ousting is given a 21st Century roar of approval at the Carolina Renaissance Festival. Jousting is now, as it was 500 years ago, a merrie sport; a make-believe pageant of Sir Galahads and Sir Lancelots, of villainous Black Knights versus the virtuous Red Knights, mounted on thundering steeds, plumes waving, chain mail clanking and the festival crowd sarcastically screaming “Cheat to win!” On Fall weekends in the Carolina piedmont, Knights will again strap on the heavy suits of armor, settle astride snorting chargers, take up their lances and tilt with each other. These Knights are regular performers at more than a dozen “Renaissance Villages” around the country and will be battling at the Carolina Renaissance Festival on a large tournament field within the Festival just north of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Fonta Flora Brewery Celebrates One Year Nov. 8

I

t seems only yesterday when I heard about a North Carolina Brewery crafting a wonderfully unique North Carolina/Appalachian style of beer. By utilizing local grains provided by Riverbend Malt House and foraging the countryside for wild flora, we are taking brewing back to its agricultural roots. Fonta Flora partners David Bennett, Brewmaster Todd Boera, and Mark Bennett created a tasting room that functions as a community meeting place, much like a traditional pub. Every time we stop in to see what new creations are on tap we always leave having made a few new friends.

Fonta Flora crafts beer from beets, figs, carrots, oysters, ramps, dandelions, sunflowers, rye grass, alfalfa, clover, and a wagon full other “foraged” ingredients. Todd takes farm to table to a whole new level! Don’t think that these are novelty beers, quite the contrary. Each is work of living art. In fact Fonta Flora, just brought home a Gold Medal from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver for their Classic Irish-Style Dry Stout Irish Table. For me, the candle on the cake for this celebration is that the last 5 gallons of my favorite beer will be released on this day... Urban Monk. An imperial stout made with oak spirals that were used in the barrel ageing of the award winning single malt Defiant Whisky distilled just down the road. See you on November 8th!

Film Junkies Guide to North Carolina Lake James State Park Lake James State Park The park is located on N.C 126 in Burke and McDowell counties near Morganton and Marion. For information, call (828) 584-7728.

T

he list of film credits for Lake James State Park, located in the foothills near Morganton, is short but A-list all the way. Film junkies can explore the more than 150 miles of shoreline and visit the location of Fort William Henry, the centerpiece setting for The Last of the Mohicans. Though little remains of the set today, the beauty of the area is just as it was in the film. Numerous devotees of the movie still seek out the foundation markings. Besides being the British stronghold of Colonel Munro (Maurice Roe’ves), this site was also the location of the French camp. Other memorable scenes filmed here include the canoe escape led by Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) and the sequence when Duncan (Steven Waddington) falls during the Massacre Valley scene. All of the Mohicans locations are near the Haney’s Island/ White Creek area of the park. If you’re lucky, members of the park staff will guide you to the spots used in the film. Lake James also appears in the Sean Connery/Alec Baldwin thriller The Hunt for Red October, though just barely. It seems the executive producer was unhappy with the film’s ending, and a location was needed for quick reshoots. Lake James had the right look, so a two-day shoot was done here between Christmas and New Year’s Day. The lake may have been a goodluck charm for the sound crews of

24

both films. Red October picked up an Oscar® for Best Sound Effects, while Mohicans won for Best Sound.
