CM SHOW GUIDE

Microlise Conference programme – 1 October The Microlise Transport Conference is a free-to-attend one-day event for fleet operators. Learn from subject matter experts and acquire insights into the future of the transport industry. Meet fellow professionals and ensure you are empowered with the information and knowledge to be successful now and in the future 09:30: Managing vehicle and driver compliance Lee Oliver, head of sales, TruTac In this session, Lee Oliver will outline how to utilise technology to effectively manage all aspects of compliance, from drivers hours and tachograph analysis through to vehicle maintenance and daily checks. With compliance being a must for all operators, the session will focus on how to ensure this is done in such a way that reduces administration but ensures a robust approach. 10:30: Maximising driver performance to realise long-term benefits Neil Selby, senior business transformation manager, Microlise Drivers are the key element of every transport operation, representing an operators' brand whilst out on the road and regularly engaging with customers. Often operators focus on driver performance and achieve improvements, but these are lost over time as other elements of the business take focus. So how can operators realise performance enhancements, but ensure these are long-lasting and continue to drive safety, efficiency and cost reductions? 11:30: Lockdown logistics – the changes in the operating environment Mike Ellis, business development director, Abbey Logistics When the UK went into lockdown, the world changed significantly for operators. One of the key changes was in the operating environment, with a huge reduction in volume of traffic. In this presentation Abbey Logistics will outline the findings of the company’s analysis on the data capturied during this period from its fleet, looking at the changes identified. Abbey will explore how the beneficial changes seen can be realised by industry longer-term, and what changes the industry and government might implement to achieve this aim. 12:30 Logistics in the world of Covid-19 – going contactless Bernie Warner, senior pre-sales consultant, Microlise

10

With human interaction a key driver of coronavirus, operators have had to adapt to this reality and reduce contact throughout the logistics process. Technology can be an enabler in achieving this. In this presentation, Microlise will discuss the role of technology in reducing the need for human interaction, while driving efficiencies and benefits. 13:30: The future of road transport Stephen Watson, product director, Microlise With technology evolving at an ever increasing pace, Stephen Watson will offer a glimpse of the future by looking at what the world might look like in years to come in light of advances in big data, artificial intellience, and other technologies. 14:30: Managing risk and safety with vehicle cameras: Fenton Baker, product owner, Microlise Vehicle cameras have been around for some time, with many fleets in the UK now utilising the technology to protect themselves in the event of an incident occuring. But are these cameras used to full effect? In this presentation, Fenton Baker will discuss the real benefits of vehicle cameras, how they can be used to reduce risk, enhance safety and aid driver training, as well as discussing how real-world footage can be combined with telematics data to create a deep understanding of what happened around incidents and near-misses. 15:30: The connected supply chain – from farm and factory to consumer David Midgley, OEM and channel director, Microlise Transport and logistics firms have been early adaptors of connected technology, helping reduce operating costs and improve customer service. Advances in technology mean many other industries are now looking at the value of connected technology. David Midgley looks at the opportunities of connecting everything and the challenges to be overcome in building a successful industrial internet of things (IIoT) program across the supply chain.

Hydrogen dual-fuel revolution ULEMCo will be on hand at the Commercial Motor Show to demonstrate how its hydrogen technology can take operators’ vehicles beyond Euro-6 on the road to decarbonisation. Recent results from HyTIME, a Low Emission Freight and Logistics Trial project partly funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles in partnership with Innovate UK, showed that more than 14 tonnes of CO2 were saved over a two-year period from 11 urban trucks and vans running on green hydrogen dual-fuel. This was based on displacing between 20% and 45% of the diesel fuel with hydrogen on the various vehicles, which if replicated across a whole fleet would lead to a “radical transformation of emissions”, said ULEMCo. Any Euro-6 diesel commercial vehicle can be hydrogen-enabled using ULEMCo’s H2iCED technology, which allows hydrogen to mix with diesel directly in the engine.

Trials of the technology have included this water tanker

If there is no hydrogen available for some reason, the vehicle will still operate as a standard diesel unit, which ensures operational reliability. This approach, said ULEMCo, allows ultra-low emission mileage now without any need to change operation, other than filling up with hydrogen as well as diesel. The technology is most suited to urban, city and regional duty cycles where the vehicles return to base daily, and the scale of local demand will unlock the investment case for the infrastructure. Commercial vehicles have now been trialled in a range of operations. They include a water tanker for Yorkshire

Water, a road sweeper and domestic waste trucks for Aberdeen City Council, an RCV for operator Grundon, and a regional haulage truck for Wykes Engineering; all applications that would lend themselves well to scaled back-tobase deployment. If an operator has a fleet of around 30 vehicles based at one location, ULEMCo said, there are numerous investors in the UK who will work with that operator to supply the fuel cost-effectively. Visit ULEMCo’s virtual stand at the Commercial Motor Show and find out how you can become part of the hydrogen transport revolution.

Descartes offers a smarter route to compliance Descartes Systems is inviting show visitors to its virtual stand to see how its technology can improve fleet operations and compliance. Risky driving behaviours significantly lower, shows fleet video telematics data Commercial drivers in the UK are being more safety conscious than ever, despite facing new challenges on the roads, according to

26

fleet video telematics provider Lytx. This is a key topic the team from Lytx will be happy to discuss with visitors on its virtual stand at the Commercial Motor Show. New data derived from Lytx’s UK drivingrisk database shows that despite increased pressures as a result of the pandemic, risky driving behaviours are still significantly lower than in the same period in 2019 – in many cases, by up to 50%. This is having a positive impact when minimising the chance of collisions: in the five week period from 8 June to 12 July, more than half (53%) of near-collision incidents were ‘unavoidable’ – meaning the commercial vehicle driver exhibited perfect driving safety behaviours and did nothing to contribute to a near-miss, which could have otherwise turned into a collision. This commitment to best practice comes at a time when commercial fleets

A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT

are contending with busier roads, as the government encourages people back into the workplace with public transport still being avoided by many. Damian Penney, vice-president of Lytx Europe, said: ‘‘Our data shows that commercial drivers are responding incredibly well to busier roads. “We know from conversations with our customers that many fleets have increased their driver coaching during the pandemic and we can see that it has had a positive effect, with best practice behaviours intuitively kicking in when drivers need them most.’’ He added that as the UK continues to “get back to normal”, it remains crucial fleet managers keep using data insights to understand what is happening in and out of the cab – and that those all-important conversations between driver and manager are taking place.

within the wheels. These send data to the on-board TyreWatch controller, which collates the data from all the sensors. A real-time condition report on every tyre is automatically produced, which is simple to view on any device, from mobiles to desktop computers. In addition, TyreWatch technology can support operators with their wider environmental challenges. Optimising rolling resistance, for example, can reduce fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions significantly. The reduced friction can also prevent excessive and premature tyre tread wear, minimising particulate emissions (PM2.5) and microplastic tyre debris. On top of this, TyreWatch can

“virtually eliminate” premature tyre failure in fleets, actively reducing the number of tyres manufactured. The digital technology can be easily integrated with well-known thirdparty telematics platforms, typically solutions that leverage efficiency across operational or regulatory performance. “TyreWatch is smart technology that is simple to use and proven to drive fleet efficiency,” said Glenn Sherwood, director at TyreWatch. “We are delighted to be exhibiting at the Commercial Motor Show and have the opportunity to showcase our product and platform to the transport industry, to demonstrate what is needed tomorrow is available today.”

Lens-Tech offers a simple vision Lens-Tech Co has highlighted two key roles its Hi Vue Fresnel lens blind spot system can play for HGV drivers: preventing ‘dashboard overload’ and acting as an instant ‘disaster recovery kit’ for trucks on the road. The company’s self-adhesive Fresnel lens combines light-bending properties within a small (A5 size), flat PVC or acrylic lens, which presssticks to the passenger side window and immediately offers an at-a-glance lens view of any vulnerable road user situated in the close-proximity mirror blind spot area. Lens-Tech said that while the use of electronic visual means to overcome blind spots – such as cameras and in-cab video monitors – offer the driver a good quality screen display, they can potentially serve to increase the workload. “Sadly, the driver having to avert his eyes from the road ahead so as to look towards the dashboard to seek out the monitor screen has resulted in a lengthening of precious splitsecond visual acquisition time,” said

Lens-Tech CEO Les Haigh. “This new phenomenon, known as ‘dashboard overload’, is the result of electronic video monitoring actually being counterintuitive.” Lens-Tech said its latest Hi Vue Fresnel lens model can also serve as an essential HGV “disaster recovery kit” in the event of electronic visual aids failing, forcing the vehicle off the road for immediate repair. Haigh added: “Fresnel lenses are a very sensible anti-blind spot

back-up system to cover any camera or monitor electronics failure and save the resultant downtime during a truck journey. “Whether already fixed to the inside of the passenger window glass or in standby mode in the glove box, why wouldn’t you want to be armed with a fit-in-seconds, disaster recovery anti-blind spot lens kit?” Explore the full Lens-Tech range on its virtual stand at the Commercial Motor Show.

Two routes to compliance at Backhouse Jones Specialist transport law firm Backhouse Jones will heading to the Commercial Motor Show virtual exhibition hall to highlight its range of expert legal services. The business represents many major logistics operators in the UK, as well as working with a wide range of family-owned hauliers. By concentrating its expertise within the road transport industry, Backhouse Jones said it provides an “identifiably bespoke service completely tailored for logistics”. Because the law firm is industry specific and its staff are fluent in road transport, clients do not have to start their consultation by explaining what

an operator’s licence, a PG9 or an OCRS actually is. Backhouse Jones is regularly appointed to advise trade associations and their members, and the Independent Chambers Guide 2019 describes the business as a “marketleading practice with specialist expertise across the full spectrum of road regulatory matters”. The company offers two subscription schemes: BACKup and BACK Academy. The BACKup scheme effectively stops the clock on legal fees and provides access to 24-hour legal advice in relation to regulatory road transport law (which includes defence of prosecutions

brought against a company and/or its directors) and HR and employment law for a fixed annual fee. The soon-to-be-launched BACK Academy, meanwhile, backs up operators’ knowledge about O-licence compliance management. A BACK Academy subscription allows operators to be refreshed on the role of the transport manager and directors, or receive guidance on how to manage a disciplinary process. Vehicle operators using the service can download the latest transportspecific training, unlimited eTraining modules, articles and webinars direct to their office, depot, workshop or living room.

Isuzu Truck range pulls its weight Isuzu Truck (UK) supplies commercial vehicles from 3.5 tonnes to 13.5 tonnes GVW to the UK market. All are Euro-6, can tow up to 3.5 tonnes, come with a three-year unlimited mileage warranty and Isuzu Assist as standard, and are supported by its unique CARE System customer support. Isuzu Truck (UK) supplies a range of vehicles with a selection of cabs, wheelbases and body specifications, with excellent parts availability, complete servicing solutions and a range of finance options. Many are available with semi-automated transmissions, and dual passenger airbags are standard across the range. The Grafter at 3.5 tonnes (N35) is a robust and reliable vehicle that can handle an impressive amount of mileage during the course of its

working life. New customers are often surprised at how tough and durable the Grafter proves to be in comparison with other manufacturers’ vehicles. Operators say the three main benefits of Isuzu Truck (UK)’s vehicles are their impressive payload capacity, their ease of manoeuvring, and their ability to tow up to 3.5 tonnes. The Grafter has won several awards, most recently being named Best Builder’s Truck for the eighth year running and Light Truck of the Year at

the Great British Fleet Awards 2020. At 7.5 tonnes (N75), Isuzu Truck (UK)’s vehicles have long been admired for their impressive payload capacity, which is far superior to that of many competitors’ vehicles, despite having a physical footprint far smaller than the European manufacturers’ 7.5-tonne vehicles. With their compact dimensions, these vehicles are suited to urban and rural operations, in particular the 7.5-tonner, with low chassis weight giving a higher axle tolerance across the vehicle. The same applies to its larger models at 11 tonnes and 13.5 tonnes (F110 and F135), which also benefit from compact bodies and chassis, boasting footprints no larger than the European manufacturers’ 7.5-tonners but with extra payload.

Lisle Design goes Hyper with new DigidownRDL Since 2005, Lisle Design has manufactured the Digidown range of download tools for digital tachographs. The company says Digidown has become the gold standard for such products, with the Lisle Design name now synonymous with excellence and reliability. This reputation is built on three key tenets: reliable products, first-class customer support and caring for a family of partners and distributors throughout Europe. So what’s new from Lisle Design at the exciting new Commercial Motor Show 2020? “This year we are focused on a new remote downloading product called DigidownRDL and our card hosting product called Hyper,” states the company. “Hyper is a unique and brilliant solution which allows you to overcome USB limitations and host hundreds of company cards on a single PC. “Please visit our stand. You will benefit from finding out why,” it continues. “We live to innovate and make useful products.” Lisle Design says it was the first company to produce a digital tachograph download tool. Since then, its product range has expanded to include download tools, training cases, tools to enhance telematics equipment and support for enforcement and workshops. The company reckons its success is down in no small part to knowing its own partners. “We have partnerships in the UK and elsewhere in Europe stretching from Dublin to Ankara, while also understanding the importance of a local economy,” it states. “The majority of our materials are sourced from within 100km of our base in St Andrews and our products continue to be designed and assembled here. HGV safety: no more false alarms? Trailer Vision is pleased to announce the availability of a new, Direct Vision Standard (DVS)-compliant, optical detection system, Cycle-Safe. Cycle-Safe meets the recommended requirements for the DVS HGV Safety Permit as the system can differentiate between moving objects, such as pedestrians and cyclists, and static objects such as street furniture. The system uses next-generation optical technology combining detection and vision in a single smart camera. Intelligent technology provides drivers with audible alerts and visual warnings, either via a monitor and/or a separate LED/ buzzer.

Operators can choose whether the system is always on, or switched off above 20mph. However, it is recommended the system is always on, as it is also very useful for lane change assist and blind spot warning. General manager Neil Todd said: “It is not inconceivable that the DVS Progressive Safe System review (2024) will call for the use of ‘intelligent’ side-detection systems like Cycle-Safe, rather than allowing the use of ‘dumb’ ultrasonic side-scan/side-detection systems, which are proven to have high false alarm rates. “Visit our stand to find out more about this cutting-edge product that’s set to improve road safety for all.”

Commercial vehicles have a crucial role to play in the UK achieving net zero by 2050 but face some of the toughest challenges in the road transport sector; a ‘one-size-fitsall’ solution is unlikely to emerge. “The Transport Decarbonisation Plan and focus on an investment-led green recovery as the UK emerges from Covid-19 provides a real opportunity to address and overcome such challenges,” he added. “The LowCVP and its members are at the heart of this process, helping to shape and influence the future of road transport for decades to come. Do come and visit us to learn more at the show!”

Axtec helps prevent overloading Axtec is inviting operators to its stand at the online Commercial Motor Show to share its expertise on ensuring fleet vehicles are not inadvertently overloaded. The axle weighing specialist has been manufacturing in-depot weighbridges, on-board and portable devices since its launch in 1991 and said it is the only UK company working exclusively in this field. Its expertise is tapped into by the DVSA for calibration of the UK’s network of national weighbridges, which can be used for prosecuting overloaded vehicles. “Our dynamic system is the most accurate of its type in the world,” said director Derek Hack. “It is the only one that can be offered as a public weighbridge and to achieve that level of accuracy has taken many years of research and investment.” Hack said the company is often called to operators’ depots to replace third party weighbridges that are not

46

functioning as they should. “We’ve been to some axle weighbridges and found out they are weighing three tonnes too light, for example,” he said. “It’s not as straightforward as people think and is very easy to get it wrong. That’s why we do everything in-house; have all our own engineers, builders and maintenance teams.” For operators wanting to assess existing systems, Axtec will carry out

a free-of-charge calibration check and certificate on any makes of existing axle weighbridges they may have installed at their depots. “It can be quite an eye-opener for them,” said Hack. The team from Axtec will be on hand throughout the live CM Show and happy to chat about any overloading concerns you may have, or provide guidance on different types of axle weighing equipment.

Fastview360 camera keeps driver in control Fastview360 says it “was born out of the haulage industry” and understands the issues the transport industry has when it comes to accidents, drivers’ behaviour and safety. The business has approached the development of its products with the haulier and HGVs in mind, so everything is solid, strong and very reliable. It offers an unlimited extended warranty and said it is more than happy to back that up with its “unmatched service standards that only come from the transport industry’s work ethic”. All cameras are HD 1080P quality and the case is manufactured in durable cast aluminium. The DVR has a 2TB hard disk in and, depending on the configuration, can store months of video, while Fastview’s cloud-based software, AutoCMS, monitors all the hardware in real time to let you know if it is working or not. The Direct Vision Standard 2020 regulation is all about safety, but unless a firm’s drivers tell the fleet manager that a camera has stopped working or a side sensor is broken, they will never

know, suggests Fastview360 – even though it is the company that is liable for the fine. Fastview’s monitored system, however, is tested whenever it is live and will tell you if it is working or not, to keep you in control. “If you want a high-quality camera system on the market and are passionate about the safety of your staff and members of the public, then please ask us what our system does and how we work with our customers,” said Nick Billington, Fastview360 head of sales. “The directors of Fastview360 are haulage experts; they understand what drivers can face and the product is there to safeguard drivers and vehicles, and protect from fraudulent claims,” he added.

Logico is inviting fleet operators to its virtual stand at the Commercial Motor Show to provide free guidance on key compliance and performance issues. The business can provide bespoke support for road transport operators in auditing, human resources, staff training and external transport management. It also specialises in working with companies to help them achieve DVSA Earned Recognition status. Logico’s aim is to help road hauliers streamline their operations and strengthen their compliance, therefore giving valuable time back to the business. “We can provide anyone interested with a free consultation and an explanation of how Logico can support a business in achieving compliance of the highest standards,” said Samantha Williams, business manager at Logico. “The DVSA continues to crack down on irresponsible transport operations,” she continued. “Logico can assist fleets in achieving recognition from the DVSA for high operational standards, making life a whole lot easier for everyone.”

CM SHOW GUIDE

SHOW-STOPPERS EVENTS: 1970 COMMERCIAL MOTOR SHOW

As preparations continue for the new virtual Commercial Motor Show, CM takes a look back at the event’s milestone 25th anniversary to check out the stars of the day WORDS: RICHARD STANIER Exactly 50 years ago the 25th Commercial Motor Show opened at Earl’s Court, showcasing a display of vehicles from a remarkable number of manufacturers. The British Leyland Group alone was exhibiting as many marques of heavy truck as are currently offered on the British market, and PSV and van manufacturers were also well represented alongside 26 mainly domestic trailer manufacturers. We take a look back at some the new models on display at that time.

ALBION Glaswegian manufacturer Albion had four chassis on show, featuring two examples each of its Reiver and Clydesdale designs. Albion had announced the introduction of the turbocharged

50

Leyland 410 engine in 1969, but Earl’s Court saw the first appearance of this engine installed beneath high–line Ergomatic cabs with revised frontal styling. Despite improved suspension and braking, and appearing to be an attractive proposition in Albion’s traditional no-frills haulage niche, the new CD41 and RE41 models were destined never to reach production, with the Albion name being withdrawn a couple of years later; an early casualty in Leyland’s decadelong rationalisation process.

Non-runner: (top left) the Albion Clydesdale CD41 had a turbocharged engine, but never reached the market

ATKINSON 1970 saw the introduction of the legendary Atkinson Borderer tractor unit, of which two examples were exhibited: a 34-ton model powered by a Cummins 205hp engine, and a 32-ton version with the trusty Gardner 180. Also exhibited

were Leader, Venturer and Defender models, marking the introduction of model names for the standard range. Talk around the stand would have been about Atkinson’s recent acceptance of a takeover bid from ERF, with the ultimately successful bid from Seddon Diesel Vehicles being made shortly afterwards, resulting in Seddon Atkinson models replacing the 1970 Atkinsons within five years.

BEDFORD As might be expected, Bedfords were out in force at the 1970 show, with no less than 15 vehicles being displayed on the manufacturer’s stand, from the HA 8cwt up to the 24–ton KM tractor unit, including the new YRQ bus chassis, and the almost–new CF van making its first appearance at Earl’s Court. Of major interest to the truck fraternity at the show was the new

civilian version of the M Type 4x4 truck, which was announced in May following the success of the military versions that had recently entered service.

COMMER Of the six Commer and Karrier chassis at Earls Court, none were entirely

CM SHOW GUIDE new designs but the Chrysler–owned company was taking the opportunity to display the handywork of its new Special Equipment Operations department which was busy tailoring existing chassis for new uses. These included a Walk-Thru model adapted as a tractor unit, and a VC5 truck converted with the addition of a York trailing axle to a 14.4-ton vehicle with 8.25-17 wheels. Remarkably, Commer was not offering a standard– production 6-wheeler at this time.

Hitting the spot: praised for its luxury and high quality fittings, the DAF FT 2200 was new for 1970

DAF In 1969 the UK exported over £168mworth of commercial vehicles and imported just over 5% of that, but the continental manufacturers were becoming more interested in the British market. DAF appeared at the show for the first time since 1966, having recently established a subsidiary at Feltham, and had four vehicles on show including a 2600 and a terminal tractor. But of particular note were two tractor units featuring the new F218 tilt cab. The more powerful example was an FT 2200 with a turbocharged 8.25-litre diesel developing 201hp.

DENNIS The long-established Dennis Brothers of Guildford was still active in the general haulage vehicle market in 1970, and it presented four truck chassis at Earl’s Court: three of its existing DB rigid models and a brand new tractor unit – the Defiant. The Defiant was a lightweight 4x2 for operation at 24 tons GTW and had the distinction of being the first British vehicle to feature the turbocharged Perkins T6.354 as standard. The 155hp engine drove through Dennis’ own Lightweight option: the Dennis Defiant was claimed to be 10cwt lighter than other 24-ton tractors, but failed to win significant market share

gearbox to a 2-speed Eaton axle. The lack of sales for vehicles such as this led to Dennis successfully re-focusing on buses and municipal chassis in the 1980s.

DODGE Like its Chrysler colleagues at Commer, Dodge exhibited a 4x2 chassis adapted with an extra axle, but augmented this with the KT 900 factory–built 6x4 which would have been a better proposition for site work. 1970 also saw the then heaviest British Dodge displayed in the form of the KP 1000 tractor unit. The KP 1000 was a 28-ton GTW vehicle powered by the Perkins V8.510 engine following its re-launch in 1969. Initial versions were powered by the Cummins VALE engine, and the KP 1000 remained the biggest Dodge artic until the arrival of Spanish-built 32-ton vehicles in 1973.

export. But the most notable exhibit was the new A Series tractor unit which heralded the first stage of a reappraisal of the entire ERF truck range. The A Series had a new slatted grille, twin headlamps and parallel chassis frames with the fuel and air tanks, batteries, and longer springs all mounted on the outside. The 4x2 A Series at Earl’s Court was powered by the new Gardner 8LXB, straight-8 engine which developed 240hp.

FIAT Having shown its new cab designs in Geneva and Amsterdam earlier in the year, Fiat brought its new 684, 619 and 697 models to London for the benefit of British hauliers. The 684 was a modestly powered 200hp

The Italian job: 1970 saw brand new models from a host of manufacturers including Fiat with its 619 T1

ERF ERF displayed five chassis in 1970, ranging from a Gardner 100-powered 16-ton model to a Cummins 310-powered 6x4 tractor unit, equipped with a steel sleeper cab for

This engine powered the 38-tonne 4x2 tractor unit in the form of the 619 T1, which also featured a sleeper, but non–tilting, cab and an 8-speed splitter gearbox as standard.

GUY Having only been under British Leyland control for a couple of years, Guy Motors was still afforded some autonomy to develop its Big J range For operational service: the Leyland Turbine had received some improvements to the 1968 prototype and was shown in operator colours

FODEN Foden used the 1970 show to announce a rationalisation of its cab range, which was to be refined to four designs for future production. These were the S60 steel, or S70 plastic, two-man cabs with reverse sloping windscreen, the S50 one-man version of these cabs, and its older S39 cab. The Gardner 240-powered Chinesesix 38-ton tractor, resplendent with the S70 plastic cab, would, Foden believed, be the “centre of interest” at the show. Whether it was or not is unknown, but history records that Foden was back with another cab design – the famous S80 with its 11in headlights – at Earl’s Court in 1972.

LEYLAND

What a Guy: rated at 34 tons GTW, this Big J4T was powered by the Rolls-Royce Eagle 265

as it saw fit, and power is what the men from Wolverhampton had decided on. In addition to three standard models, Guy also exhibited a Cummins 35-powered Big J8 8x4 chassis, designed for use at 56 tons GTW which was the joint most powerful truck to attend Earl’s Court Of more interest to domestic operators was a new version of the Big J4T powered by the recently introduced Rolls-Royce Eagle 265hp turbocharged engine.

Leyland Motors was probably at the peak of its power in 1970, and this was reflected at Earl’s Court. With no new models from long-time competitor/ colleague AEC, Leyland exhibited its new integral National bus, and its Gas Turbine tractor, alongside more familiar domestic and export models. Although the Turbine model had originally been shown at 1968’s show, the 1970 exhibits were “for operational service” and three such liveried examples were on display with tanker manufacturers, in addition to the unit shown by Leyland. With less fanfare, but a much brighter operational future, the new Leyland Terrier also made its debut on the Leyland (Scotland) stand, following the renaming of the former BMC brand.

MAGIRUS DEUTZ Magirus Deutz had been represented in Britain by a joint venture with Seddon

Future proof: one of the most modern cab designs was seen on this Magirus Deutz 250 D 22 FS

CM SHOW GUIDE Diesel Vehicles since 1967, following the brief and unsuccessful Magirus Concessionaires operation which had been established in Ashford in 1965. Seddon– Deutz had already earned a good reputation with normal-control dump trucks and in addition to these an impressive long-haul tractor was exhibited at Earl’s Court. The 250 D 22 FS was a 44-ton GTW 6x4 machine with a 250hp V10 Deutz engine and 12-speed gearbox, with the twin-bunk sleeper cab being shown in left-hand drive form.

bution logistics back in 1970, but they were available for light transport duties. In fact, the Morrison Electricar A1 was the only new light vehicle at Earl’s Court, and was shown in both van and pick-up forms. The little pick-up was designed for a payload of 5cwt, with a range of 25 miles per battery charge; speeds of up to 33mph were possible from the 48V battery. The reinforced plastic bodywork was hinged behind the doors, enabling the rear section to be lifted for access to the chassis and driveline components.

MERCEDES-BENZ

SCAMMELL

Among a wide range of vehicles exhibited by Mercedes-Benz were a couple of top weight tractor units with the highly regarded forward-control cab. The LPS 2024 was a twin-steer 38-ton GTW truck, but the LPS 1418 was more suitable for Britain, being a 4x2 tractor unit for 32-ton use. Powered by the OM 346 185hp, 10.8-litre engine, the LPS 1418 featured power-assisted steering and a 5-speed synchromesh gearbox, and gained particular attention for the quality of trim and finish of the high-mounted cab which featured two access steps and a virtually flat floor.

Representing British Leyland’s heaviest duty models, Scammell – alongside the Thornycroft marque it had custody of – was displaying the biggest new vehicle of the show: the Scammell Samson was a development of 1968’s Crusader Model, of which two examples were also shown. The Samson was effectively a 6x4 Crusader with an additional steering axle added for a GCW of 75 tons. Powered by a Detroit Diesel V8 two-stroke with 290hp, the concept was to build a

cost-effective heavy haulage tractor based on a standard model, but the capability of the existing Crusader became such that it rendered the Samson redundant and the show exhibit remained a unique specimen.

SCANIA The Scania LB 110 had been winning friends in Britain since the Summer of 1968, and the smaller LB 80 was also becoming highly regarded, having been introduced in 1969. But the Earl’s Court event saw the first British showing of the new LB 140. Unveiled at the Frankfurt show the preceding year, the 140 was the first vehicle to be powered by the new Scania V8 engine, which at this time was the DS 14 14.2-litre turbocharged unit rated at 350hp. The example on the Scania stand was a left-hand-drive LBT 140 6x4 tractor unit with tilting sleeper cab.

SEDDON Like Guy, Seddon was showing a tractor unit powered by the new Rolls-Royce 265hp engine, which was also the first Seddon to have a Fuller Roadranger gearbox.

CM SHOW GUIDE A big change to the Seddon range was that its 16:Four models started to receive the same cab as its 32-ton tractors, as opposed to the cab used on its 13:Four models, which was 10in shorter. The 16:Four 28-ton tractor on the Seddon display featured improved cab trim, a parallel chassis frame and a Perkins V8 510 motor.

UNIPOWER Among the interesting equipment on display by Unipower was an airfield crash tender chassis destined for Ceylon and a bogie designed to convert Leyland Mastiff 4-wheelers to 6x2s. The principal exhibit was a new version of the Invader 4x4 truck which had premiered at the previous show with a Motor Panels cab. The 1970 Invader featured an alternative, low-mounted cab and was One for the people: the Scania V8 made its British debut at Earl’s Court in an LBT 140 tractor unit

Ticking all the boxes: specialist vehicle producer Unipower exhibited this Invader recovery truck at the show

equipped with Dial–Holmes twin-boom recovery equipment rated at 18 tons. Power was provided by the Perkins V8 510 engine with a 5-speed main gearbox and 2-speed transfer box.

VOLVO Ailsa Trucks of Barrhead was still Volvo’s representative in the UK in 1970, and it had recently acquired the marketing rights

to EKA recovery equipment, so it was fitting that one of two F86 trucks on the stand featured this gear. The F86 had just received the new TD 70B engine with an uprated output of 207hp and a correspondingly strengthened R51 gearbox. The Volvo F88 was represented in the form of a 6x4 tractor unit which was shown with a 270hp turbocharged diesel, heavy duty R60 8-speed gearbox and hub reduction axles, plated for 110 tons GCW. Taking the limelight: Volvo’s F86 received a more powerful engine, but its 110-ton FB 88 stole the show

The next step up: Seddon’s 16:Four tractor received a taller cab with an improved interior

From large vans like the Ford Transit to refuse trucks, road sweepers and other urban or regional HGV, fleets of vehicles can become hydrogen enabled, and get the benefit of reduced GHG emissions.
