The History of Scottish Games

M

odern Scottish Festivals have their roots in the middle ages. We have reports of athletic competition (“Games”) at many times and places when people gathered together; fairs, military musters (“wapenschaws”), even funerals! Games which now feature track and field events, music, and dance have been held in the village of Ceres (in Fife) since shortly after the battle of Bannockburn in 1314.

Scottish Games as we know them today began to develop in 1781 when the Highland Society of Falkirk sponsored prize money and trophies for competitions in dancing, piping, and athletics during the town’s Fall Fair. In 1818 a Games was presented in St. Fillan’s with piping, athletics, and dancing (including the Sword Dance for the first time). Within a few years Gatherings were being held at many towns throughout Scotland. Many of these Gatherings are still being held today. The increasing popularity of these events eventually led to attempts to standardize the rules of competition and judging. Sanctioning bodies were formed to develop uniform rules and maintain records, Highland dancing, piping, and drumming teachers and judges stand for regular examinations to maintain their certification. With renewed interest in Scottish harp and fiddle their sanctioning organizations are seeing new growth. As Scots immigrated to far-flung lands they took their sport and

Babe Ruth Home Run Centennial Celebration

FA UAP PAREHHA B A OAA A HHFARAN MA NA D 7-8, 2014

T

h i s y e a r m a r k s t h e 10 0 t h anniversary of George Herman Ruth’s first home run, which he hit during Spring Training at the fairgrounds back in 1914.

George Herman “Babe” Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1895. He was raised in an orphanage because his parents couldn’t control him. In 1914 he signed a baseball contract with the Baltimore Orioles. In those days the Orioles were a minor league team in the International League. In March 1914 the team held spring training in Fayetteville. Ruth was in Fayetteville for only about a month, but he always remembered it. It was the first time he had ever been out of Baltimore. Ruth later wrote about how much fun he had riding the elevators in his hotel. According to one legend, the young and inexperienced Ruth didn’t know what to do on his own in Fayetteville, and so he followed around the team’s manager and owner, Jack Dunn. One of the team members said, “There goes Dunn’s new babe,” and the name stuck.

Vintage Baseball Game Free Event March 8 at 11:00am

Catch Fayetteville Baseball Fever by attending two Vintage Base Ball games at Arnette Park. Vintage Base Ball is baseball played by the rules and customs of the 19th century. These games will follow the 1864 rules as adopted by the National Association of Base-ball Players, which are similar to today’s modern game. However, players will be dressed in the traditional uniforms of the past, and play barehanded using balls and bats meeting the 1864 requirements. No gloves here folks! For more information about Vintage Base Ball visit the Vintage Base Ball Association’s website at http:⁄⁄vbba.org⁄. Arnette Park is located at 2165 Wilmington Hwy, Fayetteville, NC 28306.

22

In the 1920s and 1930s, when he was the most famous baseball player in the world, Ruth frequently visited North Carolina in the off-season to hunt and play golf. And he always remembered his early days in Fayetteville when he was on t he ro ad to becoming a legend.

Robbinsville is civilization, in contrast to Nell’s wild, untamed wilderness countr y. It i s a l s o home to t he goo d doctor Jerr y Lovell (Liam Neeson), who h a s Nell’s be st intere st at heart, unlike the cold, hard city of Ch a rlotte w it h it s un iver sit ie s a nd ne w s me d i a a nd p s ychologist Paula Olsen (Natasha Richardson).

But Nell wasn’t the first time the movies came calling. The silent fe at ure St a rk L ove shot e xclusively in the area. It was written, produced, and directed by Karl Brown, a protege of D. W. Griffith. Brow n insisted on authenticity, using loc al, unt rained “actors” (at $25 a week!) a nd shoot i ng w it hout m akeup. Th i s re al i sm separated St ark Love from t he usual silent-film melodrama and is one of the reasons it is held in high esteem by film historians of the pre-talkie era.

Of course, film junkies are more l i kely to rememb er Nel l which Foster produced as well as star red in, and for which she garnered a Best Actress nomination. A good st arting point for a tou r of R obbi n s v i l le’s M a i n St re et i s Snyder ’s Dep a r t ment S t or e , w h e r e Je r r y a n d Pa u l a take Nell on her tr ip into tow n to acclim ate her to societ y. In this memorable scene, Nell get s a litt le c ar r ied away w it h her shopping spree. Snyder’s, a Robbi n s v i l le f i xt ure for ye a r s, carries a little bit of ever ything, - t h e fo l k s h e r e a r e h a p p y t o discuss t heir br ush w it h fame. Of course, Nell escapes the little tr ip and ends up dow n at t he Blue Be acon Pool & Paw n, where t he coarser side of an exploitive society is on display.
