It was only a few days ago that I was driving around the Essex countryside in bright sunshine and with spring most definitely in the air. I even pulled over where the road runs alongside the Blackwater estuary for a look at the water. It was one of those days where you really felt like the season was almost upon us. The water was still, the sun was out and, despite a chill in the air,

Hopefully anyone who was lucky enough to get out during this briefest of spring spells, has had an opportunity to protect their boat again. It’s easy to get complacent about frost damage this late in the winter season, but it appears that now, and the next few days, is when any damage may occur. Maybe just take an hour or so to check everything is still safe and sound, brush the snow off the covers and sit back knowing that the Beast will be in retreat in a few days time as the real spring pushes it back from whence it came. Easter weekend is the traditional start of the season for many, and with it being only a month away, it is time to start thinking about recommissioning, and the annual chore that is antifouling. To get you inspired, we have tagged our useful antifouling guide onto the back of this issue. Happy painting.

I so wanted to be behind the wheel of a boat, rather than a car. Fast forward a week, and the ‘Beast from the East’ has dumped more snow on this part of the country than we have had all winter. Temperatures are in minus figures almost around the clock, and suddenly boating has been pushed back in favour of more suitable pastimes, like sitting in front of the telly with the fire roaring.

NEWS Oyster goes into administration One of the UK’s largest yacht manufacturers, Oyster Yachts, has gone into administration. The announcement came in early February when CEO of Oyster Yachts, David Tydeman, released the following statement on their website, “It is with sincere regret that we advise that the company has been unable to secure financial support to enable it to continue at this time and it is looking at all opportunities available.” The latest statement on the website reads “Oyster Marine Ltd and Oyster Marine Holdings Ltd is in administration. Oyster Brokerage, Oyster Charter, Oyster Crew and Oyster Palma are continuing to offer reduced services”. The news comes after it was widely reported that the company had an £80m order book going into 2018. Long established and well respected in the sailing community, Oyster are known for producing a range of high quality sailing yachts up to 118ft. It also briefly built a 43 foot jet-powered motorboat called the LD43 pictured, later known as the OM43. The company has two boat building yards, at Southampton’s Saxon Wharf and Hoveton in Norfolk. The administrators, KPMG, are now seeking a buyer for the business.
Landamores to build Jersey Boat range Jersey Boats are now being built by Landamores of Wroxham. Specialists in luxury launches and tenders, and once a contractor for quality yacht brand Oyster Marine, the historic builder (established in 1923) has taken on the lobster-styled, Jersey Boat range, which includes the 30 and soon-to-be-unveiled 36 flagship. Jersey Boats were introduced as part of the Arvor range which is owned by Brunswick. Then the moulds were bought and built by Essex-based, Boat Mouldings UK Ltd. 6

VAT on boats ‘Customs Warehousing Scheme’ Do you have a boat that is not yet VAT paid that you would like to sell in the UK? The Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA) has created a scheme with HM Revenue & Customs, so that boats may be offered for sale within the UK without paying the VAT up-front. The Customs Warehousing Scheme allows boats from outside the EU or from the Channel Islands, which are not VAT paid (or EU equivalent), to be offered for sale in the UK by ABYA affiliated brokers in compliance with the laws of England and Wales. The boat is imported in the usual way, using a shipping agent, and the Customs form completed with the necessary details. When the boat is sold, if it stays in the EU, the VAT becomes payable on the sale price, and if it goes back out of the EU, the VAT is not payable. A boat must have a minimum marketing value of £80,000 to be admitted into the scheme and boats for sale may be taken to boat shows and for sea trials, as well as the usual viewings by prospective purchasers. Seaward 27 E18 NEW BOAT The Cowes boatbuilder, Seaward has unveiled a new aft cockpit model. The new 27 E18 follows the pedigree of the Seaward 25, but offers a larger wheelhouse, a longer hull with a deep 3/4 length keel and an integral bathing platform. The model will be fitted with twin Yanmar 4JH 110hp diesel shaftdrive engines, providing a cruising speed of 18 knots and a top speed of 20 knots. Marina proposal for Hastings Proposals for a £500m regeneration project at Hastings, which include a 600-berth marina, have been put to the Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce. The 10-year project, known as Hastings Harbour Quarter, was presented to the Chamber by Michael Drain Architects in October 2017 and, if approved, could see works starting in 2021. Now four years into the project, Michael Drain presented it as a ‘regeneration catalyst’ that ‘will bring essential reinforcement for the fishing industry, strengthening of the tourism industry and job/housing creation’ with up to 1300 homes created. Artist impressions of the marina show a similar layout to nearby Brighton Marina, with a sweeping east pier protecting 600 berths from the south and east, with a shorter pier and entrance to the west. Current choices for moorings along this part of the UK coast include Newhaven, Brighton, Eastbourne and tidal harbour Rye.

NEWS The volunteer RNLI crew based in Drumnadrochit, on Loch Ness on the Caledonian Canal, have a new lifeboat station and a new lifeboat for 2018. There has been a lifeboat stationed at Temple Pier at Drumnadrochit since 2008 and the completion of the new £2.7 million lifeboat station coincides with its 10th anniversary. Furthermore, the majority of the money for the new station and boat came from the generous donations of two couples. With the current Atlantic 75 class lifeboat reaching ‘the end of its operational life’ it has been replaced by a larger, 35-knot, twin engine, Atlantic 85 class inshore lifeboat. The new boat is named after its donors, Sheila & Dennis Tongue IV, can now carry a fourth crew member and is equipped with radar and AIS. Both boats are pictured side by side above. Lifeboat Operations Manager Joanna Stebbings said “We’re so pleased to be moving into our new station, the old boathouse has served us well for nearly ten years but it’s little more than an extended garage. It will be a huge step forward to have proper changing facilities, a space for training and somewhere we can get the kettle on and warm up after being out on the lifeboat. As well as keeping the crew warm, it will be far better for the new lifeboat to be kept out of the weather and inside the station. The old boat has had it tough over the years and winter after winter left out in the elements has taken its toll.” The Loch Ness Lifeboat was called out 33 times in 2017 and is vital for safety on the 23-mile loch.

Fambridge River Festival The annual Fambridge River Festival will be held on Sunday 26th August and is set to be a celebration of all things maritime on the East Coast. Now in its fourth year, the free event will see an array of historic and traditional boats assembling at Fambridge Yacht Haven, on the River Crouch, and welcoming visitors onboard. Participating boats include the historic Dunkirk Little Ship Motor Torpedo Boat, 102, that was involved in Operation Dynamo, the 1900 Thames Sailing Barge, Ironsides, and the 31ft Gravesend Bawley, Marigold. The festival will also offer family fun with a treasure hunt and a rubber duck race, as well as a new Street Food Village, marine company stalls, demonstrations, live music and visits from marine emergency services. Boaters are invited to take part in 24-hour liferaft challenge for charity A Cornish sailing charity, Turn to Starboard, is calling out for ‘intrepid individuals’ prepared to spend 24 hours in a liferaft for charity. On Friday 18th May, a team of volunteers will climb into an inflatable liferaft and be floated out into Falmouth Harbour to raise funds for Turn to Starboard, a sailing charity supporting Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations. Volunteer Co-ordinator, Neil Triggs, said “The challenge provides a chance to experience what it would be like to be cast adrift for real. All equipment is provided, so those participating just need to climb aboard, sit tight and raise money for a good cause. The liferaft will be tethered onto buoys to prevent it being cast adrift and a support boat will be on hand to check on participants every few hours.” The charity hopes to raise £2000 as part of its Float-A-Boat campaign, providing money towards a new training boat. NEWS Government rejects CRT proposal to take over EA Waterways Non-Tidal Thames Harbourmaster/ Waterways Manager, Barry Russell MBE, recently addressed Thames users with the statement “Over the past few years we’ve had fruitful and positive discussions with the Canal & River Trust and Government about whether, and if so under what terms, the Environment Agency’s navigation responsibilities might be transferred to the Trust. CRT recently submitted their proposed terms for taking over our navigation responsibilities to Government. Ministers have considered the proposals and decided not to proceed with any transfer at the present time; however, they wish to keep the option open and return to it when they feel the time is right. We in the Environment Agency will continue to concentrate on ensuring we run our navigations as efficiently as possible, including looking at new ways to raise revenue and engaging with our boating customers over our charges review. We and CRT will continue to co-operate actively in the running of our respective navigations to ensure the best possible experience for all river and canal users.”
Jeanneau partners Freedom Boat Club The French boat builder, Jeanneau, has partnered in an ownership scheme called Freedom Boat Club, where members will soon be able to use a fleet of outboardpowered Jeanneaus across Europe. The Florida-based Freedom Boat Club is claimed to be the world’s oldest and largest boat club of North America, with 150 locations in 30 states of the USA and in Canada, and the alliance will see Jeanneau develop the franchises across its European dealer network. 14

Oil spill on River Lee In February disaster struck the River Lee in central London as an oil spill spread along the waterway. The River Lee runs from rural Hertfordshire into the heart of London, passing next to the 2012 London Olympics stadium. The spill was first spotted on 11th February and the Canal & River Trust teams were onsite within the hour, putting booms and absorbent pads out to try and contain it. Contaminated wildlife, such as swans, were rescued and evacuated from the thick, black sludgy waters to nearby centres and sanctuaries. Jon Guest, Canal & River Trust Waterway Manager, explained, “We are continuing to remove spilt oil and have closed Stonebridge, Tottenham and Old Ford locks to prevent oil spreading further. We’ve been really heartened by the response from people who live on, work on or love visiting the river, with many offering to help with the clean-up.” Jon explained that incidents like this happen too frequently on the River Lee, with discharges from Pymmes Brook, a waterway the CRT does not manage, into the Lee, from industrial sources, run-off from urban areas and numerous misconnections from residential properties. “This needs to stop. We’ve contacted partners, councils and MPs to ensure we work together to find a solution, and identify those responsible. We need to make sure this event is neither forgotten nor repeated.” Southern sections of the river remain closed to navigation, with the closure of locks to connecting waterways, such as the River Thames, in an attempt to stop the pollution from spreading.
Bavaria Nautitech 47 Power NEW BOAT Bavaria has added a powercat to its range. The new 14-metre Bavaria Nautitech 47 Power is powered by twin 225-300hp Volvo Penta D4 engines, giving top speeds of up to 22 knots and a cruising range of 1000 miles at 9 knots. Features include a large cockpit, a generous flybridge with bimini or hardtop option and a lifting bathing platform between the hulls. Inside it offers 6-8 berths, with a master ensuite double cabin occupying one hull, with another two double cabins, and a day loo, in the other. BSS certificate price rise A new four-year business plan by the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) Management Committee includes the first price rise in certification charges for eight years. BSS Examiners will pay a new price of £36 (excluding VAT) for each certification they issue to a boat, which is a £7 (ex VAT) rise that they will likely choose to pass on to customers. The new price will apply from 1st April 2018 and the committee intend to hold this for the four-year period, which is designed to coincide with the four-year lifespan of BSS Certification. A BSS certificate is the boat-equivalent of an MOT and a requirement for an inland boating licence, through waterways bodies such as the Environment Agency, Canal & River Trust and Scottish Canals. The price change is said to be in view of inflation, IT investment and training. BSS Manager, Graham Watts, said “The Scheme acknowledges that times are tough and boaters face other price increases associated with their boating activity, so we will remain committed to continued effectiveness and efficiency to hold down costs while delivering more results.” The BSS added that it will ‘continue to support research into the risks, such as carbon monoxide, as it has tangible benefits for boaters, not least the sharing of the best quality safety advice in the most effective ways.’
Boston Whaler NEW BOATS Celebrating its 60th Anniversary year, the US boat builder, Boston Whaler, has unveiled two new centre console models, the 190 and 210 Montauk. The 190 and 210 join the 150 and 170 Montauks in the range and new features include an integrated forward fishbox/storage console, coloured hull options, cushioned aft quarter seats and a teak floor option. The 190 will be fitted with a single 115150hp outboard, with 150-200hp for the 210. 16

t’s February, and there are always three permanent fixtures in my calendar for the month. Along with my birthday and Valentines Day, I always make room for the Helsinki Boat show. Not only is the Helsinki show full of really interesting boats, almost
none of which have sails on them, I also love getting a small taste of some proper winter weather, Scandinavian style. There is something very romantic about Helsinki in February and, with Vene Båt running during the Valentines period, I can’t think of a better place to take your other half for a cosy city break next year. Why not pencil the dates 8th-17th February 2019 into your calendar. You could always pretend that you didn’t know there was a boat show on! Unfortunately, I was there alone this year, but at least I had nothing to distract me from some of the more interesting new boats on show. Here is a selection.

Sting was a new brand we first saw at last year’s show, but this year they were back with a new model to add to their range. The 630 Fast Track, together with the new flagship 730 Fast track, now means that Sting has 10 boats in their impressive line-up, ranging from the 4.7m Open Pro, through bowriders, cuddy cabins, centre consoles and now, wheelhouse sportsfishers. The 630 can sleep three to four people, has a small galley and can be powered by an outboard of up to 150hp. Boston Whaler 230 Outrage
There is a new Outrage in town, and it comes in the form of the 7m 230. There are three versions of the new model available, Open Helm, T-Top and Hard Top, all of which are available with a single outboard of up to 350hp. The deep Vee hull and unsinkable build should provide the soft, safe ride that we have come to expect from this premium brand. Layout wise, you get a fairly standard centre console, walk-around design, but the designers have managed to squeeze in a small, but very useful, toilet compartment. Bella is another manufacturer that has joined the Aluminium revolution. The builders of a wide range of GRP boats, including Aquador, Flipper and, of course, Bella brands, they have added to their portfolio with a range of metal-hulled boats under the Falcon brand name. The range consists of four models, the BR5, BR6, BR7 and BR8, with layout variations of each also possible to create a wider range than the sum of its parts. With Bella being partnered with Brunswick, Falcon boats will all come with a Mercury outboard, ranging from 60hp on the BR5 up to a 300hp Verado on the BR8. Whether we see this range in the UK is uncertain. Aluminium is gaining popularity here for very good reason, so we will have to wait and see. AMT 175
Aluminium hulled boats are very popular in Finland, a fact that has not gone unnoticed by builders of Fibreglass boats such as AMT. Their new 175BR Aluminium blends a GRP deck moulding onto an Aluminium hull. Inside, the 175 is almost identical to the fully GRP 175BR, but below the gunwale the boat delivers the lightweight and tough properties demanded by the Finns, who use this type of boat as family transport around the many islands and out to their remote summer houses. The 175BR may be the first boat from AMT to use this material, but with the popularity of aluminium as a build material out here, I have a feeling it won’t be the last. The 175BR in either GRP or Aluminium is available with a Honda outboard of between 50 and 80hp. Buster Phantom Cabin
Buster are one of the older Aluminium boat builders in Finland, having started in 1955. Since 2016 the company has been owned by Yamaha Motor Europe NV, so no prizes for guessing which outboards you will find fitted to the transom. Until recently, the range consisted of a mix of small open boats, only recently breaking through the 8 metre barrier with the 9.5m Phantom. This top of the range model has been joined in the line-up by a new, cabin version. The Phantom Cabin shares a hull with its open topped sibling, but with a roof over your head it delivers a tough, rugged, all-weather boat with serious cruising credentials. With the option of single or twin outboards up to 600hp in total, Buster claim a top speed of 53 knots for the Phantom Cabin and, with consumption of around 2 litres per NM, the 800 litre fuel tanks should take you just about anywhere you care to go. Silver Fox
Yet more shiny new aluminium was on display on the Silver stand, where they were unveiling a new entry-level boat, the Silver Fox. At 4.95m the new model replaces the previous Silver Fox 485 and is available in two versions; the Fox Avant, with its offset console and transom mounted bench seat, or the Fox BR, with a more traditional bow rider style layout. Engine options for the Avant are either 40 or 50hp, while the BR can also accommodate a 60hp motor. The Silver Fox combines its durable aluminium hull with a GRP liner, which brings a touch of refinement to its otherwise rugged exterior. This was a boat launch without a boat. Instead we were shown images and graphics of the new 11.55 metre model from Finn-Marin, which should materialise in the flesh later in the year. The hardtop, wheelhouse style boat offers two separate cabins, the aft of which can be configured as a double or twin, and will be powered by twin Volvo Penta engines and sterndrives ranging from D4 260 up to D6 350. Nimbus W9
The Nimbus W9, the W stands for weekender, seems to have been a long time coming, but we finally cast our eyes on it here in Helsinki. The W9 is something rather different from Nimbus, without the badges I think you would be hard pushed to identify it as such, but it looks like a boat that will live up to the marques reputation. Available with an inboard or outboard engine, the W9 is a fast, performance orientated day-cruiser style boat that offers overnight accommodation for four, a separate toilet compartment, a cockpit galley and, with the twin stepped hull, speeds of 40+ knots. Nimbus are also planning a W11 model, as well as thee boats in a new ‘Tender “ range, the T8, T9 and T11 and another three in a new ‘Commuter” range, the C8, C9 and C11. Quicksilver 555BR
Quicksilver has launched a new three-model bowrider range, the smallest of which was unveiled at Helsinki. The 555 Bowrider offers a simple, five seat layout in the cockpit, with room for a couple more up front. Engine options will all be from Mercury and range from 60hp up to 100hp. With plenty of space, good storage and, on first glance, good quality fit out and finish, the 555 looks like it will offer a very affordable entry level boat for day cruising or, with the larger engine options, watersports. The 5m boat weighs just 710kg, ex engine, so should be easy to handle and trail without resorting to a big 4x4. INBOX Pigeon problem
I have complete empathy with your reader from last month’s Q&A pages who is having to deal with the old, old problem of bird mess on boat topsides. Our particular problem, a few years ago, was not with seagulls, but with pigeons. They would use our canopied flybridge on our Turbo 36 as a nesting area and, as a consequence, we would find bits of twigs and bird crap littered all over the area whenever we removed the cover. The mess was horrendous, not to mention the smell. They were so brazen with their pursuit of nesting that they didn’t even mind carrying on their rampage whilst we were onboard. We bought a revolving scarer just like the one suggested and all I can say is, it might work for seagulls but it doesn’t work with pigeons. I’ve included an image showing the pigeon resting on our back rail just over a metre away from our new revolving scarer. The picture was taken less than half an hour from when it was erected. Your reader might, however, like to try the ‘homemade bird scarer’ on your letter page in your April 2016 issue of Motorboat Owner, where a jar lid with nails poking through was used to ward off unwelcome feathered visitors. But, I think last month’s reader may need a bigger lid. Janet Whitworth Editor replies: There clearly is no single answer. The home made solution is a cheap and easy method to try, so it has got to be worth a go.

ur current project boat has taken a back seat this month as I move back to our original project, the £1000 boat. Since last seen, the boat has sat idle while we have been concentrating on the Fairline, and apart from an upgrade to her engine from the original 20hp to the rebuilt 35hp motor and some canopy work, nothing else has changed. This year though, I want to embark on an ambitious plan with our little Mayland 16. I won’t go into detail just yet, but suffice it to say that one of the things I needed to tackle was the power unit. My rebuilt 35hp starts
and runs, but I want something newer that I can rely on before planning for my adventure can begin. Late last year I started searching for a new outboard. The financial constraints are off now, so there would be no limit to what I could spend, but realistically this is still a very cheap, old boat so I put a £1,500 limit on myself. When new, in the 1970’s, the Mayland 16 was rated up to 40hp, but in those days the engines were all two-stroke, and even a 40hp motor only weighed around 60-70kg. A modern four-stroke 40hp outboard can weigh in excess of 100kg, so to say I

was a little concerned about the transom strength is an understatement. What would I spend my £1500 budget on? It had to be more than 20hp, as we know that this is simply not enough to maintain the decent cruising speed that I would need for my planned adventure. Then it struck me. Even since they were launched more than 10 years ago, I have been somewhat smitten with the Evinrude E-Tec range of direct injection two-stroke outboards. This would be my opportunity to own one, albeit at the very bottom end of the range. The trouble is that, despite being twostroke, there is little weight advantage over a four-stroke at this end of the spectrum. In fact the 40hp E-Tec weighs as much, or even a tad more, than some 40hp four stroke engines. For that reason I decided to narrow my search for a 30hp example. It needed to be long shaft, of course, and I wanted it to have electric start and battery charging capabilities. Luckily it didn’t take long to find one. The fact that it was 250 miles away in North Yorkshire, necessitating a 500-mile round trip, did not put me off when I negotiated the price down to £1450 from a starting point a little over my budget. The seller was upgrading to a 50hp E-Tec for watersports and promised this 2011 motor was lightly used and in good condition. Upon picking it up, it quickly became apparent, when the seller used a crane to move it around, it was still quite a hefty unit. A check of the specs showed that it weighed in at a fairly heavy 75kg, which was the top end of what the boat would have been rated to weight-wise when new.
The 20hp outboard was not capable of much more than 6 knots. We needed more power

from my friend who happens to live, breathe and sleep fibreglass. We have covered Richard Poat’s boat building exploits in Motorboat Owner before, and he has since mounted a 70hp motor onto a transom that, at one point, didn’t even exist. You can read more about that next month, but this was an opportunity too good to pass up. After a quick preliminary
discussion with Richard, I had a shopping list of items needed, which were waiting for him upon his arrival. I initially expected to have to beef up the transom with wood and all sorts, but Richard assured me that a few layers of 2oz (650g) fibreglass matting would be plenty strong enough to hold this new engine. Here is how he did it.

The process was repeated over the whole transom until we had applied three layers of fibreglass matting everywhere
The newly fibre glassed transom was then left to dry. The cold temperature and damp environment were not ideal conditions for this work, so a fan heater was added
Once dry, we noticed a couple of areas where the matting had failed. These light areas had not adhered to the underlying transom so will need grinding out and redoing
COST £ We used around four metres of 600g fibreglass mat and 2.5kg of resin with an appropriate amount of catalyst. These cost £34.58. To this we added a paddle roller, five paint kettles, five litres of acetone, some stirrers and roller refills for a total cost of £68.32. We have enough consumables left over to make good the repair that is required without further cost.
TIME TAKEN All the work seen here was carried out in around six hours. It was a further couple of days until the fibreglass had completely set, due to the weather, and then we found the problem areas where the fibreglass had failed. This meant that we were unable to complete the job as planned, which included painting and replacing the mounting pad both inside and outside of the transom. This would have been another few hours’ work, which would have turned this into a weekend job, assuming you were fibre glassing in warm dry conditions.
The tatty wooden outboard mount was removed from the transom and will be replaced. The next stage after our remedial repair, will be to paint out the inside of the newly reinforced transom

CUTTING Honda EU22i
Honda has launched a replacement for its best-selling portable inverter generator, the EU20i. The new EU22i offers a 10% increase in output, now a maximum 2200W and a continuous 1800W. It is identical in terms of size, and weighs just 400g more, despite using a new 120cc engine to replace the 100cc motor. The 21.1kg EU22i is said to offer lower fuel consumption, leading to longer runtime per tank, reduced noise levels and better handling of changing load requirements. Suzuki DF325A
Following on from Suzuki’s launch of their flagship 350hp outboard, they are now offering a 325hp version of the same engine. The DF325A is a 4.4 litre, straight six cylinder outboard that, like the DF350A, offers twin counter rotating propellers. Available in XL and XXL shaft lengths, the DF325 weighs in at 330kg or 339kg depending upon model, has a 2.29:1 gear ratio and packs in all of the same technologies found on its larger sibling such as variable valve timing, lean burn, self adjusting timing chain and offset driveshaft. Owners of the older, SeaTalk 1, generation of Raymarine equipment, can now integrate these electronics into a modern network, including wireless networks, thanks to the new SeaTalk to NMEA gateway from Digital Yacht. Sealine 328/330
S
ealine know a thing or two about building a great, spacious sportscruisers, but did you know that you can buy a 30ft plus, twin-engine, twocabin Sealine with space, pace and diesel economy for under £50k? Let us introduce to you the Sealine 328. Sealine’s story began in 1972, when Tom Murrant was looking to buy a small boat. Unable to find anything he liked, he decided to design and build one himself. With mouldings supplied by the boat builder, Midland Marine, the 23 Continental was born. Realising that he
was on to a winner, Murrant decided to market the 23 and started the company, Fibresonic Marine, which later became C-Line. By 1978 the company had moved out of its rented premises and into the ex-Dawncraft factory in Kidderminster, and was producing a range of small boats from 19 to 23ft. That same year the company was renamed Sealine and made its debut at the Southampton Boat Show. In 1985 the Ambassador range launched the company into the larger twin engine sportscruiser market, with the trendsetting 285. Alongside this was its smaller

cruiser range, known as Envoy (later Senator), and a flybridge series, called Statesman. However, with rival British companies finding success in the 30ft plus sportscruiser market, such as Fairline with its sleek Targa 33, it was time for Sealine to get in on the action. The T-topped 40ft 365 Sportsbridge launched in 1988 and was to be the first of a new wave of stylish and curvy larger sportscruisers from Sealine’s collaboration with designer Robert Tucker. A year later the 328 Sovereign was introduced to fill the gap between the soon-to-be-replaced
285 and its sportscruiser flagship, the 365 Sportsbridge. The 34ft 328 offers two separate sleeping cabins and was powered by twin petrol or diesel sterndrives. Like the 365, its curvy superstructure maximises interior space and sports the iconic bowsprit, which is now somewhat symbolic of Sealine’s 20th century ranges. The Sovereign model name was dropped in 1991 and the model was renamed the 328 Ambassador. Finally, in 1992, a year before it ceased production, the 328 became the 330 Ambassador. The 330 was almost identical, but had slight

changes to the helm console and bathing platform. Over the 5-year production, 1989-1993, around 110 328/330 models were built. In the years that followed, the 310 and 360 Ambassador models filled the void, before the launch of the 328’s popular successor, the S34 in 1998. Today Sealine, now owned by German manufacturer, Hanse Yachts, produces an equivalent model, the S330, and this offers a similar two cabin, 6-berth layout. The 328 may be approaching 30 years old, but it still has all the makings of a great coastal boat for a couple or family. The fact that these boats tend to stay with owners for a long time, is a sure sign of this. Such devotion is usually displayed in interior upgrades and in some cases, re-engining. Also, with prices at £39-£50k for a diesel version, the 328 is almost half
the price of its S34 successor. At the time of writing, the Sealine dealer, TBS Boats Penton, had four 328s for sale, so there was no better time to take a closer look. Interior A chunky offset, sliding companionway door and two, fairly shallow wood-topped steps, lead down into the interior saloon area. The wide saloon feels inviting and spacious, and offers headroom of 5ft 10in. It is also quite light owing to the lightcoloured teak joinery. To starboard is a large, and fairly low, U-shaped seating area with a good size, two-pedestal table slotted between. The table can accommodate 4-5 people, 6 using a pouffe that most boats seem to have. An additional wooden insert bolts into the floor and creates a sizeable double

berth, measuring a colossal 6ft 7in in length and 3ft 5in wide. Not bad for an occasional berth. Large lockers under the seating provide ample storage and there is bottle storage between the forward seat backrest and cabin bulkhead. Ensure that the latter is in position, as it has been known to drop down. A long hatch in the saloon reveals a deep hull locker for storage. This space is often used for a holding tank. The rectangular-shaped galley can be found on the port side. The standard white Formica worktop features a two-burner hob and a sink/drainer at right angles, both of which are disguised under hinging sections of worktop, and a relatively large area for food preparation to the right of the sink. Some owners have removed the lifting covers, while upgrading the hob, or swapped the standard enamel-like sink for a practical metal version. There is a decent amount of storage in the galley, with two large, open lockers beyond the worktop, a series of drop-front, eye-level cupboards and a high corner cupboard. A tip here is to check the cabin bulkhead inside the
cupboard, below the porthole, for signs of leaks and movement. Below the worktop is a standard Engel fridge and a large shelved cupboard with cutlery drawer above, these two items sometimes swapped positions. Aft, and set back below the hob, is a gas oven and grill. Look for 240v sockets in the galley as these were unfortunately lacking in standard boats. We recently discovered boat number one for sale and saw that its galley had been converted from gas to all-electric. It now features an electric hob, and below the worktop, a modern Waeco fridge, a microwave oven and a small dishwasher. The forward cabin has an offset double, which is a relatively good size. The shaped 4ft wide berth, which is almost athwartships, is 8ft long at the aft edge and 5ft 6in long forward. The bed itself is formed by two large cushions, which provide easy access to bow hull storage and a bowthruster, if fitted. A topper to flatten the join may have been added for comfort. Next to the bed is a narrow, top-opening mirror dresser unit for storing valuables, and a pull out drawer

underneath. There is also a set of four drawers in the front of the bed base and a full length wardrobe to starboard. There is a space within this wardrobe to store the saloon dinette infill. Open lockers above, and shelving each side of the bed, provide yet more storage.
You enter and step down into the forward cabin via a space-saving sliding door. The door has been known to fall out of its runners, particularly in heavy seas, so be sure to check it, and its surroundings, for damage. With the door shut there is enough room for two people to stand up, with 5ft 11in headroom, although dressing at the same time may prove a little tight. The toilet and shower compartment can be found on the port side. This has a wide entry door from the saloon, and ensuite access from the forward cabin. The moulded compartment has an integral sink unit, with shower mixer tap and a large storage locker inside, a sea toilet and a shower curtain enclosure covering both The toilet compartment has ensuite access to the doors. Immediately inside is an area to stand and dress (5ft 11in headroom) and a small vanity unit with a metal wash basin and cupboard below. Next to this is a 4ft settee, that could easily double as a child’s berth, with storage in its base. More storage is provided by a large unit of lockers, drawers and a wardrobe aft. Stooping further, under the cockpit companionway moulding, you will find

two thwartships bunks with a deep foot well between, which, as you progress to starboard, provides standing headroom of 5ft 11in until it meets the hull. The 2ft wide bunks are a generous length, at 6ft 8in for the forward berth and 6ft 4in for the aft one, and both have seated headroom at the head end. Sealine added an escape door to this cabin, which forms part of the cockpit seat moulding. Overall it is a great cabin for kids, and would also prove comfortable enough for two adults. Most boats will have teak joinery throughout. However, the 1990 boat we viewed had upgraded ‘Bird’s Eye Maple’ veneer fascias as seen on later ‘90s models, which provides a more modern feel. Interiors are either carpeted, or have a teak and holly floor. Be sure to check all the portholes for signs of leaks and damage, as seals can deteriorate and the plastic can scratch and craze.
Cockpit & Helm Stepping aboard, and through the transom door, the cockpit feels spacious and sociable. The deep and wide coamings also bring a feeling of safety. The cockpit offers seating for around a dozen people and is split over two levels. The lower part has U-shaped seating, with a pedestal table to starboard and a corner seat to port. The seat bases also provide ample storage. On the port side there is a manual bilge pump and a gas locker (under the side deck step) housing two Camping Gaz 907 cylinders, while a second fridge, together with battery and fuel shut-off panels, are housed in the forward seat moulding. A small, shallow step leads to the forward section of the cockpit, which is very much geared for being underway. On the port side is an L-shaped lounger and seating area for 3-4 people, with an open backrest aft. To starboard, is the raised

helm position. This has an imposing, twin-bolstered helm seat, with a higher backrest for the helmsman. The helm console is intuitively laid out, with several small, staggered panels of switches and dials. Unfortunately the smaller dash panels are tight for space, so a radar unit and chartplotter, up to 8-inch, are mounted over the companionway in the large, long panel at the very back and out of easy reach. The large pane windscreen provides relatively good seated visibility, although the co-pilot’s view forward may be restricted by the aforementioned panel. There are also two large chart storage areas ahead of the co-pilot. Note that the 330 usually has a curvy moulded white dashboard, where the 328 dash is grey vinyl and more angular. There is 6ft 6in headroom under the cockpit canopy. The original canopy and framework sees the canvas sloping at the rear from the radar arch to the transom, resulting in restricted headroom on the aft seats. Consequently owners may well have added an additional hoop, so that the canopy falls vertically to the transom, to provide more interior volume. This arrangement usually means that the back and side screens can be removed, leaving a bimini top for protection. The forward part of the canopy may also have seen some upgrades. The original was a one-piece pram hood, but many now have opening sides and front screen. At the helm, the under-canopy standing headroom is a little restricted due the slope of the front screen, so this normally has to be open. We think, with adjustments in the framework, this section would be better following the line of the windscreen, or perhaps at a steeper angle, for better standing visibility and

headroom at the helm. The cockpit may well have the traditional, Sealine-characteristic grey and white vinyl. This may look dated, but is of a high quality and may still be serviceable if it has been looked after. For replacement, some owners may have opted for a traditional white vinyl with navy piping, while others may have totally transformed it with a modern, Silvertex style, fabric, as seen on the latest Sealine models. There are a couple of general checks to make in the cockpit. Mild steel screws were used for attaching the upholstery, these will rust in a marine environment. Also inspect the windscreen for leaks. On Deck Getting out onto the decks from the cockpit is easiest on the port side, and there are well-placed grabrails along the radar arch, which are necessary as the stanchions finish at the arch. The moulded decks are a decent size, 7 inches at the sides, expanding to 9-10 inches towards the bow, which makes it easy enough to move about on deck. The 328 has the characteristic Sealine feature of a curved bowsprit. This cocoons the anchor, usually electric, and allows

you to stand either side of the chain and bow roller. Set into the deck behind is a dedicated chain and storage locker. Aft, the shapely bathing platform moulding is self-draining, and equipped with a bathing ladder and dedicated slots for fender storage. A shower and mounts for davits are built into the transom. Getting up onto the side decks from alongside is tricky, as they are fairly high. Owners may have fitted a metal fold-out step on the hull, which is particularly useful when a dinghy is on the davits, leaving the bathing platform unaccessible.
been described as one of the best hulls to be developed by Sealine during the 80s. As standard, 328s were often fitted with separate levers for the gears and throttle, providing four levers in total. These may not have been very popular, but once mastered they do offer precise and controlled handling, with no bursts of power, and in most cases without needing to touch the wheel. look at such aspects, but it is always worth familiarising yourself with every accessible nook and cranny. Inspect the hull thoroughly for impact damage, paying close attention to the bathing platform moulding, which surrounds and protrudes out from the hull sides at the stern. When new, these models sported bi-colour striped decals along the hull and superstructure. These can crack and peel through age. Grey and red usually signify the ‘80s, while blue and turquoise were used during the ‘90s. You may find these have been totally removed for a more modern look. You will find a HIN (Hull Identification Number) to starboard on the lower part of the bathing platform. This can help confirm the boat’s build date and number. This will list the boat model first, in this case 328, then a 3-digit production number, followed by three letters. We understand that the middle letter indicates the build year F is 1989, G is 1990, H 1991 and I 1992. After this, new industry standards were brought in and Sealine changed their HIN numbers to read, for example, GBSIL32881E293, GB for Great Britain, SIL for Sealine, model 328, number 81 manufactured, built in May 1992 with a 1993 model specification. The Sealine Forum is a fantastic resource for this type of information, and more, and has an almost fanatical following.

By 1991, Sealine had added a top option of 230hp Volvo Penta KAD42 engines, which were priced from £96,225. It was also now available with twin 229hp Volvo Penta 501 or 265hp 570 petrols, priced respectively at £79,346 and £81,788 and giving top speeds of 32-34 knots. These, plus the AD41 engine option, continued to be available with the 330 model. Engine access is via a full width, tightfitting, double-folding hatch in the cockpit floor. Access to this usually requires the removal of a pedestal table and carpet, if fitted. The forward section of the hatch is sufficient for access down into the engine bay for day-to-day checks, such as belts, header tanks and fuel filters, which are mounted on the forward bulkhead. Most 328s will be fitted with 200hp AD41s. Engines are accessible by a cockpit double folding hatch
out at regular intervals. Be sure to inspect the two 70-gallon fuel tanks too, as the standard aluminium tanks can suffer from corrosion and leak. Replacement can be tricky, as these are mounted under the aftmost bunk in the mid cabin. Twin AD41s are regarded as reliable engines and will normally be mated to Volvo Penta 290 duo prop drives, both of which have good availability of spares and are easy to work on. The drives will normally be fitted with sets of A4 aluminium or C4 stainless steel duo props. Twin AD41s offered a top speed of 32-33 knots and a fast cruising speed of around 26-27 knots when new, giving fuel economy in the region of 1.5-1.8mpg. An older boat is unlikely to reach the original top speed, as weight will have been added over the years and the engine
won’t be producing quite the same HP as it was when new. Owners confirm that the AD41’s sweet spot is at 3300rpm, delivering 22-23 knots and approximately 1.7-1.8 mpg or 60 litres per hour. Opening the throttle to 3500rpm should give 2526 knots, 70 litres per hour and around 1.6 mpg. Being up to 30 years old, older Volvo engines will often smoke on start up, but this will usually clear quite quickly once warmed up. Perhaps check when the injectors were last replaced/serviced. Be aware AD41 boats are described as being quite slow to plane but, once there, they should be quite responsive to bursts of power. KAD42 engines have the edge here, giving that supercharged burst of power to get up on the plane, but with an intrusive supercharger whine at lower speeds. Re-engining is not uncommon, with several petrol boats re-engined with diesel for improved economy for longer passages and coastal use. At the time of writing we came across a 1989 example, we presume petrol originally, that had been refitted with a pair of 260hp Volvo Penta KAD44s. These engines claim to provide 40 knots, making it a bit of a rocket ship. With the Re-engined ‘89 version fitted with 260hp KAD44s KAD44 using the same engine block as 46

the KAD42, and previous AD41, it is an excellent match, and relatively easy swap. On the used market today, twin diesel versions are priced from £40-£50k, whilst petrol versions are between £29-£34k, with cheaper versions of both available for sale in the Med. It all comes down to budget and usage, coastal or inland, or both. A petrol version will be a cheap purchase, affordable enough to run inland and be a lot of boat for the money, but it won’t have the economy or range for those who do want to go coastal and distance
Conclusion The 328 is a great all rounder, combining reassuring performance and spacious accommodation. Above all it is an ideal size for a family’s first cruising boat, and is affordable to buy and, in diesel form, to run. Look for a well maintained example, always remembering that in boats of this age, engine and drive condition is the most important factor.

Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a YDSA or a IIMS accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

Marex manoeuvres
Q Having been a sailor for
many years, I am a recent convert to motor boating, and my wife and I bought a lovely 2003 Marex 280 Holiday in June, and we’ve been really enjoying it ever since. My only concern is that, even though the Marex is smaller than my last sailing yacht, I’m not finding berthing her easy, probably due to having less “grip” on the water in crosswinds. She has a bow thruster and I’m thinking of installing a stern thruster too, just to make life easier. I read somewhere that a stern thruster should be about 2/3 the power of a bowthruster, as it does not have to work as hard. May I ask if you agree with this? It seems illogical to me. As the aft end of the vessel is deeper in the water and weighs more, I would have thought that a stern thruster would work harder than one at the bow. Is there a flaw in my logic? Finally, would you have any recommendation regarding a supplier in the Essex area?
A I agree that it does sound illogical, but with a stern thruster usually mounted closer to the pivot point of the boat, and the fact that the aft end of the boat is usually less affected by windage, many thruster suppliers do suggest using a smaller model than that fitted to the bow. Of course, there are always exceptions to this, so fitting a similar sized unit to the stern would be the option least likely to leave you disappointed. Single shaftdrive motorboats can be a bit of a handful at close quarters, mainly because of a lack of initial steerage in reverse, but the lighter, shallower bow than you are used to with a sailing boat will also be causing you problems. This can be mastered with a bit of patience, and possibly some guidance from an instructor experienced in the intricacies of a single shaftdrive motorboat, but a stern thruster would certainly give you the extra control you seek. With regard to suppliers, I have heard good reviews of Fox’s Marina and Boatyard in Ipswich, which is only a short and rather pleasant cruise from Essex. 50

F36 Holding tank
Q I have just bought a Sealine
F36 and am having trouble understanding the holding tank system. There is a button on the control panel for a pump out, but when I press it nothing seems to happen. The lights on the panel tell me when the tank is full. Under the floor there is a large manual bilge pump, connected to a seacock. If I pump this it seems to empty the holding tank, as the ‘full’ lights on the panel go out. So far, I haven’t actually found the tank. Do you know where it might be?
A If the tank was a factory install, it should be located under the forward end
of the inboard berth in the mid cabin. You will also find the hot water calorifier under here too. Lift the mattress and you may have to unscrew the locker lining below to gain access into the bilge area. Once you can see it, it should be obvious if there is an electric pump fitted, but I suspect that there isn’t one. The control panels are standard and even boats made without holding tanks would still have had the button and holding tank lights. The manual pump may be a little harder to use, but it is a nice, simple and, I suspect, trouble free way of emptying the tank. You only have to deal with one non-operational pump-out pump to realise the importance of simplicity and reliability in this area!

Sterndrive economy
Q In my search for a boat I keep being drawn to
vessels with outdrives, but the more I hear, and the more I read on the internet, the more I am inclined to avoid them. Are they really as unreliable and expensive to maintain as I hear?
A This question pops up as regular as clockwork, and there really is no easy
answer. Sterndrives do need careful and regular maintenance, and will suffer if that is scrimped on. The cost of the maintenance is similar to having another engine serviced, if paying an engineer to do it, but is actually very affordable if you do it yourself. The key is to keep up with the service schedules, use quality consumables and, if you find water in the oil, investigate and fix the problem. Do this, and I believe that drives do provide good, reliable service, and you will be rewarded with improved fuel economy over an equivalent shaft-driven boat, which should help offset the extra cost in maintaining them.
Changing a boat name
Q My boat is on the small ships register and I
want to change its name. What is the procedure?
A I am going to gloss over the superstitions and rituals around this and
concentrate on the practicalities. If you want to waste good champagne and be seen to dance around your boat naked at midnight, there is plenty online about exactly what you need to do. Firstly, to change the name on the SSR, you can simply fill in a form online. Go to the MCA website and choose option 3 ‘Change of vessel detail’. This will allow you to keep the same SSR number. Next you should inform your insurance company and your marina/boatyard. Don’t forget to also update your radio licence, which again can be done online at the Ofcom website and, if you have registered on the scheme, update your CG66 details on the CG66 section of the MCA website. Lastly simply remove the old name and apply the new one. Old vinyl names may need some gentle heat from a hairdryer or suchlike to aid removal. 52

Q I am looking to spend around £20,000 on
a boat that I can moor on the coast and use for day fishing trips with my mates, as well as short cruises, possibly overnight, with my family. I don’t envisage travelling too far for either purpose, so speed is not too important. What boats should I be looking at?

A While you and your mates will probably
put up with all sorts for a spot of fishing, the Beneteau Antares 650 safety and comfort of your family I would see as paramount in your choice. If they don’t enjoy going boating, you have lost one of the best parts of owning a boat. On that basis I am going to suggest a comfortable and sturdy cruiser, with accommodation for a family, first and foremost, but one that will also accommodate two or more fisherman. I’ve steered clear of fast sportscruisers, as I get the feeling that is not what you are looking for. Having said that, there is an abundance of choice here and the two that caught my eye were this little diesel Sealine S24, and this rather nice Hardy Seawings 254. Instead I have stuck with solid, practical, sturdy boats that should offer everything you need, including a good aft cockpit for fishing. You mentioned overnight and family, but don’t say how many berths you need. This Seaward 23 would be a great buy, but only has two berths, which may not be enough. On a similar vein, a Channel Islands 22, like this one, would also do the job, with plenty of money left in the kitty too. If you need the extra room for little ones, this Cheverton 27 I think would do everything you want, and more. It’s got great, comfortable accommodation and facilities, and a nice large, deep and spacious cockpit. If these are the sort of boats that you are looking for, then Hardy is another make to hunt out. This rare 335S looks to be a lot of boat for the money or, more commonly found, the Hardy 25 would also fit the bill. If you fancy something somewhere in between a sportscruiser and the more traditional, slower boats above, then maybe a sportsfisher would be a good choice, albeit erring more towards the fishing requirements. This little Jeanneau Merry Fisher 645 should do all that you require, although it is a little over budget, and this Beneteau Antares 650 might be worth a closer look. Engines down on power
Q My boat seems to be a bit down on power and, having
discounted the usual problems such as fouling, fuel and air filters and valve clearances, I am wondering if the turbo might not be working correctly. Do turbos need servicing or, at nearly 20 years old, is it likely to need replacing?
A Turbos do certainly wear and, at 20 years, there is a possibility that yours
is not producing the boost that it once did. It’s a shame that so few boats are fitted with boost gauges, as this would give you a positive indication of a poorly performing turbo. If you have your boat serviced by a dealer, I would ask them to check the boost levels before embarking on an expensive replacement. Alternatively, you could go for an overhaul. After 20 years, I am sure even if the turbo is not your main problem, it will benefit from being looked at, and there are quite a few outfits around the country offering this service. Just put turbo reconditioning into a search engine on the Internet and find one local to you. If this doesn’t solve the problem, you may need to look further into the fuel system, particularly the injectors or even the injection pump.
Scattering ashes at sea, any rules?
Q Are there any rules about scattering of ashes at sea?
I know that burials at sea are strictly controlled, but how about ashes? Is there a ‘pollution’ issue or anything else we could fall foul of. My father recently passed away and loved being out on the boat with us, so it feels like a fitting thing to do.
A Rules regarding the scattering of ashes in the UK are almost non-existent. If
doing so on land, you should seek the landowner’s permission and if doing so on controlled inland waterways, the environment agency has some ‘advice’ in their leaflet. If, however you want to scatter your father’s ashes at sea, there are no rules to follow. Just pick a calm, windless day and scatter them as close to the water as you can. For anyone that loves boats and the sea, I can’t think of a nicer way to be honoured. 54

he sight of the dramatic chalk cliffs of the Sussex coastline is one that many of us relish as we pass by at speed, in fair or foul weather. Then, of course, there is the red and white markings of the Beachy Head lighthouse, again a beautiful and lonely landmark on
a sometimes long and arduous passage. Just round the corner, to the east, is the seaside resort of Eastbourne. Beautifully ornate and imposing, multi-storey homes flank the beachfront, and a decorative pier, dating back to 1866, reaches out 1000ft into the English Channel.

Eastbourne’s habitation dates back to the stone age and, nestled into the landscape, there are many historical monuments, such as Martello Towers and hidden fortresses. However, like many towns along this part of the coast, the arrival of a steam railway transformed it into a Victorian seaside resort, which today offers decorated theatres, galleries, plentiful shops and restaurants, and family attractions. Three miles to the north east of the town lies Sovereign Harbour, an artificial
harbour and waterfront development enclosing an 800-berth marina. The marina, operated by Premier Marinas, boasts 24 hour access via a twin lock system, ample space for visitors, great facilities and a convenient waterfront complex of shops and restaurants. The bright lights and attractions of Eastbourne are also easily accessible. The harbour was originally built into the shingle beach during the early ‘90s, when tonnes of sandstone and chalk was excavated to create the outer and inner harbour seen

a ‘Florida feel’ about them. Fishing is an important industry in the harbour, with hauls that include crab, supplying local restaurants, as well as many further afield. Destination can buy, learn about and eat the freshly caught bounty. At 23 miles east of Brighton, and 51 miles west of Dover, Sovereign is a useful sheltered haven for a stopover and all season base for coastal and cross-Channel exploration. Rain or shine, there is bound to be something to keep every crew member happy. Approaches The harbour is sheltered in all wind directions. However, the entrance becomes exposed in strong south easterlies, particularly on the ebb and flood when currents are at their strongest, 1½ hours before and after high water. The shipping lanes for the Dover Strait lie 12 nautical miles off Eastbourne and will need to be negotiated at 90 degrees if you are crossing the Channel to the French Normandy coast. The approaches are straight forward with a sectored light at night, but be careful not to stray north
Sovereign Lighthouse lying 6 miles offshore and the tidal currents over the Royal Sovereign Shoal. Those travelling along the coast from the east need to consider the firing ranges south west of Dungeness, while those approaching from the west need to take into account the strong tidal streams, and look out for fishing markers, off Beachy Head. A Martello Tower, to the south of the entrance at Langney Point, helps indentify the entrance and is lit at night. The first buoy to look out for on your approach is the safe water mark. Visitors and berth holders are advised to contact the marina on VHF channel 17, call sign ‘Sovereign Harbour’, on arrival at this mark, for locking-in instructions. You can also call the Marina Reception on 01323 470099. Note that inbound locks close on the hour and every half hour, so you can time your approach or monitor traffic and timings on VHF prior. Also note that there is no
free flow at Sovereign, as the tide range is too quick. To the north of the entrance channel lies the wreck of the World War II British cargo ship, the SS Barn Hill. The eastern end of the wreck is marked by a yellow special mark, and the channel skirts close to the south of it, marked by two starboard channel markers. When the tide is low its three remaining boilers are exposed, rising 3 metres above chart datum. The five thousand tonne SS Barn Hill was bombed in 1940 at Beachy Head and, on fire, drifted past Eastbourne before sinking in its position today. If you are approaching day or night, a sectored light, a white beacon on the promenade, provides a leading line for the entrance channel, bearing 259º, from the safe water mark. Food supplies The two large locks have floating pontoons each side and are operational 24 hours a day
lit breakwaters you will find the outer harbour to be very sheltered. The speed limit in the outer harbour and approaches is 5 knots. Be aware the channel is prone to shoaling and silting after storms. Consequently the buoyed channel is dredged annually, between March and June, to 2.4 metres below chart datum. If you are approaching over the low water period, particularly on spring tides, keep well inside the channel, where possible, as the two starboard markers, just inside the north arm, are usually in shallow water, with the most eastern of these drying out on a low spring. Ahead, a pier head juts out into the harbour and, as you round this following the buoyed channel, the two locks, which are flanked by high rise buildings to the right, will come into view. Each lock has a set of traffic lights and you will need to monitor VHF channel 17 for further information. Each lock is 50 metres in length
There is a large Asda superstore in the retail area to the west of the harbour and this is open Mon 7am12pm, Tues-Fri 6am-12pm, Sat 6am10pm and Sun 10am-4pm. There is also a Tesco Extra 2.2 miles away.
Where to fill up
A self-service fuel pontoon lies immediately to starboard, just inside the lock gates, pictured. Petrol and diesel are available daily from here between 8am- 8pm. Contact the Marina Reception prior to fuelling and, once fuelled, visit the overlooking reception/lock control building to pay. The high pontoon has two diesel and two petrol pumps. A faster and larger diesel hose is at the far end. Its tank holds 90,000 litres of diesel.

and 10 metres wide, and capable of accommodating numerous boats. The locks have a rise and fall of about six metres, and a cycle time of around 30 minutes. It is advisable to prepare fenders and lines on both sides on your final approach. Be aware you won’t be able to see what is inside the locks until you are right on top of them, particularly with the starboard lock. You will normally find yourself sharing a lock with a well-versed local fishing boat or two, large and small. These boats are based on a dedicated quay in the West Harbour, with some also in the North Harbour. Floating pontoons both sides (at gunwale height for most motorboats) make it easy, and the well-spaced cleats have pick up lines and running lines between for smaller, low freeboard boats. On busy weekends during the high season, the marina will operate a lock stacking system to help deal with any inbound queues. Here a member of the marina staff stands on the lock pierhead with a load hailer and VHF, directing and stacking boats into the locks according to
size. When lock stacking is taking place, a green-white-green traffic light will be shown, so always ensure you are listening out on VHF channel 17 for further instructions. At such times you may wait one, two or three at most, lock cycles. Waiting and milling in the channel can be tricky at low water, and you will also need to be aware of any outbound traffic. Once inside the lock, at busy times you will be asked to move as far up as possible and raft if necessary. Larger motorboats may want to use a spring line to counteract the current surges, particularly at low water. Once through the lock be aware there is a speed limit of 3 knots in all of the inner harbours. Where to moor A member of the marina staff will normally greet you inside the lock and provide instructions, verbal and printed, to your allocated berth. Visitors are normally directed to berths on A, B and C, which are the finger pontoons immediately to port inside the lock, or the long alongside pontoon D,

Soak up the marina atmosphere. There’s a great choice of eateries and cafés at The Waterfront
seen to starboard beyond the fuel berth. Smaller visitors may also be directed into vacant finger berths on the north side of D pontoon. Should you be directed into one of the other harbours, you will need to pass through one of the bridges. Inbound and outbound bridge lifts can be requested on VHF channel 17. Again these have lights next to them to control the traffic. Visitor berthing is charged at £3.10 per metre per day. The main, large, coded toilet, shower and laundry block is on the east bank of the Inner Harbour, close to the fuel berth and D pontoon. There are another two smaller blocks in the West and North Harbour. There are also public toilets next to the Boatyard and The Waterfront complex. Be aware, if you are looking to wash down the decks or top up your water tank, we would recommend carrying your own hose, as not all of the pontoons are equipped with hose reels.
Marine services and supplies are in the large Premier Marinas Boatyard facility, the Boat Shed, next to The Waterfront. Here you will find the Boatyard Reception, which offers hard standing and a 50-tonne travel hoist. The small Sovereign Harbour Chandlery (01323 478080) stocks most marine essentials. Chandlery owner, Tim Nicholls can order items in if necessary and also offers services including maintenance, GRP repairs and modifications, bow and stern thrusters, polishing, and vinyl names and decals. Eurotek Marine (01323 479144) is the on-site marine electronics specialist. Next door, Tate Marine (01323 471600) can also help with marine repairs and installations. There is currently no engine spares and services on site, but there are local engineers that serve the marina, including Volvo Penta engineer Nathan Crewe at Crewe Marine. Ask at the Marina or Boatyard Reception for more contacts. Peter Leonard Marine (01273 515987) at Newhaven is a useful engine agent and spares stockist (inc Volvo, Mercruiser). Sea Screw (01323 430294) is another chandlery and online suppler in Eastbourne. Autolec (01323 720998) can order in car-equivalent spares and service items. There is also a Halfords Autocentre (01323 638730) and retail store (01323 500555) nearby. Replacement gas and a pump out facility (on fuel pontoon) are available via the Marina Reception.

Where to eat and drink You really don’t need to wander far for a drink and a bite to eat at Sovereign Harbour, as the area known as ‘The Waterfront’ sees a real collection of waterside eateries, bars and cafes with outside seating, congregating in a two storey complex in the top, north west corner of the Inner Harbour. One of the most popular here is the affordably-priced Mediterranean restaurant, Pablos (01323 470400). This offers pizzas, pasta, meats and seafood dishes, and has a steak night on a Tuesday for £11.95 per person. If you are craving a curry, The Ganges restaurant on the upper level is our firm favourite. The slightly pricier Thai restaurant, Thai Marina (01323) 470414), is also very popular with boaters and residents alike. The Harbour Grill restaurant (01323 478151) is a must for the meat lover, and also offers a takeaway service. We can recommend its enormous chicken shish kebabs or fish and chips. The Garden Bar
at the Waterfront is a popular place to start an evening and has pool, darts and live entertainment on a Saturday night. The Sovereign Harbour Yacht Club (01323 470888) welcomes visiting boaters to its elevated, marina view bar and Latitude 50 restaurant. It offers a great, pub-style menu and is open for lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday, and for Sunday lunches. If you are looking for breakfast, a Full English or something healthier, head to Dilieto’s Coffee Lounge, and it offers takeaways too. Finally the waterfront Harvester is a good choice for families, and is also open for breakfast. Restaurant recommendations in Eastbourne include the Belgian Café (01323 729967, with its 34 varieties of mussel pot dishes and varieties of Belgian beer, The Beach Deck (01323 720320) next to Treasure Island, Old Daves Gourmet Burger Co, the Tea Chalet and the dogfriendly Pilot Inn pub at the Holywell end of the seafront. Places to see and visit With Eastbourne Pier and the bustling town centre just under 3 miles away, it would be rude not to pay it a visit. On a sunny summers day, this represents a lovely 55-minute walk along the seafront path, or an 18-minute bike ride (road and path). By far the easiest way into town is by bus. The regular number 99, or Loop bus, will take you to the town centre from the stop on the main road (A259), close to the Asda supermarket. A more scenic and tourist route is by taking the Dotto Train. This popular road train goes from Atlantic Drive in the South Harbour, along the seafront as far as Holywell. This is £2 a ride (£1 for children) or £5 for a hop-on hop-off day ticket. Another good place to catch it from is the Sovereign Centre, which is a sports centre with an indoor swimming pool. The less frequent, hourly bus number 5 goes from Macquarie Quay in the North Harbour, and the 5A from Daytona Quay, South Harbour, take 20-40 minutes to get into the town centre.
Be advised that there is no slipway at the marina. Those wishing to tow a trailboat to Sovereign Harbour for events such as Airbourne, will need to make arrangements with the Marina Reception and Boatyard for a launch, berthing and trailer storage. The nearest full-service slipways are at Rye or Newhaven.

Brighton Marina is the next, easy access, all-tides marina to the west along the coast and provides visitor berthing, fuel, retail and restaurant opportunities, as well as transport options into the Victorian resort centre. Further west is the tidal harbour of Littlehampton and all of the marinas in the Solent. To the east is the drying harbour of Rye and the all-tides marinas at Dover and Ramsgate. Cross-Channel ports on the French coast, such as Dieppe, are a 68-mile passage from Eastbourne, across the shipping lanes. Some Napoleonic history nestled into Eastbourne’s beachfront. The Redoubt Fortress is a must visit
A great way to discover the sights of Eastbourne, the high cliffs at Beachy Head and the spectacular South Downs Way is by open top bus. The bus, which has historical commentary, runs every half an hour from Eastbourne Pier, with stops at the Bandstand, Belle Tout, Beachy Head and Birling Gap. A ticket, lasting 24 hours, for an adult is £10, under 16s £5, seniors £7.50 and a family ticket is £25. In the town centre you will also find an excellent choice of restaurants, museums, galleries and theatres. Eastbourne’s newest gallery, the Towner, offers free entry to most exhibits, and the 19th century Royal Hippodrome by the pier, with its newly Visit Eastbourne
Music on the seafront. The Bandstand has a fantastic line up of music, including tribute acts
restored façade, usually has shows and various acts throughout the year. If you are a music lover, it is well worth checking out the programme for Eastbourne’s Bandstand, as there are usually some fantastic concerts and tribute acts playing. The town is also sure to satisfy most shopping addicts, with a pedestrianised high street shopping precinct near Terminus Road, and the large Arndale Shopping Centre a few roads back from the pier. There is also a weekly street market held along Terminus Road every Wednesday. Built to defend against Napoleonic attack, and used as a garrison during World Wars I and II, the 200-year old Redoubt Fortress is a unique and disguised attraction on Eastbourne’s seafront. It is free to enter the parade ground and gun platform, while admission to the fortress itself is £4.50 for adults, £3.25 for concessions and children are £2.50. A family ticket is £12. Further along the seafront is the pirate-themed adventure park, Treasure Island, which has indoor and outdoor play areas, a café, crazy golf and paddling pools, all great for young families. The marina is great for walking around, and has easy access to the gravel and

Destination paved coastal paths, leading north to Pevensey and south towards Eastbourne. Despite there not being much grass around, it is also excellent for walking those canine crew members too. The beach may be shingle and steep in places, but it will almost certainly keep a young family occupied in warm sunshine. You needn’t stroll far for a spot of shopping either. TK Maxx, Matalan, Wilko, Next and Asda are a few of the large stores in the retail area just yards from the marina. On those rainy days there is also the sixscreen Cineworld Eastbourne cinema in the retail area. You will see that there are tours of the harbour aboard a bluehulled trip boat. If you have a tender its worthwhile having a ‘mooch’ around the harbour and ‘limbo’ under the bridges. If you are based at the marina for a couple of days or more, the anchorage at Cuckmere Haven, to the west of Beachy Head, is a lovely spot on a sunny settled day. Here a river meanders through a wide valley to a shingle beach, pictured below. It is also accessible by bus number 12 to Brighton from Eastbourne Town Centre Terminus. You can also take a ride out to the Sovereign Lighthouse, which lies six miles off the coast. This distinctive ‘chair-like’ structure, built in 1971, has a flat, upper deck area, with a heli pad and lighthouse tower in one corner on top.

A big event on the boating calendar at Sovereign is the four-day Eastbourne air show, Airbourne, which is held every August. With an exclusion zone in place out from the seafront, in good weather many boaters anchor off the pier to watch. With most of the action taking place over the water, near the pier, you certainly get the best view from here. Each year over the Christmas period, resident berth holders take part in what is known as Sovereign Shines. For this, boats and waterside residences are decorated with lights to win prizes, in aid of the RNLI. It is quite a spectacle. Back in the last century, wow that makes me feel old, when I was undertaking my day skipper and Yachtmaster theory exams, there was a little book that I found invaluable, The Skippers Pocketbook. Now in its third edition, I still find the book to be a useful companion and a compact aide memoir to all those theoretical bits that I actually seem to so rarely do these days. I know with modern electronics, the requirement to undertake a running fix is almost obsolete, but if asked to do one, as I was in my YM practical exam way back, it is good to know that I have a source of info that, while not comprehensive in every detail, contains enough information to jog the grey matter and help me get the job done. It contains all of the useful lights sounds and shapes, as well as instructions to work out tidal heights, position fixing, course to steer etc etc. There is also some really useful general information on meteorology, seamanship, knots and basic maintenance. In short, I would say it’s what the Americans would call ‘Cliff Notes’ for the RYA theory student, and it’s the next best thing to having an instructor onboard. Even if you are not undertaking a course, the Skipper’s Pocketbook, even in this digital age, is a must for anyone new to boating or Motorboat Owner looking to refresh their theoretical skills. Pre and post start-up checks
I
f the marketing is to be believed, boating is all about jumping onboard, turning the key and shooting off on a sun kissed adventure dressed in little more than a pair of shorts and designer sunglasses. Anyone with a boat knows this is rarely the reality, and it starts the moment you board. We might be used to jumping in the car and departing without a thought, but boats are a little different. Not only are their systems a bit more reliant on user input, but if something does go awry, you cannot simply pull over to the side of the road and call the AA. It is sensible, therefore, to run through some
simple checks before you start the engines and untie the warps. I’m not suggesting that we should adhere to an airline type of checklist, this is supposed to be fun after all, but there are a few things that should be mentally ticked off and physically checked before every trip. Doing this will reduce the chances of a problem, and I guarantee will increase the enjoyment of your boat when out on the water. There is nothing worse than worrying about some aspect that you could have put your mind at rest about, before departing. The following is a list of all the things you could be thinking about. You

don’t have to do all of them, every time, some of them won’t even be relevant to you, but fine tune the list to your specific boat and style of boating and you will soon have a mental checklist that you can carry out in just a few minutes when you arrive. Do it right and methodically, and it should
take no longer than loading the fridge with beer and food for the coming trip. Checks can be divided into two categories, those to carry out before you start the engines, and those to check once the engines are running and before you cast off. We’ll start with the former.

One check can be carried out before you even leave home for the boat. What’s the latest forecast, and is it safe for the planned trip
First thing to check when on the boat are the bilges. Are they dry? Also have a good sniff to ensure there are no gas of fuel odours If you have them, and close them when you leave the boat, open the engine cooling water seacocks

3 If you smell gas or fuel, stop, get off the boat and get it investigated. If all is clear, check that the fuel is turned on 5
Now you should run through some basic engine checks, starting with making sure that the oil level is correct on the dipstick

If your engine/s have a fresh-water cooling system, check that the level in the header tank is between the minimum and maximum

Turn the boat’s batteries on, not forgetting any switches that control systems such as a bow thruster or anchor winch
Check the other fire extinguishers onboard are all in position and showing a good charge on their gauges 17
Ensure that all portholes, hatches and windows are closed. It’s surprising how much water can get in if one is left open
18 Stow all loose items, equipment and personal possessions. Even a short trip around the bay can encounter wake or other unexpected conditions

Remove the shorepower lead. We have all done it, or at least come very close, but motoring off your berth with the lead attached is not a good start to any trip
On a petrol boat, you should run the bilge blowers for a few minutes before starting, even if you can’t smell fumes
21 Brief your crew. This doesn’t need to be formal, just make sure that they are comfortable, have all the safety kit they need and know how to access and operate it, know what to do, and what not to do, while underway and, most importantly, communicate any concerns they may have at any time 22 If you have a sterndrive or outboard boat, check over the transom to make sure there is nothing fouling the propeller, or anyone in the water

Once the engines are running check the helm gauges all read as they should. Oil pressure should rise to the normal position straight away and volts should be around 14V

3 Check the fuel gauge. Do you have enough for the trip, including a healthy reserve. If not, make the fuel berth your first port of call

2 If you have any way of checking, make sure that coolant is running through the engine. A tell tale or a transparent raw water strainer cap will give you the answer
Check operation of systems such as any thrusters, trim or trim tabs
Check that you have drive in both directions by nudging the throttle into gear in both forward and reverse. Do not apply any additional power
6 Check electronics are all operational. Carry out a radio check with the marina if in any doubt, especially if any work has been carried out since your last trip Check the operation of your navigation lights and horn. You may not plan on being out in fog, or after dark, but things don’t always go according to plan

If the boat has one, check the operation of the kill switch by pulling it off while the engine is running
9 Lastly, continue to monitor gauges and keep a close eye on the engine temperature as it starts to rise, usually after departing your berth
There are a few other mental checks to carry out such as, is my safety equipment such as lifejackets and liferaft in good order, in service and ready to use? Do I have enough lifejackets onboard for everyone? Is there enough food and drink onboard for the planned trip? Do I have enough warm clothing and the right clothing for everyone for any weather we may encounter?
Do I have anyone onboard with medical requirements, and are they carrying enough medicine for the trip? Is my spare parts locker fully stocked, and have I replaced anything recently used? Do I have the basic tools onboard to carry out running repairs, if required? Most of these will be a simple tick in the box for a regular boater, as will much of the checklists above, but running through a checklist is good practice and soon becomes second nature and is all part of good seamanship and being prepared.

ith such a plethora of choices in compact open day boats, we have never had it so good at this end of the market. The problem this brings, certainly for the newcomer, is knowing where to begin. It’s a question I am often asked when I’m at boat shows or generally circulating amongst the boat owning public. Given a budget of X, and a requirement for Y, what boat should I buy? When it comes to small, trailable, open boats, you would find it hard to go wrong if you looked at the Finnish market. I do so regularly, which is why so many of their boats make it into these pages. Bella, Flipper, Aquador, AMT, Axopar, Terhi, Yamarin, Finnmaster, the list and choice is endless, and that’s before we get to their aluminium offerings.
The Finn-Marin stable produce the excellent Husky range of aluminium boats, as well as the Grandezza range of cruisers from 25ft up to 40ft, but it is the Finnmaster lineup of cabin, day cruiser, bow rider and console models that we are perhaps most familiar with. It is the flagship of the console range that we are testing today, a 21ft boat that promises smart

The helm is well protected behind a tall windscreen
design solutions, practical features, generous space and good driving dynamics. Does it live up to the hard won reputation that Scandinavian boats hold? You can board the S6 easily from the side, but a deep cockpit, might just catch you out as you step down into the boat. The easier option is to board from the stern where a two-part bathing platform, either side of the outboard, offers a more progressive descent, whichever side the boat is moored to. Port side access requires either stepping across behind the engine or, if the watersports tower has been added, stepping over the transom seat. watersports tower, if fitted, delivers a very good handrail to aid the way safely into the boat. The starboard bathing platform also houses the boat’s bathing ladder. On both sides of the engine there is a large wet locker that drains into the outboard well and is a perfect place to keep mooring

lines, or towing ropes. You might be able to squeeze a fender or two in here as well. Inside the cockpit, and along the transom, is an almost full width seat, big enough for three, or even four at a push. The base of this seat lifts up, and is held open with gas struts, to reveal a very large and orderly locker. Mounted on the underside of the seat are the boat’s steaming light pole and cockpit table leg. On the port side you have a manual bilge pump and a locker lid that provides access to the bilge where the engine hydraulic trim pump is located. In the middle of this locker is a storage well that neatly fits the cockpit table, and on the port side you have the boat’s single battery and main switch and breaker panel. Just in front of the transom seat you find a pair of bucket seats for the helm

and navigator. These spin around to face the transom and, with the cockpit table set up in-between, provide a nice sociable area for up to six people when at anchor or moored. Facing forwards the seats are adjustable, supportive and have lifting bolsters for a choice of driving and crewing positions. The helm console is offset to starboard, with the helm itself on the port side of the console. This gives the skipper an almost central driving position, for a centre console style helming experience. The console is behind a large and tall screen, which provides very good protection from any wind and spray coming from directly ahead. The screen itself is topped with a sturdy stainless steel rail around its whole perimeter to provide plenty of grabrails and steadying opportunities. out, with space for a large multi-function display right in front of the helm, a central panel for engine instrumentation and some switch gear and controls either side of the steering wheel. In front of the nav seat there is a cup holder, small open storage area and a lockable glove box with

a generous amount of storage inside. I have been onboard two of these boats, neither of which were fitted with a VHF radio or compass but there does appear to be options for mounting these if needed. Low down there is an angled moulding for bracing your feet against and above this, in front of the navigator’s position, you can opt for a small drawer refrigerator. With the helm console offset, you get a wide walkway on the port side to move forward. I mentioned earlier that the cockpit sole was low when boarding over the side from the pontoon and this is where you get the benefit of that. The tall cockpit coamings, topped with short stainless steel grabrails provide a real sense

of security as you make your way towards the bow. This would be a particularly good feature if you had young children onboard. Up in the bow, directly in front of the helm, is a two person forward facing bench seat. Behind this, an optional helm canopy stows against the bottom of the windscreen, with the framework neatly folded along the bottom of the windscreen sides, ready to deploy when needed. The

The Yamaha F150 is the largest engine option, but is worth paying extra for

The rest of the bow is taken up with another small, rear facing, seat, which can be infilled to create a sunpad, some moulded storage for four fenders, and a step up onto a small foredeck. Here, boarding over the bow is made easier by a gap in the pulpit rail, two raised sections that offer good handholds and the option of a bow ladder. This small foredeck, teak laid, as was the cockpit and bathing platforms on our test boat, lifts up to access a shallow anchor locker below, which due to its open back can also be accessed with the hatch down. bow you will find a pair of Finnmaster’s trademark stylish docking lights. Underway Our test S6 was fitted with the largest of the two engine options, the Yamaha F150. Looking at the price list, there is only a saving of around £1,400 to be had for going for the standard F130 motor so, if you are on a tight budget, I would try and make the savings elsewhere on the options list as the F150 really is ideally matched to the boat. Acceleration and mid range pick-up was good, with the S6 planing in just 4.5 seconds from a standing start and reaching 20 knots in 8 seconds, 30 knots in 12 seconds and 35 knots in 15 seconds. With a top speed well in excess

of 40 knots, it is not exactly sedate either. Our test conditions were actually a bit nasty. We found shelter close inshore for our speed trials, but heading offshore into the rougher stuff and we were pleasantly surprised just how capable this little boat is. With swells up to a metre we could not keep going flat out, of course, but with use of the throttle and trim we could maintain a comfortable 25 knots into the sea, and almost 35 knots with it behind us without any slamming or undue discomfort. Interestingly, the boat seemed to handle a head sea just a little better with the engine trimmed slightly out, which is contrary to what we normally expect. When manoeuvring at speed, the S6 handled precisely and predictably, with little loss of grip and enough torque from the F150 to keep speeds up in the tightest of turns. Another interesting aspect is that, despite the offset nature of the helm and the crew, the boat felt nicely balanced when on the water. There is a danger that a boat of this style may be inclined to fall onto the heavier side chine, but that simply wasn’t the case. We did need to use the trim tabs to counter any beam-on wind, so I think

these would be a good option to tick, but other than that the S6 is vice free. The helming position is commanding, the seats comfortable and supportive. The huge screen does a great job of protecting the helm and, despite the lack of windscreen wipers, visibility never seemed compromised by spray. With the navigator sitting on the starboard gunwale, this seat could be exposed to spray if the wind is coming from the starboard bow, but other than that the screen protection also extends nicely to your first crew member. The transom seat, as is often the case, will get a bit of spray, and the port-most seat is

exposed to the wind, as it is not behind the helm console. If you really want the windin-the-hair experience, the forward facing seat in front of the helm is actually a very comfortable place to travel. Conclusion The S6 offers a very simple recipe and is a nicely designed boat with a deep, safe cockpit, comfortable seating for up to eight and a very practical and sociable layout. It also has the power, at least with the F150, to deliver a fun and exhilarating drive. It’s true that when the going gets rough you do need to actively drive the boat, using the throttle to maintain a comfortable ride, but even in F5 conditions I was still able

Antifouling Guide

P ainting the bottom of your boat with
antifouling is an annual job that no boat owner, trailboaters aside, can avoid. It’s not the most enjoyable aspect of boat ownership, but it is a relatively simple job and one that usually, at least, marks the start of a new boating season. So does the act of painting really need a step-by-step feature? It is, after all, just painting. For many of us the answer is probably no, but for a newcomer, who perhaps has never had to antifoul a boat before, the process may seem a 1

little daunting. Fear not, our step by step guide will provide the newcomer with everything they need know to undertake their first antifoul, and hopefully there be will be one or two tips for the old hands as well. First published June 2014, updated February 2018
Choosing your paint The market is full of different brands of antifoul paint, and each brand often has many different products. Choosing the right one can be a bit of a minefield. One good tip is to ask other boaters in your marina or club what they are using, and how they have found it. If they have been in the area for a few years, the chances are they will recommend a good paint based on their own trial and error. One thing to note though is that not all paints are suitable for fast boats. Some soft antifoul will wear away too quickly if used on a motorboat, so check the specifications, which often mentions a maximum speed the paint is suitable for. If you are on a drying mooring, check also that the paint is recommended for this
kind of use. Cost is another factor, but this should only be considered after performance and suitability. It could be a false economy buying the cheapest paint if it simply doesn’t work well for your area or your type of boating. This time I chose Seajet 031 Samurai, as it is a paint I have used before and been pleased with the results. Another paint that has worked well for me is International’s Cruiser Uno.
Sterngear and other underwater fixtures Sterndrives, being aluminium, cannot be coated with copper based paint due to the risk of galvanic corrosion. This means that many hull paints are unsuitable for drives. Some paints can be used on both the hull and drives, but check thoroughly before application. I use International’s Trilux 33 on aluminium drives with good results. P brackets and rudders can usually be painted with the same paint as the hull, as being made of bronze, a more noble metal, the copper content won’t cause them any corrosion issues. Stainless steel shafts are usually left unpainted. Props are difficult to keep coated, so these are often
left cleaned and polished, or, if you want to stop fouling, try one of the specialist propeller products such as International’s Trilux Prop-O-Drev. Trim tabs can be painted with hull paint, as can the external flanges of any seacock. Avoid painting the moving part of your speed transducer, as it will affect its calibration, but the plastic flange can be painted, as can any other plastic through hull fittings below the waterline. Bow and stern thrusters can be painted with the same hull paint, but on thrusters, as with all underwater fittings, ensure you don’t paint over any anodes.

Protective clothing When working with old and new antifoul, it is important to take some safety measures. Safety goggles are essential, and a dust mask is a must if you are sanding old antifoul. Old clothes or overalls are useful, as you will get paint on them no matter how careful you are, and a hat will help keep the paint out of your hair. Gloves will keep your hands mostly paint free
Tape types
When buying masking tape for the waterline, it is best to get the 50mm wide stuff, as you’ll be less likely to over paint it and have to remove antifoul from where it shouldn’t be. If you have drives, you’ll need some 25mm wide tape for a border around the transom shield, to avoid the copper paint coming into contact with the aluminium. If the tape is going to be on and off in the same day, cheaper stuff is generally fine. If the tape is going to be applied for a longer period, say over a couple

of weekends, I would suggest buying a good quality low adhesion variety as it will be easier to remove once the job is done. Avoid buying really cheap tape as you may find that the paint will creep under it no matter how well it is applied.
Amount of paint Each manufacturer will have a chart on their website to help you calculate the quantity of paint needed. Typically a 10 metre boat will require around five litres to achieve the correct thickness of paint. It is important to buy the right amount, and to use it all, as the thickness of the finished coat is crucial to getting the best performance out of it. 3

New hulls
If a hull has never been antifouled you will firstly need to find the waterline. Some manufacturers mark the hull or, on a small boat, you could simply launch it and mark the waterline with a marker pen. The area to be painted then needs to be sanded with a coarse paper to provide a key for the paint. Once sanded the hull should be cleaned of all dust and residue, before applying a primer coat, followed by two coats of antifoul paint.
Compatability
Most antifoul paints use copper and biocides, and generally these types can be painted on top of each other even if they were produced by different manufacturers. The supplier of your new paint should have a compatibility chart on their website to check that the new paint can be applied directly on top of last years antifoul. Launch times
Once the hull is painted the clock is ticking for the boat to be launched. Antifoul needs immersing in water within a certain period, which is often around two months but check with your paint supplier, otherwise its effectiveness diminishes.
the new and old paints are incompatible, you will need to apply a barrier coat before painting the hull. This would usually be in the form of a primer, and should be available from the supplier of your antifoul. Some paints use Teflon, or other low friction technology, which are difficult to over coat with traditional antifoul or primers. These may need to be stripped completely before painting.

When arranging a lift, try to book a time when the temperature is likely to be above 5°C. This is usually the minimum required

Get the boat pressure washed as soon as it is lifted. This should get rid of most of the slime and accumulated fouling

Use a scraper to remove any remaining fouling or areas of badly flaking old paint. Goggles are essential for this task

You can now smooth the old paint with sandpaper. Use it wet and wear a facemask and goggles. After, wash away the dust 7

Mask up the waterline. Ensure you rub the edge next to the paint firmly so that the new paint doesn’t creep up underneath 8
If you have sterndrives, mask up a 25mm border all around them to avoid corrosion issues when using copper based paint 9
Mask up anything else that you don’t want to paint, including any anodes not being removed. Painted anodes will not work
Any areas where the old paint has come away completely, leaving bare gelcoat, will need to be painted with a primer coat
Before painting, it is imperative to mix the paint properly. A mechanical device is easier, and will do a more thorough job

Once any primer is dry, you can start with the first coat of antifoul. Don’t spread it too thin; you need the right thickness over two coats
Any areas where the roller can’t reach can be touched in with a paint brush. Clean any over painting with white spirit or thinners
Check the tin for over coating times, and apply a second coat once the minimum time has elapsed

If you have paint left over, use it up by applying a third coat on high wear areas like the bow, the waterline, the keel and the chines
Before the last coat fully dries, carefully remove the masking tape. This should leave a nice crisp edge
If you can’t get to the areas where the chocks are, give them a quick coat of paint once the boat is lifted before being re-launched

TIME TAKEN After the boat has been pressure washed and dried you should be able to antifoul a boat with two coats in a single day. If the hull needs lots of preparation and a full primer coat it may take an extra day.
COST £ The cost will vary depending upon paint chosen and size of boat, but on this 28 footer we used two 2.5 litre tins of Seajet 031 Samurai making the total cost £135, including consumables.
