We have just returned from Southampton where it was lovely to meet so many of our readers. It was also heart warming to hear all of your positive comments about the magazine. Just before Southampton, I visited the Cannes boat show. This is not normally a show I attend, but I had an important dinner date, more of which later. After filtering my way through the

see, such as the impressive Jeanneau Leader 30. I am really looking forward to getting my hands on this in the spring. Now back to my important dinner date. I was here to meet up with some of my European colleagues, more specifically my fellow judges on the BOB jury panel. That’s right, I have received the distinguished honour of being asked to reside over one of Europe’s newest, and arguably toughest, boat awards, the ‘Best of Boats’. These awards have very stringent criteria for shortlist, and require approval of not just one jury member, but at least three from different European countries before being considered. You can therefore rest assured that megayachts, tanned Ray-Ban wearing any boat builder that receives a salesman and glamorous ladies that BOB award is the producer of a looked like they had walked straight off a very fine craft indeed, and one with film set, I stumbled upon the little corner of Cannes that felt like home. Here I got a cross border approval. You can find out who has made the shortlist this preview of many of the new models that year on page 6, and I’m glad to say would be seen at Southampton, such as the Antares 8, the Bayliner VR5 cuddy, the that a few of my nominations Bavaria R40 and the Sealine F530, and a few that we would not be lucky enough to are there.

New designs for Sheerline Designer Andrew Trujillo has been working on a couple of concept designs for the Norfolk boat builder, Sheerline. Responsible for the 1090 HT that launched earlier this year, Trujillo’s two new designs are for a retro-modern styled displacement 27 footer to be used on inland waterways, available in open or hardtop versions. Interiors are yet to be finalised but will be spacious, contemporary, warm and comforting. Sheerline and Trujillo have also designed a production ‘Convertible’ 1090 after a number of customers expressed a desire for a soft-top version pictured left.
Crewsaver ‘LifejacketSafe’ campaign strikes a chord The lifejacket manufacturer, Crewsaver, launched #LifejacketSafe at the Southampton Boat Show, a campaign to encourage boaters to wear, use and maintain their lifejackets properly. Over 150 people had their photos taken for Crewsaver’s #LifejacketSafe wall at the show pictured, showing their support for the campaign. Crewsaver produced a flier with the do’s and don’ts and a selection of frequently asked lifejacket safety questions. The team were also on hand, giving out advice on lifejacket safety on the stand. According to the company the most common questions asked were about lifejacket servicing. Marketing Manager, Hannah Burywood, explained “There seems to be a lot of confusion over lifejacket servicing. Our recommendation would be that your lifejacket is serviced by a professional every year. Crewsaver has a network of approved service stations and a search facility on our website to help find the closest one to you.” Two new children’s foam lifejackets were also launched at the boat show, the Euro 100N and Supersafe 150N. NEWS Wheelyboat Coulam V20 The Wheelyboat Trust handed over its first production boat, a new Coulam Wheelyboat V20, to its customer at this years Southampton Boat Show. The trust works to help venues and organisations acquire boats for disabled on-the water opportunities all over the UK, but its boats are also available for individual purchase. Keen angler, Peter Langworthy, who has been a wheelchair user since 2002 following a workplace accident, first viewed the boat in 2015 and, after a test drive with Andy Beadsley, the Director of the Trust, who is also a wheelchair user, he decided to buy it. Designed by Andrew Wolstenholme and built in the Midlands, the V20 has a roll-on, roll-off bow ramp with a level deck. Priced at £40,000, Peter’s V20 is fitted with a Suzuki 115hp with a 6hp auxiliary and is capable of 26 knots. Peter said “It is the most versatile boat I have come across. The huge floor space and a drive-fromwheelchair helm give me all the freedom and opportunities to enjoy the thrill of fastpaced powerboating and boat fishing I have always loved.” The Wheelyboat fleet, which now counts 176 craft, continues to expand and the trust will be launching another new boat on the River Orwell in early October. www.wheelyboats.org

Red Bull Dinghy Derby Australia A bet between mates in 1981 to see who could negotiate a dinghy through the backwaters of the River Murray in South Australia the fastest, has developed into a major annual festival held every February and now backed by Red Bull. This year’s Red Bull Dinghy Derby saw over 90 heavily modified dinghies race at speeds of up to 90km/h along the River Murray and the narrow creek networks surrounding Renmark, a Riverland town 250km northeast of the capital city Adelaide. A video trailer showing the intense action from this years event can be viewed here. Highlights are shown in programme ‘Up the Creek – The Story of Red Bull Dinghy Derby’ on Red Bull’s TV app. The 2017 Red Bull Dinghy Derby will be held on 5 February.

Southampton Boat Show 2016 The UK boating extravaganza that is the Southampton Boat Show, drew to a close on Sunday 25th September and its organisers, exhibitors, sponsors and visitors are hailing it a great success. Good weather resulted in high attendance, with ‘more than 109,000 visitors, with excellent enquiries and significant sales reported for exhibitors’. Held at Mayflower Park in Southampton, the show was opened by Coronation Street star, actress Michelle Keegan and Olympic medallists. The 10day show saw many UK and international brands, such as Sealine, Honda, Bavaria, Princess, Fairline, Haines, Suzuki and
Sunseeker showcasing new boats and product launches. With a claimed 750 boats on display, show organisers reported 33 global boat and product launches and 82 UK debuts at the show. Motorboat Owner Editor, Neale, said “This is our fourth Southampton Boat Show and has been one of the best yet. We thought we’d let you know how we spent our third week aboard our Nelson 44, Katriona, after the Motorboat Owner cruise in company to the Channel Islands and Brittany. On the Saturday the fleet crossed back over the Channel we headed up to Alderney. This didn’t turn out to be quite as straightforward as we expected as we picked up what turned out to be an enormous piece of 8mm fishing net. We crashed to a stop from 21 knots and both engines stalled. We managed to restart the port engine and limped into Braye Harbour where a couple of divers freed us later that afternoon (pictured). Our arrival in Alderney was timed perfectly for the last day of the Alderney Week, which included a torch-lit procession and fireworks. The next day we walked around part of the island visiting bunkers and other fortifications from World War II and prior, and enjoyed a ride on the Alderney railway, complete with its London Underground carriages. Our second night on a mooring buoy was quite rocky so we were glad to leave the next morning to St Vaast. We spent two nights inside the locked harbour basin, taking our dinghy over to the Tatihou Island and exploring the town on foot, with an obligatory visit to Monsieur Gosselin to stock up with wine and a dinner at Les Fuchsias. We had to be back by Thursday evening so Wednesday saw us leaving at 13:30 local time and covering 87nm to Brighton, arriving at around 18:00 UK time. The weather was NW force 4-5 so it was bumpier than the crossing at the beginning of the holiday, but manageable. The next day we departed Brighton at first light and covered the remaining 125nm back to our home berth on the River Orwell. The wind had moved round to the west, so heading east was quite relaxing. However, the Thames Estuary provided its normal short steep chop for the last couple of hours making Katriona seem more like a submarine in the constant spray. We arrived home at around 14:00. James Gilbert Editor replies: What bad luck picking up that net, although having visited Alderney during Alderney week, I am sure the festivities more than made up for it. It sounds like you had quite an adventure during your extra week.

TIME
IN
This month we take a trip back to the 1980’s with this magazine advert for British boat builder, Falcon Sports Boats Ltd. It features the popular 22 SPC, alongside the rare 18 SPS and striking 35 flagship.
North East Adventure
I am an avid reader of your magazine and just wanted to share this picture I took from my recent adventure. I got the boating bug many years ago when I crewed for a friend and his family on their Princess 37 at the age of 17 on a trip around the North East coast. Many years later I finally realised my dream of repeating the voyage in my own boat, a Sealine S34. To make sure myself and my wife were up to the trip we completed an RYA Powerboat Level 2 course in the Humber Estuary during a week long stay at Hull Marina. We then planned a trip out to Flamborough Head and back, covering about 130 nautical miles. It was an amazing trip and we even spotted seals just off Spurn Point. The photo is of the sun going down as we headed back up the Humber Estuary on our return leg to Hull Marina. We love our S34 and look forward to many more adventures. I would especially like to take it further south and dream of joining one of your cruise in company trips. Mike Pyott Editor replies: We would certainly love to have you along Mike. Your picture is exactly what makes boating so special. You just don’t get sunsets like that ashore. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

NEWBOATS We trawled the aisles and pontoons to find you the latest in boats, gear and technology. We’ll start with some of the best new boats at the show
Targa 30.1
PRICE FROM
£216,000
With Botnia Marin developing its models over the last few years, it had left a bit of a gap between the 27 and 32. That gap has now been filled with the new 30.1. The .1 distinguishes the boat from previous generation Targa 30’s, with the new boat coming with the two cabin, five berth arrangement found on other models, and a separate and spacious toilet compartment in the aft cabin. Power is supplied by either single or twin Volvo Penta sterndrives, with the former being D6, 330 or 400, and the latter being D4 300’s. Look out for a full test soon. LOA: 10.1m Beam: 9.2m Displacement: 5,500kg www.wessexmarine.co.uk
Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895
The popular Jeanneau Merry Fisher 855 has received a facelift, and has been re-launched as the 895. The new model features a slightly longer hull, an opening side gate for quick pontoon access, an optional forward sundeck and numerous interior changes and redesigns, such as a forward dinette PRICE seat that more easily turns into a forward facing FROM £63,384 navigator’s position, that should make this already great little weekend sports fisher, even better. Like the 855, power is available from either single or twin outboards, with a total of between 300hp and 400hp on tap. You can also opt for the Legend version which comes with a navy blue hull. The 305 Drophead is the first of a new breed of Day Cruiser from Nimbus and offers all of the premium Scandinavian features we have come to expect, in a stylish and economical package. Built on the same platform as the 305 Coupé, the Drophead hull does not have a planing threshold, so offers the optimum speed for any conditions from 1 to 22 knots from its single Volvo Penta D3, up to 225hp. Mercury Active Trim
Another new launch from Mercury is said to make boating easier. Mercury Active Trim simplifies boating by taking control of the engine trim, leaving the helmsman free to concentrate on driving, on Mercury and Mariner outboards from 40hp to 400hp. By automatically selecting the right trim setting for the boat speed, engine rpm and sea condition, active trim can offer fuel savings of up to 40%, as well as increased top speed and better handling. Research has shown that as many as 60% of boaters do not use the power trim, and a further percentage are not confident in using it effectively. Active Trim immediately delivers a tangible benefit to these, but is equally useful to the experienced helmsman. Price £399 www.barrus.co.uk

The popular Mercury 115 FourStroke has been used as a base for Mercury’s new 115 Pro XS. The 2.1 litre engine is said to outperform any other high-output 115hp outboard on the market. Figures suggest that the Pro XS will deliver faster acceleration and a higher top speed than the standard Mercury 115. The engine also provides up to 48% more battery charging at idle, to meet the increased demands of modern boat electrics and electronics. Price £10,215 www.barrus.co.uk 30

he one thing that strikes us when we do a My Boat feature, is the sheer love and dedication that owners have towards their vessel. These feelings are obviously heightened when the owner knows the history of the boat and that it has been through some ‘testing times’. The boat that we are featuring here, has literally ‘been through the wars’. It was one of the ‘little ships’ requisitioned by the government in 1940, towed down the

For any boat of this age, it has to be a labour of love and we went along to visit the owners, Sally Bridgeman and John Calvert, to find out why they were so keen to take on such a project, and how their ‘love affair’ with L’Orage has developed. A proud moment. Retracing its steps, L’Orage’s first crossing to Dunkirk under new ownership in 2010
photos of the restoration work and we became engrossed, so here follows a brief history of this plucky little ship. L’Orage was built as a Gentleman’s River Cruiser in 1938 by Boats & Cars, Kingston Ltd. Its former name was ‘Surrey’ but the name was changed by the English gentleman owner who moored the boat in France during the 50’s. According to a letter that Raymond Baxter received from the granddaughter of this gentleman, he had been unhappy with treatment he had
received from his French counterparts, so one day, when he picked up a Lalique statue, turned it over and saw the word ‘L’Orage’ on the bottom, he had the idea to change the name to something more in keeping with the country. On changing the name, he said he didn’t experience any more problems. As mentioned previously, during May 1940, L’Orage had been one of the many little ships that crossed the Channel as part of Operation Dynamo to rescue

stranded British and allied forces from the beaches of Dunkirk. The total number of vessels, including Royal Navy Ships, paddle steamers, ferries and civilian craft, was 933, and the role the little ships played was vital to the whole operation. Along with other little ships, L’Orage went backwards and forwards to the beaches, bringing back as many soldiers as they could to the larger ships waiting offshore. This was done under continued bombardment from enemy positions behind the beach over a five-day period. When L’Orage finally got the order to
return to Ramsgate, the skipper was told to take a full complement of 36 soldiers aboard. How did they managed to fit all those men in a 29ft boat? It was all part of the spirit and miracle of Dunkirk and L’Orage was part of that miracle. In 1964, Raymond Baxter had been on the lookout for a boat he could use for cruising with the family on the Thames. The story goes that he was driving his car near Staines Bridge and he saw L’Orage in a boatyard on the opposite bank, he immediately drove over to see it, fell in love with it instantly and bought it straight away. It was later that year that as he and his son Graham were flying across the Channel, they were reminded that the following year, 1965, would be the 25th anniversary of the evacuation of Dunkirk and thought it would be such a wonderful idea to make the trip back aboard L’Orage. Raymond contacted the editor of the Sunday Times to ask if he could put an advert in the paper, informing readers Bow V berth showing planking before renovation of his intentions and asking if any other 36

Fifty five boats made the crossing in May 1965 but not all of them were Dunkirk Little Ships. From this Raymond Baxter became the Founder of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships (ADLS) and was made Honorary Admiral from 1982, with L’Orage as his flagship. Raymond Baxter continued to use L’Orage as a family cruiser on the River Thames until his

To this day, The Association of Dunkirk Little Ships are continuing his legacy and make their pilgrimage back to Dunkirk every 5 years, with L’Orage doing every muster, with the exception of 1970 when boats were prevented from doing the crossing due to bad weather. When Sally and John bought L’Orage in 2009, it needed a fair bit of work doing to it to turn it into the comfortable cruiser, ideal for two people, that they aspired to. Q&A
Your Questions Answered
What is my hull speed?
Q I often hear references to ‘hull
speed’ in terms of the most efficient speed to run at. What is hull speed, and how can I find out what mine is?
A In short, the hull speed is the best
possible speed that a hull can make before fuel use increases disproportionately to any further increase in speed. With planing hulled boats you have to go through this phase before reaching more economical speeds again when the boat is running on top of the water. It’s all to do with the drag of the water and is affected by the shape of the hull, the hull’s waterline length, the hull’s waterline length to beam ratio and the boat’s weight. In short, the waves that the hull makes at the bow and stern when going through the water, should be the same distance apart as the boat’s waterline length. The speed when this happens can be worked out using the square root of the boat’s waterline length in feet, multiplied by the speed/length ratio of 1.34. So if we take a boat with a waterline length of 24ft, the hull speed will be 4.9 (the square root of 24) x 1.34 = 6.56 knots. If you prefer to use metres, the speed length ratio is 2.43.
Television aerial search
Q We want to be able to watch a bit of TV on our boat, but are not sure what is the best aerial of the many that seem to be on the market. Can you help?
A If you just want to receive standard terrestrial
freeview channels I can recommend the Status 330 omni directional TV antenna, which comes with an amplifier to boost the signal. I have an older version on my boat and it always manages to pick up a good selection of channels wherever we moor, although I am not guaranteed a full complement of channels at every location. For a more serious telly addict, perhaps you should try a self tracking satellite system. They have come down in price and size over the last few years with the 12.5 inch KVH TracVision TV1 being around £2,000. One of these will allow you to watch telly on the move, without having to constantly re-scan and re-tune each time you change location and will provide a much wider range of channels. 42

Measure KAD44 fuel flow
Q I notice that many modern boats come with built in
fuel flow information at the helm. Is there a cost effective system I could put on my older Fairline Targa, fitted with Volvo KAD44’s, to provide this information?
A Going back about 10 years there was a reasonably priced product produced by New
Zealand company Navman, to do just this. It seemed to work OK, but I understand problems meant that production was stopped not much later. You may still be able to pick one up if you are lucky, as I have seen them offered for sale occasionally. Other than that you would have to look at something from US company FloScan. They don’t appear to have a current UK distributor, but you could try contacting FloScan Europe, who are based in the Netherlands. FloScan equipment may not provide the cost effective solution you are looking for, as it is top end equipment, but it will do the job very well.

Q&A
Your Questions Answered
Zinc drive anodes corroding quickly
Q I have a twin engined cruiser with outdrives and find
that the zinc anodes on the drives are corroding away very quickly. Last year the boat was in the water for eight months and the anodes were all but completely gone when it came out. I understood that they should typically last the whole year. What can I do to extend their lifespan, as next year I would like to leave the boat in the water longer?
A Well firstly, it should be comforting to know that the anodes are doing their job
properly and taking the hit of corrosion, rather than your expensive drives and props. I do agree though that 8 months is a bit short, as I usually find I have plenty of metal left on mine after 12 or more months in the water. The speed of corrosion could be down to many things, such as stray currents, or being moored close to large amounts of underwater metal, including large steel hulled vessels close by. If you don’t already have one fitted, a galvanic isolator is a good investment. This protects your underwater gear against stray currents and is particularly beneficial for boats left plugged into shore power. Another useful trick is to add extra anodes. I did this on my last boat by mounting a hull anode in close proximity to the drive on the transom and connecting it electrically inside the engine room. This extra lump of sacrificial metal shares the corrosion load and slows the speed of corrosion of the existing anodes. Lastly, and this is something I am trying this year so I am not able to confirm its effectiveness, you could change the zinc anodes to aluminium. These are lighter, often cheaper, and are said to offer better, longer lasting protection than zinc.
What is prop cupping?
Q We often hear about pitch and diameter on props, but what is cupping?
A Cupping is where the blade is given a
concave surface. The benefits of cupping are a greater top speed and improved efficiency, and the effects are similar to changing the pitch of the prop. Cupping can also reduce ventilation. 44

Petrol v’s diesel
Q I am looking to buy a sportscruiser of
around 25ft. Most of the ones in my budget come with petrol engines, often V6 or V8. I keep hearing how expensive they will be to run, but with diesel versions usually out of my price range I don’t think I have a choice. I am hoping that the tales I hear are wrong, can you confirm?
A There is no denying that a V6 or V8 petrol engine will be more expensive to
run than a diesel, but depending upon how you use it, the extra cost may not be as much as you think. I have a bit of personal knowledge in this area, as I had a 25ft V8 powered boat that I re-engined with diesel. With the V8 engine it would consume around 10 gallons (45 litres) per hour at a speed of around 25 knots. This was an old school V8 with a carburettor. A more modern version with fuel injection should be a little bit more economical. When I put a four cylinder diesel engine in the boat I was still cruising at 25 knots, but only using around 6 gallons (27 litres) per hour. If you take an average of 50 hours per year, you would use a theoretical 900 extra litres with the petrol boat, but as many of the hours are at slower speeds, the real figure would probably be more like 600. That amounts to around £750 per year extra to run the petrol boat, but the exact figure will depend upon your usage. When you look at the price difference between the same models with petrol and diesel, the savings you make on buying the petrol boat will go a long way to offsetting the extra fuel costs.

Where the Irish Sea meets the Atlantic lies a charming, unspoilt fishing village that attracts boaters from far and wide
R
arely do you come across a place that intrigues you so much that you vow to go back, but the tiny fishing village of Kilmore Quay is just such a place. Located in the south-eastern corner of the Republic of Ireland, with all states of the tide access and stunning scenery, it is an ideal and popular destination for boaters from the Welsh coast and,
indeed from ports and harbours further afield on the west coast of the UK. It is also the perfect ‘stepping stone’ to all the beautiful harbours along the southern Irish coastline, such as Waterford, Cork and Arklow. The quaint, coastal village is both peaceful and rural, with rows of tiny white-washed, thatched cottages leading

down to the harbour. Approximately 5km inland from Kilmore Quay lies the village of Kilmore which is the centre of the parish, where local heritage and customs date back over a thousand years. Dominant on the landscape here are the ruins of a 12th century church alongside the Grange Cemetery, which is claimed to be one of the oldest Christian burial grounds in the country. Latterly, the coastal village of Kilmore Quay grew up around the fishing quay. Steeped in seafaring history, Kilmore
Quay has been an important fishing port since the 1840’s, when the harbour was built, and is now one of the busiest fishing harbours in Ireland. The RNLI became established in the harbour in 1847. Today, it has a Tamar Class Lifeboat based in the marina and, with just over 100 families living in Kilmore Quay, 15 of these have family members actively serving as volunteer crew, with many more involved in land-based duties and fundraising. It is therefore not surprising that the lifeboat is a central part of village

tested Honda BF4, BF5 & BF6 Portable outboards are big PRICE FROM sellers in the UK and you’ll be forgiven for looking further than the discounts at your local dealer. All outboard manufacturers compete to be the choice of the many boat owners looking for something small and lightweight every year. The Honda 4, 5 and 6 horsepower models all stem from the same engine, with various tuning differences and carburettor tweaks to offer the different power options. With just the one cylinder, they’re a good bet for getting the most power for the least weight, being just light enough to carry, and vitally, attach to the transom of a floating tender. While each manufacturer will obviously claim to offer the best engine, they have very different features, with varying brands suiting different buyers. If you

want to spend as little as possible, then a Chinese import will appeal, and if you want to be as fuel efficient as possible, Torqeedo’s electric motors will tick that box. But if it’s lightweight, smoothness and ease of use you’re after, then you may have to look a little harder. Honda launched its three portable engines back in August, although with an embargo until the 2016 Southampton Boat Show. We got on the water the same week as Suzuki also launched three engines with the same numbers on the back . We’ll be looking at those next month, but the timing meant we had a great opportunity to test the engines against each other. Suzuki has focused on shedding weight with their new range but, while Honda hasn’t ignored that, it has chosen to focus on another aspect. Honda is thinking that saving a few grams isn’t as important as the An enlarged fuel tank provides additional range user experience. Using specially designed 56

mounts, the engine is kept as separate from the boat as possible. Single cylinder engines are prone to some serious vibration, especially at low revs, but the boffins at Honda’s research & development facility have managed to keep an impressive amount of the vibration at bay. We’re told that the frequencies of vibration have been altered to not only remove tiller shake, but also the vibration that travels through the boat and can be felt by the other passengers. It all sounds very complicated, but we had a go in various inflatable and solid boats and came away rather impressed. While this isn’t new technology, in fact Suzuki was talking about it that same week, it’s the first time we’ve actually seen it work this well. It’s even a little unnerving that the engine visually shakes, and yet you are unable to feel it through your hand. On the water there’s little to note, other than the loss of vibration. We tried the four, five and six horsepower on various boats, and they provided the power as we expected. Alongside the increased smoothness, there have been a number of internal changes, including an enlarged internal fuel tank and a smart decompression mechanism for starting. This releases cylinder pressure and reduces the amount of force required to get the engine to turn over. Like many modern outboards, there is an oil-indicator light on the block. However, Honda has switched it around so that it’s lit green when the oil pressure is

Regardless of whether you notice the light, if a pressure problem occurs, it will limit the revs to avoid causing damage to the engine. On the water, the outboards performed as expected, but with a noticeable reduction in vibration
quite a difference when carrying them down the pontoon, and even more so when lowering onto the transom of a floating tender. The Honda range were the heaviest in this class. However, using various lighter parts, they’ve shaved a couple of kgs off, and a short shaft is now 27kg, while the long shaft is 500g more. In comparison, Suzuki’s new range of four, five and six horsepower models are 24kg. While it might not sound much, it’s important not to underestimate the difference that even just three kg can make when leaning over the transom. So Suzuki remains the class leader when it comes to weight, but Honda has caught up with the likes of the Yamaha with its 27kg models. Honda has priced the engines boldly, being slightly more than its rivals, with
the most popular six horsepower model starting from £1199. In comparison, the Yamaha is £1129, the Suzuki is £1125 and the 26kg Mariner is £989. But, as I said at the start, it’s all about what matters to the end user. If you’re lifting your engine off every time you use it, then weight will be important. tested Cabrio CH320 PRICE
£16,474
The folding transom range of tenders from Italian builder, Aer Marine, might make sense on paper, but do they work in real life? We had a look at the mid-range 320. Keeping your tender on the bathing platform is so ‘last season’. It’s all about tender garages, apparently. But even if you’re privileged enough to have a tender garage, the chances are that it will be a tight squeeze to get a proper boat in there. Aer Marine tackles this problem head on with its Cabrio range of tenders, which all have a very unique feature. On the water they may appear very much a traditional tender; solid V-shape hull, inflatable tubes, an engine on the back and seats in the middle. But when it comes to stowing it, the transom, complete with engine, folds
forward into the centre of the boat. Once the boat is ready to be put away on deck, into a tender garage or even into the boot of a car, the process of folding the transom moves the engine inside the boat, reducing not only the length, but height as well. On the smaller tenders, this is a manual operation, but with engines of 30hp or more you get some electrical assistance. The 320 tested is in the middle of the range and, as standard, comes with the manual option. But for £4,450 you too can wear a smug look as the outboard folds into the boat, at the press of a button. The main block of the transom doesn’t move, which is key to giving the boat the structural strength to be able to handle the pressure when things get choppy.
60
October 2016
All tests in Motorboat Owner are carried out by real boaters in real life situations
What does move is the rear bench seat, the backrest and the central part of the transom. With the transom being hinged near the floor, there’s plenty of movement to lever the engine forward, so once folded fully, the propeller still sticks out behind the transom, but is inside the length of the tubes. With the 25hp outboard as tested, the engine is still the tallest part of the boat, although the Cabrio has a solution to keep the height low, but we’ll get to that later. The 25hp is a twin cylinder engine, but the optional 30hp is a three-cylinder unit, and thus physically heavier and bigger, so you need to think carefully before ticking that option box. Underway, the Cabrio is like any other RIB when tinkering around the harbour. The standard Yamaha outboard is as smooth and refined as expected; the steering is the typical off-the-shelf cable system, so naturally lacks much feedback at low speeds, and it’s the same story with the throttle. The transom design is clever, and despite the leverage from the engine there’s plenty of structural rigidity to allow it to perform like a traditional fixed transom RIB. As mentioned before, with the engine folded, the engine protrudes above the console. To tackle height, the Cabrio has a very shallow hull. It’s not uncommon for tenders to have flatter hulls than more performance-focused boats, but it is worth remembering this before you whizz across a bay in anything other than flat water.
The Cabrio 320 CH provides good seating for four and solid grabrails along both sides
The day of testing was particularly rough, certainly for a 3.2m boat and, heading out of Lymington, the waves were right on the bow, which to be fair is probably the safest angle of attack. The engine weighs the best part of 80kg and with just me on board, that’s quite a lot of weight close to the back, meaning the weight distribution was not ideal. But the boat pushed through and, to the west, the water was slightly

tested Cabrio CH320 continued...... calmer, allowing me to ride the waves and give it a better trial, reaching speeds in excess of 30 knots. Some boats love big waves, dealing with them easily and generating excitement. The Cabrio is not one of these, but it isn’t designed to be. If it’s that rough, the Cabrio will be safely tucked away on the mother ship anyway. Satisfied that I had given it a good run, I headed back into the calm of the river, and could once again appreciate that it’s a smart and comfortable tender. The seating is fairly typical of a 3.2m tender, with a rear bench, forward bow seat and a seat to the side of the starboard console. There are a few nice touches, such as the solid handrail all along the tubes, which will give passengers something to grab, and a couple of tube cushions for the bow seat. All the seating is attached by buttons and is customisable to fit in with the colour coding of your choice. Given the restrictions of size that the Cabrio has to abide by, I think it’s fair to

cut it some slack. It wasn’t great at handling the waves at all angles, but that’s not what it’s about. It’s a tender that takes you and your guests to shore when anchored, and stows in a confined garage when not. The biggest issue may be the price. Fully spec’d, the Cabrio is edging into equivalent Williams Jet RIB territory. If you are on a budget, removing the engine off a standard 3.2m RIB when stowing will save you a fortune. As tested, the Cabrio ended up nearer to the top end than expected, but if you need a RIB to fit your garage and don’t want to be taking the engine off, the Motorboat Cabrio 320 may Owner be the most cost “A unique tender effective answer. for a compact Greg Goulding

CLASSIC CRUISERS
a complete guide to the best boats on the used market
Princess 266 W hat if we told you that you could buy a sleek Princess sportscruiser for under £20k? Those new to the subject might be a little surprised, but you can. This month we celebrate this UK builder’s smallest ever sportscruiser, the 266. In the late 80’s UK boat builders were turning their focus onto open cockpit med-style boating. For Plymouth-based boat builder, Princess, it was time to bring in designer, Bernard Olesinski, to help satisfy its ‘med-dreaming’ customers. In 1983, Princess introduced a new range
of sportscruisers, Riviera, with its debut model the 286, a 30ft sterndrive-powered boat. However, with rival boat builders such as Fairline producing models such as the Olesinski-designed Sunfury 26 and the Sportfury, and Sealine with their popular 255 Senator, there was clearly a demand for Princess to build a smaller model. Four years after the 286 was launched, a smaller sister model was unveiled. The 266 Riviera offered the same four-berth accommodation as the 286, but on a smaller, open plan scale, and boy did Princess get it right. The ‘chunkiness’ of

the beamy 286 had vanished to reveal a compact, very sporty and sleek-looking sportscruiser that could really turn heads. It had the desirable spacious sun-seeking cockpit and modern styling, with features such as a curved single-pane windscreen, integral bathing platform and a transom door. It was fast too. Fitted with the largest twin petrol engines, it offered a top speed of 40 knots. Another influential British rival at the time was Sunseeker, with models such as the 1986 Portofino 31 sharing a similar ‘trendy’ interior finish. In 1988, Fairline
launched its counter attack on the 266 with the launch of the successful Targa 27, which was based on the hull of the Sunfury and Sportfury. Production of the 266 outran the 286, which ceased production in 1991, but only by a year. Production of the 266 ended in 1992 and sadly it was to be the last compact sportscruiser from Princess. The Riviera range continued on through the early 90’s until finally it was replaced by the V-class range in 1994, with its debut model, the stunning V39. With only 222 built, the 266 is quite

rare, and with the Princess reputation of sturdy build quality, it is not surprising that good examples don’t stay on the market for long. It seems the model was successful, as intended, out in the Med too, with several examples currently available for sale out in sunnier climes. We looked over an example for sale at TBS Boats Penton Hook to see what the boat has to offer today. Interior A centre companionway leads to the lower accommodation, which is accessed via a Perspex sliding door. The door itself can be quite stiff and tricky to open, and has quite a fiddly locking mechanism. Three steps lead down to the saloon and you’ll find yourself in a central lobby area, the galley unit is to port, with a door to the toilet compartment and the mid berth tucked away aft, to starboard. In this area
the flat raised foredeck provides decent headroom, largely due to the fact that the floor is scalloped into the hull. Here, there is approximately 5ft 9in headroom, sloping to around 5ft 5in in front of the dinette. Ahead lies the substantial, ovalshaped raised dinette area, comfortable for seating six people, maybe more. The dinette can be converted into a double (measuring 6ft 7in along the centre line) or used in a V-berth format, which might be preferable if you have youngsters on board. Five hatches under the dinette seating reveal unlined hull storage, and these might be fitted with individually made-to-measure vinyl storage buckets. Movement or delamination can occur where mouldings, such as the seating, join the hull, which is something worth looking closely for. However, we are told that these are an easy DIY fix. It is cosy and private down below and

there is plenty of room for a couple to stretch out either side in the evening. Light and ventilation is provided by a foredeck escape hatch above the dinette and two small hull portholes. It is worth checking around these for signs of leaks and water damage. The 266 lacks the wood interior seen in the 286 but, instead, has a ‘sporty’ feel with galley surfaces covered in two-tone grey vinyl, much like the interiors of Sunseeker Portofinos of the time. This may look dated today, but we think its part of the charm of the boat, giving it a very retro feel. It is fairly practical too, as it won’t show the bumps and knocks like wood and is pretty much maintenance free. However, the vinyl might be brittle, peeling away or showing shrinkage in places, so it is worth checking it over. It tends to suffer around the toilet doorframe in particular. The seating and bedding upholstery is unmistakably Princess, with the classic patterned fabric. Owners may well have replaced the upholstery to bring it up to date, but again, if it is in good
condition, it is part of the boat’s 80’s character. The galley is positioned in the port corner and is well appointed for day boating and weekend cruising. It offers a large round metal sink, a two-burner hob, concealed by a sliding or lift-out top, and a fridge. Under the worktop are three narrow-shelved cupboards. Above the worktop is a two-tier storage unit with Perspex, slide-opening storage lockers. Inside there is sectioned storage, a very

useful feature provided by Princess. However, with narrow openings to these shallow lockers, you may find the only place to store a large saucepan or a frying pan is the bow locker under the dinette seating. Between the galley and dinette is a drinks cabinet, with a pull-out drawer with storage for four bottles. Availability of sockets may be something to look at in the main cabin, as the boat we boarded only had three single sockets, one at floor level, one above the sliding galley unit and one over the mid berth. The boat was not originally fitted with an oven or grill. However, we have seen a microwave oven set into the cupboard area to the right of the fridge and, on another boat, the fridge had been moved over to accommodate a full-size oven with hob and grill. The toilet compartment is small but suitably The double mid berth is tucked out equipped, with a shower, sink and storage of sight under the raised helm position and its size is unfortunately one of the is a handy large open-fronted locker at compromises of having such a large cockpit and saloon area. Next to the berth is a seat, which is also a storage locker, and above this is a small hanging locker built into the bulkhead. A privacy curtain encloses the seat and a small standing area for dressing. An overnighting couple may consider making up the bed in the saloon area as it offers more space and better access when nature calls. For a family the mid berth would be an ideal sleeping ‘den’ for youngsters. The moulded helm console consists of two slanted dash panels, with chart storage and a compass between. Unfortunately, if you were looking to add modern navigation equipment, bracket mounting looks like your only real option. The canopy is in two sections, either side of the radar arch. A sloping aft canopy, radar arch to transom, was standard, but owners may have added a framework, thus providing standing headroom throughout. It seems Princess had learned from its mistakes with the 286’s sloping front canopy, which made it impossible to stand up and helm, as there

configurations. Engine options were pretty much Volvo across the board, with the exception of twin Mercruiser 180hp petrols. Nearly all Volvo engine installations were mated to 290 drives. The initial base engine was a single 270hp Volvo AQ271 petrol, which was priced at £34,672 in 1988 (with a duo prop upgrade option). Next in line was the single 200hp AD41 diesel with a duo prop, priced at £38,467. There were no twin diesel options initially, with twin 120hp AQ131s, 146hp AQ151s and 167hp AQ171s petrols offered. Twin V6 petrols came along later, in the shape of 205hp AQ431/DP and AQ205/DP (£49,942), and these remained the most expensive option for a good few years, until the introduction of twin diesel 130hp AD31s
This 1988 version was re-engined with 180hp diesel BMW 636s paired to Mercury outdrives
in 1990 (£55,688). Interestingly, that same year, the base engine was a single 330hp Volvo 740 big block V8 petrol engine, priced at £47,092. The 266 looks fast and is fast. This 28 footer can deliver speeds of up to 40 knots. However, ultimately engine choice will come down to intended usage, price and running costs. Running a petrol boat won’t be as cheap as running a diesel. However, the savings you make on the asking price may help offset the extra fuel costs. Boats fitted with twin Volvo 205hp petrols should offer a cruising speed of 25 knots, using around 12-14 gallons per hour. Flatten the throttles and this will go up to 27-29 gallons per hour. Smaller twin petrols, such as 167hp Volvo AQ171C should give speeds of up to 24 knots. The original and rare twin Mercruiser 180hp configuration should give a top speed of 35 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots. Finding examples of the 266 that have been re-engined with diesels is to be expected, but we are also aware of a 1991 example that was re-engined in 2000 with a pair of modern 220hp Mercruiser 4.3L V6 EFIs, giving a top speed 38 knots. As you would expect, diesel boats are the most economical and therefore, the
72
October 2016
most desirable, but these are very rare. They also command the highest price on the used market, at around £25-30k. Twin 130hp AD31 versions should give 27 knots and approximately 2.5 miles per gallon at cruising speeds (estimated 22-24knots). A single 200hp AD41 should be the most economical, giving approximately 4mpg. Engine access is very good, and is via a large hatch in the middle of the cockpit floor, which doesn’t require lifting the back seat like some other similar boats. The hatch is usually on a single hydraulic strut, which may have corroded, seized or lost pressure though age. Once inside the engine bay, access to the engines (or engine) is narrow, but there is enough room in front to change an impeller or a belt. It is worth noting that bilge fans were only fitted to petrol boats during the build. The single 78-gallon fuel tank forms the forward bulkhead of the engine bay. 266’s fitted with a single diesel will have a
smaller 60-gallon tank. Older Volvo Penta engines, such as the AD41, are reliable and easy to work on, with good availability of parts. It is always important to check that the drives and engines, new or old, have been routinely maintained. If you have any concerns we would recommend that you have an engineer give them a thorough check over for you. Most importantly a keen amateur should be able to tackle most or all of the ongoing drive and engine servicing. Conclusion The ‘pocket rocket’ 266 makes for an affordable first boat. It offers a great first step on the sportscruiser ladder, and is ideal for weekending or longer term cruising. Look for a well maintained example, paying close attention to engine and drive condition.
Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a YDSA or a IIMS accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

ESSENTIAL GUIDE
Using Radar
R
adar is an essential piece of electronics for those going offshore, some may argue it is more useful than a chart plotter, as not only will it show targets in poor visibility, you can also use it for position fixing and collision avoidance too. To get the best out of your radar you really need to be comfortable with some of its basic functions. You can, of course, just turn it on when you encounter poor visibility and hope that it delivers what you expect, but learn a few basic tricks and the radar can do so much more and be of much greater use in the times when you really need it. While this is by no means an exhaustive feature on radar functions, it should provide some basic information that
everyone that owns a radar should know and understand. Don’t just wait for a foggy day to put these features to test, have your radar on every time you go out and learn to feel comfortable with its operating system and functions. This isn’t just a recommendation, it is your duty. The collision regulations state that skippers should maintain a good lookout, using all available means appropriate to the conditions. This means that if you have radar fitted to your boat, you should know how to use it when it is required. All of the functions we look at on these pages will be found on all radar units, although the way to access them will depend on the operating system, so you may need to get your owners manual out.

Alignment Firstly, if you
haven’t already done so, you should check the alignment. When the radar is fitted, it could easily be a few degrees out of true. It is even possible that it has been installed 90° or even 180° out. Obviously this means that the picture shown will not be truly representative of the situation out at sea. The easiest way to check alignment is by using the radar overlay onto the chart. Find a suitable hard shoreline, or nice solid target that is also on the chart, and ensure that the radar return concurs with the chart. Charts can of course be slightly out, so maybe check three or four different objects just to be sure.
The lower image shows how a radar overlay may look if the alignment is out
Screen orientation The next step to check is that the radar
is operating in the right orientation. You can usually choose between Head up, where the radar points in the direction of the boat, North up, where the radar screen will always be orientated with North towards the top of the screen, and Course up, which is similar to Head up but will take into account the difference between your course steered, and your course over the ground. Most people prefer Head up, so that a target that is right on the nose will appear at the 12 o’clock position on the screen. The radar screen then represents your view out of the windscreen. When you use the radar overlaid onto your chart, the orientation will automatically change to match. So if you use your chart North up, your radar will match this in this mode.
Head up is the most common way to view a radar screen Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

PRACTICAL
Range Choosing the right
range when the radar is in use is vital. Radars work by line of sight, so their effective range is more down to how high the antenna is mounted, than its power. For most small boats, radar should be effective at picking up small targets for around 6nm, large ships at about 12nm and tall coastlines at over 20nm. I tend to use my radar on the 1.5nm range when close to shore or inside harbours, 3nm in crowded coastal waters and 6nm when out in open waters, but it’s not as simple as that. To ensure you always have a good picture of what is out there, you should cycle the ranges up and down frequently so you can pick up other targets that may otherwise be too close or too far away to see on the range you are using. In short, you have to constantly interact with the radar to get the best out of it. Some radar sets offer a dual range function, whereby you can split the screen and have one half on close range and the other looking at the wider picture.
Gain Once you have the basic
settings correct and how you want them, the next step is to play around with the gain control. Most sets have an automatic gain function, and 95% of the time this is perfectly adequate, but using the manual gain control can sometimes allow you to get a better picture of what is going on. The more gain you apply, the more targets will appear on the screen, to the extent that full 100% gain usually results in a complete block out of the screen, and conversely, 0% gain will leave the screen completely free of targets, even if you can see them out of the window. Imagine it like a radio’s squelch button. Turn it one way and you have complete silence, blocking out real

transmissions as well as background noise. Turn it the other way and you have a mass of white noise. You need to find the happy medium where there are no false targets and all real targets are visible. Adjusting the gain correctly can help you see really small targets, such as pot markers on a calm day.
JUST RIGHT
Clutter controls Your set should come with both sea and rain
clutter controls. Sea clutter is the returns you get from the waves in heavy seas, particularly on the windward side of the vessel where the waves are usually steeper faced. If you are out in rough stuff and your radar screen is full of lots of small and weak returns that appear and disappear, you should adjust your sea clutter to the offshore mode to remove these. You can also use the gain control, but be careful you don’t lose genuine targets in doing so. Heavy rain showers can show on a radar as one large solid return, that often resemble a landmass or coastline. Apart from being slightly disconcerting to see this when you were expecting no land mass, rain clutter can mask real and dangerous targets. Using the rain clutter control will drop the return from the rain and leave just the real solid objects that may be hiding inside. Another useful trick here is to overlay your AIS layer onto the radar screen, if you can. This will at least show any Two example of rain clutter. Note the waypoint (top) and AIS target (bottom) that appear to be on large targets that may be lurking what looks like a shoreline but is, in fact, just rain inside a rain shower. PRACTICAL
Variable range markers (VRM)
If you have the radar rings turned on, your screen will tell you how far apart they are. This can be useful for roughly measuring distance from a target or shoreline, but if you want to be exact, which is useful when position fixing using the radar in conjunction with an EBL, you can bring up a variable range marker. This is a further ring that you can move. Put this ring onto a target and you will get an exact distance.
MARPA
With AIS, MARPA (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) has taken a bit of a back seat. Having said that, with not all boats transmitting AIS, it can still be a useful tool. If your radar has MARPA, all you need to do is position the cursor over the target of interest and request that it ‘acquires’ the A MARPA target with vector line target. Once acquired, the radar will use the targets relative motion to determine its speed, direction of travel and, most importantly, its closest point of approach (CPA) and time to CPA. It can also be set to alarm if an acquired target becomes ‘dangerous’. You can also set ‘vectors’ onto the target to determine where it will be in a given amount of time. There is one important thing to understand about MARPA, and that is that the accuracy of the information it provides will depend upon whether the radar is ‘sea stabilised’ or ‘ground stabilised’. Most leisure units are installed in such a way that they are ground stabilised, this means they use course over the ground and speed over the ground information for MARPA. To be sea stabilised, which is the way a radar should be set up to use MARPA for collision avoidance, the radar would need to be fed with your Once acquired, MARPA provides heading and speed through the water. some useful target information 78
October 2016
Electronic bearing line (EBL) An EBL is a really useful
collision avoidance tool. The bearing line can be turned on and positioned onto a target. If the target starts to move down the EBL towards your position, a risk of collision exists. An EBL can also be used to provide an accurate position fix, when used in conjunction with a VRM. Just plot the distance and bearing of a known charted object from the VRM and EBL and you can plot where you are on a paper chart.
Guard zones and alarms
Not many people are aware that you can set up zones on your radar that will trigger an alarm if a target enters it. The zones can be sectored, or a full circle around your vessel, and can be adjusted in size. Guard zones are particularly useful when you are single handed as, while it is no substitute, it’s the next best thing to having a second pair of eyes on the radar while you concentrate on keeping a lookout and driving the boat.

PRACTICAL
Side lobes If you ever find yourself in thick fog, and in close proximity to a large vessel such as a slab sided ferry or container ship, you may have experienced a situation where the radar return encircles your boat on the screen. This can be a little disconcerting, as it is not always clear exactly where the target Side lobes can provide a confusing return on the radar screen is, although you know it is big and close. You can usually clear the picture enough to see the real target by reducing the gain, or adjusting the sea clutter. Alternatively, if you can overlay AIS, this will identify the position of the target as well as its direction and speed. The reason for this phenomenon is what is known as side lobes. When the radar transmits, it sends its signal out in one direction, in quite a narrow band known as the beam width. Unfortunately, despite the manufacturers best endeavours, there will often be some stray transmissions sent out in other directions as well. These transmissions are usually too weak to show any returns, but when a substantial target is very close they will pick it up and plot a return on the screen and produce the effect shown in the image. If you see this image out on open water, it is an indication that you are too close. We were at a quarter of a mile from a car ferry in this instance, and out at sea there is usually little reason to be this close. Fog can be unnerving, but radar is the right tool for the job, as long as you are comfortable using it

I
t was at the 2015 Southampton Boat Show that Bavaria dealer, Clipper Marine teased us with news of a new boat design that they said would be revolutionary. Sure enough, just under a year later, I found myself on the banks of Loch Lomond about to take the new Bavaria E40 out for a test. So what is the E40, and what makes it different from other boats of a similar ilk? Well, it’s all about the E in the name, which stands for ‘efficiency’. It might have the looks of a boat that is capable of high speeds with a fuel consumption to match, but the E40 is in fact all about having the sort of facilities you may find on many other 40 footers, but taking more time to enjoy them by travelling
at a gentler pace, with a commensurate reduction in fuel bills. Bavaria hasn’t just achieved this by sticking a small engine where you would expect to find two large ones, it has also redesigned the hull profile to deliver a slippery and efficient underwater profile. The tricks don’t end there though, Bavaria has also redefined the layout, with some unique and clever features that ensure the E40 delivers
84
October 2016
A versatile layout. The forward cabin can have optional scissor berths for either twin or double configurations
superb family accommodation quite unlike any other 40 foot boat I have seen. The E40 is available in both flybridge and Sedan versions, and each version is available in a choice of two or three cabin layouts. Our test boat was the three cabin Sedan model. At the time of writing I have yet to see the other versions in the flesh, so I will be concentrating on this model, but pointing out the main differences in the layouts as we go through the boat. The forward cabin in this version contains a pair of scissor berths that allow it to be configured either as two single, or a large double. It’s a fairly minimalist space, but good headroom, decent floor space, light materials and plenty of glass make this a welcoming cabin. As well as a fixed window on either side, there is also an opening port and an overhead hatch, Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
so getting a good exchange of air on those rare, hot sticky nights should not be a problem. Aft of the berths there are a pair of cupboard units, a hanging locker to port and a shelved unit to starboard, and there is loads of storage space below the berths accessed via some lift-out hatches. The two-cabin version of the E40 has a large fixed island double in this cabin, but in all other respects appears identical. Moving aft into the lower forward companionway, there are doors off to both port and starboard. To port is the first of
“The E40 has some very unique and clever features. With two layout options it’s also versatile for a family or two couples”
85
The E40 comes with separate forward toilet and shower compartments
the boat’s two toilet compartments. This looks nicely appointed, with good storage in a large cupboard underneath the sink, and another under a lifting section of worktop, excellent headroom and an opening port. The large panel above the worktop opens to reveal this toilet’s holding tank, with access hatch. Dealing with a problem here is never nice, but at least you won’t be crawling around in the bilge at the time.
The forward companionway steps lift to reveal a large storage area and tank access
Opposite the toilet, the second door leads to the starboard side shower room. This offers one big mass of wipe down white GRP with an opening port. For its intended use, I am not sure there is anything you could add to make it better. The only other thing to mention in here is a small lifting seat, which on our boat revealed part of the boat’s heating installation. This meant there was a heating outlet into the shower room which is perfect for keeping it warm and dry, and also means you can use it as a drying room for wet clothes or foulies. To move aft from here you need to ascend a flight of three steps. These steps hinge upwards to reveal a huge ‘cave type’ storage space. You can also gain access to two of the boats tanks in here. Once up these steps, you find yourself in the boat’s wheelhouse/saloon area. Here things start to get a little different. You would normally expect to find the helm in the forward part of this space, with the salon area behind. Bavaria have flipped this on its head and
86
October 2016
The large saloon raised seating area in front of the helm
placed the helm aft, in a central position, with a yacht like binnacle. This might sound weird, and indeed I have to say that on first glance it looks pretty odd too, but do you know what? It actually really works. With all the saloon seating forward of the helm, the skipper is no longer the person up front with his or her back to everyone. They really do become part of the experience and, on a displacement boat, that is particularly important. The saloon is laid out with the seating in a U-shape along the starboard side of the wheelhouse, with the skipper, plus one, seated facing forward on the raised helm seating, three or four seated along the starboard side, and a further passenger seated on the forward section facing aft. A dinette table completes this side of the wheelhouse and creates a fantastically sociable area when underway. The helm binnacle is not the only yacht-like feature. The E40 comes with a large, upright steering wheel that looks like it was supposed to be installed onto the Bavaria yacht that was next on the production line. I paint an odd picture, and if any of this puts you off you just have to go and get onboard yourself. Odd it may Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
be, but once underway it all falls into place perfectly, and you wonder why you haven’t seen something like this before. Despite the limitations on space that this helm design brings, there appears to be nothing missing from spec. Having a single engine does mean you halve the number of instruments you need, and this leaves adequate space for a decent sized multi-function display and somewhere convenient to mount your optional bow and stern thruster controls. In short, it just works. The port side of the wheelhouse is taken up by the L-shaped galley unit, which comes with a nice big sink, a smaller sink/
A yachtlike helm binnacle is situated aft, but the unconventional design works well
87
The large and practical galley comes with good storage and a hidden television
drainer, a double hob, a gas oven and as much storage, in the way of drawers, cupboards and cubby holes, as you have any right to expect. A small panel behind the sink hides a lifting flat screen TV, which should be protected from any spills by being slightly raised from the worktop in front. On this non-flybridge version, the wheelhouse roof has a set of four glass roof lights across the middle of the roof section that allow light to flood into the saloon, and a single opening hatch just above the helm offers additional ventilation to complement the sliding windows on either side. Behind the helm on the port side is the door out into the cockpit, and on a nice day the glass panels behind the helm can be slid open to allow the cockpit and wheelhouse to blend together. Just before the rear door there is a companionway down into a lower lobby area below the helm seat. Here there are four doors, or rather three and a half to be precise. The half height door facing forward offers the main access to the engine room and, with the little Volvo D3
on our test boat, you get plenty of space to get inside and work on or around the engine. One point to make here is that, on our test boat, the prop shaft was slap bang in the middle of the door, which would be somewhat hazardous if spinning. We have been informed that a guard is to be fitted over this in future. The door off to starboard leads into the boat’s second toilet compartment. Again, this is a generous size and combines toilet, sink and shower with a small storage cupboard and opening port. Like the forward toilet compartment, the holding tank is located behind a removable panel above the sink. The two cabin version of the E40 has a single large double cabin aft of this lower lobby area. This offers an island double berth with standing room forward and we assume limited headroom down the sides and over the top of the bed. Our three cabin test boat came with a pair of double berth cabins in this area, again not unlike you may find in a yacht. The cabins are very similar to each other with perhaps just a little less standing headroom in the port
88
October 2016
The E40 can have a single large cabin aft, or two smaller doubles. An aft toilet/shower is standard
side one. Both cabins come with one fixed and one opening hull port and another opening port into the cockpit. They both have under berth storage with a half height hanging/shelved locker in the starboard cabin, and a double low-level locker in the port cabin. Moving out into the cockpit the E40 can accommodate quite a gathering, with seating for up to around eight or more on seats on either side. The starboard U-shaped seat is positioned around a table and a large wheelhouse/flybridge overhang provides a degree of protection in inclement weather. The cockpit can, of course, be fully enclosed with a canvas canopy if required and with this in place, and the partition between cockpit and wheelhouse fully open, you have in the E40 possibly one of the best party boats for its size I have ever seen, regardless of the weather. It may only be rated to take up to 14 passengers when underway, but in port I could imagine you could have 20 onboard, and it would still not feel overly crowded. Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd
The aft section of the cockpit is open, and this allows quick, one-level access to either side deck. It does leave the transom feeling a little exposed and, even with the two safety wires across, you would need to keep a close eye on any little ones onboard to ensure they don’t get too close. At the transom the E40 has another trick up its sleeve, a fold down boarding/bathing platform. With a simple release of a catch, the whole transom folds down to reveal two steps that lead you onto the platform. This is perhaps the easiest way to board the E40 from a pontoon, but does rely on

you having stern access as, not being 700 full width, you can’t really board 1000 from the side onto the platform. If 1250 you need to board from the side, 1500 there are some small moulded steps 2000 on each quarter that are actually 2500 much easier to use than they look. 3000 Access from a high quayside is best 3200 achieved over the aft side decks where Bavaria has provided a safety wire protected break in the guardrails for this purpose. Access forward is easy enough, thanks to the nice large side decks, and safe too, with full length guard rails and a chunky toerail. Once up front you will find a large flat working area, the option for a sunpad on the foredeck and a nice big anchor locker

that should easily swallow up more than enough chain plus a fender or two. Underway The uniqueness of this boat carries through to how it behaves on the water. The hull is basically a sailing boat design, with a short ballasted moulded keel. Onto this keel, another 30cm keel is fixed when the boat is
90
October 2016
The single Volvo Penta D3 150hp engine leaves lots of working space in the engine room
“With the raised helm position aft you have a commanding view” delivered. My understanding of this process is that it helps keep the profile of the boat low for delivery, but also offers an element of sacrificial fibreglass should the boat go aground. The hull certainly shares some yacht characteristics in the way it leans outwards on a turn and is perhaps just a little more susceptible to weight movement onboard than you would expect from a boat of this size. Our boat was fitted with the mid size engine option, a Volvo Penta D3 150hp and delivered a top speed of around 11 knots. With the big single D4 300, Bavaria tell us the E4 will achieve 15 knots, or you can have the single 75hp D2 for a top speed of 8 knots. All engine options are available with hybrid technology Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
that comprises electric motor, generator, batteries and battery charging. The hull is certainly slippy, as shown by how far the boat carried way after power had been taken off, but it does also deliver a fairly wet ride. This is not a problem from the comfort of the wheelhouse, but I suspect the flybridge would not be a place to be in any sort of chop, going on how much spray we managed to get over the windscreen in some fairly benign conditions. Luckily the double pantograph wipers did a good job in preserving that lovely view out. What becomes clear very quickly once you get behind the wheel of the E40, is just how much sense the layout makes. With your slightly raised aft position, you have a commanding view through the
91
large panoramic front window and yet you are also very much part of what is going on with your passengers and crew. The conversations and socialising are happening right in front of you and, when the cockpit is also in use, you’re right in the middle of it all. Noise levels on our test boat were rather intrusive at high speed, due to the lack of soundproofing on the engine room door and the lower lobby area acting as an amplifier. We have been assured that sound proofing levels are going to be beefed up here. Having said that, even without this sound proofing, you only have to drop a few hundred RPM and everything feels much more serene. Yes the D3 will deliver 11 knots, but this boat feels altogether happier at around 7 or 8 knots where sound levels are much lower, and fuel consumption is significantly reduced. In fact, on test, we found that we halved the fuel consumption if we ran at 2500rpm, as opposed to the maximum 3200rpm, but with only a loss of 1.5 knots in speed. With the extra fuel clearly not helping with forward movement, you just have to look out the back to see where your hard earned pounds are going, The wake at or above 3000rpm really is quite large. On the inland
The fold down bathing platform is a good size, but not suitable for boarding from alongside
waterways the E40 with 150hp D3 will run at 5 knots for just 1250rpm, and take you 10 nautical miles for every gallon of diesel. Handling is not dissimilar to a traditional single shaft driven displacement boat. You have a bit of prop walk in reverse, you have little initial steering when you go backwards, but underway the boat tracks straight and true and turns tightly and precisely. The boat is quite slow to respond to small adjustments in helm input, but you just have to learn to make the change and wait a second or two. Conclusion Bavaria promised something revolutionary and on many levels they have delivered.

October 2016
The E40 is not a boat for those that are addicted to speed, but for life in the slower lane, it offers an incredibly spacious and economical package. If you like to cast off with a large group, I can’t think of another boat that would be better to do it on. If you need three separate double cabins in a 40 foot hull, the E40 will do that too. The design may seem more than a little unorthodox, and even getting onboard at a boat show doesn’t really do it justice. What you need to do is cast off the lines and take this boat out, preferably with 8 or more people on board. Do this, and I guarantee you will come away impressed, and even
The semi-displacement hull delivers speeds of up to 15 knots with the largest engine option
the speed freaks among you just might start to see the sense that this boat makes. You are certainly going to like the 4-10mpg that it provides.
