Buying Guide: FCC Paragon (AMV Worldwide)

Is it really you?

Driver licence checks and employee verification can be a lot easier with FCC Paragon’s Tango system TANGO VERIFICATION SYSTEM Making regular checks of drivers’ licences can cause irritation to both office staff and drivers. Details that are needed for the requirement of verification of staff/ drivers when they apply for a new position can also be a daunting task and ensuring a person is who they say they are and that their licence/passport

4

are correct, and match, can sometimes be difficult.

NO LONGER Tango, the driver licence/verification system from FCC Paragon, undertakes the task for operators and sends a notification if there have been any changes in driver details. A change of address, which has possibly gone unnotified, the addition of traffic points, along with any other changes to the licence information, are automatically notified to the correct traffic or HR department. For licence checks, this can be scheduled to suit company requirements, with checks from daily to once a year and on specific days of the month and for different employees. Drivers may be verified, if not in person, by using their mobile phones, and the system, if required, can also provide employers with more detailed personal information about the driver and all employees being considered for

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

employment with the company. The system can check: UK/NI licences (operators will receive driving licence validity, including full entitlements and/or any driving endorsements with full information); enhanced ID (includes HM Treasury sanctions list for terrorists); prove staff identification and that they are not involved in any recorded suspicious activity, money laundering or terrorist financing risk assessment. This check identifies persons on government sanctions lists and politically exposed people, checks against the death/ bereavement register and adheres to anti-money laundering regulations that companies may be required to conduct as part of their business; ID verification (the system uses a driver’s driving licence document to verify ID, along with their passport, using facial recognition to match the person on the camera to prove they are the person in the ID document). Using both automatic and manual processes to check the security features of each unique ID document to ensure it is genuine – and using an anti-spoofing liveness test – gives confidence that we have captured an image of a real person in front of a camera, not a spoof through an automated bot, a mask or a photo. For FCC Paragon, which has more than 25 years’ experience in tenant referencing for landlords, this is a new direction using its extensive experience gained from many UK customers.

Buying Guide: Avail

Avail has launched a mobile app to link operators with available drivers, saving money and time DRIVER RECRUITMENT PLATFORM Operators do not need educating about the driver shortage, but they do need help with it, and Avail has launched an online platform and mobile app to do exactly that. It puts operators directly in touch with a network of more than 17,000 temporary drivers and is designed to reduce costs and admin, including hours spent on management duties and payroll. Drivers receive offers of work on their smartphones via instant push notifications, for hourly rates set by

the user. The app targets drivers in specific locations and those with the skillsets for the task required, using targeted marketing. Jobs are advertised on multiple social media platforms, via Google searches and on more than 50 UK job boards. A fee of £7.50 per day, per active driver allows operators to offer more attractive hourly rates and is cheaper than traditional agencies. All users are charged the same amount and no driver will receive notifications about other work via the platform while they are engaged in an existing contract, which reduces the chances of them switching to

more profitable contracts at short notice. The company also operates a ‘one strike and you’re out’ policy, where unreliable or unfit drivers are permanently removed from the platform. Operators can also return to drivers with a good record and select their favourite workers for future jobs. The service is also fully compliant with IR35.

Welcome to the future of HGV Recruitment. AVAIL gives you the freedom to simplify your HGV driver recruitment all through the AVAIL platform, the modern alternative to the traditional agency. The platform gives you access to book all your temporary driver jobs in one place, and you decide the rate. All for a low set fee of £7.50 per active driver per day. Giving you access to over 15,000 HGV drivers all ready to work and IR35 compliant, all at the fingertips of the forward-thinking operator helping you be more flexible and maximise your profits by taking control of your driver supply.

Buying Guide: Brigade Electronics likely to occur. It has received positive feedback from drivers, who say they noticed a significant reduction in the risk of collision with both vulnerable road users and static objects. “Vehicle safety systems play an important role in saving lives and Brigade remains at the forefront of industry with the sole aim of keeping drivers, cyclists and pedestrians safe on our roads.” Sidescan®Predict constantly gathers object detection data, with additional technology embedded in the system to amass information such as speed, direction, acceleration and the turning rate of a vehicle.

ASSESSING RISK

Predictive warning Following changes to the Highway Code, Brigade has launched Sidescan®Predict to improve road safety SIDESCAN®PREDICT State-of-the-art technology, which uses artificial intelligence to detect the speed and distance of cyclists from a truck, could help to keep vulnerable road users safe, while protecting drivers from hefty fines that form part of a shake-up of the Highway Code. With tougher penalties coming into force to ensure greater protection for cyclists and pedestrians, Brigade Electronics is calling for more operators to adopt a new predictive collision detection system to safeguard against fatalities on UK roads. Sidescan®Predict is the next generation of side-detection sensor system that can intelligently discriminate potential collisions and warn drivers, leaving them sufficient time to intervene. Since Brigade Electronics launched Sidescan®Predict it has revolutionised the truck and van industry, with the

8

system helping to reduce the risk of fatalities by 84%. Brigade UK marketing manager Emily Hardy says: “With the DfT recently publishing a new ‘hierarchy of road users’, which gives more protection to cyclists and pedestrians, it is now more important than ever for operators to take action to help preserve lives and keep within the law.”

TRANCHE OF CHANGES The reformed Highway Code, which came into force on 29 January, includes a tranche of changes for motorists and passengers. Those who fail to abide by the new rules will face tougher £200 fines and six points on their licence. The change is part of a £338m package announced by the government to boost cycling and walking across the country, while ensuring that UK roads are safe for vulnerable users. Hardy adds: “Sidescan®Predict is a revolutionary system that uses ultrasonic technology to predict if a collision is

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

This information feeds an algorithm created by Brigade to assess the risk and calculate the likelihood of a collision with nearby cyclists and pedestrians. The system always remains switched on when the vehicle’s speed is below 22mph, regardless of the indicator selection, and it cannot be deactivated by the driver. It has been designed for most rigid body vehicles, including rigid box vehicles, tippers, mixers, coaches and buses with a minimum length of 5.2m. The system comprises six sensors, which have a detection area of 2.5m, compared with the industry standards of 1m to 1.5m.

SOFTWARE SOLUTIONS

System upgrades

Descartes’ Blueleaf service improves efficiency, safety and sustainability of deliveries to care homes LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN SOFTWARE “The pandemic has put immense pressure on the health and social care sector, and we wanted to improve our internal operations to help care homes navigate the complexities and continue to deliver outstanding care,” says Rob Meredith, group head of operations at Blueleaf. “The integrated route planning and ePOD solution allowed us to eliminate inefficient and ecologically unfriendly paper-based processes, provide customers with a Covid-safe ePOD option, and improve delivery documentation accuracy. Descartes also helps to improve safety across the fleet, ensure compliance and minimise driver risk,” Meredith says. Blueleaf’s fleet delivers a range of products to care homes across the UK and Ireland, including bedding, furniture, cleaning products, personal protective equipment (PPE), incontinence care and specialist equipment. In the wake of

10

the pandemic, as the care home sector became a high-risk environment for the daily distribution of essential products, Blueleaf adapted its delivery practices to ensure they were Covid-safe. The Descartes solution allowed Blueleaf to streamline its delivery process, ensure compliance with daily walk-around vehicle safety checks, and facilitate more environmentally friendly delivery practices.

Buying Guide: FuelTek

Capturing the data Drivers no longer have to manually record fill-up data with FuelTek’s cable-free Datanozzle reader DATANOZZLE

Removing opportunities for human error is the holy grail for data collection, which is exactly what FuelTek’s Datanozzle is designed to do. Available on any of the fuel management specialist’s FT4000 Fuel Access Control Terminals, it is a cable-free proximity reader that removes the need for the driver to manually record information about fill-ups, which they are required to do with traditional key, tag, card and keypad methods. The device takes the form of a boot mounted on the nozzle – so it looks no

different to a conventional set-up. It is manufactured from high-impact nylon, is easy to install and links to a proximity tag attached to the fuel tank. It automatically generates a reading when the nozzle is inserted into a tank, gathering all of the vehicle’s details. The

system is able to identify authorised vehicles, their operating parameters, and it can link with on-board management systems or trackers to extract odometer readings. The Datanozzle cuts out driver intervention and seamlessly captures information. It is guaranteed to a minimum of 100,000 read and write cycles and the company retains data for at least 10 years, which it collects via a high-security authentication and cryptographic algorithm. Data can also be fed into the company’s Tankwatch online fuel management system to produce vehicle usage reports, which can be accessed from any internet-enabled device (desktop computer, tablet or smartphone), while reports can be automated so they can be delivered at any time, 24 hours a day at a pre-determined time.

IMS has combined proven products to offer efficient and profitable axle components for operators TRAILER AXLES The SAF Holland S9-4218 Intradrum combines proven components into a successful system. Efficient and profitable, it guarantees planning reliability from the first km. Along with the SAF Intra suspension, the design incorporates the functional suspension arms and axle beam into one unitised and maintenance-free component. This indestructible design provides additional benefits, such as the lack of additional mounting parts, including axle seats and U-bolts. The

specially mounted shock absorber is positioned in the centre of the hanger bracket and within the functional suspension arm, protecting it from stone chips and road debris, while the integrated 3D bushing provides optimum ride performance. The Intradrum axle’s brake shoes are mounted around a spherical head, which allows the brake shoes to move in all directions and evenly distribute force across the linings for a longer service life, while maintenance is quick and easy. The heavy-duty Intradrum hub

units come with pre-adjusted and maintenance-free compact bearings, which can be replaced simply by removing the hub seals at either end of the bearings, then removing the retaining clip in the middle of the two tapper roller bearings. Complete replacement kits are also available. The SAF Intradrum is available for on- and off-road applications, giving the trailer builder and operator extensive choice. Operators also have peace of mind with SAF’s class-leading guarantee: six years/unlimited mileage on all SAF Intradrum products.

Words: Josh Pilgrim, partner account manager, Europe, Geotab

TELEMATICS AND TRACKING MANAGEMENT Bureaucratic hurdles have always obstructed compliance management while operating on the road network. Now adding another roll of red tape, Brexit has introduced a new set of challenges for fleet managers. While much more suitable than a no-deal position, the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (the TCA) with the European Union (EU) provides a duty to ensure compliance to commercial operators when travelling from the UK. The TCA comes into effect in May this year, applying to vans and trailers travelling into Europe.

CROSS THE BORDER It does not affect ‘Channel Dash’ shoppers loading up with alcohol for their personal use. But it will spoil the fun for commercial operators that regularly cross the border to trade with Europe. They will now need to employ

14

a transport manager and get a goods vehicle O-licence to operate effectively. Any vans operating over 2,500kg and up to 3,500kg will fall under this remit. This also applies to cars towing a trailer in the same weight restrictions. So if you drive them for hire or reward into Europe, you will likely fall under this new regulation. You can also be asked to demonstrate all of your routes at any time to ensure your company is complying with the rules. That’s just more paperwork, right? The commercial operator’s worst nightmare. It doesn’t have to be. A simple telematics system can eradicate the headache of complicated route monitoring and

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

Telematics does not just provide a historical journey log: it can also be used to plan routes, optimising journey times to ensure operators get the best value from their time on the road. The system can monitor driver behaviour to ensure you are getting the best performance from the people behind the wheel. And it can tell you when your vehicle is not performing effectively and needs maintenance before it breaks down. Ultimately, when officials come knocking on your door asking to see the information that verifies you are compliant with the terms of the TCA, you have it all there, at your fingertips. You can forget about filing cabinets stuffed with paperwork and officialdom. The Geotab interface will display it all for you and enable you to do what you do best – and keep on motoring.

Buying Guide: G-Lok Systems wiring is not a consideration, and it is designed to withstand tough weather and washing conditions. GLOKE transmits its location every 10 minutes and transport managers can keep tabs on the location of trailers via G-Lok’s online portal, access to which is included in the purchase and includes features such as geofencing, movement history, device and battery health and customisable reports. By contrast, some trailer trackers only provide updates once a day, and operators may be charged a fee for additional location requests.

PRICE COMPARISONS

Track and trace

G-Lok’s trailer tracking system GLOKE provides a low-cost, low-maintenance option for operators GLOKE TRAILER TRACKERS Vehicle telematics get all the headlines, but technology to keep tabs on trailers is much more low key. It is a simpler affair and does not require the levels of sophistication or data offered by modern vehicles. But a lot of trailer tracking systems provide little in the way of detail, and those that do better can be expensive and labour-intensive to fit and maintain. G-Lok Systems is attempting to change that with its GLOKE trailer tracker, which is designed to be low-cost, low-maintenance and to keep operators regularly updated on the whereabouts of their trailers. It does not need a wired connection because it is powered by batteries and solar panels, both of which can power the device on their own or simultaneously via an independent charging module. This is significantly different from

16

conventional trailer tracking units, which typically require a wired connection to sustain their batteries and operate power-hungry GPS systems.

EASY ON THE POWER By contrast, GLOKE uses a Sigfox (LPWAN) internet-of-things system instead of a SIM. It performs a similar function to a GPS but requires much less power, to the point where it can run indefinitely – and it does not need to be professionally fitted. Along with the lack of wiring, the physical attachments are limited to four screws, so there is no need to book a specialist to fix it to the trailer. Exactly where it is attached to the trailer is also less problematic than with traditional equivalents; again,

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

GLOKE can also be used to track assets such as plant and machinery, although it is primarily aimed at small- to mediumsized transport operators that may lack trailer tracking facilities or have previously been relegated to ineffectual systems because of cost constraints. G-Lok starts at £50 per unit, there are no fitting costs and subscriptions are less than £2 per unit, per week. This renders it substantially cheaper than conventional trailer trackers, which typically start with a three-figure up-front cost per unit and subscription prices can often be double those of G-Lok’s. The systems have proved their worth with real-world hauliers. Fakenhambased operator Jack Richards trialled GLOKE with 100 of its trailers in the first quarter of 2019 and immediately fitted the units to its 987 trailers in the second quarter of that year.

It has two different sources of power; batteries and solar panels. These sources ensure uninterrupted operation of the device and the possibility of using it on objects without a power supply. It’s high resistance and waterproof (IP67) box ensures that GLOKE’s functionality is not affected by the weather and even extreme conditions such as a car wash/ storms. Our product can operate in high and low temperatures, this enables the device to be mounted on a wide range of assets.

GLOKE is part of our asset tracking solution, any information generated by our product is sent and stored securely in the cloud. Our customer portal gives you the ability to: • view your assets position in real time • check movement history • set up multiple geo-fencing areas for devices • receive notification when assets enter or exit geo-fence areas • view the current status of internal batteries and the overall health of the device

Buying Guide: MV Commercial

MV Commercial reports growing UK market demand for tippers and grabs and grabs has not only been in the new hire and rent-to-buy sectors, but also in the used market, where enquiries continue to increase. MV Commercial sales director David Patrick says: “In addition to having nearly 1,700 vehicles in our readyto-work hire fleet we are constantly defleeting high-spec, well-maintained, single-owner tipper and grab units into our sales fleet. These late-registration units are in high demand thanks to their low mileage and are often available with the remainder of the manufacturer’s warranty.”

With demand for grab and tipper units on the increase, MV Commercial is ramping up production VEHICLE AND EQUIPMENT HIRE Demand for tipper and grab units is showing a 30% increase compared with the same time last year, according to MV Commercial MD Steven Cairns (right). “We have nearly 200 units on order and if more chassis become available then I can see that number continuing to increase. Demand in the market is nationwide and we are looking to ramp up production with support from our sister company Fruehauf, in Grantham, in addition to the bodies we have on order with Thompsons,” says Cairns.

CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS The increase in the MV Commercial build is to cater to the demand from across the company’s UK-wide depots, fuelled by national construction projects such as HS2. In addition, there is increased focus on infrastructure

20

and construction, including significant demand from companies seeking to cater for the boom in home improvements. “We have seen strong demand for our DAF tippers with Fruehauf bodies since their introduction to the market earlier this year. Most of this scheduled build run is already taken, while in the tipper grab sector, we are seeing demand increase for the Thompsons Loadmaster tipping body paired with the Palfinger Epsilon M125L crane across Volvo, Scania, and DAF chassis. This combination continues to be the market leader when it comes to tipper grab units and we are proud to have supplied several hundred of them over the past few years,” adds Cairns. The increasing demand for tippers

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

As well as tipper and grab units and its traditional range of heavy vehicles, MV Commercial has broadened its reach to vans. Its dedicated LCV site in Livingstone, Scotland, has a constantly changing stock of between 30 and 50 vehicles at any one time – typically comprising high-spec, car-derived vans, short-, medium- and long-wheelbase conventional LCVs and a series of fridges, Lutons, and welfare units – all of which are available on short-, medium- and long-term hire. The company also offers LCVs on contract hire agreements and used vehicles between one and two years old for sale. MV Commercial can also arrange finance for such options via its in-house MV Asset Finance arm, and it prides itself on a flexible approach to vehicle supply, with tailored packages to suit every type of operator.

Tanking good option Keep your tanks up to date with Padoan’s efficient range of behind-cab, rear- and side-mounted options TANKS The vehicle industry is changing, especially regarding engines and alternative powertrain technologies. Hydraulic applications also have specific needs (cranes, refuse vehicles, hook loaders, skip loaders, vacuum cleaners, sweepers and more) and the space for components is becoming limited. Padoan is committed to providing efficient solutions with tanks that can be positioned behind the cab, such as the 63/27 (270mm depth and 110- to 200-litre capacity) and the new 70/70R (230mm

depth, available in two configurations: one or two tanks, 90- or 180-litre capacities). These solutions meet the needs of vehicles with limited chassis space for a hydraulic tank. The complete standard range

Buying Guide: Padoan includes nine families and 78 possible solutions, with rear- and side-mounted configurations. They start with a 30-litre capacity (26/36 and 36/26 families) and reach 400 litres with the T20 family. The T20’s design creates a 20-degree surface for easy installation and maintenance, which is useful when space is tight on the chassis side. Padoan also has a catalogue covering a range of diesel and combined tanks to serve any commercial/industrial vehicle. Industrialised production guarantees seamless high quality and outstanding cleanliness in each tank thanks to the serial moulding of the side walls and body, robotised welding and vacuum leak testing, among other processes. Padoan’s experience, built up over more than 85 years, allows it to find the best solutions for emerging technical needs. Its solutions are available in the UK and Ireland thanks to its distribution network.

Buying Guide: Premier Pits

Top pits on parade

There’s more to Premier than prefabricated pits; it also offers a range of time- and space-saving kits UNDER-CHASSIS WASH RANGE

The second is a half washdown pit and half ramp combo, designed for garages with width and height restraints and/or challenging ground conditions. It takes up approximately 19.5m of space and comprises a pit, flanked by two ramps. The pit is deliberately shallower than the aforementioned washdown pit option and is ideal for premises located on loose surfaces such as gravel or sand.

GO LARGE

Premier Pits is known for its range of specialist prefabricated workshop pits, which it has supplied to the commercial vehicle and PSV sectors for more than 40 years. The company also offers a suite of under-chassis washdown pits and ramps, designed for yard installations and cleaning vehicles from top to undercarriage in preparation for MoTs. The first is a galvanised washdown pit, the company’s most compact solution and ideal for operators with limited

outdoor space. It comprises a large, built-in settlement tank with a weir and a flow forge floor, which allows vehicles to be simultaneously washed from above and below, saving time and space.

The third and final option is the galvanised full ramp, which is the company’s largest such system at 28.2m. It is a fully structural calculated ramp, that can handle up to 8 tonnes per axle, with a safe working load of 40 tonnes. It includes a safe landing platform for drivers to exit the vehicle. All the above products are CE certified.

Buying Guide: RAM Tracking route into reliable full-time vehicle monitoring, but also from professional fitting and a camera that is set up with optimum standards from the beginning. First Notification of Loss, known to insurers as FNOL, is critical when it comes to processing claims – put simply, it is a case of the quicker, the better, and RAM Tracking’s 4G dashcams allow footage from an incident to be downloaded remotely to a computer or a mobile device without visiting the vehicle.

Your duty of care

RAM Tracking’s monitoring systems help operators meet increased responsibility to road users DASHCAMS AND VEHICLE MONITORING SOFTWARE The DVLA introduced an extensive series of changes to the Highway Code in January, many of which were designed to better protect vulnerable road users. One of the most significant overhauls was the new ‘hierarchy of road users’, which places an increasing level of responsibility and duty of care on HGV operators. The clause requires operators to be more aware of pedestrians, cyclists and other road users and adapt their on-road behaviour accordingly.

dashcams give drivers and operators exactly that. The company offers the choice of a hard-wired SD card-based dashcam, which automatically activates when the vehicle’s ignition is switched on, or its new 4G-connected version, providing instant alerts and remote access to footage.

AFFORDABLE STARTING POINT The SD card models represent an affordable starting point for operators keen to capture any incidents in full HD. RAM Tracking supplies and installs its dashcams so operators benefit not only from a low-cost

IN THE SPOTLIGHT Commercial vehicle drivers and operators are clearly in the spotlight and the changes to the Highway Code could potentially increase the regularity of claims against them. It is therefore more important than ever that operators have solid, dependable evidence to back up any incident that may occur on the road. RAM Tracking’s commercial

CRITICAL EVIDENCE The company’s industry-leading vehicle tracking and fleet management solutions are designed for businesses and help customers to gather critical evidence as early as possible, as well as giving fleet managers the ability to see and track the

whereabouts of their vehicles in near real time. Customers using this service receive instant alerts regarding any incidents, such as impact events, and they can be sent detailed accident reports from drivers at the scene, including images and audio recordings, which can instantly be relayed to insurers, further accelerating the FNOL process. RAM Live has an ultra-wide 150-degree viewing angle and footage is supplied in full HD. The system can also be used to monitor driver behaviour and tackle unwanted habits such as hard acceleration and speeding. This, in turn, can help fleets to cut bills, reduce private mileage and boost productivity. The connected dashcams also have two cameras – one forward and one in cab – so they can supply synced footage of the driver’s behaviour at the time of an incident.

See what your driver sees... RAM Tracking is proud to offer 'RAM Live', one of the first 4G on-demand dash cams especially designed for businesses. Our on-demnd dash cam allows businesses to have increased confidence knowing that they can notify their insurance companies of First Notification of Loss (FNOL) as early as possible with quality evidence, as well as giving fleet managers the ability to see and track the whereabouts of their vehicles in near real-time.

Buying Guide: Totalkare workshops with its ability to link to MoT testing systems. Grist Environmental’s Paul Forth says: “We were impressed with the level of detail and expertise shown by Totalkare and its products. We were driven in wanting to reduce excessive external charges from third-party brake testing by keeping the service in-house and reducing downtime.”

NATURAL ALTERNATIVE

Up, up and away!

Operators are seeing the benefits of installing heavy-duty testing equipment provided by Totalkare WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT Totalkare is enjoying one of its busiest-ever periods as demand for its lifting and testing equipment reaches record levels. Within the past six months, the company has supplied a wealth of heavy-duty products to operators and testers the length and breadth of the UK, such as automotive repair expert Cartland Commercials, which acquired two sets of Totalkare T8DC cable-free mobile column lifts. The T8DC can be synchronised in sets of four, six or eight – ideal for lifting an array of vehicles and sizes. Each column also has a safe working load of 7.5 tonnes and features adjustable forks to suit a range of wheel diameters. Cartland director Steve Cropp says: “Cables running around the workspace and heavy-handed mechanics don’t mix well, so I’m looking forward to seeing the

28

mobile column lifts improve the safety of our workshops.” Alan Firmin, the Kent-based operator, kitted out its workshop with a 7,000 in-ground brake tester from Totalkare, capable of a high daily throughput of fully laden light and heavy vehicles with an axle load up to 18 tonnes. Head of fleet and compliance Stuart Joyce says: “Due to the consistent growth of our business, it was a no-brainer to save any additional time and costs and to bring brake testing in-house. We were very impressed with the installation of the brake tester in our workshop, which is helping us to test vehicles regularly throughout the day.” Waste management firm Grist Environmental installed Totalkare’s mobile brake tester and a headlamp tester at its Wiltshire workshop. The former can accommodate up to 20 tonnes per axle and wheelbases up to 4,000mm, while the latter futureproofs

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

Last but not least, Volvo’s main distributor for the north-west, Thomas Hardie Commercials, upgraded the lifting facilities at its Trafford Park and Preston sites with a galvanised Y-MECH vehicle lift – the latest addition to Totalkare’s range with weight capacities from 25 tonnes to 35 tonnes and platform lengths ranging from 6m to 13m. Head of procurement Chris Schofield says: “We have moved on from using outside pits and the Y-MECH product was a natural alternative. Throughout our two-decade relationship, Totalkare has shown that it is capable of delivering the high level of service we demand in our workshops, and these products extend this to the outside environment.” All of Totalkare’s heavy-duty workshop equipment is supported by the specialist’s comprehensive aftersales service, with UK-wide field engineer coverage to ensure busy workshops get the assistance they need.

Buying Guide: Tructyre at the correct pressure? The tyre, and therefore the entire vehicle, will only operate safely when the load is properly supported on correctly inflated tyres; l are there any cuts or splits, cracks or bulges? l is there dangerously asymmetric wear? l are there any other warning signs that something is not quite right? But these issues do not have to result in the end of the tyre’s life. With Mastercare+, Tructyre’s proactive tyre service programme, Tructyre establishes precisely the right time to deploy life-extending and safety-enhancing tyre services. Mastercare+ Pro-active Maintenance is the first step in de-risking a fleet and reducing total cost of tyre ownership.

HOW IT WORKS

De-risk your fleet Tructyre’s proactive tyre management service protects fleets from downtime and poor tyre life FLEET TYRE MANAGEMENT Tructyre is the complete tyre management specialist for trucks, trailers, buses and coaches, offering tyre maintenance packages, commercial tyre supply, and emergency response to tyre failures. With more than 180 stocking points and 300 mobile technicians, Tructyre has the resource and presence to de-risk any fleet, throughout the UK. As a singleowned operation, Tructyre has complete control over every aspect of every job, from first call through to service delivery. Being proactive is at the heart of Tructyre’s tyre management system. Commercial director Richard Martin says: “A regular, professional tyre survey is an exercise in protecting the fleet from risk. It will inform the correct course of action to be taken in the interests of the

operator’s tyre policy, uptime, budget, compliance, and safety. “A tyre inspection can uncover many small, seemingly inconsequential defects that, if left unchecked, can have big economic or safety consequences. Frequent inspections protect the fleet from downtime and poor tyre life, can lower vehicle emissions and reduce the chance of mission failure. Inspections establish, among other things: l is there sufficient tread on the tyre to safely operate the vehicle in all weather conditions? l is it the right time to remove, retread or regroove? l are the tyres running

l You choose a package and operating system that suits your business; l Tructyre inspects the fleet with its technicians at a frequency of your choice; l Tructyre fixes issues that need to be addressed at the point of discovery for maximum uptime; l you save; well-maintained tyres provide lowest total cost of tyre ownership and low chance of mission failure. Whether the fleet is operating trucks and trailers or buses and coaches, the core risks are similar and well established – safety and economic. The question is, has your operation done all it can to de-risk the fleet? l For more information, go to tructyre.co.uk; 0330 107 0007

Buying Guide: TruTac

Compliance for all Ensure your fleet is compliant with legislation changes and protected with TruTac’s online portal

TACHO AND FLEET MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE This year, TruTac is more committed than ever to delivering an all-in-one compliance solution for fleet operators. Whether you operate an HGV, LCV or multi-vehicle fleet, TruTac provides a simple online portal to manage compliance requirements. Driving licences, classifications and insurances can be checked via TruLicence, and daily roadworthiness inspections of all vehicle types – including trailers – can be done via TruChecks, with unlimited templates and configuration options to suit any vehicle. TruTac’s most recent product, TruFleet, has been designed for every vehicle and asset type, to manage, plan and report on maintenance and other requirements such as inspections, insurance and document management. In an exclusive announcement with Commercial Motor, TruTac recently launched TruVan specifically for van and

courier fleets. It provides a one-stop shop for managing compliance and providing APIs, to tracking and telematics. From 21 May, companies using vans or other light goods vehicles weighing between 2,500kg and 3,500kg for hire and reward will require a goods vehicle O-licence to drive in the European Union. This includes crossing from Northern Ireland into the Republic. The move is part of the UK/EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement and will affect an estimated 21,000 vehicles and 4,200 LCV operators.

BE PREPARED TruTac believes operators should be prepared, whatever their vehicle fleet and status. TruTac MD Jemma James says: “This legislation comes at a particularly testing time for operators – regardless of the size or weight of vehicles – and it’s the type of thing that could easily be misunderstood or missed completely. “Those with vehicles under 3,500kg will be used to a fairly straightforward

approach to driver and vehicle compliance, but these new rules introduce an extra layer of complexity, especially for anyone with vans just over the 2,500kg mark or towing trailers or semi-trailers. We want to help operators prepare for it, to ensure they are fully compliant and that their businesses are unimpeded.” TruTac’s range of software for the transport industry is designed with compliance at its core and just as applicable to van operators as to those with heavier vehicles. Its online fleet management portal comprises a suite of software applications for simple, all-round compliance management. The portal includes modular products to keep control of all compliance areas in one place, such as TruView, which illustrates key performance data via clear graphics full back-office reporting. Intelligent fleet management software delivers real-time vehicle planning and maintenance control, with full alerts and reporting. “Get your fleet compliance in order now,” says James, “it always pays dividends to have a safe fleet and safe drivers. We are here and happy to help, even if it’s just a chat over coffee to discuss how your business may be affected.”
