NEWS Campaign for Solent Oyster revival Blue Marine Foundation (BLUE) is campaigning to restore the historic Solent oyster fishery. This follows work carried out by the foundation at the Land Rover BAR headquarters in Portsmouth. Here protected cages of adult oysters were installed on the team’s training pontoon, with the view to replicate this to reproduce and ‘reseed’ the once thriving fishery. Marina group, MDL has supported the campaign by donating £500 in order for the foundation to purchase oysters. BLUE Executive Director, Charles Clover, said “We are very pleased to have the full support of MDL Marina Consultancy. Its donation has allowed us to purchase an incredible 20,000 oysters to help repopulate the Solent’s oyster regeneration. Our aim is to have ten million oysters in the Solent and we hope to unite companies, organisations and individuals to harness the funding and collaborative expertise needed to support our work in reaching this target.” You can find out more at bluemarinefoundation. com or watch a video of the installation here.

New Tingdene branch open at Portishead In partnership with Quay Marina, Tingdene Boat Sales has opened a new sales office at the 280-berth Portishead Quays Marina on the Bristol Channel. Lock works at Heybridge Basin Work is due to be carried out on the lock gates at Heybridge Basin (pictured) on the Blackwater Estuary this winter and works will see the replacement and repair of two of its three sets of lock gates, which will increase its capacity. An original sliding caisson gate, located at the seaward end, has fallen into disrepair and has remained inoperable for years. A new steel caisson gate, tested in Cardiff, will be fitted over the winter and a lock closure is being planned from November until March 2017. New mitred wooden top gates were delivered in July and these are in the process of being installed. The Environment Agency has also de-silted the seaward side of the bottom gates. Williams launch Minijet EXCLUSIVE Ahead of its launch at the Cannes Boat Show, Motorboat Owner got an exclusive preview of the new 2.80m Williams Minijet out in the US. The new Minijet range is smaller, lighter in weight and more accessible as a tender for sub 45ft motorboats. Powered by a BRP Rotax® Ace 900 engine (pictured below), the Minijet has a top speed of 35mph and weighs under 200kg, which, according to the manufacturer, makes it around 100kg lighter than the equivalent Turbojet model. It offers the usual practicalities of a jet RIB, such as shallow draft and manoeuvrability, with ‘no outboard engine to fit or remove every time’. Pedal-powered submarine in crossChannel attempt

Two French engineers have embarked on a challenge to cross the Channel to France in a pedal-powered submarine, travelling 250 kilometres (150 miles). The submarine travels at three kilometres per hour, weighs 3.5 tonnes and is six metres long. The submarine is also equipped with underwater camera equipment and will be filming the journey. The two men, Antoine Delafargue and Michael de Lagarde, will be taking it in turns, paddling an average of 12 hours a day each. Initially they set out on Friday 5th of August from Plymouth, hoping to arrive in Saint Malo on the 12th August. However, the challenge was scuppered by a battery-related gas leak and the crew were forced to abandon. Antoine Delafargue said “The time it took us to solve it made us miss the tide currents window in Saint Malo. So we stayed in Plymouth for a few days to keep testing the sub down to 50m depth which works well”. The submarine is now back in France while to team conduct further tests. You can find out more about the expedition at the Pilot Poisson Pilote Project website.

Antifoul or Coppercoat

We read with interest your comments on self-stripping of antifoul paint in the July issue. We were faced with this dilemma last year. Our antifoul was too pitted to simply cover over, so the dilemma was whether to replace it with new antifoul again or Coppercoat. We too were keen on the long guarantee of Coppercoat. Having talked to friends who had a nightmare applying Coppercoat themselves we decided to splash out by having the whole job professionally done. Being moored at Shotley Marina, the reps at the London Boat Show advised us to use Josh and his team at Levington Marina, only one of a few places in the country that were spraying it on to give a super smooth finish. On our first, and subsequent, trips we have achieved three more knots at our cruising revs of 2300rpm. A massive fuel saving considering we cruise for 150 hours per year. When our boat was lifted after 11 months there was just a tiny film of slime over the coating. Pictured, the hull prior to cleaning. We wait to see how long the coating lasts but so far, so good. Tim Clift Editor replies: Wow, three knots extra speed is a fantastic result. Do keep us informed of how Coppercoat works in the long term. If it carries on the way it has started, I think I will need to look into it myself.

Cruise in company

I’m just getting into the August edition, and peeked at the cruise in company blog which prompted me to drop you and the team a short note to say thank you for producing such a superb magazine/website. The cruise in company reminds me of the trips we made over the channel with you and the old team many years ago. Boats are my passion and no doubt we’ll get back into it in a larger way in the near future. However, for now your magazine whets the appetite each month. Thanks again and congratulations on creating something special. Nigel Pink Editor replies: Thanks Nigel, I’m glad we are helping to keep the boating bug alive for you, and hope that we may see you on one of our cruises again soon. 16

Repairing Volvo hour meters

YOU WILL NEED

I

f you have a Volvo powered boat dating from the 1990’s, through to about the middle of the next decade, which is fitted with a Volvo branded VDO rev counter with a small LCD display for your engine hours, there is a high probability that the latter will be blank. This not only makes it difficult to keep an eye on maintenance schedules, it also raises questions when you come to sell the boat. I have been in this position a couple of

TOOLS • Screwdriver and small spanner for dismantling the tacho • Small serrated blade or multitool for case modification • Soldering iron • Wire cutters/strippers CONSUMABLES • Solder • Epoxy resin or similar • Three small pieces of wire

DIFFICULTY RATING

ooooo

18

September 2016

Our Sealine S28, like many boats from the same era, has non-working LCD hour displays

times. The first was when I bought a brand new engine package in 2005 that came with one of these displays. Within two years the hour meter went blank never to return. I currently have a boat with two of these gauges dating from 1997 and neither of them displays engine hour data. In fact if you search boating forums on the web, you will find countless examples of people with non-working engine hours on these rev counters. Quite what the problem is I am not sure, but damp seems to be high on the lists of suspects. In fact it is often quoted that if you remove the display, take it home, and leave it in an airing cupboard for a few days, the LCD will suddenly spring to life, albeit usually temporarily. You may often find, as I have, that very occasionally, and for no apparent reason, the display will briefly show your engine hours, usually rather faintly. If you can get an up to date reading, this may be useful, as the method that I am going to show you to fix this problem does mean that you lose the original hour reading. In practice this means that you start again from zero, which makes it useful for keeping a check

on your maintenance schedule, but not so useful for proving hours run when it comes to selling the boat. Despite the LCD being blank, they do continue to count the hours, so it may be useful to try the airing cupboard method first and, if successful, make a note of the genuine hours before starting work. You should also be aware that this fix means that you will no longer be able to access the coding and adjustment settings on the tacho, although without a working display this wouldn’t be possible anyway. The easiest way to fix this problem is to simply buy a whole new rev counter from Volvo, which will cost in the region of £200. It was while I was perusing the Seabridge Marine website for some other non-related spares that I noticed they sold a replacement LCD display for the rev counter. This solution seemed inexpensive, so I placed an order. When the item arrived it was clear that fitting it was going to be a bit more in depth than I expected. Nevertheless I persevered, learning a few things along the way. Here’s how I did it.

Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

19

PRACTICAL

HOW TO IN 21 STEPS

1

You will need to remove the rev counter from the boat. This will probably entail loosening the dash panel 4

Now the inner workings twist and push out of the housing via the front

7

Remove the ribbon cable by releasing the plastic catch and gently pulling the cable free

2

3

Undo the two brass screws on the back of the unit. Their inaccessibility meant I had to get imaginative with my tools

Gently prise off the plastic face cover with a screwdriver, and remove the inner metal ring

5

6

Very carefully pull off the needle and place to one side, being careful not to bend it 8

With the two halves separated, undo the two small screws on the face and remove the faceplate

Undo the three small recessed screws on the back to allow separation of the front from the back 9

Now you can prise the old LCD display from its housing. I ran the blade around all edges first

20

September 2016

10

11

12

The new display is much more substantial than the old flat screen, which means the housing must be modified

I used a mini multi-tool and cutting attachment to remove the required section of the housing

The modification continued until the new screen was flush with the surrounding housing

13

14

15

I then trimmed back the four terminals, as they were much longer than needed

Small lengths of thin gauge wire were then soldered to the P, N and I terminals of the hour meter

The hour meter was then fixed in place with some epoxy resin and left overnight to fully cure

16

17

18

If you know your existing engine hours you can connect a 12V supply to the wires until the right hours are displayed

Each lug on the circuit board was marked using the plug on the reverse to help ensure I wired it correctly

The three wires were then soldered onto the appropriate lug on the circuit board

Motorboat Owner Š Digital Marine Media Ltd

21

PRACTICAL

19

20

21

With the ignition on, the hours display, but only count up when the engine is running, noted by the flashing egg timer

Note* You can simply join the P and I terminals on the back of the new hour meter and connect them both to the positive lug. Wired like this, the hour meter will start counting as soon as the ignition is turned on. I tested the various wires with a multimeter and found that the S+ terminal was only positive when the engine was running. This means the hours will only count up when the engine is on, and not when just the ignition is on. The S+ terminal only delivers 7 volts when the engine is running, but this seems to be enough to trigger the counting mode. Contact: Seabridge Marine www.seabridge-marine.co.uk

TIME TAKEN From removal of the tacho to replacing it back on the boat was two days, but this included an overnight period while I waited for the resin to set. That aside there is about four hours of actual work to carry out from beginning to end but on our boat removal and installation of the tacho was only a 5 minute job. You may need to add some extra time if your dash is more complex to dismantle.

If your tacho shows a faint display of the hours, even briefly, make a note of them before commencing work and record it in your log

Channel Islands & Brittany Cruise 23rd July - 6th August

Brittany bound W ith dramatic scenery, huge tidal ranges, fine wine and cuisine, the beautiful Channel Islands and Brittany coast was on the agenda for this year’s two-week, Motorboat Owner Cruise in Company event. Everyone gathered for the off at Lymington Yacht Haven on Saturday 23rd July, and that evening an inaugural cruise briefing was held in preparation for the Channel crossing to Cherbourg. The fleet was a real mixture of sizes, the smallest being 25ft and the largest 60ft. There was a mixture of cruising speeds too, 17-25 knots. Two boats, Gîte

and Breda would be joining the cruise in Jersey, bringing the fleet up to the full compliment of 15 boats. The cruise was staffed by magazine Editor and Cruise Leader, Neale Byart, travelling aboard Sealine S28, TLSea, and Associate Editor, Claire Frew. When Sunday morning came everyone awoke to a very gloomy, grey Lymington. But there was a feeling of anticipation in the air. Some crews would be making their very first cross-Channel passage today. At 06:45 Cruise Leader, Neale, set off aboard TLSea for his reconnaissance conditions check. By 07:30 the call was a ‘go’ and at

08:00 the fleet were filing into a murky western Solent and out of the Needles Fairway. The morning murk gradually lifted and the sea sparkled in the sunshine. However, whilst in the separation scheme, with 30 miles to run to Cherbourg, the fleet encountered a dense fog patch. Radars were fired up and speeds were adjusted, but luckily 10 miles on, the fog suddenly lifted, the sun returned, and soon after the French coastline was in sight. At 13:00 French time (FST), the first boats were entering Cherbourg’s huge Napoleonic harbour. Boats were fuelled and berthed

on the visitor’s pontoons J and Q at Port Chantereyne, and there was still the afternoon to explore Cherbourg and find a nice restaurant for the evening. One boat encountered a problem selecting gear on arrival in Cherbourg, and consequently Neale spent the evening with the owner stripping down the boats electronic gear actuator to get it running again. The next day the fleet would make for St Helier, Jersey, and with timings crucial for the tide in the Alderney Race, and getting in over the sill at St Helier Marina, the plan was for an 08:00 departure. By 06:30 the next morning, Neale,

aboard TLSea was underway again and heading out towards Cap de la Hague to assess the sea conditions. An hour later the call was a ‘go’. The wind had swung around to the west and despite a little wind over a decreasing tide chop up to the Cap, all boats were able to make steady progress along the Cotentin Peninsula coastline. At Cap de la Hague strong tides meet and converge at the top of the Alderney Race, so in order to get the best conditions, the fleet’s arrival was timed for around slack water. Once around the Cap the fleet turned south, and in the beautiful, sunny conditions, the islands of Alderney, Sark and Guernsey were very clearly visible to the west. On passing Sark, a rolling swell from the west was experienced, a common characteristic of this cruising area. Soon the boats were travelling along the west coast of Jersey, passing the Desormes west cardinal and the lighthouse at Corbiere, before turning east in their final approaches to the port of St Helier. Boats were fuelled quickly and efficiently by the team at the Rubis fuel berth, and were soon entering the St Helier Marina basin where they would spend two nights. With many sights and so much to do in St Helier and Jersey, crews were

The crews from Barefoot and Lulu cycled around St Aubin Bay to the east of St Helier. James and Ruth of Katriona cycled in the other direction to the picturesque town of Gorey. Penny and Steve of Gîte followed a historical walking trail to Noirmont Point. Geoff and Martin of La Dolce Vita opted for an all day guided island coach tour at £20 each. For the family aboard Hardy 42, Tally Ho, it was time to inflate their stand up paddleboard and head over to the St Aubin seawater pool. That evening a group dinner was held at the St Helier Yacht Club. Here, crews were made very welcome, enjoying the harbour views from its balcony, before tucking into a threecourse meal. At the meal Neale, detailed plans for the next move south, to the French coast and the marina at St-Cast-leGuildo. Unfortunately, with strong winds forecast the team would need to assess opportunities to get down to the French coast.

Sure enough throughout the day the southwesterly wind increased and many visiting sailing boats flooded in over the marina sill looking for shelter. choppy conditions directly south of St Helier and a swell on the 10-mile section of the route south. However, with better conditions further south the call was a ‘go’ with boats advised to adjust their speed in order to make the passage comfortable in the conditions. A few minutes later the fleet was filing out over the sill and were on passage. Conditions noticeably improved passing the Minquiers and by the time the French coastline was in sight, the sea conditions were absolutely flat. The 800-berth St-Cast Port d’Armor marina lies due west of St Malo and offers 24-hour tidal access. The fleet was organised into rafts for its two-night stay along the marina’s outer breakwater. A pontoon party was held in celebration of reaching French shores, which continued late into the evening. The next day was cloudy, with occasional sunshine and very humid temperatures. St Cast’s main shopping street is one road back from the beachfront, and it has a huge choice of cafes and restaurants, plus boutiques, gift and craft shops. The family from Bayliner 245, Greek Princess spent the whole day on the lovely sandy beach, while the crews from La Dolce Vita and Gîte walked around the picturesque headland to the north west of the marina. An altogether brighter day awaited the fleet the next day for the 7-mile passage east to St Malo. The plan was for a departure at 13:30, aiming to get the 14:30 Ecluse du Naye lock into Bassin Vauban in St Malo. by one, the fleet entered the high-sided lock, where the staff assisted crews in securing their long lines to the bollards. The locking-in process took approximately an hour. On arrival at Port Vauban marina, staff in a dory showed each boat into a berth on newly installed pontoons, all with electric and water. With the walled city just yards away, and a two-night stay ahead, crews wasted no time in venturing off into town in search of food, or of course, for the obligatory walk around the town’s magnificent ramparts. The next day brought warm sunshine and, for many, it was the ideal opportunity to hit the beach or see the sights. Being the weekend, St Malo was buzzing and the views out to sea from the ramparts were spectacular. John and Kitty from Jazzbo went to Mass in St Malo’s stunning cathedral before spending the afternoon on the beach. walls, with their total haul numbering 21. Binic was the next port of call, which was approximately 32 miles to the west of St Malo. However, with a deadline to get into Binic, with its tidal gate, restricted lock operational times at St Malo and a fleet of varying speeds, the window was tight. There was also a forecast of strengthening winds in the afternoon to consider. At the evening pontoon brief there was a collective gasp when Neale announced it was “radios on at 04:15”. The fleet would depart via the 04:41 lock, and would be making passage towards Binic before sunrise. With alarms set to some ungodly hour, many retired to bed early. Onboard control boat, TLSea the alarm sounded at 03:45 and, after a last minute online weather check, at 04:30, Neale asked everyone to slip lines ready for the 04:41 lock. When the lock gates opened a steady procession of large fishing trawlers emerged from another inner basin. As they had priority, they filed into the floodlit lock first before the fleet were given the green light to enter. Inside the lock Neale

chatted to one of the fisherman who asked “are you all going fishing?”, Neale’s reply was “No, the fish are all yours.” Forty-five minutes later the fleet were departing the lock into the darkness of the St Malo approaches, with the glow of the sunrise and a crescent moon to the east. With TLSea at the front, the procession of navigation lights along well-lit channel was quite a spectacle. The sunrise was soon painting the sky with an array of reds and oranges, and the rising sun glinted on the water. Despite some chop off Cap Frehel, it was an excellent passage. The first boat entered the gated basin at 07:30, with the rest of the fleet following closely behind. With the gate closing at 08:10, Neale urged the two last boats to push on, and a cheer went up when they came through the gate with minutes to spare. Some crews went back to bed for a snooze but, with the local patisseries just opening, many went off in search of a breakfast pain au chocolat and obligatory baguette. At least we had a sunny day to explore the seaside town of Binic. A briefing was held that

evening, and a pontoon party followed (albeit in light rain). The next day’s move was to be to Paimpol. However, with some windier weather forecast, Neale had made the decision to stay an extra night in Binic, with the view of visiting Paimpol for one night on Wednesday. weather had other ideas. The wind soon gathered pace, flags stood to attention as a band of rain moved across the town and harbour, which stayed for much of the day. Despite the damp and dismal weather, crews were out and about, stocking up on food supplies, visiting the local chandlery and eating in the various cafes and restaurants. By late afternoon the rain had cleared, but the wind was still howling. What will tomorrow bring? Neale had spent most of the day closely looking at the weather, and planning the next move. The delightful fishing harbour of Paimpol had been on the agenda but, with the changing weather, the team had decided to move to a port with all tides access and fuel, in preparation for the next passage to Ross Young

Guernsey. Luckily the huge neighbouring marina at St-Quay-Portrieux, which is just 3 miles west from Binic, was able to accommodate the fleet at short notice. Weather permitting, the fleet would depart on the morning gate opening. After the evenings pontoon briefing a tapas-style Safari Supper commenced. This had been organised by Ruth from Katriona and saw several boats taking part supplying food and drink to numeous guests. Just after the gate opened at 06:25 the next day, TLSea headed out to assess the sea conditions. Shortly afterwards the call was a ‘go’ and the fleet was soon underway. The weather was overcast, with strong winds, but out in the sheltered bay conditions were flat. A matter of minutes later, the fleet was arriving at St-Quay Port d’Armor. The marina staff were ready and waiting to help those who required fuel, and assisted Claire in berthing all the boats onto visitor pontoon 7. Tony and Amanda of Barefoot took a 45-minute bus ride to Paimpol and, despite the wet weather, really liked what they found. Paimpol is to the west of St-QuayPortrieux and is a small traditional fishing harbour with a drying approach channel and entry lock.

The final farewell. Bayliner 245, Greek Princess passes the Needles, marking the end of the cruise

about the adventures of the two weeks. Crews awoke to a clear, bright morning in St Peter Port and were busy readying for the ‘off ’, wiping away the dew from windows, taking in lines and shorepower cables, and saying their final farewells to fellow cruise members out on the pontoon. Eleven boats departed St Peter Port, with most heading for the Solent. Nelson 44, Katriona was heading for Braye harbour in Alderney, while Evolution 30, La Dolce Vita set course for their home port of Penzance, an epic voyage of around 130 miles. Jeanneau Merry Fisher 855, Cordisque stayed on in St Peter Port for another week, while Princess V39, Gîte remained in St Peter Port before returning to its summer berth in St Helier. With the sun overhead the fleet snaked its way out the harbour and out into a flat Little Russell. Here control boat TLSea was stationed ready for a final photo shoot. Shortly afterwards dolphins were spotted off the top of Herm Island. Everyone was up and underway travelling at speeds of 18-23 knots, and with a favourable spring tide, the fleet made its way up through the Alderney Race. With a clear blue sky,

a calm sea and great visibility, conditions were ideal. There was the usual turbulent swell at the top of the Race, but fortunately this was short-lived. Conditions in the channel were superb and everyone ran on track heading towards the Needles. With the Isle of Wight in sight, boats began peeling off to their homeports and were saying their farewells on the radio. As midday approached crews were reporting their safe arrival to their respective ports. However, there was one boat that would take a little longer. At 17:00 the crew of La Dolce Vita confirmed their safe arrival in Penzance after a long 8-hour passage. And that was that. The cruise was not blessed with the best of weather, but it was certainly a fantastic couple of weeks, with many great memories and experieces, and some new friends made along the way. LOGBOOK

Q&A

Your Questions Answered

Trailboat for £10k

Q I am just getting into boating and

want to buy a boat that the family can use mostly for a bit of watersports, maybe the odd fishing trip and generally blasting around, possibly stopping somewhere for lunch. I intend to keep the boat at home on a trailer so it needs to be small enough to tow but it also needs to accommodate up to five of us for days out. The Internet seems littered with small sportsboats, but I really don’t know where to start. My budget is around £10k, can you recommend any particular boat?

A With your criteria I keep coming back to a RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat). They

are great for just the kind of use you have in mind and, for their size, can swallow up a surprising number of passengers. I would suggest something in the 5-6 metre range and, if you want to use it for watersports, with an engine of between 75125hp. For your budget you should be able to pick up a nice package on a good trailer and with a four stroke, or modern two stroke, engine. We would definitely recommend doing an RYA Powerboat Level 2 training course as it’s an excellent way to learn, and great fun too.

Swapping to a V8 engine

Q I have a 5.0 litre 230hp engine in my sportsboat, and have been offered a 5.7 litre 260hp version of the same engine for very little money. The new engine comes with no ancillaries except the carburettor. Will it be a straight swap and will all the other ancillaries, including the drive, bolt straight on.

A I once did exactly this, and swapped everything, including the carb, without any

problems. In truth the main difference, externally, will probably be found in the carb, so I may well have been ‘strangling’ the bigger engine. As you are getting the right carb as well, you won’t have this problem, so I cannot see any issues in doing the swap. Whether the extra 30hp is worth the effort in most applications is questionable, but if the 230hp engine is marginal on power it could just make a worthwhile difference. 40

Socket for dinghy inflator

Q I have an LVM high speed dinghy inflator that

is powered by attaching crocodile clips direct to the battery, which is a bit fiddly. Can I just cut the clips off and put a plug on the end so I can power it through the cockpit cigarette lighter socket?

A Unfortunately the LVM pump draws up to 25A, and most 12-volt cigarette-

lighter style plugs and sockets are only rated to 10A. What you would need to do is to install a heavy duty socket, such as the Bulgin 32A 900 series, as close as possible to the battery using heavy gauge cable, 8mm2 should be good for up to around three metres, together with a suitable fuse.

Mystery Boat

Q We were recently

visiting Jersey, not by boat unfortunately, and saw this sturdy looking vessel in the harbour. It looks just like the sort of boat I am after but I couldn’t see a makers name on it anywhere. Can you tell me what it is?

A It’s not a boat that I instantly recognize. Knowing the Channel Islanders as I do,

it would not surprise me if it started life out as something very different and has been modified or even rebuilt to look like it does today. Having said that, the hull has some distinctive features, such as the sweeping knuckle at the bow that reminds me of a Colvic, so maybe one of our readers may recognize it. However, if that style of boat is what you are after, you should also consider a Channel Islands 32, a Mitchell 31, Hardy 27, or something from the Seaward, Aquastar or Nelson ranges.

Dirty diesel

Q My fuel filters have never had any dirt or

water in them since I bought the boat last year, but having just completed a run back across the Channel, which was our first trip out in choppy conditions, I found the transparent filter bowls are full of what looks like black sludge. Have I got diesel bug?

A It could be bug, or it could simply be that this first choppy trip has stirred up some sediment that has been laying in the fuel tank undisturbed for some time. Your best bet would be to change the filters, clean out the bowls and monitor the situation. Dosing with a diesel bug treatment, such as Marine 16 or Grotomar 82 won’t hurt, but if the new filters quickly become contaminated again you may need to get your fuel polished. 42

Solent pump-out services

Q I have just moved my boat from the

Thames to the Solent but have been struck by the lack of pump-out facilities. I haven’t seen a single one in any of the marinas I have visited so far. On the Thames I used to pump out regularly. What do all the Solent boaters do?

A It may be surprising to someone coming from the inland waterways, but

many coastal boats are not actually equipped with a holding tank. In these boats, considerate use is down to the owners, and they should ensure that the sea toilet is not used in harbours, marinas or anchorages. There are no laws to govern sewage discharge from the kind of boats we own, although there are rules for larger boats and commercial vessels, but good practice dictates that sea toilets should only be used, and holding tanks discharged, when at least three miles offshore and in waters where tide and wave action will disperse and dilute the discharge. For those that would prefer not to discharge at sea at all, you can find a list of coastal, as well as inland, pump-out stations on the Green Blue website. I must admit they do seem a bit thin on the ground, but there are 10 located in and around the Solent, so you should be able to pump out without going too far out of your way.

Limescale removal

Q I have some limescale appearing around the base of my galley tap. I am conscious of damaging the worktop, which I think may be Corian, by using a harsh chemical limescale remover. Can you suggest something gentler that won’t cause my worktop any harm.

A If you have been following my outboard rebuild, you may have spotted that I

cleaned some of the engine’s cooling components of limescale by soaking them in white vinegar. It does a great job of removing limescale and I cant imagine it will cause your worktop any harm. Just be prepared for your boat to smell like a chip shop for a day or two! As always, try it on a small inconspicuous area first, just in case. 44

B

ack in the late 80’s and throughout the 90’s, the 25ft sportscruiser was the archetypal starter boat for someone looking for something a bit more than just a dayboat or a watersports machine. 25ft sportsboats were the first rung on the cruiser ladder and the smallest boat that a couple could comfortably stay on for extended periods as they spread their cruising water wings. The choice was quite literally bewildering with numerous north American brands competing with some home grown choices from Fairline, Falcon and Sealine to name just a few. Tightening economic conditions meant that, as the century neared an end, many of the British builders had abandoned this market for more profitable, larger models, and as the downturn in 2008 took hold even many of the US brands disappeared from the scene,

either due to company liquidation or just a reduction in UK dealer representation. While we are unlikely to see a return of the British sportscruiser in any great numbers, we are beginning to see a resurgence from over the other side of the pond, with the likes of Bayliner once again producing compact cruisers, and brands such as Monterey and Glastron returning to UK boat shows. Four Winns went

through their own problems, when parent company Genmar filed for bankruptcy in 2009. The brand, along with a few others owned by Genmar, were bought in 2010 by Recreational Boat Holdings, who in turn sold them to the Beneteau Group in 2014. Throughout these turbulent times Four Winns has, as far as I can remember, continuously offered a 25ft sportscruiser in their range. The latest is the 255 Vista and we couldn’t wait to get onboard to find out what it offers. Down below you will find a fairly bog standard 25ft sportscruiser layout with a convertible dinette in the bow. The squarish bow of the exterior translates into a wide dinette at the bow and, when converted, a double berth that retains width all the way forward. This area looks like it would comfortably take a whole family for dining, which makes it all the more strange that the standard table is a bit on the small side, feeling more like Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

a cosy table for two. The dinette offers particularly good seated headroom all the way forward, with almost standing headroom on the raised dinette plinth area. With the infill in place the berth is a decent size, although not being square the

Good head height, the use of light coloured materials, two overhead skylights, an overhead hatch and an eye level fixed port on either side means the bow area is bathed in light. As you would expect,

The galley may lack a hob, but this can be compensated for by opting for one in the cockpit

there is open bilge storage below the bow cushions, both up front and on either side, but the access hatch to the port storage is tiny. Aft of the dinette, on the port side, is the boat’s galley, which has a generous 6ft 2in standing headroom. This is actually bigger and more usable than you would expect on a cruiser of this size, with a single sink, lots of work surface and a fridge and microwave. What it lacks, hob aside, is cupboards or drawers, but it makes up for this with loads of open storage both above and below the worktop. Opposite the galley you will find the toilet compartment. This offers 5ft 11 in headroom, a small shallow sink, shower facilities and, on our boat, a portable toilet. A manual or electric sea toilet with or without holding tank is available on the options list. The compartment is quite dark, due to only having a single, small, non-opening port, but an electric

There isn’t much in the way of cupboard space inside this compartment, but just outside there is another area of useful open-fronted storage. The aft section of cabin is where you will find the boat’s second berth in a standard athwartships, under cockpit sole configuration. This is separated from the rest of the accommodation by a curtain and is accessed through a decent sized opening, albeit one that requires stooping or crawling to use. The berth here is huge at nearly 7ft long and 4ft 6in wide. There are three big open storage lockers along the aft bulkhead, which would be plenty big enough to store clothes and personal possessions for an extended stay onboard, but I am left wondering why none of these storage spaces seem to have doors. A small opening port above opens into the cockpit and offers a small amount of natural light and good ventilation. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

Access into and out of the boat is via a Perspex bi-fold door and gas strutted Perspex companionway hatch. On the port side there is a rather complex seat arrangement that can be configured as

a full-length port bench/lounger, which could seat up to four crew, or an L-shaped seat. The latter offers a second forward facing seat, albeit quite a way aft, but it doesn’t have a backrest. In L-shaped configuration it also provides an aft facing bench for two around the aft cockpit dinette, but again with no backrest. On the starboard side, the helm console comes with a nice large and comfy helm seat with a lifting bolster and a small amount of fore and aft adjustment. The console itself is quite something. Stitched vinyl, retro-modern gauges and switchgear and a flush mounted multifunction

display is all reminiscent of a luxury sports car. With the hole in the dash for the Raymarine E7 on our test boat looking like it had been laser cut for a perfect fit, it does leave me wondering how an owner down the line will tackle an electronics upgrade on not just this boat, but many of the current models that are going down this route. The dark coloured vinyl atop the console is a nice touch that will help to reduce the glare on the steeply angled windscreen. Behind the helm there is a wet bar, and it is here that you will find the boat’s single electric hob. There is also a sink unit here and, in the large double cupboard underneath, there is space for a big coolbox, or you can have an optional refrigerator if required. On the aft end of the wet bar unit there is a cockpit shower, a 12 volt outlet and a waterproof mains socket. At the back of the cockpit you have a transom seat big enough for three and the optional removable cockpit table, around which you could probably get five at a squeeze. The whole transom seat assembly lifts up with the engine hatch to gain access to the engine room, which on our test boat housed one of Volvo’s latest generation V6 engines, producing 280hp. As is the case with many sportscruisers, the V255 lacks side decks so access forward is achieved by climbing three moulded steps next to the helm and through the centre opening section of the windscreen. The optional anchor windlass is neatly located beneath the anchor locker hatch and, despite the locker being a generous size, the opening is too small to allow it to be used for fender storage. The fuel filler is located in the starboard topsides, which could make filling a bit awkward if the fuel pontoon or quayside is particularly high and you moor starboard side too. I would have preferred to see it on one of the knuckles on the transom, where any spills could still run away, and refueling could be carried out from the bathing platform when moored either side too. the fact that this boat comes with a great deal of canvas. The plus side of this is that you get a huge sheltered space to extend your accommodation when required, the downside is of course the fiddliness of taking it down and putting it back up again. A neat touch here is that the factory canvas comes with little red and green zip tags to help identify which panel goes on which side. The canopy also has a sealing strip along its bottom edge to help reduce drafts, which is another neat touch. Underway We took the V255 out into a rather choppy Bristol Channel, so it wasn’t going to get an easy ride. With the wind blowing a Force 4-5 there was quite a chop, even in the shelter

of Swansea Bay, but the 255 behaved impeccably. We were able to maintain a fast cruising speed with barely a slam from the hull, even into a head sea. With a beam sea the hull did lean into the wind but, despite their small size, the trim tabs soon brought things back on an even keel. We did get a bit wet when the waves were on the beam, but that was more to do with the fact that we were making some fast runs into some windy conditions and the spray was getting blown back onboard, than anything else. What I really liked about it though, sea keeping aside, was that it felt like a sportsboat. It really was a lively little thing, that felt eager to please. It had perfectly balanced and precise steering, which meant you could throw it around without feeling like you were wrestling with the steering wheel or in danger of not knowing where you were going to end up pointing. It had great acceleration and jumped onto the plane in about three seconds, at which point it was doing around 14 knots for 3500rpm. In a tight turn it would lean, quite alarmingly in fact, but once you got used to it, it was in fact a great deal of fun. We did encounter some ventilation from the

prop, but I suspect our test boat may have been slightly under propped as we were reaching 6000rpm on an engine rated to 5800rpm. The driving position is good when seated, with the screen providing excellent shelter, and all instruments and controls readily to hand. You even get a nice comfy elbow rest for your throttle arm. If you want wind in your hair, just pop the bolster up and lean against it and you can comfortably helm whilst looking over the top of the screen. The windscreen wiper, which is an option that I would suggest must be ticked, did a great job of keeping good visibility, despite the amount of spray we were kicking up. Noise wise the figures show that the 255 is not an overly noisy

boat, but at full throttle you are greeted with a loud aggressive sounding growl. Conclusion The V255 continues the long tradition of providing a great starter cruiser for a couple or family. There are some areas where I would have liked to see a bit more effort, particularly with the storage down below and the lack of any doors, but then there are other areas where I think the boat is perfect, such as the helm console. As a driver’s boat, and a sportscruiser really should excel at this, it is very good indeed. As well as being immensely fun to drive, it is more than capable of dealing with the sort of conditions you would be happy

The Four Winns V255 is an attractive boat, has a good hull and is terrific fun to drive

taking any 25 footer out in. In fact I would go as far as to say it has one of the most capable hulls of any 25ft sportscruiser I have ever driven.

tested Evinrude E-TEC G2 150-200HP When Evinrude launched the E-Tec G2 back in 2014, I have to admit, I was a bit smitten. The 200-300hp motors delivered the kind of torque and acceleration that four strokes found it hard to compete with, but unlike two strokes of old, it claimed to do it with better than four stroke fuel economy and emissions. Then there was the clever features such as built in power steering, automatic trim, one button winterising and very long service intervals, not to mention a completely new design that dated other outboards overnight. Two years later BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products), the owners of the historic Evinrude brand since OMC’s unfortunate demise in 2001, has cascaded the G2 design and features down to a range of more UK friendly motors. The new range consists of a 150hp, 150hp High Output, 175hp and 200hp engines built around a brand new 2.7 litre 66° V6 block. If you follow outboards as much as I do you will no doubt be saying “wasn’t there a 200hp G2 already?” The answer to that is yes. The new 200 will run alongside the existing 200 and will be differentiated by the existing 200 being designated a HO model. BRP tell us that any HO model produces around 10% more HP than what’s on the lid. So the old 200 is effectively a 220hp motor and the new 150HP HO is more like a 165HP. First, let’s look at some of the claims BRP are making about the new range,

PRICE FROM

£15,639

most of which apply to the existing G2’s, but it is worth reminding ourselves. The biggest is, of course, the claim that a twostroke G2 is around 30% more fuel efficient than a competitive four stroke engine. For those whose memories of two stroke hark back to the 60’s and 70’s this will be hard to believe, but has been achieved by designing the engine from scratch around the combustion process. This allows the fuel to be mixed and injected into the cylinder with levels of precision that previous generations of two stroke engines just could not achieve. A by-product of this is clean emissions. That’s right BRP claim that its two stroke engines are even cleaner than four stoke motors in terms of CO, hydrocarbons and NOx. The CO levels are particularly impressive, at around

58

September 2016

All tests in Motorboat Owner are carried out by real boaters in real life situations

720ppm at idle and trolling speeds, which is below the 1200ppm that is considered to be immediately dangerous to human health. According to BRP’s figures, some competitor four strokes emit as much as 60,000+ ppm in a similar situation. There was no mention from the BRP boffins of CO2 levels, so I suspect these may not be much to shout about, but still, credit where credit is due. G2’s comply with all current global emission regulations and are already compliant with RCD II for emissions and noise levels, a European standard that won’t be introduced until 2017. Being two stroke, the G2 benefits from delivering power on every revolution of the piston, rather than every other revolution on a four stroke. The result of this is increased torque and power that, according to their figures, delivers 30% faster acceleration. Another bold claim is that the engines deliver their full rated output at much lower revs. The example given was the 200hp model which delivers its full 200hp at just over 4000rpm, at which point an equivalent four stroke engine might only be producing 150hp. So, the result is more power, quicker acceleration, lower fuel consumption and lower emissions. It sounds like BRP has hit the holy grail, but there were a couple of points on which they were silent, or at least rather muted. Noise levels, even by their admissions, are not as good as four strokes,

tested Evinrude E-TEC G2 150-200HP continued...... although they do claim to come close. The other issue is weight. Surprisingly, I thought that being two stroke, they would be shouting from the roof tops about best power to weight ratio in its class, etc, but not a word. The reason was soon discovered when I looked up the specs and found that the 150-200hp G2’s carry a few extra kilos over their four stroke rivals. This is surprising, but then you have to understand that the weight of the G2 includes its inbuilt power steering and the onboard oil tank, so actually they aren’t doing too badly on that score either, but best in class is not a title they can rightly claim just yet. The new smaller G2’s are all available with BRP’s dynamic power steering, although you can opt to have the 150 and 150HO without if required, which saves money and weight. What you have to remember is that as an option, the DPS comes in at around £800, compared to a figure of around double this or more for

It is not often you can test outboards like this

I-Trim and Power Steering Assist are just two of G2’s features. I-Trim is standard on all G2’s

a conventional power steering system, so it appears to be a bit of a no-brainer. All G2’s come as standard with iTrim, BRP’s automatic trim system. They also come as standard with digital throttle and shift, with a new Icon II model of top and side mount controls that are said to offer digital benefits at a mechanical price, and of course, the tidy rigging that G2 is known for. So how does all this translate out on the water? BRP did not seem to shy away from direct comparisons. I have been to many outboard launches over the years so am used to seeing charts presented to show the new launch in a better light than their competitors, but I have never been offered the chance to test the new motor against the rivals on identical boats. Even more strangely, I was able to test one boat fitted with twin engines, one 150hp HO G2 and one 200hp four stroke. Although the rival engines had been installed by BRP, we were assured that it was done under the scrutiny of an independent witness.

September 2016

All tests in Motorboat Owner are carried out by real boaters in real life situations

The first boat I tested the new G2 on was a Scout 255LXF. This may not be a boat we are familiar with this side of the pond but it is a big centre console vessel weighing in at around 2500kg with engines. When I went out on it, we had a 70% full fuel tank and five big fellas onboard too, to bring the total weight up to around 3200kg. The boat was rigged with a 150hp G2 and a 200hp four stroke engine. With both engines running, the boat flew, but this boat was rigged like this to show the benefit of the extra torque of the Evinrude. Cruising at around 25 knots on both engines we shut one off and lifted it clear of the water. In both cases the boat slowed, but with the Evinrude it remained on the plane at around 15 knots, compared to the four stroke which dropped off and could only maintain around 10 knots. We also tried to see what would happen when starting from stationary. Surprisingly, the Evinrude got the heavy boat up on the plane and up to the aforementioned 15 knots on its own, while the four stroke simply couldn’t get the boat over the hump with the weight we were carrying. The benefit here is obvious. With twin 150’s this boat would not only perform well, but if you had a problem, you could still maintain a slow planing speed to get you home. It was also noticeable on this boat how smooth the gear shifting seemed to be, with much less of a pronounced clunk as the gears of the G2 engaged. Our second test was onboard a centre console Key West 203FS fitted with a 150hp

HO. We also had another identical boat fitted with a 150hp four stroke. Could there be a better opportunity for a drag race? With both boats side by side, the throttle was pinned forward on the count of three and despite running this test numerous times, with myself driving both boats, the result was always the same. The Evinrude boat jumped onto the plane quicker and forged ahead. Once the four

tested Evinrude E-TEC G2 150-200HP continued......

The 150HO out accelerated an identical boat with an equivalent four stroke motor

stroke boat was up on the plane the gap remained fairly constant, telling me that top end is not significantly different, but it was never going to make up the gap that the quicker acceleration had opened up. It has to be said here that the HO model, in BRP’s own words, produces more like 165hp, so there was a bit of an advantage here. What I will say though is that the acceleration is brutal. If you find yourself at the helm of a G2 powered boat you had better make sure everyone is holding on before nailing the throttle, as the acceleration is surprising and so obviously quicker than a typical four stroke engine.

Another point to note is that we had around 30 boats in the water running two stroke G2’s, all going constantly in and out of the marina, and not once did I smell a single whiff of exhaust, see any smoke, and most importantly, see any evidence of unburnt fuel/oil on the water surface. On that score, this combined 4,800hp, seemed considerably cleaner than my single 3.3hp old school two stroke, which would have left a trail of smoke and an oil slick behind on these pristine lake waters. So are there any negatives? Well the noise levels are a bit higher than you get with a four stroke. At idle there is a noticeable dry

One of the G2’s nice features is the ability to customise its colour scheme to match, or complement, the boat

raspy note from the exhaust and, at speed, you do get a bit of two-stroke roar, which I quite like, but if noise levels are the most important factor to you, the G2 might not be the engine for you, despite all the benefits. The other issue is the two stroke oil. The stuff that these G2 engines use must include liquid gold, because cheap it is not. Here you have to do some man maths to justify the cost. The oil is around £150 for a tank full. BRP say that a tank will typically last around 50 hours, which is a season for most of us. With a four stroke outboard you would be looking at an oil change once a season, at a cost of around £75 for a decent synthetic engine oil and replacement filter. Then you have to consider the downtime and cost of servicing. A G2 has no dealer scheduled service for 5 years or 500 hours. In that time, a four stroke may require up to five services, at a cost of around £1500 (this would include the aforementioned oil and filter changes). Also, if the claims are true, you will benefit from a 30% saving on fuel over the season. At 50 hours this could amount to an extra £300-£400 in your pocket. Add all this up and it soon becomes clear that the cost of the required

liquid gold is actually a price worth paying, and you may in fact be quids in at the end of each year. One other thing that I am not totally convinced about is the removable cowling panels. I know that you shouldn’t have to remove them more than once a year for an oil top up, but compared to existing outboards, the numerous screws seem a bit fiddly and time consuming. BRP have promised to launch three new outboard ranges over the next three years, and I am guessing this means that the G2 range will come down in size, maybe as low as the 30hp model available in the first generation of E-Tec. If we still have Olive in three years time I can genuinely see myself splashing out on a nice little 40hp G2. They have introduced a Motorboat Owner new Ice Blue and “The E-Tec G2 has camouflage colour set some new scheme for the 2017 standards for mid models, I wonder range engines” if Olive green will feature by 2020? tested Raymarine Dragonfly 7PRO Raymarine launched their Dragonfly range of electronics around four years ago and has been expanding the line-up ever since. Despite how long they have been around, I have never used one in anger so I thought it was time I put that right. The range now consists of seven models with three four inch, three five inch and a single seven inch display. Different models offer different features, ranging from the 5M standalone chartplotter, to the 7PRO, which combines a chartplotter with a dual channel CHIRP sonar fishfinder and DownVision bottom scanning capabilities. We decided we might as well test the full range of functions the Dragonfly range offers, so ordered up a 7PRO, the newest addition to the range. Installation is very simple. The special DownVision compatible transducer is transom mounted and easy to install with the boat out of the water. The head unit is mounted on a simple swivel ball mount that is loosened and tightened quickly for easy adjustment of viewing angle. Completely removing the head unit requires the large plastic wing nut to be fully undone, so removal for security on an open boat is not as quick or easy as we

would like. A single wiring loom connects up to both the transducer and the power supply via a quick release and lock connector on the back of the head unit. Despite the lack of buttons, and the simple labeling on the ones it does have, the 7PRO was very easy to navigate around. Switching between chart, sonar and DownVision was achieved with a couple of button clicks, and options include split screens, both vertically and horizontally, for viewing two of the three functions at the same time, but only in the formats pre-programmed. There did not appear to be any way to customize these screen options, or indeed have all three on display at the same time. The visibility and clarity of the display were exceptional, even in bright sunlight, although the particularly shiny screen did throw back a lot of reflections, especially if you were using something The transducer provides dualchannel sonar and DownVision

like the DownVision function, which has a dark background. The processor sometimes seemed a little slow to react when entering a command, which occasionally resulted in me pressing a button twice through impatience and passing through what I wanted, and onto the next function. The process of entering waypoints and routes is pretty intuitive, especially if you have prior Raymarine user interface experience, but renaming and amending waypoints did seem a bit long winded. Charts can be provided by C-Map, Navionics or Lighthouse, via a Micro SD card slot on the back of the unit, or the chart compatible units can be ordered with built in charts. The sonar function worked exactly as expected, and is said to work down to 275m, but what I was more interested in was the DownVision function. We were desperately hoping to find a wreck or something during our test, but the bay we were testing in was remarkably devoid of

anything interesting. We did manage to see some very clear Value 4/5 bottom formations Usability 3/5 and passing close to Performance 4/5 a fish farm we could make out all of the bottom anchor points and lines very clearly. While these features are designed, and would be great, for fisherman, I challenge anyone who goes boating not to be fascinated by the view that something like DownVision provides. It beats watching TV any day. The Dragonfly range starts at just £249 RRP, with a high street price of below £200 for a 4DV or DVS, which is a very affordable way to add DownVision technology to your boat. For the multifunction 7PRO you can have all these features, together with EU cartography, for an RRP of £745, or less if you shop around. Contact: Raymarine www.raymarine.co.uk

tested Stop Gull Keeper £39.95 PRICE

We seem to be reasonably blessed where me moor in that we don’t have a real problem with seagulls, but I have spoken to enough boat owners that do, to know that in some harbours it can be a serious problem. In the past I have tested products that sweep a large arc to keep gulls from landing on cabin tops and foredecks etc, but as good as these products are, they can’t deal with the single gull that perches on top of the radome and uses your canopy as a toilet. Stop Gull is a company who produce a range of anti seagull products including the Stop Gull Keeper, which is designed specifically to deal with this problem. The Keeper requires about 10 minutes of building time out of the packet, and then you need to install it in a rather permanent way, using a strong adhesive. a decent length of wire and remake all four connections. A quick check over the rest of the wiring showed up a couple of other poor connections that needed attention, such as a new terminal on the solenoid for the charging and ignition positive cables. Next I cleaned up and fitted a couple of suitable spark plugs, new ones will be installed once I know that the engine is a runner, and the plug leads connected to plugs and coil packs.

The outboard was then transported to my state of the art outboard testing facility, otherwise known as an old water tank next to a pile of tyres outside of my workshop. Here, a pair of battery leads were connected, the positive to the solenoid and the negative to the engine block, and a spare battery that had been charged overnight connected. As I have not yet tackled the helm wiring, that would include the ignition switch, I

connected up a remote starter between the positive terminal of the solenoid and the ignition terminal. Before I even thought of trying to start the engine there were a couple of tests I needed to carry out. If these threw up some negative results I would need to head back to the drawing board. The first was a spark test, and this threw up a last minute hitch. There had to be one I suppose, and mine was the fact that despite the starter solenoid clicking, the starter motor remained static. With a spanner on the top nut, it quickly became apparent that it had seized. Quite why I didn’t know, as only a few weeks earlier I had swapped starter motors after the first one was found to be seized, and this one was spinning the engine over freely in the Getting closer all the time. Spark plugs were installed and connected to the coil packs workshop. I decided to return to the workshop

and strip the previously seized one down to see what I could do. I was quite surprised to find that the bottom end, where the bushes are housed, was full of what looked like a by-product of aluminium corrosion. The armature was covered in surface rust and the commutator, which should be a shiny brass colour, was black. The housing itself was suffering from surface corrosion but, after a clean up, was found to be still serviceable. The armature and commutator were both cleaned with some fine wet and dry paper and the unit reassembled. The difference was obvious, as the motor now span freely, and a quick test on the battery showed it to be fully operational. A couple of hours after discovering the fault, the starter motors were swapped and I was back to carrying out my prestart checks. After confirming

The ignition system was given a quick check to ensure that it was producing the required sparks

that both plugs were sparking, which was a big relief after my power pack and coil transplant, I moved onto a compression check. This was the big one. A lack of compression at this stage would pretty much write the engine off, and consign the last few months of work to the bin. The first cylinder provided a reading of 110psi, the second cylinder an almost identical reading. While these readings are quite low, they are in the acceptable range and most importantly; they are similar to each other. A low reading on a freshly rebuilt engine is quite usual as the piston rings have yet to bed in.

There could now be no further delay, I connected up a fuel supply, primed the carburettor by squeezing the fuel line bulb until it went solid, pulled the choke out and hit the starter button. A single cough and puff of smoke almost immediately was followed with lots of spinning over with no sign of life. I tried with the chock in and out, with the throttle at all different settings but the engine seemed to be dead. Then hitch number two happened. In the process of rebuilding I had forgotten to torque the flywheel nut. The result was a broken woodruff key, and a freely spinning flywheel. Luckily, I had made exactly the same mistake months previously, with the first engine I obtained for the project boat, and was sensible enough to order a couple of extra ones at the time, so I had a spare. After another short delay while the flywheel was removed and the woodruff key replaced I resumed the cranking, with little obvious effect at first. Then suddenly on about the 15th attempt I was met with another cough and a couple of revolutions under its own steam. After another couple Different engine, same problem. Failure to torque of attempts the engine fired into life and up the flywheel results in a broken woodruff key remained running. There was plenty of 72

smoke of course, and it seemed to be running a little lumpy, but it was running, responding to some light throttle and pumping water like a fire truck. I checked over the whole engine for leaks from any of the gaskets while it was running, but all seemed well. After a short while the motor was warming up nicely, the smoke was reducing and the engine was even starting to run a bit smoother. It is now firing up on the button but I feel there is still a bit of work to do to get it running at its best, but that’s a story for another day.

What’s next? To start with the engine needs to be run in. This

requires a careful build up of power over the first few hours of use. I also want to check that the engine is running at its best in terms of timing etc. This will probably be carried out at the same time as the motor is being run in. Once I am happy that it is running properly and reliably, I am going to fit it to Olive, our project Mayland 16. This will involve uprating the steering from the cable and pulley system currently in place, and wiring to accommodate the electric start and battery charging features that the engine offers. This engine also includes a temperature sender in the cylinder head so I will be looking at installing a temperature gauge at the helm as well as an ignition switch and electric choke button. We will follow up with some of these jobs over the next few months as and when they happen, but in the meantime I am going to go back outside and start the engine again, just because I can. Lessons Learnt Don’t attempt a rebuild of this nature

without a really good workshop manual. Generic manuals are OK, but you can’t beat a manufacturers manual if you can get hold of one. The wiring diagrams in particular were priceless, and will continue to be so as I move on to the installation phase. If you are thinking of rebuilding an old outboard for economic reasons, you are probably best off not bothering. The cost of all the components, gaskets etc that I had to buy, and I did it as cheaply as possible, outweighed the price I could have bought a similar running motor for. You also have to remember that I had another almost complete engine to strip bits from. Without this the cost would have sky rocketed, as I salvaged some quite large and expensive components from that second engine. Having said that, there is value in doing it for your own personal satisfaction. I actually thoroughly enjoyed the process, and the fact that I turned a solidly seized engine into a working motor was the icing on the cake.

hat is the perfect recipe for a small, sub 30ft, river cruiser? Is it comfort? Quality? Manageability? What about low air draught, or the ability to simply step aboard and go off exploring? The truth is, it is all these things and more. Another important requirement for some might be the simplicity and economy of an inboard diesel, but if you wanted all of this in a new package, your choices to ‘buy British’ were fairly limited, until now. When Norfolk builder, Haines Marine announced earlier this year that it was introducing a new 26-foot aft cockpit cruiser, we were keen to see what was in store. And boy, did the company pull out all of the stops. The first boat was revealed

within a matter of months, and three further boats were built and sold in quick succession. We set off down to the Haines Thames dealer, Val Wyatt Marine, to see the first boat and find out more. The 26’s hull and superstructure was designed by John Moxham, and restyled by Haines. From the outside, the 26 actually looks like a much bigger

78 September 2016

“A 26 footer from Haines? But has the company succeeded in ‘reinventing’ the compact river cruiser?”

Haines has combined clean lines, clever features and modern techniques to create a luxury 26 footer

boat. The boat’s modern exterior has distinctively large, heavily-tinted bonded side windows. Haines has also introduced a ‘foredeck lounge’ feature, a two-person seat moulded into the cabin roof. Exterior aside we were most interested to find out what this 26 footer could offer down below in terms of accommodation. Would it offer comfort for the whole family afloat? The accommodation is clever, and sees a real departure from tradition. Inside you will find an open plan cabin area with a dinette in the bow, a bench seat to starboard, with a galley and toilet compartment to port. As you descend through the wide companionway, the first thing you will notice is how incredibly spacious it is. Not only does it make use of the boats wide beam, the upright cabin Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

offers 6ft headroom throughout. The finish is also absolutely exquisite. As a builder, Haines prides itself in choosing quality fixtures and fittings, such as taps and door handles. We love the unique and attractive round metal catches used on the cupboards and drawers, these lift at the bottom to open, and self-lock when closed. The interior of our test boat was fitted out in a walnut hardwood and veneer (a £1500 option), with a coordinating fawn-coloured cloth, both of which bring a rich, luxurious feel to the interior. A leather upholstery upgrade is available for £900. The 26 is fitted with carpet as standard. However, the buyer of boat number one opted for light coloured Antico flooring, which really lifts and brightens the cabin area, and is also very practical. Interiors are also available in

79

Dinette backrests are removed to reveal a V-berth. This could be customised into a double with an infill

laminate finishes of walnut, oak or cherry as part of a standard specification. The cabin area is ideal for entertaining, but at first glance it appears a little stunted and squared off at the bow. There are also no forward windows. So where is the ‘pointy end’ you might ask? Well this boat has a clever trick up its sleeve. With an additional stool and fold out table, by day the raised U-shaped seating area in the bow provides a dining area for four. By night its two backrests are removed to reveal a V-berth sleeping area. Despite appearances each berth is a good length and, during the day, the void behind the backrests is ideal for storing sleeping bags and bedding out of sight. We would have liked to have seen the space under this bow berth better utilised for storage. There are two small cupboards on the aft end of this area, but if you remove the solid based central seat cushion, which is large and cumbersome to handle,

it reveals a large hull chasm with direct access to the bowthruster. Perhaps a loose cushions on top of a wooden hatch would allow this area to be more easily used, and provide easier access to the bow thruster, if required. The lack of forward facing windows is due to the ‘foredeck lounge’ feature, which has been moulded into the cabin roof. Its cushions stow neatly in a locker in the base of the seat, which is above the dinette V berth and accessed from inside the cabin. The large side windows, with an opening section on the port side, are fitted with blinds for privacy. These, together with the flush mounted deck hatch and fixed glass ‘sky screen’ in the roof, are more than adequate for providing light and ventilation. Moving aft, a drinks cabinet drawer unit on the starboard side divides the two seating areas. Back on the lower main floor

80 September 2016

Exquisite carpentry and finish. Right, the starboard bench seat slides out to form a small double

level, the bench seat to starboard provides a comfortable lounging and seating area, albeit a little low to see out. A 6ft 2in long base pulls out and rests on a metal stand to form a 3ft wide double. Two large drawers below this provide ample storage for clothing, or additional galley storage if required. Further aft is a half-height cabinet housing a good-sized wardrobe. Inside its door you will find the Haines builder’s plate featuring the boat number and names of those who worked on it, a charming touch from this family boatbuilder. The L-shaped galley is practical and rather refined for such a small cruiser. In fact it wouldn’t look out of place on a much larger motorboat. Our test boat was fitted with the upgraded Avonite worktop, which incorporates a waste bin and a large deep metal sink with an elegant mixer tap and matching infill. The sink faces aft and has a small grooved area outboard for draining. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

As standard the 26 comes with a surface mounted hob with grill below and no oven. Our test boat had the £795 upgrade that includes a two-burner Dometic gas hob, which is concealed beneath a glass cover when not in use, and a Smev gas oven and grill below. The galley is also equipped with a 49-litre Isotherm fridge, a large shelved cupboard under the sink, a dedicated cutlery drawer, and pan storage under the oven unit. A water pump switch, double power socket and water tank level gauge are set into a brushed metal splashback below the window. The toilet compartment is impressive. In here the feeling of space continues, and the large floor area is maximized by having a bulkhead-mounted sink. There is good headroom too, at 5ft 10in. With the toilet set back aft there is plenty of room to shower, and for this there is a separate shower control with an adjustable height

81

This galley would not look out of place on a larger motorboat and the quality of the finish is superb

The toilet compartment is an excellent size with a shower and curtain enclosure. It does lack a storage compartment for toiletries

shower head. Directly above the sink is a holding tank gauge and the flush control for the upgraded Jabsco electric toilet. You will find the boats 184-litre holding tank and shower sump easily accessible under the cabin floor. A companionway hatch and a set of doors open outwards into the cockpit. At the moment the doors have no retaining latches and are best left shut while underway. We understand that Haines is considering setting magnets into the frame so the doors stay open. Immediately to port is the helm position, with its single upholstered seat, footrest and large locker under the helm seat. The cockpits L-shaped seating area to starboard and aft, will easily accommodate four people, doubling as an alternative dining area with a small slot-in teak table. The 26’s gas locker is under the aft seat, and houses two 3.9kg Propane gas bottles. The adjoining locker offers plenty of deck storage. There is no navigator’s seat, but Haines has moulded a small ‘jump seat’

82 September 2016

Its exterior offers easy access, a versatile cockpit and a foredeck lounge complete with cup holders

into the bulkhead, which offers a unique raised view for a second crew member when underway. In addition to the cockpit seating there is, of course, the foredeck lounge, which is a lovely feature for use while underway or stationary. All exterior cushions are finished in a high quality Silvertex material. The full-width integral bathing platform is an excellent size and, together with the cockpit transom door and a transom grabrail, make it very easy to move about and board the boat at the stern, which is particularly useful when singlehanded. There is also a moulded step in the hull next to the engine vent for boarding from the bankside. Access to the boats side decks could not be easier, with two moulded steps either side leading directly up from the bathing platform. However, with the canopy up there is little to grab hold of as you ascend, so owners may choose to travel with the sidescreens off. The side decks are very Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

generous, and a grabrail running along the cabin roof is at the perfect height for safely moving towards the bow. When it comes to deck hardware, the 26 is very well equipped. There are three cleats at the bow, a larger central one for anchoring and two mooring cleats mounted on the toerail. Centre and aft cleats are also mounted along the toerail, and fenders can be attached to these and the pulpit. The 26’s low air draught of 2.39m is perfect for cruising inland. If you need to go lower, the black powder coated framed windscreens also fold flat as standard, providing an air draught of just shy of 2 metres. This means that realistically it won’t pass under Potter Heigham Old Bridge (1.98m) on the Norfolk Broads, unless river levels are low. It will, however, sail happily under Osney Bridge on the Thames at 2.28m. One of the downsides of aft cockpit cruisers is there is a lot of canopy to wrestle with for the ‘wind in your hair’

Our test boat was fitted with a Nanni N4.38 engine. The supportive helm seat is adjustable

“Easily manageable for two, the 26 combines excellent stability and effortless handling” boat’s battery banks are on the port side, along with the 40-gallon water tank, and the 33-gallon fuel tank is to starboard. When it comes to options, Haines has made it easy for customers. There are two levels of options, a ‘standard’ or an ‘upgraded’ specification, denoted by two engine sizes. The standard options (priced from £105k) are fairly comprehensive to get you on the water, and include items such as a gas hob, fridge, canopy, holding tank and shower. The upgraded specification, priced from £117k, includes useful luxuries such as an inverter, bowthruster, heating and electric toilet. The layout of the 26 comes with a level of flexibility, with Haines offering a degree of customisation. Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

Underway The 26’s cathedral style hull design not only makes the boat incredibly stable, it also produces minimal wake. Being a beamy boat it is the flat underwater sections either side of the keel that bring the stability, while the deep keel and fairly large rudder provide grip and responsive handling. Close quarters maneuvers can be undertaken easily using just the rudder and engine. Our test boat was fitted with bow and stern thrusters, which made life extremely easy. If you want to keep the optional extras cost down to a minimum, but still want great maneuverability, a bowthruster alone will bring piece of mind in breezier conditions. Owners will also be able to use the boats paddle wheel effect to

85

their advantage. A rudder indicator would be another useful addition to help with low speed maneuvers. The propeller and shaft are protected by a skeg, which in turn supports the rudder. This is a particularly useful feature on a boat destined to spend its life exploring the shallow inland waterways, and even shallower bankside moorings. The Haines 26 is fitted with a single diesel shaftdrive engine and there are currently two Nanni engine options available, the N4.30, or the N4.38, which was fitted to our test boat. Rated to 37.5hp, the N4.38 pushes the boat along nicely at river speeds with minimal fuss. The boats ‘sweet spot’ seems to be around the 1200rpm mark, giving a speed of 4 knots. At this speed sound readings are minimal. Push the lever forward and the N4.38 will deliver speeds approaching 7 knots, which may be useful if venturing onto tidal rivers. At the helm, the visibility through the large angled windscreen is excellent. The

With its transom door there is no need to climb aboard through canopy side screens on this boat

only things that could restrict your vision are people seated in the foredeck lounge or an open companionway hatch. The single Morse throttle control is close to hand, a simple GPS speedo is mounted ahead on a vertical dash panel, and switches and engine dials are arranged on a lower angled dash panel. Very little effort is required when it comes to steering, and from here you can just sit back in the helm seat, rest your feet on the footplate, and let the world float by.

Conclusion There is certainly a demand for this class of river cruiser, and we are so pleased that another British manufacturer has addressed such an important market. Rain or shine, the 26 is certainly a boat you can simply step aboard and use. Overall, the rather unconventional interior layout works, and is perfect for day boating. Yet reassuringly, the cabin still provides the necessary comfort, privacy and facilities for a couple, or a family, staying aboard for cruising further afield. Throw in another two adults and things may become a little ‘friendlier’, but having that option is the

important thing. At just over £100k, the 26 may seem expensive for someone looking to buy their first boat, but you are certainly getting a quality cruiser for your money.
