In 2017 the Fairline brand celebrates its 50th anniversary, and what better way to celebrate than to get as many Fairlines together in one place as possible. In June, 50 Fairline boats gathered in Mallorca to celebrate this event, and you can see some of the fabulous photos on page 16. Personally, I would like to have seen a more varied mix of Fairline models to mark the occasion, but I guess

with Mallorcan berthing prices as they are, you won’t find many Holidays, Weekends, Furys or Sprints close to hand. Maybe for their 60th, we could have something in the UK and get at least one of every model ever made to attend; now that would be a spectacle. I’ll even happily volunteer to fill the Vixen slot, if we actually manage to get the boat finished by 2027. With the cruising season well underway,

it was alarming to hear, just as we were going to press, of a British boater receiving a fine in Belgium for having traces of red diesel in their tank. We are going to try to find out more about this, but in the meantime if you are travelling to Belgium, the current advice is to ensure that you only have fuel in your boat’s fuel tank, not in cans, and that you have receipts and an up to date logbook that proves that you have filled up legally in the UK, and paid full duty on the fuel purchased. None of this 60/40 business on your last fill up before heading across the Channel. Of course the other option is to avoid Belgium completely, which would be a shame as it offers some great destinations for UK based boaters, but until the facts of this recent case become clear, that may be the only way of guaranteeing that you don’t receive an unjust, and unfair, fine.

NEWS RYA receives first report of UK boater fined in Belgium for red diesel The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has received a report from a boater who has been fined €500 for having traces of red diesel in his yacht’s fuel tank following an inspection by Belgian Customs in Nieuwpoort. Belgian Customs boarded the UK flagged boat at the KYCN Marina and, in addition to checking paperwork, examined a sample of fuel, which was found to contain traces of red diesel. This is the first report of its kind the RYA explained, ‘Although it is still legal to purchase red diesel for use in pleasure craft in the UK, it is unlawful in Belgium to use red diesel for propelling a private pleasure craft. Boating in Belgian waters with marked ‘red’ diesel in your fuel tanks in 2010 and 2011 put you at risk of receiving a significant fine. The Belgian Authorities then appeared to have become more tolerant of UK boaters using red diesel and the risk of being fined seemed to have reduced. We received a report in May 2016 which suggested that the Belgian Authorities were hardening. At present we do not know whether this fine was an isolated incident or if it is a signal that the Belgian authorities are taking a tougher approach towards UK flagged boats. In order to establish a fuller picture of the situation, we would urge anyone who is fined in Belgium for having red diesel in their tanks to email boating.abroad@rya.org.uk giving as much detail as possible.’
Free Southampton Boat Show tickets for RYA members For a second year in a row, the RYA will be offering a free ticket to this years Southampton Boat Show to all of its members. RYA members are able to claim one ticket to any day of the show, taking place 15-24 September, including Public Preview Day, as well as purchase up to three additional tickets at the special discounted rate of £12. The offer is available until midnight on Thursday 14 September. Members will also have access to the RYA lounge, which will be located in the Holiday Inn hotel. Cranchi XT36 NEW BOAT The Italian boat builder, Cranchi, has been putting the finishing touches to two of its designs for 2017/18. Developed through its partnership with designer Christian Grande, the new model, the XT36, will debut shortly, along with the launch of the restyled Eco Trawler 53. The sterndrive-powered XT36 is set to combine the characteristics of a trawler with the performance of a hardtop-cum-coupe sportscruiser. It will be available in two layouts, with two cabins and two toilet compartments, or three cabins and one toilet. The UK Cranchi dealer is Salterns Brokerage in Poole.
RNLI ‘Lifejacket Locker’ scheme expands
‘Lifejacket locker’ is a safety initiative introduced by the RNLI to encourage more people to use lifejackets aboard their tenders and will be expanding again this year. Lifejacket lockers were introduced at three locations across the south west in 2014 following RNLI research that showed boaters can be put off wearing their lifejacket aboard their tenders, because of the hassle of having nowhere secure to store them once ashore. The initiative was trialled at Salcombe pictured, Fowey and on the River Yealm, and has been so successful it is being rolled out at several new locations across the south west over the summer. The RNLI supply the lockers to harbours and locations free of charge providing they meet the criteria. It’s hoped the scheme, which is aimed at visiting boaters coming ashore in tenders, will help curb preventable accidents between moored vessels and the shore. To operate a locker, users need to insert a £1 coin into door to remove the key. The £1 will be returned once the key is put back. The lockers are for short-term storage and not for overnight use. For more information on lifejacket lockers visit www.rnli.org/boating. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

NEWS Shallow depths on the upper Thames Rivers users were warned during June of low water levels on the River Thames, in particular upstream of Abingdon lock, due to this year’s below-average rainfall. The Environment Agency (EA) asked boaters to ‘take extra care, especially immediately downstream of locks, where the natural gradient of the river means levels are always slightly lower than elsewhere in the reach’. The EA has marked all known shallow areas with red and green buoys and ask that any obstructions be reported on 03708 506 506. Other actions included closing weirs and restrictions on the emptying of locks in the Oxford area, unless they contained at least one boat wherever possible. ‘Above Iffley Lock, we cannot guarantee the navigation channel will always be sufficiently deep for craft with a draft of 0.9m or more.’ The EA said ‘If water levels continue to drop, it will be increasingly difficult for us to maintain depths, even if we implement additional measures such as restricted lock use. We hope to avoid the need for additional measures, but may not be able to unless there is significant rainfall over the coming weeks. Where possible, we will also ask our lock staff to advise you of any known shallow areas ahead of you.’

New pontoons at Saint Cast Marina
Two new pontoons have been installed at the 800-berth Saint Cast Marina, in North Brittany, France. Pontoon Z is now in position, parallel to and inside of the marina seawall. It provides 10 new visitor berths, notably for regatta and rally participants, and a permanent marked berth for the Corsaire ferry that links Saint Cast with Dinard and Saint Malo during the summer. Previously rally participants were accommodated on the outer breakwater, which is exposed in strong S-SE winds. An extension to O pontoon now links visitor pontoon D and A, with new finger berths inside of this for RIBs.

Congratulations on an excellent publication, the only downside is, I can’t pace myself and read it straight through cover-to-cover, if you say that about an on-line publication. As a Guernsey resident and a regular visitor to Sark, mooring usually in Dixcart Bay, I thought the whole Sark article last month was brilliant, and reflected exactly the sort of experience you get when visiting. I’m a regular volunteer at the Sark Folk Festival, for which the 1200 tickets are sold out online within 10 minutes, so I hope optimistic readers wouldn’t expect to get in on the gate. I’m a proud Corvette 32 owner and a member of the Corvette Association listed at the back of your mag, which now boasts 70 plus boats and even more interested members. Keep up the great work MBO. Ken Wheeler Editor replies: Thank you for your lovely comments, and for the update on the Sark Folk Festival. It sounds like a hugely popular event, so anyone thinking of visiting Sark to attend the festival, clearly needs to plan and book in advance.

Going Dutch
We have a Dutch steel cruiser which we keep in Friesland, in the Netherlands and following on from the excellent advice from Kim Hollamby, I can recommend looking at the Dutch website, www.YachtFocus.com. It is a generic boat sales site but there are a lot of steel boats listed with links to brokers. There are thousands of steel cruisers over here of all types, layouts and sizes from those well into seven figure asking prices to those which could euphemistically be described as ‘suitable for the home handyman’. Some converted tugs, lighters and barges are seriously old (over 100 years) and 99% of them are immaculate. There is nothing a Dutch boatyard cannot do at a fair price and to a high standard. Friends of ours are bringing their steel boat up from central France to a Dutch shipyard for work to be carried out. Richard Hayes Editor replies: Thank you for getting in touch. The Dutch certainly are experts when it comes to steel displacement vessels, and the website looks quite useful, once you have converted it into English. 18

HOW TO
Fixing a GPS antenna
YOU WILL NEED TOOLS for 120 & 125 units • Screwdriver • Voltage tester
A re you in a fix with your fix? We’ll
show you how to fix it. If your boat is equipped with Raymarine (Raytheon) electronics from the 90’s or noughties, such as the SL and RL series, or the ‘Classic’ C or E series, you may experience problems with your GPS fix. The kit itself is still very good and remains very usable for the foreseeable future, apart from this

If your Raystar 120 (left) or 125 (right) is playing up, the ‘fix’ could be simple
one common glitch. The error usually shows itself by taking an age to get a fix when you first turn the unit on. It may also show up in other ways, such as not getting a fix at all, or losing a fix randomly. Before you chuck away all your expensive electronics, we suggest you try a simple, and very cheap fix. The problem is often caused by a small battery within the GPS unit. These 3V button cells are designed to power the memory of the GPS unit, so that it retains a rough idea of where the boat is when the power to the unit is turned off. This speeds up the process of getting a fix next time the unit is powered up. Without this memory, the unit has to go through a much longer process, starting from scratch, as it works out where on the planet it is. These cells are not rechargeable, so it is no surprise that up to 20 years later they have simply run out of power. My understanding is that these batteries have an expected life of around 10 years. Replacing the cell varies from very simple, to a little complex, depending upon what GPS unit your system uses. Here we are
going to concentrate on the Raystar 120 and Raystar 125, the two units that were in production during the period. The newer Raystar 130 looks, externally at least, identical to the 125, so if you have one of these that is showing signs of failing, the process should be very similar. If you have a Raystar 120, your job is quite a bit more complex than the newer units, so we’ll start by showing the method for this model. If you have a 125 model, changing the battery really couldn’t be simpler.
The GPS unit is often mounted on top of the radar arch. 120 units are usually hard wired

PRACTICAL
Raystar 120 - HOW TO IN 15 STEPS
1
With the unit removed from the boat, start by undoing the six small screws on the underside 4
You need to be very careful that you don’t break these small wires, so go gently
7
Before you go any further, it is worth checking the voltage of this cell. Mine gave a reading of zero
2
With the screws removed, gently prize the unit apart. A rubber sealing O ring causes some resistance 5
3
With the top off, gently prize away the workings from the base
6
You now have good access Undo the cable clamp to allow the inner workings to to the 3v button cell. As you can see, on the 120 this separate from the case is soldered in place 8
Source a replacement 3V cell with tabs. I got mine from an online auction site, but an electronics shop such as Maplin should have them
9
I then gently cut away the old battery by slicing through the tabs with a sharp pair of side cutters
22
July 2017
10
11
12
Using a soldering iron, I carefully removed the remainder of the old tabs from the circuit board
The tabs of the new battery needed to be shaped so that I could solder them into the circuit board. I used a bench grinder
Then it was a matter of soldering on the new, making sure you get the positive and negative tabs the right way around
13
14
15
To check that I had made some good solder joints, I checked the voltage on the board, not the battery
The cable clamp can now be fixed back in place and the circuit board placed back into position
Finally, you just need to screw the case back together and fix the unit back on the boat
Raystar 125 - HOW TO IN 6 STEPS
1
Like the 120, you have to undo the body by removing six small screws from the underside
2
With the top removed, you can see the 3v battery held in position by a case
3
The battery can simply be pushed out of the case. It is not soldered in place
Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
23
PRACTICAL
4
Again, it is probably worth checking the voltage of the old battery, just to confirm that it is dead
5
6
Replacement batteries for the 125, without solder tabs, are much easier to source, and cheaper too
Just slide the new battery into the case, ensure it is the correct way around, and screw the GPS unit’s case back together
COST This is such a cheap and easy job to do; it is worth trying if you are having problems with your old Raymarine GPS equipment, even if you suspect the fault lies elsewhere. The new cell with tabs for the Raystar 120 cost me £1.99. The non-tabbed cell for the 125 was just 87p.
TIME TAKEN Once you have the GPS unit removed from the boat, which is easier in the case of the 125 unit, as the wiring is plugged into the back of it, the job will take around 10 minutes for the 125, and around half an hour for the 120. Removing a 120 unit will mean tracing the wire back to a suitable connection, unless you have enough slack to do the work in situ. If you choose this latter route, make sure all the power to your electronics is turned off before commencing work. You don’t want to short anything out inside.
You might be able to repair your troublesome GPS chartplotter for literally pennies 24

Guernsey Ipswich
by Claire Frew
Ipswich is an ancient and cosmopolitan town boasting a sheltered town basin with excellent facilities for boaters
T
he beautiful and diverse River Orwell, on the east coast in Suffolk, is a melting pot of anchorages and mooring opportunities. However, when the weather is foul, or indeed fair, there is one particular town haven that is not to be missed, Ipswich. Ipswich dates back to the Middle Ages and was in fact the first Anglo Saxon
town in England. Back then, the town prospered on wool and grain processing, trade industries that saw the Ipswich Wet Dock established. Built in Victorian times, the dock’s quays were lined with many warehouses, with mighty square riggers travelling up and down the Orwell carrying Ipswich’s trade. There is a complete contrast of use for

the Wet Dock today. While a few of the waterfront warehouses remain, the dock is an attractive and very separate haven for leisure boaters. At 12 miles to open sea, it offers two visitor marinas, which are accessible at all-states of tide via a lock. On the picturesque waterfront, the Old Custom House and the Isaac Lord malt kiln building on Neptune Quay remain as symbols of its Victorian past life, and are now enveloped by modern, attractive apartment buildings. The industrial side of Ipswich has moved to the tidal wharfs
seen to the south, outside of the basin, and remains prolific. Regarded as the ‘UK’s biggest grain export port’, Ipswich handles over 2-3 million tonnes of shipping containers each year, bulk shipments of timber from Scandinavia and imports of bricks, as well as aggregates, grain, animal feed, fertilisers, and cement. With everything within easy walking distance and good transport links, Ipswich is the ideal boating break. It is a reliable, all-weather bolthole that attracts boaters from near and far.

For this, the Wallet, which passes closely along the coast at Clacton and Holland-on-Sea, is a useful connecting route for passages from nearby harbours such as Brightlingsea or Blackwater ports. The huge container cranes at Felixstowe will be visible from miles around. Once within the harbour limits, inside Landguard Point, there is an 8-knot speed

Be sure to keep a good look out on your approaches, as many fast wind farm vessels that are based in the vicinity, use the main channel. Tugs might also be encountered in the sea area near north cardinal marker Landguard, often dragging a large wake behind them. If you have one, an AIS receiver is a very

useful tool around such a busy port. It is recommended that all boats monitor Harwich VTS on VHF ch71 on their approach, and then VHF ch68, Ipswich Port, once past Felixstowe container terminal on the River Orwell. Shotley Marina is to the north, just inside the entrance to the River Stour. Accessible by a lock, it offers fuelling and overnighting opportunities. The speed limit in the Sour is 8 knots, reducing to 5 knots past Harwich. Heading up the Orwell, the speed limit reduces to 6 knots just past the container terminal. At this point boats can cross and continue along the starboard side of the channel, still keeping a good look out for shipping. Here the landscape
changes suddenly and dramatically, with sandy, tree-fringed banks and farmland. At just under a mile wide in places, the Orwell continues in a northwesterly direction, passing the marinas of Suffolk Yacht Harbour to starboard and Woolverstone to port, both of which offer fuelling and overnighting opportunities. There is also the charming haven of Pin Mill with its picturesque waterside pub, The Butt & Oyster. Before long, the huge Orwell Bridge will come into view, and with 125ft (38m) clearance, it presents no problems for leisure boaters. Those intending to lock through into Ipswich Wet Dock will need to contact ‘Ipswich Lock Control’ on VHF ch68 as they clear the Orwell Bridge and

There are traffic lights displayed on both sides of the lock, and boats arriving early for the lock may moor on the waiting pontoons located either side. If you have not already done so, at this point we would also recommend contacting either of the two marinas on VHF channel 80 to arrange a berth, Ipswich Haven (01473 236644) and Neptune (01473 215206). The lock is very straightforward and has a floating pontoon on the starboard (east) side. There are vertical covered chains on the west side, and this wall is used at busier times. We would always recommend rigging lines and fenders on both sides during your approach. Queuing and rafting is to be expected during busy periods. Once in the lock, the duty officer will often broadcast updates on the lock progress over a loud hailer. Lock users are advised to wear a lifejacket.

All About Ipswich
A popular venue, Ipswich’s waterfront is a sun trap by day and a haven of pretty lights at night
Ports (ABP) Haven Marinas in the UK, the others being Lowestoft in Norfolk, Southampton Town Quay and Fleetwood in Lancashire. Upon exiting the lock, to port you will see the first of Ipswich Haven Marina’s pontoon fingers, AA to EE, then A and B. Soon after you will see the huge sheds of UK boat manufacturers Fairline Yachts and Spirit Yachts. Beyond this point the pontoon fingers continue on around the corner, heading west, D to P. Visitors are usually allocated spaces on K pontoon, with additional hammerhead space available on G, D, EE and DD. Visitors are charged £2.55 per metre per day. On site you will find the Burton Waters boat sales office and chandlery, and the Last Anchor restaurant. The 150-berth Neptune Marina is slightly more convenient for the town, which is a 10-minute walk, and offers good size berths for visitors. The marina is located in the top northeast corner of the Wet Dock, and is overlooked by several cafés, bars and restaurants. Visitors will be directed to a vacant finger berth, or to the hammerheads of C or D pontoon.
A 10-metre (33ft) boat will be charged £32.30 per night, and if you’re staying for a week, you pay for 5 nights and get the rest of the week free. The best walking route into town, from Neptune, is to follow Fore Street, before heading west along Orwell Place and Tacket Street. For boaters with canine crew, the 28-hectare Holywells Park is conveniently closeby. At night, on busy weekends, a party atmosphere descends on Neptune Quay and its colourfully-lit bars and restaurants, so it can be a little noisy into the early hours. The River Orwell continues on upstream to the west of the lock with a section known as the New Cut. In the entrance is a new Water Velocity Control Structure which, when raised from the riverbed, is used to control tidal surges. When in use three flashing reds are displayed and no passage is possible, as the structure sits just below the water level. Protruding from the high concrete west bank are two sets of pontoons. This is Debbage Yachting, a small boatyard with a limited chandlery, annual tidal moorings (access HW±2), lift out and hardstanding.

Where to eat & drink
When it comes to eating out, there is a huge choice of cafés, restaurants and pubs, both in town and around the Wet Dock. First and foremost, if you are looking for breakfast we can recommend heading for the Loch Fyne restaurant, which is set back from Neptune Marina in Duke Street. This chain fish restaurant is open from 9am and serves up a ‘mean’ Full English £8.95, plus other more unusual breakfast specialities, including Lobster Benedict £10.95. The Colours Café on the waterfront is another popular breakfast and daytime venue for coffee and light bites, and has a lovely adjoining food shop. Along the waterfront, dining and drinking options include The Grazing Sheep, Isaacs, Aurora and Pizza Express. Moored against the quay, The Mariners floating restaurant comes highly recommended for serving up ‘top notch’ French cuisine for that special evening. Tucked away in a side street next to Isaacs is the Briarbank Brewery bar. With inside and outside seating and a full selection of wines and spirits, you can sample this microbrewery’s latest wares, such as honey and fruit beers, Milk Stout and Smoked Pilsner. It also has a ‘pub

BOAT TEST
Finnmaster Husky R5
T
he Scandinavian phenomenon of aluminium boats has been a bit slow to catch on in the UK, and to be honest I don’t know why that should be. As a building material, aluminium is light, strong, durable and easy to maintain and repair. It is also classed as non-
combustible, so it arguably has an added safety benefit in that it won’t feed a boat fire and, being easily re-cycled, it also has some environmental credentials too. That is why I am glad to see that the tide is beginning to turn, with various brands of aluminum boats now being represented here. I have just returned from a trip where I had a bit of a baptism of fire. Having never been on an aluminium boat, aside from tenders and commercial craft, I had the chance to test no fewer

than three different makes of metal hulled sportsboats, from three of Finland’s leading aluminium boat builders, including the Husky R5. The R5 is the entry-level boat in Finnmaster’s five-model aluminium Husky series and is built with an aluminium hull and a GRP inner moulding. On paper, there is very little difference between the R5 and R6, just 0.4m on the length and 0.3m on the beam, but whereas the R6 and above all come with aluminium Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
bathing platforms, ie they are part of the hull structure, on the R5 these are part of the GRP moulding, making for a slightly cheaper build process and a slightly lighter boat, as the aluminium hull doesn’t extend all the way aft. In the cockpit the deck of the R5 has been lowered to provide better stability and a lower centre of gravity. The result is that the cockpit of this compact sportsboat is surprisingly deep and feels very safe. The downside, if there is one, is that the
37
cockpit drain, placed centre and aft, is liable to back fill if too much weight is placed aft. On our test it took two people (around 160kg) to be seated on the transom with no weight forward for this to happen, and it quickly drained out again when weight was shifted forward. The aft bench will comfortably seat two, maybe three at a push, and is designed with hinges that allow access to the large storage area below without removing the cushion. This may seem like a small thing, but when you see how difficult some builders make it to access under seat storage you will understand what a nice touch this is, and all achieved with hinges that allow the base to shift forward as it lifts to clear the backrest cushion. As well as providing the bulk of the storage on this boat, this aft locker also houses the battery, main electrical panel and, below a lifting floor panel, access to the fuel tank

and the fuel filter. Either side of the bench seat there is step through access out to the transom where you get a small bathing platform on either side of the engine well. The starboard platform sports a fixed bathing platform while the port side lifts to reveal a useful wet locker and also the fuel filler. If you choose the optional canopy, the framework stows neatly behind the backrest of the aft bench seat.

In the front of the cockpit you get a pair of supportive adjustable bucket seats that are deep set behind a typically Scandinavian tall windscreen. The helm console is simple, yet still has room for a usefully sized multifunction display, a couple of engine instruments and space for additional kit, if required. Storage at the helm is quite limited, with just a small open cubbyhole below the throttle, while the navigator gets a net pouch for paperwork, charts etc and an open tray area beneath the windscreen with a pair of cupholders. A neat touch here is the way that the cupholder part has been sectioned off from the rest with spill channels aft, so that any drink spills will not affect items stored forward. In usual bowrider style you get a passageway forward between the helm and nav stations. This has a central opening section in the windscreen and a lower door that can be closed off for weather protection. Unusually, there are no hatch accessed storage compartments in this companionway to make use of the space within the mouldings, although access to the port one is available from the bow. Although the Husky R5 is called a Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
bowrider, one look at the bow will tell you that this is not really a place to be when the boat is underway. It is a very practical space, especially for boarding and disembarking forward, but luxurious it is not. Just in front of the port screen is a small step cum seat, but this really seems to have been designed for the former purpose, as there is also a small step further up to allow access over the side of the boat. Beneath this lower step is

a useful storage compartment that makes some use of the space inside the moulding forward of the navigator’s seat. On the starboard side there is no corresponding seat/step/storage compartment, but there is a small moulded step and another on the gunwale to provide access over the starboard side. Elsewhere in the bow you have a pair of useful fender baskets and two steps to allow bow access through the open fronted pulpit rail, with an anchor locker, open to the aft end for easy access, beneath the top step.
It’s not a race boat, but gets up onto the plane in about 5 seconds and is cruising at around 25 knots just over 10 seconds later. Eeeking out those last few knots takes some time, while you finely tune the trim, and it’s fair to say that the midrange pick up is a little on the sedate side. It’s not often I think a boat can handle more power than the manufacturers recommended largest option, but in this case I am certain that the R5 could. It definitely feels solid, stable and well built enough to take it. Underway, the hull handles everything you can throw Underway at it, including full speed, full lock turns, Our test boat was fitted with the largest, without any drama other than some loss of 70hp, engine option and I would say speed and a little cavitation. If you are out on one of the edges, you are not quite so lucky. The helm position is very good when seated, and when close quarters it is equally easy to use in the standing position. If you raise the bolster and drive leaning against the seat, your height will be the all-important factor. Everything is still nicely placed, but you may find that the windscreen top frame is right in your line of sight. Aluminium hulls do have a reputation for being noisy, but Finnmaster has foam lined the hulls of the Husky range, and the result is a very quiet ride. So quiet, in fact, that you just hear the faint creaking coming from the superstructure, possibly where the different build materials were moving against each other. intrusive, but was more an indication of just how quiet the hull and engine were. Conclusion The Husky range has a purposeful and rugged look about them, and the little R5 brings a bucket load of this to the affordable entry-level market. The quality of build, materials and fit-out appear to be excellent, and the boat is fun and easy to drive. The price is right, the looks are great and, at 7nmpg, the running costs are fantastic. Yes a few more extra HP on the transom would be nice, but then again you could always look at the R6 for that. In short, it’s the entry-level boat that you probably haven’t thought of, but really should consider. ENQUIRIES: Ideal Boat Tel: 01758 703013 www.idealboat.com

PROJECT BOAT
PROJECT Fairline Vixen
T
he project boat has taken a back seat this month, mainly because we managed to actually go boating ourselves. When I say boating, I mean we spent the best part of a week weatherbound in Ramsgate, missing the hottest spell we have seen in years by just a week, but still, it beats being in the office. What I have managed to do though, is to spend just a little bit of time on the Volvo Penta 290A sterndrive. When I drained the oil, there was evidence that water had found its way in, so I thought a pressure test might be in order. When we covered outdrive servicing recently, we didn’t mention pressure testing, apart from to suggest that your drive might need it if
you found water in the oil, so we thought it worth dedicating a feature. To start with, the drive must be drained of all oil, otherwise the oil can seal up any leaks and hide them. If the pressure test returns acceptable results you then carry out a vacuum test. The process here is for the Volvo 290 drive, but will be very similar for other Volvo drives and not that different for drives from other manufacturers. You will need to find the specific measurements of pressure and vacuum that your drive should be tested to, and this information can usually be found in the workshop manual. Failing that, a call to your local dealer may yield results.

If you carry out your own servicing, the purchase of a pressure/vacuum pump will be a very worthwhile investment. You will recoup the cost the first time you find water in the oil. While there are some very expensive bits of kit out there, you don’t have to spend lots of money. The pump I am using cost £40 from an online auction site.
The kit you need can be bought cheaply online
Pressure testing a sterndrive HOW TO IN 15 STEPS
1
With the drive empty of oil, remove the drain plug. Ours didn’t have the required O ring, which isn’t a good start
4
If you have stable pressure, spin the propshaft, the input shaft and move the gear linkage arm to check for increased resistance and any air leaks
2
Connect the pump to the drain hole in an airtight way. After numerous failed attempts, I used the connector from a gear lube pump together with a bit of PTFE tape 5
If, after the above, the pressure is still stable, increase it to 17psi (117kPa). The drive should not lose more than 1psi (7kPa) in three minutes
3
The first stage is a pressure test to 4psi (27kPa). Pump up and wait a minute to see if the pressure remains stable
6
Only once you have achieved satisfactory pressure tests, can you move onto the vacuum tests. Excavate to 4 in Hg (13kPa or 102 mm Hg)

9
Again spin the prop and input shaft and manipulate the gearshift linkage to check for stiffness or loss of vacuum
If no loss occurs, increase the vacuum to 15 in Hg (50kPa/381 mmHg). The drive should not lose more than 1 inHg (3.4kPa/25 mm Hg) within 3 minutes
The above is how a test should go. Ours, however, would not hold enough pressure to even start to diagnose the problem
10
11
12
With such a large loss of air, I had to rig an electric pump, set to 15psi, to continuously pressurize the drive while I looked for the leak, or leaks
Using a leak detection spray, (soapy water is just as good), I quickly found the main source of air escape. The gear housing cover was loose
Once tightened down, I was able to pressurize the drive, but only as far as the first stage. It was still losing air so I used my leak test solution on the prop shaft seal
13
14
15
I also used it on the dipstick, the oil filler, the gear shift linkage seal and finally on the input shaft seal, which is where I found the leak
Once pressure is stable, I can move onto the vacuum test. If there are any leaks, I can test the seal points using a thick oil, which gets sucked in at the leak
You can carry out these tests with the drive still on the boat, but in the case of a faulty input shaft seal, like mine, you won’t find it without removing the drive

Perspex hatch UV damage
Q I installed an ABS plastic access hatch
less than two years ago, but I am finding that the glazing is breaking down in two places. The producer said that, being plastic, UV rays will cause this effect, so is not covered under warranty. Is it conceivable that this should happen in less than two years, and am I being unreasonable to expect this hatch to last longer?
A UV certainly does cause plastic hatches and windows to craze, but two years
certainly seems far too quick. I fitted a plastic deck hatch onto the foredeck of my Bayliner, and the plastic remained clear and damage free when I sold it six or seven years later. Normally this sort of crazing is found on plastic windows in boats that are many years old, typically from the 70’s, 80’s and maybe early 90’s. It seems to me that the material used in your hatch is not really suitable for the environment that it is designed to be used in, if it lasts so little time. I know that you have spoken to the producer, but your contract is with the retailer, so maybe you should approach them and offer them a chance to make things right.
Faulty temperature gauge sender
Q On my twin diesel engine boat, one temperature gauge
consistently reads lower than the other. At cruising speed the starboard engine sits at around 88°C while the port engine is at 50°C. I have swapped the thermostats over, in case one was stuck open, but the low temperature remained on the port engine. Is this likely to be a sender or a gauge problem?
A Before you do anything else, try removing the temperature sender connector on
the port engine and give the terminals a good clean. The sender and gauge work on resistance readings and a poor connection can give false results. If this doesn’t work, you could try swapping the sender, and the gauge from one engine to the other. Do one thing at a time and if an item is faulty you should find it straight away. 46

New starter boat for £15k
Q I often see 30 or even 40 foot
boats referred to as starter boats, but I am looking for something in the true meaning of the word. I have about £15k to spend and want to buy new, so that I have some warranty and dealer support while I learn the ropes. My criteria are something small enough to keep at home and tow behind my saloon car, but big enough to accommodate a family of two adults and two kids for a day on the water. I am not looking for serious offshore capability, but to be able to nip around the bay, or along the coast to the next estuary on a settled day would be great. Ideally I want something fast enough to be fun, but doesn’t need to have the power to do watersports or anything like that. What boats should I be looking at?
A A new boat that fits all of your criteria is quite hard to come by. Bayliner’s
Element range immediately springs to mind, but even the entry level E5 will bust your budget once you add a trailer to the package. I’m going to suggest you look at the new Terhi 475BR pictured. I have just returned from a test of this ABS plastic boat and was impressed with its practical features, including four good cockpit seating positions and loads of clever storage. With a bit of pencil sharpening I think you could get a 475 with a mid-range 50hp outboard on the back, and an unbraked trailer, all for your budget. With the 50hp engine you can expect top speeds of around 27 knots. Don’t be tempted to save money by opting for the smallest 40hp engine, but if your negotiating skills are up to it, the largest 60hp would provide some useful extra poke.

Princess 35 performance
Q I am thinking of changing my sportsboat for
a flybridge and, with a budget of around £50k, I keep coming back to a Princess 35. They seem to be well regarded, and have a good reputation, but I am a little worried about the performance with the standard 200hp Volvo engines. I am used to cruising at speeds of up to 30 knots and think that the Princess sounds a bit underpowered. Am I right to be concerned?
A Firstly, the Princess 35 is an excellent choice at your budget. It is one of the
finest flybridge boats of its size from that era. Having said that, this was an era when not every boat that left the production line had to achieve 30 knots. If you are looking at a shaftdrive version, the top speed when new was around 25 knots. Given its advancing years and a few hundred kilos of kit and supplies onboard, and you could be looking at a top speed today of around 23 knots and a cruising speed of 18-20 knots. This may sound slow compared to your sportscruiser, but if you can live with that you won’t be disappointed with your choice. There are a few sterndrive versions of the 35, which may manage a knot or two more, but the shaft drive model seems to be the preferred choice, and the simpler drive train and cheaper maintenance should compensate for the slightly lower pace and increased fuel bill. Another alternative is to look out for one of the few twin 250hp versions, fitted with Cummins engines. These would probably just about have hit 30 knots when new, so should be good for a cruise in the mid 20’s today.
Securing a larger outboard
Q I am fitting a new 25hp outboard to a Dijon 14, which I plan to use for fishing. Is it OK just to secure the engine with the thumbscrew clamps or should I be looking at bolting it through the transom as well?
A Personally I would put some bolts through the transom. Outboard clamps do
have a habit of vibrating loose, which could ultimately see the outboard jump off the transom and be lost. Through bolting also offers a small additional level of security, which may just stop an opportunist who would otherwise be able to remove the engine without tools. 48

Petrol ‘shelf-life’
Q I have a small motorboat on the Thames, powered by a 20hp four stroke
outboard. The engine is very frugal at river speeds, so a 20 litre tank of fuel lasts months between refills. I keep hearing that petrol degrades very quickly these days, and was wondering if the fuel at the end of the season is still going to be good enough to use. There is likely to be some still in the tank, so what about the start of the following season?
A Petrol does seem to have a short shelf life these days, and I have an outboard that refuses to run on fuel just a few months old. What I would do in your situation is to buy premium, higher octane, fuel from a roadside garage. This won’t improve the performance of your engine, but I find that the higher octane fuel ages better than regular, and keeps my outboard running sweeter for longer. The 10p per litre difference is not going to break the bank if you are only using 20 litres or so a season. The fuel is also said to help keep the fuel system clean, which is a bonus on an engine with low throughput. The addition of ethanol is one of the reasons petrol doesn’t last as long as it used to. Premium fuel often still contains ethanol, although possibly at a lower concentration, but at least as of 2016, Esso premium fuel was said to be ethanol free. The pump should display the ethanol content by way of an E rating. E0 is ethanol free, while most fuels will be either E5 or E10, which contain up to 5% and 10% ethanol respectively. Other things you could consider is to only add 10 litres at a time, so you refresh the fuel twice as often. You could also add one of the propriety stabilizers to the fuel, which should help keep it fresh for longer. As for the end of the season, if you have a petrol car, I would empty the boat tank into the car and leave it empty for the winter. That way you can start each season with fresh fuel. Buying premium ‘ethanol-free’ unleaded for your outboard should help your fuel last longer into the season Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

a complete guide to the best boats on the used market
Princess V39/V40/V42
I
f you aspire to own a 40ft sportscruiser, the current Princess V39/V40 has got to be one of the most popular and aspirational boats built in the UK today. However, for those who cannot afford the £300k to £400k that these boats command, their roots run deep into the 90’s with the original boats bearing the name. The V39 MkI, V40 and V42 are all essentially the same boat, albeit with a few changes over the 15-year production run. With used prices between £65-£165k, we decided to take a closer look. To find the origins of this V-series trio we must look back into the 80’s and
the introduction of the Riviera brand, Princess’s first sportscruiser range. Designed by British designer, Bernard Olesinski, these boats set out to offer open-cockpit, med-style boating, with models from 26 to 46ft. The second largest model was the 406 Riviera, built between 1991 and 1994. This offered 4-6 berths and was powered by twin shaftdrive diesels. By 1994 the Rivieras were being gradually phased out, and was soon to be replaced by the V-class range, with debut models, the V52 and the V39. Designed again by Olesinski, the new range saw a dramatic style change for the

British builder, with gracefully sleek and sculpted lines. Distinctive features of the range included a forward-raked radar arch and a contrasting sweep of colour on the hull. ‘Performance, style, comfort and charisma, that is what the V Class is all about’ Princess said in a brochure, and they weren’t wrong. V interiors were refined, oozing high quality and sophistication. Measuring just over 40ft, powered by twin sterndrives and priced from £150k, the V39 offered a huge cockpit area, 4-6 berths with a two-cabin one-head layout. It was a Mediterranean luxury apartment

that could turn heads, and was capable of 35 knots. What was not to like? The V40 replaced the V39 in 1996 but was, for all intents and purposes, the same boat. However, it did have a larger bathing platform, making it over a foot longer than its predecessor. Also, in addition to the conventional twin sterndrive option, it was now available with inboard shaftdrives. While this configuration provided superb handling, it seems customers were not willing to pay the £25k extra and very few were built. Just 14 V40’s were built during its three year production run. The final part of the V-trio saga saw the V40 become the V42 in 1999. With this came a few interior and exterior tweeks and updated horsepower. It proved very popular and Princess built 367 V42’s in 8 years. The company then went on to launch a V42 MkII model in 2006, of which 50 were built. By late 2008 the V-range consisted of hardtop models from 44-70ft, and included the ‘all-new’ 44ft V42 MkIII. However, with an increasing demand for entry-level hardtop sportscruisers, Princess introduced the V39 MkII in 2012. It was stylish and practical, with a canvas hardtop, mid cabin hull windows and a sweeping single-pane windscreen. A lack of tender garage also provided a vast and versatile cockpit, as seen on the original V39. It proved a very popular model, selling out in its first year of production with 191 built. Early this year, Princess introduced the striking V40 which replaces the V39 in the range. Priced from £353,700, this uses the V39 hull but has a single sweeping hull window each side. So it seems history could be repeating itself and long may Princess’s 40ft V continue to be successful.

The appeal of a used British-built, diesel-powered, pedigree sportscruiser remains strong, meaning good examples do not stay on the market for long. Princess clearly had the Med in its sights for the first V39, and its successors, and sure enough, in our used boat searches, we uncovered several examples for sale in warmer climes, including Croatia and Portugal. These boats, particularly the V39, remain rare to the market in the UK. That’s not to say that there are not many in our waters, we just think there are just some very happy owners out there who are hanging on to them. complemented by light vinyl cabin linings and quality carpets throughout. The wood finish was particularly distinctive on the V39. These models are usually finished in a two-tone, high gloss, patterned wood effect, mahogany burr is contrasted with smaller sections of ebony burr. There was also an option of a one-colour, lighter maple finish. Despite looking a little dated and something of a statement, you can be assured that the finish is high quality, and certainly looks decadent. A high gloss light or dark cherry wood finish was offered in the later V40 and V42 models.
The mid cabin has twin berths, a full-height dressing area, vanity sink and plenty of storage
On Deck Steps built into the port side cockpit coaming provide the best access to the side decks. These boats boast 7-8 inch one-level side decks and an elegantly sculpted raised foredeck. Consequently it is quite easy to move about on deck. The side decks are enclosed by mid-thigh height guardrails, which stylishly converge with the foredeck at the bow. Whilst on deck be sure to inspect the windscreen mullions, as on early models, these are normally aluminium. and flaking paint could be sign of corrosion. Princess used GRP mullions on later boats. Now we move onto an important consideration, access aboard. These boats have quite high side decks and access ashore is usually via the bathing platform, or the un-enclosed stern quarters of the side decks. On the V39, access immediately ashore off the bathing platform when stern to, is excellent. However, alongside access may be a little tricky on this model, as the bathing platform is confined by sculpted stern

quarter buttresses, or as we would like to call them, ‘hips’. While these are fitted with excellent, sturdy grabrails, the ‘hip’ design does hamper side-on, alongside access. Keen to address this issue, Princess extended the bathing platform by around a foot aft, and full width out and around the hips in the two succeeding models. Consequently, alongside access was greatly improved on the V40 and V42. Telescopic davits were usually fitted to the V39’s, and early V40’s transom, these can be folded away when not in use, leaving the bathing platform clear for access.

helmsman. Most V40’s and all V42’s will have twin helm bucket seats with bolsters, which is a more comfortable set up. At the helm, engine instruments and dials are set into two angled dash panels, the larger lower of the two accommodating the steering and nav equipment. Often a walnut or elm burr, such surfaces suffer in the sun and elements, sometimes fading, cracking and peeling. Consequently these could prove difficult to replace. We noted that the headroom under the radar arch in the forward section of the cockpit was very generous, at approximately 6ft 3in. When it comes to navigation equipment, 90’s 39’s and 40’s were often fitted with Furuno radar systems, namely a 1721 or 1751 radome and optional Autohelm autopilot and GPS systems. Later boats will often have integrated Raytheon/Raymarine, or possibly Simrad, radar and chartplotter systems. We would recommend investigating the feasibility of running any existing navigation equipment. Upgrades could prove costly, but are usually worth it.
There is a lot of canvas on this boat, so you will need to check that this is serviceable, as repairs or replacement could be a large un-factored expense. Boats may also have the standard tonneau cover. While this is practical and protective for Med or dayboating in warmer weather, a full camper canvas is far more useful in the UK. A good canopy, especially when combined with cockpit heating, really turns these boats into all-weather cruisers. Hull and Handling Owners are quick to praise the smooth ride qualities of the hull, saying it provides reassuring performance, even in challenging conditions. Weighing around 7-10 tonnes, these boats have the ‘get up and go’ poise of a powerboat, with handling that is both agile and precise. They ride high and with the bow down, with a deep V sharp-entry punching through chop, unfazed. Downwind performance is particularly celebrated. The V39 and V40 models were available in three hull colours, navy blue, deep red or white, navy being the most popular. The
V42 was available with a navy, slate blue, or the standard white hull. Dark coloured hulls look fantastic, but will need to be maintained regularly as they can fade, especially on the aft corners. White hulls are more common in the V40 and V42 models. Engines The V39 was typically fitted with twin Volvo diesel sterndrives with duo props. A sterndrive power evolution. V39’s were fitted with twin 230hp KAD42’s. By the V42, Princess was fitting 310hp D6’s
and spring of 1995. The 230hp engines offer top speeds of a little over 30 knots. There was also a MerCruiser diesel option available, in the shape of twin 270hp D7.3L/B3 priced at £159,624, and a petrol alternative fitted with twin 275hp Volvo 5.8FI/DP’s for £138,580. The V40 was also available with twin 230hp KAD42’s, later replaced by 230hp KAD43’s, plus 260hp KAD44’s, the latter being the most popular in this model. The V40 was also available in a twin diesel inboard version, with 370hp Volvo TAMD63P’s driving conventional shafts via V-drive gearboxes. This version was priced from £188,658 in August 1996. Later in build, larger 430hp TAMD73P’s were available at the price of £210,019. V42’s were available with 285hp KAD300-DP’s, 260hp KAD44’s and 230hp KAD43’s. The KAD300’s were the most popular option and offer top speeds of 34-38 knots. The V-drive configuration continued to be available into the 00’s, namely 480hp 74P’s giving 35-37 knots. However, by 2005 Volvo’s D6 engines were being mated to sterndrives and, consequently, as well as KAD300’s, the V42 was then being offered with a pair of
310hp D6’s, giving 36-39 knots. When it comes to running costs, savings can be made by doing much of the engine maintenance and service tasks yourself. Servicing of the KAD42 and TAMD engine is very straightforward, with just a little extra attention needed with the head and valve gear on the 24 valve KAD44 and KAD300 engines. Boats fitted with these engines will need regular checking and adjustment of the tappets, but again this is something that you can do yourself. So what to buy, shaft or sterndrive? When it comes to economy and mpg, the sterndrive will usually win hands down. Early sterndrive boats fitted with the 230hp and 260hp’s may not have the agility and speed of later boats, but they should provide similar economy, or just under 2 nmpg, at cruising speeds. Shaftdrive versions are very rare. If you plan to go great distances, running a shaftdrive boat of this size is going to cost you more in fuel, at approximately 1 nmpg at cruising speeds, although you will save money when it comes to the simpler servicing demands when compared to a sterndrive boat. Most examples will still have their original engines. However, we have seen

one V40 re-engined with 315hp Yanmar diesels, giving a cruising speed 25 knots and an approximate top speed of 35 knots. Engines are accessed by a large rectangular gas-strutted hatch in the aft cockpit floor. Inside, the engines are mounted fairly close together, leaving limited space between them. The hatch allows a decent amount of access to the top, and there is a narrow checker-plated inspection area in front of the engines. A generator was an optional extra across the three models and, if fitted, is mounted on the starboard side of the engine bay. On
the opposite side you will find the battery banks, which are usually concealed in a battery box. Fuel and battery shut offs are located inside two dedicated cockpit lockers on the port side. Conclusion High quality, ‘just right’ in terms of size for coastal and cross-Channel forays, and easily handled by two, this opencockpit V trilogy is simply hard to beat. Find a well maintained example and you will struggle to match it for value, space and performance.
Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a IIMS or a YDSA accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

tested Yamaha F100F and F25G PRICE FROM
£10,299
PRICE FROM
£3,469
Yamaha’s newest additions to the four-stroke outboard family are the F100F and the F25G. The suffix letter denotes the generation of that particular output, so what we have here is the fifth incarnation of the F100, and the sixth of the F25 (the E designation wasn’t used). We were invited out to Sweden to test both of these new engines on a number of different craft. F100F The F100F uses a new design four-cylinder, 1.8 litre, inline, 16 valve, single overhead cam engine combined with a new lower unit and a new range of propellers with SDS (shift dampener system). Other changes include a new top cowl, with improved airflow design for better water separation and produced from resin moulding material for a lighter weight, a single power trim and tilt cylinder, again to reduce weight and a new two-piece split upper casing. The result is an engine that weights 162kg in long shaft configuration, and 166kg in extra long shaft format. This is a saving of 7kg each over the previous F100B, making it the lightest in its class. It is even a fraction lighter than its 8 valve competitors. Putting it up directly against the Yamaha F100D, on paper, it delivers better economy, faster acceleration, higher top speed and lower levels of noise and vibration. The noise reductions have been possible due to a new intake manifold and silencer that is also said to improve low speed stability. 64

On Test We tried the F100F on a Buster XL, a Yamarin Cross 60C, a Finnmaster 55 and a Grand RIB G580. On the 1280kg Yamarin, the engine topped out at 31 knots for 5700rpm. On the 980kg Finnmaster, the 974kg Buster and the 940kg Grand RIB we saw 35 knots for 5,800rpm. On the Yamarin, the noise levels were quite high, but this was more due to the enclosed cabin acting like a drum. Acceleration was good, particularly on the lightweight RIB where we were up on the plane in 3 seconds, hitting 30 knots in 10 seconds and flat out in 15 seconds. Cruising economy looks pretty good too, with the Buster burning 0.7 litres per nm at around 25 knots and the heavy Yamarin clocking F25G comes with tiller or remote steer, manual the same at 21 knots, and 1.2 litre per nm when flat out. The best economy was, or electric start and has a powertrim option unsurprisingly from the lightest boat, with the Grand RIB traveling 1.7nm per litre at 20 knots, that’s 7.7nm per gallon. F25G The New F25G bills itself as the lightest 25hp four stroke ever, and at 57kg it is a whopping 20kg lighter than the Yamaha F25D, 11kg lighter than the direct injection Evinrude E-Tec two-stroke and only 9kg heavier than the old-school two stroke Yamaha that we are no longer allowed to buy in the EU. single overhead cam and two cylinders. It has a battery-less fuel injection system, a 16A alternator, a variable trolling system for ‘slower than idle’ trolling and an updated ergonomic tiller handle with repositioned gear shift. It also claims to have improved, built in carry handles for greater portability, but even as light as it is, I’m not sure 57kg is portable for most of us. If you do need to transport it, the F25G comes with resting pads on two sides, and can be laid down in these two orientations. Performance wise, even by Yamaha’s own figures, it only matches the F25D for top speed and noise and vibration levels. It does, however, offer improved acceleration, better fuel economy and easier starting, according to Yamaha.
The trolling control of the tiller steered model was a little tricky to use due to its location behind and under the gearshift
On Test The first thing to note is just how compact the engine is. Even without an old model alongside, the change is very apparent. In fact it looks more like a 15hp than a 25. We tested the F25G on a pair of Buster S models, a Linder 445 Max and a Pioner 14 Active, which gave us the opportunity to try both the tiller and remote steered version of the new engine. These are all relatively lightweight boats, being either aluminium or plastic, and ranged from 290kg to 426kg. All boats were tested with two on board and, despite the weight difference, all boats topped out at between 23.4 and 24.2 knots. On the

tiller steered Buster, the engine was noticeably vibration free, and this is where it would have been felt. Acceleration was brisk and Value 4/5 the engine ran smooth. Sitting right on top of it, the noise levels Usability 4/5 were quite high, but no worse than you would expect from any Performance 5/5 engine of this size. The tiller throttle travel is good and the big chunky gear selector is nicely positioned and easy to use. The trolling device dropped the revs down to 750, which is 100 below normal idle speed, and allowed increases in 50rpm increments up to 1050rpm. The positioning of the trolling control, just aft and under the gearshift lever, meant it wasn’t as easy to use as it could have been. On the heavier console boats, the engine sometimes took a little while to get the boat planing, particularly on the Pioner when we had both crew aft. Having said that, on the Linder, which was the heaviest boat, the engine was lively and punchy with a decent pickup, so it goes to show that weight distribution and hull form will always matter with boats and engines of this size. Despite the smoothness of the tiller steered version, we did get noticeable vibration through the aluminium hull on the Linder. Best economy was, surprisingly, not recorded on the lightest boat, the tiller steered Buster, but on the Linder, where we were getting 2.9nm per litre (13.2 nm per gallon) at 14 knots. At speed, the best economy was provided by the Pioner, at 2.6nm per litre (11.8 nm per gallon) at 22 knots. Yamaha claim the new engine will start on a single pull and, although they demonstrated it does, I found it usually required two, so maybe there is a knack to it that I didn’t master on the day. Bistro and Co Alfresco £79.99 Smokeless BBQ Grill PRICE
For some time we have been on the lookout for a small, easy to light BBQ for use when we are away on the boat, and portable enough to use bankside or even on a beach. roupe Beneteau, the French boatbuilding behemoth that builds both Beneteau and Jeanneau boats, as well as their upmarket offshoots, Monte Carlo and Prestige, has also been collecting a few famous old US brands in the last few years. You may have known that the Four Winns brand is now owned by Groupe Beneteau, but did you know that Wellcraft, Scarab and Glastron have all also found a home under the 134 year old Beneteau umbrella? These US brands became part of the Beneteau Group in 2014 when Beneteau acquired Rec Boat Holdings LLC, and one by one these famous old brand names are returning to UK dealerships. Next month we will bring you a test on one of the new Wellcraft models, but this month we are concentrating on Glastron, specifically
the flagship model, the GS259, a model name we have seen before but now in a completely new format. First things first, if the Glastron GS259 looks familiar, it is because its not the first time the hull has graced our pages. Sister brand Four Winns has a V255 model in its line up, which we have tested, and both boats are built on the same hull. From the gunwale up, and

some of what is inside the boat is different though, so it will be interesting to see how it stacks up to the V255. When we tested the Four Winns, we said that we thought that it was one of the best handling 25ft sportscruisers we had ever driven, so the Glastron has lots to live up to. Down below, in the accommodation, it is quite difficult to find many differences between the models. The Glastron gives you an almost identical layout, with an asymmetrical convertible dinette forward, with storage below and lots of light and space, a galley to port, a toilet compartment to starboard and a midships berth aft, below the cockpit sole. The dinette seating is plentiful, helped by the hull shape retaining width all the way forward, and could certainly house a family of four, but like its sister ship, the boat comes with a small table that doesn’t make full use of the available seating area. The storage below the dinette is easily Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
accessible via lifting hatches, but the hatch panel below the shorter, port, seat is so small that it will limit what can be stored in this area. An overhead hatch, plus a pair of similarly sized square skylights aft of it, and some slender hull windows provide plenty of light in the cabin but with no opening ports, ventilation is only provided by the hatch and the companionway door. Headroom within the cabin, aft of the

dinette, is around 6ft, with 6ft 3in at the galley. The galley comes with a single sink, an optional electric fridge, an optional microwave oven and a small amount of open storage. The lack of any hob down below can be offset by choosing the optional single electric hob in the cockpit.
A hob is not even an option on the cabin galley, so well worth considering for the cockpit
Opposite the galley is the toilet compartment and, like the galley module, this could have been taken straight out of the Four Winns. In here you get 5ft 11in headroom, a toilet, sink and shower. A single small non-opening window provides a little natural light but electric lights and ventilation more than compensate. Storage in this compartment is in short supply, but just outside you have a couple of large open fronted lockers. Moving further aft and you have the boat’s main sleeping quarters running thwartships beneath the cockpit. This offers a rather generous berth, at 6ft 10in long and 4ft 6in wide, and a decent amount of sitting headroom on the port side with an opening port into the cockpit for fresh air whatever the weather. Along the aft bulkhead there are three huge open

fronted lockers that should provide plenty of storage for the occupants during an extended stay onboard. A curtain across the entrance supplies privacy for this berth, if you have guests onboard. The companionway between cabin and cockpit comprise a pair of open steps, a plastic bi-fold door and a lifting companionway hatch. Out in the cockpit is where you will find the most differences between the GS259 and V255, with a semi-reversed layout. The helm is in the same position, and uses a very similar design, but that is where the similarities end. On the port side you get a fore and aft bench seat, with cushions at either end so you can lounge in either direction, and behind this is the cockpit galley. As standard, this just comes with a sink, which is rather limiting, so you may want to tick the refrigerator and hob options, particularly the latter, considering the lack The main berth beneath the cockpit offers a huge of one down below. The hatch below the double and a useful amount of open storage sink provides access to a large storage area but, with a rubbish bin mounted on the inside of the hatch, this space is mostly already used. Opposite the galley you have a particularly sociable and versatile dinette arrangement. With the backrest of the helm seat swung forward you get a huge U-shaped seating area that will easily take a family of four. The cockpit table is a little on the small side, but that aside, this looks to be a great space. For extra versatility, the backrest of the transom seat can also swing forward to provide a nice aft facing seat for two on the bathing platform. The seatback can also fold completely flat to create an aft sunpad. The standard swim platform is reasonably small, but perfectly adequate for day to day use. the extended platform as fitted to our test boat adds some useful space, but at the expense of increased berthing fees. The Glastron etched mat as fitted to our test boat is another optional extra but provides good non-slip properties and is very comfy underfoot. Cockpit storage is provided by ample space beneath the dinette seating, notable the huge locker under the transom seat. To gain access to the boat’s engine, the whole transom seat assembly lifts, but the lifting range is not great, so some limbo skills may be required. Once in, however, you have a decent amount of space to work around the engine, providing you watch where you tread. Our test boat was fitted with the smallest 250hp V6 petrol option; other

Alongside the helm there are three moulded steps to take you up and through the opening windscreen for foredeck access. Up here, bow rails are an option that our test boat didn’t have. Personally, I would choose them, even though aesthetically it may look better without. Instead, you get as standard, two low mounted coachroof handrails to help you on your way to the bow where you will find an anchor locker and an optional concealed anchor winch. The locker is large and deep, but the access hole is rather small, which means it’s use is limited for storage. Underway Based upon how impressed we were with Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
the seakeeping of the Four Winns, we were expecting good things from the Glastron. We were also very keen to see how it performed with the 250hp engine, compared to the 280hp motor fitted to the V255. Firstly. The GS259 is a very easy boat to drive. The helm is excellent in all positions with a comfortable seated position for cruising, a nice leaning stance for fun, ‘throwing it around’ type boating, and a commanding standing position for when maneuvering at close quarters. The steering is light and well balanced and, regardless of how you try and mistreat it, the boat delivers a forgiving ride. I’d go as far as to say that it flatters the helmsman, with any mistakes quietly hushed up with no drama. It grips well and turns tightly and neatly with little loss of speed,
77
and it has an agility that belies its height and bulk, acting like a proper sportsboat if you drive it hard. Surprisingly, despite having one of the smallest engine options, it never felt particularly underpowered. A little bit of extra pick-up and mid range acceleration wouldn’t go amiss, but it certainly had acceptable power with the 250hp motor, and was surprisingly less than a knot down on top speed over the 280hp Four Winns. I’m sure the extra 50hp of the larger engine options would provide an greater level of performance, but with the additional weight that they bring, I’m not sure it would be an option worth paying extra for, considering how well matched this hull appears to be to the V6 engine. My only caveat to that would be if watersports were a big part of your boating, where the extra hole shot and mid range power would probably be beneficial when towing. Again we found ourselves testing this hull in some quite choppy conditions. We may have been out in the Med this time, rather than Swansea Bay, but anyone who boats in the Med will know just how blowy it can get in the afternoons, and we were in

a good force 4, with a decent short chop to contend with. We were not disappointed. There is something about this hull that allows it to tackle a head sea like little else at this size. I kept waiting for the bang as we motored at cruising speed straight into some horrible waves but it never came. The hull is equally capable in both beam and following seas, although in the case of the latter a little more bow lift would have been nice and made for a drier ride. This hull shape is prone to throwing up a bit of spray, which is why no-one should order one without ticking the option for a windscreen wiper at the helm. Despite the spray, if you adopt the seated position, the helm is very protected behind the screen,
78
July 2017
although that protection does not extend all the way aft, so does not afford the same dry ride to anyone seated on the transom seat during a choppy passage. Conclusion With the GS259 and the Four Winns V255 being so similar in terms of price and facilities, the choice of which one to go for is a tough one, and is going to come down to the subtleties of the styling and the cockpit layout. If I’m honest, I think I would find it hard to choose. If you are in the market for a 25ft sportscruiser, both of these boats must be on your shortlist. Get onboard both of them and choose with your heart. I can put your head at rest
