MSA LAUNCHES MONTHLY PRIZE DRAW FOR MARSHALS Coinciding with the inaugural FIA Volunteers Day, the MSA has launched a new monthly prize draw for marshals in recognition of their invaluable contribution to UK motorsport, with exclusive prizes on offer courtesy of drivers, teams, events, championships and more. Each month at least one person – often more – will be picked at random from the MSA’s database of registered marshals. They will each win a special prize and receive a signed certificate of recognition from Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, on behalf of the governing body. The first prizes, for May, are two Tour de Corse programmes signed by four-times FIA World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier, kindly provided by M-Sport. The two lucky winners are: Richard Drake Hailing from Leeds, Richard has been marshalling on and off for 15 years and is a regular on the Grizedale Stages, along with his brothers. They marshal on the event so regularly that they have a corner named after them: Drakes Corner. David Mann David, from Bungay, has been involved in motor sport for over 40 years as a volunteer and more than 30 as a competitor. David is a member of the Sporting Car Club of Norfolk and can be found at events all over the country. Rob Jones said: “It gives us great pleasure to launch this new prize draw in recognition of UK marshals on FIA Volunteers Day. It cannot be said often enough that without marshals there would be no motorsport; the wider motorsport community has a collective duty to show its appreciation for all that they do, and this new initiative is our latest way of saying ‘thank you’.” Meanwhile the MSA has sent over 8000 registered marshals a welcome pack comprising an MSA-branded tabard, flask, whistle, hand warmer, pens and a ‘thank you’ card. Anyone who registered by 24 March but has yet to receive their pack should email training@msauk.org. The packs will continue until the end of 2017, when alternative initiatives will be considered. From June the MSA is also adding a dedicated volunteers section to MSA Extra, which it hopes will develop over time to become a key source of information for the sport’s volunteering community of registered marshals and licensed officials. MOTORSPORT WORLD CELEBRATES FIA VOLUNTEERS DAY Today (12 May) marks FIA Volunteers Day, celebrating those who dedicate their time to make motorsport possible around the world. Throughout the day, the entire motorsport community are encouraged to join in and show their appreciation on social media using the hashtag #FIAVolunteersDay. “This is an opportunity to embrace the day as an occasion to thank all volunteers who support our events at all levels,” said FIA President, Jean Todt. “It will also promote the positive benefits that they gain from their involvement in motor sport, and help attract new people to get involved. “It is important for the FIA to give the appropriate recognition and publicity to acknowledge that each volunteer’s commitment is an essential part in ensuring the safety and success of every motor sport event.” The day falls on a packed weekend of FIA competition. The Spanish FIA Formula One Grand Prix and FIA Formula 2 race, FIA World Touring Car Championship race in Hungary, FIA World Rallycross event in Belgium, FIA Formula E Monaco ePrix and FIA European Truck Racing Championship race in Austria will lead the celebrations, with activities taking place to celebrate the marshals, race officials and medical staff that devote their time with no financial remuneration.

MOTORSPORT IN HUGE OUTPOURING OF SUPPORT FOR INJURED MONGER Hundreds of people took part in a track walk at Thruxton last weekend in support of Billy Monger, following a global wave of support from the motorsport community. All of the cars running on the weekend’s TOCA package also displayed #BillyWhizz decals. A JustGiving page set up to raise £260,000 for Monger’s future has generated over £800,000 in less than a month. All within the motor sport family are greatly encouraged to hear of Billy Monger’s courageous and positive response to his circumstances and the MSA continues to send best wishes to Billy Monger and his family as he starts his journey towards recovery and rehabilitation. We all look forward to seeing him racing again in the future. Patrik Pasma has made a full recovery from his injuries and raced last weekend at Thruxton. A technical examination of the cars was conducted by representatives of the Global Institute for Motor Sport Safety, the FIA and MSA on Thursday 20 April at Donington Park Circuit. The MSA and the Global Institute, which is leading the technical investigation, met with representatives of the teams and championship on Thursday 4 May at Donington Park Circuit to allow access to the cars of Billy Monger and Patrik Pasma. The cars have now been released back to the teams. The Global Institute is the safety research partner of the FIA and undertakes research to improve motor sport safety worldwide. Incident investigations often yield findings that can be utilised to improve safety within the sport and it is expected that recommendations will be made as a result of the investigation into this incident. The MSA would like to take this opportunity to thank all volunteers and officials who were involved in the response to the incident and who continue to assist in the ongoing investigation.

CLOSED-ROAD GUIDANCE DOCUMENTS PUBLISHED The MSA has issued outline guidance documents for event organisers wishing to run closed-road events under new legislation that commenced on 10 April. The legislation represents the culmination of a seven-year MSA campaign for a change in the law to allow local authorities to suspend the Road Traffic Act for authorised motorsport events, without requiring individual Acts of Parliament. The commencement order names the MSA and its sister governing body for two-wheel UK motorsport, the Auto-Cycle Union (ACU), as the two authorising bodies for closed-road events. The MSA has now produced three documents to assist prospective event organisers: A guideline document outlining the application process A flow diagram summarising the application process An updated guide to track licensing to include closed-road venues in England.

Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “The news that our campaign to bring closed-road motorsport to mainland Britain had taken a major step towards completion, with the publication of the commencement order for England, was met with great excitement by the UK motorsport community. Many were quick to imagine the kind of events that we might soon see on closed public roads, and some MSAregistered clubs will no doubt be starting to formulate their own plans. “Westminster has entrusted the MSA to provide this new facility to those event organisers, who will appreciate the high level of responsibility and diligence that it entails. These guidance documents outline the process that they must follow and we look forward to receiving initial applications.”

MSA SUBMITS RESPONSE TO VNUK CONSULTATION The MSA has submitted its response to the government’s consultation on Vnuk, a 2014 European Court judgement that threatens the future of all UK motorsport. The court ruled that EU countries must look again at how they have enacted EU motor insurance law in each country. The court interpretation would require all motorsport vehicles to have compulsory third party motor insurance. As a result, the UK government launched a consultation in December 2016 about changes to our Road Traffic Act. The MSA has now entered its response as the four wheel governing body. Many other organisation have also responded. The MSA’s preferred solution is for motorsport to be excluded from the EU’s motor insurance directive. This is also the UK government’s preferred option. Unfortunately the EU has announced further delays to its review process, and so the government may be forced to bring in the insurance requirements, with devastating effect on motor sport. MSA CHILD SAFEGUARDING POLICY PUBLISHED The MSA has launched a revised child safeguarding policy to help provide a safe and positive environment for all young people in motorsport. All MSA-registered clubs are required to adopt the policy, which has been designed to be more user-friendly. There is a template policy document that clubs can use, plus a range of guidance documents on topics such as DBS checks. The policy includes – but is not limited to – a requirement for all clubs to: Appoint one or more Child Safeguarding Officer (CSO) Inform the MSA Lead Safeguarding Officer of the CSO and maintain current personal contact details Include child safeguarding matters at their management committees and keep records of all discussions Provide support for the CSO and ensure they are included in club communications. CAPTAIN JEAN-LUC PICARD TO RACE AT SILVERSTONE Acting legend Sir Patrick Stewart OBE has passed his ARDS test and will take part in a special Celebrity Challenge Trophy Race at the Silverstone Classic on Saturday 29 July. The 76-year-old movie star famously played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the iconic Star Trek sci-fi series as well as Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films. “It was a lot of fun,” said Stewart. “For someone who has followed motor racing since being a teenager, to drive around Silverstone and negotiate such legendary corners as Becketts and Stowe is just such a thrill.”

The MSA is seeking nominations for individuals to join the Specialist Committees that represent the interests of the various ‘disciplines’ of motorsport. The Specialist Committees meet two or three times a year, normally at Motor Sports House, to discuss and debate new regulations and other issues. The following Specialist Committees may have vacancies available for next year: Autotest Committee Cross Country Committee Historic Committee Kart Committee Kart Technical Sub Committee Race Committee Rallies Committee Autocross & Rallycross Sub Committee Dragster Sub Committee Sprint & Hill Climb Sub Committee Trials Committee.

All applicants must be members of an MSA recognised motor club or Regional Association, which must ‘sponsor’ the application. MOTOR SPORTS COUNCIL SEEKS HOME COUNTRIES REPRESENTATIVES The Motor Sports Council acts as a Sporting Commission, approving and amending rules proposed by its Committees or Advisory Panels. The Council also discusses other issues surrounding motorsport throughout the UK. Currently there are three Council representatives from the Home Countries: Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Committee Review Panel has decided to open this representation to applicants and the Panel therefore seeks nominations to represent Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and also England on Council in 2018. Successful nominations would be required to attend Council meetings during the year (currently three) and also to produce Home Country reports on motorsport activities for each Council agenda. There are no formal qualifications required other than a commitment to and experience in motorsport. News obituaries

RON COTTRELL, 1957-2017 The motorsport community will be saddened to learn of the death of Ron Cottrell. Born with cerebral palsy, Ron was a pupil at Valence School for Handicapped Children, the venue used by the local Sevenoaks & District Motor Club to organise an annual speed hill climb. It was this event and the late John Surtees dropping by at the school that fired Ron’s lifetime passion for motorsport. Ron soon got involved in the hill climb; once he got mobile in an Invacar, Ron spent all day buzzing about fetching and carrying. With his trade mark tartan cap he was a familiar figure at motorsport events, particularly in the South East. Come the time when his mobility was starting to drift away he retired and was delighted to become an MSA Official d’Honneur. Typically for Ron he took the role seriously, seeing it as a responsibility for him to act in an ambassadorial role while visiting many events. Undoubtedly a pain in the neck, such was a factor in the success Ron made of his life. Ron was other things, too: caring, generous and an inspiration to all. Most people who knew Ron will have a few ‘Ron stories’ and will remember him with a laugh or two and as someone who simply endeavoured to get on with life despite the cards with which he had been dealt. Paying tribute to Ron, Sir Jackie Stewart said: “Ron was a remarkable man who lived an incredible life, considering his disabilities. His enthusiasm for motorsport was immense, as was his bravery, in putting up with all that his illness created. It’s a sadness that Ron has passed away, but a blessing that he is no longer in pain.”

SIR JOHN WHITMORE, 1937-2017

The MSA sends its condolences to the family and friends of Sir John Whitmore, who passed away earlier this month. Sir John was a star of saloon and sportscar racing, whose achievements included winning the British Saloon Car Championship (BSCC) title in 1961 aboard an 848cc BMC Morris Mini-Minor that he bought for just £400. Underlining his talent as one of the greatest saloon car exponents of his era, Sir John finished second in the overall classification the following season, just two points behind the late Jack Sears. Further touring cars successes followed in a Lotus Cortina – notably when dominating the European Touring Car Championship in 1965. Sir John retired from the sport at the end of 1966 but, in recent times, had returned to driving at selected historic events.

MSA SEEKS ENVIRONMENTAL NOMINATIONS The governing body is seeking nominations for the 2017 MSA Environmental Award, which recognises truly exceptional or outstanding contributions towards environmental responsibility and the active promotion of sustainability within motor sport activities, events and communications. Recent winners include Anglesey Circuit, Greenpower, Williams Hybrid Power and Rt Hon The Lord Drayson. If successful, the latest winner will receive the prestigious trophy during the MSA Night of Champions ceremony at the Royal Automobile Club in London next January.

PRINCE MICHAEL AWARD OPEN FOR NOMINATIONS Nominations papers are available for the 2017 HRH Prince Michael Award of Merit, the highest personal award made by the Motor Sports Council. The award is given to a maximum of two recipients per year in recognition of meritorious service to UK motor sport. Nomination papers are available directly from the MSA and should be returned before the end of October.

COMMITTEE NOMINATIONS SOUGHT

RESCUE CREWS TRAIN AT THRUXTON Early season Rescue Crew training at Thruxton saw seven crews from across the south practice and refine their skills and teamwork in a series of exercises. The training scenarios were based on incidents that have occurred or could happen for real. BARC’s Martin Hunt said: “The training is to push the crews to build on their knowledge, at the same time

AUTOSOLO RIDES AT DONINGTON HISTORIC FESTIVAL If you like the sort of tests at the Hildebrand Barracks offered on the recent Ilkley Jubilee Rally, you would have loved the flowing autoSOLO course set up by Loughborough Car Club and Mid Derbyshire Motor Club at the Donington Historic Festival, writes Kevin Bryant. I enjoyed three 45-minute sessions driving donating punters (£2 per ride to the air ambulance) around the 0.39-mile

autoSOLO circuit, which proved to be an addictive experience for a number of young lads. I talked to them about my car and their cars. We talked about their motorsport experiences and ambitions. Do I think some of them will take up motorsport sometime soon? Well perhaps not this year but within the next four or five years, definitely.

If they run it again next year, I urge you to spend a day at the festival. You’ll get to have a play in your car, talk about your car, meet some great people and help to encourage a few to participate in motorsport. And you know that punters would rather have a run out in your classic than a modern saloon. You’ll also have the time to see some very fine cars and racing at the Donington Historic Festival.

Technical Updates, clarifications and advice

HARNESS MOUNTING A scrutineer noticed the harness installation pictured at a recent Sprint event. It shows the mounting eye-bolt for the harness lap strap being attached directly to the seat’s side mount.

KART AXLE FAILURE Broken rear axles on karts remain an area of concern for the MSA, as this image from a recent event shows. Competitors and teams and advised to check rear axles for any early signs of cracks, or for the ‘perforation’ effect of the multiple tightening of the grub screw against the axle. Regular guidance on this matter though MSA publications and Scrutineers has reduced the rate of reported failures but the governing body continues to urge vigilance.

TYRES FOR UNSEALED SURFACE STAGE RALLIES Competitors are reminded that for unsealed surface Stage Rallies running under the various Forest Estates agreements, any tyres used must be as per Section (L) Tyre List 6. Scrutineers have been provided with images and drawings of the tread patterns for each tyre to help them check eligibility on-event.

All of the regulations relating to harness installation for three-, four-, five- and six-point arrangements ((K)2.1.1 – (K)2.1.4) refer to the mounting points being ‘on the chassis/body shell or roll over bar of the vehicle’. Anchoring to the seat mount does not meet this requirement and therefore is not permitted.

KART TYRES TENDER The MSA has launched a tender process for the supply of tyres to the KZ2 and KZ UK kart classes from 2018 for three years from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2020. MSA MARSHALS – COMPLETION OF YOUR PERSONAL RECORD CARD The MSA Training Department wishes to issue some reminders regarding Personal Record Cards (PRCs). All MSA-registered marshals should have the latest version of the PRC; if not, please email charlotte. moore@msauk.org. Maintenance of grade requirements

MSA ACCEPTING SINGLEDISCIPLINE STEWARDS As previously reported in MSA Extra, the governing body is now accepting applications from those wishing to become a Steward in their one preferred discipline. In the past, all applicants wishing to become a Trainee MSA Steward had to attend a number of events in each discipline, however the MSA has relaxed this requirement. Three people have become single-discipline Stewards to date, while a further 14 are currently undergoing training. For further information, email training@msauk.org. FAST-TRACKING TRAINEE MSA STEWARDS All National A Clerks can now apply for fast-tracking to become single-discipline Trainee MSA Stewards. This allows for an individual to undertake a reduced Trainee Stewards Modular Training Programme (MTP) due to the fact that many requirements of the training programme have already been satisfied as part of their Clerk of Course MTP. For information on how to apply please contact the MSA’s Stewards Administrator, James Betchley via email james.betchley@msauk.org.

All marshals are required to meet the ‘maintenance of grade’ requirements for their discipline. The requirements can be found via the following links: Race; Specialist; Speed; Kart; Rally/Cross Country. Completion of the PRCs Guidance notes on the completion of the PRCs have been issued by the MSA for Race and Speed; the Rally guidance notes are still in draft format and will be published soon. These notes include advice on who can sign PRCs, what is required to achieve a signature and the route to upgrading. POST CHIEFS IN RACE CONTROL – A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY Marshals wishing to progress through the MSA Marshals Grading Scheme require training and experience. Most of that experience is gathered while performing normal duties but the MSA Training Department would like to encourage further activities.

Nadine Lewis, Chairman of the Marshals Working Group, said: “Post Chiefs in particular are not always able to spend time on post with peers. Why not request a day in Race Control to help gain an understanding of what happens to your reports when submitted and also to see the workings of the Clerks and Race communications?

“Ask the Chief Marshal of an event if this would be possible. They can then liaise with the club and Clerks to confirm this is acceptable. The Clerks will then be able to sign your PRC card for attendance and you will have a great day of learning and insight.”

GRANDFATHER RIGHTS SCHEME AVAILABLE TO EXPERIENCED MARSHALS Marshals are advised that there is a ‘grandfather rights’ scheme for those with appropriate experience who wish to register with the governing body for the first time without reverting to the Accredited or Trainee Marshal grades.

Currently this scheme is only available to Rally/Cross Country and Speed marshals. Kart and Race marshals should seek guidance from their club. The forms can be downloaded from the MSA’s website here:

RECOVERY TRAINERS GAIN NEW QUALIFICATION All MSA Licensed Recovery Assessors and Trainers attended a recent Train the Trainers course in Shropshire. The LANTRA Technical Award in Health and Safety and Risk Management in Winching covered all aspects of safe winching techniques and provided delegates with a nationally recognised qualification. Ian Culbert, Chairman of the Association of Motorsport Recovery Operators (AMRO ), said: “The AMRO, whose membership is made up of around 80 per cent of all MSA licensed Recovery units and crews, were delighted to have been asked to take part. The opportunity to receive formal training to a recognised national standard was very welcome, and it was also a good opportunity for Trainers and Assessors from all parts of the UK to get together and share knowledge and ideas.” Feedback from attendees was also positive. James Bates, an MSA Recovery Assessor, Trainer and unit operator, said: “For a one-day course it was very informative and having the chance to work together and share ideas with other assessor’s was a huge advantage to all of us, and we all took new ideas and techniques away with us. We all look forward to sharing these techniques and skills with others crews around the country.”

RALLY EXTRICATION TRAINER WELL RECEIVED The British Motor Sports Training Trust (BMSTT) has funded an FIA Rally Extrication Trainer, for use at MSA Marshals and Rescue Training Days. The trainer, complete with competition seats and belts, is transportable in a small van and is an excellent training aid for Marshals, Medics and Rescue crews. The trainer has been used at a number of events so far this year and has been extremely well received. Bob Sheridan, MSA Race Rescue Instructor and Paramedic, said: “The MSA are to be congratulated on the development of this new Extrication Training Frame. It will allow Rescue and Extrication Teams the chance to broaden and build on both their individual and team skills.” This rally extrication trainer has enabled crews to practice in their teams and develop the relevant skills. RallyFuture Helping to ensure a bright future for stage rallying in the UK

REMINDER: UPDATED SRSRS PUBLISHED The MSA has published the latest edition of its Stage Rally Safety Requirements (SRSRs), the template for the organisation of all UK stage rallies. This latest revision comes into effect from 1 July 2017 and includes a complete renumbering of the requirements in a style similar to the MSA Blue Book. There are also new annexes including: Predicted Marshal Strength; Competitor Briefing; Splits and Merges; Risk Assessment Templates; and First-on-Scene. There are also revisions to existing annexes covering the media, service areas and refuelling. The update is available in two formats. First there is a straightforward updated version of the main document. Secondly and alternatively, the updates will be available as a supplementary sheet to the existing main document.

MSA SAFETY CAR COURSES 2017

In line with the requirements of the Stage Rally Safety Requirements, from 1 January 2018 at least one member of each Safety Car Crew must have attended one of the MSA Safety Car workshops. To facilitate this requirement, the MSA intends to deliver four one-day workshops across the UK from Mid-June. As per 2016, Clerks of Course of events will be requested to nominate individuals to attend these courses.

GoMotorsport Developing club motorsport for people of all ages and backgrounds

EXMOUTH MOTOR CLUB As a small but significant club in the South West, Exmouth Motor Club long ago learnt the benefits of supporting other clubs’ events – a practice that has paid dividends many times over with reciprocal support for their own events, writes Kevin Moore, South West RDO. In the current climate it is far too easy for a smaller club to fall off the radar and disappear into oblivion. With Exmouth Motor Club this is now far from the case. Backed by an enthusiastic and very experienced team, the club organises some key events at both regional championship status and also at grassroots level, encouraging involvement for the clubman and newcomers alike. Exmouth MC has faced the same challenges common to many motor clubs – the same people organising the events and the lack of venues for events such as autoSOLOs to name just two. The club has successfully pulled itself clear of such issues by encouraging younger members’ active involvement at committee level. Having lost their autoSOLO venue they have embraced other events in their calendar and focused their efforts in areas such as their successful 12 Car series. Newcomers are encouraged to take part and they are further supported with training nights to make having a go less daunting. This initiative is paying dividends, with around a third of the competing crews including members new to the sport. While concentrating their efforts on proven events and disciplines, an eye is kept open for new venues and opportunities. Exmouth MC is quick to make use of new venues as and when they become available, tapping into the MSA Taster permit initiative whenever possible in order to encourage new participants. The influx of younger members into the operational side of the club has brought the added bonus of club promotion through social media. The use of Facebook is now becoming more accepted by motor clubs as a valid promotional tool. Looking from the outside in, there is a definite air of positivity around Exmouth MC and its events, which becomes more apparent with each of my visits as their RDO. The club has maintained a strong foundation on which to build and this is something they should be proud of.

Events All clubs need to publicise and promote themselves so why not give local shows, fetes and carnivals a try, asks Bryn Pound, West Midlands RDO? An eye-catching display of cars with motorsport videos playing in the background will draw the crowds in but clubs must be ready to engage with the public and provide them with club information. Shopping centres have space for static displays and will give you a large footfall of potential members. But be prepared to interact with the public, many of whom will only think of Formula 1 when you mention motorsport. With the ever-increasing need to recruit new club members, one way to gain interest is to run a taster event in a different discipline that may be new to your club. Why not try Autocross, a great discipline with very few modifications needed to the car to compete and competition is fierce. Introduce AutoSOLOs, navigational scatters, trials or treasure hunts to your club calendar and awaken the competitive streak in your club members. This also gives the noncompetitors a chance to compete in standard cars and the regular competitors a chance at organising. The emphasis should always be on having fun so make the events enjoyable for the potential new members and have experienced competitors available to help the new competitor when they need it. With summer approaching now is the time to promote your club with new events, either competitive or social, and bring in new members to your club.

Go Motorsport Club Development

AIREDALE AND PENNINE MOTOR CLUB Nearly all motor clubs are run by volunteers, writes Steve Johnson, North West RDO. In 2013 Neil Andrews of Airedale and Pennine Motor Club attended an MSA Training Course and found great interest in the club development presentation. Airedale and Pennine Motor Club was set up in 1960 and like many motor clubs had an interest in several disciplines: autotests, hill climbs, marshalling, rallying, sprinting, car trials etc. By 2013 they were running just two events a year and, with an ageing membership, struggled to attract new blood to the club. Neil contacted the Go Motorsport RDOs and a meeting was set up to see how a Production Car Autotest (PCA) could be a way of getting younger drivers to join Airedale and Pennine Motor Club. Venues for all motorsport events are hard to find. In 2014 a contact at Bradford Council found a shale car park next to a sports centre for the first few PCA events. These ran as evening sessions with local drivers invited.

In 2015 Airedale and Pennine Motor Club put on a PCA at Harewood Hill Climb. This gave the hill climb spectators a taste of club motor sport and raised money for the local Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Club members took part in four timed tests over the weekend, while also providing passenger rides for a modest contribution to charity. As well as raising just over ÂŁ100, the club welcomed eight new members. At the start of 2016 the club built on this enthusiasm by looking to run PCA events in a local pub car park near Bradford. APMC ran several events for the first few months of the year until the pub closed in mid-2016. By the end of the year a new landlord had taken over and allowed APMC to return for 2017, with club nights and a series of

six PCA events scheduled from January to April. These events at ÂŁ15 entry fees, have been a great success, with mainly club members and new members taking part and the odd driver from clubs within SD34 Motor Sport Group. The club has also organised two car trials this year, providing lots of affordable motorsport to new members. Like many motor clubs, APMC has a core committee and a few active members. The club is also active on Facebook and has a website; these are vital for communicating upcoming events and meetings to members. Has Airedale & Pennine Motor Club found a winning formula?

GoMo Bringing newcomers to the sport

GET INVOLVED Once inside the ‘motor sport bubble’ most things are clear to us, writes Andrew Bisping, Southern RDO. We know how clubs run, how to find and enter events and the routine for event days: signing on, scrutineering, briefings, being in the right place at the right time, results and awards. But to outsiders it can be a mystery, a strange world that can be seen but too easily ignored. Can we challenge ourselves to do more, step outside our bubble, or better still burst it and engage more effectively to welcome new club members, competitors and volunteers? Having talked to many people at the Autosport International show and when supporting clubs at public events it’s clear that one of the most important things we can do is to talk to people and show them it’s easier to get involved than they might think. My top tips are: 99 It’s about people more than cars. Approach people with a smile and start talking to them about their interests, their car, what they might want to do what they can afford

99 Describe the kind of things they can do that fit those aspirations, with examples, ideally helped by another club member who started from a similar place 99 Give them the key facts they need to demystify our sport. Give enough information but avoid overload 99 Identify simple next steps to follow. Write them down or exchange details like email addresses to you can follow up 99 Invite them to the next club night and ring them beforehand to remind them, as it’s hard to turn down a personal invitation. Look after the new person and introduce them to other members with common interests 99 Help them to find and enter their first event

99 Recruit a buddy/mentor for that first event to smooth the path through it so they come back 99 Get feedback after the event and help them make future plans – ask what you and your club could have done to make things easier. The principles are exactly the same for volunteering roles. If you think this is all simple common sense stuff, you’re right. But do we always remember this? I bet 90 per cent of the time, author included, we forget the obvious. If you want to make this a discussion at one of your club nights why not invite your RDO along to support you and share ideas of what has worked well for others?

Go Motorsport MSA Motor Sport Development Funds

The MSA Motor Sport Development Fund, formerly known as the Club Development Fund, has helped many clubs upgrade their materials and equipment, ensuring that events across the country are run to extremely high standards, writes Jonathan MacDonald, Northern Ireland RDO. A little over one year ago, Cookstown Motor Club made great use of the fund to help the club satisfy new regulations surrounding stage rally safety signage. “The fund considerably reduced the cost for our motor club to upgrade our materials for use on our stage rally,” said Bob McKeown, Clerk of the Course for most of his club’s events. “We’ve also been able to use the same materials on our targa rallies too. We very much appreciate the grant.” Meanwhile Ballynahinch Motorsport Rescue Unit (BMRU) availed of the BMSTT Rescue Development Fund to help them upgrade their cutting equipment. “We changed our cutting equipment from hydraulic to battery operated,” said Training Co-ordinator Philip Bryans. “There’s no way we could have done that without help from the fund. It’s easy enough to apply for, you just fill in the form.”

A real focus has been made to ensure that it’s easy for clubs to apply. Brief Volunteering history to present?

I started marshalling on 12 car rallies with my father from as long back as I can remember, moving on to organising both road and forestry stage events, plus competing for a number of years on everything from small club events to the Lombard/Network Q RAC rally. I was the BTRDA runner-up co-driver twice in the 1980s. I have always tried to put something back into the sport for the years of fun, other volunteers have allowed me to indulge as a competitor. Hopefully I can help in some small way to bringing on the next Colin or Richard.

When I was a small boy meeting the likes of Roger Clark, then as I got older people like Ari, Colin and others – volunteering allows you to get up close to your idols, meet and even speak to them.

What piece of advice would you give to a new volunteer?

Join your local Car Club, go with them on events to help, try it, you will love it.
