orking so close to the Dan River on daily basis I often take in the scenic beauty of this river for granted. When the coal ash spill in Eden happened I did not hear about it until 2 days after it occurred. After hearing the news, I started getting phone calls from New York to California asking if I heard about the spill on the TV, are you guys going to be all right? I didn’t realize just how big of a scope this was. We had people calling from all around the United States quoting the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and The Chicago Tribune about this spill. None of the publications or news stories would pinpoint where the spill occurred. The tragedy happened Downstream from Stokes County! The Dan River is an uncommon river, it is one of the few rivers that actually travels at certain points from the south to the north. Therefore looking

at a map you can get very confused which direction the river is going. The Dan River starts in the meadows of Dan which is in Virginia right by the Blue Ridge Parkway. Then it flows down into North Carolina through Stokes County and then begins its track North again to Rockingham County, to Caswell County, and it goes back into Virginia through South Boston and Danville and eventually meets up with the Stanton and the Roanoke at Kerr Reservoir Lake. This forms the Roanoke River. Stokes County was not directly affected from the ash. But we are Continued On Page 17

The Claw Of The Dragon I

t would be a challenge for motorcycle riders to find a more beautiful driving trail than the scenic back roads of Southwest Virginia. Looping through the Blue Ridge Mountain range, The Claw of the Dragon is becoming one of the most popular destinations in the South for motorcycle enthusiasts.

With the charming town of Wytheville, Virginia, as the trail’s center or hub, the trail features loops totaling over 350 miles as it ventures over to the community of Marion to the west and Galax to the east. The drive meanders through parts of seven Virginia counties but is easily accessible from Interstates 77 or 81 as a starting part. Along the way, riders have the opportunity to stop at many interesting and authentic attractions. After a heart-stopping trip on the ride that follows Virginia Route 16, the two-lane ribbon over three mountains between Tazewell and Marion called Back of the Dragon, don’t miss some of the unique attractions nearby. Harkening back to the grand movie palaces of yesteryear, The Lincoln Theatre is the home of the nationally syndicated bluegrass music television series, “Song of the Mountains.” This beautiful facility is one of only three remaining Mayan Revival theaters in America. The General Francis Marion Hotel is a favorite of riders with its restaurant called The Black Rooster and a bar with 27 beer taps. Nearby, Virginia Sweetwater Distillery and Appalachian Mountain Spirits offer a unique taste of local flavor. Wolf’s Barbeque is also a hometown favorite with several other restaurants also available. Other interesting attractions include Hungry Mother State Park, and the Museum of the Middle Appalachians. Next, continue on to the Wytheville area. Riders will enjoy a challenging ride up Big Walker Mountain. As the 16-mile scenic byway makes it way to the top, Continued On Page 23

Dragon Continued From Page 21 the rider is immersed in breathtaking flora and fauna of each season. At the top, take a rest at Big Walker Lookout, climb the 100 foot tower, and enjoy a snack in the country store. A variety of other local attractions such as Beagle Ridge Herb Farm, West Wind Winery, and Fort Chiswell Animal Park, offer the opportunity to enjoy s ome d i st i nct ive “homeg row n” experiences. Wytheville’s downtown historic district allows visitors to leisurely walk the streets and discover the history that has made this a town of hospitality for over 200 hundred years. Interesting shopping, museums, and the historic flavor of the 1776 Log House Restaurant are just a few of the must-see stops along the way. An evening of music can be enjoyed at the Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre or one of several music venues nearby. Wytheville has a variety of lodging accommodations from all-suite hotels to bed & breakfasts and cabins. A historic boutique hotel will open soon in the downtown district. The newest anchor community for The Claw of the Dragon is Galax. This Virginia city is steeped in the history of music. The Galax Old Fiddler’s Convention held the second week of August each year has earned the community the distinction of the “World Capital of Old Time Mountain Music.” The words “Galax” and “barbecue” are synonymous, so much so that the annual Smoke on the Mountain, Virginia State Barbecue Championship is held in downtown Galax each July. This is but a sampling of all the interesting things you can see and do as you ride The Claw of the Dragon and explore the interesting communities along the way. A Poole of Pickers

C

arved from the very foundations of the southern textile industry, country music was formed by the early twentieth century genius that was Charlie Poole, a textile mill worker and banjoist in Spray, North Carolina (now Eden). Poole and his band, the North Carolina Ramblers traveled in 1925 from Spray to New York to make their first recording for Columbia Records, a hit that went on to revolutionize American music history. In 1995, members of the Eden Preservation Society realized the need to recognize this special heritage, and decided to do so in the form of a music festival in Poole’s honor.

Through the years, this event has featured many of the legends in Americana music – Mike Seeger, Norman & Nancy Blake, Tony Rice, J.D. Crowe, the Osborne Brothers, Alice Gerrard, Tony Trischka, and Bryan Bowers – as well as some of the brightest stars of today – The Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Wiyos, and Uncle Earl – all in honor of a true icon in American music – Charlie Poole. This year we are proud to welcome David Holt, Grammy-winning master musician and storyteller, who will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award. n the northern part the North Carolina Piedmont, there’s a place called Ridgeway where the soil and climate combine to create the perfect environment for growing cantaloupes. The Ridgeway cantaloupe has been called one of the most exquisite tastes ever to come out of North Carolina and was served in the nation’s finest restaurants. It was in such popular demand that in 1932, 13,000 crates of “Pride of Ridgeway” cantaloupes were shipped out of the little town. Beer Festival Celebrates NC-Sourced Ingredients T

hink local, drink local. That’s the motto for the State of Origin Beer Fest, which debuts Saturday, June 14, on the courthouse square in downtown Morganton.

The festival requires all 20 participating breweries to be North Carolina based, and each has to use North Carolina-sourced ingredients at some point in the brewing process. The idea for the event came from brothers David and Mark Bennett, who recently teamed with brewer Todd Boera to open Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton. “We not only want people drinking local beers from a local brewery, but drilling down to the next level with local ingredients in the beer,” says David Bennett. “This is something we believe in.” Mipso, a progressive bluegrass band from Chapel Hill, brings instant notoriety to the event. The band’s recent album, Dark Holler Pop, climbed as high as No. 8 on the bluegrass charts. Continued On Page 33

Festival From Page 30 “It’s a really cool headlining act and follows the festival concept because they’re local,” Bennett says. “All three band members are from North Carolina.” The list of participating breweries is cool, too. It covers most of the state and ranges from small craft breweries to regional craft powerhouses, all of which use NC ingredients in some beers. Breweries scheduled to attend include: Appalachian Mountain Brewery in Boone, Birdsong Brewery in Charlotte, Foothills Brewing in Winston-Salem, Fullsteam Brewery in Durham, Haw River Farmhouse Ales in Saxapahaw, Highland Brewing Co. in Asheville, NoDa Brewing Co. in Charlotte, Pisgah Brewing Co. in Black Mountain, and Triple C Brewing Co. in Charlotte. Meanwhile, host brewery Fonta Flora will offer beers from such locally-sourced products as dandelions, grits, and fresh kiwis grown in Ashe County. Craig Distl

The Best Crap In The South T

he Depot is a tourist destination for “Pickers” of antique furniture, household items and mementos from the past. Folks drive in from across the region, and from as far away as New York and Florida, to explore the Depot’s huge 88,000 square feet sales floor.

The Depot has quickly become the largest and most popular antique mall in the Southeastern United States. Gibson Mill had buzzed with activity for decades, becoming a place of employment for generations of proud families in the Cabarrus County area. For 100 years, the historic plant produced fine American-made bedding until the shifting global economy changed the way business was conducted. Manufacturing went overseas to China and India, and the once proud plant was shuttered. But now, Gibson Mill is alive and buzzing with activity. Antiques in the Yard Sale takes place the second Saturday of each month until the winter months. This is hosted by our Depot vendors and takes place in our parking lot starting at 8am, ending at noon. The Depot also opens at 9am on the sale day. This sale has some of the best antiques around....not your average yard sale! TJ’s Diner has been a success since their doors opened in 2011. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, TJ’s foods have become a favorite. The restaurant has also become a destination for local businesspeople and neighbors who crave made to order, homemade food. Around the back of the mill is AutoBarn Classic Cars and Collector Car Storage & Sales. The AutoBarn was started by a couple of Charlotte, NC car collectors who share the same passion as you. Whether you’re buying a car, selling a car, or need a project car, we handle all The Depot At Gibson Mill the paperwork, phone calls, emails, 325 McGill Ave., NW, and negotiations regarding your Concord, NC 28026 deal.
