At Motorboat Owner we tend not to visit many overseas boat shows, although looking at this issue you might not believe it. Hot on the heels of London are two of the most relevant overseas shows for a British based boater, and we couldn’t help but jump on a plane to take a closer look. First up there is Dßsseldorf, interesting as much because of its size, as the variety

the lesser known Helsinki Boat Show, and if there ever was a show with the largest concentration of practical and modestly sized boats, this is it. In fact we have tested one such boat in this issue, one of my top five favourite boats in fact, the Targa 32 from Botnia Marin. The added advantage of Helsinki is that it is a great city to visit in February when the sea is often frozen and you can take a walk across the harbour. Of course, personally, I think both of our home grown international boat shows are of products on display. I haven’t done the still the best, but if you fancy a maths personally, but I read on an Internet weekend away to somewhere a forum that in m2 terms, Düsseldorf little different next winter, why not occupies six times the floor space of the head to Düsseldorf or Helsinki, and London Boat Show, and a large percentage coincide it with a really interesting of that is given over to motorboats of boat show. It’s got to beat all shapes and sizes and their associated sitting at home as kit. It’s one of those shows that I think another winter everyone should visit at least once. Almost gale blows immediately after Düsseldorf there is through.

NEWS One in three kill cords fail says RYA Throughout the summer of 2015 the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) undertook a survey to investigate the causes of kill cord and kill switch failure, and the results show that a staggering 1 in 3 kill cords fail. With 1016 survey participants (90% UK and 23 countries), the RYA say the majority of respondents stated that they had never experienced a kill cord or kill switch failure. However, a third described a failure of either the kill cord, kill switch or both, with problems occurring across engine sizes sub-4hp to 150+hp and 73% of problems reportedly occurring in engines aged 2-10 years. “The aim of the survey was to analyse the failures identified and see if there was any commonality of cause”, explained Rachel Andrews, RYA Chief Instructor. The survey also revealed over 65% of respondents kept the kill cord ashore or in a locker on the boat. However, almost 30% of respondents indicated leaving the kill cord attached to the kill switch when not in use. The RYA warn that this could potentially lead to a number of issues, such as UV and salt degradation, or potentially fatiguing the kill switch spring mechanism, possibly reducing its effectiveness. The RYA went on to outline the stated reasons for the failures, these were, the kill cord came apart because of rusty metal components (the crimp or clip), the kill cord snapped with no inner cord, the kill cord lost elasticity and stretched, and finally, the kill cord outer cord perished and just left inner core exposed. The survey also highlighted problems with after-market kill cords, which are often easily available and cheaper than OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) kill cords, where instances of the switch attachment jamming as it was too tight fitting, or was too loose to activate it. Another area highlighted was user error, it was not attached properly, “too much friction and the kill cord may not work” the RYA said. “The results of the survey show that the good practice of testing a kill cord before setting off is fairly widespread and it is important that this habit continues to be emphasised on RYA courses” Rachel concludes. For more information and advice about kill cords visit the RYA website. Left, a kill cord with fatigued and perished outer core 6

Interesting Dell Quay Conversion?
After the very interesting article on the Dell Quay Ranger 27 in the December 15 issue, we saw this boat up at Beaucette Marina in Guernsey. It is an interesting conversion, is it a Dell Quay Ranger 27? Ian Ruskin The Associate Editor replies: Thank you for your email. We spotted this boat too on our last visit to Guernsey, it certainly looks like one. I contacted Martin Ray, our Guernsey Dell Quay Ranger correspondent and he told us “I will tell you as best I know, the boat is indeed a conversion of a Fairey Huntsman and it was completed in the mid 80’s for the owner by Terry Gill, or the ‘Ranger Doctor’ as we call him. The hull was shortened slightly and a new transom was fitted so that a pair of four cylinder Volvo AD31’s with 290 duoprop outdrives could be installed. Terry has repaired many Dell Quay Rangers over the years and as the Huntsman hull was of very similar design he had no problem in doing the conversion, and a good job he did do.” Thank you Martin.
Dometic Gas Checker GC100 review
I was interested to read your review of the Dometic Gas Checker in the February edition. It would have been very useful last summer when I ran out of gas! It would not, however, have prevented such a situation, only given me more warning. However, I have just paid the same amount to have the gas box of my Freeman 22 enlarged to take two 4.5kg Calor bottles, so now I don’t need it! John Raper Editor replies: A very practical solution to the problem John, and one I thoroughly agree with. Unfortunately not all boats have the luxury of space for a second bottle.

Downloading and saving the magazine
Just a heads up, as I may not be the only one. I always download the issue on my iPad for reading later, but by the time I get around to reading it, it has always disappeared. Tonight I discovered that if I pressed the “read in ibooks” option at the top of the pdf, it would save it so I could read later. Ok, I know everyone probably already knows this. But it may just prove useful if you mention how to keep the magazine on the iPad for future reference. Great magazine by the way. Nigel Bartlett Editor replies: We have mentioned it before, but it doesn’t hurt to offer a reminder. iBooks is a great way to store the mag on an iPad.

Plastic teak sealer
Another great edition of the mag, although I did wonder if in fact it was the 1st April edition when I read about a “sealer for plastic teak”. This sounds like a cover for an umbrella ‘to keep it dry’. Richard Hayes Editor replies: While plastic teak won’t absorb stains in the same sense as real wood, it can get marked by everyday products on the boat. If you don’t believe me, read our ‘Tested’ section this month where we have put the product through its paces.
Boat transport troubles
Looking at the letter you published on moving a boat by road, it looks as if a specialist boat moving company was not used, if it had been I suspect the damage wouldn’t have occurred. I was told the maximum acceptable height of my boat well in advance, and when the proper low loader arrived it was all packed up and ready. No mention in the letter was made of insurance. My experience was that the transport company had an upper limit, and I had to pay my insurance company extra for the road transport. Gilbert Park Editor replies: An interesting point Gilbert, especially about the insurance aspect. Diligence is clearly needed when selecting a transport company, and nothing beats a recommendation from a happy boater, so ask around the marina or boatyard before choosing.

he DĂźsseldorf boat show is claimed to be the largest in the world, spread over 17 halls and taking up around a quarter of a million square metres, but despite its closeness to the UK, the ease of travel in getting there, and the fact that I have been in this industry for approaching 20 years, I have never actually visited the show. With the dates of the 2016 show keeping it nicely apart from the London Boat Show, 2016 was the year to put that right. The show is well laid out with each of

On top of these there are nine halls dedicated to motorboats of all sizes, and related equipment. Of course not all halls are going to be of interest to everyone, but with so much to see you really need to allow at least two full days to get around. really hadn’t allowed ourselves enough time. Next time I would plan to be there for three days. Travel is simple. As long as you book a flight to Düsseldorf airport, code DUS, and not Weeze airport, that some low cost carriers call Düsseldorf, the show is a 20 minute bus ride away. What’s more, the bus is free. If you want to stay a night or two, the town is a short taxi ride away, and hotels are plentiful and not too expensive.
If you are UK based and looking to buy a boat, I would still suggest Southampton or London are the best place to talk to local dealers, but if you fancy a boat show with a difference, one where you are guaranteed to see some interesting boats that you won’t see at a UK show, then put the dates 21st to 29th of January 2017 in your diary and start planning. Just remember to pack your walking boots and, if you can, avoid weekends. It gets very, very busy.

f you want to see lots of small, affordable, well-built, practical boats in one location, there is no better place to go than the home of the aforementioned vessels, Finland. The Helsinki boat show, VeneBåt is held in early February and, although it is not on the same scale as Düsseldorf, it certainly holds it own in this market sector. Spread over three halls, Helsinki offers an opportunity to see all the iconic Finnish brands in one place. Brands such as Botnia, Sargo, Bella, Flipper, Aquador, Grandezza, XO, Nordstar and Yamarin are all represented, as well as many other well-known Scandinavian builders. We took our camera on tour to snap the latest models from these manufacturers.
Bella 500BR
Bella were exhibiting a couple of new models at the show, to complete an already extensive line-up of small day boats and cruisers, but it was the 500BR that caught our eye. If the funky colour schemes, nicely appointed interior and practical layout aren’t enough to tempt you, how about a starting price of under £20,000 with a 60hp Mercury outboard? The aluminium hulled 360 is a 2+2 berth boat offered with a range of twin diesel engines from Volvo, Yanmar and Mercury. The largest engine option should deliver a top speed in excess of 40 knots. The Yamarin 81DC features a very distinctive bow, with a built-in docking light. Yamarin told us they want everyone to know a Yamarin when they see one coming towards them, so expect this feature to filter down through the range. The hull incorporates an innovation that Yamarin call Petestep®, which was developed in boat racing circles and is said to provide a smoother and quieter ride in heavy seas, as well as excellent handling and improved fuel economy. With the greater prominence of Botnia and Sargo, it is easy to forget that Finland has another manufacturer of wheelhouse walkaround boats up to 40 foot. Unlike its rivals, this Patrol, as the name suggests, is outboard powered and is available with an engine of between 130hp and 250hp. Pricewise, the 24 with a 250hp outboard should be a little over £100,000. UK dealer: Nordstar UK www.nordstar.co.uk
Nordkapp Noblesse 605
The new 605 is the smallest of the Noblesse range and offers a compact trailable family sports and day cruiser with a small cabin for storage or occasional overnighting. The cockpit offers seating for up to seven and power is supplied by a single outboard of up to 150hp. With the smallest 90hp engine option, you should be able to put a 605 on the water for around £31,000. UK dealer: Wills Marine Ltd www.willsmarine.co.uk
AMT 190BR
Honda boat partner AMT has launched a 190 Bow Rider model to fill a very small gap between their 185 and 200BR models. In the process they appear to have forgone their trademark grey and white livery for a new all-white look. A new hull design is said to be able to achieve almost 40 knots with a modest 100hp, with other engine options ranging from 80hp up to 115hp. Prices should be in the £24,000 to £26,000 bracket depending upon engine choice. UK dealer: Golden Arrow Marine www.goldenarrow.co.uk/marine 22

KNOW HOW
Guide to hull wrapping
I f the evolution of hull wrapping has
captured your imagination, then the chances are that you fall into one of two categories. You either own a boat with some coloured gelcoat, or paint, that is showing its age, or you own an all white boat and are hankering after standing out from the crowd. Whichever category you fall into read on, because we hope to bring you the answers to all the questions you might be pondering. Coloured hulls look spectacular when the boat leaves the factory, but the sun’s harsh UV rays will degrade the finish over time and, after a few years, the lovely
deep gloss can start to look chalky, faded and dull. Of course polishing will bring the shine back and waxing will help to maintain it, but ultimately keeping it looking good once the rot sets in becomes a never-ending task. If you are already stuck in this cycle then wrapping could mean that your days spent polishing or repainting are a thing of the past. Wrapping has quietly been growing in popularity over the last few years, so we thought it was time to take a look at what is involved, how it works and most importantly, how much it costs. We went to one of the biggest names in boat

wrapping, Grapefruit Graphics, and spoke with Andy Yeomans to find out more. In the UK, Fairline were one of the pioneering large boat builders to push coloured hull options, from the 1980’s Turbo 36 with its blue stripe, to the 1990’s Targas with the traditional blue or, occasional risqué, turquoise topsides. Unfortunately the second hand market isn’t always kind to boats with coloured hulls, with room for negotiation on boats with damaged or faded gelcoat, or a colour that is considered by some to be less desirable. While all-white boats may usually be the safe bet when it comes to
a used boat; it hides minor defects and is easy to repair, it could, in cases such as the Fairline Targa, where buyers usually expected to find a coloured hull, actually make it less attractive. So an easy and affordable way to change or add a hull colour could not only lift the looks of your boat, it could go on to, partially at least, pay for itself when the time comes to sell, by adding a certain amount of pontoon appeal. And remember, with wrapping you don’t need to do the whole hull. As our case study shows, a simple stripe can be added or covered to quite a dramatic effect.
What is it?
Boat Wrapping has evolved from the commercial vehicles market, where vans, trucks and buses are often covered in graphics to advertise the operators company, yet can be easily removed with no damage to the paintwork underneath. In fact during the period the vehicle is covered, the paint is actually protected from environmental damage, and even minor physical scuffs, and it’s the same story for boats. With a hull wrap applied, the gelcoat underneath is no longer exposed to the suns harmful UV rays and remains in the same condition it was in when covered. In effect the wrap becomes a sacrificial layer, absorbing the UV. Whilst, in theory at least, adding a vinyl wrap could

be undertaken by an owner, it is best viewed as a job for the professionals. There is little room for error, and a poorly applied wrap will almost certainly look worse than no wrap at all. The process takes up to a couple of days, depending upon the area being wrapped, and it can be done outside, although not with the boat afloat.

PRACTICAL
What does the process involve? You might think that the wrap will hide imperfections, but that is not the case, with anything larger than hairline scratch showing through. This means that preparation is required to repair any damage, and clean the hull of any residue before the job commences. Talking about how it is applied to the boat, Andy told us, “The Vinyl that we use comes in 5ft wide rolls, and it takes three people to apply it. Starting at the stern, the vinyl follows the curves of the hull. Most boats can be done in one piece, but slab-sided boats, such as some large modern motorboats, may need two strips. Typically, anything less than 50ft can normally be completed
Durability
Vinyl isn’t as strong as gel coat or a hard paint. Andy explains, “A sharp impact will tear the vinyl, where as a blunt impact is likely to cause a ripple effect. However, repairs are possible and, if done with a little skill, will be difficult to spot unless you specifically look for it. “We wrapped the new Fairline Targa 53 that was at the 2015 Southampton Boat Show, which unfortunately
in one strip. If any joins are needed, we always overlap them facing aft, so the flow of water won’t pull it off. Once it is applied, we heat it up to reset the memory effect so that it doesn’t pop out on the curves.”
sustained some minor damage during transport. We repaired it and, once completed, even the dealers couldn’t find where the damage was. As time goes on, vinyl wrap will fade like paint and GRP in the sun, so repairing a wrap that has been on for a few years will be a little harder due to colour matching difficulties.” Grapefruit Graphics wrapped the new Fairline Targa 53, which was on display at the 2015 Southampton Boat Show

Longevity
How long the wrap lasts depends very much on the quality of vinyl used. Grapefruit Graphics uses MACtac from Tuning Vinyl. Vinyl used on cars tends to be thinner, so that it can follow the intricate curves on a car’s bodywork, and the likes of 3M vinyl does this well. But with fewer corners on a boat, a thicker and more durable vinyl can be used. With a polymeric film and several layers, it’s able to withstand the heat better and last longer. There is also the added benefit that MACtac is less expensive, passing a saving onto the customer. Of course it will
eventually degrade beyond repair which, depending on where the boat has been kept, will be in about six years. After then it will deteriorate quickly and require removing. Boat’s kept in sunnier climes, such as the Med will see shorter lifespans than those kept in the UK, and boats kept undercover will see the vinyl last longest of all.”
Removal The biggest worry of
it back. Heat makes the vinyl pliable, so either do it on a hot day, or use a hot air many boat owners considering having source. Once all the vinyl is removed, the their boat wrapped, is what happens at worst that you should be left with is sticky the end of its lifespan. Once the wrap is residue, which is easily removed with no longer wanted, or has degraded to a white spirit. The vinyl protects the hull point that it no longer serves its purpose, underneath, so you’ll be ready for a fresh it can simply be peeled off. Once a join has been found, pick at it until you can get wrap in a new colour, or just revert back to the original gelcoat. a grip on the edge and then start pulling
Conclusion A wrap is a quick,
easy and affordable way to transform a faded boat into a striking vessel that’ll make fellow boat-owners green with envy. But the real benefit is that it is not permanent, so if you want a bright pink Princess, a green Gobbi or a yellow Yamarin, you can do so, confident in the knowledge that it’ll not affect the value of the boat. In fact it might actually preserve the value by keeping the underlying gelcoat in good order.
PROS • Make your boat individual without affecting its value • Easy and cheap to apply • Protects the boat’s topsides CONS • Vinyl can damage fairly easily • Fiddly areas won’t have as good a finish as paint • It will have to be removed at some point COST for a hull wrap (approx) 30ft boat from £2300 40ft boat from £3900

1983 Fairline Turbo 36 BEFORE
The Turbo 36’s broad stripes had become opaque. In small places it had also been patched with paint and vinyl, which had to be painstakingly removed
John Frew’s 1983 Fairline Turbo 36 had a broad stripe just above the gunwale in what is best described as a very 1980’s blue. Not only this, but the years hadn’t been kind to the gel, which had lost its shine and was showing signs of the odd mooring knock. In one day, a two-man team
transformed the boat by covering just the stripe with a more modern dark blue vinyl. The result was a boat that immediately looks younger than its years, and one that, when the time comes to sell, will be more appealing to the used boat buyer. The price of this miraculous facelift? £1200.

declined, losing out to the nearby port of Shoreham. However, in the 1700’s, when seawater bathing became popular, Brighton and its beach had a revival. By the late 1700’s grand Georgian properties were springing up along the seafront and Brighton was becoming a fashionable seaside resort. King George IV frequented the town and was a major influence for much of the Regency-style architecture and landmarks of the area. Tourism grew again with the arrival of the railway connection to London in the 1830’s. Brighton is famed for its pleasure pier but in the 1800’s there were actually three piers in existence. There was the suspension-constructed Chain Pier, which was used as a ferry dock for crosschannel transport. The West Pier came next, which was more of a pleasure pier with a large pavilion at the end. Finally, of
course, came the 1722ft Palace Pier from the Victorian period, with its concert hall. With the French ferry connection lost to the established nearby deep-water port of Newhaven, the Chain Pier fell into disrepair and was later lost to a storm. A fire ravaged the West Pier and only the charred metal framework remains. Now Grade II listed, Palace Pier is the only pier in operation today and is known as Brighton Pier. With its numerous traditional and modern rides, it’s a very popular attraction. Brighton is a great place to people watch. Its streets are vibrant and full of colour and behind the decadent Regency façade you are sure to find hidden gems, such as remote squares, elegant buildings, quirky cafes, unique restaurants and an unusual mix of shops selling antiques, art and local produce. Approaches
There are no off-lying dangers or obstructions to worry about when approaching Brighton. However, we would recommend keeping a good look out for pot markers. Pots in this region
are usually well marked with flags, but are still something to be aware of, particularly if you are approaching at night. Entry to Brighton Marina is best avoided in strong onshore winds, as the entrance can get very confused with waves bouncing off the breakwater. Brighton Pier lies just over a mile to the west of the marina entrance. The Roedean School sits high on the chalky clifftop to the east of the town and marina. tower, is a very distinctive landmark to look out for. From seaward, the marina’s mass of grey curved buttresses, rising up in front of the white cliffs, seems impregnable at first. The huge Western Breakwater curves out southeast from the shore and the longer Eastern Breakwater cradles the marina from the east. The marina entrance lies to the west of the mass, between the east and west breakwater arms, and is buoyed by port and starboard markers. At night, the lights and densely populated shoreline of Brighton should be easily recognisable from seaward. The port and starboard beacon lights at the end of the west and east breakwater piers can be lost amongst
the background lighting, but should be visible from seven nautical miles off. On a spring tide there can be up to 1½ knots of current across the entrance. If you are approaching the marina from the west, by day or night, be aware that the high western breakwater masks the channel and therefore any traffic that may be coming out. We would recommend giving this pierhead a wide berth, keeping well south, before turning in. In heavier seas an approach from the south is advisable, as this reduces the effect of any wave backlash from the breakwaters. If your approach is from the east, give the Eastern Breakwater a wide berth. Although the entrance channel is dredged View from the west, close in shore. annually, storms can cause silt to form shoaling banks to the south of the Eastern Breakwater pierhead and on the eastern side of the inner fairway. Once through the pierheads, the channel favours the Western Breakwater, which narrows and slowly arcs around to the east. The speed limit in the marina is 5 knots. It is at this point you will see the marina entrance, which is marked by fixed lit port and starboard beacons, and has a large waterside development to port, with building work currently underway. The plans include a controversial swing bridge spanning the marina entrance, which may affect marina access. The developers did not respond to requests from us regarding rumours that the bridge plans have been abandoned. The marina is dredged to 2.0m below chart datum. However, on a very low spring tide entry, and access to the fuel berth, which is on the very eastern side of the marina, can be a problem for deeper drafted vessels. In 2015 the marina operator, Premier Marinas, invested £800,000 in commissioning its own dredger to help maintain the depths in the marina channel and entrance, and this is due to come into service this year. We would still recommend making contact

Bublé tribute acts. Riddle & Finns seafood restaurants, ‘The Beach’ on Madeira Drive and ‘The Lanes’, come highly recommended. The seafood platters are superb, but booking is essential. Finally if you enjoy traditional Spanish tapas we can recommend Casa Don Carlos (01273 327177) on Union Street in The Lanes.
Places to visit
If the weather is fair or foul, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained within the marina village, with its shopping arcades and restaurants. At West Quay there is bowling at the Bowlplex, a 8-screen Cineworld Cinema and the Rendezvous Casino, all just a 5-minute walk away from the West Jetty. Brighton city is just minutes away by bus, taxi or electric railway. Probably the easiest way to get there is by bus. The number 7 will take you through Kemptown and into the city centre. Otherwise it is approximately a 2-mile, 40-minute walk along the front to Brighton Pier from the marina. A subway from Asda car park leads under the marina roads towards the beachfront and Madeira Drive. If you are looking for a fun way of getting into town then there

is the historic Volks Electric Railway, which dates back to the 1880’s. The railway line runs along the beachfront (Madeira Drive) connecting Black Rock station and Aquarium Station, next to Brighton Pier. The train journey usually takes about 12 minutes. The railway is in operation from Easter until the end of September and an adult single fare is £2.80, and a return £3.30. A family return ticket for two adults and two children is £9.50. If you have bikes onboard, cycling this route should take you 15-20 minutes (the Electric Bikes Sussex store at Marina Square is useful for bicycle spares and repairs). A path known as the Undercliff Walk takes you around the inner marina. There is usually some form of event happening on Madeira Drive and its arches are lined with quirky arty shops. If you like shopping, Churchill Square Shopping Centre boasts high street brands and a visit to The Lanes is truly a must. Probably one of the most striking landmarks in the town centre is the Royal Pavilion. This exotic building was built as A trip into town to experience the shopping and a seaside ‘pleasure palace’ for King George café culture in Brighton’s North Lanes, is a must IV, and combines the oriental styles of

It is open from October to March from 10am–5.15pm and April to September 9.30am–5.45pm. Admission is £11.50 for Adults, £9.50 for over 60s and £6.20 for children aged 5-15. (10% off for bookings made online). Again, the number 7 bus will deliver you to the Old Steine bus stop just yards away. The intriguing Brighton Museum and Art Gallery can also be found in the grounds. On the seafront, and next to Brighton’s iconic pier, you’ll find Sea Life Brighton. Dating back to Victorian times and said to be the world’s oldest operating aquarium, it makes for a great family visit, with an underwater tunnel, glass bottom boat and Catfish tank among its attractions. It is open daily from 10am-5pm and entry is £22 per person (£16.95 online). Two or more people enter for £19 per person (£14.95 online) and it’s free for under 3s. A new waterfront attraction is set to open this summer. The British Airways i360, a 162 metre observation tower overlooking the old West Pier will have an observation pod that will climb up the

tower and offer 360-degree views over the town and out to sea. Prices are expected to be £15 for adults and £7.50 for children, with discounts for online bookings. Rides take 20 minutes during the day and 30 minutes in the evening. If you love the countryside, walking and superb scenery then go slightly further afield with a visit to The Devils Dyke. It is approximately a 30-minute bus ride (no 77 westbound from the Palace Pier bus stop N) to The Devils Dyke pub. Adult return fares are £4.50 and children aged under 16 travel free when travelling with an adult. Finally if you want to venture out on your boat then why not pack up a picnic and anchor out off Brighton beach. On a sunny afternoon the anchorage is popular with local berth holders, and from here you can watch the buzz of Brighton’s seafront from the comfort of your boat, perhaps even take the tender ashore for the obligatory ice cream. Another popular anchorage on a calm, sunny day is Cuckmere Haven, which is about 10 nautical miles east along the coast, past Newhaven. Outboard performance
Q I have recently been discussing with my
service engineer the performance of my boat, a Merry Fisher 725 powered by a 2009 Yamaha F150, 4 stroke outboard engine with 13 ¾ x 17” prop. Despite the engine being fully serviced and in excellent condition, fuel economy seems a little poor, at best 2.5 mpg at 4000rpm, and top speed at WOT is at best 22 knots in calm water with a following wind. Usually there is a maximum of 2 people aboard with just essential overnight kit and full fuel tank but no fishing gear. The boat has a clean hull. It has been suggested that I may need to change the propeller as the maximum engine revs just reach 5000 rpm as against the manufacturer’s quoted maximum of 6000 rpm. However, I have noticed that a similar, almost new MF 725 for sale but with a Suzuki 150 outboard which has a propeller significantly larger in both diameter and pitch than mine (15 ¼ x 19”). Is there any reason why a different engine should have such a different sized prop for essentially the same boat/power combination and is there any advantage in my changing my prop for something either larger or smaller?
A Looking at the specs of the Yamaha F150 and Suzuki DF150, I notice that they
use different gear ratios. The Yamaha uses 2.00:1 while the Suzuki uses 2.50:1, which I suspect would explain the significant difference in prop sizes between the two. Going back to your boat. It does sound like you need a different prop. The 150 engine has a maximum throttle range of between 5000 and 6000 rpm and produces 150hp at 5500 rpm, so you really want to be seeing at least this at full throttle. Typically when you change an inch of pitch, you change the RPMs by around 200. Theoretically changing the pitch to 13” should bring your maximum RPMs up to about 5800, but I suspect you may need to change the diameter as well. I note that the F150 is available with over 20 different propeller options, so exactly which one to get may need some input from your local Yamaha dealer. What I would say though is that with the right prop you should certainly achieve an increase in your maximum speed. I haven’t tested the 725, but based on my experience with the lighter 695, and the very similar 755, both powered by a Yamaha F150, I would expect your boat to achieve 30knots, or very close, once correctly set up. I would also expect to see a slight improvement in fuel economy too, with the 725 achieving something in the region of 3mpg, or slightly more, at around 20 knots. 44

Replacement door key
Q My boat has a sliding
companionway door with a lock/latch mechanism made by Southco. I only have one key and my local locksmith said he couldn’t get the blanks to cut me a spare. Is it possible to get hold of either a blank, or a precut key using the code on my existing key?
A These locks were used on many different makes of boats and the same lock and
keys seem to sometimes also be branded as Mobella. This link on eBay offers the keys you need, already cut to your code, for a very reasonable £2.99 each.

A boat for a drying harbour
Q I’m moving house soon to a town with
a small drying harbour and am looking for a boat that I can moor there. My requirements are quite specific and I don’t really know PRICE of any boat that fits the bill. Can you help? I want something relatively small, (18-22 £4,500 feet), with some decent open deck and some forward shelter, so probably a fishing style boat. I want it to be cheap to run (so probably a modestly powered displacement craft), and it needs to be able to handle a little bit of a sea state (so nothing too flat or lightweight). It needs to be able to take the ground, and I would rather not have an outboard, so I don’t have to worry about it getting stolen off the transom. My budget for all of this is £5,000 to £6,000.
A One boat brand springs to mind immediately. They are available in 16, 18 and 24ft
versions. They come with a tough displacement hull, often with small bilge keels that are perfect for drying harbours. They are usually diesel powered with a shaft, so simple and economical to own, and there are a few on the market within your price range. The boat in question is a Plymouth Pilot, and I think the 18ft version would be just about perfect for you. I’ve found this one (pictured) for sale at Boats.co.uk
Charts for an RL70C
Q I have just bought a new boat that has Raymarine
RL70C displays on both helms. There is no chart card in them and my CMap Max card from my old boat doesn’t work. I have been told that I cannot get the cards for these units any more and that I will have to fit new electronics. Is that really the case?
A If, when you boot up your RL70C, the start screen says ‘Raymarine’ then you
just need to buy a CMap NT+ card. These are still widely available. If, however, your RL70C says ‘Raytheon’, it requires CMap NT cards and I understand these are only available from CMap in Italy. Alternatively, you should still be able to find a used card for sale, but obviously you won’t then have the most up to date charts. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

CLASSIC CRUISERS
a complete guide to the best boats on the used market
Princess 286 U ndeniably Naval Architect, Bernard Olesinski’s iconic 30DS led Princess into a different design age in the 80’s, but as other UK boat builders turned their focus onto open cockpit med-style boating, Olesinski was drafted in again to help satisfy Mediterranean dealer demands. In 1983 Princess broke away completely from its traditional design and another star was born. The Princess 286 Riviera. Powered by sterndrives, the sleeklooking 286 was to be the first of the Riviera series of sportscruisers that, in
its literature, Princess described as ‘A beautiful offshore sportscruiser that combines high performance and superb seakeeping with extremely comfortable twin cabin accommodation and a very large cockpit’. The 286 moniker relates to the boats 28ft 6in length, which excludes the pulpit rail and bathing platform. At 30ft overall the 286’s main rival at the time was the slender Sunseeker 31 Offshore, which was almost identical in terms of layout and engine options. However, it was the 286’s 11ft beam that offered the advantage. Its chunky cockpit is just over

The 286 bears a remarkable resemblance to Olesinski’s Fairline Targa 33, which was introduced in 1984. In 1986 two larger, shaftdriven Riviera models were introduced, the 36 followed by the 46. In 1987 a smaller sister model was unveiled, the 266 Riviera, which offered similar accommodation as the 286, but in a smaller, open plan layout. The 286 Riviera ceased production in 1991 and, over a period of nine years,
approximately 440 were built. Production of the 266 continued until 1992, but sadly these were the last sportscruisers of this size seen from Princess. The Riviera range continued on into the early 90’s with new models such as the 346 and 406 in 91, the short lived 32 Riviera in 1992 and the 366 in 93, until finally the Riviera was replaced by the V-class range in 1994, and its debut model, the fabulous V39. Today the 286 is every inch an affordable, entry-level sportscruiser for weekending and long distance cruising. Re-engining is fairly common and diesel

It’s cosy, and there is plenty of the mid cabin and toilet compartment room for a couple to stretch out either to starboard. The corner L-shaped galley is set back to port, giving clear access between the cockpit companionway and saloon
storage either side. There is also plenty of storage available in the large lockers under the seating. It is worth noting that some movement or delamination can occur where the dinette and cabin seating joins the hull, but we are informed that these are easy DIY jobs to fix. The L-shaped galley is positioned in the port corner under a lovely, large window that opens to the cockpit, a feature seen later in Olesinski’s early open-plan Fairline Targa 33’s. The galley offers ample storage, two round sinks, a fridge, a gas hob and a full size oven. The size of the mid cabin is unfortunately one of the compromises of having such a large cockpit and comfortable saloon area. Inside you will find enough space for one person to change, a small seat with integrated storage, a narrow half height wardrobe and a double berth running thwartships under the raised helm position. The double mid berth itself is very much a crawl-in and under affair, and is fairly small in terms of width and depth. One
owner told us when they boat on their own as a couple, they often opt for making up the bed in the saloon area as it offers more space. A small sliding window into the cockpit and a side porthole provide light and ventilation. The boat’s small 35-gallon water tank can be found under this berth.

The toilet compartment is a decent size and is fitted with a washbasin with a shower mixer tap, a sea toilet and two eyelevel storage cupboards. We think Princess again missed a trick here by not having an ensuite door to the mid cabin, as seen on newer boats of a similar design such as the Sealine S28. Whilst down below examine the upholstery and wood surfaces for signs of leaks, in particular forward of the bow hatch, and the wood in the cabin beneath the helm position. Cockpit and helm The spacious and uncluttered cockpit is spread over two levels. Aft you have a huge covered cockpit area with generous U-shaped seating and usually a removable table, which converts to a large sunpad and occasional double berth. Like the rest of the boat every empty chasm of space is utilised for storage, for example you will find concealed lockers behind the cockpit seat back rests. The boats vented gas locker is located in the radar/cockpit coaming on the port side, capable of housing two Camping Gaz 907 bottles. for a bucket. The forward raised section of the cockpit has the helm to starboard. The boat has a pair of forward facing adjustable double seats, both with plenty of legroom. The double navigators seat is an important feature of this boat as so many sportscruisers of this size opt for a chaise-longue to port, which is not as comfortable or as easy to see out from on longer passages. With this setup, you can have four crew all facing forward and all with a good view, something that is rarely found, even on modern sportscruisers of a larger size. It would be great if these seats were able to reverse, or flip over, to face aft for those social cockpit occasions, but there is still plenty of seating and lounging space. Another fantastic feature of this boat is the lazarette located under the navigator’s

There is also a glove box in front of the navigator, which is useful for keeping bits and bobs, such as suncream, sunglasses and binoculars, safe while underway. The helm is usually finished in blue gelcoat and has two slanted dash panels with some chart storage in between. Dash dials and equipment are arranged either side of the compass. There is potential for fitting a small multi-function display on either panel, but this depends on what equipment is already fitted and where. The canopy is usually in two sections either

With the side screens removed the aft canopy and framework can be dropped down onto the transom in a matter of minutes. Moving forward, if original, the front canopy gently curves down from the radar arch to the windscreen. The low height of this can make berthing difficult, as you

can not usually stand up and helm, which restricts your view forward to through the windscreen only, unless the front canopy is removed entirely. Owners may have addressed this problem by heightening the existing canopy framework, and adding a removable front section with clear panels to see out forward while standing. This means that you don’t have to take down the whole front canopy, and makes it easier to boat in inclement weather. The owner of the ‘86 example viewed at Brighton Boat Sales had gone one stage further and had added an unusual but clever GRP hardtop. The 286’s relatively low air draft, at 2.54 metres to the top of the radar arch, also makes it suitable for sedate and low cost inland cruising. On deck Main access onboard and into the cockpit is from the side deck, or over the transom
56
March 2016
Princess’s first Riviera feels reassuringly solid and the modified V hull brings sporty handling
via the bathing platform and transom steps. A central dip in the transom allows access over the stern to the wooden bathing ladder and slatted platform. Here you will find a shower neatly concealed inside the transom step. The slight slope in the side deck, about a third of the way along the deck, is also one unmistakable feature of the 286. The side decks are a fair width, with a decent toerail, and offer good access to the foredeck with reassuring knee-height guardrails starting just forward of the radar arch. A grabrail on the outside of the radar arch would be a useful addition, if not already fitted. You should inspect around the stanchion bases for stress cracking in the GRP. The slightly raised foredeck is a massive, fairly flat, uncluttered area, which stylishly converges with the side decks at the bows. These boats will often have a blue stripe at the base of the windscreen. These can fade and may have been repainted. Hull and Handling The Princess 286 Riviera has a modified medium V hull with a deep V entry.
Owners are quick to praise the handling characteristics. Being wide, it is a very stable boat and, with Princess’s high-build standards, feels solid and capable out on the water. Unfortunately due to its beam and flat underwater sections aft, the 286 does have the reputation for slamming when running into a head sea. Trimming the bow right down and dropping a few revs usually helps counteract this. Traditionally the boat was finished with red and grey painted stripes along the waterline. Check the condition of these as they may be looking tired, colour matching for repainting or decal replacements could prove a worthwhile, but un-factored, expense. Engines The 286 was fitted with various single or twin sterndrive configurations. The majority of these were Volvos mated to single and duoprop sterndrives. However, a few very early boats were fitted with BMW 165hp engines. The first twin diesel boats were usually fitted with 110hp AQAD30s, which according to Princess were quite popular.

But by 1988 the top of the range twin diesel option had been upped to a pair of 130hp AQAD31/DPs, priced at £52,158. Shortly after came twin 200hp AD41/ DPs, which proved to be the most popular engine option in this model. From 1988 onwards the entry-level engine option was a single diesel 200hp Volvo Penta AD41 priced at £45,885. This was quite unusual for a sportscruiser of this era. The petrol options were twin Volvos, with 120hp AQ131s, 146hp AQ151s, 167hp AQ171s and 210hp AQ211. By the 90’s Twin Volvo 270hp AQ271/DPs were being fitted and proved the most popular petrol engine option. Be aware that early twin-engine models, particularly BMW powered versions, had single props and the 286 is known to suffer

from cavitation with these. A solution to this problem was to fit a spacer to each drive. Later models were mostly duoprops. Engine access is very good, via a large hatch in the cockpit floor. However, you will need to make sure you have removed all cockpit seat cushions to lift the hatch, as this in turn lifts the central seat section and catches on the outer seat cushions. Look for gas struts on this hatch, as it can be quite awkward to lift and keep open without them. Access to engines once inside the engine bay is excellent, and you can sit quite comfortably in front of the engines to change an impeller or a belt. The only thing that may prove difficult is getting in to grease the steering arms, which are usually right at the back of the engines. One owner suggested fitting an extension pipe to provide better access to the grease nipple. Down in the engine bay you will find a calorifier fitted on the port side. The 130-gallon fuel tank forms the forward bulkhead of the engine bay, with access to the top via a full width floor hatch, which in turn provides yet more storage for longer items such as oars and fishing rods. One owner recommended checking the battery tray for delamination from

the hull. You will find quite a few boats have since been re-engined, usually from twin petrols to twin diesels. We are aware of a 1990 example that has been re-engined from the original Volvo 5.7L V8 petrol engines to 170hp Volvo Penta KAD32’s. This is an excellent and very economical match for the size of boat, giving a ‘supercharged’ top speed of 35 knots and a cruising speed of 20-24 knots at around 3000rpm. With four cylinders, engine room space was also not compromised in anyway. The owners tell us that the new engines give two litres per nautical mile and around 2.5-2.8mpg overall. Another example is the 1987 boat currently for sale through Clipper Marine. This has been fitted with Twin 165hp Yamaha ME370 STI diesels, giving a 30-knot top speed. However, the 1988 boat for sale at Parkstone Bay Yachts is fitted with gutsy, new generation Volvo Penta 5.0l GXi
petrols, which is an unusual, yet sporty transplant. Newer re-engined versions will be favoured, but older Volvo Penta engines, such as the AD41 are reliable and easy to work on with good availability of parts. It is always important to check that the drives and engines, new or old, have been routinely maintained. If you have any concerns we would recommend that you have an engineer give them a thorough check over for you. Conclusion This original Princess sportscruiser is now a classic in its own right and is certainly a cheap way to get into coastal boating. Look for a well maintained example with engines and drives that still have good availability of parts. A big engined petrol 286 will deliver plenty of fun, but for economy go for an example with the larger diesel engines.
Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a YDSA or a IIMS accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

tested Marine AGlaze Synthetic Teak Sealer
PRICE per 100ml
£39.99
AGlaze new synthetic teak sealer has raised an eyebrow or two among the boat owning public. We have received a couple of emails about it this month, both along the lines of the one published in our ‘Inbox’ page querying whether a synthetic product needs protection at all. Well, like the GRP of your boat, it will probably be OK if left on its own, but a protective coat should help ensure it remains looking its best for as long as possible. With that in mind we thought we’d give the product a quick test. We will be applying it to a section of the synthetic teak deck on our Sealine this season, for a more ‘real world’ test, but this initial experiment gave us the opportunity to seek some instant answers. To start with, we took three different samples of synthetic teak. We thought different makes would act differently, and we were right. With some having a more grainy surface, stains and grime can find their way in more easily, and be more difficult to remove. With our test pieces in situ, we treated half with the new product, and left half untreated. Applying the sealant is easy, using the special sponge that has been
designed not to disintegrate on the rough surface. The product goes a long way and we only used a few drops on each of the treated samples. The information says that the little 100ml pot will cover 10-15m2 and, considering how little we used on our test pieces, I can believe it. it’s not cheap, but with the coverage promised, a single bottle should be more than adequate for all but the largest of boats. Once treated and dried, there was some slight darkening of the plastic, to a different level on each of the three teaks but, to be fair, hardly noticeable on any of them. We gave the sealant a few hours to dry properly before conducting our test. We chose six things that are likely to end up on your synthetic teak deck and that we know, from experience, can leave a lasting mark, old engine oil, red diesel, red wine, mud, cooking oil and squashed crisps. We applied each contaminant to each of the three different plastic teaks, on both treated and untreated areas. The first thing we noticed was that, like wax on GRP, the sealant made any liquid contaminants bead. On the untreated The sealant did a great job protecting the plastic plastic the liquid spread along the grain very easily, making the area stained much teak from spilled red wine 60

larger. This was most noticeable with the engine oil and diesel. After leaving the contaminants in place for a while, we set about cleaning them up with nothing more than absorbent paper towel. If dabbed, the beaded liquid lifted off the plastic without further spreading, whereas in the untreated area, the liquid had already spread to leave a much larger stain, despite the same dabbing technique. In most cases the sealant hadn’t prevented the stain taking hold, but had

There was the odd anomaly, such as crisp grease, where the sealant did a great job in protecting the Dek King and Permateek samples, but only offered a slight improvement on the Flexiteek deck. the counterweight that I could see was quite heavily covered in surface rust, and the area around the inlet port was rather badly corroded, with evidence of lots of white gritty material. Having come this far I just had to see what was inside, so I removed all of the crankcase bolts and the lower end bearing carrier and split the engine. What I found inside was truly staggering. The whole lower cylinder was
packed with a compressed material that turned out to be corroded metal. The inside of the forward part of the crankcase cover showed the extent of this engine’s problems, with the whole surface just flaking away. Things did not look hopeful. I guess your average outboard mechanic would, at this point, be on the phone to the owner explaining that the engine was beyond repair, but I thought I had

nothing to lose by continuing. I started by slowly scraping away the material that had completely encased the lower part of the crankshaft. It was loose material, but had compacted to form something that was akin to a weak cement mixture. It could relatively easily be chipped away and after about an hour the workbench was covered in what must have been around 200grams of a substance that was once solid metal. Even with the corrosion removed from around the crankshaft, there was still no movement whatsoever so the inner workings were now given a thorough soaking in a lubricating spray and left overnight. The next day, despite the hopelessness of the case, I started by removing the con rod bearing caps and the needle bearings underneath, before lifting out the crankshaft. The bearing surfaces were dry and showing signs of corrosion, particularly in the lower cylinder where, it was apparent, that most of this engines problems lay. In a healthy engine, the pistons should now be free to move up and down within the cylinder relatively easily, but both of mine seemed stuck fast. Starting at the top cylinder, some gentle tapping using a piece of soft wood soon

saw the piston pop out of the crankcase. At least here there didn’t appear to be much that couldn’t be fixed. Some light surface rust on the piston and cylinder walls could easily be rectified and, if both cylinders had been like this one, I think I could have had the engine running again relatively easily. Moving on to the bottom cylinder, I started with some gentle tapping, but there was no movement in the piston. Upping the effort to ‘vigorous’ tapping, there was still no movement. I now, progressed to a more ‘serious’ approach and using a long drift on the cylinder crown from

underneath, proceeded to wallop it as hard as I dare. Still no movement. Next, I tried heat, with a blowtorch aimed up and under the piston until it was all nice and hot. With some constant pressure applied with a vice, I then hit it some more. The result? Nothing. The piston was stuck so fast inside the cylinder that it was looking like it was going to take an almost destructive force to remove it. Considering the corrosion to the rest of the components, I felt like this wasn’t a battle worth continuing with. I am sure, given
enough time, I would have got the piston out, but I think the cost of a re-bore, that the cylinder would almost certainly have needed, a new oversize set of pistons and replacement of the bearings, as well as sorting out the corrosion, really does mean that I have to declare this engine beyond economical repair. Now normally that would be the end of that. The bits would have been scooped up, anything worth keeping packed away and the rest thrown in the skip, but this story has a twist. A couple of months ago,

reader Chris Brown from Cambridgeshire emailed me to say that he had, in his garage, a Johnson 35hp the same as mine. He informed me that it was in bits because, like mine it had seized up. He had started taking it apart, lost interest and it had remained boxed up for a number of years with the only likely future for it being a trip to the tip when he was next cleaning out his garage. The reason for his email was to kindly offer any parts that I might need during my rebuild. Not being someone who gives up easily, I was on the phone to Chris to explain my dilemma. He reminded me that his engine was also seized, but said I was welcome

to come and take what I needed. In fact when I arrived he insisted I take all the bits so I now have, albeit in boxes, another complete engine to use for parts. Before I got too carried away, I decided I would quickly strip this new engine down to the same position as the old one. There would be little point in carrying on if it looked exactly the same inside. As the engine was already removed, it only took a couple of hours before I was staring at the crankshaft and inner workings of this new motor. The good news is that, although it is seized, and showing signs of some surface rust, it looks, at least compared to my engine, to be in pretty good order. As I write, the new engine is soaking in lubricating spray ready for the crankshaft and pistons to be removed next month. I have a good feeling about the project once again and I have gone from staring defeat in the face, to being fired up with new enthusiasm. Ok it has taken a stroke of luck and a very kind offer from one of our readers, but I think Olive may yet receive a power boost this season. Thank you very much Chris.

ver since my first encounter with a Botnia Targa 31 around 15 years ago it has held a special place in my all time favourite boat list. I think it was partly because of the fact that the way it looked, and the way it behaved, were so very at odds with each other. My first trip out involved hitting almost 40 knots in conditions that would have slowed many other boats down to half the speed. All this in a boat that, aerodynamically at least, looked about as sporty as a potting shed. Of course nowadays we are much more familiar with the walkaround wheelhouse design with forward facing windscreens, so we are less taken aback and more used to seeing these tough boats battling through conditions that most owners would rather not be out in. The Targa 31 morphed into the Targa 32 in 2012, with the CFC (Comfort Fore Cabin) version that we are testing available from 2014. The CFC
option adds just over £5k to the price of a standard 32 and I couldn’t wait to get behind the wheel to see for myself what changes Botnia Marin had made, and most importantly, whether they had made the excellent 31, even better. Starting inside the cabin and up front you can immediately see an improvement in the size of the forward cabin. On the 31, the cabin was quite compact and consisted of a

pair of single bunks with a small standup area between. The standard 32 still has a similar layout, albeit with a little more space. While this layout is perfectly acceptable for the kids or as an occasional guest cabin, things have been significantly improved on the 32 CFC. The cabin is much larger because it has been extended further forward into the bow. The descent into the cabin is probably just as steep, but feels very manageable with a pair of offset steps, but the big improvement is with the berth itself. You can still specify two single bunks but with this CFC version you can now also choose from a selection of double bunk configurations. Our test boat was fitted with a large central double berth, which made the forward cabin on this 32 feel more than capable of being used as a master cabin, albeit with a bit of a trek to the onboard facilities. Headroom is great, The forward cabin coach roof of the CFC model reaches almost all the way to the bow at over 6ft aft of the berth, and there is Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

The table stores against the cabin roof when not in use. The backrest of the forward seat flips fore and aft
plenty of storage with lockers beneath the bunk as well as in the aft bulkhead on both the port and starboard sides. The cabin is separated off from the wheelhouse by a pair of wooden doors and a lifting companionway hatch that is held in place with a couple of powerful gas struts, so there is no danger of it dropping on your head if you are using the companionway at sea. Like the rest of the woodwork on a Targa, this is all of an exceptional high quality, with craftsmanship to match. There really are few other contemporary boats that can match the carpentry on a Targa. In the wheelhouse itself, very little has changed, and that’s not a bad thing because, despite its quirkiness, the Targa 31’s wheelhouse offered a very practical solution for cruising, dining and generally whiling time away onboard. The wheelhouse is 20cm wider on the 32, but unless you were to step from one, straight to the other, it is
difficult to see where this space has been used. I suspect everything has just been given a little more space to breathe. On the aft port side of the wheelhouse is the boat’s seating/dinette area, which comprises an L-shaped seat, supplemented by the navigator’s seat, which has a flippable backrest. In the centre of this area the boats table is cleverly stored up against the wheelhouse ceiling when not in use, and slid down a central pole into position when required. The table has a small folding leaf to allow easy passage past when lowered. This area should offer ample dining space for a family of four and, while it may not be the cosiest of saloon spaces, offers comfortable lounging, with space for a TV opposite on top of a storage unit with a large cupboard and two good size drawers. There is also some storage beneath the port side dinette seat, accessible via two cupboard doors on the front.
72
March 2016
The galley is compact and practical and has lots of adjacent storage
As mentioned, the forward dinette seat also acts as a forward facing seat for two when underway, and has an adjacent sliding door for crew deck access. Any further crew members will have to sit on the aft dinette seat, but this is still close enough to the action that they should feel very much involved. Like the 31, the galley is in front of the navigator’s seat underneath a lifting wooden lid that forms a nice large chart area when the galley is not in use. With the lid lifted, you have access to a two burner gas hob and sink. It’s a bit unconventional, having the galley under the windscreen, but it appears to
work well and you also have easy access to a huge amount of galley storage, with five drawers directly below the galley unit, and a further five drawers in the base of the seat just behind. The helm is on the starboard side and comes with a single three-way adjustable seat. The helm console has a lower section, which incorporates the steering wheel, throttles and bow thruster control, that quickly and easily pivots out for perfect positioning, whether standing or seated. In the upright position it also clears the way past the helm for easy access to the side decks from the sliding door next to

the helm. Above this pod is a panel with an array of switchgear, but there is nowhere on the helm to flush mount a multi function display. On our test boat a 12 inch display was bracket mounted forward of the switch panel, which actually works very well, or alternatively you have the option to flush mount a smaller display overhead where the engine instruments are located. At the helm there is a simple pull out stainless steel footrest that is perfectly placed when you are seated, but is easily pushed back against the bulkhead when you are standing, or if you need to pass through to access the side decks. There is also a cupboard, and a low-down drawer, in front of the helm, the former is perfect for keeping safety kit or other essential items that need to be easily accessible while underway. In the evening, the wheelhouse can be enclosed with curtains down both sides and across the aft opening window above the dinette seat. The front windows all
come equipped with reflective blinds for complete privacy. I would also suggest that, with all the lovely woodwork to protect from UV, the boat should be left in this closed up state when not in use. In the aft starboard corner of the wheelhouse is a companionway with two steps that take you down to the aft accommodation. There is no door here, but the design still allows for this area to be very private, as you turn into the cabin
The aft cabin also sports a single ‘pilot’ berth behind the cabin steps

at the bottom. Here you will find headroom for all but the very tallest of boaters, with as much as 7ft in the dressing area. Like the 31, the 32 has a three berth arrangement in the aft cabin. To port there is a very large double with, for an under wheelhouse berth, good height above. On the starboard side, behind the steps that you have just walked down, there is a single pilot berth that is accessed by swinging the steps out of the way. Realistically this berth is most likely to be viewed as a large, and very useful, storage area. Other storage in this cabin comes courtesy of a small hanging wardrobe, a couple of drawers, some open storage above the berth and some open hanging space for coats and waterproofs. There is also a handy chart pocket in the companionway. Despite being in the bowels of the boat, this cabin still has a reasonable amount of natural light, with portholes next to the berth, and a couple more in the dressing area/companionway. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
There is also a porthole in the single pilot berth. In the aft port-side corner of this cabin is the boat’s toilet compartment and, forward cabin aside, this is where you will see significant improvement over the 31. Gone are the pull out toilet on runners and spartan fit out, replaced by something that wouldn’t look out of place on a modern flybridge boat or sportscruiser. There is, of course, a fixed toilet, but there is also now work surface next to the sink, a nice wooden finish and plenty of storage. Headroom is also very generous at well over 6ft, and there is an opening port for ventilation. One of the very best things about any of

the Targa range, and other boats of a similar ilk, is the walkaround deck. On the CFC version of the 32, the deck isn’t one level, with a small step up from the cockpit and then two larger steps up to the bow in front of the side doors. This means it is not quite as easy to move around as a standard 32 but this is a small price, well worth paying, if you want that bigger second cabin. At the front you have the typical Scandinavian walk-through bow access, beneath which is a good sized anchor locker. The cockpit of the 32 is a bit of a blank canvas. It’s a good size, so you could easily stick a table and some chairs here, or it would make a great platform for fishing. In each aft corner there is a rope locker, which make useful make-shift seats, and on the aft end of the wheelhouse there are two fold-

This small second helm station is perched all the way aft of the wheelhouse, but is surprisingly practical, with three forward facing seats and all the necessary instrumentation repeated from the main helm. The flybridge is a standard feature but can be deleted from the spec if not required. In doing so you save around £3k on the base price. Back in the cockpit the whole floor is taken up with two large hatches that lift to reveal the engine bay. The engines are placed all the way aft, meaning you have

effortless. On the bathing platform there is a lifting hatch, which provides access to the drives and props to clear any wraps you may be unfortunate enough to pick up. Underway The wide range of engine choices mean you can spec a 32 for economy, with a single 400hp D6, or out and out performance, with 800hp in the shape of a pair of D6’s. Our test boat was fitted with a mid range pair of 260hp Volvo Penta D4’s, which gave a very acceptable top speed and comfortable cruising in the mid 20’s. There is no discernable hump, with the boat just easing onto the plane smoothly and progressively. Open up the throttle to 3000rpm and the boat feels relaxed and composed and, in the confines of the

wheelhouse, 30 knots feels more like a sedate 20 knots, such is the cosseting effect of the inside helm. In the wheelhouse, with the engines far behind you, noise levels were exceptionally low. The hull performed just as expected, with a soft ride while ploughing through the wake of the photo boat, and tight, grippy turns when thrown around, even at full speed. The deep vee hull that delivers this soft ride does also deliver quite a bit of spray over the front when bashing through, but that’s the beauty of this style of boat. The boat itself may be getting wet but you can stand or sit at the helm wearing nothing more than a T shirt and a big grin. The hull form also means that the boat leans more than expected in tight turns, but for me it is all the more fun for it. The forward facing three section windscreen, each with its own wiper, provides great visibility even when the spray is in full flow, and visibility aft is better than you might think, thanks to the aft wheelhouse window. The flybridge driving position is unusual, being so far aft, but you soon get used to it and find that the

This is only really an issue when manoeuvring at close quarters, and is easily overcome by standing up. Conclusion The Targa 32, in this CFC layout, has taken the very good, but somewhat functional, 31 and turned it into a more luxurious and comfortable family boat. It has done

that without losing any of its ruggedness, and very little of its practicality. In fact it still remains, for its size, one of the best seagoing boats on the market. The standard 32 will deliver all the same features, with a smaller front cabin and the benefit of onelevel walkaround decks. Which model to go for is a difficult choice. The premium for the CFC version is not that large, and it certainly feels like you are getting your money’s worth. I guess it will come down to how you want to use the cabin space and how many people you regularly cruise with. There is no escaping the fact that the Targa 32 is not a cheap boat, but when you step onboard and, more importantly, take it out to sea, you quickly realise that the expense

is more than price-tag deep. In short, if you want the best, you have to pay for it and, with the Targa 32, there is no question that you are buying one of the best boats of its size on the market.
