The orchard, owned by the Prewitt family for more than a half century, has been a popular stop on the u-pick-em circuit in Western North Carolina since the late 1980’s. Each year from late August through Christmas Eve folks know to visit the bucolic Burke County orchard for freshly-grown apples, tasty ciders, and apple-flavored treats baked on site. Owners Gayle and Harley Prewitt consider the business a labor of love, and are always excited to see customers’ faces light up when they find just the right variety of apple. “We listen to what people are asking for and have added a few varieties over the years,” Gayle Prewitt says. “But with some of the varieties, we don’t ever seem to be able to grow enough.” Fifteen types of apples grace the

Charlotte: Brews In The Queen City E
ven for a fast-paced place like Charlotte, the surge in craft brewing warrants a double take. Within the past 18 months, four new breweries have taken the city from underserved to brimming. The historic NoDa neighborhood, an old textile center reborn as a vibrant arts district, is riding the crest of this craft beer wave. Three of the new breweries have opened on a short stretch of North Davidson Street, and their arrival further solidifies NoDa’s standing as a lively community that duly impressed the stars of The Hunger Games when they filmed in Charlotte in 2011. On NoDa’s lower edge near the neo-landmark Amelie’s French Bakery, food trucks take up station near Birdsong and NoDa Brewing, where new releases and spirited performances keep the breweries’ atmospheres fresh. From here, Feast Food Tours’ Brew & Chew trolley pedals on up to Heist Brewery’s neighborhood, where Growlers Pourhouse and Revolution Pizza & Ale House add dimension to the beer scene. Historic South End commands attention on the other side of the urban center. A concentration of restaurants/pubs – including Mac’s Speed Shop, The Liberty and Common Market and Duckworth’s Grill & Taphouse – rallies beer troops in this high-energy neighborhood with light rail service. Charlotte’s fourth new brewery, Triple C, adds small batch brews to the South End spectrum. Visit the neighborhood on the first Friday night of the month for the gallery crawl and any Friday for a parade of food trucks. Nearby, The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery with its

Event to Benefit Davidson’s IGNITE Community Center for Young Adults with High-Functioning Autism or Asperger’s Syndrome
T
his fall hundreds of classic, cool and celebrity cars will roll into Ingersoll Rand’s Davidson campus on Saturday, November 30, 2013 for the inaugural AmeriCarna LIVE car show presented by Ingersoll Rand and MSC Industrial Supply Company. “Americarna LIVE is the celebration of car culture and what better place to host it than in the town of Davidson, N.C., which personifies the classic American community,” said Ray Evernham, an avid car collector and long-time Lake Norman-area resident. “With support from our Davidsonbased corporate partners Ingersoll Rand and MSC Industrial Supply Company, Americarna LIVE will serve as a great holiday activity for the whole family and also raise awareness and funding for IGNITE.” At AmeriCarna LIVE, auto enthusiasts will have the opportunity to display their cars along side the unique rides that belong to the NASCAR community’s top stars while the Velocity Channel films for an upcoming episode of AmeriCarna LIVE. The AmeriCarna LIVE car show will benefit IGNITE, a new community center in Davidson for young adults with high functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger’s Syndrome (AS). IGNITE offers activities, skills training, and educational workshops that will foster social, financial, educational, and employment independence for its members. But most importantly, IGNITE offers a social environment where members can connect with others and experience a sense of community. Ingersoll Rand Campus 800 Beaty St.Davidson, NC To register your car and check out more details on the show, visit www.AmericarnaTV.com/LIVE. king-size porch remains a high point on the beer itinerary with German styles toasting local heritage – the city and county are named for Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Beer mixes well with other aspects of a Queen City visit. A shopper’s paradise, Charlotte has a wealth of bottle shops, including Brawleys, Good Bottle Co. and Salud, located in the innovative/entrepreneurial 7th Street Public Market. At the NC Music Factory complex, VBGB Beer Hall and Garden boasts 30 taps with a selection of local brews. The U.S. National Whitewater Center, a first-rate outdoor adventure land, features craft beer at the River’s Edge Bar & Grill. Head to Lake Norman with a stop in Cornelius, home of Ass Clown Brewing and its inspired line of beers. Why the Dismal Swamp is misnamed T
he Great Dismal Swamp sounds downright…dismal. But what the name hides is one of the great natural areas left in the eastern United States and an area filled with history, mystery and adventure. The 22-mile Dismal Swamp Canal, completed in 1805, runs north/south through the eastern edge of the swamp and is the oldest man-made waterway having sustained continuous operations. Today, it is an alternate route on the Intracoastal Waterway used by boaters going between Chesapeake Bay and the Albemarle Sound. Despite its impressive size and age, the Great Dismal Swamp remains a mystery to most people, but at one point it drew George Washington, Robert Frost and many other notables to it. The swamp also played an integral part in the cultural history of the region with its dense forests providing refuge to runaway slaves. As a result, the Great Dismal Swamp was the first National Wildlife Refuge to be officially designated as a link in the Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. The Dismal Swamp Welcome Center in Camden is the only visitor center in the continental U.S. greeting visitors by both a major highway and an historic waterway. The center offers information on the history and mystery of the swamp as well as walking, hiking and biking Project 543 tells the story of trails. A
lthough Charlotte is certainly a shining star of the New South, there’s still some down-home to be found. That’s certainly the case at Price’s Chicken Coop, where you’ll see a posted notice discouraging the use of cell phones and two-way radios while ordering. This South End hot spot, which is strictly takeout, is consistently voted by natives as serving the best fried chicken and soul food in Charlotte. For nearly 40 years, Price’s has been offering up mouth-watering fare. On any day, you’ll find several lines of folks and a motor pool of cars waiting. The place was certainly a hit with the Farrelly brothers during the production of Shallow Hal Filming came to a screeching halt for almost an hour one day as crew members munched Price’s fried chicken at Freedom Park.
