EDIT NOTE
W
e have made a switch. From July 2014, Motown India will be a complete B2C magazine with a separate section for B2B content. For more than three years we tried the formula the other way around. But it did not work to our satisfaction. Magazines, newspapers and
news channels survive on advertisements. B2B magazines require a lot of deep analysis and serious writing. It’s not like an afterthought blog. Unfortunately, it seldom attracts advertisements of decent proportions. In each of the issues of Motown India beginning October 2010 we interviewed some eminent people from the automotive industry. Many of them wrote to us appreciating our writing and analytical skills. But woefully, their companies felt it made little sense to advertise in a mainly B2B magazine. We consulted an outside agency on our business model and they studied our model for the last six months. We were told to change, we needed to repackage the magazine. With the rise in popularity of social sites and dwindling attention span among people, especially the youth, the time has come for us to change. It is in this spirit we have presented to you our new issue of Motown India. We have not compromised on the sacrosanct values of journalism while making this change. I am sure our readers will appreciate this and so will the advertisers!

LOST & FOUND!!!
DETROIT MAN REUNITED WITH STOLEN CHEVY CORVETTE AFTER 33 YEARS
I
n India if your car is stolen, it’s virtually difficult to ever get it back. In the US, there is a good possibility of getting it back, albeit a lot of years later! A Chevrolet Corvette owned by George Talley, who is now 71 years old, was stolen when it was parked on Jefferson Avenue in 1981. He must have been around 38 years old when he lost his favourite car! Now, after almost 33 years, in June of 2014 Talley received a call from AAA informing him his car had turned up in Hattiesburg, Miss. (US). Talley and his prized ’79 Chevrolet Corvette were reunited at General Motors’ world headquarters on July 1, 2014, three miles from where the car was stolen from him more than three decades ago. “It was a lucky day to hear that my car had been found. They told me it was running, had 47,000 miles on it and was ready for me to pick up!” said Talley. Talley had always been a Corvette fan since he saw his neighbour’s first-generation Corvette in the 1950s. Talley was fortunate to own three more Corvettes, but the ’79 was always his favourite. Talley’s luck did not stop there. When Mark Reuss, executive vice president for GM Product Development, heard his story on the news, he offered to ship the car home to Detroit. “George’s story brought a smile to my face,” said Reuss. “As a longtime Corvette owner myself, I know the passion the car inspires. I also knew that car belonged home in Detroit, with its rightful owner, and we could make that happen,” he added.

Each car will sport a specially numbered plaque, located between the two seats, signed by Ian Callum, Director of Design, Jaguar. The car’s all-aluminium-bodied car – which weighs 1585kg --will be powered by 5.0-litre
supercharged V8 petrol engine that produces 567hp of power and 680Nm of torque. The car will do 0 to 100 kmph in 3.9 seconds. Its distinctive roadster body, introduced in concept form earlier, pays tribute to one of the most famous and iconic racing Jaguars: the three-time Le Mans winning D-type, which in 2014 is celebrating its 60th anniversary year. F-Type Project 7’s name pays homage to
NEWS Jaguar’s seven outright Le Mans wins. Power is sent to the rear wheels through Jaguar’s eight-speed Quickshift transmission and second generation Electronic Active Differential (EAD). Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes, available as an option on the F-Type R Coupé, are fitted as standard on F-TYPE Project 7, offering powerful, consistent, fade-free braking. Another standard feature is Torque Vectoring by Braking (TVbB) which, working in conjunction with the EAD, enables extremely precise handling. Bespoke carbonfibre aerodynamic aids and a unique suspension set-up enable F-TYPE Project 7 to deliver a truly engaging driving experience.

Harley-Davidson reveals project LiveWire

T
he gas guzzler has now become your friendly neighbourhood bike maker! Or at least it’s trying to. US based iconoic motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has revealed Project LiveWire – the first HarleyDavidson electric motorcycle. Select consumers across the United States will be able to ride and provide feedback on the bike. This will help the company shape the future of Harley-Davidson’s first-ever electric motorcycle. Project LiveWire is specifically designed for the purpose of getting insight into rider expectations of an electric Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Thus, at this point no commercial angle is being looked into. Longer term plans for retail availability of Project LiveWire will be influenced by feedback from riders along the Project Livewire Experience tour. Matt Levatich, President and Chief Operating Officer, Harley-Davidson Motor Company stated that America at its best has always been about reinvention. And this holds even true for HarleyDavidson which has reinvented itself many times in its history, with of course its customers leading it every step of the way, he added. Customers are being invited to test ride, provide feedback and learn more about the story of the motorcycle. Even those who don’t get to ride will have the opportunity to feel the power of Project LiveWire through Jumpstart – a simulated riding experience. A 2014 U.S. tour, with a journey down Route 66, will visit more than 30 Harley-Davidson dealerships through the end of the year. In 2015, the Project LiveWire Experience will continue in the U.S. and expand into Canada and Europe. Levatich said in the last few years the company has broadened its reach to serve an increasingly diverse society, as well as reinvented its approach to product development and manufacturing. This, he said, has resulted in cutting-edge products like the recently launched Project Rushmore touring bikes, HarleyDavidson Street 500 and 750 models. Project LiveWire is more like the first electric guitar – not an electric car, stated MarkHans Richer, Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. He said it is more of an expression of individuality and iconic style that just happens to be electric. Richer added that the sound of the motorcycle is a distinct part of the thrill. “Think fighter jet on an aircraft carrier. Project LiveWire’s unique sound was designed to differentiate it from internal combustion and other electric motorcycles on the market,” he said.

he tyre division of leading global automotive component manufacturer Continental AG has been successfully using football sponsorship as a strategic communications platform for the last 18 years or so. In the Brazilian tyre sector Continental currently has a more than 10pc market share. It is looking to build on this position through its sponsorship of the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil. A long-term marketing strategy for its premium tyre brand Continental was launched in 1995 with sponsorship of the UEFA Champions League. In 2003, Continental signed a contract making it Official Sponsor of the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. This was for the product category tyres. Since then the company has been, as an official sponsor, supporting all of the men’s World Cup and European Championships. These included the UEFA EURO 2008 in Austria and Switzerland, the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and the UEFA EURO 2012 in Poland and Ukraine.

Nikolai Setzer, Continental Executive Board member pointed out that being the world’s most popular sport, professional football has proved an outstanding central communications platform for his company. Setzer, a board member, is responsible for the company’s tyre Division. “Since 1995 we have recorded a steady increase in brand awareness for our premium Continental brand and fired up the brand image with the powerful emotions from football stadiums around the world, ” he stated. With the world cup matches in full swing in Brazil, it is pertinent to note that the company’s tyre plant capacity in the country is being doubled. Continental has a passenger car and commercial vehicle tyre plant in Camacari, Brazil, where in 2012 1,300 employees manufactured a total of 5.5 million tyres. Within the Continental group, Camacari plays a lead role in meeting South American demand for original equipment and replacement tyres. The Continental Tire Division is today the
world’s fourth-largest tyre manufacturer, with sales of 9.7 billion euros and more than 42,500 employees. Meanwhile, there is more football on the way for tyre manufacturer Continental. The company is already an official sponsor of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and UEFA EURO 2016 in France. Now the Hanoverbased company has acquired a further extensive rights package. This package runs until 2017. The rights have been acquired from European football’s governing body UEFA. As per the agreement, it allows Continental a wide-reaching promotional presence including touchline advertising at European Qualifiers for UEFA EURO 2016 as well as European Qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and a presence on the official website for the European Qualifiers on www. UEFA.com. Continental will also enjoy a significant rights package at the UEFA Under 21 Championship 2015 and 2017, UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 and UEFA Futsal EURO 2014 and 2016 tournaments.

he demand for small cars in India is getting bigger and bigger. With BMW introducing the 1 series, and Mercedes with the A class in India, Audi doesn’t want to be left behind. Audi will launch its A3 in India by the end of July 2014. The A3 is Audi’s comeback to BMW’s 1 series and the Mercedes’ A class, but the latter two are available as hatchbacks in India. Audi have decided to bring the A3 Sedan to India which is something to look out for. Globally the A3 is available in 1.2L,

1.4L, 1.8L and 2.0L turbo charged petrol engines and 1.6L and 2.0L Turbo Diesel’s. As far as we can tell, India will get a bite of only the transversely mounted 1.8L TSFI Petrol and the 2.0L TDI for now, and both would be mated to Audi’s 7-speed S-tronic Dual Clutch transmission as standard available in front wheel drive. These engines and the transmission are almost identical to the ones Volkswagen and Skoda use for their cars including the MQB platform which the current Octavia is based on.
NEWS Pictures are from Audi Global media site. The Indian model of A3 will vary from its global counterpart.
The styling of the car will be quite similar to all other ‘A’ Audi’s to maintain the design philosophy of the German marquee, almost like the A4, but smaller. The A3 Sedan will also feature a panoramic glass sunroof, cruise control and bixenon headlights and probably not to our liking, an electronic handbrake. The A3 will be assembled in India and being a sedan we fully expect to be priced higher than the rivals. We expect Audi to price the car just shy of 30 lakh. Motown India will drive the car by mid July and the August 2014 issue will carry a full report on the A3 test drive.

New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupé launched globally Comes with LED high performance headlamps, each featuring 47 Swarovski crystals “Fragrancing” and “ionisation” keeps interior smelling good Magic Sky Control allows switching transparency of roof at the push of a button, from light to dark Magic Body Control suspension system with curve tilting function
24 I July 2014
NEWS
M
ercedes-Benz has globally launched the new S-Class Coupé. The two-door coupe comes with some very exciting optional fitments. One of them is the LED high performance headlamps, each featuring 47 Swarovski crystals! Seventeen angular crystals form the flareshaped daytime running lamps, with 30 round-shaped crystals making up the turn indicator lamps. Then there is the Magic Body Control suspension system with curve tilting function. With the curve tilting function the Coupé introduces a further world first for series-production cars: The curve tilting function makes the Coupé lean into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. Technical highlights include the head-up display and the touch pad feature. The S-Class Coupé features a panoramic roof extending over two-thirds of the entire vehicle roof; with a surface area of around 1.2 m2, it appears almost 150pc larger than on the predecessor model. Magic Sky Control (optional extra) makes it possible to switch the transparency of the roof at the push of a button, from light to dark. When light, the roof is almost completely transparent and allows an open-air experience, even in the coldest weather. When dark, light transmission, i.e. the proportion of outside light that is allowed through into the interior, falls to less than 1 percent and thus reduces heating-up of the vehicle by up to 10 °C. In addition, it is possible to shade the interior completely by means of a roller blind. Numerous optional extras are available to make the interior of the S-Class Coupé exceptionally luxurious and comfortable. For example, the Air-Balance package including the components “fragrancing” and “ionisation” plus additional air cleaning by means of activated charcoal filter is available, as is electric armrest heating as a component of the Warmth Comfort package. If the vehicle is equipped with the optional Seat Comfort package, the front seats feature the energising massage function based on the hot-stone principle. The use of the finest materials, surfaces, colour combinations and seam designs contributes towards achieving a truly exclusive car interior. Air vents, switches, belt extender rosette and trim elements are in electroplated “Silver Shadow”. This gives the trim elements a particularly high value appeal and enhances the three-dimensional effect of their surfaces. In front of the armrest is the touchpad (optional) with its black high-sheen surface and chrome-look surround. As on a smartphone, the touchpad allows all the head-unit functions to be operated using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting - in any of the head unit’s languages. Diverse controls, e.g. for the multimedia system, are arrayed as keys in a semicircle in front of the central control element. The new S-Class Coupé arrives at dealerships abroad in the second half of 2014. The two-door car is initially available with a 4663cc V8 biturbo engine. The S 500 Coupé delivers a power of 455hp and a peak torque of 700 Nm. The “Intelligent Drive” systems include Pre-Safe Brake with pedestrian detection, Distronic Plus with Steer Assist and Stop & Go Pilot, Brake Assist Bas Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus. Extremely low wind noise was a declared objective when developing the S-Class Coupé. The bodyshell and door sealing concept were configured to reduce wind noise. The S-Class Coupé is the world’s quietest series-production car in terms of wind noise, as proven by measurements taken in the wind tunnel using an artificial head to simulate the driver’s ear and test drives with specially trained test people. In cooperation with high-end audio specialist Burmester, two especially high-value audio systems have been developed: the Burmester surround sound system and the Burmester High End 3D surround sound system. The S-Class coupe costs Euros 125961.50 ( 1.03 crore) for the S 500 4MATIC and Euros 140193.90 ( 1.14 crore) for the S 500 4MATIC Edition 1. The car has a wheelbase of 2945mm, a length of 5027mm long, a width of 1899mm and a height of 1411mm.

Children in India need to play this Yokohama India game for sure! mud -terrain off-roading tyres

ow this is a game every parent in India must encourage their children to play. ‘Safety and Mobility for All,’ is an educational game designed to increase awareness of children ages seven to twelve to road safety and sustainable mobility. The game is now available in a digital version. This initiative, according to a press release, will help achieve the United Nations’ objective of cutting the number of road fatalities in half by 2020. Begun in 2000, the worldwide “Safety and Mobility for All” programme is the most extensive campaign to raise road safety awareness ever conducted by an automobile manufacturer. The “Safety and mobility for all” programme has been expanded this year with a new educational section. This involves a serious game for children ages seven to twelve years. You need not send your children out on the roads to play the game. It is designed to be played within the confines of one’s home with the family.
It can also be played in a classroom or in extracurricular activities as part of educational programmes on the themes of road safety and environmental protection. There are two characters in the game, Léa and Jules. The two participate in the big transport contest organised by their school and have three assignments. They must organise – • Daily trips, such as those between home and school; • Occasional trips in small groups, to go the country, for example; and • Special trips in a larger group, like a class trip at the end of the school year. Through these role-playing exercises the children learn to travel about safely and get an introduction to the driving code. “Safety and Mobility for All,” developed exclusively for Renault by Terra Project1, is free and available on www.safety-mobility-for-all-the-game.com in English.
apan-based tyre maker Yokohama India has introduced “Mud –Terrain (M/ T+)” tyres in the “Geolandar” series. These tyres have been specifically designed for serious off-roading. Technically speaking, these Geolandar M/T+ tyres are wellequipped to deflect lateral impacts during extreme conditions. Designed for high performance and maximum visual impact, the mud terrain tyres are available in two sizes--- 31X10.50R15 and 33X12.50R15. The tyre has new dual protection bars that enhance cut and puncture resistance capabilities of the tyre, while its stepped central groove aids in surface grip. Takeshi Fujino, MD – Yokohama India noted that off-roading is increasingly becoming popular in the country as a new weekend adventure sport. Off-roading takes a vehicle through some tough terrains consisting of sand, gravel, riverbeds, mud, snow and rocks. Tyres like the one Yokohama has introduced help the vehicle to drive through such tough terrains. “The Geolandar M/T+’s twin cut groove design also enhances traction for even better overall control while enhancing surface grip,” added Mr. Fujino. Yokohama India recently inaugurated its first India manufacturing unit which was built with an investment of over 300 crore. Yokohama India is a 100pc subsidiary of The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd of Japan.

xtremely flat sales of the Inazuma motorcycle have literally forced motorcycle manufacturer Suzuki Motorcycles India to slash the price of the bike by almost 1 lakh. The motorcycle was launched end-January 2014 a little before the Auto Expo 2014. At the launch it was generally felt that the bike was overpriced. It was launched at a price of 3.01 lakh. At much lower prices one could get the likes of KTM Duke 200, the CBR 250R, etc. Bowing to consumer demands, Suzuki Motorcycles has slashed the price of the Inazuma by 1 lakh to 2.09 lakh (Ex-Showroom Delhi). According to the latest SIAM data, Suzuki produced 11 Inazuma bikes in April-May 2014 but managed to sell only three. In May, Suzuki manufactured 2 but failed to sell a single unit. o one ever buys a Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) because it never tops their desire list. You simply buy it because you need one. Kids will never put up a poster of a ‘People Carrier’ on their wall. It’s simple; kids want to see something that looks cool. You have got to attract their attention. But finally things have changed in this segment! Now comes the Honda Mobilio, the first ever people carrier you would actually WANT to buy. It’s the first people carrier or MPV that would make it to a bedroom wall of a teenager. The designers probably used a Katana instead of a pencil. The shape of the front, especially in white with the black accents, reminds me a little bit of Asimo’s helmet, Honda’s humanoid robot. The lines along the sides of the car and the design of the rear on this MPV are breathtaking with those bold lines that seem to resemble the slash of a Katana by a designer who has a Samurai fixation. And when you get to the Mobilio RS that looks like a Samurai mask itself with brand new LED integrated headlamps, new front and rear bumpers, skirting in the side along the bottom of the doors and a rear spoiler with blingy alloys which just looks fantastic. The interiors is where you feel a little let down though. It’s just lifted from the Brio and the Amaze. On the top model you get a faux wood finish on the console panel and a digital touch screen AVM (audio video monitor) with satellite navigation which is great with the leather upholstery but Honda could have used some of the money on research and development when it came to the interiors. A little bit of attention to detail would have helped majorly for the car. For instance, because the car is available abroad, the panel is just lifted from there which makes the knobs and buttons on

the opposite sides to the driver. It just doesn’t do justice to the beautiful exterior. But then it also translates to cost cutting or cost saving, which could in a way reflect in the prices of the Honda Mobilio. The Mobilio is enormously spacious, seating 7 people in a 2+3+2 configuration. the overall length of the car is 4683mm which makes it a little bit longer than the Ertiga, so there is ample room for relatively tall people in the front and middle row, but the 3rd row can be a little cramped for the two people and just like the others in its segment, you sit with your knees high but there is enough room to keep you from complaining. In the top model, the seats come with sumptuous beige leather upholstery as in the RS, but the models below it will come with fabric covered seats.

The Mobilio is powered by the 1.5 litreiVTEC petrol and iDTEC diesel. Mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox, the engines produce117bhp@6600rpm (petrol ) and 98bhp@3600rpm (diesel). What Indians will love more about this MPV is that it churns out with mind boggling fuel economy of 17.3km/l for petrol and 24.2km/l for the diesel. But the Mobilio RS will only be available in the 98bhp diesel. On the beautiful and scenic NH-3 between Mumbai and Nashik, we had the honour of driving both of these incredible machines. The Mobilio is just fun to drive, the size of the car isn’t much which makes it really zippy and agile and there is minimum body roll, even at high speeds, the cars shows minimal pitching to either side all thanks to

Mobilio RS the low height of less than 1700mm. With a fairly light overall weight of the petrol variant being less than 1200kilograms, the Mobilio is quick to respond to its throttle pedal, but downshifting in the petrol is a bit difficult to get right. But if you do, it does leave you with a sense of amazement. There is nothing wrong with it, one just needs to know what the gear ratios are, and once you figure them out, you’ll love it with all your heart. Don’t change gear when you think you need to, change when the car needs…that it is my advice. The diesel, however, is a different story, with less power, and almost a 100kgs heavier, on paper, the petrol engine would annihilate the diesel, but on tarmac, the diesel doesn’t need a professional driver to handle the gearbox and with a more responsive throttle it easily climbed up to 140kmph until we met traffic on the highway. I am sure we could easily do 180 without a glitch. The car is based on the Brio and Amaze chassis, so it’s not that surprising if you have driven either of them. Especially when you realise the engine is from the City so it just loves to rev. I would like to mention that I am not a big fan of electric steering wheels, which
is standard with the Mobilio, hence it lacks any feel from the steering. You just can’t quite figure out which way the front wheels are pointing. But you would really care as you’d be having so much fun. On the road the car is great, but to meet the demands of the customers and the challenge set by the competitors, the Mobilio needs to impress off road as well, which it unsurprisingly does. Bumpy roads, loose gravel or wet grass, the Mobilio rides over all with barely any apprehension. On the hills it may lack slightly behind the Innova because of its front wheel drive compared to the Innova’s rear wheel drive. The suspension is soft and comfortable, I had no complaints whatsoever. I feel it’s a great car that loves to be driven and you will surely love it back. It will even take your averagely large “khatha- peetha” Indian family in comfort and style. Maruti needs to up the ante now to stand even next to the competition which the Japanese competitor has brought about. If Honda is serious and means business, they will price it competitively. The Samurai Warriors always mean business.

ow this one’s much more exciting than Sunny Leone. The new Nissan Sunny may carry the same power plant from the 10th generation Sunny, but it’s got a lot of aesthetic changes both inside as well as outside. The car comes in two engine options, a 4 cylinders, 16 valves (DOHC) 1498cc petrol and a turbo charged with intercooler 8 valves (SOHC) 4 cylinder diesel. The diesel one has been tweaked to get better mileage without tinkering with the performance. The car now offers as much as 22.71km to a litre of diesel fuel. That’s really heartening, especially when prices of diesel too are going up by the day. For the petrol engine model Nissan continues to offer a 5 speed manual transmission and an automatic (CVT). Nissan has redesigned the exterior of the car with a great amount of smart chrome touches. As for the interiors, the car has a plethora of changes. Just before going to press, Nissan announced the prices of the new Sunny. It ranges from 6.99 lakh to 9.80 lakh, exshowroom, New Delhi. Nissan always referred to the Sunny as the caar. Yes, it’s got so much of space that it’s the best in its segment, comparable to the space offered by some of the cars in the segments above it. The car now has a bigger front grille and boomerang shaped headlamps. The car comes with subtle chrome detailing around it. Of course, as you go up the variant table, the fitments just get better. The top end even has side air bags, apart from other luxury fitments and feel. The new Sunny has a redesigned dashboard, piano black centre console with premium audio system and a new premium steering wheel with added functionality. The rear end of the car also gets the premium

touch with redesigned, flared bumper, black diffuser cladding and chrome trunk garnish. There is also a short antenna at the rear end of the roof. It looks chic, I must admit. The car rests on stylish 12-spoke Y-pattern alloy wheels. The Bluetooth-enabled premium audio lends a richer feel inside. The XV variants get a 5.1-inch display for the audio system, which also doubles up as a display for the rear parking camera. The New Sunny also gets an all-new steering wheel with integrated audio and telephone controls. Top end models come with leather seats, individual rear reading lamps and air blower for rear passengers. Safety features like ABS, EBD and Brake Assist are standard across all variants as is the driver airbag, while a passenger airbag is available from XV grade onwards. Buyers can also opt for side airbags on the XV Premium Safety variant. The NVH levels of the new Sunny have also been improved for a quieter cabin. This was quite apparent
when we drove the car for several kilometres on Port Blair’s above average roads. Even while driving along the winding roads, I felt the car handled much better and yes, the steering wheel too felt good to hold. I distinctly remember not liking the feel of the steering when the 10th generation was launched a year or so back. Now, it’s far better and that too it comes with smart controls. I would say, the new Sunny comes as a very practical family car with lots of rich-feel features thrown in. Value for money? Yes, by all means!

your boring lives. We got a Ranger RZR XP 900 for a short drive, off the beaten path. This once was a rally-ready vehicle, having won several prizes in the past in the country. Like the speed junkie I am, I gladly agreed to take it for a spin in the jungles near the MG Road in Gurgaon. The off-road terrain was rough and exciting. The RZR XP 900 weights less than 600 kilos and is powered by an 875cc mid mounted 4-stroke, 2 cylinder engine which in all honesty
is a lot for something that weighs that less. The engine is mated to an automatic PVT transmission with low and high range and all wheel drive or 2 wheel drive on demand. Behind the bulky cast aluminium wheels, you have 4 hydraulic Disc brakes with BoreCalipers in the front to stop you from hitting a tree or falling into a ditch. The overall design of the exterior isn’t much, except the moulded plastics to make it look like a car with head lamps and a roll

cage to protect you. With all the mechanical elements exposed, you can see them working quite clearly and I love that. Yet with barely any body panels, it looks mean, beautiful and alluring.
IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT Inside the cabin you have the steering wheel which can be easily adjusted, a digital gauge with speedometer, a gear indicator, two seats, two pedals and a gear lever. In the one I drove, the standard seats had been removed and were replaced with racing seats with a 5 point harness which I’m quite thankful for. All strapped in and for the first time with
apprehension in H mode, I gingerly ease on the throttle and nothing happens, you press a little more and still nothing and then you press a little further and you go like hell. The steering is so easy to use, the system works perfectly and the big bulky tyres seem to be made out of helium as it made its way on some very bumpy terrain. It’s just so smooth and still easy to maneuver. If you get caught up on a hill, you can stop and just easily get up without a hitch, or if it seems too steep, put it into low range at it will get you out no matter what the surface or angle of the hill. But mind you, this Polaris Ranger is not something that you only have fun with over the weekend. It can be modified and put to great use. Polaris can fit the car with accessories to your liking. For a large farm you can get Plows or Winches attached to the front, or get a cabin enclosure to feel a bit safer, bumper guards and covers to protect the car, a stereo to entertain you, luggage and storage for added practicality or you can also opt for a 4 seater for your family. It’s not a road legal vehicle, but off-road it’s a man’s best friend. Farmers, construction workers, paramedics, army men, and sundry other people living and serving in the country’s inhospitable terrains can make full use of this vehicle, putting it to some very purposeful tasks. But for those living in the mundane concrete world like me, the Polaris Ranger RZR XP 900 is your best friend, off the beaten path!

orld over, men and women are obsessed with products and services that offer value for money. And they are so right. The moment the “value for money” criterion is met, we wouldn’t even give it a second thought and just go for it. No matter what it costs or what it looks like, if we have the cash, and it’s good value, we will spend it. BMW decided to introduce the 3 series Grand Turismo in India and priced it between the 3 series and the 5 series. Is this car which costs upwards of Rs 42 lakh value for your money? From the outside, the front looks quite similar to the 3 series, but as you move to the side, it all goes south from there. In my opinion, in terms of style, there is no other brand (barring the super / performance car brands) that delivers the kind of superior styling and design that BMW does. It’s exciting, yet elegant, not compromising on either side. The Grand Turismo is like the goat in a herd of sheep. I also feel all BMWs look best in White or Silver. Yes, the Midnight Blue is a BMW trademark, but the blue, black and brown; the car loses its curves which deserve to be visually pronounced. BMW has covered this car with chrome where ever they could; on the front and rear bumpers, around the kidney grilles and along the edge of the side windows which make it a bit louder than it needs to be but surprisingly still maintains its subtleness.

The roof of the car meets the rear in a coupé like design. It’s also taller, wider and bulkier than its plain Jane 3-series model. In other words, it’s the burger eating sister of the 3 series, gaining a lot of weight around the hips. But then it’s not the size that matters, it’s how you use it. So what does that extra size and weight do to the 3 series? Well, it gives you a lot more legroom in the back than the ordinary 3 series but the transmission tunnel in the middle will be annoying for the ones sitting in the middle of the rear seat. If you want more room, the Grand Turismo has a giant boot that is big enough for three more people or if you’re sensible, your luggage. What’s more is that you can lower the back seats to create a larger boot made easy by the two handles on each side of the boot. The hat racks can also be removed and cleverly tucked away in the storage compartment under the boot floor and if you look up, you get a panoramic sunroof as standard.BMW have also provided for the first time an active rear spoiler that takes a peek when you reach a 110 kmph. The interiors are identical to the standard 3 series which is good but it could have been better with Sat Nav that was missing. The iDrive is brilliant and quite interesting. You have 3 modes, Eco Pro, Comfort and Sport along with a button that turns off the traction control. So are these modes any good? In comfort mode, it’s slightly wobbly at high speed turns but only enough as you would expect with the added weight and height. But among the three modes, if it was me, I’d never use the comfort mode, partly because the other two modes are just brilliant. The Eco Pro mode is my favorite. I did almost the entire test without using any fuel at all. The GT is perfect for stop and go traffic. The ECO PRO mode like a simple hybrid system, the engine charges the batteries which power the car and also when you brake, you use the regenerative braking to charge the batteries as well. The best part about it is that it does

almost 40kmph on batteries which is just what you need unlike the other hybrids out there that only go till 25kmph. I drove around 40 to 60 kilometers and the needle on the fuel gauge didn’t budge, right until I found a little bit of road which was curvy and most importantly… empty. So it was time to see how it does in sport mode. You push the button and the car shimmers a bit. letting you know that its ready to let you have a bit of fun and hang its back out in the
corners, but I decided to leave the traction control on because the road wasn’t very good, nor was it wide enough. In sport mode the car just flies away like it’s on a mission. It does do 0-100 in 8 seconds just like BMW advertise and brakes just like it should when you are about to get the shivers. What I do like about the traction control is, that it does let a little bit of slip in the rear which makes it all the more fun to drive. So if you are sensible, you’d forget about the comfort mode, and use the
WHEELS & ROADS A driving experience
Eco Pro for everyday use, which feels exactly like Comfort except it gulps less fuel and Sport when you want to have a bit of fun. In all 3 modes, I couldn’t really find any difference in ride quality though. All of them are comfortable as the car rides over bumps with ease. Even in sport mode it doesn’t really give you a bad back. The steering isn’t as responsive as I would have liked it to be, but I am not complaining. It’s almost perfect. When I say almost, I mean what it is missing
is the fact that it’s not interesting enough. It’s just there, it not bringing anything new to the table. But it does set the brief. It does answer the question. Is it more practical than a 3 or 5 series? Yes, it is. But is it “value for money”? I am sorry, but no. It’s a tad too expensive for what the car has to offer, If I had to buy a BMW car, I would go for the 5 series instead as I feel there is no other car out there that has more “Value for Money” than the 530d. I feel it’s the best car out there. Especially in white!

illiams-Mercedes driver Felipe Massa was unable to exploit his pole position at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg on June 22, 2014 as Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton got back their winning one-two formula they have been so used to in the 2014 season of Formula One. Nico Rosberg resisted his team mate Lewis Hamilton’s late charge to claim victory. Rosberg won the race beating Hamilton by 1.9 seconds. Valterri Bottas of Williams Mercedes came in third for his first F1 podium. Massa had to be content with fourth position. Fifth in line was Fernando Alonso of Ferrari. Sergio Perez of Force India-Mercedes came in 6th and got some valuable points for his team while his team mate Nico Hulkenberg came in ninth just behind Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull racing-Renault. Kevin Magnussen of McLaren-Mercedes was seventh behind Perez. It was heartening to see Hamilton go all out in the beginning of the race when he shot past several drivers in the first lap itself to come a clean fourth. The race saw a close fight between the Williams and Mercedes as all four drivers started off on super soft Pirelli tyres. Both Rosberg and Hamilton switched to the softs later while Massa and Bottas followed this strategy later. Past the 40 laps, it was a keen battle between the two Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers. Bottas drove an excellent race to convert second on the grid into a first podium. Williams added 27 points to their tally thanks also to Massa fending off Alonso. It was not a lucky day for Red Bull team. Unfortunately it happened in a race sponsored by Red Bull and run at the energy drinks company’s own venue. Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull Racing had a bad start with loss of drive that eventually caused him to retire. Red Bull can find solace in Daniel Ricciardo’s fighting hard to get to the eighth position. Rosberg now leads the chart with 165 points with Hamilton with 136. Ricciardo is hanging on to third position with 83, Alonso on 79, Vettel on 60, Hulkenberg on 59 and Bottas on 55. In the constructors’ table, Mercedes AMG Petronas has 301 points, Red Bull 143, Ferrari 98, Force India 87, Williams 85 and McLaren 72.

I
n one of the most exciting races in Formula 1 for a long, long time, RedBull Racing Renault driver Daniel Ricciardo took his first F1 victory in Montreal at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit with Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg in 2nd and Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull in 3rd behind the safety car. This is also the first maiden double podium finish for the Red Bull Racing team. At the beginning of the weekend, it all looked like that it would be another show of dominance by Mercedes AMG Petronas. But braking and power troubles for both drivers saw Hamilton and Rosberg lose power and Hamilton also lost his brakes leaving him to retire for the second time this season on lap 48. Yet Rosberg drove his car to the podium with a fantastic drive leading the race only until the 2nd last lap of the race where Ricciardo used his DRS on the straight to take the lead. Sebastian Vettel was very lucky to finish 3rd as on the final lap, the Williams of Filipe Massa swerved inches away from his front wing into the barrier after a collision with Sergio Perez’s Force India who was also facing problems with his Brake By Wire (BBW) system in the final stages. Both drivers were taken to the medical centre after the massive crash at turn 1. They were later discharged after a clean slate from the doctors. Perez will carry a penalty into the next race for causing the collision. The Ferraris of Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen struggled for pace and grip throughout the race as Alonso finished 5th behind Jenson Button (McLaren-Mercedes) and Nico Hulkenburg (Sahara Force India). Ferrari got Kimi’s pit strategy wrong, and Kimi spun out at the hairpin but still continued to finish the race scoring a single point in 10th for his 200th grand prix, behind Valtteri Bottas (Williams-Mercedes), Jean-Eric Vergne (STRRenault) and Kevin Magnussen (McLaren-Mercedes. Adrian Sutil (Sauber Ferrari) was the last car to cross the finish line in 13th after 11 drivers retired leaving Felipe Massa (Williams-Mercedes), Perez and Esteban Gutierrez (Sauber Ferrari) classifying as they finished more that 90% of the race. Both Jules Bianchi and Max Chilton of Marussia Ferrari crashed out at the first chicane on the first lap as Chilton lost control of his car to destroy both cars and his 100pc race finish record in Formula 1. The question remains, if Marussia can extend the lead over Caterham or can Caterham find some pace to win the prize of 30 million pounds for finishing 10th in the championships.

ormula One champion from Australia Mark Webber who left the F1 circuit after the 2013 season, goes by the name AussieGrit on the popular social media site Twitter. Daniel Ricciardo, the man from Australia who replaced Webber in the Red Bull Racing team for Formula One, should then ideally be known as the AussieGrin. The man always has a grin on his face, even when faced with difficult situations. But now that he has won the Canadian Grand Prix race, he has ample reasons to have a very wide grin! Dream, Determination, Struggle and Reward--the four things that have gone hand in hand with Daniel Ricciardo.

MOTORSPORT
THE DREAM July 1, 1989 a baby was born with a giant grin on his face. Many can try, but that’s a grin that will never come off the face of Daniel Ricciardo. Born in an Italian Australian family, as he watched racing from a young age and idolised NASCAR legends like Dale Earnhardt, Daniel knew exactly what he wanted to do… Motorsports.
THE DETERMINATION Daniel strapped on his helmet for the first time at the age of 9 as he started his career in motorsports with karting in Australia in 1998 with the number 3 on his little Go-Kart. In 2005, Daniel made his first debut at the age of 16 in Western Australia Formula Ford for Team Privateer, where he competed in 3 races. Towards the end of the season Ricciardo took a leased 13-year-old Van Diemen to Sandown Raceway in Melbourne to try his hand at the national Formula Ford series but the car’s age rendered it uncompetitive as he finished 16th, 17th and retired during the weekend’s three races respectively. The following year Ricciardo’s talent was noticed and was awarded a scholarship to race in Formula BMW Asian with Eurasia Motorsport where Ricciardo won two races and also achieved a pole position at Zhuhai. He finished third in the Drivers’ Championship with 231 points. Gradually with his talent growing and being noticed around the motorsports fraternity, by 2007 he was whisked away by Renault to drive in Formula Renault Italy, Formula Renault Eurocup the next year, Formula Renault WEC where he won his first championship title, Formula 3 Euro Series and British Formula 3 where he won another Championship.
THE STRUGGLE With a massive successful career in junior
categories, the young man from Perth got his hands on a Formula 1 car for the first time in December 2009 as a test driver with Red Bull Racing in Jerez where he set the fastest time on the board with a gap of a second over the others. This amazing feat by the young Aussie lad earned him a seat as test and reserve driver for Red Bull and Torro Rosso. In 2010 and 2011, Ricciardo continued to race in Formula Renault where he achieved 8 poles and 4 wins in 2010, while serving as the test driver for the two Formula 1 teams. In 2011, Red Bull decided enough is enough, Ricciardo needs what he deserves, a chance in a Formula 1 seat. Red Bull told Hispania Racing Team (HRT) mid season to replace India’s Narain Karthikayan who had been underperforming and lack of budget for the team for the remaining 11 races. Red Bull paid HRT to let Daniel have a go, and immediately, he felt at home pushing the car beyond its limits, getting the best results possible from the car which Narain had failed to do. The following year Ricciardo was promoted to a permanent seat at Torro Rosso where he outshined everyone including his team mate Jean Eric Vergne. Ricciardo went on to finish 18th in the driver’s championship with 10 points under his belt. The year 2013 Daniel showed his true colours and pace scoring 20 points, finishing 14th and showing impressive times in qualifying changed his life for even better for the Australian. With the departure of Mark Webber from Formula 1 after the 2013 season, Red Bull were left with a very difficult choice. Just then Kimi Raikkonen an already established driver, whose contract had expired with Lotus F1 Team was available. So Red Bull had to make a decision, Experience? or Young Blood? Red Bull made the decision to promote Daniel Ricciardo to race alongside Vettel for 2014, leaving Kimi to go join Ferrari. This was a move so perfectly matched for Red Bull and the Aussie, he showed his pace again outperforming everyone in the field including the world champions and finishing 2nd, but only to be disqualified due to
a mistake by the team. But the famous smile on his face never came off. He strapped his boots, his overalls and his helmet once again and tried and tried and tried and achieved 2 podiums in 6 races already leaving behind all the experienced drivers like Vettel, Alonso, Raikkonen, Button, the lot.
THE REWARD June 8, 2014. A cool summer’s day in Montreal, Canada, Daniel Ricciardo standing on Row 3, after qualifying 6th the day before got into the car for a decent race and some points in mind. Little did the 25 year old Red Bull driver know that this is going to be his day. He was going to win the Canadian Grand Prix, at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit, a place covered in a layer of history, a place where most Formula 1 drivers like Lewis Hamilton, Robert Kubica, and Gilles Villeneuve himself won their maiden Grand Prix. Constantly pushing and constantly gaining on a limping Rosberg, Ricciardo passed through using his DRS on the long straight to take the lead on the 2nd last lap and was crowned victorious for the first time in his career. The smile on his face was enough to let the world know he was here to stay. He is a potential world champion. The Aussie Grin wasn’t going to go anywhere. The most beautiful part of this victory is that, in a paddock filled with politics, rivalry, and competition and secrecy, not a single person in the paddock or probably anyone around the world was unhappy to see him win. He became the 105th person to win a Formula 1 Grand Prix The question is, if Daniel could do it, why not Karthikayan who started in Formula 1 in 2005 with Jordan and in the same place where Ricciardo was present? Or even Karun Chandok? Do Indians have that special ability to be on the top of the world where the proud Australian stands right now? Can we ever hear the Indian national anthem on the podium of a Formula 1 Grand Prix? Yes, a reward is possible with dream, determination and struggle. Rahul Kapoor

One of the highlights of the day was the arrival of the new generation CLSClass – featuring a fresh new look, new technologies, new engines and, for the first time, a nine-speed gearbox. Bentley attracted significant interest at this year’s Festival of Speed, with thousands of car enthusiasts heading to its stand to see the latest luxury performance models. The highlight of Bentley’s presence at Goodwood, and making its global debut, was the new Continental GT3-R. Limited to 300 examples, this exclusive model is already proving immensely popular with customers. The Continental GT3-R is the most dynamic and fastest-accelerating Bentley ever produced. olkswagen reached another milestone in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). Sébastien Ogier/Julien Ingrassia (F/F) scored the 17th overall victory for the Polo R WRC at Rally Poland, out of 20 rallies in total. The team result was completed with Andreas Mikkelsen/ Ola Fløene (N/N) in second place and Jari-Matti Latvala/Miikka Anttila (FIN/FIN) executing a resolute catch-up to finish in fifth place. With the WRC summer break just around the corner, Volkswagen has now extended its lead in the manufacturers’ standings to 147 points, which means the earliest that it can be knocked off the top spot is during Rally France in October. The win in Poland was the 21st rally victory for Ogier/Ingrassia, while Mikkelsen made it onto the podium in the ultimate rallying discipline for a second time, having also come second in Sweden. The seventh rally of the season constituted a premiere for Volkswagen, as it was the first time that the team lined up in the Polo R WRC in Poland. Incidentally, this was the first podium finish for Ola Fløene in the WRC. Finishing the rally in second place marked Ola’s first time on the winners’ rostrum in the ultimate rallying
discipline. The 45-year-old Norwegian only got back into a cockpit for Rally Italy three weeks ago. Sébastien Ogier/ Julien Ingrassia now have a lead of 50 points ahead of the second half of the season, which gets under way with Rally Finland on July 31 to August 3. And their closest rivals are in the same camp as them: having finished fifth in Poland just seven tenths of a second behind Mikko Hirvonen (M-Sport Ford), JariMatti Latvala/Miikka Anttila remain in second place overall. And Andreas Mikkelsen has now reclaimed third place in the drivers’ standings thanks to his second place in Poland, and now trails Ogier by 83 points. The winner Sébastien Ogier completed the 304.21 kilometres of the rally at a pace of
118.5 km/h. Having now notched up 11 wins in a row, Sébastien Ogier and Julien Ingrassia extended the success story of Volkswagen in Poland. Volkswagen remains unbeaten in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) since last year’s Rally Australia. Since making its debut in the event in January 2013, the Polo R WRC has scored 30 podium positions in 20 rallies, 17 of which were outright wins.

After completing the simulator challenge, Nair was selected for the top 12 to go to day 2 of the finals for a drive and fitness test where he proved that age is no bar when it came to fulfilling one’s dream. During the fitness test among Nair was way ahead of the boys in the four gruesome exercises set up to test the competitors-- the plank, push-ups, sargent jumps, and the agonizing bleep test. A bleep test is a cardio test where you run for 20 meters as a recorded bleep sounds and you have to make your way to the other side of the 20m mark before the next bleep and the intervals of the bleeps
continue to get shorter and shorter, if you don’t cross the 20m mark by the next bleep, your run is terminated. Just for record’s sake, in the bleep test, the British Royal Marines score an average of 13, the Australian army scores 7.5 on an average, and the Royal New Zeeland Navy scores 7.1 on an average. Nair scored an 8! “I’ve never compared my fitness to anyone else. I just do my own thing in the gym and I have a few friends roughly my age, we go gymming together. But I’ve never compared
myself to anyone younger than me. I guess the other competitors have to pick their fitness levels up, because I don’t consider myself extremely fit, nor am I an athlete, I just do a bit of gymming, that’s all,” says Nair. Darren Cox, Nissan Global Director Nissan Motorsports was also surprised. He said “It’s quite amazing to see the oldest guy at the age of 41, the fittest among the lot, and his level of fitness is what they expect from all of them at this level, so the other five finalists have to pick up their fitness levels now”

Kärcher DS 5.800 vacuum with water filter
T
hose who own the BMWs, the Audis and the Mercedes-Benz’s assumedly live in good homes. It is for these beautiful homes and other households that Kärcher India has introduced a new top of the line household vacuum cleaner. Karcher India (Noida) is a 100 % subsidiary of Alfred Kärcher GmbH from Germany and is one of the leading providers for home and garden appliances in India. Karcher has a range of cleaning equipment for cleaning automobiles, both from the inside as well as from the outside. The Kärcher DS 5.800 vacuum with the new water filtration technology satisfies the highest standards of hygiene in domestic cleaning. In particular, it brings relief to allergy sufferers and those susceptible to household dust, animal hair, spores, bacteria and other pollutants. That is because its ultra-efficient filter system traps 99.99pc of even the smallest particles so that the vacuum’s exhaust is noticeably fresher and cleaner than the ambient air. The DS 5.800 also incorporates improved flow characteristics that make it highly energy-efficient. At the heart of the vacuum is a multi-stage filtering system: The air intake first flows through its innovative water filter that binds nearly all dust and dirt particles with the natural power of water. It is then channelled through a Teflon-coated intermediate filter which is washable for extra-long life and a HEPA-filter (High-efficiency particulate air) at the exhaust outlet. Since the water tank is
emptied after every use the dirt picked up does not remain in the machine and no unpleasant odours can arise. No paper filter bag is required. The Kärcher vacuum runs on just 900 watts due to its new suction motor technology it matches the suction power of a standard 1,400 watts machine. That equates to a 35pc energy saving and reduces the noise level by nearly half, which benefits the environment and cuts electricity costs. The vacuum with water filter is user friendly and has an adjustable floor nozzle that makes it suitable for all common domestic floor coverings. The length of the suction tube is adjustable. The upholstery and crevice tools are stowed in a compartment on the top of the machine where they are ready to hand. Two steerable and two fixed castors ensure that the vacuum trails along smoothly. During work breaks, the floor nozzle can be fastened to a bracket on the housing. The 7.5-metre electric cable rewinds automatically when it is given a brief tug. When work is done, the vacuum can be stowed upright to save space, with the floor nozzle hung on the underside of the vacuum.
Bentley GMT Light Body B04
T
his one’s inspired by the Bentley racing team. The new Bentley GMT Light Body B04 is distinguished by its original and daring design featuring asymmetrical lugs, a black rubber strap, a broad bezel with a knurled motif inspired by Bentley radiator grilles, along with push pieces built into the ergonomically streamlined profile. All the wearer needs to do when juggling with time zones is to pull out the crown and turn it forwards or backwards in one-hour increments. This is achieved without any loss of precision in terms of the minutes, while the date is automatically adjusted to local time in either direction. The rotating inner bezel bears the names of 24 cities thereby enabling at-a-glance readings of all time zones around the world in relation to the one indicated by the 24-hour hand. The watch has 47 jewels, a titanium case and a transparent sapphire crystal case back. The dials are Royal Ebony or Tungsten. Strap: GMT in rubber.

CONNECTED CAR A REALITY July 2014 I 69
COVER REPORT Report: P. THARYAN, Photography: MOHD. NASIR
I
magine a scenario that could be part of an ordinary home in the near future. You wake up in the morning and you switch on the television to grab the latest news. You know you need to rush to office in a while. As you watch the news you “talk” to your TV and enquire about the traffic situation and the best route to reach your office. As you get ready, the route directions are transferred to your car. When you get into the car, your car knows that you had asked about the traffic situation from your TV. The car shows you the shortest way to get to work. Your car becomes your friend and understands you. It does not stop there. Once in the car, the devices you are carrying are already paired with the car. It could be your mobile phone, your iPad, your laptop or your tablet. You ask your car to call your colleague and rattle out a name. The voice recognition system in the car connects you in a jiffy, however lengthy or difficult sounding name you say. If an SMS message arrives, your car reads it out to you. All this while your eyes are glued on the road and your hands are firmly on the steering wheel while driving. If you are not driving, you can watch a Youtube video by giving a voice command. The car can even read out an article from the web, or a review of a particular restaurant. All this data can be transferred to you phone if you want, when you step out of the car. In short, every device that you have starts talking to each other and remembers the context of everything you have done. A person is never away from the information that he or she wants. Reality? Yes, very much and it’s already happening across the globe and even in India. In India one can buy Samsung and LG smart TVs. And for those in India who have bought the Mahindra Xylo and the XUV and have experienced the voice operated commands that enable you to play music, or change the

radio station, or even get your SMS read out to you or adjust your air-conditioning settings, they need to thank a US based $ 2 billion company Nuance for the technology. The soon to be launched Zest and Bolt cars from Tata Motors will also feature a similar technology that would again be provided by Nuance. Globally Nuance works with premium automobile brands like Mercedes, BMW, GM, JLR, Toyota, Ford, etc. Nuance Communications Inc of the US is a leading provider of voice, language understanding, and imaging solutions for businesses and consumers around the world. Its technologies, applications and services make the user experience more compelling by transforming the way people interact with user interfaces, access content, and create, share and use documents. Every day, millions of users and thousands of businesses experience Nuance by requesting account information, dictating patient records, speaking to consumer devices and searching the mobile web by voice, telling a navigation system their destination, or digitally reproducing documents that can be shared and searched. Making each of these experiences productive and compelling is what Nuance is all about. Today, Nuance automates more than 10 billion caller interactions each year. It has deployed more than 8,000 customer care solutions powered by speech. The company has delivered mobile speech in more than 500 million devices to date. One billion mobile devices will include Nuance speech technology within three years. Nuance has shipped its predictive touch technologies in approximately 7 billion mobile phones. Consumers have dictated
Pictures of cars for representation purpose only over 1 billion words in over two dozen languages using Nuance’s cloud based mobile voice technology. Each of the eight largest handset manufacturers rely on Nuance solutions. The world’s top ten carmakers are Nuance customers, with more than 70 million cars on the road featuring Nuance’s voice technology. MAKING THINGS INTELLIGENT AND EMOTIVE “We are in the business of trying to make human interactions with technology as intelligent and emotive as is possible. The
intention is very simple. People are going to interact with more and more things that are packed with technology. They are only going to use it if these user experiences are emotive, it is intelligent, and is simple so that people can use it. That combines various forms of inputs. That input could be touch, text, voice or scanned documents,” says Sunny Rao, Managing Director, India & South East Asia, Nuance India Pvt Ltd. In an exclusive interview with Motown India, Rao notes that his company in essence, makes technology that is very user
COVER REPORT friendly to people. In cases like automotive, it improves safety. The company has basically four divisions. The first is the Mobile division which encompasses everything that is mobile including a car which the company treats as a very large mobile device. Then there are handsets, consumer electronic devices, etc. That’s where the company sells to telecommunication companies (telcos), hand set manufacturers, automotive systems, car manufacturers, etc. The second is the Enterprise division where it provides the same technology in different formats. That would the likes of banks, call centers, government departments, etc. The third division is Medical. In medical division, productivity is a key aspect. Doctors need to more productive so that they can see more patients in a day and when they are on their rounds, they need systems that can capture information correctly and improves the ability to handle more patients in the hospital. So the speech technology whether they are in MRI systems, when they are doing a scan, where they dictate what they see on the screen, Nuance does all that using speech technology. And it also provides imaging technology. The fourth division is more of a consumer division which is selling imaging products to OEMs like HP and Canon. These go into scanning systems or multi function devices. Multi function devices is not just all about printing and scanning, but there is a whole range of multi function devices that now come with voice command technologies. Once can instruct one’s printer to do different things using voice. It does so using scanning software. “There are plenty of cars and everyone is trying to differentiate their cars from the others. You are not just selling a car to transport a person from Point A to point B. That’s not what a car manufacturer is trying to sell today. They are trying to sell an experience. Once
We wanted to make a point that the Indian car industry was ready to innovate. We first launched our speech technology with the Xylo platform. It’s now got on to the XUV platform as well. Then we did work with Fiat and now with Tata Motors for their Zest and the Bolt... Ford EcoSport goes one step ahead. It adds media controls... you get into the cabin what do you go through. The interior is as appealing as the exterior of a car. How safe is it, what features does it have, how convenient is it? Convenience and safety become all the more important, when you have a country where the density of traffic is very high. You cannot afford to look at text messages when you are driving the car, though you see everyone trying to do that. You cannot be looking at your contacts trying to make a call,” states Rao. “With touch screen phones it is even worse now. It is impossible to make a call without crashing into someone or running into someone. Those aspects become very important, and we are working for a number of years with automotive manufacturers to educate the market and to work with them. We have to work with them on a number of things inside the cabin of a car. For example, road noise gets into your car and how does it affect the command that you are delivering. How do you reduce cabin noise so that our software works better when it gets into the head unit? Those are the aspects we have been working on and the fruits of the activity are there today with a whole lot of cars adopting
it,” Rao claims. In the automotive field in India, Nuance started its journey with the Mahindras. “We wanted to make a point that the Indian car industry was ready to innovate. We first launched our speech technology with the Xylo platform. It’s now got on to the XUV platform as well. Then we did work with Fiat and now with Tata Motors for their Zest and the Bolt. They have our speech technology, for command and control as well as safety. These include the ability to have your SMSs read out to you so that you do not have to look at it. There are command and controls to change your channels of your radio, the air-conditioning setting, etc. All this command and control allows you not to take your eyes off the road,” he says The company has divided the range of solutions for cars into three categories. One, there is command and control which is really limited to what is in the car. The ability to command your car to make a call, that’s the most simple and is called voice activate dialing. There is also the ability to listen to the text message that are coming in your phone and being read out for you in the car. Based on this text message you
can call that number by giving a voice command. You can do all that without taking your hands off the wheel and your eyes off the road. Then there is the ability to change your radio stations. It has the ability to change your air conditioning controls without having to fiddle with the knobs. Most of the cars available in India have this kind of technology. The Ford EcoSport goes one step ahead. It adds media controls. Through voice commands, one can play songs from one’s phone playlist. Some of the cars with media controls have navigation. The high end cars do come with navigation options with voice commands. One can ask for a direction to a certain place through voice command. The maps come from a maps provider. But to recognise what one is saying and play the feedback comes Nuance. The third solution that is not there in India for the moment is what the company calls the connected car. The connected car basically makes the car communicate with the rest of the world with the help of internet, for example, the ability to read out the automotive news from the Motown India site. This feature is already there in cars in Europe and USA. In essence it has a SIM card fitted in the car. That in turn is connected to a cloud infrastructure which powers all of this. Once a voice command is given, the system gets into the cloud and figures out what the person needs. It gets more and more intelligent with Nuance’s connected systems called Dragon Drive. “Dragon is the brand we use to associate with all of the communication voice input technologies that we have in the car. It can be location aware. You tell the car, ‘find me the nearest Chinese restaurant’ and it finds it for you. It gives you that information and asks you whether you need to be guided there and set directions for you. These are all connected systems,” points out Rao.
July 2014 I 71
COVER REPORT “With connected systems I can dictate a message back to you. While my SMS is being read out, I can reply to that by dictating to the car. That usually comes with pairing your car with the phone or having embedded SIM cards in your car. Each car manufacturer is doing it differently. Many have decided to have it inbuilt into the car and you pay the subscription fee for it and the other is you bring your own device into the car and we shall pair it for you. The connectivity to the external world is happening through the phone but the recognition of speech and intelligence is coming through the car,” adds Rao. THE VOICE COMMAND CANNOT FAIL With so many different types of voices and the different accents in India, does voice recognition get it right every time? Yes, says Rao. He notes that the company has to do a lot of work to before the product is released in the market. “Today from an automotive perspective, both in the ability to recognise your voice as well as reading it out, we do that in Indian English and in Hindi. On the enterprise side, we already cover 14 languages. But in automotive, we do Indian English and Hindi. As and when we see a critical mass coming out in a regional language, we will build that. We are governed by what our partners and customers want. If there is a demand for Bengali, Tamil or Malayalam, we will build it, there needs to be a demand for it,”
72 I July 2014
Rao notes. Rao says that one benchmark for the system is that if it can recognise people’s names in India whether one is from south or north, and correctly dial them, it has passed the crucial benchmark test. “If you look at any of the Xylo videos that Mahindra has put out, that is the number one thing they have stressed. I can dial your name and all the variations that you have in your phone book. The system is going to recognise all that. All that is being done dynamically and I have done nothing in that car. You walk in with your phone and the names are all there. When we release our voice command control systems we make sure we do not release beta. It has gone through vigorous voice quality testing. The last thing you want is a consumer saying that it does not work. It will keep on improving as we get more and more demographics,” he states. Recently, Nuance made an acquisition of a US based company “Tweedle Connect”. The reason it acquired the company was to help it taking the next step towards fulfilling its vision of connecting a whole range of devices. In order for the company
to connect it would need to have content delivery platforms. Tweedle Connect proves that platform Nuance India has three R&D centres operating out of India in Pune, Bangalore and Lucknow. “The Lucknow boys built out our best Hindi and Urdu speech recognition and text to speech voices. We also had very good access to good engineering talent in Lucknow coming from the two IITs that are nearby. We started that unit with 35 people and now there are over a hundred engineers there. We have relocated a gentleman from the US who has been with us for 15 years. He now heads our Lucknow division. That’s how important we feel it is. We started Hindi and Urdu out of Lucknow, we also did Tamil and Malayalam out of Lucknow. We tapped a lot of talent from government and military units out there. The Pune unit has around
130 people. It’s a new facility. Bangalore is our headquarters for India as well as South East Asia,” points out Rao. Rao is confident that with better connectivity, the dream of having a connected car becomes a reality much faster. “Navigation systems work better with 3G. We are doing a lot of work with telcos on being able to pack a lot more capacity in the limited spectrum they have. That’s a huge revenue stream for us. We work with government departments. How else do we pick up traffic information? The ability to work with local police and local districts is important. We are in courts. Most of the high court judges use our speech systems to dictate their judgments. Around 17 High Courts in this country use our speech recognition technology to dictate judgments,” signs off Rao. Legally speaking, Rao has made his point. The Nuance voice command technology cannot fail!

ACMA calls for harsh measures to combat spurious trade
Soumitra Bhattacharya (R), Chairman, Consumer Affairs & Anti Counterfeiting, ACMA with Sriram Viji, Co- Chairman, Consumer Affairs Committee, ACMA
M
anufacturing spurious automotive components should be made a cognisable and non-bailable offence. More so, because India is witnessing increasing number of road fatalities, of which around 20pc can either directly or indirectly be attributed to the use of counterfeit automotive parts. This was stated by Soumitra Bhattacharya of ACMA while addressing a media round table on World Anti counterfeiting Day on June 11, 2014 in New Delhi. Bhattacharya also called for several legislative improvements to combat counterfeiting in auto components. He said the ‘White Paper on Legislative Improvements to Combat Counterfeit Auto Components’ by ACMA brought out early 2011 was still relevant. Among the measures included in the white paper were defining in the Motor Vehicles Act as to what constitutes spurious trade, compulsory BIS certification of many more safety related automotive component, etc. The Automotive Components Manufacturers Association (ACMA) has also cautioned the government on the alarming increase in the number of road fatalities as a direct result of use of counterfeit automotive components in vehicles. Bhattacharya is the Chairman, Consumer Affairs & Anti Counterfeiting, ACMA. He is also the Joint Managing Director, Bosch Ltd. He was joined at the media round table by Sriram Viji, CoChairman, Consumer Affairs Committee (He is also Executive Director, Brakes India Ltd) and Vinnie Mehta, Executive Director, ACMA. During 2012, a total of 490383 road accidents were reported in the country
74 I July 2014
and of these about 25.1pc were fatal accidents. The number of people killed in road accidents was 138258, an average of one fatality per 3.5 accidents. The proportion of fatal accidents in total road accidents has consistently increased since 2003 from 18.1pc to 25.1pc in 2012, Bhattacharya informed. Citing the situation in the pharmaceutical industry where making spurious drugs is a cognisable and non-bailable offence, Bhattacharya said that such harsh norms too needed to be enforced in the auto components industry to deter this spurious trade. He said the larger challenge the auto sector faces today is building an educated network of buyers and sellers. The sector needs to educate the end-user base, build network of genuine part sales distributors, dealers and retailers and ensure availability of genuine parts in the market. Counterfeiting is a phenomenon across the country and counterfeit automotive parts are a threat to the safety on just the end user but also everyone on the road, said Sriram Viji. Of the total 33,000 crore after market, fakes account for almost 36pc, leading to losses to the government exchequer to the tune of 2,200 crore per annum that leads to an estimated employment loss of 1.15 million jobs. According to a note prepared by ACMA, the most frequently counterfeited parts are diesel filters, condensers, plugs, brake linings, clutch facings, tractor linings, gaskets, seals, lighting systems, shock absorbers, bearings, fasteners etc. Ocr 500 raids have been conducted in the last year across the country.
Borgwarner glow plugs for VW engines
B
orgWarner will be supplying its Pressure Sensor Glow Plug (PSG) for Volkswagen’s all new diesel engines starting with the 1.4 litre version and then adding the 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre versions later this year. Based on the new modular diesel engine system (MDB), the fuel-efficient, lowemission engines offer power ratings ranging from 74 HP to 188 HP and have been selected to be installed in several vehicles from VW, Audi, Seat and Škoda to meet Euro 6 emissions standards. “BorgWarner’s advanced diesel cold-start technology contributes significantly to a cleaner combustion process,” said Brady Ericson, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Emissions Systems. “BorgWarner is the first manufacturer to produce the PSG in series production. We are pleased to assist the Volkswagen Group in achieving its ambitious targets for powertrain optimisation, reduced emissions and improved fuel economy,” added Ericson. As one of the key components on the new MDB diesel engines, BorgWarner’s PSG combines a highly efficient glow plug to improve diesel engine cold starts with an integrated pressure sensor to improve engine efficiency. The sensor measures the rapidly changing cylinder pressure in the combustion chamber and reports the data to the engine control unit, establishing closed-loop control of engine pressure that allows the engine controller to continuously adapt fuel injection for each cylinder. Featuring a robust steel heating rod and a piezo-resistive sensor, the PSG allows improved engine performance and efficiency. In addition to its innovative PSG, BorgWarner supplies turbocharging technologies for the MDB as well.

Zero pc attrition among Mercedes-Benz India workers
M
ercedes-Benz makes some of the best cars in the world. The Mercedes racing team is making a regular habit of winning all the Formula One races. Back home in India, Mercedes-Benz India is surging ahead with double digit growths on the sales front. The year 2014 will see 10 new models from the company. It has commission a unique ‘Roof Top Solar Plant’ for power generation at its plant in Chakan near Pune in the state of Maharashtra. A few days back it introduced for the first time body manufacturing for the S-Class in India. It also rolled out the S-Class 350 CDI priced at Rs 1.07 crore, ex-showroom Pune. But what’s more interesting is the fact that the company has zero per cent attrition rate among its blue collar workers. Yes, zero per cent, that too in a country that is plagued by labour unrest and trade unionism. Motown India correspondent made a round of the Chakan plant and witnessed workers engrossed in their respective work at different places of the assembly line. “The workers are constantly trained to work on the assembly line and are made to do different tasks. Thus a worker who fits a head lamp for example does not do that for the rest of his life, he is trained to move around the car at the assembly line to do other jobs too,” said a company representative. He affirmed that the workers are more than willing to do their work at the plant and are extremely content with what they

Eberhard Kern, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India was rather proud of the fact that his company saw no attrition among the blue collar workers. He mentioned this point during the launch of the new S-Class at company headquarters in Chakan. “The team working on the production of the new S-Class 350 CDI comprises the most experienced colleagues at Mercedes-Benz India and they are extremely proud of their accomplishment in producing the S-Class over
the years,” he said. The Chakan facility is located in an area of 100 acres of land. The production capacity of the Chakan plant will soon be doubled by the year end to 20,000 units annually. The plant currently manufactures the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, E-Class, S-Class sedans and the MLClass and GL- Class SUVs. Mercedes-Benz India also operates a technologically advanced paint-shop located within its Chakan facility. The paint shop has an annual capacity of 20,000 units which is extendable to 40,000 units annually.

The industrial area also boasts of both large and small scale industries. Apart from automobile industries, he said, Pithampur is home to various other industries like food processing, chemical processing, distilleries, manufacturing and textile industries. “A large number of Multinationals and Indian companies have their manufacturing base in this region. Therefore, it made a lot of sense to set up a Logistics Park here,” Jain remarked. “Located strategically on the Agra-Bombay Road on National Highway 3, the facility will fulfill the warehousing needs of companies located in and around Indore. This Logistics Park will enable us to provide clients with cutting-edge trans-shipment as well as 3PL services,” Jain said.
Vineet Kanaujia, VP–Marketing, Safexpress said that in the GST era, most companies will be adopting newer business models and supply chain models, since warehousing will no longer be taxation driven. Most firms will resort to outsourcing their supply chain & logistics needs to a 3PL service provider like Safexpress, while keeping their own warehousing infrastructure to minimal levels. “Keeping these factors in mind, we are driving a 3PL revolution in India by creating these ultra-modern Logistics Parks,” he said. Kanaujia further pointed out that the Logistics Park at Pithampur will be operational 24x7, 365 days in a year to provide ‘timedefinite’ deliveries. “Due to our non-stop
operations, we will be providing the fastest transit time for deliveries all across India to over 600 destinations from Pithampur,” he said. Kanaujia explained that his company had invested in installing high-tech equipment at the park. The dedicated docks at the Logistics Park provide an uninterrupted and unidirectional flow of inbound and outbound goods. The park has a floor load capacity of 4 metric tonnes per square meter. It also has a truck docking area width of over 60 feet. “To make our Logistics Park eco-friendly, we have taken special go-green initiatives by investing in rainwater harvesting and developing special green zones,” he mentioned.

25 global car brands to adopt Android Auto technology by end 2014: Google
G
oogle, a US-based multinational corporation specialising in internetrelated services and products, has revealed that over 40 new global companies and brands have joined in the Google Open Automotive Alliance. The company had announced the Open Automotive Alliance in January 2014 to primarily address problems related to using mobile phones while driving and make the connected car a reality. The company also announced an Android Auto technology, a redesigned android platform for automotive making it easier and safer to use the connected apps and services that people driving want in a car. People will now be able to keep their eyes off the screen and on the road. After pairing their smart phones to the car’s system, one can easily access maps, phone contacts, music, etc with the tap of a button on the car steering or voice control. All this was revealed by Patrick Brady, Director of Engineering, Android, Google at the Google I/O, an annual developerfocused conference held by the company in San Francisco, California (US). Companies and brands that have joined the Google Open Automotive Alliance include the likes of Volvo Cars, Audi, Bentley, Chevrolet, Renault, Suzuki, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Honda, Hyundai, Jeep, Opel, Fiat,

Infiniti, VW, Maserati and Acura, besides companies like LG and Delphi. “Around 25 car brands have signed up to ship Android Auto in the future. The first cars with Android Auto will be rolling out before the end of this year,” said Brady. Google has in the past been taking several initiatives to promote safety in the automobile world. A month or so back Google had demonstrated its own driverless car, designed in such a way that it does away with all conventional controls including the steering wheel. The company, it is reported will build 100 of the vehicles for testing. The eventual aim of this exercise would be to bring this technology to the world safely. The concept vehicle that was revealed recently looked more like a toy with two seats, a screen displaying the route and a having a top speed of 40km/h. An array of sensors allowed the vehicle’s computer to determine its location and surroundings. “Cars are an integral and essential part of life. They bring us to the grocery store, they take us on weekend trips, they bring us to work and take us home. In the US an average commuter spends over one hour in a car every day. In many ways cars keep us connected to the physical world around us. But they remain disconnected from our other devices and our
digital lives. So what have drivers done to bridge this device? Even though it is unsafe and in many cases illegal, people use their phones while driving. Reports say that 25pc of accidents in the US happen because people fumble with gadgets behind the wheels. There has got to be a better way,” explained Brady to the large audience. Typically today people use their mobile phones for navigation, communication, music and other forms of streaming media. With Android Auto one need not have go through a grid of icons to find the apps that are most important to him when he is in the car. Android Auto is completely voice enabled so that one can keep one’s hands on the wheel and the eyes on the road. Demonstrating the way the new technology works, Brady noted that all one has to do is to connect his or her android phone to the car. The car then casts the Android Auto experience to the screen in front. “He can now put his phone down and he can use the car controls, touch screens and steering wheel buttons or console dials to control Android Auto. It looks and feels like it is part of a car,” he said All the apps we one sees on the screen are actually running on the mobile phone which means the experience gets better when the person updates his apps or gets a newer and faster phone. From
TECHNOLOGY music, to navigation to messages, all are taken care by this new technology that goes by the name of Android Auto. Brady also had a word
of caution.” It’s not easy to build apps for cars today. There are dozens of different car platforms, input controls, user interfaces, there is no
central way to distribute your app. or keep an update. The road ahead is brighter and today we are announcing, the Android Auto SDK so that you can
just focus on making great apps for the car,” he told the audience. The Android Auto SDK will be published soon, he said, adding that the excitement in the auto
industry is growing. AUDI TO INTRODUCE ANDROID AUTO TECHNOLOGY Audi, through its role as a

New multibeam LED headlamps in Mercedes CLS
L
ight technology in cars continues to get better by the day. In the new generation of the CLS-Class, Mercedes-Benz is using the new technology of Multibeam LED headlamps for the first time. The headlight consists of high-resolution precision LED modules, each with 24 individually controlled high-performance LEDs. These lights automatically illuminate the road with precisioncontrolled distribution of exceptionally bright light. All that is achieved without dazzling other road users. There is a camera positioned behind the windscreen which delivers the information and controls the lighting. The anticipatory camera-based active light function on bends and the new navigation-based light function for roundabouts are also unique. The MercedesBenz CLS-Class had in 2010 incorporated dynamic all-LED high-performance headlamps
featuring adaptive light functions as a world first in a production automobile. With the new Multibeam LED headlamps, the German car manufacturers has opened a new chapter in lighting design. Multibeam LED headlamps expand the Intelligent Light System’s previous functionality (Adaptive High beam Assist, country mode, motorway mode, fog lamps, active light function, cornering light function, LED daytime driving lamps) with a number of outstanding, innovative lighting features. These features include dazzle-free highresolution high beams, which react faster and more precisely and anticipatory camera-based active light function. There is also navigationbased roundabout light function.
TRW new generation seat belt retractors-FS1
T
RW Automotive Holdings Corp of US has announced that it is launching its next generation seat belt retractor – the Floating Spool 1 (FS1). At a time when car manufacturers are striving to make their products lighter and more fuel efficient, this seat belt retractor ideally offers reduced weight and smaller dimensions when compared with previous systems. Several global vehicle manufacturers in Asia, Europe, North America and South America will be utilising this product in their vehicles beginning the second quarter of 2014.In a cash scenario, typically in the earlier

seat belt retractor, a lock pawl is used to hold the webbing in place. The new FS1 design with fewer components uses the forward movement of the occupant to apply force to the webbing, which then moves the spool, locking the retractor. It offers a simpler, standardised component design that can be easily adapted to local market requirements at a highly competitive cost. It can also be produced using either a fully automated or a semiautomated manufacturing process. Aziz Canatar who works as the Global Engineering Director with TRW Seat Belt Systems revealed that the new FS1 technology
weighs approximately 15pc less than the previous generation. This makes it a more environmentally friendly product that can help automobile manufacturers meet emissions and fuel economy targets. In addition, he said the smaller retractor offers significant packaging advantages and greater installation options. The new retractor technology can be used for both front and rear seat applications using buckles and/or anchor pretensioners. The FS1 is available as a standard retractor without load limiter, but also with a constant load limiter using a standard torsion
bar. Both standard and reverse payout versions are available with the FS1. With fewer moving part, the sensor locking mechanism has remarkable NVH characteristics. Optional functions include a child seat restraint feature, sensor blockout for folding seats and a noise dampening system. Canatar noted that the design of the new FS1 offers many advantages related to weight, size and packaging flexibility. Standardised components and assembly options make it a truly costcompetitive, global technology, he added. He was confident that FS1 is the retractor of choice to
meet global market needs even for the future. With 2013 sales of $17.4 billion, TRW Automotive is a leading global automotive supplier. Headquartered in Livonia, Michigan, USA, the company, through its subsidiaries, operates in 24 countries. The company employs around 65,000 people. Products of the company include integrated vehicle control and driver assist systems, braking systems, steering systems, suspension systems, occupant safety systems (seat belts and airbags), electronics, engine components, fastening systems and aftermarket replacement parts and services.

Innovative airbag design on new 2015 Ford Mustang
F
ord is introducing an all-new inflatable airbag restraint design that provides the front seat passenger in a Ford Mustang with knee airbag protection while significantly reducing system size and weight, enabling a roomier interior for more comfort Ford introduces the first passenger knee airbag system packaged inside the glove box door with 15 patents granted and more pending All-new Mustang has twice as many airbags, twice as many peripheral crash sensors and additional pretensioning safety belt technology compared to the outgoing
model A new airbag design debuting on the 2015 Ford Mustang raises the bar for passenger safety by providing inflatable restraint protection in a smaller, lighter package that also enables a roomier interior for more comfort. The new airbag will be introduced later this year as part of a standard comprehensive safety system that includes a more robust package of sensors, safety belt anchor pretensioners, improved exterior lighting and double the total number of airbags on the all-new Mustang. In the initial application of this technology, an inflatable plastic bladder
is integrated into the glove box door and provides front passenger knee protection similar to a conventional knee airbag mounted under the instrument panel. Other applications for this unique and patented technology – which allows airbags to be placed in new locations inside the vehicle and provides more freedom to vehicle designers – are being considered. “We provide a high level of safety, quality and design for our customers and their passengers,” said Sean West, Ford restraints manager. “With this innovative airbag design, we have developed technology that
provides protection for vehicle occupants while also reducing weight and enabling greater design flexibility,” added West. To make the new knee airbag possible, Ford engineers developed and tested innovative materials and construction techniques. Unlike a traditional fabric airbag, the new system consists of a pliable, injection-molded plastic bladder sandwiched
between the inner and outer glove box door panels. After an applicable vehicle impact is detected by the crash sensor system and classified, an inflator fills the bladder, extending the entire glove box outer door panel toward the front passenger’s legs. Once deployed, the outer door helps to provide cushioning in a manner similar to a traditional knee airbag.
Volvo trucks to come with I-Shift Dual Clutch
S
weden based Volvo Trucks has taken yet another step towards delivery value engineered products. The company is now launching I-Shift Dual Clutch. It will be the first transmission on the market with a dual clutch system for heavy vehicles. The I-Shift Dual Clutch will be available later this year on the Volvo FH with Euro 6 D13 engines and with 460, 500 and 540 horsepower. Transmissions with dual clutches are already used in cars, but now Volvo Trucks will be the first manufacturer in the world to offer a similar solution for heavy vehicles. With the I-Shift Dual Clutch not only does the power-shift gear changes without any interruption in power
delivery, but the torque is maintained. The end result, the truck does not lose any speed during gear changes. Thus, the driver enjoys more comfortable and efficient progress on the road. Claes Nilsson, President of Volvo Trucks explains that in certain situations like driving on hills or roads with lots of curves and bends, a lot of gear change is required. But with I-Shift Dual Clutch this is sorted out and it brings an entirely new dimension to truck driving. Technically speaking, the I-Shift Dual Clutch is a transmission consisting of two input shafts and a dual clutch. This in essence means that two gears can be selected at the same
time. The clutch here determines which of the gears is currently active. I-Shift Dual Clutch is based on I-Shift, but the front half of the gearbox has been redesigned with entirely new components, said a company press note. Astrid Drewsen, product manager for drivelines at the company further explains the concept of I-Shift Dual Clutch saying that when driving the truck it feels like one has access to two gearboxes. “When one gear is selected in one
gearbox, the next gear is already prepared in the other. With dual clutches, gear changes take place without any interruption in power delivery. As a result, engine torque is maintained and driving comfort is significantly improved,” she says. Drewsen further noted
that for trucks, this gearbox will truly make a major difference to driveability. In fact, she said that this technology will make immense sense in heavy trucks carrying heavy goods, as it makes it easy for the driver to drive the loaded vehicle.
