DAVID RICHARDS TO BECOME NEXT MSA CHAIRMAN David Richards CBE, one of the motorsport industry’s most globally successful figures, has been selected as Chairman-elect of the MSA. Richards will assume the position of Non-Executive Chairman from 1 January 2018, succeeding Alan Gow, who steps down on 31 December 2017 after 12 years in the role. The appointment follows a thorough process led by a professional search firm, in conjunction with a panel comprising Non-Executive Directors of the MSA. As the next Chairman of the MSA Board, Richards will be responsible for the overall strategy and direction of the organisation, which represents approximately 30,000 competitors, 10,000 volunteer marshals and officials, and 750 clubs. David Richards said: “Having started out as a competitor and more recently run my own teams in a wide variety of motor sport categories I’m honoured to be asked, at this stage of my career, to Chair the MSA. I’m really looking forward to this new challenge and trust that my fifty years of experience, in almost every facet of the sport, can now be put to good use.” Alan Gow said: “I have known David, as both a friend and previous business partner, for over 25 years. I have no doubt David will take on this new role with great enthusiasm and I’m delighted that he is my successor.” Richards is the founder and Chairman of Prodrive, an internationally successful motorsport and technology company employing more than 500 people in Banbury and Milton Keynes. Since 1984 Prodrive has won six FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) titles, running
the Subaru Imprezas of legendary drivers such as Colin McRae, Richard Burns and Petter Solberg. Prodrive has also won four MSA British Touring Car Championships and four Le Mans 24 Hours. It managed the BAR Honda Formula One team for three seasons in the early-2000s, achieving second place in the 2004 constructors’ championship, and is currently the driving force behind Aston Martin Racing. Richards discovered his passion for the sport as a teenager, when watching the RAC Rally in Clocaenog Forest near his home in North Wales. He went on to compete in club level rallies, first as a driver before switching to the navigator’s seat. His crowning achievement as a competitor was co-driving Finnish legend Ari Vatanen to the 1981 WRC title aboard a Ford Escort RS1800. In 2005 Richards was appointed a CBE for his services to motorsport.

MSA LAUNCHES TENDER PROCESS FOR BRITISH KART CHAMPIONSHIPS The MSA has launched a tender process for the organisation and promotion of the three MSA British Kart Championships from 2018. In the tender document the governing body is seeking interested parties to run and promote the MSA British Kart Championship, MSA British Junior Kart Championship and MSA British Cadet Kart Championship for a minimum period of three years from 1 January 2018. The tender document is available on the MSA website via the following link: MSA British Kart Championships Submissions should be received by the MSA at Motor Sports House by no later than 12.00 noon on 14 July 2017, marked for the attention of Sheila Barter, Executive Office Services Manager.
ORGANISERS’ STATEMENT ON 2017 MULL RALLY
It is a matter of considerable regret for the organisers and the MSA that the Beatson’s Building Supplies Mull Rally cannot run as a closed road event in 2017 due to insurmountable insurance issues. MSA Chief Executive Rob Jones explained: “The Mull Rally runs under a private Act of Parliament and it has emerged that the private closed road legislation raises very significant insurance challenges for Mull this year which was first thought to render the Mull Rally uninsurable. “MSA has been endeavouring to find a solution with its brokers and whilst the brokers have offered a potential solution for 2017 this is unfortunately totally impractical as each and every claim under the policy would be subject to a very significant excess payable by the organisers, and one which the organisers cannot afford.” Consequently the Mull Rally is unable to run as a closed road event this year. Andy Jardine, Clerk of the Course, said: “This development has come as a massive shock as we were well on with a lot of the early work of setting the route and preparing the paperwork. Our attention is now focussed on what can be done in the short timescale to make sure something happens over the weekend.” To read the full statement, visit www.mullrally.org.

DISABLED DRIVER SCHOLARS ANNOUNCED Two people have won a free season’s club level motorsport with Loughborough Car Club as part of its innovative Disabled Driver Scholarship. Marie Burnside from Wolverhampton and Peacehaven’s Billy Taylor came out on top of an assessment day aboard the club’s specially adapted Nissan Micra. Their first event is expected to be on 6 June. Burnside said: “It was a great day, I met some lovely people who gave me good advice when driving the car, and for me to have been chosen for the scholarship feels fantastic!” Loughborough Car Club’s Richard Egger added: “The club runs this scheme because we believe that club events such as autoSOLOs are the ideal activity for disabled drivers to start to compete on equal terms on a moderate budget. This is our tenth year and in that time we have met some seriously nice people and had a lot of fun.” For more information on opportunities for the disabled in motorsport, click HERE. MSA WELCOMES VSCC ‘SAFETY FIRST’ INITIATIVE The Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC)’s Dave Salmon and Gemma Price have met with MSA Safety Director Kate Adamson to introduce Safety First, a new campaign aimed at improving safety standards for its competitors. The VSCC recognises that historic competition vehicles are privileged in being able to balance the need for modern safety modifications against the desire to retain period specifications. The club wishes to take a proactive role in safeguarding that privilege and supporting its 6000 members. The campaign’s objective is to engage the VSCC’s members and foster a culture whereby competitors fully understand and accept their personal responsibilities. There is also a system of mentoring novice drivers. In developing Safety First, the VSCC’s Safety Working Group considered which areas of risk should be addressed, including fitness to compete and standards of vehicle preparation.
8
Indeed vehicle preparation was the subject of an open letter to competitors in a recent VSCC newsletter, which gave advice on fluid management, expected standards of preparation, the potential penalties for non-conformance and the level of checks to be anticipated during scrutineering. This is supported by poster campaigns at signingon, education during drivers’ briefings, random inspections in the paddock and vehicle paperwork audits. The issue of competitor fitness can be emotive, meaning that medical conditions are not always referred to the MSA as they should be. The VSCC is addressing this and related issues in various ways, including a confidential medication declaration form, competitor education and random alcohol testing.
Competitors have also been advised that they can check the prohibited status of prescription or over-the-counter medications quickly and easily at www. globaldro.com. All of this work is further supported by the Competitor Safety Advisor, who provides support and guidance to competitors. Adamson said: “While some may be circumspect about these developments, it should be acknowledged that self-policing our sport and safeguarding its future viability while helping to reduce accidents is a welcome approach that should be applauded.” The VSCC is happy to share its initiative with other clubs; visit www.vscc.co.uk.

SILVERSTONE REVEALS NEW RALLYCROSS TRACK The new rallycross circuit at Silverstone, which will host Britain’s round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship from 2018, was unveiled at a media launch last month. Drivers Petter Solberg, Johan Kristoffersson, Andreas Bakkerud, Guy Wilks and Guerlain Chicherit were joined by British Rallycross stars and former WRC driver Mikko Hirvonen, with over 200 media and guests on hand. Paul Bellamy, World RX Managing Director for IMG, said: “It’s always been our desire at IMG to create a large scale festival weekend with World Championship motorsport at the heart of it and we are delighted that Silverstone is able to share our vision for the future. The move comes at a pivotal time in rallycross history with the sport celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and continue its rapid growth.” Next year’s event (25-27 May 2018) will be billed as the SpeedMachine Festival and will include music, food, manufacturer test drives, e-gaming and camping as well as the on-track competition. Further event details including ticket information can be found at www.speedmachine.com.

News the secret life of...
British F4’s Jamie Caroline ‘Winningest’ driver, highest number of wins in a season, most consecutive victories and first person to win all three races in one meeting in the F4 British Championship certified by FIA – powered by Ford EcoBoost. We hear from man of the moment, 18-year-old championship leader Jamie Caroline. Apart from driving a British F4 car, what is your favourite buzz?
Being at a race circuit, whether it’s empty or full of 40,000 people.
Who is your favourite driver?
Lewis Hamilton. He’s the best and I’m the bandit! We’re both good in the wet and we’re both aggressive. We don’t give in or give up, but he’s the man. I’m just a yard boy during the week and doing what I love at the weekends.
What should everyone try once in their lifetime? Motor racing.
What are you afraid of?
My Dad when I have had a crash!
If you could own one Ford road car what would it be?
What’s your favourite film?
Wolf of Wall Street; Leo [di Caprio] is great. That was another person I considered inviting to dinner. Can I add him to the guest list?
What’s the strangest question you’ve ever been asked?
Do you get bored of winning? I’ve been asked it a lot recently and it’s getting boring being asked it! I will never get tired of winning; seeing the happiness of the team and everyone cheering for me as I cross the line.
What’s the most important thing in life?
Family and happiness. If you are not happy with what you are doing then you are not doing the right thing. That’s why I need to make it as a racing driver because that’s when I’m happiest.
Mk1 Escort, Ford Lotus Cortina, a classic Mustang and a GT40. If I make it as a professional paid racing driver they would be the first four cars I would buy. I would like to turn up to a British F4 race weekend in one of those and park it outside the Ford Race Centre. It would look so cool.
What’s your favourite song?
I listen to rap music a lot but I always listen to Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond during my warm-up before I go on track.
You can invite three people to dinner, living or dead. Who do you invite?
Kevin Hart, Will Ferrell and Lewis Hamilton. That would be a right laugh.

HUGE RISE IN REGISTERED MARSHAL MARSHAL HAYDEN RECOGNISED NUMBERS FOR 1000 EVENTS The number of MSA-registered Rally marshal Robert Hayden celebrated his 1000th event as a volunteer on the Severn Valley Stages, where he received a commemorative MSA certificate.
marshals has increased by 48 per cent since December 2015, rising from 6082 to 8994.
Seventy-year-old Hayden (pictured, right, with MSA’s Head of Communications) has been a member of several motor clubs in the West Midlands over the years and won Monarch Auto Club’s marshals award 12 years in a row. He has been helping to set up stages on Dayinsure Wales Rally GB for 25 years and has also competed on single-venue events as a navigator.
Part of this increase may be attributed to the successful uptake of the MSA’s online rally marshals training modules, which were launched in January 2016. Since the start of this year it has been a requirement for all those marshalling alone on UK stage rallies to have completed the modules.
Hayden, who recently passed his Gold Advanced driving test, is a familiar face within marshalling circles and is known across the country by his nickname, The Bear.
BMMC MEMBERS GET 60TH ANNIVERSARY GIFTS As part of its 60th anniversary celebrations, the British Motorsport Marshals Club (BMMC) has sent a ‘goody bag’ to its 2,200 members. The packs were 90 per cent funded by the BMMC, with a little help from Ginetta and NGK. The contents include a cap, patches, lanyard, flask and marshal-themed USB stick. A special feature celebrating the BMMC’s diamond anniversary can be found in the summer 2017 issue of MSA magazine, landing on MSA members’ doormats from 19 June. www.msauk.org
Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “Understandably there was some initial scepticism as to whether existing rally marshals with many years’ experience would undertake the online training but we’re delighted that our figures show a substantial uptake. This allows us to ensure and demonstrate that all rally marshals have a common understanding of their roles and responsibilities. As ever, we thank all our marshals for their invaluable contribution to UK motorsport.” The MSA has recently sent all registered marshals a welcome pack including a tabard, flask, torch, hand-warmer, pens and a ‘thank you’ card.

Volunteers TWENTY YEARS OF MARSHALS CLUB SPRINT The BMMC Midland Sprint at Curborough marked its 20th anniversary last month, having begun in 1997 as the brainchild of Steve Hill, who continues to run it with his wife, Julie.
SCOTTISH EVENT HIGHLIGHTS DIVERSITY OF MARSHALS Among the volunteers running the Inter-Association Cross Country Event (10-11 June) were a stalwart marshal whose interest in the sport dates back to the 1960s, alongside a relative newcomer with four years’ experience. Peter Stewart, aged 90 from Paisley, is a member of the Scottish Hill Rally Club Ltd and the Scottish Land Rover Owners Club (SLROC). His involvement in motorsport began aboard a Series 1 and Series 2 Land Rover and he went on to become a championship winner. In 2005 Stewart bought a Land Rover Discovery and began marshalling on events. He switched to Cross Country marshalling in 2009 and remains active to this day, marshalling on at least four Hill Rallies per year. He registered with the MSA in 2015 and is also a Life Member of the 4WDNI club.
Since then the event has developed so well that it usually has reserves for the August meeting and a strong turnout in May. It has also turned a profit every year, now totalling over £65,000.00 which has gone straight into BMMC club funds. Attracting new championships to the events is always a challenge and this year the May sprint will see the return of the Lotus 7 Club GB and Westfield Sports Car Club, as well as the regular Curborough Championship. The August Sprint will also be a round of the Porsche Club GB Sprint Championship for the second time. Juicy Rally Photography
“I enjoy it – it’s my life,” said Stewart. “I would encourage the younger generation to get out there and enjoy life, they all seem too screenorientated these days!”
David Pierre, Midland Region Chairman at the time, authorised the first event on the condition that must make a profit of at least £1 if it was to remain a fixture. The event faltered due to a lack of entries but Steve had already secured a sponsor, which he convinced to pay the BMMC £1 and thus secure its return.
In contrast, a relatively new marshal could also be found at Forrest Estate. Dunfirline Car Club’s Christina Samway first visited a rally in 1982 and has been interested ever since. Samway has now been marshalling for four years and is working towards her timing and radio marshal grades; she gained her final signatures last weekend. “I love being involved in a supporting role,” said Samway. “It’s the closest I can get to participating without actually doing so. The most important thing about motorsport is you will be welcomed with open arms and everyone will look after you.”

MSA STAFFERS JOIN THE ORANGE ARMY A number of MSA staff members have enjoyed volunteering on a range of events so far this year, from club level meetings to national races and rallies. Development Assistant Charlotte Moore was a specialist marshal at Thruxton for the BTCC and also helped Communications Officer Sarah Tibbetts run an arrival control on the Somerset Stages. Training Executive Alan Page was on the rally as a radio marshal and has eight more events lined up in his capacity as a rescue crew member. Tim Swietochowski, Head of Communications, joined Tibbetts and former Development & Communications Assistant Mark Gold on the recent Severn Valley Stages, where they manned a passage control. Meanwhile Development Manager Suze Endean marshalled on a Chelmsford Motor Club 12 Car rally earlier in the year and was a Stage Commander on the Towncross Engineering South Downs Stages.

Technical Updates, clarifications and advice
STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF OLDER VEHICLES A number of older cars are currently competing in UK motorsport and competitors are reminded that it is essential to check that the structural integrity of any such vehicle has not been compromised by corrosion. Warning signs include bubbling paintwork and rust staining. The images show the aftermath of an incident in another country. It appears that rust in the A-pillar and sill of this vehicle may have severely compromised the ability of the structure to withstand the impact sustained from rolling. Fortunately both vehicle occupants escaped serious injury.
KARTING: 250 NATIONAL TYRES KARTING: 210 NATIONAL Those involved in the 250 National class are advised of the recently AIR FILTER issued MSA Kart Race Yearbook Amendment 8, concerning tyres permitted for short-circuit use. The latest CIK-homologated Le Cont and Vega tyres have been added, as it was noted that their designation has changed – unlike the Dunlop which is still ‘DFH’ and therefore requires no change in the regulation. The full amendment can be downloaded from www.msauk.org/karttech.
18
Those involved in the 210 National class are advised that there has been a recent update to permit an alternative K&N air filter – part no. RC 5136 – due to one of the existing parts no longer being available. This is effective immediately.

Updates & Clarifications
BRAIDED PIPES Competitors are reminded that there are number of regulations relating to fluid-filled pipes in the driver/passenger compartment, which state that that if the lines are non-metallic then they must be either internally or externally metal braided hydraulic pressure hose. This applies to coolant pipes (see (J)5.10.1), oil lines (see (J)5.12.1) and fuel lines (see (J)5.13.1). Alternatively the lines may be FIA compliant, the requirements for which are detailed in FIA Appendix J Article 253 Article 3.2. The image shows an example of suitable externally metal braided fuel lines routed through the cockpit (the blue line is a battery cable).
KARTING: HONDA GX160 ENGINE CUTOFF SWITCHES The MSA has previously highlighted concerns over the use of return springs on Honda GX160 ignition switches to ensure the switch remains in – or returns to – the ‘ON’ position if knocked accidentally. The issue is that when the engine needs to be turned off quickly, for example in an emergency situation, the switch needs to be held in the ‘OFF’ position. The MSA Technical Department has received a report from a recent meeting where a kart impacted the barrier and it was difficult for the marshals to switch the engine off – the switch needed to be held for a period of time against the force of the return spring. Competitors are reminded that such a configuration is not acceptable; the Honda GX160 Technical Regulations state: ‘The on/off switch must be fitted and be capable of stopping the engine. A shroud may be attached to the casing to protect the switch, if required.’ This does not make allowance for adding a return spring.

Academy Equipping the UK’s most promising young drivers
SCOTT MARTIN GIVES NOTES Last month MSA Academy co-drivers spent two days at Silverstone’s Porsche Human Performance Centre, undergoing fitness assessments and sessions on pacenote development. The young navigators were overseen by Academy Coach Nicky Grist and MSA Academy Manager Greg Symes, and joined by by current WRC co-driver Scott Martin. Martin, who co-drives for Abu Dhabi Citroen World Rally Team’s Craig Breen, was a member of the MSA Academy programme when it was known as Rally Elite. “I really enjoyed being involved and I found it interesting to meet the current young co-driving talent. It’s great to be able to give back to other co-drivers. It’s been 12 or 13 years since I first joined the MSA scheme, but it was a crucial part to the start of my career.”

Club Spotlight
SEVENOAKS AND DISTRICT MOTOR CLUB Sevenoaks and District Motor Club was founded in 1954 and has a large active membership, with members competing in most motorsport disciplines as well as volunteering at events across the country. SDMC members range from those involved in club motorsport to the likes of Vice President Vic Elford who has raced in F1, sports cars and won the Monte Carlo Rally.
Sevenoaks and District were instrumental in the resurrection of a two-day sprint at Crystal Palace Park. Supported by local Colin Shipway

clubs through competitors, volunteers and displays SDMC have seen an event popular with both spectators and competitors alike who travel to experience the unique atmosphere of an event at Crystal Palace. Club motorsport is at the heart of SDMC and their summer evening grass autotest series enabled competitors to use their standard cars. Held at Brands Hatch, the series has become so popular that events are now fully subscribed with reserves. SDMC were one of many clubs who previously ran events at North Weald Airfield. Recent noise challenges have cut down venue availability, but the club still managed to run a sprint at the venue in 2017. The club are always looking for other venues and opportunities, and worked with the team at MSV Brands Hatch where they ran their first AutoSOLO in 2016.
Colin Shipway
SDMC members enjoy an active social calendar and organise a wide variety of events, including sprints, AutoSOLOs and the Basil Elkington MSA British Championship Car Trial. The club also run a rally school within the winter months to enable newcomers to hone their skills in comfort before tackling scatters, 12 cars and other events in the local area.
In July this year, Sevenoaks are joining Borough 19, Maidstone & Mid Kent and Tunbridge Wells motor clubs to co-promote (and revive) a sprint at Lydden Circuit. With everything from scatters throughout winter to the summer autotest series, SDMC offer plenty of opportunities to compete and volunteer all year round. Working with other clubs to co-promote events, SDMC members can often be seen out and about supporting and enjoying motor sport.

Go Motorsport Club Development
EASTERN COUNTIES MOTOR CLUB Eastern Counties Motor Club (ECMC) was formed in the early 1950s and was the first club to hold a race meeting at Snetterton. For many years ECMC ran significant race meetings and longer distance events on the road and the ECMC trophy cabinet has many major names on the silverware. Jack Sears, Colin Chapman, Archie ScottBrown and the Morley Twins who drove works BMC cars amongst others were all club members and regularly the club had privateer members out on International Rallies. This is all celebrated, along with a lot of valuable historic information, in the ECMC Historic Reviews which are published by the club Historian now and are circulated world-wide.
Why is ECMC not a national force in Motor Sport now then?
Like a great many other clubs that were around forty years ago, it could be suggested the club lost its way. Fortunately, the club did have a specialism; Autotests. Eastern Counties MC ran a BTRDA round which took over the sea front at Felixstowe and ran tests in full public view. The Town Council even closed public roads and car parks for use as test sites. Autotesting then became a specialist discipline and, although the club ran a couple of Stage Rallies in the forests, membership began to dwindle. Until about five years ago ECMC ran a Trial, a Slalom and not much more. Entries were in double figures - just about. All local clubs were suffering the same problems of losing members, not attracting young blood and unable to afford better venues. The whole thing seemed to be spiralling downwards with no obvious way out.
www.msauk.org
ECMC had two neighbouring clubs with similar problems: West Suffolk MC and the Sporting Car Club of Norfolk. Anglia Motor Sport Club was formed by the three clubs and they organised a good season of AutoSOLOs. The quality events at a redundant MOD site attracted new blood into the sport and allowed the three clubs to swallow what few differences they had as clubs and, in doing so had developed a new branch of sport into something which was affordable to newcomers.
The following year the AutoSolo series expanded and another was created for Trials. By the end of the first full year the championships had well over 100 different names on each of the results sheets and in 2015 AMSC won third place in the MSA Club of the Year. As for Eastern Counties MC, what has it done for the club? The club has regained their confidence and direction; there is a future again.

GoMo Introducing...
New Yorkshire RDO, Heidi Woodcock
Although my family were more into motorbikes, we had a car repair garage, which I worked at for as long as I can remember. I always had my hands dirty, helping my Dad work on cars whenever I could. I followed Formula One avidly and quickly became interested in motorsport. While most girls my age were reading magazines like Jackie, I was a reader of Autosport. My bedroom walls had posters of Nigel Mansell’s Williams adorned everywhere and shelves full of model cars. I went Land Rover Trialling with some friends and every weekend was then spent out green-laning, trialling in quarries, or doing winch recoveries up to my knees in mud. In ’98 I got my first chance to compete on the Tour of Mull as a co-driver. It was incredibly scary and my first time on the notes in a converted Golf GTi road car. Straight into the first stage I knew this was what I wanted to do. We didn’t finish that year but I was hooked. I’ve done many other rallies in the UK, Isle of Man and Ireland. The most successful rally moment was winning the Astra Challenge in 2002. In 2006 I married my driver, Chris Woodcock. I’m secretary of our motor club and over the last few years I’ve taken on other roles as a licensed environmental scrutineer, trainee scrutineer and radio controller.
Bringing newcomers to the sport
GET INVOLVED Yorkshire RDO Heidi Woodcock offers her advice on bringing newcomers into motorsport. As a club where do you start?
You need to establish your target audience. A newcomer doesn’t usually have a lot of motor sport experience so however simple you make the experience it will be gladly received. Making the event fun for both the newcomer and the team involved will keep the buzz. If you are already holding an event look at the possibility of requesting a Taster Event permit which as a club you can apply for one per discipline per year (more information is available at https://www. msauk.org/Clubs/Taster-events) This allows people to have a go in a car as a competitor without having to join the club. The simplicity of offering a seated ride next to one of the competitors can give the real feel of speed with someone already experienced in the sport, and is an easy way to get talking to prospective newbies (as clubs, please ensure you apply for the permit appropriately – and ask if you’re not sure).

Why not fit a Go Pro camera to the dash to video the person? Having someone laughing and screaming is a crowd puller. If you send the video by email to them they will probably go on to share it on social media! This then gives you a contact because follow up is the key, offering a free ride is great whilst they are whizzing around a car park but a leaflet with your club contact details can be quickly lost or thrown away. Email the video, and offer an invitation to go along to the club meetings and meet the ‘gang’. Add them onto your clubs mailing list and buddy them up with people in the sport. If there is space at the event or at indoor static stands you could also try something as simple as a radio control car autotest with a few mini cones out and a mini route on a map. Everyone can have a go, including children who may not be not old enough to enjoy a passenger ride. This gives you an opportunity to chat to the spectators and people queueing to have a go, about ‘real sized events’ and their
interests and explain what they can do in a standard car. Again, take email addresses to follow up on – so often the follow up is as important or more important than the initial contact. Promote your club at all points with lots of banners, flags and then if filmed and shared on social media people can visit your club website and take a peek. Don’t forget that there is the MSA Motor Sport Development Fund available too, to help your club purchase equipment to promote your club, which when used can grow the membership. Simple things such as business cards with your clubs’ name, website address and social media details can also have a big impact. Don’t forget the Go Motorsport RDOs are here to help and the MSA website is full of ideas too, just look under Development. What’s your club planning this year? Go Motorsport MSA Motor Sport Development Funds The rebranded MSA Motor Sport Development Fund supports MSA-affiliated clubs and organisations with grant-aid to help grow motorsport and improve the quality of delivery and experiences for new and existing participants. Wales RDO Howard Davies reports on Brecon Motor Club’s use of the fund to purchase a shelter that club members use when volunteering on events. Earlier this year BMC made an application for grant funding towards a practical and high quality motorsport shelter, for use by the club’s marshalling teams who are out
volunteering on most weekends. The club was granted £300 towards the costs by the MSA fund and displays the new club logo alongside the MSA’s own.
The shelter can also be used by the club at promotional events and is wide enough to span the width of most rally stages. BMC used the shelter for the first time on Hereford Motor Club’s Mini Epynt Stages which took place earlier this month. Epynt’s notoriously changeable weather lived up to expectations giving the shelter a proper christening! Brecon Motor Club used the BMSTT’s fund a few years ago to add a tarmac road around a building on the Epynt Ranges. The road has added both variety and assisted in lowering average stage speeds on events. The cost of the civil engineering work was contributed to by most of the clubs that organise rallies on the ranges in addition to the MSA grant.
Introducing... I first became interested in motorsport back in the seventies when a colleague invited me to go and watch a road rally in North Wales. From spectating, we started marshalling and then competing on road rally events. I’ve also marshalled on the RAC Rally over several years. I’ve

New Eastern RDO, John Conboy acted as Development Officer for Chelmsford Motor Club, organising training nights for 12 car and Targa rallies and becoming an RDO seemed like the next step. I’ve been and still am involved with the recent development of stage rallying back to Essex, in particular events at Brands Hatch
after a 20-year absence. There is now a national winter series run by MSVR at all of their circuits. I’m still active on the club scene involved as a navigator on 12 car and 20/20 road rallies, Targa rallies and still clerking club events. Contact Andrew: southeast@gomotorsport.net

Introducing...
New South East RDO, Andrew Actman I’ve been involved in motorsport one way or another since my childhood. My father was a well-known ‘club’ rally co-driver and Autotest specialist so my youth was spent travelling to and from events. I competed as soon as I had my first car and took part in rallies, sprints and autotests, even winning my class in the BTRDA way back in 1977! I got further involved until my career took over and had a long break until the early 90s when I took up endurance rallying and circuit racing. I have taken part in most four-wheel disciplines and won the 2000 Classic Marathon and 2004 Healey Race Championship. I still compete at a reasonably high club level and have entered this year’s Brighton Speed Trials and the Crystal Palace Sprint. I also intend to take part in the Birkett 6 hour relay race. I’ve been lucky enough to travel around the world with motorsport and have so many wonderful memories. I see becoming an RDO as an opportunity for me to give something back and help develop our sport.
