Datsun GOes on the prowl at a price of 3.12 lakh

March 19, 2014 became a red letter day for Datsun. Datsun is the second brand from Nissan Motors for India. The first Datsun car, the Datsun GO, was sold to customers in India in the 21stcentury. The first customer was Jaspal Singh, a Sikh gentleman. In fact, the occasion was as momentous as the one witnessed when the first Maruti 800 was first launched in India almost three decades back and delivered to a Harpal Singh, a Sikh gentleman residing in New Delhi. The second customer of the Datsun GO was Meenakshi Srinivasan. The car comes in three variants and four different colours. The Datsun Go was officially launched at a price of 3,12,270 for the D variant, 6 / APRIL 2014

3,46,482 for the A variant and the T variant for 3,69,999. The cars come with two years unlimited km manufacturers’ warranty. In the 3 to 4 lakh bracket, the Datsun GO competes with the likes of the super selling Maruti Alto, to some extent with the Maruti 800, Maruti A Star, the Ford Figo, the Chevrolet Beat, the Chevy Spark, the Hyundai i10 and the Santro Xing, The maximum power generated from the 1198cc three cylinder petrol engine of the Datsun GO is 67bhp@5000 rpm and a torque of 104Nm@4000 rom. It sprints to 100kmph in 13.3 seconds. The car gives 20.63km to a litre of petrol. The first 21st century Datsun customers will be taking to the

roads in their new Datsun GO exactly one hundred years from the launch of the first ever DAT car, in Japan. The keys to the new Datsun’s were handed over to customers in the Delhi, Chennai and Kolkata. The Datsun GO will be offered through a network of more than 125 Nissan/Datsun dealer outlets across the country. Nissan Motor Private India Limited will distribute Datsun vehicles in India as the company distribution tie up with Hover was terminated a few months back. Following the launch in India, new Datsun models will be introduced in Indonesia, Russia and South Africa later this year. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

rucks in India are usually confined to the dowdy domain of uncouth drivers, overcrowded vehicles, obsolete machinery and boring commercial activities. Overnight the perception has changed, at least a wee bit in India. Trucks can be glamorous, trucks can

have great sex appeal and trucks can be raced too. Stuart Oliver and all the other British truck drivers who participated in the debut T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship proved that point quite clearly. The Team Championship was awarded on the basis of the combined scores of the two drivers of the respective teams from both the races. All the 12 Tata Prima trucks were Indian but were heavilymodified beasts capable of putting out 370hp and reaching

a top speed of 110 kmph driven by experienced international drivers. The Prima race truck was the Prima 4038.S model. Stuart Oliver, T1 Prima Truck Racing Champion 2014 said “It was an amazing experience. The track is beautiful and trucks were performing great. Wabco was the official braking technology partner and JK Tyre was the official tyre partner for the entire event. Conducted under the aegis of FIA and FMSCI, the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship featured Tata Prima trucks, built specifically for the purpose. India’s first truck racing championship was organised by Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC), with safety and performance standards as per the guidelines of the British Truck Racing Association (BTRA). According to officials, this event was planned one and a half years earlier and was scheduled to be held in March 2013. But due to the downturn of the market the idea was postponed and later decided to 18 / APRIL 2014

be held in March 2014. The organisers are planning to host the event annually or once in two years. This has not been decided as yet. There is a possibility of Indian drivers to be featured on the grid in the future. Former FMSCI official Vicky Chandok stated that he would like to get fleet owners to nominate their own drivers for the race so as to build popularity and a possible motivation for truck drivers around the country. This will help improve and gain

respect for the truck driver’s community. For the event JK Tyre had specially made the trucks radial 315/80R22.5 semi slick tyres. The length of the track was also shortened for the race to 2.1 kms.

*Steve Horne, competition number 00, was the wild card entry and the 13th driver for the T1 Prima Truck Racing Championship – 5-lap Sprint Race on March 23. Steve qualified in 4th position in the qualifying session held the previous day.

Truck racing started in the 1970s Truck racing isn’t something new to the world. As a sport it all started in 1979 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in the United States of America with unmodified trucks as they were simpler times back then when no one really cared about safety. As the years progressed, so did the sport with a little help from the movie ‘Smokey and the Bandit II’, the one with Burt Reynolds driving around in the black and gold 1980 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. All this got sanctioned by the American Truck Racing Association. It was bought over in 1982 and called the Great American Truck Racing series that involved trucks that were normal road going trucks with tandem rear axles which reached 240kmph with normal used street tyres. Then in 1986, it was again sold off to a powerful motor racing fanatic Glenn Donnelly, MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

after which the trucks started being heavily modified and stripping down to lose weight, dropping the twin rear axle and this diet helped the trucks to lose about a ton more. All this made the trucks pick up pace. And it spread like an epidemic through the east coast. The truck racing fever then crossed the Atlantic to Britain and was under the care of the FIA. The FIA European Truck Racing Championship was introduced in 1985. With manufactures like Mercedes, Renault, Volvo, Scania and Volkswagen, all gradually entering the sport, the FIA came up with certain regulations to ensure the layouts and the styles of the trucks were original. The FIA also started regulating safety standards which the currently competing 30 teams still abide by. Maximum speed was

limited to 160kmph and a minimum weight of 5500 kilograms all scrutinised before the races by the FIA. These trucks also look exactly the same as they would come out of the regular production line without aero changes so as to ensure that most of the components of the truck are same. But the best part about the races is that minor collisions are allowed unlike other motorsport series’ around the globe. And one can compete in 2 categories to ensure equal playing ground for lesser sophisticated trucks. Not only was this sport popular in Europe and North America later around 1996 it moved to Brazil where the Formula Truck series was launched. Now with Tatas racing their trucks successfully in India, one could see Ashok Leylands, AMWs and Eichers getting into the race mode! APRIL 2014 / 19

Women have been integral to the FORD Mustang story Ask a male chauvinist Indian about women drivers, and a majority says women are the worst drivers in the world. But according to a press statement from Ford, as customers, designers, race car drivers, engineers, marketers and journalists, women have been an integral part of the Ford Mustang story for 50 years. Yes, the same Ford Mustang any Indian male would love to drive, even if it’s for a fleeting moment! Mustang has built a dedicated audience thanks to its authenticity. From the first retail customer to a successful race car driver to a journalist with a lifelong love for the pony car, these aficionada are but a tiny sample of the millions of women around the world whose stories

have contributed to the iconic status of Ford Mustang. For 50 years, women have helped to establish the iconic status of Ford Mustang, and they will continue to be a part of the story for future generations, including with the all-new 2015 Mustang that goes on sale later this year, noted the release. In 1964, Gail Brown was a freshly graduated Chicago schoolteacher who made history when she became the first Mustang owner in America. She still owns the car today. What makes this example unique is that Wise bought her Mustang on April 15, two days before the car was set to go on sale. A mix-up at the dealer resulted in her making the very first retail purchase of a Mustang.

Wise recalls with a great deal of fondness those early days of Mustang ownership when she was a young teacher. “There was a middle school attached to our elementary, and the boys fawned over the Mustang,” she remembers. Mustang had its public debut at the World’s Fair in New York in 1964. A class field trip to that event was life changing for another woman who has played a key role in the Mustang story. Mary Jean Wesche, editor of the Mustang Times for Mustang Club of America, was a visitor to the World’s Fair and still remembers seeing the Mustang debut display for the first time. “I absolutely fell in love with the car, right then and there,” recalls Wesche, who had recently

Lyn St. James, Professional Race Driver begun working on cars with her father. She continues to work on cars today in her spare time at home in Florida. Wesche also served as managing editor of Mustang Monthly and then 5.0, before spending the last decade of her career as the editor for Mustang Times. She is constantly on the road, visiting shows and meeting with Mustang enthusiasts. “Everyone has a Mustang story, and they are all really neat,” says Wesche. “Mustang has been an integral part of my life. I met my husband because of the Mustang. I enjoy writing about them, I enjoy driving them, and I’ve always had a passion for the car.” “It is a big deal if you are at a car show and Mary Jean Wesche stops by to take a look at your Mustang,” said John Clor, Ford MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

Racing marketing manager. “It means your vehicle is something special.” Mustang’s competition history is ingrained in its performance DNA as the car achieved a class victory in the 1964 Tour de France Automobile soon after its debut. While racing continues to be male-dominated today, Lyn St. James is one of several prominent women competitors over the last 50 years who have been an important part of the Mustang story. After coming up through the Sports Car Club of America amateur ranks in the 1970s, St. James captured attention wielding Mustangs in the Trans Am and IMSA GT classes, posting numerous victories and top-10 finishes. In the 1985 race at Watkins Glen, St. James became the first woman to win an IMSA

GT race driving solo, a mark that still stands. She later went on to race in the Indianapolis 500 seven times, winning rookie of the year in 1992 and setting a closed-course world record of 225.722 mph in 1995. Since retiring from the top ranks of American racing, St. James has been an advocate, mentor and coach for women in all sports, particularly racing, and still competes in vintage racing today. “I’m a product of the muscle car era, and when I think about the muscle cars of the 1960s, like the Cutlass and the GTO, they aren’t around anymore,” said St. James. “Mustang has survived, flourishing with the same culture and heritage in the sense that it’s still a muscle car, but upgraded to today’s technology, and it’s still hot.” APRIL 2014 / 37

Hamilton, Rosberg do Mercedes proud at Malaysian F1 Report: Rahul Kapoor

I

t was celebration time in the Mercedes garage in Malaysia as both F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg of Mercedes AMG Petronas crossed the line to clinch the 1st and 2nd positions respectively in the Malaysian F1 race. Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull RacingRenault took the third place on the podium. For the duo it’s a first one-two finish for Mercedes since Juan Manuel Fangio and Piero Taruffi accomplished a similar feat at the 1955 Italian Grand Prix. The action packed 56 lap dry race at the Sepang circuit after a wet qualifying led to a competitive race on March 30, 2014 in Kuala Lumpur with Mercedes leading the pact. Alonso finished 4th and Nico Hulkenberg, the sole Force India race driver took the 5thplace, both putting out a massive fight till the end of the race. The Williams duo Massa and Bottas finished 7th and 8th

after Massa ignored team orders to let Bottas pass to chase down Jenson Button to fight for his 6th place. Danish rookie man Kevin Magnussen of McLarenMercedes who finished 9th took the first 5 second penalty of the season for causing a collision on the 2nd lap with Kimi Raikkonen and ruining his race only for him to finish 12th in the standings. Daniel Kvyat took the final points scoring position and Romian Grosjean finished 11 after a horrible weekend in the Lotus. Kamui Kobayashi and Marcus Ericsson both drove a commendable race for Caterham to finish 13th and 14th respectively leading Max Chilton in the Marussia to finish the driver’s standings of the race. Daniel Ricciardo was close to finishing 4th until a poor pit stop on lap 41, costing him valuable time and causing him to fall back to the back which only got worse with his front wing being damaged and having to be replaced and having a 10 second stop/go penalty for the unsafe release in the pit lane. This 42 / APRIL 2014

only worsens his chances in the championship after the pending judgment on his previous finish in Australia. Jules Bianchi and Maldonado eventually retired from the race with damages caused by their collision on the first lap on turn 4. Jean Eric Vergne, Esteban Gutierez, and Adrian Sutil also retired from the race. Sergio Perez failed to start the race for Force India. Nico Rosberg now leads the Drivers Championship with 2 victories followed by Hamilton who is only trailed by Alonso by one point. Mercedes lead the constructors’ title over McLaren and Ferrari. With this race, Lewis has claimed his 23rd Formula One career victory and his second for Mercedes AMG Petronas at Sepang. Nico achieved his 13th Formula One career podium and his 11th for the team. “I’m incredibly happy today. This is my first win in Malaysia after eight attempts and to do it for our Petronas family in their home country makes it

even more special. It’s all down to the team. They have done a fantastic job and I have to say a huge thank you to everyone here at the track and back at our factories who have been pushing non-stop to get the car where it is. The race was tougher than it perhaps looked today and the conditions here always make it a great challenge. But I was able to look after the car, the tyres and the fuel and still keep a bit of pace in hand which made my job that little bit easier. It’s great to see Mercedes leading the championship but we know that we have to make these early races pay. Anything can happen as we saw in Australia, so this is an important result for us. One-two finishes don’t happen very often and this is a real achievement for the team. Finally, I would like to offer this victory in tribute to all those affected by the tragedy of MH370. A special mention also goes to my step-mum Linda for her 50th birthday tomorrow!,” said Lewis Hamilton immediately after the race. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

Danish Rookie Kevin Magnussen (extreme right) with Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo. After the race Ricciardo got penalised, thereby losing his second position at the Australian GP

With Ricciardo getting penalised, the rookie comes in 2nd Immediately after an exciting finish wherein local lad Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull RacingRenault finished second in the Australian GP held on March 16, 2014, it was announced that he will be penalised. Thus Ricciardo lost his second-place in the race after stewards decided his car had run with too high a fuel flow rate during the race. The decision of the stewards will be opposed by team Red Bull Racing-Renault and the latter has appealed against this decision. With Ricciardo out, rookie man Kevin Magnussen of Denmark of McLaren-Mercedes has been relegated to position two. According to news F1 news, under article 5.1.4 of the new 2014 technical regulations, cars are limited to a fuel flow rate of 100kg/hour, as measured by an FIA-homologated sensor on MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

the car. It is reported that Red Bull team was warned by the FIA’s technical representative during the race that the fuel flow on Ricciardo’s car was too high. The warning was not taken seriously by the team. Red Bull said in a statement, “Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane. The Team and Renault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations.” With Ricciardo out, that meant that Red Bull scored a duck in its opening race of F1. His teammate Sebastian Vettel had retired early in the race. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes AMG Petronas also retired during the season’s first Formula One race in Australia. Rookie driver from

Denmark Kevin Magnussen of McLaren-Mercedes got a podium finish as he came in third place but after the decision on Ricciardo was pushed to second place. It is the first ever podium finish for a Danish player! For Kevin Magnussen it was a podium finish on his F1 debut. First to come in the race was Nico Rosberg of Mercedes AMG Petronas. This also meant that Jenson Button of McLarenMercedes got a podium with a third position. He was followed by Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. Good news for Indian fans as Nico Hulkenberg of Force India-Mercedes came in seventh (now sixth after the latest development) and grabbed eight points for this team. His teammate Sergio Perez thus came in came in 10th and gets one point. APRIL 2014 / 43

e as a mass community are very careful about how we spend money. Look around, every penny out the pocket must transform into an advantage. And we do that whilst buying a plain trouser. Imagine how pedantic one must be while buying a car. Everything must be present from space, comfort and performance to fuel efficiency,

low maintenance costs, and value. Another new iteration to this vast list is technology, new professionals buying new cars feel the need to be connected on the move as well. Nowadays simple hatchbacks don’t cut the mustard anymore for these new bubbly tech-savvy families. This is the reason that the compact saloon market saw a lot of action in recent times. And why not, after-all they serve the right

purpose for these people. In the segment comprising of Tata Indigo eCS, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Honda Amaze, Hyundai has decided to introduce their version of the perfect family car with the new Xcent. Let this be absolutely MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

clear from the start that this is not the rejuvenation of the old faithful Accent. The Xcent shares its platform with the i10 Grand. In fact from the front you will not be able to tell the difference between the hatch and the MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

saloon. The change is at the rear where Hyundai has neatly integrated a boot and created a pretty looking compact car. The boot integration has been executed so beautifully that there is no break from the flowing fluidic design philosophy. The

i10 Grand is a fine looking hatch, and adding a boot to create the Xcent has further added appeal to the range. The Xcent gets fantastic looking 14 inch diamond cut alloys, and you can opt for the 15 inch alloys in the option variant. I am very happy with the fit and finish of the entire package. Every panel fits very well and all the APRIL 2014 / 47

creases on the body are smooth. The only bit that stands out is the tail light assembly which is smaller in proportion and looks odd. Chrome detailing on the front, especially on the black coloured car that I drove, adds a touch of class to this compact and also differentiates it from its hatchback sibling. Interior of the new Xcent is an interesting place to be. The dual tone black and beige dash board has perfect colour combination and is very well put together. The feel and quality is brilliant for a car in this price bracket. The feature list is richer than the hatch as well. Where the hatch has air-conditioning, the Xcent has climate control with rear vents. We drove the car on a sunny 36 degree Celsius day and the cabin was kept cool and fresh by the climate control throughout. The steering has audio mounted controls, 48 / APRIL 2014

which for ease of use gets bigger buttons on the Xcent. But you do tend to unintentionally press them, as it is a steering wheel and the funny thing about steering is that it moves. Xcent gets 2 DIN integrated audio with Bluetooth connectivity and 1 GB memory to store content. There are cubby holes around the front and back to stop your stuff jiggling about in the cabin. Glove box gets cooling feature which is very convenient for our summers. The seats are comfortable, both at the front and the rear. Owners will be surprised at the space that Hyundai engineers have squeezed out in this compact saloon. There is more

than enough legroom for you, whether you are driving, or are being a passenger at the rear. Customers can choose between a 1.1 litre diesel engine and a 1.2 litre kappa petrol engine for their Xcent. The 1.1 litre U2 CRDi diesel engine comes with a 5-speed manual, and you can choose between a 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic with the 1.2 litre kappa petrol. We drove the 1.1 litre diesel which has 3-cylinders and packs nearly 180Nm torque. Now the engine and MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

transmission has been borrowed from Xcent’s younger sibling, but have been fettled with for more performance and efficiency. The grunt of this engine can be clearly felt in the mid-range because in the real world, midrange is what you require most of the time. A potent mid-range encourages lesser gear shifts and easier overtaking. This diesel version did nearly touch 160kmph top whack on our drive, but you notice that it doesn’t like that and crosswinds tend to sway the car. The Xcent is most comfortable between 80kmph to 130kmph on a highway. One very commendable feat this car possesses in the fantastic NVH level. The Xcent has a very quiet cabin and you can settle in a comfortable conversation at high speeds. Ride and handling is again a forte of this car, and added to MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

the light steering wheel and smooth shifting transmission, the driving experience is more than just satisfying. The suspension setup is bang on between the right levels of stiff and soft. The car remains composed on uneven surfaces and also keeps the occupants comfortable while doing it. Xcent is truly a complete package as a compact saloon. You get loads of features, some of which are not present in the segment and enough space for 4 passengers and luggage. Hyundai claims the diesel engine returns 24.4kmpl, which is a fantastic figure for a family saloon. And the feature rich cabin will keep you and

your family entertained and comfortable. Frankly speaking, you cannot go wrong with the Xcent. Money well spent! APRIL 2014 / 49

t’s no ordinary brand. It comes with a grand legacy. Datsun is a world renowned brand and on March 19, 2014 the first Datsun will be sold to customers in India in the 21st century. Datsun originated in Japan as DAT-GO (the DAT-car) almost a century ago in 1914. The ‘Go’ will be taking on every small hatch in India and in particular will take on the might of both Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motor. Having driven the car from the Hyderabad Airport in Samshabad along a route that had some very good roads and excellent scenery coupled with tidy surroundings, the Go drove like a breeze. The moment you set eyes on the car you are glad to notice its contemporary styling and some modern design elements. For customers on the lookout for something new and refreshing in the small car segment, the Datsun Go is the answer.

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

APRIL 2014 / 51

WHEELZ & ROADZ EXTERIOR You have got to be impressed by the face of the car. You cannot miss the Datsun ‘D’ cut grille. The integrated bumper houses three air intakes. Not to miss are the large fully integrated three dimensional headlight assemblies. With the wheelbase at 2450mm, the Datsun Go is 3785mm from bumper to bumper. Ideal for Indian roads, the Go has a ground clearance of 170mm. That, simply put, has its own set of advantages, especially on the sub-standard Indian roads with some very tricky speed breakers. The driving position is

52 / APRIL 2014

higher than in some rival cars, which results in better all-round visibility while driving.

INTERIOR It’s simple. That’s the best way to describe the interior of the car. The moment you sit in the driver’s seat, you realise you are in a commanding position and everything around you is just about perfect. The three spoke steering wheel is a perfect fit in your hands. The single instrument panel suggests that there is no ostentatious display of gadgetry. The distinctive

white and blue colour of the speedometer incorporates a digital tachometer and a gear shift guide. One must remember the Go is a car that could be a first purchase for a family and hence every bit of guidance can help the driver save fuel. The centre section of the dashboard houses two smart air vents while two more are on either end of the dash. These

could be closed if necessary. The distinctive features for the Go are the gear lever and the brake handle that are mounted in the centre of the console. This makes a lot of sense in India because now even in crowded areas one can enter and exit with great ease, especially after parking in a tight spot. This positioning of the levers has resulted in a ‘connected’ seat in front. Despite Datsun claiming that the long seat is meant for only two people (a driver and co-passenger), one can expect to see an entire Indian family travelling sitting in front! In India, they throw safety out of the window the moment they are seated in a car! There are loads of areas for storage, whether it is under the dash or by the side of the doors. Both for the front passengers as well as rear passengers, there is enough head room as well as leg room. As for the boot space, at 265 litres, it is the best in its class.

PERFORMANCE BASED ON ENGINEERING The very fact that it took us a few seconds to reach a speed of 160kmph, it signifies that the car is light and strong. We were three grown up adults in the car, even then the car took a few fleeting moments to reach that speed. The Datsun Go weighs 769kg. The good ride 54 / APRIL 2014

comfort and handling have been the result of a sophisticated double pivoted lower arm front suspension with a torsion beam rear suspension. The Go is equipped with special high response linear dampers, which generate the appropriate damping forces more accurately than conventional dampers. These designs have been borrowed from the company’s luxury brand Infiniti where such dampers help reduce the body’s pitch and squat movement over poor surfaces for added ride comfort. The 1198cc three-cylinder petrol engine is an ideal match for the small Datsun Go. The maximum power generated is a cool 67bhp@5000rpm and a torque of 104Nm@4000rpm. It sprints to 100kmph in 13.3 seconds. We nudged it further and it easily reached 160kmph and was ready for more. When driven sensibly, the car does 20.63km to a litre of petrol.

INTERESTING FEATURES FOR A SMALL CAR Not to be missed out, the Datsun Go comes with some very interesting features for its segment. The car features an Intelligent Wiping System. This system varies the wiping interval depending on the speed of the vehicle.

The car does not come with an audio system but something more innovative than such a system. It has a unique Mobile Docking Station wherein a smartphone can be synced directly with the car. So everything your smart phone can do, it can now be done through this docking station. The new Datsun Go also features a segment first---a Follow Me Home lights to ensure that the way ahead is illuminated even after the car MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

is switched off and locked at night. Interestingly, as the driver leaves the car he or she simply pulls the headlamp flasher to illuminate the headlights which automatically switch themselves off after a predetermined period: one pull leaves the lights on for 30 seconds, two pulls for one minute, three for 90 seconds and four for two minutes. That’s enough time for you to unlock your house and get inside safely. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

SKODA 2014 RAPID

verybody loves snowfall. Okay not everybody, but most of us. Each year I make sure I visit a cold hill station to go bask in the glory of snow. This year, however, because of lots of work, I got no chance and it looked like the Old Norse Ullr had packed up and left the lesser hills of the Himalayas. Just then I get two calls, one from my folks teasing me that there has been a trickle of light flurry over the hills of Dhanaulti (Uttarakhand), and the second from Skoda informing that their face-lifted MY2014 Rapid is available for review. Lo and behold, I was off the next day to enjoy the snowy blanket. The drive from Delhi to Dehradun is not very long, and most people reading this in Delhi have already done it at least once. However, through the passing years, roads have become less comfortable to drive on, whether it is traffic or surface. You face broken patches, and

56 / APRIL 2014

the rain-weakened surface has been further decorated by trucks and lorries. To my surprise this is where the Rapid absolutely shines. The suspension is perfectly tailored for Indian roads. City driving might not much explain this, but bring it out on the highway and you can definitely feel the engineering. Right from where you touch Meerut bypass till Muzaffarnagar, you get about 70km of smooth tarmac to fly on. You can vigorously exercise Rapid’s 1.6 litre diesel engine on this patch. All the galloping 105 horses under the bonnet keep you excited and awake. What is even better is the available 250Nm of massive torque which can be actually felt pulling you to ridiculous speeds on this highway. Another notable feature is the sound insulation, the cabin is decently quiet and the Climatronic climate control system keeps it neat. The standard fitted Skoda 2-DIN audio system performs brilliantly, both in terms

WHEELZ & ROADZ of sound quality through its four speakers, ergonomics and connectivity. One annoyance is that the steering wheel is too light for the highway, and it does have a bit of torque-steer. Right when you cross the Muzaffarnagar, the road surface instantly turns from being smooth to typical what we get across India. All the effort you made the engine do, the

58 / APRIL 2014

steering takes revenge. You slalom through the potholes and bumps and all the diversions for kilometres. Not me though. The steering is very light and suspension is absolutely masterful. The ride is a tad stiff, but on bad roads it keeps the car very stable indeed. The build quality is solid and every bit on the car is tightly fixed. This new face-lifted Rapid comes with a

projector head-lamp. It works very well in the city, but not so well on the un-lit highways we have around. No really, the headlamps can be worked upon please. Scampering through the dark roads, I reached my home sweet home in Dehradun. Next morning I gunned towards the hills enveloping Dehradun. Because of the short distance, tourists usually prefer

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

WHEELZ & ROADZ spending a weekend in beautiful hills of Mussoorie. It does snow here but in the obvious months, December and January. But to find snow in the month of March, you need to drive past a small town called Dhanaulti, which is 25km from Mussoorie, and keep driving until across a bend you are greeted by a mesmerising blanket of white. The Rapid is a fun machine through curvy

MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

roads. The steering is lifeless and vague, but the handling more than makes up for that. It will not excite you, but then it will not bore you at all, thanks to the bags of torque this engine packs in. The brakes are fantastic as well. The thin crust of solid ice on the road surface tends to give some hairy moments, but the Rapid held its ground firmly. Step outside and stand in

the one degree Celsius breeze is a mesmerising experience. Everything around covered in silver looks fresh and beautiful. Really, you can experience a lot by travelling a little then just lazing around in your city and going to the pub when the sun sinks. Another important parameter is your car, it has to be enjoyable and fun, which the Skoda Rapid clearly is.

twin Nitrox suspension. The instrument cluster is pretty basic as well, and misses out on the chrome detailing of its expensive brothers. One of the nicest features on the motorcycle is the 10 spoke alloy wheels, which are brilliant especially at this price point. The skinny tyres are from a brand named ‘Kenda’, also responsible for enhancing the fuel efficiency of this bike. At the power front, the 125M pumps out a tiny bit less than the S and ST model, all in the pursuit to achieve better fuel efficiency. The fun part is that unlike the 100cc models, the 125M does feel punchy and fun for the first 3 gears. The throttle response is quicker from the smaller capacity variants, but refreshing for a commuter. The ride is surprisingly comfortable, even on uneven surfaces, much down to the comfortable seat, and also to the suspension setup. However if you spend too much time on the saddle, the seat definitely needs more cushioning, or face the wrath of the sore bum. MOTOWN INDIA SUPPLEMENT

Louis Vuitton luggage for BMW i8 plug-in hybrid

L

ouis Vuitton, the pioneer of the art of travel, has created a tailor-made set of luggage for the most progressive sports car – the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid. The collection of luggage comprises two travel bags, a business case and a garment bag. To ensure optimal use of space, the luggage items have been tailormade to fit perfectly into the interior of the BMW i8. Inspired by the visionary design of the BMW i8, the bags and cases – like the sports car’s innovative passenger cell – are made entirely from carbon fibre. This particularly lightweight yet extremely sturdy high-tech material has been used by Louis Vuitton to create a special textile. It provides great robustness and strength, and as such is made for the rigours of travel – no matter how long and arduous the drive. The exclusive luggage pieces created by Louis Vuitton fit snugly into the BMW i8. The Weekender GM i8, with both hand and shoulder carry straps, is customdesigned to go into the boot, while the Garment Bag i8 is a perfect fit for the rear shelf of the BMW i8. The sturdy hardshell Business Case i8 which is also ideal for carrying laptops, matches the shape of the rear seats; while the small Weekender PM i8 is designed to rest on its surface. The Louis Vuitton luggage series will be available upon request in a selection of Louis Vuitton stores worldwide (Munich, Milan, London, Paris, Moscow, Dubai, New York, Los Angeles) starting April 1st 2014.
