Joint enterprise Maintenance, repair and diagnostics services HQT|CNN OCLQT|EQOOGTEKCN XGJKENG OCPWHCEVWTGTU WORKSHOP SERVICES Alltrucks was founded in 2013 as a joint venture by three leading automotive and commercial vehicle OEM suppliers: Bosch, Knorr-Bremse and ZF. Under the Alltrucks Truck and Trailer Service brand, commercial vehicle workshops offer comprehensive services for the maintenance and repair of commercial vehicles across all brands. These services include multibrand vehicle diagnostics, which is key for operators running mixed fleets of different ages. Alltrucks partners have access to technical databases and information to ensure the correct components are fitted according to OEM specifications. The network has an extensive multibrand parts catalogue. It includes all original manufacturer data and an integrated VIN search for all seven major commercial vehicle manufacturers. Alltrucks workshops are backed by comprehensive training courses

for staff, covering Alltrucks’ multibrand diagnostic tester, multitrailer EBS and efficient diagnosis on exhaust gas control systems. A technical hotline allows workshops to deliver a high level of commercial vehicle expertise for all vehicles and systems. This is backed by the original equipment expertise of Bosch, Knorr-Bremse and ZF.
EUROPEAN COVERAGE Alltrucks has a network of 700 workshops across Europe, making it the largest independent workshop network in Europe. It was first launched in Germany and Austria, followed by Switzerland, Italy, Spain, France, Poland, Portugal and Norway. In 2021, there was a further expansion into Lithuania and Romania. In 2023, the company brought its offering to customers in the UK. There are now nine partner workshops operating across the UK. The network continues to expand in existing markets and into other countries. In 2021 the company launched Alltrucks Fleet, a service package

for fleet customers. This is a uniform performance and quality promise across the Alltrucks service network in Europe. In addition to the availability of workshops throughout Europe, Alltrucks Fleet gives operators preferential treatment when receiving repairs, a simple release process and a 24-hour roadside assistance service. Alltrucks Assist 24 gets customers back on the road quickly and reliably. There is a free emergency number that is valid throughout Europe. Over the next three years, the company will focus its efforts on registering vehicles with Alltrucks Fleet. The package is supported by an online platform that connects Alltrucks, the workshops and the fleet. The entire process – from identification and localisation to processing and documentation of repairs and services – can be mapped via the platform. It allows for simple communication and easy identification of vehicles. It also streamlines the repair process. Alltrucks Fleet regularly provides new exclusive services for partner workshops and fleets on top of solutions for an all-round service for tachographs. To help operators locate the closest Alltrucks partner workshop, its website has a workshop finder.

Buying Guide: Brigade
Impact assessment Safety specialist launches Radar Predict to meet DVS Progressive Safe System requirements COLLISION PREDICTION Brigade has been enhancing commercial vehicle and plant safety since 1976 and it is now a market leader in vehicle safety systems. With a worldwide network of subsidiaries and approved distributors, Brigade has a local specialist to help with safety requirements for all fleets. Its latest product, Radar Predict, was brought to market to cover the new DVS Progressive Safe System requirements. Radar Predict is an award-winning advanced collision prediction system designed to protect cyclists from collisions with HGVs. Using AI technology, a dual-radar captures and analyses data such as the speed and direction of both the vehicle and the cyclist. By differentiating between static and moving objects, the Radar Predict algorithm alerts the driver when an impact with a cyclist is likely. The previous Safety Permit required obstacle detection systems on the nearside. The Progressive Safe System
requires technology that predicts collisions based on the trajectories of the vehicle and the vulnerable road user (VRU), to calculate if a collision is imminent. There is also a specified alarm strategy to warn the driver of the severity of the situation. For instance, if the vehicle and VRU are travelling in the same direction on a parallel path to each other, they can continue to do so for an infinite time, even if they are in close proximity. This does not constitute an imminent collision and therefore the driver would not need to receive an audible warning. If the VRU were on a collision path with the vehicle, then an audible and visual warning alarm would be triggered. The unit is positioned on the nearside of the truck and gives complete coverage to the side of the vehicle. Brigade’s system works interchangeably with different trailers. The driver is alerted if a cyclist enters the detection zone and receives a second warning if a collision is predicted. Radar Predict issues warnings at three levels:
Level 1 warning: This activates when the steering wheel angle is less than 30 degrees, and a cyclist or pedestrian enters the warning zone. In this instance, a section of yellow warning LEDs illuminates. Level 2 warning: When the vehicle turns left with a steering wheel angle exceeding 30 degrees, and a collision with a cyclist or pedestrian is anticipated within a specific time frame, Radar Predict triggers a Level 2 warning. Yellow warning LEDs begin to flash in this situation. Level 3 warning: If the vehicle turns left, the steering wheel angle surpasses 30 degrees or the turn indicator is activated, and a collision becomes imminent, Radar Predict initiates a Level 3 warning. This includes flashing yellow warning LEDs and an audible alert. The system assists the driver in identifying the cyclist’s position.

Buying Guide: Close Brothers Asset Finance
Positive thinking Business Sentiment Index shows cautious optimism continuing to return for UK SMEs FINANCE Close Brothers Asset Finance’s Business Sentiment Index (BSI), which measures SME business confidence, has risen modestly for the second consecutive research period, reversing 2022’s downward trend. Unlike earlier in 2023, however, there were marked differences between the various sectors, with transport and haulage experiencing a rise in confidence, while others saw their BSI scores fall back after gains in the first half of the year. The headwinds facing small and medium-sized firms have abated somewhat, with inflation falling back and energy prices stabilising. However, interest rates rises and cost of funds remain concerns for many business owners.
APPETITE FOR INVESTMENT Overall, the appetite to invest remained stable, with three-quarters of UK firms
BSI SCORES June 2020 to September 2023 Research date BSI score % change* Sep 23 21.75 +9% May 23 20.00 +74% Dec 22 11.50 -19% Jul 22 14.25 -49% Feb 22 27.90 -12% Sep 21 31.75 +11% Apr 21 28.63 +97% Nov 20 14.50 +18% Jun 20 12.25 * compared with previous research period

aiming to seek funding for investment in the next 12 months. There were a number of modest fluctuations in sentiment, with the most notable change seen in transport and haulage, where the number of firms planning to seek funding fell by 19 percentage points to 62% (from 81%).
MISSED OPPORTUNITIES The number of companies that have missed business opportunities because of a lack of available funding continued to fall, from 51% at the end of 2022 to 45% in May 2023 and 41% in September 2023. We are starting to achieve more normalised levels for this question, last seen in May 2022, when 37% of respondents answered ‘yes’ to ‘Have you missed a business opportunity in the last 12 months, due to lack of available finance?’
ECONOMIC OUTLOOK Businesses continue to be more negative than positive about the macro-economic outlook. However, the gap between positive and negative sentiment has narrowed this year compared with 2022. There was no change between May 2023 and September 2023 in the cumulative result. This indicator has contributed most to the decline in the overall BSI to the end of 2022, and it is worth remembering that in November 2021 75% of respondents were positive about the economy – by December 2022 this had fallen to just 36% and it has risen only 6 percentage points through 2023.
PREDICTED PERFORMANCE Predictions about future business performance remained stable, with the
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT
majority expecting their prospects to stay unchanged. Matt Roper, CEO of Close Brothers’ commercial business, said: “It’s pleasing to see that positivity is continuing to return to the market – albeit not at the rate we would all like to see – but the reality is the UK’s SME community continues to face a wide variety of challenges. “What continues to impress me, though, is firms’ appetite to invest in their future and the number of them that are expecting to expand in the coming year. “We are looking forward to working with those business owners in the coming months and years.”

Buying Guide: Colson Trailers
Carry on carrying Trailers for all requirements available in a range of standard designs or built to order for the customer TRAILER SUPPLIES Colson Trailers is a division of family-run waste management specialist Colson Transport. After many years of operating vehicles in the waste sector, Colson decided to design and build its own trailers suited to the requirements of the various jobs it carries out. Following nearly four years of development, Colson’s first trailer was completed in 2021. Located in Heanor, Derbyshire, Colson Trailers now manufactures its own scrap, half-pipe, heavy-duty and Agglite aggregate trailers, as well as rock armour trailers, aluminium bulk trailers and low-loaders. Overseen by Colson’s engineers, the trailers are built overseas and can be designed, painted and liveried to customer specifications. At 6.4 tonnes – a full tonne less than
14
the standard half-pipe – with a side-toside sheet, Colson’s Agglite is becoming well established in the market. The Agglite is made using 3mm Hardox 500 high-strength steel as a hardwearing alternative to aluminium. At a comparable weight to the aluminium equivalent, the 3mm-thick steel model is 1 tonne lighter than similar designs using 4mm Hardox 450. The company’s scrap metal trailer has a pillarless rear design to allow unhindered offloading of materials more safely. The barn door air-locking closures mean the rear can be safely unlocked and the doors released remotely. This prevents driver injuries associated with shifted loads pushing the doors open. Colson can also equip fleets with grab buckets. Heavy-duty pins, bushings and 450 Hardox cutting edges make the buckets very robust and durable.
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT
With a 500-litre capacity and a wide opening aperture, grab jobs are completed quickly and efficiently. If the standard trailers Colson supplies are not suited to a particular application, the company can manufacture trailers based on an operator’s specific needs and preferences. For operators interested in hiring trailers, Colson has a fleet of scrap and tipper trailers available on short- and long-term hire contracts. All trailers are fully serviced and ideal for materials such as aggregates, muck or rock. Colson’s trailer hire service is suitable for all ranges of industries including construction, aggregate and rock haulage and agriculture.

Buying Guide: Ecooltec
Cool solutions Electrically driven transport refrigeration machines use environmentally friendly refrigerants REFRIGERATION Transport refrigeration specialist Ecooltec Grosskopf has developed a generation of purely electrically driven transport refrigeration machines. These units are extremely powerful, economical and highly efficient – and, thanks to their natural refrigerants, they cool cargo in a sustainable manner. The Ecooltec TM182 refrigeration unit can be operated electrically from the truck engine via an in-house high-performance alternator, a battery or a separate power generator – which negates the need for an integrated diesel engine. Unlike widely used diesel refrigeration machines, the Ecooltec unit produces neither local pollutant nor CO2 emissions when in battery operation, and up to 98% fewer emissions via the alternator drive. Instead of the fluorinated refrigerants (hydrofluorocarbons) R452A and R410A, which are predominantly used in transport refrigeration and have GWP (Global Warming Potential) values of about 2,000, Ecooltec relies on natural refrigerants with GWP values of 3 and 1 respectively. The European F-Gas Regulation restricts the use of all fluorinated refrigerants, and a general ban is being discussed at an EU level because their decomposition properties in the atmosphere are responsible for the formation of environmentally harmful substances such as trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Such a ban will restrict the operational life of refrigeration systems, especially when refrigerants are no longer available for servicing. Rising prices for F-gases
22
are already causing operating costs to rise considerably and will continue to do so. The Ecooltec design pays very close attention to maximum operational safety. Since hydrocarbon-based refrigerant R1270 is flammable, Ecooltec has secured the system against leakage into the structure by using a fully hermetic refrigeration circuit and an incredibly small refrigerant charge – down by 90% when compared with conventional transport refrigeration systems. The Ecooltec TM182 can be mounted on semi-trailers and rigid vehicle bodies. Thanks to the specially developed inverter, it can be connected to all common types of drive. This year Ecooltec attended the ATMOsphere Europe Summit 2023, one of the top meetings of the world’s leading experts on natural refrigerants. The environmental association presented Ecooltec’s TM182 transport refrigeration system with the ATMO Innovation of the Year/Refrigeration award. This was in recognition of the technological solution for the use of natural refrigerants in

combination with an all-electric drive in temperature-controlled road transport. Ferdinand Bierbichler is one of the first companies to purchase the TM182 transport refrigeration machine. The food distribution company put the first truck with an Ecooltec system into operation some time ago now and will equip 12 trucks with this refrigeration system this year. Fleet manager Fritz Taucher says: “We have chosen the transport refrigeration system from Ecooltec because it is very sustainable and environmentally friendly. The drive and refrigeration technology based on natural refrigerants are a unique combination in our vehicle sector. The refrigeration system has been performing reliably. The system cools very efficiently and quickly reaches the set temperature. This is ideal for our operation, which has numerous unloading points, many door openings and high-quality, perishable cargo.”

Buying Guide: Fastview360
Perfect pictures Recording technology and integrated software can help with planning, training and insurance claims CCTV SYSTEMS Fastview360 specialises in on-board CCTV vehicle recording systems. Its camera solutions help protect drivers in the event of a traffic incident or dispute. Systems can be added to existing vehicle tracking and load planning software, saving time, money and hassle when it comes to insurance claims. To help transport managers streamline fleet operations, Fastview360 launched the Fastview360 Portal. Designed with simplicity in mind, the portal is a central hub for tracking, live view, claims, telematics, driver behaviour and route planning. The Fastview360 Portal can integrate with existing systems, so if there is already hardware of a suitable standard fitted, there is no need to purchase new kit. If there are no camera systems in place, Fastview360 offers high-quality 1080p HD cameras with 3G/4G mobile connectivity. The cloud-based platform makes reviewing footage quick and simple.
Video footage is automatically collected and two months’ worth of video data can be stored on the DVR. The portal pairs with a driver app that allows the driver to add the information required for an insurance claim while at the scene. This includes extra videos and photographs, witness information, the driver’s description of what happened, police incident numbers and descriptions of damage. The driver app also has a dedicated area for vehicle inspections and an in-vehicle to office messaging and communication tool. Managers can use the tracking app to access live vehicle location information. For fleets running refrigerated units, the Fastview360 Portal integrates fridge unit temperature monitoring to ensure compliance and energy efficiency. Reviewing driver footage can be an invaluable training tool to illustrate harsh braking, speeding or hard cornering. While telematics details these data points, having a visual aid to explain real examples can assist drivers in understanding how to improve their
driving style. This can lead to savings in fuel, tyres and general wear on the truck. Operators receive training on how to use the system and customers have access to aftersales support including refresher training and incident investigation services. Before the new DVS rules are enforced, it is important that fleets assess their safety systems and consider future-proofing vehicles now. There are about 250,000 vehicles likely to be affected by the upcoming changes to the DVS. This includes a requirement to fit a Progressive Safe System (PSS) to vehicles operating in Greater London. Vehicles with an existing Safe System kit will need to update their equipment and others with no provision will be required to update safety technology or risk fines. A PSS includes blind spot monitoring with accurate warnings, a moving off information system (MOIS) to cover the blind spot directly in front of the vehicle and an audible turning alert. In preparation for the changes to the DVS, the Fastview360 Portal allows operators complete visibility over their fleets. Fastview360’s suite of camera technology is FORS, CLOCS, HS2 and DVS compliant.

Buying Guide: Fueltek
Fill up with data Datanozzle automatically gathers details HQT|HWGN|NQIIKPI CPF ƃGGV OCPCIGOGPV FUEL MANAGEMENT The Datanozzle is an innovative method that allows access to Fueltek’s fuel management system. It is available on any FT4000 Fuel Access Control Terminal (FACT) product variant. Traditionally, data has been captured at the point of fuelling using handheld datatags, cards, keys or keypad entries. Datanozzle improves on this accepted standard, using proximity datatags. It’s a secure system that can be used in conjunction with another device,
such as a handheld datatag, to increase security. Datanozzle comprises an RFID reader moulded into a fuel nozzle boot that reads a vehicle-mounted passive datatag. The anti-tamper datatag can be mounted in a position on the vehicle near the filler neck and is rendered useless if someone tries to remove it. When the vehicle pulls up to the fuel pump, the driver simply inserts the nozzle into the vehicle filler neck and starts to fuel. The relevant data is captured automatically, simplifying a fleet’s fuel logging and management.
Whenever a vehicle is fuelled, the FT4000 system knows exactly how much fuel is taken on board and – if the automatic mileage entry is used – how far the vehicle has travelled. Automatic data gathering means driver error is eliminated and the operator can be confident that fuel security is complete. Fuel monitoring and management functions are carried out through Fueltek FMO web-based software.

A survey conducted by Microsoft revealed that more than 90% of individuals would contemplate shifting their business elsewhere if they discovered their suppliers were clinging to outdated technology or traditional methods such as pen and paper. HaulTech, a Midlands-based company established in 1997, has developed Transport Management
Software (TMS) that supports more than 400 UK-based haulage firms in creating a seamless, efficient and connected operation. Its goal is to eliminate administrative burdens found in businesses that use paper or Excel spreadsheets to manage their day-to-day operations.
TMS gives hauliers the power to do their work in a smarter, faster and more connected way. With just a single point of data entry, users have to enter job information only once – and within a few clicks the work can be assigned to a driver. Once the driver completes the job, they simply photograph their collection/ delivery paperwork and the electronic POD is sent back to the system instantaneously, ready for the accounts team to invoice. HaulTech reports that software adopters are significantly reducing administrative time and completing work 40% quicker than they did before implementing its TMS. Many transport system users are scaling up their businesses without having to invest in more resources, thanks to the powers of HaulTech’s TMS.

Buying Guide: Lens-Tech
Line of sight Hi Vue lenses offer an economical way to reduce blind spots and improve safety on the roads FRESNEL LENSES Lens-Tech designs and produces Hi Vue Fresnel lenses to help drivers see their blind spots. Safety features such as low-entry cabs, retrofitted glass doors and camera systems can be effective ways to improve visibility, but these are often expensive options. The lenses are a simple, low-cost way to improve visibility and make vehicles safer. They are typically priced at £9.99 each (plus VAT), and discounts are available for orders of 10 or more units. The lenses are made from PVC or acrylic and can be easily attached to windows, thanks to a self-adhesive peel-back edge. A series of concentric rings creates a short focal length to bend the light so the lens increases the view out of the cab window by 30 degrees. This is usually enough to eliminate blind spots caused by doors, panels and pillars. A report from the Transport Research Laboratory concluded the lens could reduce between 78% and 90% of potential blind spots. The lenses are thin, lightweight and take up a nominal amount of window space at 210mm x 120mm.
28
Lens-Tech CEO Les Haigh says: “They are an at-a-glance device. If a cyclist or a pedestrian were moving through the lens’s field of vision, you wouldn’t see them in your nearside window glass, but you would see them through the lens. It gives a little more time for the driver to spot someone and respond quickly.” In the UK, the lenses are issued by National Highways through the DVSA, police, highway enforcement officers and UK port border forces for left-handdrive vehicles. They assist drivers in avoiding lane-change accidents caused by mirror blind spot ‘side-swipe’. Lens-Tech supplies Fresnel wide-angle peeper window lenses to Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) and Kenworth Trucks, US. These are designed to go on peeper windows and reveal the blind spot created by the front pillar and the truck’s long, bull-nose tractor front. Lens-Tech is expanding its lens distribution overseas, with Australia’s Transport for New South Wales being the latest to test and approve Hi Vue as an anti-blind spot device. The organisation is advising transport operators to use the lens to avoid lane-change and closeproximity accidents.
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT
Transport for NSW tested the effectiveness of the Fresnel lens in minimising passenger-side blind spots on HGVs and driver attitudes towards using the lens. The trial found that 61% of participants reported that having the Fresnel lens made driving a bit safer, while 15% indicated the lens had helped them avoid a potential crash one or more times during the evaluation. Transurban in Queensland is now trialling the lenses after recording the highest fatality rate in more than a decade last year on the state and local road network. In December 2022 alone, 45% of serious-injury incidents on Transurban’s Queensland network had blind spot-affected merging events between HGVs and LCVs as contributing factors.

Buying Guide: Microlise
Transport tech Comprehensive management software allows operators to automate a range of tasks TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, efficient transport management is vital for businesses to stay competitive and deliver exceptional customer experiences. For logistics providers, responding to the challenges of responsible growth is an essential commercial requirement. For more than 30 years, Microlise has provided reliable technology solutions, backed by outstanding customer service, to help transport and logistics companies manage their operations efficiently. Microlise’s Transport Management System (TMS) provides core functionalities to create, cost, process, plan, deliver and invoice a customer order. Through accurate reporting, it also provides the data to underpin future decision-making and can help to reduce costs, improve cashflow, enhance
efficiency, streamline invoicing processes, eliminate delivery paperwork, increase customer satisfaction and reduce wasted time. The system is cloud-based, so it is secure and can be implemented with minimal effort. It is an end-toend solution that offers modules incorporating transport management, vehicle tracking and vehicle checks, route planning, warehouse management system (WMS) integration, electronic proof of delivery and the capability for third-party integration. Records of regular customers can be managed to expedite the process and minimise the need to re-enter details. Once in the system, loads can be consolidated. Larger orders bound for a single destination can be grouped and spread across multiple vehicles where necessary, while smaller orders can be consolidated by vehicle for multidrop journeys. The system enables optimal route planning and jobs can be costed using customisable rate tables.
The TMS allows day-to-day tasks to be automated – such as sending consignments for preparation through integration with a WMS or directly to picking staff. Once gathered, individual items or whole pallets can be marked with a barcode in readiness to be scanned and loaded onto a vehicle. From here, drivers set off with their list of jobs in order of delivery on the ePOD app and delivery paperwork is all but eliminated. Using GPS, the transport office can see where the vehicle is at all times – and through a dedicated portal, the company’s customers can see how their orders are progressing. At each delivery, items are scanned off the vehicle and signatures are captured. Proof of damaged goods or ‘no replies’ can be recorded using the device camera within the app. Proof of delivery information is sent to office staff, facilitating instant invoicing. Microlise’s TMS was added to its product rage as a result of the acquisition of Vita Software and is currently offered as a standalone product. It will soon become a fully integrated solution with the rest of the Microlise suite of products under a single, comprehensive warranty. Logistics providers who adopt technology to integrate their value chain digitally have the advantage of better forecasting, helping them to adjust capacity and adapt to an ever-changing landscape. Technology in transport and logistics is no longer a luxury – to remain competitive, it is a necessity.

Following the launch of the new eActros 600, Northside is ready to support customers in their transition to zero-carbon solutions. The eActros 600 is a long-haul battery electric truck with a range of 500km. It features a new 800V electric axle with twin motors offering a continuous output of 400kW and a peak output of 600kW with a 4-speed transmission. The eActros 600 is fitted with three lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cell technology batteries for a combined capacity of 621kWh. Combined Charging System (CCS) charging up to 400kW will enable operators to travel up to 1,000km a day with intermediate

charging during driver breaks. It can currently charge from 20% to 80% in under an hour. The truck can be prepared for megawatt charging – when this is available, charging time will drop to 30 minutes. The most notable new feature of the eActros is the redesigned ProCabin cab. The new look helps to improve aerodynamics – alongside a redesigned bumper, access steps, doors and air deflectors on the A-pillars. This contributes to a drag coefficient improvement of 9% over the diesel Actros model. To offer a realistic alternative to diesel-powered trucks, the eActros 600 can travel up to 1.2 million kilometres over 10 years of operation. After this time, battery health should still be more than 80% – and approximately 95% of the installed capacity can be used with LFP technology. This makes a higher range possible with the same installed battery capacity. Mercedes-Benz Trucks has developed two power take-offs, offering a power range between 22kW and 90kW. An electric-mechanical power
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT
take-off makes it possible to operate hydraulic or mechanical equipment such as tipping, sliding-floor or silo semi-trailers. The electric DC or AC power take-off is suitable for applications such as refrigerated bodies and semi-trailers. The eActros 600 4x2 tractors and multi-axle rigids go on sale this year and series production is expected to begin at the end of 2024. It has a GCW of up to 44 tonnes – so, with a standard trailer configuration, payload should be about 22 tonnes in the EU. Karin Rådström, CEO of MercedesBenz Trucks, says: “The eActros 600 stands for the transformation of road freight transport towards CO2-neutrality like no other truck with a three-pointed star. It is characterised by highly innovative drive technology that can offer our customers particularly high energy efficiency and thus profitability. This makes entry into e-mobility even more attractive for fleet operators.”

It builds on the already popular Workshop Management software, which stores all vehicle maintenance information electronically. Sargeant says: “Vehicle inspections are now taking an average of 90 minutes instead of two hours. Buying Guide: TDi Software
Check mates Intuitive software solutions for tachograph analysis, daily vehicle checks and transport management ANALYSIS AND COMPLIANCE TDi Software has been providing expert tachograph analysis and transport compliance solutions for more than 30 years for both large and small clients in the haulage and logistics sectors. The company strives to remain at the forefront of innovation and has an in-house development team to bring customers new products and software features that help them stay on top of the ever-changing legislation on transport compliance. TDi’s core product offering makes managing fleets easier and more efficient than ever before with digital transport solutions. Its disc-check, vehicle-check and TransMaS packages help operators save time and money and increase productivity. Disc-check is a comprehensive tachograph analysis system. Simple and informative dashboards make data accessible at a glance and a
range of screens and reports help with compliance, driver and vehicle data in more detail. All reports can be scheduled to be automatically sent to an email address as and when required. Vehicle-check is TDi’s walk-around check app. Drivers can use the app to complete their walkaround checks, the results of which are then sent straight to the transport office. This means operators are immediately alerted to any issues and can plan to resolve them as soon as possible. All checklists are customisable, so entire fleets can be checked – including HGVs, PSVs, LGVs and more. Custom alerts can also be configured so operators are aware when certain events are logged – for example, when incident reports are uploaded or when defects are reported.
CONTROL AND VISIBILITY TransMaS is a transport management system that gives managers complete control and visibility of their orders from input to invoice. The platform integrates
with and provides real-time updates directly from the driver’s TransMaS app, helping transport operators to save time and money. Templates can be auto-filled for repeat orders, and driver rosters can automatically keep track of driver availability. TDi also offers a suite of apps available on iOS and Android for all three systems to help drivers while they are out on the road. The disc-check app supports drivers with working-time management. Vehicle-check can be used to log defects and incident reports and the TransMaS app gives drivers visibility over their day’s work. The TransMaS app can also be used to upload documents and ePODs. All of TDi’s software products are backed by an IT support team, so customers can reach out for training and support at any time. Mick Stirzaker, operations director at Browns Distribution, says: “We have been using TDi’s services since 2015. As a long-established distribution company with more than 50 HGV drivers, we have always had a robust method of checking our tachograph and working time information, but since we started using the services of TDi we have reached another level of improved results, which we are proud to share with the rest of the industry.”

Thinking big +ORTQXKPI RTQFWEVKXKV[ CPF GHƂEKGPE[ KU PQV C PGY KFGC DWV VJG OQVKXCVKQP VQ FQ UQ KU UVTQPIGT VJCP GXGT IN-HOUSE TESTING OPTIONS Many fleet operators are considering the costs of outsourcing their vehicle testing and recognising the value of bringing those activities in-house. As the UK’s leading provider of lifting and testing solutions for heavy-duty commercial workshops, Totalkare understands the benefits of in-house testing. With any fleet, the cost of routine brake testing adds up. Investing in an in-house brake tester eradicates those costs – and you might be surprised at how quickly you can break even and begin saving money. If you currently outsource brake testing, resources are unavailable for longer than necessary. The time spent driving to an external test centre is time the vehicle and driver could be on the road adding value to your business.
QUALITY WORKMANSHIP A by-product of saving time is that it will help improve quality. Testing in-house helps you to test in the way you need to, without retesting fees.
46
In addition, a Totalkare brake tester does not require two engineers to use. A tablet connects to the brake tester’s computer via Wi-Fi, meaning tests can be conducted by one person from the comfort of the driver’s cab. Cutting out those journeys to and from a test centre saves fuel and driver time. In addition, it reduces your carbon footprint as a result. Alongside efficient brake testing, operators can take it one step further and test the headlamp beam aim or emissions while the vehicle is in position. In just a couple of minutes, a recorded brake test can be conducted, the headlamp beam aim adjusted and an exhaust emissions check completed to ensure the vehicle is within the legal limits and in the best condition at all times.
MTS CONNECTIVITY The world is becoming an increasingly digital place. The DVSA states that MoT stations making new site applications or replacing older brake testers must purchase connected test equipment that can interface with the MoT Test System (MTS). Connected equipment dramatically reduces the likelihood of

data-entry errors and facilitates quicker testing. Increasing the variety of work undertaken in-house makes the company more attractive to job applicants during recruitment – ensuring you hire the best. Similarly, it can positively affect staff turnover and productivity in the workforce.
HOW MUCH COULD YOU SAVE? The time savings of in-house testing are instant. However, the financial aspect is key when weighing up a capital investment. That’s why the Totalkare website has a free brake test savings calculator. Alternatively, you can speak to our workshop equipment experts directly.

Buying Guide: Tructyre
Low-risk rubber Minimising risk by checking tyres carefully is C|OQPG[ UCXKPI GUUGPVKCN HQT VJG DGUV TWP ƃGGVU TYRE MANAGEMENT Getting upstream of potential problems is the essence of de-risking. It is about preparing for all the things that could possibly go wrong. Some things just happen – they can’t be predicted – but lots of things can be expected, especially with tyres. Tyres that are de-risked stand a much better chance of being removed before they can threaten a mission or compromise safety. De-risking saves the operator money by reducing the number of emergencies – one of the worst-case scenarios for any fleet manager. The important point is that not all emergencies are inevitable – some can be prevented. Tructyre’s tyre inspector can quickly spot and deal with a tyre that
is demonstrating significant wear, removing the threat and saving the mission. Like fuel, tyres are an expensive necessity. So catching the tyres at precisely the right time to apply a life-extending service ensures the optimum cost of tyre ownership and good asset management. Just operating tyres at the correct pressure can increase the potential mileage of the tyre and reduce drag – saving fuel and ensuring safety.
EXTRA MILES A well-timed, turn-on-rim relocating exercise or regrooving can deliver more mileage. Regrooving can release up to 25% additional tyre mileage – depending on the tyre. Relocating tyres around a vehicle (or other vehicles in the fleet)

48
A COMMERCIAL MOTOR SUPPLEMENT
can optimise the wear of the tyre across the vehicle or the fleet as a whole. De-risking does not remove the need for replacing tyres; it optimises the timing of the tyre purchase by safely extracting the maximum mileage. Many users of premium tyres deploy a retread programme because retreads can give great mileage and cost less than a new tyre without compromising safety. The careful management of the tyre fleet will ensure as many tyres as possible are available for the retread process by avoiding damage that renders a tyre scrap. This is important because the maximum financial benefits of retreading occur when the ratio of new tyres to retreaded tyres is at the optimum. A quick look at the tyres of many trucks or trailers highlights one of the more complex issues with tyre management – they need to be maintained and replaced separately because they wear at different rates. For example, on a triaxle trailer it is often the middle tyres that will wear to the limit before the front tyres and finally the rear tyres. So regular inspection is essential because each tyre on a typical vehicle will need different care and attention at different times. There is no secret to saving money by de-risking. The savings are there for the taking: reducing emergencies, getting all available wear from the tyre and balancing the mix of new and retread in the installed tyre fleet.

Data on demand Management software and smartphone apps VQ|MGGR|QRGTCVQTU QP VQR QH VJG NCVGUV TGIWNCVKQPU COMPLIANCE SOFTWARE TruTac, part of the Microlise Group, provides market-leading compliance expertise across logistics software, data and fleet management. Its software is designed for HGV, LCV and PSV fleets of all sizes and in all sectors. TruTac streamlines compliance and data management to save operators time and money. Using TruTac’s software and apps, Nijman Zeetank’s fleet of 50 articulated trucks and 100 trailers has benefited from a significant reduction in driver debrief administration time. Its drivers often spend extended periods in the field. Operations manager Steve Clarke explains that TruTac’s paperless system allows the firm to communicate with drivers on compliance issues before they return to the depot. Clarke says: “We used to have to wait for a driver to complete a trip before debriefing a tachograph issue
but now we can speak to the drivers and complete the debriefs quicker, which helps to prevent some of the minor issues reoccurring. “Our drivers have the TruControl app. They can see information about their hours and that helps us to reduce infringements. It is also presented in a way that’s engaging – it’s not just a sheet of numbers, it uses graphics – so they can see where they are up to, including daily, weekly, and fortnightly driving totals. As soon as the information is received from a tachograph download, we know it is accurate.”
ANALYSIS TOOLS Nijman Zeetank is a longstanding TruTac customer and has been using the TruAnalysis tachograph management system for 15 years. It has since added TruControl compliance management, TruChecks for daily walk-around vehicle inspections, TruLicence for driver licence verification and validity checks, TruFleet vehicle maintenance and

TruWorkshop to create bespoke report templates. TruTac’s fleet management and compliance software products are used by more than 5,700 operators. Its new software developments are customer-led based on feedback from operators. TruTac’s products are instrumental in supporting AS Miles Consulting clients in public inquiries with the traffic commissioner. Specialising in assisting operators with compliance and other complex aspects of road transport, AS Miles Consulting recommends TruTac software to its LCV, HGV and PSV clients. Managing director Andrew Miles says: “One of our clients is a plant hire and machinery specialist with seven vehicles. It had a bad public inquiry about 12 months ago, so we started it off with TruAnalysis. It went well, so we built it to include recording its maintenance requirements and planning with TruFleet, and the TruChecks walk-around app. “It has run them for about nine months now, and its follow-up visit with the DVSA lasted less than 30 minutes. The inspectors said no further action was needed, because of the level of visibility the software provides. Not only that, but it has also attained FORS Bronze.”

RTX revisited Summer trade show Road Transport Expo YKNN|DG|DCEM KP ,WPG EVENTS The organisers of Road Transport Expo (RTX) have announced it will be back in 2024 at NAEC Stoneleigh on 4-6 June. The popular summer trade show, which this year attracted more than 8,500 visitors, will once again bring its powerful ‘all about the truck’ ethos to the road transport sector. It will feature a vast exhibition of the latest vehicles, technology and services, alongside live product demonstrations, a ride and drive experience and a topical conference programme. Free to attend, RTX 2024 promises to recreate the lively, sociable atmosphere that past visitors have enjoyed, with exhibitors pulling out all
the stops to make their stands impactful and engaging. “We are delighted to bring RTX back to the industry in summer 2024,” says Vic Bunby, divisional director at RTX organiser and Commercial Motor publisher Road Transport Media. “Following two successful shows, RTX has firmly established itself as a must-attend event for anyone involved
with the business of running an HGV fleet. “We look forward to working with industry to make sure next year’s event continues to deliver exactly what you would like to see in a trade show.” Why not check out the highlights from the 2023 show at roadtransportexpo.co.uk, where you can also register to be kept in the loop for next year’s show news?
