CHINESE GRAND PRIX

Hat trick for Hamilton Report: Rahul Kapoor The Chinese Grand Prix on April 20, 2014 saw the dream run continue for the Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers as Lewis Hamilton came first followed at a distance by his teammate Nico Roseberg. Hamilton pipped his teammate by over 20s. Hamilton thus wins three races in a row. Fernando Alonso of Ferrari finally saw a podium finish as he came in third. Red Bull RacingRenault drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Sebatian Vettel came fourth and fifth respectively. For Force India-Mercedes it was a sixth slot as Nico

Hulkenberg finished behind Vettel. Nico’s teammate Sergio Perez came in ninth. Both the Fore India-Mercedes drivers earn themselves points in the race. Vettel was again asked by the team to let Ricciardo pass through mid way into the race but refused to let him through. But after a couple of laps Ricciardo got past at turn 1 after Vettel ran wide as he was notified that they were on different pit stop strategies. Though Valtteri Bottas’ Williams-Mercedes had collided with Rosberg on lap 1 he

Motorsport first lap after both of them had a really good start to the 1st corner. Massa’s race was ruined with a delayed pit stop of 1 minute with rear tyre hub issues due to the collision leaving him to finish 15th. Sauber’s Adrian Sutil was the first to retire, on lap 6 due to powertrain issues even after the mechanics tried to rectify the problem in the garage. This was Sutil’s 3rd retirement in a row this season. Romain Grosjean brought his Lotus into retirement on lap 29 after having gearbox problems losing 4th gear. Despite Hamilton’s three wins, Rosserg leads the Driver’s Championship with 79 points followed by Hamilton with 75 and Alonso in 3rd with 41. In the Constructor’s title, Mercedes still lead with 154 points ahead of Redbull with 57 points and Force India racing with 54.

Lewis, Rosberg make it a sweet 1&2 at Bahrain Grand Prix It was yet another spectacular win for the Silver Arrows as Lewis Hamilton and his teammate Nico Rosberg of Mercedes AMG Petronas claimed the 1st and 2nd positions at the Bahrain Grand Prix held at the Sakhir circuit on April 6, 2014. Sergio Perez of Force India Mercedes flew in third for the second podium finish for this Indian team controlled by India’s liquor baron Vijay Mallya. Perez outpaced Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing Renault who came in fourth. Force India’s Nico Hulkenburg came in fifth. For Mallya this was a dream finish as his team aims to be among the top pacers for the 2014 season. Hulkenburg was followed by Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing Renault, Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas of Williams Mercedes and Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari. Official tyre supplier Pirelli provided their medium as well as soft tyres for the final race. There was action plenty in the earlier laps. In the 14th lap Adrian Sutil of Sauber

Ferrari pulled off the track with a damage caused after coming clashing with Jules Bianchi of Marussia Ferrari. The next lap saw Bianchi pitting with a puncture. Bianchi was later given a drive through penalty for causing the collision. Lap 21 saw Sutil retiring his car. Sauber confirmed that Sutil had to retire because of the damange caused from the collision. In the 41st lap Esteban Gutierrez of Sauber Ferrari was hit by Pastor Maldonado of Lotus Renault into Turn1 as the latter rejoined the track after a stop. The Sauber car was flipped into the air and rolled and fortunately for Gutierrez, he emerged safe from the car.

Daniel Kvyat of STR-Renault scored the final point of the race finishing 10th.Both Mclaren drivers Button and Magnussen failed to finish in the points and ended up classifying 11th and 13th respectively with the other STR-Renault driver Jean-Eric Vergne splitting them in 12th place. Pastor Maldonado of Lotus Renault started the race from the back of the grid after facing mechanical problems with his engine in FP3 causing him to miss qualifying and starting from the back of the grid. Whether his 5 place grid penalty will carry forward to the next race is still to be seen. Maldonado finished the race in 14th. Alosno had contact with Massa’s Williams on the

Will 2014 be Mallya’s YEAR at F1? Report: Rahul Kapoor, Photography: Mohd. Nasir

I

f all goes well, 2014 could go down in history as THE YEAR for Dr. Vijay Mallya. After four races in the current F1 season, his team Sahara Force IndiaMercedes is performing relatively well and in the Constructors Title chase, it is No.3 with 54 points. They are closely tailed by Ferrari with 52 points. Its driver Nico Hulkenberg stands fourth in the Driver Championship with 36 points, while teammate Sergio Perez is 10th with 18 points. So where did it all start for Dr. Mallya? We need to rewind to the year 2007. In 2007, the Formula One grid in Australia was a little different from what it had been in the past. For the first time ever, an Indian owned team was present to compete for the championship. Force India made its debut with the VJM01, using the owner Vijay Mallya’s initials to

10

name the car followed by version number. But this wasn’t the first time F1 had an Indian touch to it. Since 1981, this team was owned by the Irish businessman Eddie Jordan named Jordan Grand Prix. The team gave the first drive to one of the greatest F1 driver the world had ever seen. Jordan gave Michael Schumacher his debut race. The Jordan GP cars were also driven by great world champions and greats like Damon Hill, Jean Alesi, Rubens Barichello, Eddie Irvine, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher and many more of the likes. In 2005, came an Indian fellow named Narain Karthikeyan. Karthikeyan had an average season with the team scoring only 5 points in the championship. Unfortunately, 2005 was the last year Jordan would be racing in Formula 1. Due to financial problems Eddie Jordan sold the

Plagued by financial troubles, in October 2007, it was announced that for the 2008 season, the team has been sold to Vijay Mallya, Chairman of United Breweries Group, and Michael Mol, Spykar’s Formula 1 director, and therefore giving birth to the team “Force India”

team to Midland Group after which the name of the team was changed to Midland F1 Racing leaving Karthikeyan without an F1 seat. Mid way through the 2006 Formula 1 season Midland sold the team to Spyker cars changing the name to Spyker F1. Plagued by financial troubles, in October 2007, it was announced that for the 2008 season, the team has been sold to

Vijay Mallya, Chairman of United Breweries Group, and Michael Mol, Spykar’s Formula 1 director, and therefore giving birth to the team “Force India”. In 2008 January, Vijay Mallya formally launched the car and announced in Mumbai the two drivers who would be driving for the team. Mallya claimed they had retained Adrian Sutil and brought on ex Jordan Grand Prix driver Giancarlo

Fisichella. Equipped with an engine supplied by Ferrari, Vijay Mallya had informally declared a goal for the team to finish on the podium in 3 years time. Unfortunately, after a promising performance by both drivers, the team concluded the season with no points on the table. After dramatic rule changes for the following season, 2009 was a bit different for Force India.

Motorsport Force India signed a 5 year deal with Mercedes-Benz as the engine supplier and retained both drivers. With the new rules came new technology. Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) was introduced which recovered energy from breaking, harvested and supplied a power boost to the engine when desired. But this was optional which Force India felt was unnecessary weight and couldn’t afford, finally deciding to leave it out. Later on in the season this would play as a huge factor for the team in Spa at the Belgian Grand Prix where Giancarlo Fisichella put his Fore India VJM02 on pole in front of Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari. The race was a memorable one for the team as following the pole, Fisichella managed to take the fight to Raikkonen till the very end of the race, but the lack of KERS was painful for the team as Fisichella finished 2nd, less than a second behind the Finn’s Ferrari bringing home the first podium for the team, a year earlier than the goal set by Mallya. Following Fisichella’s display of performance in the Force India, Ferrari offered the Italian his dream--- To drive for Ferrari from the following race in Italy to replace Filipe Massa, who was hospitalised after a near fatal crash two races earlier in Hungary forcing him to sit out the rest of the season. Force India relieved Fisichella of his contract, leading Vitantonio Liuzzi, the teams test driver to step up and take his seat. In Italy, Sutil finished 4th scoring 4 more points for the team and setting the team’s first fastest lap in Monza. Force India faced a points drought for the rest of the season as Sutil and Liuzzi failed to score anymore, thus, concluding the season with 13 points finishing 9th in the

championship. The following season in 2010, the team retained Sutil and Luizzi, confirming Paul di Resta as their test driver for the season to drive the VJM03. Force India had an improved season on-track finishing 7th in the constructors championship with 68 points but off track problems surfaced as many key personnel left the team. With the team continuing to grow despite the challenges, the team dropped Luizzi and promoted Paul di Resta as co-driver with Adrian Sutil for the VJM04 in 2011. In the inaugural race in Australia, Sutil and di Resta finished the race in eleventh and twelfth places respectively but were later promoted to ninth and tenth after both Sauber cars were disqualified for a technical infringement relating to the rear wing of both their cars. In October 2011 a company with a history of supporting Indian sport, Sahara India bought 42.5pc of the Force India’s shares at US$ 100 million renaming the team to Sahara Force India just before the inaugural Indian Grand Prix where Sutil scored 2 points for the team finishing 9th in the race. Force India finished sixth in the Constructors’ Championship with 69 points, four points behind Renault. In 2012, with Sutil banned on track for a year due to actions off-track, Sahara Force India brought on Nico Hulkenberg to replace Sutil. Due to the unrest in Bahrain, Force India tried to pull out of the Grand Prix, but was convinced to participate after a confrontation with F1 Chief Bernie Ecclestone. Force India classified 7th in the Constructors Championship with 109 points to conclude the season.

File photo: Vijay Mallya The following year, Sutil returned and replaced Nico Hulkenberg who moved to Sauber while retaining di Resta. Hulkenberg and di Resta showcased their skills and the cars potential by taking the fight to the leaders from the start, with Sutil leading the opening race in Australia and the team scoring a double point finish. Di Resta was is in form, matching his best-ever result with fourth in Bahrain and scoring in seven of the first eight races, while Sutil went on a giant-killing

mission in Monaco to finish fifth in a race peppered with overtakes. The mid-season point saw dramatic rule changes after multiple tyre blowouts at Silverstone and Pirelli had to change tyre compounds which affected the car’s performance, but the team bounced back in the last races of the season, scoring crucial points at home in India and in Abu Dhabi to secure sixth place in the Constructors’ Championship with 77 points. Now comes year 2014.

With 4 races concluded in 2014, and Mercedes AMG Pertonas team dominating the field, the Sahara Force India team with the Mercedes engines has already shown a lot of promise, as the team swapped drivers with Sauber, leaving Nico Hulkenberg to return and Sutil to drive for Sauber. Sergio Perez joined the team after being replaced in Mclaren, and the combination has done wonders for the Silverstone based team.

oyota calls it a cross and nobody in India really knows what a cross means. Anything masculine looking is called an SUV and anything small that looks like an SUV is called a compact SUV. The Etios Cross is not an SUV, yet you cannot help looking at it and saying, “Hey, that’s a compact SUV”. Well, it’s just an Etios Liva hatchback, made to wear a handsome armour made of plastic. When we got our hands on an Etios Cross VD variant, the first thing that struck me was, why not indulge in some off-roading. By jove! It did behave well and its suspensions and engine power did not disappoint me. But this car is not an off-roader, mind you, Sir. This one’s

just a smart looking car that has the character of youth etched all over it. The Etios Cross comes with three engine options—a 1.4 litre diesel (1364cc), a 1.5 litre petrol (1496cc) and a 1.2 litre petrol (1197cc). There will be two variants of the diesel version and one each of the two petrol engine versions. The dual SRS airbag (for driver and co-passenger) will be available in the 1.5 litre petrol variant (V) and the top end diesel variant (VD). No airbags for the 1.4 litre petrol variant (G) and the lower variant of the

14

diesel (GD). The G variant will also not have an ABS with EBD. The car’s bound to excite the younger generation looking out for some fun in life. Everything macho appeals to the modern world, and there is no reason why the Etios Cross will not excite the youth. Apart from a masculinity angle, it’s a small car and easy to handle and easy to park. The Cross comes with a lot of smart plastic claddings with silver accents, impressive front bumper with skid plate, roof rails,

side turn signals integrated with fog lamps and 15inches alloy wheels. All the plastic frills add to the dimensions of the Etios Liva resulting in the Cross becoming 120mm longer, 40mm wider and 45mm taller than the standard Liva. For those hankering for mileage, the diesel engine offers a mileage of around 23.59kmpl while 1.5 litre petrol offers 16.78kmpl and the 1.2 litre petrol, a 17.71kmpl. The interiors are not uber rich in texture, but it’s not tacky either. The embossed seat fabric with the Cross logo and white stitching give a

premium feel to the interiors. There is plenty of leg space for both front as well as rear passengers. There are ample slots for bottles, cups and mobile phones. The driver seat can be adjusted for height. Feature like leather wrapped steering, steering mounted audio controls, ORVMs with turn indicators, etc give the car a rich feel to it. While every car maker in the country is trying to redefine the SUV space with SUV clones of all shapes and sizes, Toyota wants to be different by naming the Etios an Etios Cross! But it’s a mini hunk and there is no denying that fact.

he sun is beating down as I step out of my car to pick up the new Harley-Davidson Street 750 from the company’s corporate office in Gurgaon. They do not deliver the bike to your house or office. They believe that any adventure with a Harley bike should begin at their doorstep. I never complain. You have to smile at your destiny. Not everyone gets to review a Harley-Davidson bike. The bike is relatively cheap by Harley standards. It is only 4.11 lakh. The bike is assembled in India. The tyres are from MRF, an Indian tyre company known for its motorsports activities. Thankfully, this one’s not like the other big bikes I have reviewed in the past. It’s too hot outside for me to enjoy the big ones in this clime. As I get on and push on the electric start button, the engine does not roar to life, it simply purrs. This one’s a tamed version from the Harley stable. This liquid-cooled HarleyDavidson motorcycle has been built for urban riding. It features an all new, liquid-cooled Revolution X, V-Twin engine. As I move into the crowded street, it turns without any major strain on your legs or back and it even accelerates fast. The bike’s street smart, there is no doubt about that. The seat is comfortable. There’s barely any room for a pillion. No grab handles too. In short, Harley believes that you have got to snuggle and snuggle real tight. This one’s street smart and

highly romantic too! The front wheel is skinny 17-inch while the rear tyre is much broader. Except for the petrol tank and front mud guard and a bit of the rear that is red in colour, there is black all over. The engine, the exhausts, the radiator, everything is black in colour. The all-black two into one exhaust delivers a soul-satisfying Harley-Davidson sound. The teardrop tank and fenders on the Street 750 motorcycle are real steel. I slip into my riding gear to begin my review on the streets of Delhi NCR. The first thing is to pour in some fuel. The bunker assistant stares hard at the bike and this is the first indication that the bike is attractive. He sees the Harley-Davidson badge, and gives me a smile. Harley is no more a foreign name in the country. People know it and respect it too. As I push the bike later to higher speeds I realise the bike has plenty of torque. This helps in taking off from lower gears too. Distances are covered in minutes. The Street 750 is a born cruiser. The cruising is fun, but the moment you stop at traffic lights, you feel the heat wave. No, not the weather kind, but the Harley-Davidson engine kinds. The engine emanates loads of heat. It’s intense and it almost tears through your protective gears. But what the heck, it’s only momentary as the lights turn green. For ages, Harley-Davidson bikes have addressed the Schwarzenegger kind of riders. It is high time the Jackie Chan’s too enjoy the world of motorcycles!

ata showcased the Nano Twist for the first time at the Auto Expo in Noida this year. This one is exactly the same as the ones before, except that it comes with a much needed Electric Power Steering, an improved air con and a few more basic features. The car now costs a painful 2.31 lakh. Any takers? The Nano Twist now come with some different colour options. This

particular one we got to test had alloy wheels, but not quite sure if it’s available on production. The build quality has a lot to improve. As soon as you get into the car, it’s déjà vu. But you do get Distance to Empty display (DTE) and Average Fuel Economy display (AFE) along with a digital clock right above the odometer in the dash panel which still stays in the wrong place in the centre away from the driver. The rest of the indicators are clearly visible. There is Bluetooth connectivity.

The stereo system sounds good. The rear view mirror could use a bit of more field of view but that’s being a little bit picky. Getting to the real part of the car, all components under the rear seats like the engine and transmission remain the same as all other current Nano variants but the drivability is improved massively due to the new electric power steering, the turning radius is tiny (4m in diameter), the steering feels incredibly light, but is a tad bit unresponsive. The car

pulls away quite well with a snappy responsive throttle, I was able to do 60km/h in second gear so the power and transmission does make this car quite fun to drive due to its light weight adding up as a major factor but does struggle at low speeds. At low revs the car is a bit jerky and on uneven roads it moves around with reasonable difficulty. The 4 drum brakes do have a tendency to lock up in case of sudden breaking over 40km/h. As far as the ride is concerned, it’s not

something one would complain about as it rides over bumps quite easily. The Nano Twist is really fun to drive. It’s light, agile, quite zippy now with the power steering, and rides well even on slightly bumpy roads. But there is yet a lot to improve to justify the price tag. What the Nano needs is basic amenities. Equip the Nano with power steering, an improved engine, leave the suspension as it is, keep the improved air con, a slightly

larger fuel tank, 4 wheels, 4+1 seats, some interior trim, shorten the height of the car by just about an inch and that’s it, price it south of Rs 1.8 lakh and close the case. Things like power windows, Bluetooth, digital fuel meters and digital clocks are just unnecessary. In all honesty, this car really had the potential to be a classic in the next 50 years to come and join the ranks of the Fiat 500, VW Beetle and the Mini Cooper. If only Tata realises this, If only…

SILENT CRUSADER A

Report: P. Tharyan, Photography: Mohd. Nasir

s I gently press the start button in the car, I fail to hear the engine start. I press it again and it switches off. I gently press it once again and wonder what’s going wrong. I cannot hear the roar of an engine. I tug at the automatic gear lever and move it to the drive mode...the car begins to move. Holy Mother Earth, this car is so silent! It not only saves on petrol, but on there is no noise pollution too. The Toyota Camry Hybrid has been in India for around a year and people in the country still have to develop a taste for such cars. India has seen its share of hybrids with the Toyota Prius a few years ago, a Honda Civic hybrid that had a bitter start and the Toyota Camry Hybrid in 2013. It’s obvious that Indians don’t care a damn about the environment, even when the car they drive is packaged so beautifully. The Camry hybrid comes with all bells and whistles in terms of luxury. Once you are seated inside, you are in a world full of comfort. The seats, the

22

ergonomically designed inside fascia, the controls etc, all of them smack of perfect finesse. It’s safe also as it comes with four airbags. Under the hood is a 2.5-litre, 158bhp petrol unit that gets a lot of assistance from a 141bhp electric motor that powers the car’s front wheel via an electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). As you drive, the power centre shifts from the motor to the engine and vice versa. When you start the car and begin your drive, it is an all-electric mechanism that is at play. The moment you floor the throttle the petrol engine takes control. The dash board display shows the power change through a very interesting graph. So how’s the battery recharged? Each time you brake, it recharges the batter. As simple is that! The interiors of the car are plush with wood finish on the dash and ventilated seats in the front. The car has a great road presence and it drives well. It’s a little more expensive than the ordinary Camry but scores high on the environment front.

he Audi A3, the premium compact bestseller from the brand with the four rings, is the 2014 World Car of the Year. This is the second overall title for Audi in the ten year history of the World Car of the Year Awards as the Audi A6 won the inaugural overall title in 2005. The third generation of the Audi A3 is now officially confirmed as a world beater. It overcame the challenge from 23 other cars to win the prestigious World Car of the Year title in 2014. The A3 was voted as the winner by an international jury panel comprising 69 automotive journalists from 22 countries around the world. The results were declared in the US at a press conference hosted by New York International Auto Show and Bridgestone Corporation Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG, said, “The Audi A6 was the first ever winner of this award and we are delighted that the Audi A3 has repeated that achievement by being voted 2014 World Car of the Year. The Audi A3 showcases Audi’s technical competence in all aspects of car making, not least in the areas of lightweight technology, drivetrain, mobile infotainment

and driver assistance systems. This major award win is an achievement that the whole company can celebrate.” With this win for the Audi A3, Audi has maintained its position as the manufacturer with the most World Car of the Year titles.

Double whammy for BMW i3 The BMW i3 romped home with two prestigious global awards when it was declared the 2014 World Car Design of the Year as well as 2014 World Green Car “On behalf of the BMW design team, we are delighted that the BMW i3 has received the World Car Design of the Year award,” said Dr. Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Sales and Marketing BMW. “Our designers created a car that, through its design and use of sustainable materials, is an expression of the future”. “To have the BMW i3 named World Green Car of the Year is a great honour,” said Dr Robertson added, adding that “From the production process onwards, the BMW i3 is a truly sustainable vehicle, created with the needs of the 21st century city in mind.” To be eligible for the 2014 World

Green Car award, a vehicle had to be all-new, or substantially revised, in production and introduced for sale or lease to the public in quantities of at least 10 in at least one major market during the period beginning January 1, 2013 and ending May 31, 2014. Tailpipe emissions, fuel consumption, and use of a major advanced power plant technology (beyond engine componentry), aimed specifically at increasing the vehicle’s environmental responsibility, were all taken into consideration.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class is World Luxury Car The Mercedes-Benz S-Class was

declared the 2014 World Luxury Car. This was the first year for the World Luxury Car award. This new category was created to acknowledge higher-priced premium models selling in more limited numbers worldwide. This year’s winner was chosen from an initial entry list of 10 prestigious cars from all over the world, then a short list of three finalists: the winner as well as the Bentley Flying Spur and the Range Rover Sport. “It is not only our customers who expect a new S-Class to set standards – but also the journalists,” said Prof. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management

They did it by creating a car so far advanced in this segment that competitors pretty much have ceased trying to go head-tohead with the S. The exterior is completely new and the interior is spectacular on a whole new level”.

Porsche 911 GT3 is 2014 World Performance Car The Porsche 911 GT3 was declared the 2014 World Performance Car. This was the third consecutive year that Porsche had won the prestigious World Performance Car title and the fourth overall. The Porsche Boxster / Cayman won last year’s award, the 911 won the award in 2012, and the Cayman was the recipient of the inaugural World Performance Car award in 2006. This year’s winner was chosen from an initial entry list of 26 new cars from all over the world, then a short list of three finalists: the winner as well as the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and the Ferrari

458 Speciale. “To be chosen as the winner of the World Performance Car by this global jury is extremely rewarding,” said Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “Each generation of the 911 GT3 epitomises our vision

Candidates for the World Performance Car award must demonstrate a specific and overt sports/performance orientation while satisfying the same availability criteria as for the overall World Car of the Year award. Candidates may be chosen from the World Car of the Year list of eligible vehicles, or they may be newly introduced variants that satisfy the same criteria, but are derived from existing rather than brandnew models. In all cases, they must

have a minimum annual production rate of fivehundred (500) vehicles. Previous World Performance Car winners were the Porsche Boxster/ Cayman in 2013, the Porsche 911 in 2012, the Ferrari 458 Italia in 2011, the Audi R8 V10 in 2010, the Nissan GT-R in 2009, the Audi R8 in 2008, the Audi RS4 in 2007 and the Porsche Cayman S in 2006. The awards are administered by a non-profit association, under the guidance of a Steering Committee of preeminent automotive journalists from Asia, Europe, and North America. Peter Lyon (Japan) and Matt Davis (Italy) are the co-chairs; Jens Meiners (Germany), Mike Rutherford (U.K.), Eddie Alterman (USA), and Gerry Malloy (Canada) are the directors. VEYRON 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse1 “Black Bess” for `18 crore At the Auto China motor show in Beijing (April 21 to 29, 2014) the French luxury manufacturer Bugatti presented as a world premiere the modern interpretation of the Type 18, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse1 “Black Bess”. This is the fifth model in the six-part “Les Légendes de Bugatti” (Bugatti Legends) Edition. Bugatti has revived the legendary Type 18 “Black Bess”, which went down in automotive history as one of the first ever street legal super sports cars. The Type 18 “Black Bess” is a direct forerunner of today’s world speed record-holding Bugatti Veyron. As with all models in the Edition, the current Legends model is limited to a run of three vehicles and is available for a net price of € 2.15 million ( 18 crore approx.). Of the four Legend models already presented, all 12 vehicles have been sold, said a company statement. The “Black Bess” is based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse. Its 1184bhp, 8 litre W16 engine achieves an unparalleled torque of 1,500 Nm at 3,0005,000 rpm, and can accelerate from 0-100 km in 2.6 seconds. With a maximum speed of 408.84 km/h with the roof down, the Vitesse is the fastest production roadster ever built.

LAUGE JENSON unveils the Viking Concept motorcycle Lauge Jensen has unveiled the Viking Concept motorcycle at the Top Marques luxury brands show in Monaco. This premium motorcycle is a design study that blends the talents of two of Denmark’s most creative talents: Anders Kirk Johansen, an industrialist whose family invented LEGO, and renowned vehicle designer Henrik Fisker, according to a company statement. Anders Kirk Johansen acquired Lauge Jensen company in 2012 and then Henrik Fisker, previously a design chief at both BMW and Aston Martin and the designer of the

Fisker Karma, to design the Viking Concept. The bike retains a classic cruiser look sculptured into a dynamic, flowing design. In particular the

tank, seat and rear fender blend together to create a seamless effect. The Viking Concept is powered by a 45-degree V-twin producing 100hp, making the bike capable of

more than 210kmph. it’s the first motorcycle of its type to comply with new, much more stringent Euro IV emissions regulations that come into effect in 2016 in US. The engine, built in Wisconsin, USA, has been carefully developed and tuned to achieve this without losing its trademark V-twin sound or soul. Lauge Jensen currently produces the limited edition Great Dane custom cruiser, which starts from €42,800 euros ( 36 lakh approx.). The company intends to build a bike based on the Viking Concept at higher volumes and with a lower price tag than the Great Dane.

belt and ring gearing. The rated power output is 11 kW (15 hp), with a peak output of 35 kW (47 hp). This enables the C evolution to achieve a top speed of 120 km/h (electronically limited) and gives it better acceleration than some maxi scooters powered by engines with displacements of 600 cc or more. The generous 8 kWh capacity of

the air-cooled lithium-ion highvoltage battery allows the twowheeler to cover a range of up to 100 kilometres before it needs to be charged from any domestic mains supply. When plugged in to a standard 220V domestic socket with a 12A charge current, recharging fully from empty takes around 4 hours (with 220V / 16A = 3 h).

The new C evolution scooter from BMW MOTORRAD For BMW Motorrad, the arrival of the new C evolution marks the start of a new chapter in the urban mobility segment. The company had earlier launched the conventionally powered maxi scooter models – the C 600 Sport and C 650 GT – that offered superb ride qualities of a motorcycle with the specific agility of a scooter. The design was definitely contemporary. The new electrically powered C evolution now goes even further by fusing riding fun and dynamism with the benefits of zero-emission

performance to create a whole new experience on two wheels. The scooter comes with liquid-cooled electric motor and air-cooled high-voltage battery. The range of the electric scooter is around 100 kilometres under practical conditions, according to a company statement. The C evolution is powered by a drivetrain swing arm with liquid-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motor via a toothed
