the up in the boating industry, it was the sheer number of new boats that were being launched during the show. Of course, there was a gaggle of GRP loveliness from the likes of Sunseeker, Princess and Fairline, but it was the plethora of new fibreglass at the more affordable end of the market that pleases me so. We can all dream of the day when we might be able to own the new Princess 55, or Fairline Squadron 53, but

there has to be smaller, cheaper boats available to help people onto the first rung of the boating ladder, otherwise how is the next generation ever going to get bitten by the boating bug. This year there seemed to be more choice than ever. We could have filled pages with brand new boats available for under £50k, and have included some of them in our show round-up, but there were two that really stuck out for me. The Sportsfisher 500 is a quality little centre console boat built in Britain by an experienced team of ex Sealine guys, and the Arba 500 is a pocket cruiser that took me right back to the 1976 boat show at Earls Court, when the eight-year-old me first clapped eyes on our family’s future Mayland 14, Water Rat. Somewhere at this show I’d like to think there was an eight year old, whose parents are considering an Arba 500, or one of the many other affordable boats. I say go for it. The memories you create will be with your child when, like me, they are reminiscing over 40 years later.

NEWS Red diesel: Belgium controls remain suspended The Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has announced that boats with red diesel in their tanks can ‘continue to visit Belgium without fear of fines’. On the 26th September it secured confirmation from the Belgian Ministry of Finance that controls in Belgium for red diesel remain suspended until further notice. The association said ‘It remains to be seen what action, if any, the formal report of the meeting of the Indirect Tax Expert Group will reveal, but for the time being at least it appears that boats with red diesel in their tanks can continue to visit Belgium without fear of being fined. As a key stakeholder in this developing situation, we have been assured that the RYA will be notified if the situation in Belgium is to change.’ During the summer cruising months of June and July, numerous fines were issued to UK boats visiting Belgium ports, such as Oostende, for carrying red diesel. In August Belgian customs suspended controls. In its statement, the RYA assured the boating public of its position, ‘Our aim is to ensure that legislators, regulators and other authorities understand, and take account of, our recreational boating activity. By lobbying to retain the lawful use of red diesel by UK boaters, either here in the UK or in Europe, we aim to ensure continuity of supply for UK boaters in the more remote parts of the UK, ensure continuity of supply for UK boaters on the inland waterways and ensure lawful use of duty paid marked diesel for UK boaters in Europe.’ The RYA is still urging anyone who has been fined in Belgium to email boating.abroad@rya.org.uk.

Scam boat and equipment website warning A recent spate of fake marine related websites have been brought to our attention here at Motorboat Owner. These sites are mostly selling high value products, such as new outboard engines, although there is at least one designed to look like a used boat brokerage website. These websites pop up with what appears to be excellent prices for brand new products, or used boats, but usually disappear after just a few weeks. In the meantime, anyone who has placed an order will be left out of pocket, and without the goods they believed they were buying. Editor, Neale Byart explains “The signs to spot these fake websites include, spelling mistakes or the use of poor grammar, a lack of complete contact details, limited payment options, such as bank transfer only with no option to pay by credit card or PayPal, that almost always means no comeback for the purchaser, addresses that do not correspond with the business, terms and conditions, descriptions and images copied from other websites, website domains that were only registered in the last few weeks, despite often claiming years of being in the business, web domains registered in a far flung country, or outfits operating under a limited company name, but which cannot be traced on the companies house website. If you contact them and they show any reluctance in you actually viewing the items they are selling, alarm bells should definitely start ringing. The usual excuse is that they are awaiting stock, or that stock is located elsewhere. These websites are set up to ‘fleece’ as many people as they can, in a short period of time, by offering what appears to be fantastic deals. The old adage that if something appears to be too good to be true, it usually is, is one to heed. If you really think you have found a bargain online and wish to pursue it, we would recommend offering to collect the item in person and pay only when you have the goods in your hand, or insisting that you will only pay with means that offer you some protection, such as a credit card. The best advice of all, is to stick with reputable websites and dealers with a proven track history.” For further advice, the RYA and British Marine have sections detailing the boat buying process on their respective websites. RYA ‘Powerability’ qualification
At the Southampton Boat Show, the RYA and the Wheelyboat Trust were promoting the launch of a new disabled boating certification scheme, Powerability. ‘Powerability is an important milestone in further broadening accessibility, as for the first time disabled people will be able to undertake recognised RYA training and acquire specially developed certification in powerboat skippering.’ Director of The Wheelyboat Trust, Andy Beadsley, said “For people with a disability, it’s not just about getting on and off the boat that’s important but being able to have full control. We’re delighted to be able to support the RYA to roll out”. The Wheelyboat Trust operates its own purpose-built Coulam Wheelyboat V20’s, across several locations and it is hoped the scheme will be rolled out across many more activity centres and Sailability groups in the UK. A new Powerability logbook pictured includes 30 tasks, with Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates available and can be downloaded from the RYA members Online Shop. For details on Powerability visit the RYA website.

RNLI assists sinking 75-foot Sunseeker off Anglesey RNLI Moelfre
The RNLI Moelfre’s all-weather lifeboat crew pulled three men to safety on the 23rd September after their 75ft Sunseeker Predator grounded and started to sink in Moelfre Bay on Anglesey. Holyhead Coastguard received a VHF radio distress call from the grounded vessel at 1pm. The lifeboat was launched and found the vessel aground at Moelfre’s former historic lifeboat station, known locally as Porth Neigwl. The crew reported that it had been taking on water and consequently had lost all engine and electrical power as the engine bay was flooded. The boat was pulled clear of the rocky shoreline and towed out into deeper water, where it was soon apparent the vessel was at considerable risk of sinking, as the pumps were struggling to cope with the water ingress. The three crew members were evacuated to safety whilst the RNLI crew continued to battle to keep it afloat. It was decided that the vessel had sustained too much damage to be towed any considerable distance and too large to be lifted anywhere locally so a decision was made to beach the vessel in Beaumaris, where salvage experts could gain safe access to her. A video and more images of the rescue can be viewed on the RNLI website.

Brixham’s Golden Hind replica for sale The replica of Sir Francis Drake’s Tudor galleon, the Golden Hind, is for sale. The full-size replica of the ship has long been an attraction ‘treasure’ of Brixham Harbour, in Devon and it is reluctantly being sold by its owner, Neil Worrell, after the death of his wife and business partner, Jackie Robinson in January 2017. It is for sale for offers over £399,000 through South West commercial agents, Bettesworths. Bettesworths Director, Stephen Lofthouse says, “This sale represents a unique opportunity to acquire a well-established leisure business in the heart of Brixham. The business is being sold for only the second time in 45 years.” The Golden Hind is the focus of many of Brixham’s annual events, including the annual Pirate Festival in May, as well as the town’s various firework displays. The museum ship has a ‘heavy-duty’ steel hull and was built in 1988 to replace a replica used in the 1960s BBC TV series, Sir Francis Drake, which sank in rough seas. Sir Francis Drake, was the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe from 1577-1580 and, aboard the Golden Hind he claimed victory over the Spanish Armada. Five percent of the sale proceeds will be donated to a charity in memory of Jackie, who died aged 56 from a tumour. Full property details can be found on the Bettesworths website.

Southampton Boat Show 2017 The 49th Yacht Market Southampton Boat Show ended with ‘record numbers’ and ‘exceptional sales reports’. The 10day show is held in September each year at Mayflower Park and features Europe’s largest purpose built marina. According to the show’s host, British Marine, there was a record 106,000 visitors on the water, with many of the 500 exhibitors recording yearon-year increased sales and enquiry leads from last years show. The show also saw many boat and equipment world launches, amongst these debuts were new boats such as the Sealine C430, Hardy 65, Prestige 460 and the Jeanneau NC33. On the
equipment side there was a particularly interesting product launch from British marine safety specialist, Ocean Safety. See Cutting Edge on page 28. On the sunny first day of the show, fashion entrepreneur and TV star, Millie Mackintosh, officially opened the show. Elsewhere in the Solent Park, celebrities Ben Haenow, Suzi Perry and Colin Jackson CBE accompanied company Founder, Robert Braithwaite, in the opening of the Sunseeker stand and launched the British boat builders two new models, the 76 Yacht and revised Predator 57 MKII.

Each day visitors flooded through the entrance at West Quay, keen to explore the massive array of boats, engines, equipment and services spread across the three sections. There were some new attractions this year that seemed to be drawing the crowds, in particular the 20-minute Southampton Water passenger boat trip, which included a very informative historical dialogue by the skipper. The weather for the 10-days remained reasonably dry and sunny, and that ‘rather chilly’ northerly wind had moved round to the west, bringing characteristically autumnal temperatures. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd
There were a few announcements at the show, such as Sunseeker’s partnership with Blue Marine, a charity dedicated to protecting the oceans, and the marina operater, MDL Marinas announced that it has joined forces with boat accommodation website, Beds on Board. British Marine, is now looking to January and to its ‘re-defined and reimagined’, 5-day 2018 London Boat Show, which takes place at ExCel London exhibition centre, from 10th-14th January. The show will have two new sections, Boating & Watersports Holiday Show and Bespoke London.

Nappies sort out a ‘stinky’ mess
The advent of grandchildren has brought many pleasures to our lives, but when they started to grow out of their disposable nappies, we found a new use for them. We started using them to mop up spills in the bilge of our boat. A few strategically placed nappies in the bilge to soak up any spillage and they are particularly useful for jobs like oil changes and cleaning weed filters. Recently we realised just how invaluable these small but wonderfully absorbent items were. For a few days on our boat we had had a whiff of something not very nice. When we investigated below decks we found that the sender cap in the top of the holding tank had come loose and the contents of the tank was oozing out into the bilge. What a mess! Luckily, our holding tank occupies just a small compartment in the bilge, so the mess was contained. Donned with rubber gloves, bucket, black sacks, kitchen roll, disinfectant and a copious supply of nappies we set to work and, within a very short space of time, we had the area ‘spick and span’ again. Sorted! Disposable nappies are now so cheap to buy, particularly the own brand ones, and are invaluable to keep as a standby for little boating emergencies. Ann Clifton Editor replies: I thought my nappy buying days were over, but having read this I think I might stick a pack onboard, just in case.
Boat wiring repairs
Following the letter in your September magazine regarding a circuit board problem. I may be able to help as I have had a similar problem. The circuit board on my Cummins generator broke and I had a very good service from Kays Electronics Ltd based in Ipswich. Instead of paying $500 for parts from the states, I paid £50 plus VAT for a diode, rectifier and relay, and it was repaired in the space of five days. John Naish Editor replies: Thanks John, that is a really useful recommendation. In these days of electronically controlled everything, a reliable company is good to know.

Turning a locker into a fridge
YOU WILL NEED TOOLS
• 21 & 17mm spanners • Drill and drill bits • Sealant gun • 25mm hole cutter • Small spanner for • Screwdrivers fixing bolts
CONSUMABLES
I
t is often an unfortunate fact that many boats simply don’t have enough refrigerator space. This is particularly so on boats with large, outside areas that are used to entertain and socialize with large groups of friends or family. A dedicated drinks fridge on these boats can be a real boon, and can also double your cold storage when undertaking a longer cruise or holiday. If you are lucky enough to be buying your boat new, a cockpit or flybridge fridge is an option worth ticking, but if you are buying on the used market, you are at the mercy of the original purchaser when it comes to these kinds of choices. You can, of course, try to find the exact model of fridge that the builder would have fitted when new, but more
• Double sided tape • Some correctly rated wire • Epoxy resin • Sealant
• Electrical connections • Sealant • A suitable fuse & holder • Insulation material
DIFFICULTY RATING
ooooo often than not they have been replaced with something of a slightly different size, so won’t fit the space where it would have been installed. Maybe your boat didn’t even have the option. If this sounds like a problem you have, then there is another way to increase your cold storage. You could turn one of your cockpit of flybridge lockers into a fridge. We jumped onboard a Sealine T50 where the owner decided to do just this, having already done the same on his previous F37. Here’s how he did it. HOW TO IN 24 STEPS >
36
October 2017
1
The first thing to do is decide which locker you are going to turn into your new coolbox. In this case it was the one below the flybridge galley 4
When you source the kit, you need to find one with a compressor that will fit the space and be powerful enough, and an evaporator plate that fits in the locker 7
Next, we needed to drill a 25mm hole in the locker through which to pass the refrigerant pipes and their connecting nuts
2
You need to get behind, or under, it to fit the kit and also to add insulation. This one was easy, as it was screwed into the galley moulding from the front 5
Temporarily place the compressor unit to make sure that it fits. You will also need to ensure there is a suitable fused power supply, of 15A at 12v, nearby 8
The refrigerant pipes are connected to the evaporator plate and coiled for delivery. Carefully straighten them out by uncoiling them
3
There needs to be some ventilation in the area where the compressor will be mounted, so if there is none, you may need to cut a hole and add a grill 6
The compressor unit can now be fixed in place. Some can be mounted both horizontally and vertically, but check before fixing 9
The pipes are then passed through the locker from inside and the evaporator plate placed loosely inside the locker
Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd

PRACTICAL
10
11
12
Now it is time to fit the thermostat control and temperature sensing wire. Start by drilling a hole to pass the electrical and sensor wire through
Then mark and drill two smaller mounting bolt holes for the thermostat unit, and bolt it in place
The temperature sensing wire is then threaded back into the locker through the hole made earlier for the refrigerant pipes
13
14
15
The temperature sensing wire is now attached to the evaporator plate, ensuring that you mount it as per the instructions
The evaporator plate can now be fixed in place by marking and drilling some mounting holes. This one was fixed to the back wall of the locker
Due to the large size of the hole required for the refrigerant lines, we made up a wooden plate to close it up, while still allowing the wires and pipes to pass through
16
17
18
This was epoxied in place and held in position with tape while we waited for the epoxy to dry
Without insulation, the locker would be a fairly inefficient fridge, so the exterior was first coated with strips of strong double sided tape
3M Thinsulate was then cut to the desired size and shape and affixed to the locker with the double sided tape
38
October 2017
19
20
21
And finally some ‘duct’ style tape was used to close up the joins in the insulation and generally tidy it up
Inside, some white sealant was used to tidy up and fully seal the hole where the wiring and refrigerant pipes came through the locker skin
Before the locker was fixed back into place, the wires from the control panel inside the locker were connected up to the compressor unit, and the power connected
22
23
24
Then the refrigerant pipes could be connected using a pair of spanners. Start by hand, to ensure no cross threading, finish with a final tighten to around 30Nm
The locker unit can be slid back in place and secured into its frame, taking care not to disturb the insulation
The finished article. From locker to coolbox in an afternoon. The inside of the locker door was later upgraded with insulation to improve performance
COST £ This will depend on the unit chosen. The smallest Waeco CU55 units, like the one we installed, are designed for spaces up to 130 litres, and will be suitable for most locker conversions. They come with a choice of oval or flat evaporator plates, the former of which can be used as a freezer compartment. The retail price starts at £580, although the on-the-street price usually provides a good saving on this. Insulation prices vary, but the Thinsulate we used would cost around £50, which means you should be able to complete the job, all in, for under £500. Enquiries Dometic www.dometic.com/en-gb/uk
TIME TAKEN Ours was quite a straightforward install. The locker lining coming out made the job very easy to do and, with a suitable power source close to hand, we had the whole job finished in an afternoon. Allow a day and, if you finish early, you can relax with a cold beer. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

or hundreds of years Southampton has played a vital role in British travel and trade. Located centrally in the Solent, today it is not only a port for ships of all shapes and sizes, it offers numerous boating facilities in very close proximity, and, beyond the waterfront, there is a fascinating city to visit as well.
Southampton is full of history. Initially it was a Roman port, which was then fortified by the Normans, and through the years has been developed into a modern ‘sea city’. An area known as the ‘Old Town’ dates back to the 13th century, with the waters of the River Test once lapping around the west town walls. Wool was

Southampton’s main trade, with many rich merchants living in imposing homes, and today, concealed behind the walls, are many treasured buildings. By the 14th century, Southampton was one of the most important ports in Britain, becoming a centre for shipbuilding and repairs with purpose built docks. However, its importance made it a target for several French raids where much of the town was set ablaze. In 1415 Henry V’s army marched through Southampton to invade France and, in 1620, the Pilgrim
ships, Mayflower and Speedwell departed from Southampton to America. By the Victorian era, Southampton was becoming something of a coastal hub and resort. The Royal Pier, previously known as Victoria pier, was opened by Princess Victoria in 1833 before her accession to the thrown. In the years that followed, a tram system connected the pier to the docks, with ferry services carrying passengers to the Isle of Wight and other south coast ports. erected in 1930. Unfortunately the pier was blighted by rot and a series of fires and now lies derelict. This once iconic and elegant Victorian leisure landmark can now be seen slowly slumping into the sea. The distinctive gatehouse survived and now houses a popular Thai restaurant. The port became an important gateway for travellers arriving and departing Britain, with many new berths built by reclaiming land. On the 11th of April 1912, the famous White Star Olympic
Class liner, the Titanic, departed on its fateful maiden Atlantic voyage from Southampton’s berth number 43. It is said, over 500 of its passengers that perished were Southampton residents. It is also claimed that several White Star crew members ‘missed the boat’ after overstaying at a local hostelry. A lucky escape perhaps. Titanic’s presence in Southampton was described in a local newspaper, the Southern Daily Echo, just days earlier, ‘Her masts and funnels can

Ironically today Southampton’s cruise terminals berth luxury liners nearly five times the size, dwarfing its skyline. Despite growth in trade and travel, Southampton’s waterfront remains dotted with many original imposing historic buildings, including warehouses, wharfs and monuments, each one providing a glimpse into its nautical past. The decorative white building on the corner of Town Quay is the former residence of the Royal Southern Yacht Club, which was opened by its patron, Queen Victoria, in 1846. Many White Star Line passengers stayed at the elegant, South Western House on Canute Road before sailing. Behind this was a station linking the docks to the town centre and London beyond. In the same road, Canute Chambers was once the White Star headquarters. Each year the city plays host to the UK’s biggest boat show. Every September,

Slipways
There is a small public slipway in the northeast corner of Town Quay marina. This block-paved slipway has a moderate slope and is maintained by the marina who keep it clear of weed. As it is relatively short, with a drop off, we would recommend only using it at around high water, ideally on a large, spring tide. It is accessed via Canute Road and there is limited car parking next to the slipway. Contact the marina for more details on 02380 234397. There is a wider slipway at Crosshouse Yard, just north of the Itchen Bridge. For details of more slipways on the Itchen visit the Boat Launch website.

the 10-day Southampton Boat Show sees Mayflower Park at West Quay transformed, with one of Europe’s largest purpose built marinas, accommodating some 300 boats. The first Southampton Boat Show was held in 1969 and in 2018 it will be celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Approaches
The approaches to Southampton Port can be busy with commercial vessels and are monitored by Southampton VTS (Vessel Traffic Services). All boats using, and approaching, Southampton Water are
advised to monitor Southampton VTS VHF 12 for the latest ship movements. Southampton VTS has produced a useful leisure guide to Southampton, which is available via its website. Southampton is located at the top of Southampton Water, a 6-mile long, 1-mile wide stretch of water, that leads northwest from the central Solent. The large, well-marked, triangular-shaped sandbank, Bramble Bank, lies at the entrance to Southampton Water and there are channels around this. Larger shipping, bound for the oil terminal jetties and

the Port of Southampton, use the deep Western Approach Channel, known as Thorn Channel. This route is also used by the Red Funnel fast ferry ‘Red Jet’, and slow car ferries from Southampton to Cowes on the Isle of Wight. Be aware that the 35-knot Red Jet may take a more direct route, cutting inside of the West Bramble north cardinal when the depth permits. Leisure vessels may use this channel, albeit buoy hopping and keeping to the very edges, but must keep a good look out for, and stay well clear of, any large commercial traffic. It is important to remember, these vessels are not only constrained by their draught, they are also restricted in their visibility and maneuverability. For those approaching from the east, the North Channel provides a sparsely marked, but useful route northwest, between Bramble Bank and the shallows off the eastern shoreline. The chimney at the Fawley Power Station will be visible from miles around and provides a useful landmark for this route. On passing the low-level peninsular at Calshot, with its wartime radar tower, to starboard is the well-marked entrance channel to the River Hamble. After this, commercial jetties protrude out from each shoreline, often occupied by large tankers. These jetties are well marked and

Outboard fresh water cooling
Q Is it possible to fit a fresh water cooling system to an outboard motor? The
motivation is waste heat recovery. Does it depend on the type/make/size of outboard? I’m not a boat owner at the moment but I intend to buy a four-berth cruiser about 28 feet long such as a Shetland?
A While I suppose it could be technically possible to convert an outboard
to have a heat exchanger and an enclosed cooling system, I think it would be somewhat impractical. Firstly, there would be nowhere under the hood to fit the equipment, and secondly, you would need to install a separate water pump to circulate the enclosed coolant and somehow seal off the engine cooling system and redirect the raw water to the heat exchanger. If you wanted to recover some waste heat from the engine, it may be slightly more practical, although again not without some serious thought and modifications, to take off raw water from the engine and pass it through a calorifier or air blown heater (assuming these items will cope with salt water if based on the coast). The spent raw water does certainly get quite hot, although not as hot as the water in an enclosed system. Personally I think the idea is probably a non-starter, unless you are the type that likes a serious challenge and have a solid engineering background. There would also be problems, no doubt, with engine warranty etc. If you do crack it though, I am sure there would be a market for a well-designed and practical product. 52

Can I legally tow a Bayliner 2556?
Q I have fallen in love with a 1994
Bayliner 2556, which is currently stored in a boatyard on a trailer. I am getting conflicting advice about whether this could be legally towed on the road, with some saying it is too big or too heavy. I have held my licence since the early 80’s, so I don’t need a separate towing test, and have a Land Rover Discovery, which has a maximum towing weight of 3500kg, but the more I look into towing laws, the more confused I become.
A With your licence, you can tow up to the cars maximum 3500kg. The
maximum width of boat allowed is 2.9m, but the trailer must be no more than 2.55m. The length of the boat is less of a problem, as typically they become too heavy before length is an issue. The 2556 is 9ft 6in (2.9m) wide, so bang on the maximum width limit. The trouble you will have is with the weight. The specs indicate a weight of 2581kg, but this will be completely empty of any kit, optional extras or any fuel. Realistically, the weight, even lightly loaded with minimal fuel, is more likely to be 3000kg. It is possible to find a 3500kg rated trailer that weighs under 500kg, you will need to source an aluminium one, but it’s all going to be very close. You then have to deal with the practicalities of towing, launching and recovering a boat of this size, which will seem huge when it is on the road. In short, it may be possible, just, but it may not be very practical.

Sealine F37 engines
Q I have decided that my next
boat, when I have sold my current one, will be a Sealine F37. What I haven’t decided yet is what engines to go for. It seems that these boats are fitted with KAMD43, 44 and 300 options offering 230, 260 and 285hp. Obviously the bigger engine ones seem more expensive, but is the extra power worth paying for?
A Firstly the F37 is an excellent choice. I have had quite a bit of experience
helming these and have always been impressed by their handling. You may not have come across one yet, but they also offered Volvo Penta 300hp D4 engines in the latter part of the production run. While these newer engines will offer refinement, economy and power that you won’t get from the previous generation, there is much to be said for the simplicity, and ease of maintenance/fault finding that you get with the KAMD range. The 285hp KAMD300’s were fitted later than the other two, which explains why these boats are typically more expensive. With a pair of KAMD300’s, the F37 will top 30 knots, and so probably offers the best compromise between cost, performance and simplicity. Having said that, even with the 230hp KAMD43’s, the F37 will achieve a top speed in the high 20’s, and you get the extra simplicity of just two valves per cylinder and a less rigorous maintenance regime for the top end. For me it comes down to these two choices. KAMD43’s for affordability and simplicity, or KAMD300’s for performance. Ultimately though, I would be happy with any of the engine options fitted, and would look to buy an F37 on price, condition and good maintenance rather than engine choice. 54

Trailer hub maintenance
Q When I launch my fishing boat I don’t seem able to do so without dunking
the whole trailer, and most importantly, the wheels and hubs, into the salt water. The result seems to be that the wheels seize up regularly, even though I park it up with the handbrake off. I have been advised not to dunk the wheels in beyond the rubber, but I can’t see how this is practical. Surely I am not the only one with this problem. What do others do?
A In an ideal world, it would be great if we could keep the trailer hubs dry, but many slipways are so shallow that I have even had to get the back wheels of the car wet before I could launch the boat. Break back trailers used to be popular, but you don’t see many around anymore, despite their ability to help with this. Unless the slipway is steep, the boat fairly light, and the trailer equipped with copious rollers, I don’t think it is possible to avoid getting your hubs wet, so you need to plan to minimize the problems caused by salt water. Firstly, always allow the hubs to cool down before dunking. This should help keep the bearings in good condition. You could also add one of the proprietary bearing protection systems, such as Bearing Buddies, to help keep the water out. What you are probably experiencing is the brake shoes seizing onto the drum. The best thing you can do to prevent this is to flush the drum with fresh water after each dunking. The easiest way to do this is to fit a fresh water flushing system that allows you to hook up a hose to some pipe work connected to each drum. Western Towing offer a cost effective kit that should pay for itself in reduced maintenance bills in no time.

Beaves Marine
Q This is a picture of
my Beaves Marine 24 that I have owned for 5 years now. She has an SSR registration but I have been unable to get any more information about her, except that Beaves Marine are no longer operating. I would love to know how many of these boats were made (I only know of one other that I saw advertised for sale). She is a lovely boat and suits me, and although she is not big, I have a shower onboard, hot and cold water, electric toilet, microwave, hob and grill, shore power, inverter and the aft cabin is surprisingly roomy. Any information you could give me about these boats would be really helpful. She is powered by a Perkins 4108 diesel.
A Beaves Marine were one of the many prolific builders of small boats that were based in Essex, Tollesbury in this case. They were building boats from around 1974, right through until the early 1990’s and they mainly sold mouldings for other companies, or individuals, to fit out. It looks to me like your Beaves Marine 24 is actually a Beaves Marine 22, a boat that was also produced using Beaves Marine mouldings by Dolphin and sold as the Dolphin 22 Aft Cabin. Although there are quite a few of your 22 ft aft cabin model out there, the exact fit-out design and finish will no doubt vary from boat to boat, depending upon who finished the build and whether they were professional or DIY. Our archives are devoid of any information on Beaves Marine, but I understand that the company continued fibreglass moulding after they stopped boat building, although these mouldings were not marine related. They may even still be going under a new name, but Beaves Marine Ltd is now dissolved. Tony Beaves, who would now be in his 80’s, seems to have retained connections with Tollesbury, with mentions of him in the area as recently as 2012.

ounded during the reign of Queen Victoria, Broom Boats is arguably the oldest longstanding motorboat builders in the UK. It is a brand that today is recognised for its quality aft cabin cruisers, many of which are just as much at home at sea as on inland waterways. This month we stepped aboard what is possibly one of its most radical designs from the 1980’s. The Broom 10-70 Sceptre. The 10-70 made its debut at the London Boat Show held at Earls Court in January 1984. It was designed by John Bennett, a naval architect who was responsible for many of the early Broom models, but
also many Princess models during the 70’s and 80’s. The model name refers to the boats metric length of 10.7 metres, and it was to be the replacement for the popular aft cabin 35 European, which was built between 1973-1983. In fact the 10-70 shared the same Bennett ‘Y hull’ design used on the European’s semi-displacement flybridge sister model, the 35 Sedan. While the 10-70’s 4-6 berth layout echoed that of the European, it was completely different in terms of styling. The chunky rectangular windows had vanished, revealing sharper, sportier and an altogether more modern exterior. With its angular, raked windows,

metal stripe window corner detailing, statement areas of blue gelcoat, sloping foredeck and forward raked radar arch, similar to that seen on sportscruisers of the time, it looked poised and faster than its siblings. Broom added a hinging radar arch and a folding windscreen to attract UK boaters wanting explore European inland waterways, as well as overseas buyers, particularly from Holland. Finally, larger engines brought more versatility and speeds of up to 23 knots. In 1984, Broom introduced a compact sister model, the 9-70. This used a shortened version of Bennett’s 10-70 hull
and the superstructure of the Broom 32 by Andrew Wolstenholme, the designer later responsible for the 33 and Ocean range. Broom Boats told Motorboat Owner that 30 10-70’s were built at its factory in Brundall, in Norfolk, over the sevenyear production period between 19831989. During this time, examples were also commissioned by charter companies in cruising areas such as Ireland, and the Caledonian Canal in Scotland. These particular boats were built by Aquafibre and fitted-out ‘in house’ by the charter companies themselves. It is also documented that Martin Broom himself

owned a 10-70, which was commissioned in 1988. The 10-70 ceased production in 1989 and was replaced a few years later by the planing-hulled Broom 36, built 19921996. Today, the 10-70 still has an excellent following, with many enthusiastic, longterm owners. In the late 80’s, this model was priced from £92k. Typically, now these boats sell for £50-£70k, so they have certainly held their value. Could
this be a testament to this boats level of accommodation, value and performance? We set out to find out more. Interior The 10-70 offers berths for four to six people, with two separate cabins and a convertible saloon area. Gone is the side door seen on the European in favour of more saloon seating, so sole access to the main cabin area is via the raised aft deck

A slightly off-centre spiral staircase leads down into the saloon and continues down to the aft cabin
and an off-centre, transparent, sliding companionway door. A spiral staircase leads down to the saloon level and this continues on down into the aft cabin. The bright and airy saloon feels spacious and inviting. Here you can see Broom’s carpentry skills at their best, with an abundance of wood, with exquisitely matched grains running horizontally and vertically. Most examples are finished in dark rich satin-varnished mahogany, which is both classic and classy. A few rare examples were fitted out in teak, which is traditional-looking and brings a lighter, brighter feel to the interior. The wood surfaces will need some maintenance and protection from the sun during ownership, so it is wise to ensure that it is all in good order. It is especially worth examining the surfaces below windows for evidence of leaks and water damage. The large windows throw plenty of light into the saloon and there are two large slide-
opening panes each side. These not only provide great ventilation, they are also ideal for passing bags or shopping through into the cabin from the pontoon. Check for growth around the seals and sliders, which may cause leaks into the boat. What you will notice, when you step onboard, is the generous headroom throughout. Those of 6ft stature will not be disappointed. The saloon area is particularly impressive with 6ft 4in headroom. It is also a fabulous space for entertaining. To starboard is a rather long U-shaped settee capable of seating six people, possibly more, comfortably. An adjustable height folding table sits in front, and acts as a coffee or dining table. The forward section of the settee has three loose seat and storage bases, each one can be moved out and positioned on the port side of the table, which is a very useful feature for family dining. These three boxes can also be used to convert the

settee into a double berth. An additional saloon ‘tub’ chair is also common on Brooms of this era, which is useful for social occasions. There are also two large lift and pull-out storage drawers under the main section of settee.
Most 10-70’s will have an inside helm position, which is useful. Visibility aft is restricted
On the port side, a sideboard unit with a fiddled top incorporates various lockers and drawers for storage. If the boat has an inside helm position, a fold-out helm seat bolts onto this unit. The binnaclelike helm console is practical and unencroaching, with simple angled dash and switch panels, and a vertical metal steering wheel. With no space on the dash, navigation equipment will need to be bracket mounted on top or to the side of the helm unit. You will usually find a builder’s plate at the inner helm. Moving forward and down two steps, there is a U-shaped galley to starboard. Early boats normally have a whiteveneered galley area, while later models will often have white worktops and the same interior wood flowing across the surrounding surfaces. The galley has a double sink, a three/four burner gas hob and oven, a decent-size fridge, and plenty of cupboard storage, including a large shelved locker under the worktop. A microwave can be fitted on a shelf above the hob and, to the right of this, there is often a gas water heater. With cupboards in the galley mostly utilised for crockery, pots, pans, cups and glasses,

V-berths in the second cabin are a good option for a family. Some boats may have a double infill
this leaves very little space for food storage for extended cruising. Owners may need to utilise storage elsewhere, and for this the galley companionway steps are particularly useful. The forward guest cabin offers 6ft 2in headroom and has a very traditional, yet practical, V-berth configuration, which is particularly useful for families, or for when the grandkids come to stay. Each berth measures a very generous 6ft 6in and, for overnighting couples, there may well be a double infill. Lift the curtains in this cabin to check for evidence of leaks. Mildew could feature on curtains and surrounding surfaces here, and is usually caused by condensation build-up. We noted that you cannot have this

The aft cabin master is comfortable and well appointed for those longer stays afloat
It is a spacious and comfortable master cabin with ample floor area and headroom to dress, with a good size ensuite toilet and shower compartment to starboard. The tapered double berth measures 6ft 5in in length and 4ft 6in wide. Beneath this is the boat’s 80-gallon water tank. To starboard of the bed there is a mirrored dresser vanity unit, with lockers and drawers below. To port, there is another spacious sideboard with drawers below. On this side you will also find a full height hanging locker, which narrows towards the bottom, following the hull shape. Inside the generous ensuite toilet compartment there is good headroom (5ft 11in) and plenty of floor space to shower within the confines of a shower curtain. Almost identical to the day loo, there is a sea toilet, a separate shower control and a moulded worktop incorporating a wash basin sink unit, with an integral storage The good-sized master ensuite toilet has a shower locker below it. cabin’s small sash style windows open for ventilation if it is raining outside. Opposite the galley, on the port side, you will find a toilet compartment, or day loo. Originally this did not have a shower. However, there is certainly space for it and some owners may since have added this. In the aft cabin, you will see the biggest transformations from its European predecessor. Here Broom replaced the traditional L-shape twin berth configuration with a central island double.

If you are looking to cruise distances, heating, holding tanks and a generator are very useful features to look for. A Zeis 4kW generator at £4200, Eberspacher heating £1365 and a holding tank at £570 were in-build optional extras. Lack of accessible tools/spares storage is a criticism of some owners. The open voids in the companionway stairs are useful for storing smaller boxed items. Aft Deck & Helm Out on the raised aft deck there is a double helm seat to starboard, with a single pilot seat on the port side, both of which have reversible bolsters for socialising while at rest. The helm seat doubles as a two-gascylinder locker, while the pilot seat base provides useful deck storage. Directly aft of the pilot seat, and built into the aft deck moulding, is the aft cabin escape hatch. This could be a trip or toe-stubbing hazard. The helm position is sheltered by the large-panelled windscreen, which offers surprisingly good visibility while seated undercover. A large steering wheel dominates the relatively simple, but welllaid-out, helm console. On these models, the VHF radio is usually inconveniently mounted on the roof bulkhead inside the

stairwell of the saloon. The aft deck area is enclosed by guardrails, usually with vinyl dodgers that traditionally carry the boat’s name. Here, there is seating for four more people, in the form of two wooden slatted bench seats each side of the transom gate. There is also a bathing ladder, the framework for which integrates into the aft deck guardrail. Later, or owner-modified, examples may well have moulded lockers

There is storage under the versatile cockpit seating, with a gas locker under the double helm seat
in place of the bench seats, giving necessary extra deck storage. When it comes to bridge clearance, the standard raked radar arch on the 10-70, a cylindrical ‘tube’, stainless steel hoop with light mast top and aerials, hinges aft to provide an air draft of 10ft 10in (3.30m). An optional upright ‘double tube’ arch carried a radar dome if specified. Owners since may have installed hydraulic gas struts to make ‘dropping’ the arch easier. The 10-70 has folding windscreens as
standard, and this brings its air draft down to 9ft 4in (2.84m). An optional outboard engine crane and mounting bracket were welded into the transom guardrails, both are extremely useful for lifting outboards up the steep transom and for storage. But be aware, with the radar arch lowered, the top of the crane becomes the next highest point above the windscreen. Ensure that the canopy is serviceable. Two types of canopies will usually be seen on this boat, partially or fully enclosing
There were two types of hinging arch available on the 10-70, a single or double ‘tube’ structure 66

Incredibly wide side decks and centre access make it excellent for crewing
the aft deck. The former sees the canopy fall vertically from a hoop frame enclosing the helm and co-pilot seating. The latter, with its larger framework, creates a useful conservatory-like area on the aft deck. Depending on the arch and canopy design, all, some or none of the canvas may need to come down in order to lower the arch, so this is something worth investigating. On Deck These boats are easily managed by two people and have excellent side decks for crewing. Moulded steps each side lead down from the aft deck onto the wide side decks. These average 13 inches in width, they have a chunky toerail and taper off at the bow where they meet with the wide, raised sloping foredeck. Boarding is via a centre chained gate each side. For easier boarding from low banks, owners may have fitted a folding metal step to the hull, or use a fender step. The engine vents may also have been modified to incorporate a step. The side decks are moderately high but certainly not as high as those on other aft cabin boats of the era. With no exterior wood detailing, exterior maintenance is fairly minimal.
However, the sections of coloured gelcoat in the superstructure, usually dark blue, will need to be maintained with a regular polish. Be aware that these may have been painted, so ensure the finish is satisfactory. Bathing platforms with heavy duty teak slats were fitted either side of the transom/bathing ladder as a £750 extra. If fitted, ensure that these are in good order as they can rot if untreated and left to the elements. Davits were also a popular optional extra on this model. Hull and Handling The 10-70 has a semi-displacement hull, which provides good inland and coastal abilities. It also delivers Broom’s renowned, well-mannered handling, whether it be at fast or slow speeds. The hull produces low wake, and a fairly deep keel allows it to track in a straight line at slow speeds, both essential points for use on inland waterways. At sea, the hull delivers planing speeds with its fairly sharp bow entry and sprayrails pushing the water aside. Being quite ‘stern-heavy’, adjustable trim tabs or hull extensions were often added to coast-bound models to help generate lift at the stern.

Engines The 10-70 is usually fitted with twin Volvo Penta shaftdrive diesels ranging from 100hp to 200hp. The most common is a pair of 150hp TMD41A’s which, when it was new, provided a top speed of 21 knots. In 1988, the standard engine option listed was twin 100hp TMD31’s priced at £94,300, giving a 15-knot top speed. The next option listed is 130hp TAMD31’s priced at £96,312, giving 20 knots. Top of the range was a boat fitted with a pair of 150hp TMD41’s which was priced from £97,830 and capable of 23 knots. By the late 80’s Broom was offering 200hp TAMD41’s giving a top speed of 24 knots. Today, boats fitted with the 130hp’s, should achieve cruising speeds in the region of 14 knots and a top speed of
Val Wyatt Marine & Broom Boats
The 10-70 does not particularly like following seas, as it has a tendency to wallow, but security comes from a moderately-high freeboard. Overall they are very able cruisers and will provide reassuring seakeeping should conditions change.
It has a capable semi-displacement hull, which, depending on engines, gives up to 23 knots
approximately 18 knots. With the larger 150hp engines we should expect a 20 knot top speed and a cruising speed of around 16 knots. 200hp boats should still be able to achieve 20 knots+, with cruising speeds in the region of 18-20 knots. The boats two 80-gallon stainless steel fuel tanks are located aft of the engine bay, and forward of aft cabin bulkhead, which is quite unusual for this style of aft cabin boat, as you would normally expect to find these lower down and outboard of each engine. Access is via hatches under the aft A pair of twin Volvo Penta TMD41A’s were common, pictured here fitted to a 1988 example

section of the U-shaped saloon seating. The two fuel fillers are together on the starboard side, close to the aft deck steps. Engine access is via a series of metal framed hatches in the saloon floor. The two larger hatches reveal each engine and its main visual inspection points, the header tanks, belts and oil dipstick. Two smaller aft hatches conceal the raw water strainers, a manual bilge pump and access to the batteries. For servicing you can roll back the carpet and remove sections of the panelled floor. However, access to the starboard engine is still restricted by the saloon seating. The Volvo Penta engines fitted are well regarded, and easy to work on, with good availability of parts. When it comes to running costs, at fast cruising speeds you should expect around 1nmpg. Like many aft cabin Broom models, you will find a large detachable section in the coachroof that may be used for engine removal if necessary. Re-engining is fairly
rare, although we have encountered a 1989 example that was re-engined in 2007 with twin 200hp T4-390 Nanni diesels. Ensure that the engines have been regularly serviced. At river speeds, 10-70’s with their original Volvo engines may leave a light trail of black/grey smoke behind. This is not normally anything to be alarmed by, and can usually be reduced by giving the engine a bit of a ‘workout’ at sea. If the smoke is blue or white, further investigation may be needed. Conclusion Whether it is for a family or a couple, for cruising inland or at sea, the 1070 may be dated but it is still a very versatile, easy to handle, comfortable and good value aft cabin cruiser. Be warned though, Broom ownership gets into the blood, and once you join the club, it becomes very difficult to leave.
Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a IIMS or a YDSA accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

tested Teak Protection product test If you have real teak decks on your boat you will probably go through the routine of cleaning them, protecting them, watching them gradually fade to grey or turn green before cleaning them again. There have been plenty of tests of products to bring grey and dirty teak back to its luscious golden colour, but few tests of the products that claim to keep it that way. We decided it was time to put that right and back in the spring gathered together examples of all of the teak protection products we could find on the market at that time. The aim was to treat some nice clean teak just once, as per the
instructions, and see which product kept it looking good for longest. Not having any real wood decks, we approached our friends at Marine Teak and asked if we could use one of their tables as our test bed. With seven products to test, it was perhaps fortunate that the table had 14 planks inlaid into a frame. This would allow us to treat two planks per product and leave the outer frame untreated as a control panel. The table was treated in the spring and left outside until the autumn.

Each of the seven products were applied to the teak table exactly as per the instructions.
It was subject to an almost complete range of climates, from frost early on, through to direct, strong sunlight in the middle and torrential downpours at the end. The test was conducted away from the coast, so is perhaps more akin to an inland waterways environment. As one supplier
pointed out, the salty atmosphere of the coast may show different results. Almost all of the products tested pointed out the requirement to have a clean, dry, dust and dirt free surface before starting.

The Semco, being natural, did as it promised and left the teak pretty much exactly the same colour as our control area. The Just Teak product dried to provide a very obvious milky translucent barrier. It wasn’t a very natural look, but as a sealer, it did the job. Of the rest, there was a mix of shades and colours, but to my mind, and it is very subjective, the teak oils delivered possibly the nicest tone. A month in and all the treated areas

After five months The table is looking rather sorry for itself. Many of the panels are actually looking grubbier than the untreated control areas. It is almost like the products attract the dirt as they degrade. On a positive note, the Semco treated area still looks pretty clean and, although it is still difficult to tell it apart from the untreated area, it does appear to have offered some protection and is still looking natural, without the

Marine A Glaze Teak Protector V2
This water based product is easy to apply. You simply shake and stir and then apply a thin coat onto the wood using a soft, dust-free cloth. After 30 minutes of drying time, a second coat is applied in the same way. Application should be undertaken between 5°C and 30°C and treatment is recommended at least once a year. The product is very runny, so a little goes a long way making it quite cost effective. The downside is that it is easy to overspill onto areas not intended to be treated. www.marineaglaze.com

Starbrite Tropical Teak Oil Sealer
This product is available in Natural Light or Classic Teak, we chose the former. The product requires stirring or shaking before application with a foam brush in the direction of the wood grain. The instructions suggest one or two coats, we used two, and advises that it should be reapplied once the original coat starts fading after a “prolonged period of time”. The sealer was considerably thicker than most of the others and had the look and consistency of modern fence treatments. Although thick, the product did spread a long way when applied with a foam brush. www.starbrite.com

Teak oil is the old favourite, and we had two different brands on test. The international one requires one or two coats using a soft brush or cloth and recommends repeating during the season “if required”. The oil is very runny, so a little goes a very long way. We applied two coats with a brush, allowing 30 minutes in between, and the bottle still appears full. One thing you get with this teak oil is that nice boaty teak oil smell. Semco Teak Sealer
Semco is available in either natural or Honeytone colours. The former will leave the teak uncoloured, while the latter will provide a golden colouration to the wood. We used the natural one. After mixing, application is advised with a foam brush, rubbing it into the grain with a cloth like a stain, with two coats required, one straight after the other. Recoating is suggested at “ seasonal intervals” with a recommendation to do so once water stops beading on the surface. Jotun Yachting Teak Oil
Our second teak oil was, perhaps, even thinner than the first. This meant that it crept under our masking tape, which is something to watch out for. Interestingly, it didn’t have that typical teak oil smell, having a more chemical aroma. The instructions said to apply one coat by brush, wait 15 minutes and then wipe off any excess with a dry clean cloth, and then apply a second coat after one hour if needed. Jotun Yachting Teak Sealer
A water based sealer that is said to provide a waxy surface to protect against water and stains as well as prevent drying and cracking. This product requires a single application, with a brush or roller, until the wood is completely saturated. It is then left for 30 minutes before wiping off any excess with a clean rag. Jotun Teak Sealer is quite thick, with a consistency like car polish, making it a little easier to control and less likelihood of it finding its way onto unintended areas.
Conclusion If you are happy to be tinkering with your teak on a regular basis, teak oil, and in particular the International Teak oil, provides a nice finish and a lovely oily smell. It’s cheap and it goes a long way, making it very cost effective, even if high maintenance. If you want the most natural look to your teak, while still providing it with some protection, then Semco natural is certainly worth considering. The teak will still grey with time, but seems to stay just a little cleaner than the untreated wood. For a product that delivers a long lasting and even toned colour, there can only be one winner. Marine A Glaze Teak Protector might give a slightly darker finish than we would like, but there is no denying that it still looks good even after five months of sun, wind, rain and even bird poo.

PROJECT BOAT
PROJECT Fairline Vixen
W
ith the Southampton Boat Show taking up over a third of the month, there has been little time over the last few weeks to achieve much with our project boat. Having said that, a little progress has been made with the engine. At the end of last month we had stripped the top end of the engine down and found that, despite its outward appearance, the internals were looking reasonably good. What I needed to do next was to check the bottom end, where any water that had found its way inside, would have been sitting. At some point the sump had been completely immersed in bilge water for an indeterminate amount of time and, if there was any weakness in
the sump gasket, some of that water may have found itself inside. When the oil was drained, things initially looked promising, the oil was still black, although it did have a slightly gloopy consistency. To work easily on the bottom end, I decided that I needed an engine stand. We are not working to a budget on this project, but still need to watch the pennies so that we don’t end up with the world’s most expensive Fairline Vixen. With that in mind, I sourced a good used engine stand, fixed the engine in place using the bellhousing fixings and bolts, spun the engine upside down and started work on removing the sump. Once all bolts were out, and the sump

removed, things were not quite as good as I had hoped. The sump was filled with thick black sludge, which can easily be cleaned, but the counterweights and webs of the crankshaft were displaying lots of gritty surface rust. In a bit of a panic, I quickly removed a couple of the con rod big end bearing caps, and crankshaft bearing caps, to see what condition the bearings and, more importantly, the journals of the crankshaft were in. If they were corroded, things were going to get more complex and expensive. Luckily, they appear to be in very good condition, so although I am going to have to now strip the engine down further than I was hoping, to clean the internals, things are still looking positive. In fact, this may be a blessing in disguise as I was unsure whether, as a precaution, I should remove the pistons to check the piston rings, and whether I should be changing items such as the crankshaft
seals. This setback removes any reason not to do these jobs. In preparation for this strip down, the crankshaft pulley was removed using a puller, after an epic battle

With the sump removed, some surface rust was evident on the webs and counterweights of the crankshaft. Luckily, the bearings and bearing surfaces appear to have escaped unscathed
with the nut that was holding it on that required about four foot of extension bars before budging. The oil pump was then unbolted to gain full access to the crankshaft, which will be removed and cleaned up next month. In the meantime, I will order a bottom end overhaul kit of gaskets and seals and, after researching engine painting options this month, I am going to be ordering up some paint and painting kit, so that once I start reassembling I can clean and paint the parts as I go.

uying a boat is a process that involves the heart, just as much as the head. Yes, of course you need a boat that is practical, and of course it needs to fit your budget, but equally it must make you fall in love. It needs to make you smile as you walk down the pontoon towards it, it needs to beckon you to take it out for a spin, even when you really have more important things to do. In short, you should desire it. In my mind, the DaVinci 30 does just this. If you visited the Southampton Boat Show and wandered along the pontoons, there is a very good chance the DaVinci 30 stopped you in your tracks, if only to ask “what is that”? The answer, it turns
out, is it can be almost anything you want it to be. The DaVinci is very much a semi-custom built product, with a range of options designed to offer the owner exactly the kind of boat that fits their needs. This is not limited to fit-out and finish either. If you want your DaVinci 30 to be a gentleman’s river cruiser, you could
84

“Customisable, classical elegance, with a choice of eight power options. What is not to like?” opt for a small single shaftdrive engine installation. If you want an economical coastal boat, you could opt for the single sterndrive, as fitted to the boat show model. If, however you want a fast offshore capable boat, that can even pull a waterskier or two, go for the twin sterndrive option. With a choice of hull colours and a semi-custom approach to boat building, the chances of finding two identical boats is very small indeed. but the company has been building boats in the Netherlands since it was set up in 2001. Since then, and the initial 29 model, DaVinci has expanded the range and now produces 10 models up to 40 foot, six in the classic range and four, including the 30, in the Dynamic range. Down in the cabin, the DaVinci 30 is, as standard, a two berth boat. There is no fixed berth, or separate cabin, you get a large round dinette that looks suitable to sit at least four or six for dinner, with a

table that drops to create the boat’s double berth. If you want your 30 to have four berths, there is an option for you that involves having a permanently raised double berth in the bow, with a pair of pilot berths below, on either side. With the dinette version, as we tested, you get some storage below the dinette seating, a pair of small cupboards on the forward bulkhead and an open locker behind the aft starboard dinette seating. Also on the starboard side, just aft of the dinette, there is a single half height storage locker. All of the interior woodwork appears to be finely crafted, with a range of finishes available. Our test boat was finished in a satin light oak, while the boat show example was resplendent in high gloss dark mahogany, but there are bamboo and teak options, as
well as two-tone finishes. Moving aft further and you have the boats toilet compartment to starboard and galley to port. Headroom in the cabin, and hence the galley, is very good at around 6ft. The Dutch are, after all, the tallest nation on earth. Having said that, they must all use the toilet sitting down, because even this height-challenged Englishmen found the headroom a little tight in the toilet compartment, at around 5ft 6in. Other than that, the toilet is well appointed with all the basics, although some protection for the lovely woodwork will surely be needed before taking a shower in here. At the galley, the standard fit appears to offer a single deep sink and a diesel fired ceramic two-burner hob. Such is the

companies desire to create the boat that “Normally a two-berth boat, you want, I would imagine any requests DaVinci offer an ingenious, for upgrades here, in the shape of a second sink or a four burner hob, or a differently four-berth solution powered hob, would be met with an for families” agreeable nod. Storage in the galley is good, thanks mainly to mounting the to access some more storage above and fridge in the cockpit. You get two goodsized cupboards and three drawers below behind. wood, the interior of the 30 never felt gloomy, thanks to there still being large amounts of shiny white surfaces, an overhead hatch, and no fewer than five opening ports, plus another one in the toilet compartment. Moving between cabin and cockpit means negotiating a couple of offset steps and a smoked plastic sliding companionway door. While the cabin is

clearly best suited to two, the cockpit is a whole different ballgame. If you like to entertain during the day, but cosy up together at night alone, the DaVinci 30 is almost perfectly laid out for you. The cockpit/cabin split is around 50/50 and the cockpit itself is further split 30/70 fore and aft. The large aft section delivers a great U-shaped seating area around a table. The table on the two boats I have been on is clearly not designed for large group dinners, but will take drinks and nibbles for the six to eight people that you could easily seat in this area or, once your guests have departed, easily accommodate a more intimate group for an al-fresco meal. Just forward of the aft cockpit seating are boarding points over both port and starboard sides. These small two step boxes not only offer an easy way to board, but they conceal a huge locker below that is more than capable of storing a whole set of fenders and ropes. The steps themselves

are held open by twin gas struts when in use, which adds to their safety as well as ease of use. Moving forward to the helm area and the choices for a potential purchaser goes into overdrive. Starting with the navigator’s seat on the port side, our test boat, and the one at the show, were both fitted with a comfortable single bucket
seat, with lifting bolster, on top of a fibreglass box moulding that house the boat’s refrigerator. There is a comfortable foot rest provided, for what is quite a tall seat, and you get some open storage in the coaming alongside. In front, there is a small, lipped storage area that naturally seems to double as a grab rail, and a flat area for charts/books etc. There is a

wide choice of seat you can opt for here, including a classic wooden ribbed type that enhances the pseudo-classic look of this boat. If you prefer, this whole area can be converted into an upper galley unit that can be equipped with a sink, hob, oven and fridge. I guess this can be as well as, or in place of, the lower galley, depending upon your preferences. The upper galley can be equipped with a cushion on top when not in use, but this is not really going to be very comfortable as somewhere to sit when underway. At the helm, you get similar options. You can have the single wooden slated seat, you can opt for a twin bucket seat with lifting bolsters or you can have a twin bench seat with flappable backrest

to allow the helm to be turned into an aft facing seat. The Southampton boat had the twin bucket seat, but it was fitted onto twin pedestals. Our test boat had the same fore and aft adjustable seat, but this time installed onto another GRP moulded box into which the boat had a second fridge or freezer unit installed. Again, you get a footrest, this time a double length one, and a nice commanding seated position. The helm is elegantly simply, with an upright

“With the twin Volvo 170’s, sensible and sedate quickly transforms into sportsboat sensation” steering wheel, and a minimalist approach to instruments and switches. The multifunction display, or two if you opt for them, are installed with digital switching for many boat systems, which can be controlled remotely from an app on your phone or tablet. The location of the engine room is going to depend upon your choice of sterndrive or shaftdrive models. In the floor of the cockpit, just forward of the table, a hatch lifts to reveal a generous storage locker, or the engine room for the D2 75hp option. If you chose a single or twin sterndrive option, the engine room can be found under the aft bench seat, which in turn becomes a huge locker on the shaft drive model. by a two-part, full-height canopy. The forward section, which can be used on its own to form a canvas wheelshelter, stores on the forward framework just above and behind the helm seat. The whole aft section folds neatly back into a moulding just behind the transom seating. On deck, the DaVinci has complete walkaround decks, although aft of the helm position, things to grab hold of are in short supply, especially with the canopy down. The side decks are a good size, and once up at the bow the deck opens out into a large flat working area. There are two small locker lids to gain access to the anchor locker below, with a windlass and foot switches mounted on deck. The decks, cabin rooftop and cockpit sole are finished

in synthetic teak as standard, and at the transom there is a simple teak laid, stainless steel framed bathing platform with ladder and transom shower. Underway With so many engine options, and even a choice of drive trains, we are strictly limited to talking about the boat we tested. This was fitted with twin Volvo Penta D3 engines, producing 170hp each and, as such, is the second most powerful of the eight options listed. The most surprising thing with a boat that looks like the DaVinci, is that it drives like a sportsboat. You expect it to be all sensible and sedate, but nail the throttles and she is up on the plane within five seconds, after a very short delay while the turbos spool up, and doing 28 knots just three seconds later. The maximum speed on the day was 31.5 knots, but our trim was not working so it is certainly possible that there may be another knot or two hiding in there somewhere. At high speed, you can throw the boat around and it just tucks in and turns tight and true, with little loss of speed. Full lock, high speed turns do return a small amount of reverberation, but this is unlikely to

be noticed in normal everyday use. The steering is light and nicely balanced and running at slow, river type, speeds there was no evidence of the wander that you sometimes get with sterndrive boats. The driving position is very comfortable, with everything in just the right place, and visibility from the helm through the threepart windscreen is excellent. With a wiper on each section of screen, the visibility remained good even during a shower. The screen offers great protection to both the helm and navigator’s seat, and because the aft seating is much lower, this was also a nice place to be when underway, even at high speeds.

Conclusion The shaft drive model, with its small engine and propeller protecting skeg will make a fantastic inland cruiser. Add some extra horsepower and move the engine or engines aft, and you turn the DaVinci into a proper sportsboat. As a family cruiser, it’s probably a bit compromised on accommodation, but for a family day boat, or cruiser for two, the DaVinci 30 has the ability to be whatever you want it to be and comes with a timeless design, quality build and elegance in abundance. In short, the 30 would be equally at home on the Thames during Henley regatta, as it would arriving
