TECH TALK There are many Boosters on the market at different price points. When choosing a booster there are many things to consider:-

The specification and output of the booster pack. Comparing the output of a booster can be confusing, there are 3 measures in common use. Products are often rated in Peak Amps or Cranking Amps, however the most informative measure is the Starting Current. This is measured as the maximum output (Amps) of the booster where the battery is at 1V per cell, so clearly it is important when comparing boosters that the same measure is used. The peak amp figure will always be much higher, but it is the Starting Current that is the best guide to the perfomance of the unit. The specification of the charger. When purchasing a booster you are investing in a powerful battery which can be expensive. The BT5000 MkII, undoubtedly the UK’s most popular motorcycle roller brake tester, has been designed to comfortably test the brakes of all motorcycles regardless of size, weight or wheel size. The neat, compact unit is fitted into the floor and all readings are taken from a wall mounted remote console, ensuring complete freedom from obstruction in the testing area. Testing could not be more simple - just ride on and the BT5000 MkII does the rest, testing the brakes and weighing the bike with a user-friendly remote control handset to command the operation. Class 1 and 2 VTS layout The illustration (left) shows a typical example of how a motorcycle MOT bay can be laid out. Equipment positioning will be subject to your own particular preference and architectural situation, as well as the opinion of your VI Inspector. The following points should also be observed: • The brake tester must be 1.22m clear of any entrance / exit. • The brake testing area is taken from the centre roller of the brake tester (see drawing below). • Entrance to the MOT bay must be a minimum of 2.3m wide and 2m high. • The datum line is purely a guide to where the headlamp will sit, taking into account the wheel must remain in the standing area.

Modern diesel engines need to generate up to 2000+ bar of fuel pressure to run efficiently. Any air in the fuel delivery system will affect the running of the engine. When the fuel system is being serviced and a new fuel filter is fitted air will be introduced into the system. Most modern systems are either self bleeding or have a hand pump permanently fitted to the vehicle, however many can still take some time to purge the system of any air. There are two basic types of fuel delivery used on modern diesel engines: • Pressure fed - using an electric fuel pump mounted in the tank to push the fuel up to the high pressure pump. • Vacuum fed - using an engine driven lift pump to generate a vacuum that pulls the fuel up to the high pressure pump.This kit has been developed to allow the user to connect into as many diesel fuel systems as possible using the correct style connector coupling.
