Dashboards # Saddlebags The Destination Magazine and

T

We think we are on to something!

he Destination Magazine is living up to it’s name! It has been very gratifying seeing this one of a kind magazine do exactly what it was intended. We are letting people know about new destinations just down the road. So many people have picked up the magazine and said, “I want to go there” or “I never knew that was there” and the most overheard comment while delivering the magazine was “WE need to go here.” “WE need.” Each person that will see your ad in Dashboards and Saddlebags Magazine is most likely not going to come alone. They’ll bring their husband, wife, family, friends or group with them. When I go out and discover new destinations the experience is enriched when I can share the new discovery with someone. This area of the country is so unique. From Charlotte we can be to the shores of the Atlantic or the Peaks of the Smokies for lunch and still be home for dinner. Whitewater rapids and European Castles just up the road. World class cuisine or fried apple pies

just around the corner. So much out there to “discover.” Dashboards and Saddlebags wants to be your destination magazine, your guide. Not only in print but on the web too. DashboardsandSaddlebags.com is a multipurpose website designed for your desktop, tablet and smart phone. Check out the “Events” tab on the web and in two taps have directions to your destination on your smart phone. Look at the Destination Map for directions to places featured in the magazine. See photos of events that did not get published in the magazine and download them to share or print. If you like you can even carry every printed issue of the magazine right in your phone. Follow us on our new facebook page. We can keep you up to date with new events or destinations we find out about before they make it in the magazine. Thank you for choosing to carry Dashboards and Saddlebags with you as your monthly destination magazine. -Andy

1914 Harley-Davidson “A-MOTOR” Racer 1 914 marks the first year the HarleyD a v i d s o n Mo t o r Company officially entered the “racing game.” Limited quantities of racing machines were developed by William O tt away, who challenged the competition with fast machines and team organization. Venice, California hosted the test bed for Mr. Ottaways effort and by mid 1915 the media expounded on the performance of the “Wrecking Crew.” Ottaway developed improved valve timing, larger intake ports and carburetor. His engine technology was the foundation for a reliable F lead configuration. This factory special “A Motor” racer featured magneto ignition, pedal crash for starting and a rear

wheel clutch and riveted long distance fuel tank. It is believed to be the first of only a handful of machine’s built for HarleyDavidson’s racing team for the Dodge City, Kansas 300-mile road race. This models production nu m b e r s a r e unknown, however, to date only three exist. -WTT

History lives on in Rockford A destination that is living history W

ho says you can’t go back in time? When you make the turn into this little town of Rockford they will prove you can! Since 1890 The Rockford General Store has been the center of activity in the village of Rockford. The store sits on the banks of the Yadkin River just over the Surry county line. Creaky wooden floors, old fashioned candy jars, fried apple pie, hoop cheese, and bottled soft drinks are just a few old time items you will discover at the Rockford General Store. Rockford was once the county seat of Surry County. Surry once encompassed Forsyth, Stokes, Yadkin, Davie and Rowan counties. With that came a booming, bustling town. The county seat was moved to Dobson, NC in 1850. Village of Rockford, established in 1789 has a rich history and many of the historic buildings are still standing. Some are in the process of being restored, others either destroyed by fire or are wait-

ing for their new beginning. The Antebellum house (ca. 1848) situated at the crest of more than 6 rolling acres, is the Historic Rockford Inn Bed and Breakfast. It will provide you with the simple pleasures and charm of country living while enjoying modern conveniences. One of the most visited buildings is the Rockford Methodist Church circa 1916. A lot was obtained from Dr. Daniel Holcomb and men from the community donated logs, lumber, and labor. The women served lunches at the building site during construction. The Women’s Society purchased the pews from the old Centenary Methodist Church on Liberty Street in Winston-Salem. In 1967, the Rockford Methodist Church was closed by the Methodist Conference. In 1989 the fresco “Come

Dashboards and Saddlebags The Destination Magazine

Unto Me” was finished by artist Tony Griffin. Today the church is always open for your to come in and tour. Railroad Section Foremans House circa 1883 is the 1st building on your right as you cross the tracks into town. When the railroad was being built the section of track from Winston-Salem to Wilkesboro the foreman for the railroad and his family stayed here. Today Yadkin River Adventures is located in the left hand side of this building, the right hand side is a private residence. For the sixth year, the sound of battle cries will ring out across Rockford during the Civil War Battle and Living History event. AYadkinDestination and a Corkscrew River Wine Trail L

ess than an hour from Charlotte you will find yourself in the middle of one of the fastest growing wine regions in the country. By the time the 100th winery in North Carolina had celebrated it’s official opening, eight more wineries were open to the public. The Yadkin River Trail is in the heart of North Carolina’s first federally recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA). Tasting rooms on this trail are as diverse as the wines you will sample while on your trek through the heart of the Yadkin River Basin. Saunders Ridge is a grand airy log cabin built on land that has been farmed by Shore family for over 163 years. A cove re d p orch , an open deck and a gazebo by the lake provide comfortable seating to gaze into the woods while enjoying your bottle of wine and/or your meal from The Big Woods restaurant. Saunders Ridge is also a Organic Farm so you know the chef has some tasty ingredients to work with. RagApple Lassie Vineyards has been a dairy farm and tobacco farm tended to by the Hobsons for three generations. The name of the vineyard, RagApple Lassie comes from a prize winning Holstein raised by Frank Hobson Jr. While you are doing your tasting here it’s fun to pick up some Ashe County

cheese to nibble on as you sample the wine. Devine Llama Vineyards tasting room is a cozy log cabin with a wraparound porch lined with rocking chairs. Inside you’ ll find a Llama boutique. I’d venture to say it’s the only one in the Yadkin Valley! You may consider before your tasting taking a trek through the hilly countryside while a Llama carries your lunch and your wine selection. Reservations required. Cellar 4201 gives you the feeling that you are right in the wine cellar when you do your tasting. (Actually you are just upstairs from it.) The beautifully landscaped patio is the prominent feature of this vineyard. When you are sitting outside enjoying your purchase you’ll feel as if you are relaxing in the middle of a plush mountain resort. Flint Hill Vineyards showcases their wines in a 135 year old farmhouse. A porch in the front, a patio out back, or a big oak tree to sit under while enjoying your wine. C entury Kitchen shares the vintage home with the vineyard serving cuisine in the century old rooms of the old farmhouse. Each of these vineyards will be featured in The Yadkin River Wine Trail Festivals of 2011, a series of five

wine festivals showcasing the wines of the five Yadkin River Wine Trail vineyards. Each Festival will be held the First Sunday of June through October - from noon to 4pm. A $10.00 Tasting Ticket allows visitors (21 years or older) to sample wines from all five vineyards, enjoy great entertainment, and purchase local slow foods while spending a leisurely Sunday afternoon in wine country! The Museum That Runs W

heels Through Time is the best Motorcycle Museum in the Country. An awfully strong statement but when you visit Maggie Valley and see for yourself, I’m sure you will agree. From the motorcycles on display to the staff, or I should say family, behind the scenes it’s a great family destination. Bring a picnic lunch, sit by the creek and make a day of it. There is so much to see in this time capsule that each visit something new is found to admire.

26

VINTAGE MOTORCYCLES

The thrust of the museum is to educate future generations to a fascinating spectrum of Americana on vintage and antique motorcycles. From the early years 1900 – 1928, motorcycles emerged from a motor powered bicycle to a form of reliable sport and transportation. Through these years, commercial, police and military motorcycle sales were important also. The Wheels Through Time collection contains over 30 pre 16 models. All of which are in running order. Possibly the most interesting Pre 16 is Oscar Hedstroms (Indian Founder) unique prototype. The Wheels Through Time Museum is also known as the “Museum That Runs.” Most of these machines are driven regularly! American racing motorcycles and their history create a fascinating timeline. Sixty plus racing machines from 1909 to present, grace the museum. Many are “one offs” and low production models. This collection is complete with memorabilia from the “glory days” 1909

sics of the 30’s, such as Packard, Lincoln, and Cadillac are well represented here at the museum. It must be noted, like the motorcycle collection, these automobiles are used regularly. Early teen cars include the Locomobile and Cadillac, which were the top of the line during their time. More modern cars consist of a sheik 1954 Eldorado convertible and a 1962 Corvette Roadster. Always expect new surprises in the display. – 1929 through its early Class C racing roots. Hillclimbing motorcycles are given special attention. A unique display has been created for this extraordinary collection of 20 factory-produced specials. Pre-war models from 1929 – 1939 bridge the gap from old technology to modern technology. Harley-Davidson Knucklehead is truly the grandfather of the modern motorcycles. A collection of these models makes an extraordinary exhibit in the museum.

ONE OF A KIND SPECIALS

This collection takes the love affair between man and machinery to a new level… the “one off ” special. Some were created by the racing department of large manufacturers, others, the creative genius of one man. The Wheels Through Time Museum will be glorifying these machines in a new special exhibit “Men & their Machines.” Fifteen totally unique machines will be displayed. Volumes of informative materials will enlighten future generations of mans motorized DECADE COLLECTION accomplishment. This educational The Wheels Through Time “De- exhibit spans 100 years of our procade Collection” is an interesting vocative motorized past. cross section of important American automobiles in a timeline Wheels Through Time Museum spanning nearly 100 years. Where Gear Heads Meet... L

ocated in western Nor t h C aroli na’s great cruising country is a new place for car lovers and motorcycle enthusiasts. It’s called, appropriately, the GEAR HEAD INN, and new owners are Jim and Mary. Nestled in the Great Smokies, it’s close to Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherohala Skyway, Tail of the Dragon, and many more of NC’s scenic byways. This all started with a small vacation trip to celebrate a birthday. Jim and Mary were cruising the Blue Ridge and checking out all the beautiful old muscle cars and Harleys. It was fall and they talked about living in this beautiful place. Before the day was over they came up with the idea of purchasing an old motor inn near the Blue Ridge and making it “THE GEAR HEAD INN” (both being gear heads). Three trips to North Carolina later, they made an offer on an old motor inn, built in 1968, and proceeded to restore it to its 1968 flavor with a Gear Head theme. Each room is named after an American motorcycle or an American muscle car from the 1964 to 1973 decade. Mary says “Finding vintage items to decorate each room has been both fun and challenging, and is an ongoing project for continual improvement. We are always looking for ideas and new sources for stuff.” A fire-pit was one of the first things they added. Who doesn’t like to sit around a big campfire at night and share stories or get to know new people? Especially

28

when most every American loves cars. When talking about muscle cars and/or motorcycles, Jim says “People from all walks of life have one, had one, or want one...and they love to talk about it. I know because I’m one of them.” They have added a lobby to the inn with an “American Pride” wall, where guests can gather at any time. Coffee in the morning is a popular time there. Mary loves to take pictures of visiting classic cars and “cool” motorcycles, and keep them in the lobby to share with other gear heads. Jim has built custom benches outside each room. Many of these benches have names and dates of guests carved or written on them. They are the gear heads who say they’ll be back. So the next time you feel the need to “get away” for a day or a week, check out the GEAR HEAD INN. Call 828-488-2398 for reservations or email reservations@gearheadinn.com.
