Editor’s letter It’s never too early to get started in motor sport. I know friends whose formative memories are of attending events while working in the paddock to help their dad compete. Chris Williams, who writes our view from the competitor column in this edition, remembers assisting his dad with rally marshalling duties almost before he could talk. So it is good that there are now four dedicated circuit racing championships allowing drivers aged 14-17 to get their first taste of competitive racing after karts. Jack Benyon does a brilliant job of explaining the strengths of each series on pages 24-30, while Jack Phillips goes one step further and heads back to school to investigate one of the country’s most innovative courses. It teaches young drivers how to improve their racecraft while they also study for a qualification. You can read his report on page 32. Finally, regular readers will be used to us honouring the volunteers without whom no event would be possible, but in this magazine we shine the spotlight on arguably the most important of all: the volunteer medics who swap their NHS-issue medical gowns for MSA-issue overalls to ensure that, in the event of an accident, anyone who is injured receives the best possible care. Everyone, old and young, owes them their gratitude.

Alan Gow will step down as MSA Chairman after two years in the role
MSA BEGINS SEARCH FOR NEW CHAIRMAN Alan Gow’s successor will be appointed this year The process to identify the next MSA Chairman is underway, arising from confirmation that incumbent chairman Alan Gow will retire on 31 December 2017, having held the position since 1 January 2006. The MSA Board has appointed professional search firm Odgers Berndtson to identify the ideal candidate to chair UK motor sport’s

governing body from 2018 onwards. The association anticipates being able to announce the appointment of its next chairman later this year. The chairman’s key responsibilities include ensuring that the company acts in the best interests of the sport and co-ordinating its strategic governance and policies.
The latest insurance rebate made by the MSA to clubs
CLUBS GET SUBSTANTIAL REBATE The MSA has returned £342,000 to event-organising clubs, representing 18.6 per cent of their 2015/16 insurance fees paid. All event-organising clubs pay ‘per capita’ insurance fees in respect of competitors, which they then provide to the MSA to cover insurance management costs. Through risk management and by establishing a partial self-insurance scheme, the governing body aims to ensure a surplus over premiums and to make a rebate to the clubs concerned. Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive, said: “This is a ‘thank you’ to the clubs concerned in recognition of their commitment not only to providing first-class events, but also to keeping safety as the priority. The result is that we are able to maintain low premiums and to provide this rebate.”

FIA CHIEFS CROWN BRITISH CHAMPIONS
Todt and Stoker attend MSA Night of Champions ceremony FIA President Jean Todt and his Deputy President (Sport) Graham Stoker crowned the 2016 MSA British Champions during the MSA Night of Champions ceremony in London. MSA Chairman Alan Gow hosted
the winners of UK motor sport’s most prestigious titles for the annual awards evening at the Royal Automobile Club. They were joined by a series of special award winners, each recognised for outstanding
achievement. Steve Rider returned as Master of Ceremonies and was once again joined by colleague Louise Goodman. “We were delighted to honour the MSA British Champions – those who have excelled in their chosen discipline to win our premier UK titles,” said Gow. “Their achievements should be viewed in the context of one of the world’s strongest domestic scenes; it takes an unrivalled level of skill, determination and dedication to accomplish such a great triumph in the United Kingdom.”

GO MOTORSPORT OFFICER MADE DEVELOPMENT MANAGER
NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD
On 24 January the MSA Competitions & Clubs Department issued the 100,000th MSA Permit to Bridgend Automobile Club for its October Autotest. The MSA Permit, which the MSA began issuing in 2000, covers events under the governing body’s Master Policy of insurance and ensures that they are run in accordance with MSA Regulations to help guarantee safety and fair play. The MSA issues approximately 5,000 event permits per year.
Suze Endean has been appointed as the new MSA Development Manager, responsible for all elements of club development including managing the team of 10 Go Motorsport Regional Development Officers (RDOs). Endean previously worked as the Go Motorsport Regional Development Officer for London and the South East. “My initial priorities will be supporting clubs, our volunteers and encouraging new people,” she said.
The MSA is seeking nominations for the 2017 MSA Environmental Award, which recognises outstanding contributions towards environmental responsibility and the active promotion of sustainability within motor sport activities, events and communications. Previous winners include Anglesey Circuit, Greenpower, Williams Hybrid Power and The Rt Hon Lord Drayson. The deadline for entries is 20 October. For more go to msauk.org/awards

be extended for three years when the class is re-homologated in 2020. “I know it will give our champions an extra spring in their step at the end of the year,” said TKM boss Alan Turley. “We have worked with the Association of British Kart Clubs for many years and will of course continue to do so, but the offer to gain MSA status for our championships was too appealing to turn down.” The MSA TKM National Championships will continue to be run by Super One, with seven rounds across the UK starting in March.

More than 8,000 packs are being distributed across the UK and the process remains ongoing. “We recognised that we needed to do even more for our volunteer marshals, who are the power behind UK motor sport,” said Rob Jones, MSA Chief Executive. “All marshals registered with the MSA will receive a pack in due course if they haven’t already. That includes all future MSA-registered marshals, not just those already on our database.”

ighty-seven years ago, the government repealed the wonderfully named Locomotives on Highways Act and introduced the new Road Traffic Act of 1930. This was ground-breaking law and much of it is still recognisable today: defining what motor vehicles are, and how they should be built; introducing driver licensing and driving tests; creating offences of reckless and dangerous driving, and drink-driving. The 1930 Act also introduced for the first time compulsory third party motor insurance. This UK model for compensating victims of road traffic accidents would be adopted in the European Motor Insurance Directive of 1972. At the end of 2014, the European Court of Justice turned on its head this long-established practice that compulsory third party insurance only applies to vehicles on public roads. The court’s interpretation was well intentioned but has triggered the law of unintended consequences. Motor sport vehicles have never been required to have compulsory third party motor insurance during

New EU rules could threaten motor sport events such as the World Endurance Championship at Silverstone
competition, and insurers will not cover those risks. But the risks inherent in motor sport are intensely managed and controlled by venues and the clubs who organise events. The permits issued by the MSA bring public liability cover of £67 million, and personal accident cover for officials, volunteers and competitors at all levels. And there are easily obtainable insurance products to cover damage to vehicles and injuries but not third party risk. The Department for Transport is consulting on possible changes to the Road Traffic Act. Its consultation document describes the “routes to compensation” for victims of accidents. It is looking at all vehicles, not just at motor sport. But motor sport was never intended to fall within the scope of the Motor Insurance Directives. The routes to compensation in motor sport are well defined, well covered, and competitors are willing participants in the sport. The solution is simple. Our sport must be excluded from the Motor Insurance Directive. If it is not, there is a real risk that most regulated motor sport will disappear. Fortunately, this is also the DfT’s preferred outcome. Unfortunately, it relies heavily on influencing change in Brussels. By the time you read this we will have published to the sport our draft response to the DfT consultation. We will continue our efforts to raise awareness in Europe. We know that the FIA understands the issue, and look forward to the extra weight the FIA can bring. In the meantime, we need the motor sport community to take this up directly with your MEPs. here have the last 30 years gone? They’ve been great years for me in motor sport and in particular as a member of my local club, Magherafelt & District MC. However, my introduction to motor sport goes back even further than that to secondary school. Then I was friendly with the O’Kane family from the Hillhead area (in rallying circles Joe Pat O’Kane is known throughout Ireland). Myself and the O’Kanes used to go out and follow Joe Pat on night navigational rallies. Circumstances then changed – I went to university, got married in 1982 and went on to have three children. Then my husband (who was also interested in motor sport thankfully) was asked to navigate for a local driver and I thought, ‘no way are you going to have all the fun’, so in time we bought a Sunbeam and that was it. Over the next 20 years we competed in Ireland, the UK and in Europe doing the Peugeot Challenge (at the same time as Richard Burns). I also decided to compete in a few championships myself and Ruth McCracken became my regular navigator. My greatest achievements while driving were coming third in my class in the Irish Tarmac Championship and second in class in the National Championship.

After three more children, I turned my hand to helping the club more. I was secretary for six or seven years, but I branched out to timekeeping not only for MADMC but for all our local clubs. Soon I was out every other weekend timekeeping, and loved it. I was getting the buzz without the ‘costs’. In the following years I got asked to be deputy stage commander and then stage commander on local events, and then for the Ulster Rally and the Circuit of Ireland. I love working on the ground with the marshals, timekeepers, rescue, recovery and medics. As we say here, ‘the craic’ is mighty. You have to think on your feet out on the stages. Any calls that I make at the start of a stage are done with safety foremost in my mind. Safety for the competitors, the volunteers and the spectators. One of my most satisfying achievements from my time in MADMC is our production of ‘Spacers and Tappits’, our version of Strictly Come Dancing. It took eight weeks of practice but we pulled off a great show. All eight couples, backroom staff and compères were members of MADMC. The judges were invited from neighbouring clubs. It was fantastic and we raised £16,000 for charity. Last year I branched out and went to marshal the ’bikes at the North West 200. I found it extremely interesting; a very different form of motor sport. When I found out I had won the Volunteer of the Year Award (under the technical section) I had a little chuckle to myself. I am the least technical person in the world, but I understood how I might fall under this division with my timekeeping duties. It is a great honour to have been given this award, but more so that MADMC actually thought I was worthy enough to be nominated. Thank you Magherafelt & District Motor Club and thank you MSA. n

Co-driver argues it was right to cancel the Cambrian Rally
I
n February the Cambrian Rally was cancelled due to awful weather conditions. I have been co-driving for nine years and involved in rallying since I was a child, and with it being the opening event of the Ravenol BTRDA season it was disappointing. But having been at the stages when the call was made I can completely understand why it had to be called off due to heavy snow. Unfortunately not everyone shared that view and that’s a shame – and to say that the decision was unpopular is an understatement. But before we get to that I will provide a little bit of background. The Cambrian Rally is one of the oldest events of its kind – this year would have been its 62nd running – and it features some great stages through the forests of north Wales. This year new stages had been added and Fred Milne and I were looking forward to taking part in our Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX. We completed the first stage and despite the challenging conditions did pretty well, setting the 11th fastest time. But as we were preparing to head to the second stage we were stopped by the Competition Liaison Officer. She told us that on the higher altitude stages conditions

were worse and the marshals were struggling to reach their positions and, equally as important, so were the Rescue Units. Shortly afterwards, it was announced that the rally had been called off. To me and to fellow competitors that seemed entirely logical: if you can’t get marshals to the stages you can’t run a rally. We can’t run without marshals and we can’t run without a rescue crew. Unfortunately, many spectators didn’t see it that way. In the days and weeks since the event, social media has been buzzing with people condemning the decision. Many people, who from what I can gather were mainly spectators and some who hadn’t even been at the event, seemed to believe the decision had been taken because it was considered that the conditions were too slippery for the drivers. Wrong. They have asked whether we are mice or men. I’ve heard that some spectators even asked for the money back that they had donated to charity to park in event car parks. We were happy to compete no matter the conditions. But when we were told that marshals, radio and rescue crews couldn’t get into the stages due to the frozen solid gravel roads beneath a couple of centimetres of snow the organisers, in my mind, were left with no other decision but to cancel the event. The MSA has put a great deal of effort into making changes to ensure that our pastime can continue and I truly believe the sport is one fatality away from being gone all together. We must do what we can to protect our sport, before someone else takes the decision out of our hands. Cancelling the rally was the correct decision and anyone who says otherwise doesn’t have the best interests of the sport at heart. n

he world of junior racing is changing. Back in the day, budding young drivers would start off doing a bit of karting and, if they were lucky, would then step up into Formula Ford and F3 before the gilded few would make it to the big leagues. For those who didn’t make that final jump there were club racing championships. Today, the landscape is very different. Instead of club racing being a majority of drivers competing for fun, it’s become a tool for young drivers who want to progress in all types of motor sport – and that has led to a new breed of junior racing series aimed at the 14-17 age group. Perhaps the best known of the junior series is the Ginetta Junior Championship. Running since 2003, the series moved to the G40 car for the 2010 season when the championship received a permit to run as a junior formula in the UK. The championship has produced some of the UK’s best motor racing talent. Current British Touring Car Championship drivers Tom Ingram and Daniel Lloyd and McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winners Will Palmer and Lando Norris have all progressed through its ranks, as has Porsche Carrera Cup GB frontrunner Dino Zamparelli. Perhaps one of the most notable talents to come out of the series is MSA Team UK member Seb Morris, who went on to compete in GP3 and has just returned from a prize drive in the Daytona 24 Hours in a Cadillac prototype. The Marford driver reckons Ginettas were key to his development and to making himself known in the UK. “It was one of the best choices I’ve made in racing to be honest,” says Morris without hesitation. “I was karting from the age of eight to 13 and just got bored with the system, it got far too expensive. “The idea of being 14 years old and racing in front of 30,000-40,000 people on the big stage with the big boys was something I was very interested in compared to going to my local kart circuit where not as many people are there to watch. “It helped me get on the national stage at a young age, and at 15 I got some mega exposure and put my name in the limelight much earlier than if I’d stayed in karts.” And put his name out there he did. After a year of learning in 2010, Morris won the Winter Series before taking the Junior title in 2011 with 11 wins and 16 podiums. Running on the support bill for British Touring Cars, the championship allows juniors to learn how to compete in a rear-wheel-drive GT-style car. GTs are becoming more and more popular as strong grids of cars are backed by manufacturers, meaning if you want to make a living as
“The idea of being 14 and racing in front of 30,000-40,000 people was very interesting...” 26 24-30_MSA JuniorChamps_GR.indd 26
a driver, then GT racing is one of the best places to go. So experience in a GT car at a junior age can prove vital for a driver in the future, as it has for Morris. The G40s are capable of 120mph with their 1.8-litre engines and a season will cost under £100,000, which is less than what the main teams are charging for a year in top-level karting. The championship also has the benefit of a graduating series, the Ginetta GT4 Supercup, where drivers can continue their development in more advanced machinery. Ingram did just that, winning the Juniors in 2010 and the Supercup in 2011 and ’13.
Saloon Cars
Another well-established series open to drivers aged 14-17 is the Junior Saloon Car Championship. Started in 2014 after taking over from the 750 Motor Club’s SaxMax Championship, this series has become a hot-bed for young drivers looking to head into tin-tops, using almost standard Citroën Saxos with stringent regulations and cost-effective parts. For 2017, the series will again visit all the circuits included in the TOCA package without having to pay the premium of being a support race. ❱❱

There are 18 races run across nine weekends in a championship that is attracting ever-greater numbers year on year. In 2016, 25 drivers scored points in the series. And as a junior championship goes, it’s certainly one of the cheapest ways to go racing at under £25,000 a year if you run the car yourself. The atmosphere in the paddock is also exactly what you would want drivers of this age to experience. James Dorlin, who took the title in 2014, credits the series for teaching him many of the fundamental skills that have since seen him progress into the Renault UK Clio Cup. “That series taught me the basics of car control, weight transfer and race craft in cars,” says Dorlin. “It’s brought me to where I am now – that’s where I learned how to drive. The year I did it was the first year after it had been re-branded from SaxMax and all the cars were the same and were sealed. It meant close racing. There were a few of us who had raced the year before, but all the new guys weren’t a million miles away and some of them got onto the front row. It’s a good, close championship and everyone is driving the same car, which [puts greater emphasis on] the driver.”

The Fiesta Junior Championship offers a steeper learning curve in a quicker car
One of the easiest cars to get hold of in the UK is the Ford Fiesta and a series for its ultra-successful Mk6 ST model has proved worthy of a place on the junior ladder. The Fiesta Junior Championship, run by the British Racing and Sports Car Club, provides a similar appeal to the Junior Saloon Car Championship, although quicker cars provide a bit more of a ‘thrown in at the deep end’ approach. In 2016 there were seven different winners and 12 different podium finishers, proving that the series offers all-comers a chance of competing at the front. Like the Ginetta Jr to Ginetta GT4 Supercup link, the Fiesta Junior Championship offers a good chance of progression because the BRSCC also organises the Fiesta Championship, which the Mk6 cars can enter. So there’s plenty of choice. Jack Mitchell, who’s now established in GT racing, was a constant frontrunner when he competed in the series in 2012. He reckons the initial learning curve of competing in a front-wheel-drive car made it easier for him when he stepped up to Clios a few years later. “Because it’s front-wheel drive it taught me a lot initially having come out of karting,” he says. “We went a different route after that to Ginetta Juniors, but when I returned to front-wheel drive with the Clios in 2015 I was able to get back on it straight away instead of having a learning year. I was a bit more up to speed with it.” Although not a TOCA support series, juniors do get to drive many of the circuits used for the BTCC including Silverstone, Rockingham and Croft. Much like the Junior Saloon Car Championship, a season is going to cost you less than £25,000. The MSA has played its part in encouraging these series. In 2010, its Race Committee researched and then codified regulations for junior series. It was decided that four permits were enough and three were handed out initially. There wasn’t a fourth until 2016, when the latest addition to the calendar – the Renault Clio Junior championship applied for a permit. Cheryl Lynch, MSA Race, Speed & Kart Executive, says that the MSA did consider whether a fourth championship would dilute the market, but eventually came to the conclusion that the Renault-backed championship was worthy of a seat at the table. “Regulations state that the MSA may permit up to four junior race championships in the UK, so while three have been run in recent years, a fourth has always remained a possibility,” she explains. ❱❱
“Junior Saloon Cars taught me the basics of car control – that’s where I learned to drive” 29 03/03/2017 11:27

“When an application was received that would make this a reality, it was subject to detailed consideration by the MSA Race Committee,” she adds. “The committee did consider whether the market might be diluted but ultimately agreed to welcome this new manufacturerbacked championship. In line with the regulations there is a requirement for the car to meet stringent standards set down for junior race championships.”
Clio Juniors
The newly-formed Renault Clio Junior championship will start its first season this year and features the same cars used in the Renault UK Clio Cup. Ash Sutton, Josh Cook and Ant Whorton-Eales have all progressed into top BTCC entries from the UK Clio Cup in recent years, and now it has its own feeder series. Other than being restricted to 100mph and only five gears through the ECU, the cars are the same. JamSport team principal Jamie Going reckons the championship is the perfect step into the UK Clio Cup. “It’s a very good car, it’s got a sequential gearbox so drivers haven’t got to learn about an h-pattern,” says Going. “A lot of the drivers coming out of karting don’t drive every day, so with the Clio they don’t have to worry about a clutch and changing gear. It’s quicker for them to progress. “And obviously it’s a great stepping stone to the main Clio championship.” You can do a season in the category for under £50,000 with testing, the only drawback being that the championship is a relatively short one not starting until June and it doesn’t take in all the tracks that the big brother UK Clio Cup competes on. But there are still six circuits
30 24-30_MSA JuniorChamps_GR.indd 30
New for this year, the Renault Clio Junior series provides the perfect step up to UK Clio Cup racing
with 12 rounds in the offing. So whether it’s a specific leaning to a particular championship or a cost-effective transition from karts to cars, or even just to get familiar with car racing, there’s a junior championship out there for you. n

porting excellence runs deep in Loughborough. Consider the fact that no fewer than 32 athletes from the college competed at the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio last year winning 14 medals – six of them gold. If Loughborough College was a country, it would have been placed 17th in the Olympic medals table. In the Paralympics, it would have been inside the top 10. But it’s not just athletics where Loughborough College is training the next generation of champions. It is doing the same in motor sport. The three-year MSA Academy AASE programme based at Loughborough College is helping to develop the UK’s future racing stars. It gives young drivers the chance to hone skills that will help them succeed in one of the toughest sporting environments, as well as rub shoulders with inspirational sporting stars from different disciplines. “Before she graduated, multiple gold medallist Ellie Simmonds was a regular sight on campus,” says MSA Academy manager
32 32-35_MSA School_GR.indd 32
Loughborough College, a centre of sporting excellence, has opened its doors to young racing drivers
Greg Symes, who oversees the AASE course. “That’s pretty inspirational for the young drivers.” The course’s raison d’etre is to give the next generation the best possible footing not only in motor racing but as individuals. Visit any race circuit on any given weekday and there’s sure to be a junior driver learning his craft instead of his GCSE or A-level syllabus. And that puts a lot of pressure on young shoulders to make a living from driving, as there’s no safety net to save any fall from the ladder. The days of going from spannering in the pits to a racing career and back again are dim and distant. “It would be irresponsible if we told the drivers that they will all make it,” says Symes. “We don’t sugar-coat it. Chelsea Football Club, who we’ve worked with, has a target of one player per age group to make the first team. One player, from its worldwide academies. We don’t have a final place to put drivers, we can’t promote the drivers to anything, so the onus is fully on them to make the most of what we provide.” The drivers and co-drivers occupy the impressive and recently refurbished surroundings of Loughborough College for three days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) on two weeks each month. That leaves Monday to recover from the weekend’s racing and travelling, and Friday for pre-event testing and travel. There is time off in August, mirroring the Formula 1 calendar, while Porsche’s human performance team also visits every few months to pass on its specialist advice. ❱❱

“We want to make being a racing driver a career choice rather than a pipe dream” Loughborough’s Olympic-standard facilities are at the drivers’ disposal, including the ‘classroom gym’, so too the expertise of the many sports specialists across the campus. The college has such close ties to the university across the road that they share facilities and even a students’ union. For British GT-bound Will Tregurtha, who like many of the students shares a flat in Loughborough when he’s in town, the benefits of enrolling on the MSA Academy AASE programme were obvious. “It has given me the time to prepare for racing,” he explains. “When I was doing my GCSEs I had to take time off and it was impacting on both. Now, just coming in for three days in the middle two weeks of the month, it gives you more time. And you’re learning things that are relevant to what you want to do so you’re more motivated to do it.” “We’re away from home,” says junior tin-top racer Katie Milner, who is one of seven young women on the programme. “So we have to do everything ourselves and that makes you more independent and confident with better people skills.” It also puts the drivers among teenagers who have the same priorities and lifestyle. Filling the programme should be simple, given how many youngsters dream of being a professional racing driver. But that isn’t the case, says Symes. “They need to be 16 years old. And the pool soon shrinks when you remove drivers in education or similar schemes.” The drivers come from across the whole spectrum, too, not just the better known series. If a driver is serious enough and has a plan, they’re considered for the course regardless of experience. Rally driver and MSA coach Adam Gould believes that’s another benefit for the students. “There’s a really good mix of karters, GT and saloon racers, rally drivers, rallycross; it’s great for them to meet drivers from other disciplines. They can learn from each other and the contacts they establish now can be really strong links in the future.” Once chosen, the list of participants is given to the college’s Matt O’Dowd, himself an Olympian having competed in the marathon in Athens in 2004. “I look at the list of names and then check the qualifications are enough to gain a college place,” he says. “Numbers are increasing year on year since it moved here eight years ago.” O’Dowd and his elite sports team is in charge on Tuesday and Wednesday, teaching the various BTEC certificates you’d find on a standard sports science course with added motor vehicle studies. Thursday is for guest lectures, talks

32-35_MSA School_GR.indd 35
and workshops that are more geared towards racing and are managed by the MSA Academy. Combined, it results in three A-levels and enough UCAS points to go into further education if they choose to. “It’s done in single-year chunks,” explains O’Dowd. “Some cash them in and go to university midway through. When you factor in those that go on to a different career in motor sport, the progression is higher than we’d see in other programmes due to the diversity of progression available.” Chris McCarthy is one of those to have progressed. He now runs Karting Magazine and passes on his experience with a talk about communications. His workshop with level one students is startling – so few have the website, social media profiles and PR skills that are now vital. The aim isn’t to create PR robots though, says Symes. In a classroom upstairs, the year twos are working with 2010 RSF MSA Young Driver of the Year Jake Cook on how to improve their commercial presence, neatly showing how the course progresses. Second-year student Ben Green thinks returning graduates only help to improve the course. “They come in and tell us what worked and what didn’t, so you leapfrog the process and learn quicker from their experience,” he says. “It’s definitely helped me, it aids your learning and racing.” The package is impressive, but everything in motor sport is judged on results. With alumni including Chris Ingram, Matt Parry, Seb Morris, Tom Ingram and Jake Dennis, its success speaks for itself. “We want to make being a racing driver a legitimate career choice rather than a pipe dream,” says Symes. And leveraging Loughborough College and the MSA’s combined experience, the MSA Academy AASE programme is a firm starting base. n

he words ‘hero’ and ‘legend’ are arguably over-used in motor sport, and are usually reserved for those who achieve at the highest echelons. But while high-profile team owners and drivers dominate the limelight, there’s a vital cohort of highly experienced and qualified volunteers working in motor sport without whom it would not exist. Within the vast network of those who give up their free time to attend events around the UK are the medical teams made up of a variety of professionals. Motor sport can be dangerous, or at least has the potential to be: it says so on the back of tickets and at every venue. For that reason, the medics based trackside and in medical centres are crucial to ensuring that competitors and team members are well cared for should an accident occur. A common interest in motor sport and the desire to provide an invaluable service of care brings together a range of skilled specialists, who have to perform their duties in a range of roles both quickly and efficiently, much like those on track. ❱❱

Volunteer medics are present at every race meeting and are the first on the scene in the event of an accident
A paramedic by profession, John Eyre has been volunteering at Silverstone Circuit since 2012 and spends every weekend between April to November working at motor sport events. Eyre can usually be found trackside manning a RRV (Rapid Response Vehicle) together with a doctor. “I’ve always liked cars and motorbikes but followed them from a distance,” he explains. “I worked with the guy who used to run things at Silverstone and he invited me to get involved, so it took off from there. We’ll be sent to survey any incident that requires a

medical response. We’ll examine the driver and then deal with the situation as needed.” With a doctor at his side, Eyre is often the first at the scene of an accident when they occur. “If it’s not in your field of vision, you hear about an accident from monitoring the radio,” he says. “You start to ramp yourself up – you’re potentially going out on a live circuit. After we’ve had the call from race control we go. Sometimes it will be a red flag and an empty circuit, but if it’s serious we’ll join the competing cars on track. There’s always apprehension. Certainly for me as a paramedic, it doesn’t matter what call you go to, there’s always that adrenaline rush. It’s exciting sometimes, you’ve got to admit that. You don’t know what you’re going to walk into.” A key element of close-knit motor sport medical teams is working together in different environments, so roles are rotated between various locations, be that trackside or in the medical centre itself. “I’ve got an interest in pre-hospital care so this is quite a nice way of getting that experience, and I’m interested in motor sport – I’ve watched Formula 1 for a long time and I do some karting myself,” says James Price, whose day job is as an A&E doctor but who today is working in unison with the paramedics. “It’s a fast-paced environment and things change all the time. I like being first on the scene. You’re not there on your own – we’re always working as a team and the drivers are really appreciative of what we do; they know that we’re here for them.” ❱❱

Using Silverstone Circuit as an example, a 14 to 18-strong team is always present at club events, while on British Grand Prix weekend more than 100 medical volunteers are at work each day, excluding the crowd cover that is provided by voluntary organisations such as Red Cross. Heading up the medical team at each event is a CMO (Chief Medical Officer), who liaises with the team from the medical centre and is in place to coordinate the management of any incidents. That role extends to communicating with the clerk of the course and hospitals as required. “You work as part of a multi-professional team, which is similar to other areas of healthcare such as hospitals,” says Valpuri Luoma, who works as an anaesthetist in London during the week. “You assess and manage drivers or members of the public following an incident, but also marshals and team members. We can see anything from minor injuries to medical problems [such as asthma attacks or allergic reactions] as well as attending incidents on track should the need arise, but fortunately serious incidents are not common. I see this as a great opportunity to contribute to a sport I love by using my medical knowledge and skills to support the running of motor sport events. It’s a really fun, friendly and supportive environment to work in as part of a multidisciplinary team with a common goal.” There is a general consensus that in the workplace people need to be ferociously busy to be achieving anything, but in this instance a quiet day is generally a good one. “A good day is when we sit and do nothing, but a day where there are incidents can also be good because it proves the team works well together,” says Eyre. “Getting the best possible care for people is important and as long as we’ve done our best you get a good sense of satisfaction.” There are several similarities between those fighting for victories on circuits or special stages and the medical

professionals who are also involved, aside from the skill to perform each individual role. Mental strength is a significant attribute in both professions – the ability to deal with demanding situations under pressure – as is the requirement to work as a team. An anaesthetist by profession, Laura Carrick has been working in motor sport for almost a decade and agrees with Eyre that while it’s hard, dealing with the most difficult situations to the best of the team’s collective ability is rewarding. “There’s one accident that always sticks in my mind and the driver has survived, which is amazing,” she says. “He had a terrible crash and barrelrolled his car – it was a big accident. The situation brought the whole team [of rescue units, marshals, paramedics and doctors] together because he was stuck in the car and was in a lot of pain. You really saw how everyone worked together to get him out safely. I get very well trained at work, which is key to what I do on a day-to-day basis and in motor sport, but for some marshals it’s their hobby away from their profession, so when it all works together it’s a really rewarding experience.” ❱❱

Carrick says she gets a lot from the role on a number of levels. “At my wedding, all six of my bridesmaids I had met through motor sport. It just goes to show that I’ve gained a lot both professionally and personally – I’ve met some amazing friends who I wouldn’t know otherwise. I’d encourage anyone to have a go and see if they like it.” The medics who work in motor sport bring their professional expertise with them to help those who need it, but it’s also a two-way learning path. Eyre acknowledges that his experiences from working in motor sport have helped away from the race track. “The skills you learn are very transferable to working on the front line,” he says. “I’ve taken my trauma skills from motor sport into an RTC [Road Traffic Collision] often. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some of the best doctors in the country [and around the world with series like Formula E] and I’ve learned a lot that I can pass onto my front-line colleagues.” Like his co-workers, Price also values the two-way learning and says that if you have a passion for motor racing it’s a great way to be involved in the sport. “You definitely have to have an interest because there’s a lot of down time, but then you get the best seat in the house to watch the racing,” he says. “People think you have to be an A&E doctor to do it, but you don’t. I’ve worked with GPs, anaesthetists, orthopaedics and others – I think what’s most important is having the drive to do it. It’s really interesting to work with people from different areas of the profession and it’s very rewarding.” The invaluable network of volunteers who turn out every weekend to enable motor sport events to run around the UK should never be overlooked. Next time a high-profile driver bemoans the challenge of mixed weather conditions on track, spare a thought for those volunteering their time to stand beside it. n

F1’s travelling doctor
“It is the most rewarding of jobs” Tune in to any Grands Prix this year and among the new-look Ferraris and McLarens lined up at the start you will see a normal-looking road car at the back of the grid. This Mercedes C63 S will follow the pack as the lights go out and in it will be Dr Ian Roberts, the British doctor in charge of medical support at all the races. “I often joke that I always start at the back of the grid,” he says, “but it is quite a thrill to be so close to all the Formula 1 cars. We only follow them for one lap before peeling off into the pits, but it’s enough to get up some pretty serious speeds. At the tracks with longer straights like China we are travelling at 240kph [149mph].” The car – driven by a former F1 test driver – is loaded to the gunnels with the sort of medical equipment that would be needed in the event of an accident. “If there is an incident I am first on the scene and my job is to keep the driver alive and make sure that they get back to the medical centre,” says Roberts. “Those first few moments are crucial.” Roberts is one of the most important medics on the racing scene today. In addition to his hands-on work on race day, as the FIA’s deputy medical delegate to F1 he is responsible for ensuring the systems and personnel are in place at every circuit around the world to enable them to react to a medical emergency in the event of a high-speed crash. It means liaising with local medical teams from Melbourne to Baku: “I spend quite a lot of time abroad,” he says. “But it is the most rewarding of jobs.” Roberts, who is also chairman of the MSA Medical Advisory Panel, started his love affair with racing 20 years ago when he began visiting Silverstone as a spectator while working as a registrar specialising in anaesthetics. “I loved the sport but wanted to get involved so I approached the Chief Medical Officer [CMO] and volunteered my services,” he explains. “I started working trackside and then progressed to the medical car and eventually became Silverstone’s CMO. But I’ve done a lot of work in rallying as well.”
44 36-44_MSA Medics_GR.indd 44
He says that advances in technology and engineering – especially at the top of the sport – have meant that drivers are far better protected than they were even a few years ago. “We are seeing far fewer torso injuries thanks to better cockpit protection and incidents that would have been fatal 20 years ago are now survivable. Take Fernando Alonso’s crash last year in Australia – 10 years ago Fernando would not have survived.” Being first on the scene is not an easy task, but Roberts says it is also exciting. “It may sound cold but from a professional point of view you get the sort of experience most doctors would never have,” he says. “Even if you work in Accident and Emergency, the paramedics will already have treated the victim before they arrive to you. On the circuit you are doctor, surgeon and paramedic all at once. You also get a good idea of what led up to the accident and what injuries would have resulted from the impact because you can see the car in front of you. You can fit the picture together in a way that you never do at a hospital.” He says all medical disciplines are catered for, from A&E specialists to anaesthetists to GPs. Despite his high-profile role at the top of the sport, Roberts stresses that volunteer medics are the unsung heroes at all levels – all race meetings must have medics present at the circuit. “We mustn’t forget club racing in this country,” he says. “In the UK there is a race meeting pretty much every weekend of the year – from historic racing to saloons and hillclimbs – and a huge number of races that need medics. These races simply wouldn’t exist without the volunteer medics that attend them.” He is stoical about the realities of attending the incidents that occur – however rarely – at race tracks. “The bottom line is motor sport is dangerous,” he says. “The spectators know it and the drivers know it. There is no such thing as a risk-free race and occasionally that means there will be an injury or even a fatality. That is the reality. The key thing for me is to make sure that in the event of a crash we are fully prepared and that everyone on the scene does their best.” n

Dan Rooke
T
his year rallycross turns 50 years old. And inadvertently, to celebrate, the sport has been sent a young pretender to take rallycross by storm. Welcome Dan Rooke, the youngest ever winner of the MSA British Rallycross Championship. What the 19-year-old from Devon has achieved in his first year in a full-blooded Citroën DS 3 RX Supercar is nothing short of sensational. Two wins at Lydden were complemented by another on the series’ away trip to Belgium, providing a welcome level of consistency that saw him depose long-time series dominator and multiple champion Julian Godfrey. The age record had stood since 1989 when Michael Shield took the title at 23. Rooke almost didn’t compete in the series having looked at racing in Europe last year. But with the help of Pat Doran, Lydden Circuit owner and father of multiple RX winner Liam, Rooke was soon convinced. And Doran has put the youngster in prestigious company: he helped Andreas Bakkerud to score his break in World RX, and now he’s a works Ford driver spearheading the Hoonigan Racing squad. Doran believes that Rooke can follow a similar path. “We know he’s got the talent to do it,” says Doran. “People can see if you want to do it, if you can become a professional driver just like Andreas has done. The opportunities are there. Look at what Liam [Doran] has achieved. “Whether he [Rooke] has what it takes to get there is up to him. He’s got a bit to improve on but we’ll give him the opportunity – he’s got to get out there and really want it. He has the opportunity to be as big as Burt [Andreas Bakkerud], he just has to want it.”

“I’d wanted to try rallycross for years – we had a go and I fell in love with it”
Rallycross success has helped Rooke to focus on his future goals – namely to race in World RX
Motivation doesn’t seem to be a problem so far. After driving his own kart at the age of seven Rooke was soon karting locally before Autotesting in 2011. Two Autocross titles followed in 2012 and 2013, before a one-off outing in his Autotest car on a BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross event changed the course of his career completely. “It was the penultimate round of the BTRDA in a Citroën AX in November 2014 at Croft, the same car we used for Autocross,” explains Rooke. “We made a couple of tweaks to the car and it was ready to go. “It was a taster, I’d wanted to try rallycross for several years. We had a go and I fell in love with it. We came into the event not planning to do a season and we left debating whether to do the BTRDA Clubmans or the British Championship! It definitely changed our minds.” The choice was the MSA British SuperNational Rallycross Championship and – you’ll see a pattern trending here – Rooke won that, too. Fittingly, it came with two victories at Lydden Hill, just as was the case the following year in the top BRX class. Rooke’s growing success on the loose surfaces of rallycross is all the more surprising given that his roots are in rallying on asphalt. ❱❱

“My dad competed in rallying in the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship,” says Rooke. “I think his best result was third [in the championship] and he got pretty close to John Price [multiple series winner]. “I was 15 when we won the MSA British Autocross Championship. It was the first time I’d won a major championship, my first time competing in a car. You don’t get the closeness with Autocross as it’s more of a timing thing, but that’s where I found my speed in a car. I learned from that, I loved mixed surfaces even though my dad never got on with the loose.” There’s no doubt now that Rooke gets on with the loose. Although budget problems mean that he won’t be able to defend his title this year, he has already set his sights on a step up to World RX. If that is to happen he’ll need to be as prepared as possible: with nine-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb and German touring car champion Mattias Ekström just two of the big names switching to WRX, the sport is more competitive than it’s ever been. “My ultimate goal is be racing in the world championship, that’s where I see myself in a few years,” muses Rooke. “The whole sport is on a growth spurt at the moment and there are more and more professional drivers joining all the time. Hopefully in a few years time it will be matching even bigger championships. There should be a career path even if you aren’t driving, as there are options to work within teams.” Rooke will continue working with the MSA Academy in 2017 to bring his preparation closer to that of the world’s elite and picks out physical preparation as one aspect of his success behind the wheel. “Physical performance is a big factor of the academy, heading to Porsche Performance. It’s good to see where I’m at compared to other guys [from different disciplines

within the academy]. “Anti-doping is a big thing we’re focusing on at the minute as it’s really important in the sport, making sure we don’t take something illegal if we’ve been prescribed it, for example. You wouldn’t think about that every day. I find it very beneficial. “They’ve also talked about a pre-race routine and that’s important, the mental side of things. One of my coaches, Adam Gould, comes to the events and he’ll see me through it and help me out.” Rooke and the Citroën DS 3 were a formidable partnership in BRX in 2016, and the likes of Ollie O’Donovan, Kevin Procter and Godfrey will be cursing their chances this year with Rooke on the grid. After a sensational season last year, it will take a lot of doing to beat it. But if Rooke’s career progression up to now tells you anything, it’s that he loves a challenge. And he loves winning championships. n

tuart and Linda Cariss are not typical stage rally competitors. At 71 and 66 respectively, they are historic stage rallying’s pensioner couple and they’re still having a ball in their 1600cc Ford Escort Mk1. “I did a bit of road rallying before I met Linda,” says Stuart. “But I was an apprentice bricklayer and I had no money.” He duly joined the family building business and had no time for rallying either, so he got his competition fix in autotests. Having met on a blind date in 1970, they were key organisers on the York National Rally in period. “In 1979 I packed up altogether as I started to build a house. I did nothing until 1995 when I decided to go back to autotesting. I bought a Mk1 RS2000, which was the best car I’ve ever bought, and I still autotest it now.” A chance suggestion pointed them towards classic rallying and, competing as a couple for the first time, they did some events in 2002. “We enjoyed it and then marshalled on the first Lombard Enduro. We built our current stage rally car in 2005 for that event and did it four times. Then we read about Rally First and did that with the 1300 Escort.” Their first stage rally was the 2009 Somerset Stages when they rolled. Undeterred, Stuart rebuilt the car and they did Rally First with the BTRDA for two years. “Then we switched to historics and did the Roger Albert Clark Rally in 2010, the snowy year. It was an experience. “In the last six or seven years we’ve done things that years ago I would only have dreamt about. We’re now retired but I’ve built an extension to the house with a bigger workshop and I’m also building another Escort rally car.” In his limited free time, Stuart is treasurer of his local York Motor Club. “We were late starters,” he says of their rallying career. “But we never stop learning.” The Roger Albert Clark Rally is the main plan for this season and he hopes that will be in their fresh car – another 1600cc Mk1 in white. n

Anglesey Circuit
A gem of a track in the far corner of Wales
I
t’s one of the most remote motor sport venues in the British Isles, but the Trac Mon circuit on the Isle of Anglesey is a jewel in the crown of British motor racing – and a favourite among club racers. Based on the site of a former army training camp, Caernarvonshire and Anglesey Motor Club held its first MSA-permitted event – a stage rally – at the venue in 1989 before the site was adapted for circuit racing in the mid1990s. Between 2006-07 the venue underwent a substantial overhaul when the current circuit was built. Comprising four separate tracks (2.1-mile International, 1.55-mile Coastal, 1.2-mile National and 0.8-mile Club), with two able to be run at the same time, the full International layout provides the kind of undulating technical challenge that attracts toplevel GT teams for private testing and development sessions. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Ty Croes circuit won the highly-acclaimed MSA Environmental Award last year, designed to recognise outstanding achievement or contribution towards environmental responsibility and the active promotion of sustainability within motor sport. During the venue’s transformation into its current guise, the circuit quarried rock on-site and in the process saved an estimated 3,500 wagon journeys, while more technologically complex processes included laying the asphalt cold. The venue has also designated two Sites of Special Scientific Interest since the circuit was built. Perched on the South West coast of Anglesey with stunning vistas over the Irish Sea, the circuit has strived to minimise the disturbance to residents in the local rural

community, working closely with the local authority and acoustic consultants to manage noise. The project includes a noise monitoring system and a community liaison group to ensure all parties are happy. Along with being a race and test venue for clubman racers and professional teams, Anglesey Circuit welcomes manufacturers developing efficiency and reliability into their products and the introduction of alternative energies. The circuit’s infrastructure was boosted by the construction of a 22-garage pitlane complex in 2013, and it hosts a number of club circuit racing events each year including rounds of the BARC, 750 Motor Club and BRSCC championships. At the close of each season, the venue is host to the Race of Remembrance endurance event (featured in the Winter 2016 edition of MSA Magazine), where club competitors and injured servicemen come together to compete in a ninehour charity race. Four stage rallies will also be held at Anglesey Circuit in 2017, on top of sprints, drifting and motorbike racing. Before its overhaul, Anglesey Circuit was an annual calling point for the British Rallycross Championship and welcomed a high contingent of Irish competitors, thanks to its close proximity to the Holyhead ferry port route to Dublin. Spectators enjoy almost unrivalled views of the circuit from the highest position at the venue, elevated on the inside of School corner. Viewing is possible around the majority of the 2.1mile layout, on which the track record is 1m12.99secs, set by Scott Mansell in a Bennetton B199 in June 2014. The back straight also references Welsh motor sport heritage, being named in memory of Wales’ only Formula One driver, Tom Pryce, who lost his life in the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami in 1977. Nestled six miles off the A55 that crosses North Wales, the Anglesey Circuit is located far from the masses but its welcoming atmosphere, interesting configuration and stunning location is enjoyed by competitors and spectators alike. n

Better than the real thing Race simulator use is now well established as a vital part of any professional racing team or driver’s schedule; especially with motor sport becoming increasingly global and testing ever-more constrained. Base Performance Simulators, founded by factory Aston Martin Le Mans GT winner (and Formula 1 simulator expert) Darren Turner, work alongside World Championshipwinning race teams and drivers helping them learn circuits, fine-tune car set-ups and keep race-sharp without the need to send budgets into the stratosphere with costly trips to the tracks of the world. From their Banbury base (20 minutes from Silverstone), BPS blends cutting-edge simulator technology with expertise from a team brimming with experience from F1 and top-level sportscar and touring car racing and are the first such UK specialists to fit their pair of simulators (the BPS4.8+ motion single-seater and BPS GT) with the very latest Panthera software from market leader Cruden. With car set-up changes, weather alterations and even circuit modifications now available at the touch of a button (well, click of a mouse) and a full data analysis suite on-site, BPS now provide the most realistic on-track experience for a driver without actually pulling out of the garage. It’s not just modern racers who benefit from using the award-winning facilities either; a wide range of historic machinery is now available, as well as the circuits used for top-tier classic racing, such as Goodwood, Silverstone’s historic layout and the legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife. Best of all, you can save big money on your fuel, tyre and transport bills; body and mechanical damage simply aren’t factors, and you’re always warm and dry – even when simulating wet-weather track conditions. Corporate packages and private bookings are also available and if you don’t fancy popping up to the Banbury HQ, you can always order one to your own custom-built specification and installed in your home, with a full maintenance package provided. Cadwell Park NHMC 20 November 2016 C.9 lnguiry This matter comes before the Court at the instigation of the MSA as an Investigatory Hearing in accordance with MSA General Regulation C.9. The National Court panel was asked to investigate any irregularities in the results of the North Humberside Motor Club Cadwell Stages Rally at Cadwell Park held on 20th November 2016. The organiser had brought the matter to the attention of the MSA regarding a number of errors in the final results. Mr Simon Blunt made a full and comprehensive report to the National Court panel highlighting a number of issues regarding the running of this event under some very difficult and demanding circumstances by the competitors and officials alike. The National Court panel also
considered the written submissions of Larry Carter (Car 41 ), Tom Blackwood/Goran Winning (Car 40), John Savage (Car 50), Ian James (Clerk of the Course) and David James (Deputy Clerk of the Course). Upon investigation the National Court panel found that: (i) Car 14 (Mark Jasper) did not start stage 8 and did not report to Main Time Control 2 (MTC 2). Therefore should not be classified as a finisher. (ii) Car 40 (Tom Blackwood) had an accident on Stage 8 causing the stage to be stopped. The officials stopped the stage on the grounds of safety. The vehicle was removed and returned to the service park without reporting to MTC 2 therefore should not be classified as a finisher. As a result of the investigation the National Court orders that the organisers amend the results and re issue accordingly. STEVE STRINGWELL, CHAIRMAN

Larne Motor Club
The JLT MSA Club of the Year runner-up punches above its weight
I
n any other year, it might have been a runaway victory for Larne Motor Club in the JLT MSA Club of the Year awards. Yet a huge record entry meant that hairs were split and on this occasion the small-yet-prolific Northern Ireland club walked away with a thoroughly well-deserved silver trophy. Founded in 1954, Larne MC consists mainly of marshals and organisers. Like many others, the club is currently contending with an ageing membership, so in an attempt to attract younger members it has worked closely with its Go Motorsport Regional Development Officer, Jonathan MacDonald, to engage local students through Autotest demonstrations and passenger rides at local colleges. The club has also worked hard to cement itself within the local community by getting involved in the council’s ‘Larne Alive’ campaign. “There were hundreds of people lining the Larne Main Street and our wee club was front and centre for all to see,” explains Jonathan Millar, vice-chairman. “We had members walking alongside the cars, handing out leaflets and talking to people along the route. This was a successful day of

promoting motor sport to the local people, some of whom joined the club because of the parade.” Passion is evident at the club, which stepped in at the eleventh hour to help two recent events. First, the club answered a call for help the night before the first stage of the 2016 Circuit of Ireland Rally. Secondly, it worked hard to correct a redressed road in the run-up to the popular Cairncastle Hill Climb. Luckily the club is prepared for such occasions with its own rally timekeeping team, MSA Trainer and experienced scrutineers, one of whom became the first female chief scrutineer at last year’s Circuit of Ireland. In future Larne MC plans to build on its hard work, engaging with local schools and colleges, and holding an open day to raise awareness of its activities and introduce the public to club motor sport. Meanwhile the existing membership is gearing up for a well-earned trip away to the World RX round at Hockenheim. Says Millar: “We are always changing and adapting, although the one thing that never changes is the fact that we’re a close-knit group who are committed to running motor sport events to the highest standard.” n
