won by St Helier Marina in Jersey, while Inverness Marina in Scotland collected the UK Coastal Marina of the Year with under 250 berths award. For the second year in a row Church Minshull Aqueduct Marina was announced as the UK Inland Marina of the Year. International Marina of the Year 2018 was awarded to the Royal Cork Yacht Club in Ireland and Superyacht Marina of the year category was won by The Pavilion Marina at Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai.

Ocqueteau Ostrea 800 Outboard NEW BOAT The French builder, Ocqueteau has launched a new Ostrea 800 Outboard, which will be available in Pilothouse or T-Top version. The new model can be fitted with a single outboard up to 300hp, and Ocqueteau claim it will offer 30 knots with a 150hp and 45 knots with a 300 hp. This 25ft dayboat-cum-fisher has flat, walk-around decks which are enclosed by high bulwarks. Its large cockpit has numerous, lockers and a wet bait tank, while its pilothouse can seat up to four people and converts into two berths. 8

Premier Marinas introduced Premier Marine Insurance ten years ago, but now believes that working with GJW Direct, will make the service more competitive, offering ‘customer benefits, personal service and value for money in a crowded market’. Premier Marinas Customer Experience Director, Andy Mills, said ‘Our background in facilitating repairs in our yards gives us a deep understanding of what Premier customers want from their boat cover and how they expect to be treated when things go wrong. In our search for a new insurance partner we looked for marine specialists who could provide demonstrably good service, priority claims handling and competitive pricing.’ Founded in 1826, GJW Direct is a recognised marine insurance provider and is part of Munich Re Specialty Group. From January 2018, Premier Marine Insurance will be administered by GJW Direct underwriters and claims handlers.

Brokers commitment to customers safety Clarke & Carter Kent has reached an agreement with H2eau Sports Ltd to supply every customer purchasing a motorboat through its sales office with an Overboard Location Alert System (OLAS), free of charge. OLAS Tags worn by crew members, children and pets, pair with your phone or tablet and, in a man overboard situation, sounds an alarm and records the latitude and longitude of the incident on your device. Managing Director of Clarke & Carter Kent, Peter Norris, said “Customers safety is always on our mind and we are always monitoring developments in the industry. We see OLAS as a very cost effective and efficient system that can be easily worn by a skipper, or crew member and can also be used on any yacht or motorboat, as it is not vessel dependent”. 10

The Beaulieu River in the western Solent is now more accessible at night, due to a number of new lit navigation buoys being installed and additional lights added to some existing navigational marks. Work was completed in December and the Beaulieu River harbour authority has advised that the new buoyage is slightly in from the withies to give a minimum charted depth of 1m. Buoy positions and light characteristics can be found on the Harbour Notices page on the Beaulieu River website.

Norfolk Yacht Agency acquires Alpha Craft site The Broads-based boat sales firm, Norfolk Yacht Agency (NYA) continues to expand its base at Brundall and has recently completed the purchase of the neighbouring, ex Alpha Craft site on the Brundall Riverside Estate. NYA said ‘The acquisition gives us much needed, extra-large boat moorings. We are currently awaiting planning consent before making improvements to the mooring basins, whilst the yard undergoes a much-needed make-over. The 1½ acre site includes over 10,000 square feet of workshops and office space. We are currently in discussions with a potential tenant for these who will continue with boat building and repairs. The moorings will be re-named, Langford Harbour, in honour of Langford Jillings (Senior), who developed and built over 1000 mouldings on the site during the past 40 years, and made a major contribution to the boat hire business, both locally and throughout Europe.’ NYA has also rejuvenated its other newly acquired site, known as Windmill Harbour, which is next door. Bayliner Ciera 10 NEW BOAT

The US boat builder, Bayliner unveiled its new flagship overnighter in the ‘Ciera’ range at the recent German boat show, Boot Düsseldorf. The new 31ft Ciera 10 is said to be based on the successful Ciera 285, will offer a spacious cockpit with plenty of versatile seating and accommodation for 4-6 people with a separate double mid cabin. The boat will be fitted with a single 350hp MerCruiser 6.2-litre ECT petrol sterndrive as standard. Engine options include twin 250hp MerCruiser 4.5-litre ECT petrols with optional Axius, or twin 260HP 3.0L TDI diesels, again with optional Axius. UK prices are expected to start at £115,000.

NEWS Solent motorboat event in aid of Wetwheels The Royal Southern Yacht Club (RSrnYC) on the River Hamble is organising a summer motorboat event in the Solent where all proceeds will be going to the Wetwheels Foundation. The event, planned for the 17th of June, will involve a Solent Safari to the Beaulieu River, where participants will stop for lunch, followed by a Poker Run back to Hamble, with an end-of-day prize-giving at the RSrnYC clubhouse. Wetwheels builds disabled people’s confidence by providing the opportunity to access the sea in a fun, safe, stimulating and rewarding way using specially modified, fully accessible powerboats. There is an entry fee of £40 per boat and more details can be found via the RSrnYC website.

Princess launch YachtQuarters share scheme Princess Motor Yacht Sales has launched a new shared ownership scheme called YachtQuarters. The scheme offers a part share in a new Princess 75MY motoryacht that will be based in the Balearic Islands, at Port Adriano in Mallorca. The four-year scheme will see four owners each buying a share in the 80ft four-cabin yacht, which will be available on a rota system for 32 weeks of the year. Each owner is entitled to two weeks during July-August, four weeks April-June and Sept-Oct and two off-season weeks during months of March and November. As well as dealing with skippering and professional crew, cleaning and maintenance, Yacht Quarters say it will also make sure that owners personal artefacts are placed onboard for scheduled stays too, so it will be like stepping onboard your own boat. The company say that the scheme works out 65% less than chartering per week. After purchasing their share, it is expected that each owner will pay approximately £100k a year running costs. 14

Paddle steamer Maid of the Loch to sail again For many years the decommisioned paddle steamer, Maid of the Loch, has been a visitor attraction at Balloch on Loch Lomond in Scotland. However, a new campaign could see it sailing again. Commisioned in 1953, the Clyde-built ship has an art deco inspired interior and is the last, and largest paddle steamer to sail Loch Lomond. In 1981, the Maid was decommissioned and was left to decay until 1996 when, at the point of dereliction, it was rescued by the Loch Lomond Steamship Company, who continue to care for her to this day. With public donations via a website and a Heritage Lottery Fund, a loyal band of volunteers hope ‘to sail Maid of the Loch once again and return paddle steamer cruising to Loch Lomond for the enjoyment of everyone, today and for future generations, steering the Maid to a new phase of her life’. Campaigners say “Following a successful Heritage Lottery Fund bid in 2015, we now need to raise £1.3m in order to release the funding of £3.8m, which will allow us to return our Maid to full operation.”

Northman 1200 NEW BOAT The Polish builder, Northman made its UK debut at the London Boat Show with its current model the Nexus Revo 870. At the show it also revealed artist impressions of the new 1200 model. The 1200 is a sedan-style displacement cruiser which can be fitted with a single inboard diesel up to 135hp, an outboard up to 150hp or a hybrid electric propulsion system. It offers 6-8 berths, with a layout that incorporates a galley and two ensuite toilet compartments. The boat is due to be launched in March this year and Northman’s UK Scottish-based dealer, 360 Boat Services, told Motorboat Owner that hopefully a flybridge option will be available later on in the year. Fairline F-Line 33 NEW BOAT

The first artist impressions of the new F-Line 33 have been released by British boat builder, Fairline Yachts. The new sleek, entry-level sportscruiser model has been designed by Alberto Mancini and is due to be launched in January 2019. Images show a spacious, deep open cockpit with a sunpad-cum-dinette seating area aft. Inside, the layout comprises of a U-shaped raised dinette forward, converting into a double berth, a toilet/ shower compartment, galley and a separate mid cabin, with a large double berth running thwartships. Priced from ÂŁ220k ex taxes, it will be available with a choice of two petrol engines, twin Volvo Penta V6-240hp or V8-300hp, and a diesel option, twin D3-220hp. In other news, Fairline Yachts also recently unveiled its new website.

SEAir Flying RIB NEW BOAT

The French company SEAir has teamed up with Zodiac to create a new range of flying rigid inflatable boats. SEAair specialises in making boats fly, thanks to foils that protrude out from the hull, allowing it to lift out of the water at speed. Such technologies have been used to create the new Foiling Avon GT670 Flying RIB, a boat that is equipped with auto controlled foiling systems which offer stability and comfort, as well as lower engine speeds and noise, and claims to bring 30% energy savings. London Boat Show Review The London Boat Show at ExCeL in Docklands, drew to a close on Sunday 14th of January. With a new 5-day format, the show saw 347 UK and international exhibitors gathering and interspersed within ExCeL’s South Hall, displaying boats, marine products and services. The show organisers, British Marine, report that 52,000 people visited the show overall, that is an average of just over 10,000 people a day, with the weekend feeling particularly busy. Many exhibitor and visitor impressions were that ‘the show’s buzz is back’, with busier-feeling

aisles and popular new features, such as the atmospheric, inland-waterwaysthemed waterside pub, The Lock Keepers Inn, and a recreation of a lock next to it. A display of classic boats at the show entrance, talks at two theatre areas and a trial kite surfing area, were also captivating visitors too. On show Preview Day, Sunseeker International announced it is the partner of the Fifa World Cup 2018 in Russia, with footballer, Sir Geoff Hirst, opening the stand and, poised for the press, holding a replica of the Jules Remit Trophy. The

company also announced it was teaming up with the parent company of the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Formula One team in a range of new products, a move that promises to see Sunseeker going back to its smaller performance powerboat roots. Other celebrities spotted at the show included TV presenter, Lorraine Kelly and Formula Oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, Bernie Ecclestone was spotted viewing a purple Mastercraft wakeboarding boat. brought to life by the new Kidderminsterbased partnership, Banks Martin. Other new boats includes the Quicksilver 675 Pilothouse Explorer, Rodman 42 Spirit 42 Coupe and Northman Nexus Revo 870. Another new company was Henleybased, E-Boatique, a company, founded by Gillian Nahum, specialising in new and used electric boat sales, and electric conversions of classic inland cruisers. NEWBOATS The new format London Boat Show didn’t fail to deliver a wide variety of new boats, engines and equipment. We trawled the hall of the five-day show in double quick time to ensure we captured the best of them.

Banks Martin Beaulieu 30

More ex Sealine employees have emerged as independent boat builders, with the team from Banks Martin unveiling their rather nice Beaulieu 30. The boat mixes traditional inland cruiser styling with modern building techniques and quality fixtures and fittings to deliver a very attractive inland and estuary cruiser. The boat on show offered open plan five berth accommodation but there is an option to separate the forward area into a separate cabin with the addition of a bulkhead. There is still work in progress on the wheelshelter roof , to ensure that it lowers easily for an air draft of 7’2”, and everywhere else displayed a high level of finish. The toilet compartment is huge and headroom throughout is very PRICE generous. Power is supplied by a single FROM £139,850 50hp Volvo Penta shaftdrive unit for a top speed of around 10 knots. Bayliner’s VR range of bowriders and cuddies has been extended downwards with a new, entry-level, VR4. Like the VR5 and VR6, the VR4 is available with a choice of inboard sterndrive and outboard propulsion systems. The former comes as standard with a Mercruiser 200hp 4.5 litre V6, while the latter will have a single Mercury of up to 115hp. There were three debuts from Chaparral at London. The first was a Surf version of the 21 H20 we tested last month, which has Volvo’s Forward Drive system, together with ballast tanks and surf gates to deliver the perfect watersports package. They were also displaying a new 267 SSX, a midsized bow rider cruiser with separate toilet compartment, but the boat that caught our eye was the new 337 SSX. This large open bow boat looks like a great party vessel, with its large open deck space and 16 person rating, but despite having a bow rider configuration up top, Chaparral have managed to combine a decent sized two person cabin down below that also contains a toilet/ shower compartment. As you would expect from this manufacturer, the build quality and materials are top notch with nice touches such as the rear transom seat that converts electrically into a sun pad. Since then they have re-branded and launched a new model based on the same PRICE FROM ÂŁ32,750 hull. Now called Dolfor Boats, the new model is a day/picnic boat designed for gentle river cruising. The price at the show, as the name indicates, is for an electric powered version with a 4kW Torqeedo motor and 48v battery pack. This is said to deliver 5 knots maximum speed and a cruising speed of 3-4 knots and an endurance of 6-8 hours. The boat comes with a hardtop, with solar panel for battery charging, and a small galley beneath the helm seat comprising a sink with cold pressurised water, a portable hob and a cooler. Of course, you could equip this boat with a small outboard and, if you did, you would save a large lump of the price above, and still have a very usable river boat. When I tell you that this sub 6m boat, which weighs under 1500kg, is fitted with a 320hp inboard engine, running a shaft in a V drive configuration, you will understand that it is no ordinary sportsboat. I have driven the WT1 and can tell you that, without doubt, it will put the biggest grin on your face ever. It has clever electronics to control towing speeds, and ballast tanks to produce just the right wake to board or surf, but above all it has the handling of a go-cart on steroids. A new range of bowthrusters from Vetus promises to deliver improved features and functionality over existing small DC electric thrusters. The Bow Pro range are suitable for both 12 and 24 volt systems and offer efficiency of up to 93%, compared to around 65% on current models. They use a brushless motor and can operate for up to 10 minutes continuously at full power. Most usefully though is their proportional control and ‘lock’ function, that allows a setting to be locked in and the control released to maintain a set thrust. The units are backwards compatible with the existing Vetus range, meaning a swap can be carried out with the boat in the water. The unit can run on 12 or 25V DC, as well as AC between 100 and 240V, and can be controlled remotely with an App on your phone or tablet. After a couple of high profile, and tragic cases, one boater decided that there must be a better system for ensuring a boat’s engine is shut down, if everyone is thrown overboard, than the simple springy killcord. The result is the Lifecord. Lifecord operates in the same way as a killcord, and even connects to all existing killcord switches, but has one unique difference, it knows when it is not being worn and issues an audible and visual alert. Light Tape is a product that appears to have a number of uses. The ultra thin tape can be powered by AC or DC, is cool to the touch and dimmable. Post London Boat Show analysis

Thank you for two things, one for a great digital mag, and secondly for keeping up the quality. I’m glad to see that you’re not changing, what is essentially, for me at least, a winning format. We attended the London Boat Show on the Sunday where, at first, we were amazed that we got to see all the boats in one single day, first time ever. However, we had the inevitable post show analysis on the way home and decided that this is a shrinking show. There was certainly less on show than last year, in fact we concluded that the show is getting smaller and smaller each year, with more and more of non-boat-related products such as cars, summerhouses, garden furniture, massage chairs, now even VW Campers. So it begs the question, why do I go to the boat show? Well, unfortunately, it is not to buy a new boat. I actually go to look at design trends and new innovative products, both on the boats and by the manufacturer. I constantly look to upgrade my 30 year-old Sunfury, which satisfies most of my boating whims. Items on my wish list include a super silent, non-vibration generator, an efficient space heater, an improved mattress, and an easy-to-use canopy. Back to the show, for me, the best boat of the show was the Banks Martin Beaulieu 30. I loved it for its modern lines, the use of glass, the phenomenal space inside, and the simple and accessible layout of the engine bay. It is an affordable boat too and great quality, and I felt myself comparing it to one of my favourites, the English Harbour. It is a breath of fresh air for inland boaters. Can you do a feature on it please? Lastly, my big question. Given all of the above, why is the Dusseldorf Show bigger than the London Boat Show. Bryan Donaldson Editor replies: While London may have changed over the years, I think it was reinvigorated this year. Yes, it needs a few more exhibitors to return, which in turn should bring visitor numbers up, but from those that were there I heard mostly positive things about the changes this year, so I am hopeful that will happen. Of course, it is never going to compete with Boot Düsseldorf on scale, but that’s fine. Düsseldorf ’s location makes it a bit more of an international show and, lets face it, you wouldn’t have seen the Banks Martin there! Yes we loved it too, and hope to follow up with a test as soon as the opportunity arises.

I noticed a query in the latest issue from someone considering the purchase of a Viking Sedan 32. I own a Viking Pilot 285 (from Viking Marin, Turkey), and agree that the model which this person is considering will indeed be from Viking Marin, as you have guessed. Like yourselves, I have no knowledge of any issues with gelcoat from this manufacturer (apart from one hastily-built prototype model where the owner has told me the full story - including the fact that Viking paid the full costs of all remedial work). I have been thrilled with my boat, and the helpfulness of the yard in Turkey (the director even arranged to send me a huge supply of the odd-sized anodes which they have specially manufactured in Turkey). To make sure you have power at the nonworking item, in this case a masthead light, check for a voltage at the positive and negative terminals. You see see roughly the same voltage you had at the battery

FAULT FINDING

Basic Electrical Testing It is not an unusual occurrence for an onboard electrical item to suddenly stop working. Whether it’s a lamp not lighting, a horn not tooting or a wiper not wiping, these kind of faults are not too difficult to diagnose.

the voltage at the battery as this gives you a reference to what you should expect to see anywhere else on the boat. Place the black/negative probe onto the negative battery terminal and the red/positive probe on the positive terminal. You should get something around 12.7V, or 25.4V on a 24Volt system, which indicates a fully charged battery. If you get something much lower, particularly if it is below 12V or 24V, charge the battery or replace it before moving on as it may simply be low voltage that is stopping the item from working. Once you have confirmed that you have decent power at the battery, place the black probe on the negative wire at the faulty item and the red probe on the positive wire. With a digital multimeter like the one we are using it doesn’t usually matter if you get the probes the wrong

way around, as you will just end up with a negative voltage reading rather than a positive one. With the probes in place, switch the item on. What voltage have you got? If you have 12V/24V or more it looks like it is the item that is faulty. Depending upon the item, you may be able to be confirm this with a continuity test. The continuity setting on your multimeter usually has some kind of sound symbol associated with it, a musical note like mine or a speaker type symbol. This is because the test is an audible one and works by sending a small current through the item being tested. If current can pass through the item the multimeter will beep. This is a particularly good test for simple items such as lamps, fuses and switches where a failed unit will simply not allow any current through. With the continuity setting selected on the multimeter, put one

causes of the failure and that is: a failure in the power supply due to a flat battery, broken wire, blown fuse or loose connection, a failure in the switch gear or a failure of the item itself. Electrical multimeters can seem quite scary to the uninitiated, with all their buttons, settings and funny little symbols, but if you master just a couple of simple settings you have a good chance of finding out what has gone wrong, which is half way to getting the thing working again. Everything written here Before testing anything else make sure you relates to 12 or 24 volt DC have decent voltage at the battery. 12.7V is fully charged, 12.1V is around 50% charged circuits, in and 11.7V indicates a flat battery. other words equipment that is powered by your boat’s batteries. Powercat upgrades down under

My recent discussion on obtaining hot water from outboard motors was a result of a factory installed upgrade aboard my Powercat 3000. But, I have a few projects of my own which might be of interest. I have the good fortune to have a plastics factory with CNC facilities within a mile of my boat and their highly accurate and tidy work has produced some excellent results at a very reasonable cost. I never hack out a hole on the boat with a jigsaw if I can get the part off and take it to the factory. We are very lucky with the weather here in Australia, I boat year-round and I am currently in T-shirt and shorts. John Fairweather Editor says: That’s just rubbing salt into the wound John, and such an apt surname as well! It’s averaging about 5°C here at the moment, and it’s dark by half four in the afternoon. Anyway, thanks for sharing some of your projects and upgrades. I always love to see what other people are up to, and hopefully I can borrow some ideas. Power Steering For once, this was a project

that didn’t involve the plastics factory. I asked my mechanic to install a power steering pump. We identified a sealed compartment in the port hull and while waiting for the pump to arrive I made a hole in the deck and installed a shop bought hatch. I’ve gained some storage too. 34

Fridge The insert in the fridge door was rusty steel and I replaced it with white acrylic.

Interior The cabin of the boat was tightly

sealed when we were not onboard so I bought a solar-powered vent and the plastic factory made the necessary hole in the hatch. Another vent was installed in the cabin door for through draft. A very accurate hole meant that the reverse side did not need finishing. The mattress was a bit of a nuisance as it hindered access to floor hatches and the deck hatch above. I cut it into four pieces and had each piece recovered. The sections can be stacked to free up deck space.

he fridge in the galley on our Sealine has two problems. The first is aesthetic, I have never really been happy with the white frame against the wood surrounds. It looks out of place, like it was added later. The second is that fact that since we have owned the boat there has been a rust patch at the bottom, which has gradually got worse. I know we are not alone in this, as I have seen the exact same thing on a number of used boats that I have boarded over the years. When you open the door, it is not a sight that appeals when it comes to your food storage area. I had always thought that the cure for both of

It was during this process that I realised that the rusty framework was easily removed from the fridge, meaning a repair and the chance to do away with the stark white surround, could be just a days work away. Our fridge is an Engel, but it is highly likely that other makes can be fixed up in a similar way. Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s how I did it.

Luckily not the fridge itself, the rusty frame was a result of years being left shut and unventilated after use

The fridge is held in place with four screws through the metal frame into the cabinetry. These were removed 4

The next thing to do is to remove the door from the fridge. This is as simple as undoing a screw from the top and bottom

The whole fridge could then be slid forward and removed, taking care not to damage the surrounding woodwork 5

There may be a washer or two between the door and its lower mounting bracket, so be careful not to lose these

With both the shorepower and DC electrics off, the AC and DC supplies to the fridge can be disconnected 6

On the inside of the frame there are 12 mounting screws, three on each side, these all need to be removed

PRACTICAL

Keep all the screws, washers and bolts in a container with a lid so you know where they are when it comes time to re-install

Once all of the frame fixing screws are removed, the frame just pushes forward and off the fridge body

The full extent of the problem is now clear, but importantly there is no rust anywhere else

With the frame back in the workshop, the first job was to take an 80 grit flap disc to the surface to remove as much as it could reach

The joint between the two surfaces was out of reach of the disc, so I scraped out the worst with a screwdriver...........

..........before using a mini multi tool with wire brush attachment to remove as much as I could

As there was still some rust evident down in the crevice, I finished off by painting a gel rust remover into the join and left it to do its work

There were also a couple of other areas, such as the mounting screw holes, showing small signs of rust, so these were also cleaned up

After a quick wipe over with some acetone to clean up the dust and debris, the frame was given a couple of coats of spray primer

The choice of topcoats is almost infinite. I chose a grey metallic paint to match the grey plastic of the fridge door edges and applied three coats

There was some rust residue to remove from the fridge door seal and the fridge unit itself. This came off with some household cleaner and a scouring pad

Then it was just a matter of putting the bits back together, reconnecting the wiring and mounting the fridge back into position

Not only has the rust gone, making the fridge a nicer environment to store food, but the whole look has been improved

COST £ The only costs are for the consumables used. A single flap disc (£2.75), a bit of sandpaper, some rust removing gel (£4), a can of spray primer (£4.99) and a can of spray top coat (£6.29) gave us a total for this job of £18.03

TIME TAKEN It takes about half an hour to remove the fridge from the boat, and then the frame from the fridge, and about the same to do the reverse. The bit in-between, the preparation and painting, took me around six hours, although much of this was waiting for coats of paint to dry. Like any job of this sort, the result is directly proportional to the time and effort put in. I could easily have spent twice as long, and the result would have been noticeably better, but compared to what we started with, I am very happy with what I have achieved in a single day. second oldest town in Essex, and offers a charming high street with plenty of historic attractions, as well as shops, restaurants and a regular market. The town’s maritime history and sense of tradition run deep. Described as the gateway to Maldon, the town’s waterfront, known as The Hythe, has been in use for over a thousand years, becoming an important trading and repair hub for cargo vessels over the last hundred years. During these times, Maldon had a timber yard and working flour mill.

Today colourful and beautifully-preserved traditional Thames sailing barges, local to the waters, adorn Hythe Quay as they did in bygone years, and are quite a spectacle in the sunshine. Several traditional working boatyards lining the waterfront, as well as a town pontoon, provides visiting boaters with mooring opportunities, albeit drying to soft mud. Speaking of mud, a well-known town tradition, originating from 1973, is the Maldon Mud Race. Held every year in June, the race sees hundreds

Approaches

As Maldon is tidal, and drying, you will need to plan your visit carefully. Ensure that you have the latest chart and tidal information, and look for a sufficient height of tide for a visit. Access to

Maldon is approximately an hour either side of high water. However, for the visitor pontoon, the River Balliff does recommend arriving and departing at the top of the tide. Access is not always possible on a small neap tide. The standard port for Maldon is Walton-on-theNaze and there is a drying height of 2.4 metres above chart datum on the visitors pontoon. From entering the Blackwater, proceed through the marked estuary towards starboard marker No 1, then port hand marker, Marconi. Those wishing to wait for the tide can anchor off Osea Beach. The anchorage is off the south-east corner of the island, to the east of the pier, and just west of the 8-knot speed limit buoys. Sailing barges also frequent this anchorage, again waiting for the tide to get to Maldon. Be aware, you will almost certainly be travelling upstream with one of these mighty but serene vessels, or meeting one in the channel coming the other way. Osea Island, with its causeway and Manor House, featured in the haunting hammer horror film, The Woman in Black which starred Harry Potter actor, Daniel Radcliffe. Leaving marker, No 3, Doctor, to starboard, head towards No 4, Southey Spit Buoy, passing between the North and South Doubles. From here the channel is somewhat devoid of markers. However, the lit starboard beacon at the Blackwater Sailing Club acts as a transit. Keep this off your port bow, to remain in the channel, until you reach the buoyed moorings. The channel past Promenade Park is narrow. No 19 is the last buoy in the approaches

Be aware, at high water the landscape is flat and the wide expanses of water are deceiving. No 8, Hilly Pool Point buoy, is the next port marker, and here the channel bears round to the south west into Colliers Reach, where it passes the entrance to the lock at Heybridge Basin. Favour the starboard, lock side of the channel for deeper water. Continue on between No 9 and No 10, where the channel then bears around to starboard, to pass between No 11 and No 12. Here the channel favours

the north bank, before bearing around between No 13 and No 14. Keep to the starboard side of the channel passing No 16 and No 15 buoys, and be aware of a yellow beacon with a cross top mark to port, marking the end of the slipway at Promenade Park. Keeping to the north side of the channel, you will pass No 17 and No 19, which are the last navigation marks. be in full view at Hythe Quay. On your final approaches to the quay, be aware that any approaching sailing barges will need lots of room to turn to moor facing downstream. A useful port guide, detailing the approaches, is available via the Maldon Harbour Improvement Commissioners website.

Where to moor

Again, all berths in Maldon dry out and overnight stays are only suitable for boats able to take the ground. Berths dry to soft mud, which should not present any problems, even for shaftdrive boats. Anchoring in the channel is not advised, as this is in regular use by large commercial vessels. Maldonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hythe Quay has recently undergone a transformation. Work was completed in 2015, repairing and improving the quay wall, adding mooring points, electrical supplies, water outlets, lighting, and a bollard and chain fence to keep the public away from the edge. The main option for visiting boaters is the 20-metre visitor pontoon at Hythe

The Marinestore Chandlery (01621 854280) can be found at the entrance of Shipways Yard, in North Street. Shipways Yard (01621 854280) itself has a 15-ton crane, a 20-ton winch hoist and hardstanding. Downs Boatyard (01621 859373) offers many services on site, including lifting, GRP, wood and steel repairs, engine supplies, marine engineering, electronics installation and upholstery/canopy repairs. Landbreach (01621 843334) is another boatyard offering engineering, lift-out and storage facilities. Battery Shack UK (01376 386486) supplies marine batteries and can be found in the Riverside Industrial Estate. The nearest Volvo Penta dealer, spares supplier and service agent is Volspec based at Tollesbury.

Food supplies

There is an M&S Food Hall (8am6pm Mon-Sat, Sun 10am-4pm) and an Iceland in the High Street. At the southern end of the High Street is the Albert Bunting butchers and The Crusty Loaf bakery. There is also a useful Costcutter and Post Office (7am-10:30pm daily). There are two large supermarkets across the river at Fullbridge, a Lidl supermarket (8am10pm Mon-Sat, Sun 10am-4pm) and a large Tesco Extra supermarket (MonSat 6am-12pm, Sun 10am-4pm). Both are accessible via a mostly-level walk following the waterfront road, Downs Road, public footpath and Chandlers Quay, which takes about 15 minutes.

Family-run Landbreach Boatyard can accommodate visitors, and has facilities, electric and water

Quay which is within easy walking distance of the town. This floating pontoon is located just upstream of the sailing barge moorings and has a chaingated access ramp to shore. Mooring here is on a first come first served basis and is governed by The River Bailiff, who can be contacted on 01621 875837 or 07818 013723. The pontoon is popular in the height of the season, so be prepared for rafting. During the summer season Hythe Quay is also popular with tourists watching the comings and goings of the

barges and working quayside. On the day of our visit we noted that the drying height was higher on the northern end of the pontoon, ie boats will stay afloat longer at the southern (seaward) end. There is a water point here for visitors but, while there are 32-amp towers for the barges, there is no electricity available at the pontoon end of the quay. River Bailiff, Nigel Farmer, told Motorboat Owner that it is free to moor there for the first couple of nights, but if you plan to stay longer, you will need to let him know beforehand. For this there is a charge of ÂŁ21 per night. Fees and tide times are displayed on the River Bailiff â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shed. There are no dedicated facilities, so boaters will need to use the public toilets beyond Cookâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Yard, next to the pond (Maldon Marine Lake). Alternatively, mud berths (with fixed staging) and pontoon berth moorings may be available by pre-arrangement at the nearby working, but very welcoming, traditional boatyards. At Shipways Yard there is a chandlery, and visitors are instructed to tie up on the main slip pontoon. For those wishing to stay afloat, there are moorings at nearby Heybridge Basin, after locking through, and from here it is a 10-minute ride on the number 73 to Maldon (Tesco bus stop).

Where to eat & drink

When it comes to drinking and dining out, Maldon has plenty of choice to cater for all tastes and budgets. It is also home to several traditional and modern pubs in close proximity, so be sure to sample the local beers and ales, including the Maldon Brewing Company’s golden beer called Puck’s Folly. For those moored at Hythe Quay, there is a choice of two historic and dog-friendly

Maldon is quite limited in terms of public slipways and facilities. There is a small public slipway located on the busy promenade, but being tight for access and turning, it is really only suitable for hand launches of small boats at high water. No PWCs. This steep and narrow concrete ramp levels out to mud and is accessed via the pay and display car park, which is locked out of hours. There is another slipway for members at the nearby Maldon Yacht Club. Maldon’s three boatyards have road access, albeit tight, and will offer lift ins from a trailer by arrangement. Shipways Yard has a dedicated slipway and use will need to be arranged in advance.

Transport

There are two bus stops along the High Street, one near Moot Hall and the other the Swan Hotel. The closest stop to the moorings is outside the Swan Hotel and from here you can catch services such as the 31 to Chelmsford and the 71 to Colchester. The number 73 will take you to nearby Heybridge Basin. Greater Anglia train services operate into London from nearby Hatfield Peverel (bus 73) and Chelmsford (bus 31), which is just over 6 miles away. Southend Airport is 22 miles away and Stansted Airport is 28 miles.

Friday nights, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons (from midday). Aboard the resident barge, The Resourceful, is The Barge Tearoom, which offers a snug interior and top deck seating, and a kitchen that prides itself in using Maldonsourced ingredients. A flavour of Maldon, Intimo on the High Street

From Hythe Quay, the southern end of the High Street is easily accessible (via Church Street) and offers a choice of cafés, restaurants, pubs and takeaways, including three Indian restaurants in close proximity, Balti Bhujon (01621 852564), Maldon Tandoori (01621 850985) and The Raj takeaway (01621 858510). There is also the Chinese restaurant, House of Delight (01621 854854), Chinese order online takeaway, Rainbow House and The Fish Inn eat-in and takeaway restaurant. El Guaco Mexican Grill (01621 852009) is another favourite. The attractive Italian restaurants, Il Camino (01621 856622) and Intimo-Fresco (01621 843197) may also prove perfect for that special meal. There are more food and drinking choices up in the town itself. The Swan Hotel (01621 853170) in the High Street is popular with boating visitors, serving speciality meat dishes, steaks, burgers and a £14 Sunday roast. The picturesque 14th century Blue Boar Hotel is another pub worthy of a mention. There is also the popular chain restaurant, Prezzo and bakery, Greggs. Finally, for those who love an oriental buffet, a 15-minute walk from the quayside (via Park Drive) is Izumi Maldon

Petrol and diesel is available in cans from the Tesco Extra fuel garage at Maldon, this is across the river at Fullbridge. Waterside diesel and petrol is available at the Blackwater tidal marinas, Bradwell and Tollesbury (01621 869202). Diesel is also available from the tidal Blackwater Marina (01621 740264), at Maylandsea (Lawling Creek).

Further afield

The Blackwater is a sheltered estuary that could easily warrant a weeks worth of cruising. Brightlingsea Harbour, on the Colne, and the marinas at Tollesbury and Bradwell have good facilities for visiting motorboats, as does the locked Heybridge Basin. Further south along the coast you have the town and marina of the sailing mecca, Burnham-on-Crouch. North you have the tranquil Walton Backwaters, followed by a choice of marinas on the River Orwell and town basin at Ipswich.

Places to visit

Maldon is a charming town to explore. Its High Street is very much unspoilt, and retains many of its historic features. It also offers a wide selection of shops, including home furnishings stores, independent clothing boutiques, great cafés and restaurants, and attractive arcades. The focal point of the town centre is the Grade I listed, Moot Hall, with its attractive clock, balcony and bell tower. Described as the most important building in the town, it dates back to the early 15th century and is all that remains of a larger red brick residence. It became a government building and town armoury in the 16th century, later a jail and a police station. Inside, the 19th Century Magistrates Court has been preserved, with many historic artefacts on display. The upper floors are reached by narrow,

twisting stairways and visitors can enjoy panoramic views from the roof. Guided tours are available from March until the end of October on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 2pm and 3.30pm and prices are £4 for adults, £3 for concessions and £2 for children over 5. There are also two beautiful churches to discover, one of which, St Peter’s, houses the Maeldune Heritage Centre which celebrates Maldon’s historical embroidery and arts and crafts. In the centre, the road, Market Hill, peels off the High Street and plummets down to the river, where a bridge straddles and crosses over to the commercial and industrial face of Maldon. Market Hill itself is lined with beautiful, coloured Victorian homes, many with wonky doorframes. It is a picture-postcard scene that is well worth a look. In town, you’ll see references to an 18th century ‘gentle giant’ and ‘Fat Man of Maldon’, 44-stone, Edward Bright. He lived at Church House and was buried, at the age of 29, in St Peters Church next door. Beside the churchyard and Church House is now the aptly-named charming shopping and café arcade, Bright’s Path. There is another shrine to him on the

Destination opposite side of the High Street, in King’s Courtyard. Such stories are portrayed in the Maldon Museum next to Promenade Park. Admission is £2 for adults and 50p for children, with free admission on Bank Holiday Mondays and free entry for children during school holidays. Maldon is a great place for families during the summer with its multifaceted Promenade Park. Here there is a splash park, skate ramps, galleon-shaped adventure playground, sand pit and a boating lake, complete with café, gift and ice cream kiosks. It is also fantastic place for walkers throughout the year too. We can recommend walking along the riverside promenade out to the end where the statue of the Saxon warrior, Byrthnoth, looks out over the channel. The statue commemorates the Battle of Maldon in 991, when the Anglo-Saxons were defeated by Viking invaders. With frequent barge sailings from Hythe Quay, why not book a ride aboard one? Top Sail Charters co-ordinate trips aboard four 19th and 20th century barges from its office at Cook’s Yard on Hythe Quay. It operates regular day trips, including cream tea, birdwatching and Sunday Roast lunch cruises. An hour-long Sunday Roast Cruise is £35 for adults and £26.50 for children. You’ll find details and a programme on the Top Sails website. At Madison Heights, there is a bowling alley, a kids soft play facility called Monkey Puzzle, Laser Maze Adventure

A lake, complete with sand pit area, is next to Hythe Quay and overlooked by St Mary’s Church

and a roller rink. Albeit a 15-minute walk, it’s a great place for a family when weather stops play. It is also next to the Maldon & Tiptree Football Club. A weekly market is held every Thursday in Butt Lane car park 9am-3pm, with some stalls also on Saturday. Bank Holiday Monday markets are also held in Promenade Park, weather permitting. There is also a Flea Market and an Antique Collectors Fair held on the first Saturday of most months. For those interested in military history, the Combined Military Services Museum is worth a visit. Located to the north of the river and town, the museum is open Wednesday to Sunday and every Bank Holiday Monday and visitors can find out about daring operations and see the weapons and armour involved. Admission is £5.75 for adults, £4.75 OAP/concession and £4 for children. Hardtop sportscruiser for 50k

Q I would really love a hard top

sportscruiser, and the Jeanneau Leader 33 that you recently tested looks like it would be perfect. Unfortunately, I have a budget of around £50k, so need to lower my expectations a little. Are there any 30+ft hardtop cruisers that I should consider at this price point?

A A modest budget does not mean you cannot avail yourself of some of these

modern design features. The ‘original’ hardtop sportscruiser, the Princess 30DS, is available for under half your budget. If, however, I had £50k burning a whole in my pocket, and a desire for a boat of a similar design to the Leader 33, I would stick Hardy Seawings 355 into a web search and brush up on my bartering skills. There are currently a couple available for between £50k and £60k, so with a bit of negotiation, there may be a deal to be done. For those with a similar desire, but a smaller budget, you will be pleased to know that the sporty Hardy Seawings range goes right down to 19ft, with some great models in between. Replacement bowthruster battery

Q I need to replace the bow thruster battery, which is located in the bow locker with the thruster. The one in there now, which came with the boat when I bought it in the spring, looks like a standard car battery. I can see though, that it is less then two years old, but it no longer holds a charge. Should I just replace like for like, or is there a better option?

A For a dedicated bow battery I prefer

to use something a bit more robust than the standard wet cell lead acid type. On my last boat, I purchased, at some expense I might add, an Odyssey Extreme battery. This range is made using a very high grade lead, which means they provide lots of power in a compact unit and are able to better withstand being deep discharged. They are also sealed, so can be mounted in different orientations, can endure higher levels of vibration, so perfect for mounting in the bow, and have a long service life. The one I installed was still going strong after 10 years, so the initial expense turned out to be rather cost effective. Running a twin V6 petrol-powered cruiser inland

Q I am looking for a boat to keep on

the inland waterways, possibly either the Broads or the Thames, and I am tempted to save quite a lump of money on the purchase price by going for a petrol powered boat. I am very aware of the cost of running a petrol boat at sea, and as I am going to be looking for something around 30-35ft with two big engines, I am under no illusion that it would be expensive to run at speed. The thing is, I have no plans to ever venture out of speed restricted waters so I am thinking that the running costs should be manageable at speeds of around 5 knots. The boat I am favouring at the moment is fitted with twin 4.3l V6 MPI engines. Can you give me an idea of how much fuel a boat like this would use at typical inland waterways speeds?

A Petrol powered boats tend to be quieter, smoother and less smelly than

diesels, so there are a few advantages to choosing one over a diesel powered boat. The downside, as you rightly point out, is that at speed they can use a scary amount of fuel. You don’t mention what boat you are looking at, so I can’t see if I have some exact figures, but can tell you that a pair of V6 MPI engines will burn around 8LPH at 1000rpm, 20LPH at 1500rpm and about 30LPH at 2000rpm. I would expect an average boat of the size you mention to require somewhere between 1000 and 1500 rpm to maintain a speed of around 5 knots, so you are looking at running costs of around £20 per hour at today’s fuel prices, which is pretty cheap boating. Just make sure that wherever you end up keeping the boat has waterside petrol available. Carrying 20 litre jerry cans soon gets tiring. Another thing to bear in mind with petrol powered boats is the increased risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, so ensure that you have a working CO alarm on board. Just to throw the other end of the scale into the mix, in case you ever do get tempted to blow the cobwebs away, at full throttle, a pair of these engines will burn through around 140LPH and, at a 3000-3500rpm cruising speed, will get through around 50 litres every hour. 54

New bowthruster: Can I use my existing tunnel?

Q The QL bowthruster in my boat has stopped

working and it appears to be beyond economical repair, given that QL thrusters are no longer sold. Is there any reason why I cannot simply buy a whole new thruster system and fit it into the existing tunnel?

A It depends on the diameter of the tunnel. There are many common sizes and,

if you have one of these, you should be able to easily fit a new motor and gearbox into it. You may need to do a bit of work to the tunnel, as the mounting bolts and cut-out are likely to be slightly different. If, however, your existing thruster has an odd sized tunnel that no-one else uses, you may have to bite the bullet and get a new tunnel fitted too. Start by talking to the guys at Sleipner / Side Power. They took over the Norwegian company, Engbo, who originally made the QL range of bowthrusters for Volvo Penta.

High revving two-stroke outboard

Q I have an Evinrude 40hp two-stroke outboard with a problem.

When it fires up, which it does quite easily, it seems to run away and maintain very high revs, even though the throttle is closed and the idle adjustment set at its lowest. What could be the problem?

A A two-stroke showing this symptom may have an air leak into the

crankcase. You should be able to diagnose this with a compression test. I would expect to see around 110-120psi on each cylinder of a well used, but serviceable, two-stroke, so if one cylinder, or both, is showing lower, you may be able to narrow down the problem. In my experience, it is often the bottom cylinder showing low compression, and this would point me towards a possible faulty lower crankshaft seal. This is a cheap part that is not that difficult to replace, although you will need to remove the engine from the leg to do so. Alternatively you may have a reed valve problem, or even an issue with one of the gaskets between the crankcase sections. Seagull trouble

Q Last year I left my boat on

a mid-river mooring and every time I visit I have to spend ages cleaning seagull mess off the canopy and decks. There seems to be many deterrents that people try, from plastic owls to spinning CDs, but do they really work? Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the best solution?

A I have seen enough photos of seagulls sitting on top of a plastic owl to

convince me that any deterrent is only temporary at best. CDs hung on a line do seem to work for some people, but are time consuming to rig and not particularly aesthetic. On a similar vein to plastic owls, I have heard that rubber snakes strewn around the decks can help. They are at least cheap, easy to deploy and can be moved around on each visit to, perhaps, prolong the gulls wariness of them. Ultimately, the best thing to use is something that will physically stop the gulls from using your boat as a perch. If the mess is concentrated in one or two particular areas, look above and try and work out what they are using to perch on. Then rig something to stop them. Stop Gull do a range of products that target specific areas of the boat to prevent gulls from landing. The spinning Air and Air XL are great for large flat surfaces such as hardtops or cabin roofs, while the Keeper and the S27 are good for navigation lights and electronics antennas. They also offer a flying falcon, which works like the owl and the snakes, but has the added advantage of movement whenever there is any breeze. Let us know what you try, and how it works. ayliner is arguably one of the most prolific and well-known US motorboat manufacturers in the world. Established in 1957 by Orin Edson, today the company offers a range of cruisers, deck boats and sportsboats between four and eight metres. It has also just recently unveiled its new, flagship four-berth sportscruiser, the Ciera 10. Prior to this, Bayliner had a 30ft cruiser in its range from the 1970’s, and its Ciera sportscruiser models were particularly successful on UK shores from the ‘80s through to the ‘00s. This month, we

decided to look at a model that gave British 30ft sportscruiser builders a run for their money, the 3055 and 305. During the early ‘90s the flagship of the Ciera sportscruiser range, the 3055 Avanti Sunbridge (built 1991-94), was turning US heads with its striking and sleek looks. Aimed at couples and families, it was a single or twin sterndrive-powered cruiser with a large cockpit and an open plan, 4-6 berth interior. By the mid-90s, the US builder was experiencing great success in Europe with Ciera models such as the 2455, 2655

and 2855, and extended the range by introducing a new curvaceous 3055 Ciera Sunbridge in 1999. It offered the same open plan, 4-6 berth interior and large cockpit as its 3055 Avanti predecessor, but was over a foot wider and only available with twin sterndrives. Its exterior was also the first to feature Bayliner’s ‘swoosh’, deck-level frameless window, a characteristic repeated in the later 245 and 285 models. In 2003, the 3055 was renamed the 305 Ciera, with very few changes made, and continued to be built until 2007.

Possibly the 3055/305’s biggest rivals on the UK market at the time were the Sealine S28 and Fairline Targa 28/29. However, the Bayliner does score in offering an extra two berths over these. After a nine-year production run, the 3055/305 was replaced by the all-new 300 in late 2007, which was a foot smaller all round. This became known as the 315 in 2010. The top companionway step lifts to reveal a rubbish bin, a feature often overlooked in sportscruisers of this size. Beneath the bin is access to a bilge pump float switch and shower sump. To the right of the galley unit is an open-fronted locker designed for a television. This can be viewed from the dinette opposite, and also from the forward berth. There is a large offset double berth in the bow section. This is a great spot for lounging by day and sure to be a hit with younger members of the crew too. The berth measures up to 6ft 10in in length, and is 5ft 3in at its widest point. The bed area can be enclosed by a curtain for privacy. Under the mattress, a long central hatch lifts out to provide access to the bowthruster and dedicated battery, if fitted. Outer triangular-shaped hull lockers provide additional storage space.

There is also a useful shelved cupboard in the bed base, and a short wardrobe can be found set into the bulkhead between the dinette and forward berth. Moving aft, access to the master mid berth is on the starboard side and, despite the cabin being open plan, is nicely tucked away from immediate view. The double is of impressive proportions, at 4ft 3in wide and a generous 6ft 4in length. There is also seated headroom in the berth, with more aft due to the helm seating moulding. The berthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s headboard-cum-shelf conceals some storage. A generous standing area, and a larger, longer-length wardrobe next to the berth, can be enclosed by full height privacy curtain. We noted that the cockpit step drain hoses impinge a little at the end of the berth. There is also a velcro hatch at the foot of the berth which reveals a calorifier and water pump. A diesel heating unit, if fitted, is installed on the aft bulkhead in here. The boatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fresh water tank is forward, under the floor between the galley and

On the 305 there was a choice of two generator installations, a 3.5Kw diesel generator priced between £8-10k and a 4kw petrol generator at £6,500. When it comes to interior finishes, 3055 models have light interiors, which are representative of the era, with white veneered units, pale carpet linings and contrasting jazzy patterned upholstery. The evolution of the 305 brought warm cherry wood veneers and plusher, plainer fabrics, such as leather. Cockpit & Helm You are sure to be impressed with the massive proportions out in the one-level cockpit. There is plenty of space to move around, with tremendous headroom of 6ft 10in under the raked radar arch and canopy. Board through the transom gate and there is a U-shaped seating area to starboard. Here a pedestal table slots in to form a 4-6 person dinette and an infill is used to create an angled sunpad. There is a large coolbox, usually an Igloo 54, fitted inside a dedicated draining well under the dinette seating. Great for entertaining and cruising, the cockpit is unbelievably spacious for a 30ft sportscruiser

deck storage, which is lacking in this side of the cockpit. To port is a unit incorporating a forward-facing pilot seat, a sink with single cold water tap, and two large storage lockers beneath. You will find the battery isolators inside the aft-most locker in this unit. Ahead, the pilot seat offers an excellent view forward, with a well-placed grabrail alongside and integral cup holders in the panel ahead. There is a built-in

shower just inside the transom gate door. To starboard is the raised helm position, offering a spacious double seat with slide adjustment for the helmsman. There is excellent visibility forward and aft from the helm, and the combination of the tall radar arch and a square, upright canopy provide 6ft 4in standing headroom at the helm. Ahead of the helmsman is a stylish and user-friendly, two-tier helm console. This incorporates switches, nav kit and dials, as well as moulded steps for the walk-through windscreen. The main, steering wheel panel is sparsely populated and features space for a good size multifunction display. Rows of switches run each side of the steering wheel, all within easy fingertip reach. There is a breaker panel lower down, which unfortunately means it can be susceptible to damage from the helmsman feet. Check the clear sections for sun and heat damage from the metal framework. Be aware, a canopy or tonneau cover is essential, as most of the seating has wooden bases, which can rot if left to the weather. The side decks are approximately 6 inches wide and, despite being pinched by the stanchion bases and also the shorepower connection, are quite workable. The boatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s stylishly scallopmoulded, sloping foredeck is enclosed by

the decent height guardrails. Finally aft, on the sizable bathing platform, there is a liferaft-size transom locker, with hinged door, for storage. Hull and Handling These are boats that relish speed and acceleration, but are also quite comfortable and easy to drive for distance cruising. The 3055/305 has a planing, modified-vee hull, with a 17-degree deadrise at the transom that enables it to plane quickly. Also, being quite wide at the stern, engine and drive spacing bring stability in fast and slow speed handling. Most 3055 models will have a white hull, while 305s will usually have the blue styling stripe. Inspect the hull and fittings for damage, paying close attention to the rubbing strake and the above-waterline skin fittings which can degrade. Also check the external, bolt-on GRP engine vents for any impact damage, these

panel may incorporate the port engineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s large, clear-bowl, raw water strainer, which is really handy for engine checks. Unfortunately, the starboard raw water strainer is in the identical position and outboard of the engine, so a bit trickier to get to. The dipstick, oil and water caps are accessible on the starboard engine, and lifting the smaller hatch is really only necessary for servicing jobs, such as oil changes. Lifting this secondary hatch is a little more of an undertaking, as this involves the removal of the cool box, and ensuring that the cockpit dinette seats are hinged up and clear. MerCruiser engines may have a Quick Oil Drain System. This requires the boat to be out

Engines Two hatches in the cockpit floor provide engine access, a large one to port and a small one to starboard. Be aware that these hatches fit very tightly together, so any movement in the hinges can make them tricky to lift. Also look for corrosion in the handles and locking mechanisms. The aft seating hinges up in order to lift the main engine hatch, but this is not the easiest of manoeuvres single handed, and you are somewhat reliant on the strength and staying power of the gas struts, which can weaken through age and may need replacing. The main large hatch reveals the entire port engine and the side of the starboard engine. Inside the engine bay there is an enormous amount of room between the motors, with a flat standing area above the plastic holding tank, if fitted. This 2004 305 is fitted with twin 250hp Mercruiser 4.2-litre diesels. Access to the starboard engine is a little restricted

of the water and the oil hoses directed through the bilge drain plug. The plastic fuel tank protrudes out from under the engine bulkhead and mid berth. Engine batteries can be found on the starboard side of the engine bay, while fuel filters are easily accessible to port on the forward bulkhead. We would recommend a full engine and drive survey. Corrosion is the biggest killer when it comes to MerCruiser drives. Checks should also be made of the gimbal bearings on Mercruiser drives. A rumble or growl from the drive during a sea trial could be a sign of water ingress damage, or general wear, to the bearing. The majority of these boats will be fitted with twin MerCruiser engines and sterndrives, diesel and petrol. There is good availability of services and spares in the UK for these engines, and they are also easy enough to work on for the handson boater. Most 3055s in the UK will be petrol-powered. In 2000 there were only two engine options available with this

model, both MerCruiser petrol and fitted with Bravo 2 sterndrives, standard twin 220hp 5-litre and optional 250hp 5.7-litre engines. By 2002, in addition to the above, Bayliner was offering twin 300hp 350 Magnum MPI engines priced at £92,895, mated to Bravo 3 drives, and twin 170hp Volvo KAD32s at £101,995. 305 models again will almost certainly be powered by MerCruiser engines. However, diesel power is more common in these models, and was certainly favoured by customers in the UK. Petrol options were the 5-litre, 5.7-litre and 350 Magnum petrols carried over from the 3055, with the addition of 260hp engines mated to Bravo 3 or 2 drives. Diesel options were twin 170hp Volvo KAD32s or new top spec MerCruiser D-Tronic engines, first in 225hp, then 250hp 4.2-litre engines. There was also a fresh water cooled £2k upgrade available with the 300hp Magnum 350 engines in 2006, priced at £87,995. Boats fitted with 5-litre petrols should achieve a cruising speed of 24-25 knots and a

maximum speed of approximately 32-35 knots. Models with the 5.7-litres petrols should cruise happily between 25-27 knots, burning roughly 80-90 litres per hour or 1.4 mile per gallon. With twin 250hp 4.2 litre diesel engines, you should expect a cruising speed in the mid 20’s, a top speed of around 34 knots and a cruising economy of around 2mpg. Repowering from petrol to diesel is fairly common in coastal-based 3055s. A similar sized, but lighter, 220hp Volvo Penta D3s seem to be a popular option.

Conclusion You will not find another 30 footer that has as much room as a 3055/305. OK, having an open plan layout, with a fixed berth in your living space, may not work for everyone. But for a family or couple it is a colossal entry-level cruiser. With all engine options, the 305/3055 is a sporty, fun boat to drive and, in diesel guise at least, it is also an economical long-distance cruiser

PROJECT Fairline Vixen

n a decidedly spring like, sunny Sunday, I decided I had had enough of engine components and thought it was about time I reacquainted myself with the boat, as I hadnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really seen it since the engine came out at the end of the summer. Earlier in the month though, I did make a little progress on the engine. There was one little niggle from last month that concerned me. During the clean up process of the crankshaft, it became apparent that the rear crankshaft seal running surface was pitted to a point where it was very likely to leak once the engine was rebuilt. This would be a

disaster, as, unlike the front crankshaft seal, the rear can only be changed with the engine out of the boat. I decided that this was not a risk worth taking, so a suitably sized Speedi-Sleeve was ordered. Speedi-Sleeve is a thin, tight fitting, stainless steel sleeve that slides over the metal that the seal runs on to provide a smooth surface, which allows the seal to do its job properly, and without risk of wear or leaks. In effect, the sleeve does very slightly increase the diameter of that particular part of the crankshaft, but only by a very small amount that the seal can easily deal with.

The surface of the crankshaft was smeared with a little Loctite sealant, to ensure that oil would not be able to find its way under the Speedi-Sleeve through the pitted areas, and the sleeve was then tapped home using the drift that comes included with the sleeve. Installation was, literally, a two minute job, and the ÂŁ35 sleeve is a bit of a bargain compared to the alternatives. Cleaning up the engine block was supposed to be the next job, but as I mentioned, the sun was shining and I wanted to get back on the boat again, so I jumped ahead a couple of steps and

started looking at the engine bay. Once the engine is rebuilt, it will go straight back into the boat, so the engine bay will need to be ready to receive it. This meant that it needed a thorough clean, ready for a repaint. To start with I needed to remove the large amount of debris, most of which was corrosion by-products. The majority of this could be removed with a dust pan and brush, but I also needed to give the engine bay a proper clean and that gave me a dilemma. Usually I would expect a boat small enough to be trailed to have a

drain bung, but Leonora didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have one. If I were to use bilge cleaning products and soapy water, how would I then remove it and dry the bilge so that I could paint it? Obviously I needed to add a bilge drain, so I sourced a metal one, as I thought the boat deserved something a bit more sturdy than the cheap plastic type found in dinghies and smaller boats. Fitting it was only just possible between the transom shield and the bottom of the hull so, after some careful measurements, a pilot hole was drilled and a check inside the boat revealed that it would be a perfect fit. The hole was then increased to the 25mm that the bung required. The plug of transom that was removed shows just how heavily built boats were back in the day when fibreglass was still a relatively new boat building material, with just over two inches of plywood and GRP. It was also good to see that the plywood inside the transom was as dry as the day the boat was built, as a rotten transom core is not uncommon on older boats and is a costly and labour intensive problem to tackle. With that in mind I needed to ensure that the wood core that I had just exposed

to the bilge water would be protected, so I lined the hole with a coat of Sikaflex sealant. Next I just needed to mark up the fixing holes and drill pilot holes for the screws. I was careful to choose screws short enough not to go into the plywood core, to reduce the chance of rot, but again I made sure that there was plenty of sealant in and around the fixing holes to stop water finding its way in. I did not need this to look pretty, but I did need guaranteed waterproofness, so I went mad with the sealant. I can always remove the excess later, but as it will probably end up getting antifouled, I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think it will be a problem. Here is how we did it.

was almost certainly the new fibreglass that was added when the engine was swapped and will need grinding back and re-glassing. During my time in the bilge, I also noticed that the jackshaft, which connects the engine to the drive, was a bit wobbly. Spinning it revealed that the bearings were in a bad way, almost certainly from water ingress through the bellows, so I need to remove the bell housing from the boat and replace them. This would also give me a chance to give

the bell housing a proper clean and paint. Unfortunately, this part of the plan did not go very well. There are six large galvanised bolts holding the bell housing to the transom shield. One came out quite easily, two bolts have sheared and the remaining three are all starting to go the same way. I ended this month by taking a step back, while I think about my next move. Ultimately, due to the two sheared bolts, I have passed the point of no return and the thing will have to come out one way or the other. I’m going to sleep on it and will add it to my list of jobs for next time.

At the Southampton boat show we stumbled across a stand selling a new range of biodegradable Italian cleaning and maintenance products called Blue Marine. Amongst these was a bilge cleaner called Sentinew. I knew that I had a dirty Fairline Vixen bilge waiting at home for me, so I grabbed a bottle and have been waiting for the right day to give it a go. That day came last month and with Sentinew in one hand and bucket in the other, I set to work. The instructions are a little vague in terms of use. It suggests mixing with water at a ratio of between 1:2 and 1:20. It then suggests spraying onto the surface and simply hosing off after a couple of minutes. Realistically, this was never going to shift the grime in our bilge, so I resorted to their supplementary instructions of scrubbing with a sponge or brush for stubborn grubbiness. I mixed the solution up in a bucket, choosing a 1:10 mix as it was in the middle of their recommendations. The product has a nice citrus smell during the mixing process, although after being stuck in the bilge with it for a while, it became a little overbearing, with a slight ammonia overtone. Still, I shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t complain because boy did it work. A fairly gentle scrub and the tide lines disappeared. I scrubbed the whole engine bay and then hosed it out with fresh water. With minimal effort all manner of grime just washed out of the new transom bung to leave a surprisingly clean surface. The one thing that the Fairline bilge lacked was the sort of oily surfaces you get in a well-used Mixed at 10:1, the cleaner removed engine bay, probably because it has been a decade tide marks in the bilge with ease 78

This was the result of about half an hour of fairly gentle scrubbing

or two since the area had seen a running engine. Luckily, I had another boat for that, and a wipe with a sponge, with no effort at all, removed the oil like furniture polish removes dust. It really cut through and removed all traces, leaving a squeaky clean surface. The solution itself forms a very strong detergent, one that felt slimy and slippery to touch. I think I would try mixing it at 1:20 next time, and I doubt it would be any less effective. It would also make the 1 litre bottle go a long way. You may find it difficult to get hold of Sentinew, as the UK distributor is still not in place, but you can order online, and you may see the guys from Blue Marine at another boat show, so keep an eye out. If you have a grubby bilge, it really is a product worth going the extra mile to get hold of. A word of warning to finish. There is a corrosive symbol on the bottle, which I did not heed. If you do use this product, you really should wear rubber gloves. You might look silly, but the result will be worth it, and you won’t have the dry, sore hands that I had later that evening. t the time of our test, the 895 was the flagship in Jeanneauâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Merry Fisher range and was the replacement for the successful 855. By the time you read this, the new 1095 will have been launched in Europe, although it will be another couple of months before one lands on our shores. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll bring you more on that as soon as we manage to get our hands on it, but in the meantime the first page of the current Merry Fisher brochure details this boat, and its coloured hull counterpart the 895 Legende. There is also an 895 Offshore version that comes with larger fuel tanks, giving a 600 litre total capacity, and which is available in just twin engine configuration up to a maximum of 400hp. The offshore version also comes with an updated RCD category

B rating. Inside the 895 you get an almost identical layout to the 855. Up in the bow there is a double berth, which is slightly offset but nevertheless allows access from either side, inside a separate cabin. The theme here, as with much of the boat, and indeed the Merry Fisher range, is simple practicality. Lift the aft end of the bed up, which is assisted by gas struts

that also hold it up, and you have access to a large locker below. Thoughtfully, this locker is still accessible, even if the bed is occupied, as Jeanneau added a door to the front of the locker also. More storage is provided in here by a row of three eyelevel lockers along either side of the cabin and a generously sized full-height hanging locker on the port side. Headroom is good at the aft end of the berth where there is also just enough space to provide a useful dressing area. The cabin benefits from plenty of natural light from the hull windows on either side, an opening hatch in the top and a glazed panel above the aft end of the berth that is placed just under the wheelhouse windscreen. compartment to starboard, and a second cabin to port. The former has 6ft plus headroom and all the equipment you would need to spend a few nights away from shoreside facilities. As standard, the 895 comes with a sea toilet with 80-litre holding tank, a wash basin and a shower. The compartment has two hull windows, the aft most one fitted with an opening port for ventilation. Storage in here is limited to a single under sink cupboard. Opposite the toilet compartment is the entrance to the second, fully enclosed, cabin. Just inside the door you will find a small full height dressing area with a large double berth and small corner seat stretching back under the wheelhouse sole. With two double berths, the layout is, perhaps, not ideally suited to a family

of four, although there is yet another berth option that we will come to in a bit. Storage space in here is pretty good, with a half-height locker in the entrance, with some flat storage on top, and some cupboards built into the aft bulkhead. Again, light is good with a hull window

containing an opening port and an overhead skylight in the standing area, which is beneath the windscreen. The companionway up into the wheelhouse is quite steep but made easier with a pair of steps and a suitably-placed grabrail. The wheelhouse, like those on other Merry Fisher boats, is spacious and bathed in natural light, with huge windows all round, two large opening glass sunroofs and a sliding door next to the helm. On the starboard side there is a large sliding window and at the aft end you get a threesection opening patio door arrangement. All this means that even on those rare hot days, the wheelhouse will still be a cool and pleasant place to be, despite the amount of glass. It is worth noting that the twin sunroofs and the side opening All the facilities you will need for a weekend afloat, including a full height toilet compartment door are standard features on the 895 and, 84

The mid-cabin is spacious, with good headroom and plenty of natural light

so far, the only options you may want to tick would be the wheelhouse curtain set for privacy and the removable carpet set for additional comfort. That curtain set would be a must if you were to use this boat’s convertible dinette as an additional sleeping area. As mentioned earlier, unless your kids are young enough to share a double cabin, this is where one of them is bound to end up. As a dinette, it is just about big enough for a family of four, but drop the table and it does provide another large single, or cosy double berth. To get this feature you will also need to delve into the options list and tick the circa £4,500 ‘comfort pack’. As well as the convertible Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

saloon berth, this pack will provide a bow thruster, shore power and battery charger and a mains power water heater, all either very useful or even essential items that are very much worth having. At the front of the wheelhouse, the helm console is equipped with a single seat, while two crew can sit on the port side on the forward section of dinette seating with its flappable backrest. The helm console is compact and busy with controls and instruments, particularly on our test boat with its twin throttle configuration, but there is still space to install a small to mid-sized multi-function display, perfectly positioned just above the

steering wheel. There is also a small panel overhead where additional instruments or a VHF radio can be mounted. The helm seat is adjustable and comes with a lifting bolster, and with ample headroom the 895 helm is comfortable in the standing, leaning or seated position. Alongside the helm is a sliding door with a step up

to give the helmsman easy access to the deck for single handing or helping the crew. Installed into the space below the helm seat is the boat’s refrigerator, and behind this is the galley. The fridge is part of the ‘premiere’ option package that also includes an electric windlass, trim tabs, aft bench cushions, cockpit shower and LED lighting around the boat. Choosing options is a tricky part of any boat purchase, but with the 895, the two packs on offer, ‘Comfort’ and ‘Premiere’, seem to have most essentials covered and together will add around £10k to the base price, leaving you to just add some electronics and decide on what is perhaps the biggest decision of all, what power package to go for, but more on that in a bit. The galley is concealed beneath a lifting lid and consists of a sink and twin burner hob. There is an optional microwave, but

you will have to take the ‘comfort’ pack with its shorepower or opt for the rather extravagant diesel generator (available only with the offshore version) to make use of this. Without a microwave, the galley should still be more than capable of conjuring up some basic provisions, and you get the perfect excuse to eat out more. Galley storage is reasonable, with a double cupboard and a full length drawer. Storage elsewhere in the wheelhouse is limited to another drawer beneath the aft dinette seat and, if you don’t take the fridge option, the space below the helm seat. Externally, the 895’s practicality really shines through. The offset wheelhouse provides a deep and very wide side deck on the starboard side, together with that useful side door, while the port side deck, despite being raised and narrower, Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

is still eminently usable should you need to moor port side to. High guardrails on either side, together with grab rails on the wheelhouse roof, and at the aft end, make moving around the boat very safe and secure. One new feature on this model is a small gate in the starboard topside to allow easy access when moored, particularly to a high sided quay. Up at

the bow you get a very good platform for crewing, with lots of flat, non-slip deck, and you can also opt for sunpad cushions for the cabin top. The anchor locker lid is held open with a gas strut and beneath you will find the optional electric windlass and a locker large enough to store a couple of fenders along with your anchor rode. Back in the cockpit there is, as standard, a full width transom seat that slides forward to allow the engines to be fully tilted, and an option to extend the seating into a U-shape that can also be in-filled to create a cockpit sun pad. There is, of course, storage beneath the seating and you also get a huge locker in the cockpit sole with a gas strut retained lid. Down here is where the diesel heating system would be installed,

“Despite blustery, choppy test conditions, the boat handled superbly” bathing ladder and boarding rail, and leads straight into the cockpit via the transom gate. The port platform is quite inaccessible, without climbing over the seating or sliding the transom seat forward, but does of course come in handy when carrying out your engine checks, particularly on a twin engined version. Underway As mentioned earlier, one big decision you have to make when ordering an 895 is whether to go with a big single engine, or a pair of smaller units. Standard options seem to be either twin 150’s or a single 300, although you can also specify twin 175’s or even 200’s on the offshore version, or a single 350. Yamaha engines and having previously tested the 855 with a single F300 I feel I can draw some useful conclusions. The boat we were testing was fitted with mechanical throttles that, if I’m honest, felt a bit ‘agricultural’. If it were an option, I would definitely choose to upgrade to electronic throttle and shift. The boat did have hydraulic steering, which is standard, so the steering at least was light, perfectly balanced and a joy to use. Conditions during our test were somewhat blustery with a decent sized swell, so we had perfect conditions to put the 895 through its paces. Bashing into a head sea, the 895 could maintain a very comfortable and easy 18 knots. Pushing it beyond this resulted in some slamming and discomfort, but these were not the sort of

conditions you would be choosing to be out in. It was nice though, to see that if you were caught out, you could still make your way back to port at a decent pace. Spinning the boat around and tackling a following sea, the boat handled superbly, with a comfortable cruising speed well into the 20’s. In either direction, the boat delivered quite a wet ride in these choppy conditions, but the inside helm position and twin wipers meant this really wasn’t an issue. Pickup, acceleration and top speed were all good, although the twin engine setup did deliver noticeably more ventilation of the props in a tight turn than I experienced with the single engine version of the previous model. This is undoubtedly due to the single prop being central and deeper in the water than the twins. I would say that, on balance, the performance felt a little shy of that experienced on the single 300hp 855, although don’t take that as being a negative. In twin 150hp guise, the 895 is a great package, and comes with the added security of a backup engine as well as the

extra manoeuvrability that twins bring. For me, the saving on the purchase price, the reduction in running and servicing costs, and the fact that a single 300 provides slightly better performance and sprightlier handling, means I would choose this option. In fact, I might even be a bit extravagant and go for the single 350. If you really can’t see yourself being comfortable with a single engine, the twin 150’s provide perfectly acceptable performance, but you might want to at least think about those 175’s. If you chose the offshore version, you only have the option of twins, and

twin 200’s at that, so I would guess that performance in this case would be on a par with an 895 equipped with a single 350. Conclusion The 895 is a multi-purpose boat that will look after you and your family for short breaks, and equally act as a day boat for cruising or fishing. I have always thought the Merry Fisher 855 was a particularly handsome boat, and the 895 hasn’t lost any of its looks with its minor design tweaks. It’s fair to say that it doesn’t offer the last word in luxury or performance, but it does provide a great package that is practical, easy to own and fun to use. It has enough facilities to be considered a

genuine compact cruiser, and, with the right engine package, performance that won’t leave you wanting. Like all boats, the 895 is a compromise, but it is one that I think any owner will be more than happy with.
