ringing out a magazine with a fine balance of consumer and industry news is a challenge. It is a challenge we have been quite accustomed to, by now. We need to get the best of both the worlds. The surprise element to the July month is the brief drive we got of the new Hyundai SUV, Creta at the company’s
Plant on the outskirts of Chennai. Even though it was very brief a drive, the SUV left us impressed with its looks, driveability, road presence and toughness. The Creta will be entering a segment dominated by the likes of Renault Duster, Ford EcoSport, the Nissan Terrano and others. When the vehicle is officially launched in July 2015, its arch rival Maruti Suzuki would have also launched the much awaited S-Cross. We have got to see which of these finally runs riot in the SUV segment. Putting together a South India Special was an exciting exercise. More so, when we realised that Tamil Nadu, the land of Thalaivar Rajnikant is a super hero when it comes to automotive investment. It’s truly the “Detroit of India”. Though the real Detroit may have lost a lot of its sheen, India’s Detroit continues to thrive and do well. Even its neighbouring states like Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana are gearing up to woo the automotive industry in a bigger way. Unfortunately, Kerala is a big laggard. Despite its plenty of remittances, all the money seems to be going into buying expensive cars and flaunting its wealth. Apart from Apollo Tyres and Delphi, there is no other private player of great significance invested in the State. That’s a great shame. No wonder hundreds and thousands of literate Malayalees leave their “God’s own Country” to seek employment elsewhere. All in all, this issue is packed with the right content, whether it is a car or bike review or a top notch industry report. Consumers news, motorsport news, car and bike reviews, and a mammoth report on South India makes the July 2015 issue of Motown India a must read.

INDIA NEWS BRIEF DRIVE
Hyundai global SUV-
CRETA
Will it Cross out competition in India? Report : P. Tharyan Generally, a 200 odd metres drive up and down a smooth track is not good enough to gauge whether a car is good or bad. But when Indian motoring journalists got a chance to drive the new Hyundai global SUV, Creta for a very brief drive, up and down a small section of the testing track of Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) track, no one was complaining. The new SUV, on the lines of the existing ix25, to be launched by the company in July 2015, will be directly competing with the Maruti S Cross (to be also launched in July 2015), besides other compact and not so compact SUVs like the Renault Duster, the Ford EcoSport and several other SUVs available in the country. The car is expected to be priced at around 8 lakh for the base model, the price of a premium sedan in the country. The car will be available in four variants—Base, S, Sx and Sx(O). The Creta will be manufactured at the Hyundai Chennai plant and will be exported to several countries.
8 I July 2015
The vehicle comes with the choice of petrol 1.6 litre Dual VTVT and U2 1.4 litre CRDi and U2 1.6 litre CRDi VGT diesel engines. The engines will be mated to a six speed manual and an automatic transmission (in the case of the 1.6 CRDi VGT), The petrol engine, the 1.6 litre Gamma Dual VTVT, offers
around 122 bhp while the 1.6 ltire CRDi VGT (MT/AT) diesel engine offers around 127bhp. The automatic transmission with 1.6 CRDi VGT is the first in segment diesel AT offering. The “Hive Structure” of Creta offers a robust yet lightweight body structure. “The global SUV Creta will herald a
new chapter in Hyundai Motor India’s success story and will set a new benchmark in the SUV segment of India with unmatched capabilities,” said B S Seo, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motor India while addressing newspersons at the Chennai plant. The first impression of the car
is that on the looks front it scores a lot of points. The Fluidic design continues to influence the styling of the vehicle and it can even be mistaken as a baby Santa Fe. Resting on Bridgestone 215 / 60 R tyres, the Creta has a solid SUV stance. Journalists got a chance to drive only the diesel 1.6 litre model, with a manual transmission as well as one with an AT. The moment you start the car, in the case of the manual model, it takes off effortlessly with smooth gear shifts. The huge
machine simply darts off and even on the corners it displays a tremendous grip on the road. The Interiors are classy with leather seats and an impressive dashboard. The automatic too is very impressive when it comes to pick up and speed. This variant comes with Start / Stop function. The body shell of the Creta has been designed and developed with usage of high quality material like ultra-high tensile steel so as to ensure perfect body rigidity, structural strength and crash performance. Apart from the rugged looks and the robust performance of the Creta, it also has some impressive NVH characteristics. This has been arrived at by the use of enhanced sound absorption materials and improved engineering design of engine, transmission and body structural parts. Thicker dash panels, anti-vibration pads on floor panel and optimisation of central floor tunnel rigidity have all helped make the car a lot quite from the inside. The vehicle also comes with reinforced roof structure with multiple cross members for enhanced strength and more loading capacity. With no photography allowed and each journalist given a fiveminute time with the car, it was virtually impossible to gather further impressions about the car. It was like being with a beautiful woman in a luxurious pad and just when you are cosying up, the waiter comes knocking. You are left high and dry.
INDIA NEWS
VOLKSWAGEN to launch the new Beetle and Tiguan SUV in India Volkswagen has announced that it will be launching the all new Beetle in India along with the Tiguan SUV, Passat and a sub 4-metre version of the Vento. VW has plans to penetrate the highly popular sub 4 metre sedan segment in India to compete with cars like the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest, the Swift Dzire and the soon to arrive Ford Figo Aspire. The car they have lined up for the Indian market is a sub 4 metre compact version of their Vento sedan. The engine specifications we reckon will remain similar to the VW line up in the range. Volkswagen’s 1.2 litre MPI petrol engine is for sure going to be present in the compact Vento along with the 1.5 litre TDI diesel
10 I July 2015
engine also on offer. Whether the DSG automatic transmission will be provided on the compact Vento is still not confirmed. But competitors like the Ford Figo Aspire is confirmed to be arriving with a dual clutch automatic transmission for their 1.2 litre petrol engine and Maruti is also hinting on an AMT version of the Dzire. Whether the compact Vento will feature the DSG is yet to be seen. In the premium market, Volkswagen has even bigger plans for India. Michael Mayer, Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd. said that over the next 24 months, the company plans to bring five cars into India. With the updated Vento already launched
and the sub 4-metre Vento on its way into the compact sedan market, Mayer said that the Beetle, Tiguan, and the Passat are on their way to India. The Passat is a sedan for the premium executive market in India. The Passat was premiered globally very recently and will compete with cars like the Toyota Camry in the Executive Sedan category which has already received a high demand due to its hybrid variant. Once again, the iconic Beetle will make its way into India with its cute looks and its historic lineage attached to it. The Beetle will not be the “people’s car” that it was initially meant from back when it was developed. The Beetle will sit in a premium price bracket similar to the British/German equivalent
MINI and the upcoming Fiat 595 cinquecento Abarth from Italy. Expect prices to be around 25 lakh upwards for the Beetle. For a long time VW has had a hole in its model line up when it came to SUVs. The Touareg wasn’t much of a success in India with its 50 lakh price tag. This time however, Volkswagen will bring a more humble smaller SUV and build its way up. The all new VW Tiguan SUV will make its global debut later this year at the Frankfurt Motorshow. The SUV will not compete with the crossovers or the compact SUVs in the market. The Tiguan, as mentioned by Mayer will be priced “premiumly” which we expect as it is based on the Audi Q3 platform. The compact Vento, the Passat, the Tiguan and the Beetle will come to India in the next 24 months so expect the Volkswagen line up to be full filled by June 2017.

Le Mans victory proves Hulkenberg is meant for more Report : Rahul Kapoor Nico Hulkenberg is an F1 driver for Sahara Force India team and has won several points in the various races in the past. But a Grand Prix win has always eluded him. He then received an offer from Porsche to drive at the “Greatest race of All” --- the 83rd edition of 24 Hours of Le Mans --- where the German would be teamed up with British driver Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber from New Zeeland to drive their third entry Porsche 919 Hybrid LMP1 car #19 for his debut. “The Hulk” then went and asked permission from Force India team boss Vijay Mallya if he could try his hand at Le Mans in his free time. Mallya obliged. Nico went on to train and develop the car for his Le Mans debut. After completing the Bahrain Grand Prix, he headed for the 2nd round of the World Endurance Championship race at Spa to prepare for the grandest

test of man and machine where the car #19 finished in 6th place. All prepared for Le Mans, Hulkenberg returned to the F1 paddock for the Spanish, Monte Carlo and the Canadian Grand Prix where the German scored good points for the team. Fulfilling his duties with Force India, the Hulk then headed for his Le Mans practice and then Porsche took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in qualifying with the #18 car on pole, #17 on 2nd and #19 in 3rd with the reigning Le Mans dominants, Audi right behind them. As the race progressed, the #17 Porsche took the lead for a significant amount of time as the Audi of Albuquerque/Bonanomi/ Rast in the #9 Audi managed to climb its way to 2nd to challenge Porsche for the win. Through the race, Audi and Porsche kept exchanging the lead between themselves while the battles
through the entire race between Porsche and Audi for the 3rd, 4th,5th and 6th, positions were getting heated. Unfortunately for Audi, all the three cars had to be brought into the garage at one point or the other due to minor setbacks in the second half of the race for repairs and component checks. With Hulkenberg taking the wheel for the final stint, and after more crashes and safety cars, the Hulk managed to get on the lead lap and take the lead ahead of the #17 Porsche of former F1 driver Mark Webber with Brendon Hartley and Timo Bernhard and went on to win the race after 24 hours of gruesome racing, 1 lap ahead of the red livery Porsche. On the approach to the finish line on the final lap, Hulkenberg was asked to slowdown. When the German eased off, a long trail of cars refused to overtake the
German in respect towards the soon to be winner which included the #17 Porsche, #48 LMP2 Oreca 03R driven by Karun Chandok and many others who followed. Hulkenberg then crossed the finish line to seal the victory after 395 laps of the Circuit de la Sarthe. The 2014 24 Hours of Le Mans winners Marcel Fassler, André Lotterer, Benoît Treleyur in the #7 Audi R-18 e-Tron Quattro had to settle for 3rd ahead of Lucas Di Grassi, Loïc Duval, Oliver Jarvis in the #8 Audi which finished 4th. While the #18 Porsche in the black livery clocked a record breaking qualifying lap time, the team failed to capitalise on the performance and eventually finished 5th overall and the best performing #9 Audi finished 7th sandwiched between the #2 and #1 Toyotas which finished 6th and 8th respectively. He won the championship despite the fact that he came 7th in the last race held in London on July 28, 2015. The race was, however, won by Englishman Sam Bird. For Bird it was his second win of the season. Piquet drove in a very determined fashion from start to finish, making up a lot of places, thanks to a very aggressive strategy: his courage was rewarded with seventh place, enough for him to triumph in the title fight, which also meant that, for the first time, a Chinese team, NEXTEV TCR, has produced the champion in an FIA series. Meanwhile, Bird took his second win of the season in front of his home crowd. Actually, Bird took the chequered flag right behind Stephane Sarrazin, but on the slowing down lap, the Venturi driver was informed he had exceeded the permitted energy allowance. The inevitable penalty dropped him to 15th place. Bird’s great day also included setting the fastest race lap, which was worth not just the two bonus points in the classification, but also the Visa Fastest Lap Trophy in the very race in which Visa Europe was the title sponsor. This was stated in a press release issued by FIA Formula E. The only redeeming factor for India’s Mahindra Racing was that its driver Bruno Senna came in fourth in the 11th and final race, while teammate Karun Chandhok came in 13th. Overall, after the final race, Bruno was tenth in Driver Standing, while Mahindra Racing team came in 8th among

Meanwhile, even the cleverest of thriller screenwriters could not have come up with such an incident packed script as the one delivered at the 11th and final round of the season. A crowd of over 25,000 flocked to Battersea Park and packed the grandstands and the eVillage, bringing the total number of people through the gates over the duration of the event from Friday to Sunday, to around the 60,000 mark. They were treated to two equally thrilling scenarios. The first was the fight for the win, which apart from the two aforementioned drivers, also involved Belgium’s Jerome D’Ambrosio and France’s Loic Duval, who both finished on the podium. The result meant that Dragon Racing finished second in the teams’ championship, right behind newly crowned champions e.dams- Renault. The second big story of the day was the title fight, with three contenders, Buemi, di Grassi and Piquet, who went
on to cross the line in that order. However, only the last of them was smiling about his finishing position, because the six points that go with seventh place were enough to finish just a single point ahead of Buemi in the classification. The Swiss driver paid the price for a spin shortly after his pit stop: the mistake meant Bruno Senna got ahead of him to finish fourth, his best result of the season. The remaining points places were filled by the Mexican Duran (eighth), Englishman Turvey who finished ninth just as he did yesterday in his debut weekend in Formula E and Nicolas Prost, the only driver who has always finished in the points this season. The season ended with a prizegiving evening, which took place at the Natural History Museum in London, but thoughts are already turning to the future. On 10 July, at the FIA World Council meeting, the calendar for the second season will be published, while exactly one month later, Donington Park circuit will stage the first of three official test sessions.

2015 AUDI Q3
WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience

T
here has always been something about Audi cars that would give me a sense of happiness, a sense of excitement, agility, power and acceleration. The Audis also provide an immense ease of drivability, whether it is a 2 litre diesel powered family car or one that produces 500bhp. I had driven sports cars from Audi, RS models and their regular sedans, but I had never taken a swing at an Audi SUV, be it the Q3, Q5 or even the Q7. So the new Q3 was the first impression I received of an SUV from Ingolstadt. Many people say that Audis are boring because they look the same and uninteresting, but for me the attention to detail on Audis always drew me closer and closer into liking them. The more I looked, the more I was intrigued. I will admit that the previous Q3 was also a decent car to look at but now Audi has decided not just to update the cars, but to change the perception of the people about it. The new Q3 is now a pretty charming young fellow. What really caught my eye was the new sculpted single frame front grille finished in my favourite brushed aluminium, chiselled in a 3-dimensional shape with sharp edged cuts. The grille changes everything about the car. The new squinty head lights with the LED DRLs make it look aggressive compared to its predecessor. Thanks to the new technology head lamps, the Q3 doesn’t require fog lamps anymore thus giving an uncluttered front face to the baby SUV. The rear hasn’t been fiddled with much in terms of styling, but the tail lights have been updated with my favourite and classy dynamic turn signals which illuminate from the inside out in the direction you want to turn. Interior wise, the updated Q3 remains similar to its predecessor with subtle changes that change everything for the better. The passenger side dash now has an aluminium weave fibre-ish panel with an unsmooth brushed aluminium finish with Quattro written in bold letters replacing the old wooden panel. The chrome inlays around the dash have been

now replaced with less blingy brushed aluminium inlays which improve the overall look of the interior immensely. Feature wise the new Q3 will spoil you with things like LED interior lights, power adjusted seats, Audi MMI Navigation System and parking sensors with rear view camera integrated with the banging Audi Sound System, infotainment system which includes Audi music interface, 20GB Jukebox, 2 SD card slots and Bluetooth. infotainment system, there are 3 driving modes available to select from Comfort, Auto and Dynamic. And for the first time paddle shifters behind the steering wheel get a sportier shifting feel. So my first impressions of driving a Q3, or the first time an SUV from Audi, what was it like? Well for starters, I set off with the car in comfort, all things set to lazy pot belly man mode and tried it out for a few kilometres. Let’s talk about the suspension, in Goa, you don’t find many pot holed roads but you can find quite a bit of rocky rough stuff to try out the suspension and the all wheel drive system. In comfort, the car is so

softly sprung, though my eyes told me that there is a pot hole, my bottom begged to differ. Speed breakers do nothing to unsettle the car even at around 30-40kmph; the chassis has been tuned for a better ride and it shows. The steering input and the throttle are a bit lazy and so is the transmission, but it’s a small SUV not a sports saloon. It’s meant to be a little lazy, though anything above 3000rpm, all the sluggishness is thrown out of the window. In Dynamic mode however, from the get go, the sluggishness is reduced significantly; the ride stiffens up, but is still massively comfortable. Shove the transmission into ‘S’

and this little 2.0litre diesel takes off like a rocket. The acceleration from a standstill to 100kmph is 8.2 seconds, on the move if you press the right buttons; it feels a lot like 4-5 seconds. The steering in twisty windy roads feels so agile and nimble in dynamic and when you need the power, it’s almost always there. If you need it a little bit quicker than what the onboard computer feels, just a flip down shift with the paddles and you’re good to go. I would have liked the paddles to be slightly pushed outwards so I don’t have to reach back behind the steering wheel every time I want to change gear bit that’s just being silly. Auto mode is quite a smart chap, if you want the power, it’s there, if you want a slimy suspension, it’s there. I would also like to mention
that I hate electric power steering because of the lack of any amount of feedback but the electronic steering wheel in the Q3 surprisingly good, I actually quite liked it, it wasn’t too much wooden as other EPAS systems that you get from other cars, there is enough feedback to give confidence the driver needs while driving on and off road. Attention to detail is everywhere around the car with tiny little things that matter a lot. The boot is giant, the rear seats are comfortable, leg room is decent even with the front
seats halfway back. There are tiny little hooks in the boot and in the front foot well. It also comes with six airbags in case you encounter any of the many lunatics on Indian roads. The Q3 is priced at 28.99 lakh onward. At that price level, for the kit you get and the drivability, the overall package is just perfect.

CELERIO DIESEL ZDI
LASTING FUN T Report: P.THARYAN / Photography: MOHD. NASIR
his country really loves a diesel car. Every kilometer driven is a saving of sorts for them because of the lower price of diesel fuel as compared to petrol. For Maruti Suzuki it’s also a matter of pride when it comes to this new DDiS 125 2-cylinder 800 cc diesel engine that is at the heart of the Celerio car. For a long time they have been relying on Fiat for their diesel engine, now they have made one all by themselves. It’s the first diesel engine designed and developed by Suzuki Motor Corporation. So when I got the keys to the new Celerio diesel I was curious as to how smart the boys at Maruti Suzuki are when it comes to making a diesel engine. The moment you tweak the engine to life, you are kind of surprised by the sound from the diesel engine. It reminds you of the scooter you once owned or a Nano you once drove. It’s not the sound of authority. But then as they say, calm waters run deep. We had decided to do the shoot of the car on a Sunday morning. I was up by 4 am and I had to reach the designated spot by 5.30, because that is the time when the summer sun shows its friendly face to you for a wee bit of time. An hour later, the same sun, begins to roast you alive!
In terms of comfort and other practical offerings that Celerio has, the company has got it just right. MARUTI SUZUKI is claiming that this car offers 27.62 kmpl in certain test conditions, which makes it India’s most fuel efficient car. 26 I July 2015

Coming back to the 4.30 am drive to the 20km away spot for the shoot, the roads were almost empty and the stray cows and dogs were presumably cuddled up in some dirty corners of the streets. That, in short, meant I had a race track all to myself. The moment I floored the accelerator pedal, the car zipped, and before long I had touched the 100kmph speed. In fact you really do not know when the turbo kicks in. It’s all zip, zap, zoom. It was as if the car was coaxing me to drive faster. But then it’s also time for a lot of good sense to take control of your emotions. I eased off the pedal and brought the speed to a sensible and legal 60kmph. I was convinced that the car could do a lot more, given the right roads. Yes, I am impressed by this diesel engine. You cannot expect a two-cylinder engine to sound like a V8. It’s an impossible task. It’s like asking all the well-fed obese Editors of all auto magazines to run the 100 metres in less than 1 minute! After the race there would be a spate of obituaries! The sound of the diesel engine may be a bit harsh for those standing outside but once you are inside in the confines of the air-conditioned Celerio, you don’t hear a thing and all you do is to enjoy the drive to your hilt. I got the top end version of the car for a drive (ZDi) and since it’s a loaded car with more than a handful of features, you cannot be complaining at all. In terms of comfort and other practical offerings that this car has, the
28 I July 2015
company has got it just right. Maruti Suzuki is claiming that this car offers 27.62 kmpl in certain test conditions, which makes it India’s most fuel efficient car. As for the engine, the moment the Celerio diesel car was launched, it marked the global launch of DDiS 125. The Celerio petrol, one must remember was launched early 2014 and since then has sold almost 1 lakh units. A good proportion of these are cars fitted with Auto Gear Shift. The company also informs that Maruti Suzuki and its suppliers have together invested over 900 crore towards development of DDiS 125 and it comes with
over 97pc localisation. So what is this diesel engine all about? The DDiS 125 is compact and light weight and the cylinder block is all aluminium. DDiS 125 comes with a compact fuel distribution system and a turbocharger suited to a 2-cylinder engine. The company claims that by decreasing compression ratio and installing a
WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
large intercooler it has combined high torque in low RPM and fuel efficiency. Minimising friction, improving thermal efficiency, adopting low viscosity lubricants have also helped enhance the fuel efficiency in DDiS 125, the company explains. It is this compact turbocharger with intercooler that delivers a quick acceleration and smooth drive. The hydraulic clutch system only makes it easy for you when you shift gears. On the looks front, well it’s the same old beautiful Celerio, with the
right curves at the right places. The company calls its styling design CICO Styling – ‘Curve in Curve Out’ styling. It’s meant to make the car appealing to the young. The cabin space is very adequate and again it has been designed so well that it can accommodate a small family along with loads of luggage. It also has an option of 60:40 split flexibility in the rear seats to increase luggage capacity. The small hatch also comes with features that enable you you to shuffle music tracks, adjust volume levels, answer and make calls without taking your hands off the wheel. That’s quite a bit of luxury packed into a small car. There is easy access to all controls with features like integrated audio with Bluetooth connectivity and steering mounted audio controls. The multiinfo panel displays information such as instantaneous fuel efficiency, average fuel efficiency, range, etc. I guess with all that you have got to be content with the Celerio diesel ZDi. It’s lasting fun with this car!

wake up to a dreamy Friday morning and for a moment I am struggling to understand why the blessed alarm is ringing at five in the morning. Then it hit me, I had to leave early to review the new 3rd generation Honda Jazz. Without another complaint I hop out of bed and am ready in a jiffy. Believe it or not I’ve been a huge fan of the Jazz ever since I first laid my eyes on it. When Honda launched the Jazz in India it was definitely ahead of its time and when I saw the next generation of the Jazz, the first thought that crossed my mind was “this is perfect”. At first sight the Honda Jazz is a hatch to fall in love with, the smooth flowing lines, the aerodynamic design, the subtle chrome finishing will woo your senses. Many aspects of the Jazz are still quite futuristic and give the car a distinct identity. Honda has used a combination of sporty aggressive lines and an elegant design philosophy to make the Jazz a head turner. The rear features LED tail and stop lamps extend into the tailgate, while the front has new edgy looking headlamps which resemble the ones on the new Honda City. The new front grill adds a touch of class with a single wing shaped plate in high gloss finish bearing the Honda logo. On the inside the Jazz is quite like its other siblings and now boasts of more space. While the new Jazz has the same height and width as the previous version of the car, the length has increased by 55mm and the wheel base length has gone up by 30mm. All of this has resulted in a substantial increase in space. While front shoulder room has gone up by 35mm, the overall cabin volume has gone up by 139 litres. Rear tandem distance has increased by 80mm, knee clearance has gone up by 65mm and the overall rear legroom has increased by 115mm. Well all of this has been achieved without compromising boot space which stands at 354 litres.

At first sight the HONDA JAZZ is a hatch to fall in love with, the smooth flowing lines, the aerodynamic design, the subtle chrome finishing will woo your senses. The new Jazz will be available with two different engine options, a 1.2L Petrol and a 1.5L Diesel. While the petrol engine is available with a 5-speed manual or a CVT automatic, the diesel version is available with a 6-speed manual transmission. The gear shifts are seamless and a smooth flow of power reminds you of Honda’s engineering excellence. The 1.2L petrol produces 88.8 bhp@6000 rpm and churns out 110 Nm of torque @4800 rpm. The petrol motor is smooth and zippy from the word go and is ideal for city driving conditions. The 1.5L diesel motor produces 98.6 bhp@3600 rpm and 200 Nm of torque @2000 rpm. While the petrol motor is as silent as a winter night in the North Pole, the diesel motor is a tad bit noisy but then again which diesel motor isn’t. In terms of performance the diesel motor is slightly better than average and

the turbo kicks in anywhere north of 2500rpm. But once you get to higher gears it’s all smooth sailing. The major influencer for me to lean towards the diesel motor is economy. The 1.5L diesel engine returns 27.3kmpl while the petrol manual returns 18.7kmpl and the CVT automatic returns 19kmpl. The Jazz is now 3955mm long while the wheelbase measures
2530mm. The ground clearance is 165mm, which is better than before and potholes or abnormally large speed breakers should not be an issue any longer. The suspension provides for a very smooth and comfortable ride. In terms of handling, the Jazz feels planted to the road even at speeds in excess of 120kmph. The 175/65 R15 tyres provide phenomenal
WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
grip on tarmac and driving on the ‘twisties’ of the Western Ghats was a treat. The steering is mildly stiff but loosens up as you gain speed and you will never feel the need to over steer. The new Jazz is equipped with a sophisticated touch screen air
condition control, 5 inch audio entertainment system monitor which also doubles up as a parking camera with 3 different viewing modes, internally adjustable and foldable ORVMs, Eco Assist light in the speedo-meter to display economical driving patterns, USB and AUX input slots, Bluetooth connectivity and many smartly placed cubby
holes and cup holders. The top spec of the Jazz also comes with Honda’s new Magic Seats which can be adjusted in 4 different modes i.e. Tall, Long, Utility and Refresh to increase storage space and convenience of transporting goods. The Jazz is a global car, it has not necessarily been designed for the Indian market but yes the 1.5
litre Diesel version has specifically been brought in for the Indian consumer. Fitting perfectly in its segment, the Jazz definitely has what it takes to impress buyers and should be a worthy contender for the ever competitive premium hatch back segment. We expect the Jazz to be priced somewhere around 6,00,000 (ex-showroom Delhi).

t’s a hot and humid day. A light breeze is ruffling the long blades of grass. Slowly edging towards its prey, the cheetah inches forward. Its heart is racing because it hasn’t fed in days. The time has come for it to conquer, this time it has to be crowned king. When the people at Mahindra decided to roll-up their sleeves and give the XUV 5OO a makeover, they had one single vision in mind – the crown. Surviving in the jungle would seem easier than winning in the SUV segment of the Indian market. While XUV 5OO was never short of being the best, it did not win the crown. But the new age XUV 5OO has all it takes to win and win big! We took the face-lifted XUV 5OO for a review on the outskirts of Delhi. We knew the terrain and it would rival the African Savannah. We were taking the cheetah home or at least what home was meant to be. Gearing up for an afternoon filled with offroad adventure is something I look forward to with ardour. The mild fear of uncertainty and the thrill of adventures to come take hold of me. While on tarmac the XUV was agile, it sprinted through the gears with ease and I never broke a sweat driving in traffic or on the highway. However the real test began when we took the cheetah off road. The terrain was unforgiving and a slight mistake would mean being stuck in the jungle for hours. I guess it would be my luck that I was driving the W10 variant of the XUV. The top end W10 version has been packed with all sorts of driver aids. It comes with ABS & EBD, Hill Descent Control, Hill Hold Control, Tyretronics and ESP with roll over mitigation. All of those proved very handy with every feature kicking in just when it was required. At first I was a bit nervous taking on a few obstacles but the AWD (All Wheel Drive) XUV 5OO was at home and at par with the elements thrown its way. The independent suspension system worked beautifully even on rough stretches of grass land and pothole laden roads. The 235/65 R17 tubeless tyres were quite handy when it came to a few high speed stints on the open grass lands. The tyres gripped

the ground well and the ESP kicked in every time I would over steer. The W10 variant also has a roll over mitigation programme with the ESP. Thus every time the ESP sensors would detect an anomaly in the vehicles movement patterns it will break individual wheels and reduce the driving torque to prevent a roll over. At the heart of the XUV is a mighty 2179cc mHawk140 diesel motor. It produces 140bhp @ 3750rpm and churns out a massive 330Nm @ 1600-2800rpm. In layman’s terms the XUV is quick despite its size and weight. The vehicle can go from 0-60kpmh in a matter of 5.4 seconds. The 5th generation VGT is quite refined giving an almost uninterrupted flow of power. The 6-speed synchromesh manual transmission is smooth to say the least and gears fall seamlessly into place. While on tarmac the disc and calliper type brakes are efficient and any previous braking issues have been resolved. The independent suspension with anti-roll bars in the front and rear facilitate a smooth ride and minimise body roll. Like the cheetah, the XUV is not only fast but agile as well. It is quick through the corners and handles well at high speeds. The ESP ensures adequate traction and a stable ride. The fun doesn’t stop there, the XUV is packed with many more

This is one vehicle which will never leave you wanting for more and dares you to take the road less travelled. Packed with a host of handy features it also offers butch style and a brawny engine. VOLVO S60 R-DESIGN
UPTOWN STAR S
Report : RAHUL KAPOOR / Photography: MOHD. NASIR
porty and luxurious sedans in India have always been synonymous with a place in Europe called Germany. The names of the big three – Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi ----are the ones that come to the minds of the Indian population when it comes to luxury saloons. What if I were to tell you there is another place besides Germany? Sporty, luxury sedans don’t always have to be German. I’m sure most of you would be scratching your heads right now.
38 I July 2015
Yes, we have always wanted to bring you something from Sweden. I am talking about the new Volvo S60 R-Design. In India, people are slowly getting to know more about Volvo cars, and the ones who do have only one opinion of it. “It’s a great car, it’s the safest car” and that’s it. This has been quite a problem for Volvo in India where “Safest Car” isn’t interesting in anyway. So what has Volvo done to fix that problem? For starters, they fiddled with the styling of an already strikingly pretty car and made it even more sport like. And then they added the letter R in the name
which everyone knows makes everything faster. Under the bonnet, Volvo has thrown out its old 5 cylinder diesel engine and screwed in a humble 2.0 litre, 4 cylinder Drive-E diesel engine which send 181bhp and 400Nm of torque to the front wheels through a new 8-speed automatic gearbox. So is it any good? Is it really worthy of an R? How about I start by saying the new D4 engine is a peach to drive and the new 8 speed transmission is so immediate on the up shift and even on the down. If you thought all diesels sound like canal boats, try the sound
WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
track of the S60 R, it’s like a collection of greatest hits from a progressive rock album when you play all the songs together---the songs align perfectly all because the engine ignition firing sequence is 1-3-4-2 which makes a massive gurgle of sound as you drive along. The only problem was that if you wanted to turn the traction control off, you’d have to go through the entire car settings menu to do it. The throttle response in normal mode is a bit sluggish, but there are no comfort or sport modes to choose from. It’s a simple “it is what it is” kind of car. However, you can be all sport by pushing the gear lever into ‘S’ and that changes everything. It’s a different animal in ‘S’. The throttle becomes more alert, the transmission shifts quicker with every flick of the paddle, the engine becomes more louder and the steering gets even heavier despite its already perfect weight and you can really feel the road in your hands. Despite the fact that the competition is floating around with RWD cars, the Volvo sends 181bhp all to the front wheels and yet there just isn’t any kind of understeer unless you get to about 150kmph, but where do you drive at 150kmph on Indian streets? Pfft!
Engine & Transmission 2.0 Litre 4 cylinder turbocharged Drive-E D4204T5 DOHC / 8-speed Geartronic automatic
The exterior of the S60 R gets subtle changes from the standard ones. The front bumper is slightly different with a mesh airdam instead of slats, and there is a newly designed fog lamp assembly. The rear only gets a subtle appearance but a massive visual upgrade with a new diffuser and mufflers which makes the car even more bold and striking to the eye. The interior hasn’t changed at all apart from a few buttons from the standard car and that is a really a good thing. The seats are extremely comfortable and the leather and interior materials used have also been tested for allergies. Who does that in this world these days? The instrument cluster hasn’t changed and I did feel earlier that it was a bit overwhelming. Once you get used to it, there is no turning back. To sum it all up, for 40 Lakh, you could get yourself a German made sedan, and be a part of the Tom, Dick and Harry clan, or go for the S60 R and dazzle people as you drive along. Why go for the S60? The exclusivity factor is one definite reason. To top it all off, when someone asks you what car you drive and you say “Volvo”, it’s something that will make you feel really proud.

R E N R U T HEAD SUZUKI GIXXER SF
W
Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER / Photography: MOHD. NASIR
e first reviewed the Suzuki Gixxer on a rainy August day last year. The bike did not fail to impress us. The Gixxer had a

unique styling, an edgy design and a rev happy 155cc motor. We were quite certain that it would do well. Ten months have passed since then and to my luck, again on a wet June morning I got to ride the Gixxer’s evil twin, the Suzuki Gixxer SF. It would seem that
Suzuki is breeding monsters in its stable. Well if you don’t consider the Hayabusa a monster, you need to start! Even the smallest from the stables of Suzuki are mean machines. While riding the SF, I could not fail to notice that this bike
has been built to perform like a race bike, look like a race bike and handle like a race bike. The lineages of motorcycle from which many aspects of the Gixxer SF have been derived are all award winning bikes. However, this is not a bike for the track, it is meant for

The Gixxer SF is undeniably one of the better looking bikes in the premium 150cc segment. This fully faired version of the Gixxer will dazzle you with its aerodynamic design and stance. While Suzuki has claimed that this bike has been tested in the same wind tunnel as the
Hayabusa, the Gixxer SF is a more for show motorcycle. You have the same swept back headlight design as on the naked version of the bike. The fairings give the bike a bulkier look and the neatly sculpted air ducts are positioned well. The Gixxer SF has a new edgy looking aluminium dual-tip exhaust cover while the single seat, rider position, fuel tank, LED tail light are the
same as the naked Gixxer, however the SF has a sportier appeal to it. The Gixxer SF has the same 155cc 4-stroke petrol engine as on the naked version of the bike. This peppy engine will produce 14.6bhp at 8000rpm and churn out 14Nm of torque at 6000rpm. Gixxer SF is fast for its category of motorcycle reaching a top speed of 127kmph> The bike
handles well on curbs and bends. It may not be meant for a race track but if put to a corner the bike will follow it through seamlessly. Like the naked Gixxer the SF has 100/80 R17 tubeless tyres in the front and 140/60 R17 tubeless tyres in the rear which provide for ample grip on tarmac. The 5-speed manual transmission does its job smoothly

and the grunt from the dual-tip exhaust is pleasing. The SF is 4kgs heavier than the naked Gixxer but it performs equally well. The bike also comes with a 7-way adjustable rear mono shocker to make the ride smoother as per your needs. The SF returns approximately 47 km to the litre and the fuel tank can hold up to 12 litres. The bike is available in Glass Sparkle Black, Pearl Mirage White and a special Moto GP edition in Metallic Triton Blue. While the standard versions of the bike cost 92,596 (On-Road Delhi) the Moto GP edition costs 94,238 (On-Road Delhi). The price for this bike is a bit steep but it is worth every bit of money you are spending. The SF will thrill you and on lookers as well. It handles like a dream and for its segment of motorcycle is quite light and zippy. The fairings prove to be an added advantage while cruising on highways and the overall appeal of this bike is quite impressive. Definitely a head turner!

way from the hustle and bustle of Pune, Mahabaleshwar’s first five star resort is set in the heart of the Western Ghats in Maharashtra, an unexplored location. halaivar Rajnikant is a super hero in the Tamil celluloid world. Songs have been sung in his praise with even King Khan paying him a tribute in a Hindi song. In South India, Rajnikant continues to be a force to reckon with. In Bollywood he is very much adored. Globally too he is quite a respected figure. And the same goes with Tamil Nadu, the state he represents, when it comes to the world of automobiles. Five states comprising Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and the newly formed state of Telangana make up South India. Among these, it’s Tamil Nadu that is way ahead when it comes to its contribution to the Indian automobile industry. Automotive hubs can only be successful when vehicle manufacturers set up manufacturing plants in the region. When these Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) set up base, they attract an entire family of component manufacturers to the site. Vendor parks come up and so do component manufacturers of all shapes and sizes. Tier I, II and III suppliers flock around the huge vehicle manufacturing sites to supply not just to the OEMs in the vicinity but also to their markets abroad. Vehicle manufacturing regions also encourage the growth of technical institutions and engineering colleges, providing employment opportunities to the students passing out from these institutions. Business only tends to get better for the region, promoting the overall welfare of the region and its people. But it all starts with the state government providing the right infrastructure and fiscal incentives for automobile companies to set up base in their State. Among the southern States, Tamil Nadu has got a major lead when it comes to attracting automobile manufacturers to its state. Some of the biggest names of Indian and global automotive space like Hyundai Motor India, Ford India,

TVS Group, Royal Enfield, Allison Transmission, India Yamaha, BMW India, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles Pvt. Ltd. (DICV), a 100% wholly owned subsidiary of Daimler AG, Mitsubishi (using the manufacturing plant of Hindustan Motors), Renault-Nissan plant, Ashok Leyland, TAFE, Caterpillar India, Wabco India, Wheels India, Federal Mogul, Rane Ltd, Visteon, Takata, BorgWarner Thermal Systems, Ennore Foundries, etc. The list is exhaustive. Tamil Nadu also has the presence of major tyre manufacturers like Apollo Tyres (in Oragadam) and MRF (in Arakkonam, Tiruvottiyur). Tamil Nadu is undoubtedly the Detroit of India. Given the fresh investments being made in the state, the State is expected to continue with its “Detroit” status for a very long time to come. A major part of automotive research and development all over the world comes from motorsport. In India, Tamil Nadu has been the state where the sport has the most amount of presence despite the Formula 1 track being constructed in North India. The most successful racing drivers in India have come from Tamil Nadu like Narain Karthikeyan, Karun Chandok, Alisha Abdulla, and many more. The reason is simple: The frequency of racing and rally events is higher in South India. Two of the most popular racing circuits with the most amount of heritage, the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore and the recently renovated and renamed Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai, both are in Tamil Nadu. The race track in Chennai after its renovation has received the FIA Grade 2 certificate which allows the track to host events up to World Endurance Racing, DTM and GT Racing levels. Volkswagen, JK Tyre, MRF all of these brands have had racing series in India and at least one race in every category takes place in one of these tracks. The VW Vento Cup this year will host two races in Kari Motor Speedway along with the JK Tyre National Racing Championships.
MRF Racing also has their own facility and racetrack with a simulator in Tamil Nadu and also host events in the region. With the T1 Tata Prima Truck Racing Championships concluding the 2nd season in India, Tata Motors is also planning to host the event at the Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai for an additional round possibly from next year while also hosting a race at the Buddh International Circuit in Noida. Suzuki with the launch of their fully faired street sports bike the Gixxer SF, has also announced to host the Gixxer cup, a one make racing series with their Gixxer SF model which is held in conjunction with the Indian National Motorcycle Racing Championship at the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore and the Madras Motor Race Track in Chennai. The first round of the series has already been concluded at Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore It is thus obvious that apart from automotive manufacturing, even when it comes to motorsport, Tamil Nadu steals the show. With its race tracks and rich legacy in motorsport, there is no comparison to this southern state of India. It’s only fair to say that Tamil Nadu never misses a chance!
TAMIL NADU Among the southern states of India, only Tamil Nadu has an elaborate policy on Automobiles and Auto Components. According to the Tamil Nadu Automobile and Auto Components Policy 2014, traditionally, Tamil Nadu is known for automobile manufacturing. Since 1953, when Simpsons pioneered India’s automobile industry in Chennai with the manufacture of motor cars, diesel engines and steam passenger buses, the industry has grown steadily. A number of automobile and auto components manufacturing plants have been established since then earning
Chennai the sobriquet the “Detroit of India”. Some say the automotive investment wave is waning in Tamil Nadu, but the fact is that a few states like Gujarat and Telangana and a few others have only recently woken up to the automotive world, seeking investments. Tamil Nadu continues to get fresh investments from automotive players even today. Players like BMW India, Force Motors, India Yamaha. Royal Enfield and DICV, to name a few, continue to make fresh investments in the state. India Yamaha has also set up a new plant on the outskirts of Chennai which will be commissioned in 2015. The plant has come up at Vallam Vadagal in Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu. An investment of 1,500 crore went into building this plant with a capacity to manufacture 4,00,000 units. In Phase II the capacity will be further augmented to 14,00,000 units, taking the total capacity of the company to 18,00,000 units. The new factory will also have a vendor park in its vicinity. Meanwhile, all eyes are on the new product from the TVS-BMW collaboration to be launched in 2015-16 fiscal. The under-500 cc motorcycle is expected to add a new element of thrill in a segment where there are limited models and players. When the BMW-TVS tie up was announced early 2013, it was meant to develop and produce motorcycles in the segment below 500 cubic centimetres.
The cooperation agreement involved the two companies offering their own vehicle derivatives, which
SOUTH INDIA SPECIAL was to be sold through their own distribution channels in India and across the globe. These BMW engineered bikes will be produced in all probability from TVS’s Hosur plant. Royal Enfield, in the meantime, continues to ramp up capacity at its current facilities in Thiruvottiyur and Oragadam in Tamil Nadu. The company had acquired 50 acres of land in Vallam Vadagal, near Chennai to set up its third manufacturing facility. This plot is located within 10 km of the company’s Oragadam facility and according to Siddhartha Lal, Eicher Motors MD and CEO, the company would commence capacity creation at the third plant “as and when we have a sight of demand that is beyond the combined capacity of our existing two facilities. Our plan is to reach a capacity of 4,50,000 units in 2015 and over 6,00,000 in 2016 from current manufacturing facilities in Thiruvottiyur and Oragadam.” Royal Enfield’s current capacity from both plants (Thiruvottiyur and Oragadam) will be three lakh units for 2015. Eventually, the two plants put together will be able to manufacture six lakh units. The Oragadam facility has a total
capacity of five lakh motorcycles a year. The company invested 150 crore in the first phase, when it was inaugurated in 2013. In addition to capacity expansion, the company is also investing in upgrading its capabilities in product development with two new technology centres on the anvil. The larger one will be at a new 4.5 acre property that the company has acquired on Old Mahabalipuram Road in Chennai, andwill be operational by Q2 2016. Isuzu Motors India Private Limited (IMI), a subsidiary of Isuzu Motors Limited, Japan, was established in August 2012 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Headquartered in Chennai, Isuzu currently has a contract manufacturing agreement with Hindustan Motors (HML) under which HML is assembling CKD kits of Isuzu’s Sports Utility Vehicle MU-7 and pick-up truck D-Max, at its Thiruvallur, Chennai plant. The company is, however, setting up its own plant in SriCity, TADA, Chitoor District, Andhra Pradesh. Tamil Nadu also has the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) established in Avadi to produce military related vehicles. Avadi also boasts of the Combat Vehicle Research & Development Establishment (CVRDE), a new engine testing facility.

Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi, Chennai is one of the 40 Ordnance Factories under Ordnance Factory Board of Ministry of Defence and is located at the outskirts of Chennai. This factory has been at the forefront of battle tank manufacturing in the country. According to a Tamil Nadu government note, during the 1990s and early 2000s, the State witnessed the second wave of the “automobile boom”. Currently, there are six car manufacturers located around Chennai including Ford, Hyundai, Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi and BMW. The total capacity of these six car projects is 13.80 lakhs units per year. Chennai is now emerging as one of the Top 10 Global Automobile Manufacturing centres, says the state government note. Tamil Nadu has the largest auto components industry base and accounts for 35pc of India’s auto components production (US$ 6.2 billion). The industry, over the years, developed the capability of manufacturing all the components required for manufacturing vehicles, which is evident from the high levels of indigenisation achieved in the vehicle industry as well as the components developed for the completely Indian made vehicles. Three Chennai based industrial groups make more than 22pc of India’s auto components production. With an existing
tyre manufacturing facility and commissioning of production by three larger tyre manufacturing projects, Tamil Nadu, and Chennai in particular, has become one of the largest hubs in the world for tyre manufacturing. CORE STRENGTHS Tamil Nadu has three modern ports in Chennai and one in Tuticorin which provide an easy gateway for exports and imports. The Chennai and Ennore Ports have dedicated berths for automobile exports. Apart from a steady flow of skilled manpower, Chennai has over 350 Tier I to III suppliers, besides more than 4000 SMEs under Tier IV segment. All mother vehicle projects also have dedicated Vendors Parks next to them. NATRiP, a Government of India project established in Oragadam near Chennai with a test track will be facilitating introduction of world-class automotive safety, emission and performance standards in India and also ensure seamless integration of Indian automotive components industry

buses are still operating without any major transmission-related issues. In short, not only did DTC drivers benefit, but so did the passengers who have commuted safely and comfortably in these buses. For many years automatic transmissions have been the standard for buses in Europe and North America. Over the past decade, many countries including Japan, China and Turkey have embraced fully-automatic solutions. This trend continues around the world as developing countries are moving toward fully-automatic technology in city buses. Allison Transmission has not only been delivering modernity to India’s commercial vehicle segment, but has also been exporting products manufactured in its plant in the southern State of Tamil Nadu.
Allison Transmission India’s facility located in Oragadam’s industrial belt near Chennai, has been manufacturing high-precision drivetrain components for more than 5 years. The Chennai plant is utilized to assemble transmissions and produce gears which are also used in other Allison production facilities. It has major certifications like ISO/TS 16949:2009, ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001-2004 and OHSAS 18001-2007. Recently the company shipped its 10,000th transmission from its Chennai facility, thereby illustrating its ‘Make in India’ initiative. Allison works with more than 300 OEMs globally, including industry leaders in India, such as Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Corona, MAN, Sutlej, JCBL, JBM, Veera and BEML. In 2013, the Chennai facility started producing 1000 Series
and 2000 Series transmissions, demonstrating the ability to meet Allison’s global best-inclass manufacturing practices. In addition to meeting the demands of Indian OEMs, these transmissions are also exported to support the needs of some other Asian markets, further contributing to the intent of the ‘Make in India’ program. Allison transmissions produced in India are making their way around the world. In fact some Indian OEMs are now exporting Allison-equipped buses to Africa and the Middle East – a preferred transmission choice due to a well-earned reputation for reliability, durability and customer support. The Allison Transmission Chennai Plant is a state of the art modern assembly and production facility. In addition, it houses both a Customisation Centre and
SOUTH INDIA SPECIAL Parts Distribution Centre. The Tamil Nadu location has many advantages such as availability of skilled manpower, a good work ethic, manufacturing culture and a general reputation to produce quality products. It has excellent and efficient port logistics which are key to any successful Export Oriented Unit (EOU). The State also has a mature industrial base and is a leader in automobiles & components.
A LONG JOURNEY During 2015, Allison Transmission celebrates its centennial, tracing its corporate lineage back to James Allison and his founding of the company back in 1915. Allison has been serving customers in India for over 50 years, supporting mining and oil field industries through Allison Authorized Dealers and Distributors established back in the 1960s. Around the turn of the millennia, Allison began
developing Indian onhighway market segments, by demonstrating the benefits of a fully-automatic in a variety of commercial vehicles applications. In India today, Allison transmissions can be found in city buses, coaches, trucks, oil field and mining segments, providing distinct advantages in any duty cycle. After considerable success in rear-engine CNG low-floor buses in Delhi and other cities, Allison and TATA recently launched the first automatic-equipped front-engine bus. Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited (AJL) took delivery of over 120 TATA 1621 front-engine buses in December 2014, spurring even greater demand for automatics in this segment. Both TATA and BEML now offer an Allison Automatic in their

respective tipper and mining dump trucks. Customers are now choosing Allison in these types of severe service trucks to significantly improve productivity and profitability. Allison recently made its entry into the Indian fire and emergency sector, equipping an MAN vehicle. Emergency vehicles need
to demonstrate high levels of responsiveness and performance, as they are required to reach their respective destinations as quickly as possible. Allison transmissions have been shown to get to the fire in less time by delivering up to 35pc faster acceleration and greater maneuverability when compared with a manual or AMT.
Interview with P. Vijayaraghavan, Director, TVS Srichakra Ltd TVS Srichakra Limited, a part of the TVS Group, the largest auto ancillary group in India, with a group turnover of over USD 8 billion, is the leading manufacturer of Two & Three Wheeler tyres and Off-Road tyres. Incorporated in 1982, the company manufactures and markets its products under the ‘TVS Tyres’ and ‘Eurogrip’ brands. The company rolls out around 1.9 million tyres every month out of its two units located in Madurai (Tamil Nadu) and Pantnagar (Uttarakhand).
Earlier this year, your company TVS Srichakra unveiled its new brand identity with the mnemonic ‘Eagle’. Are you trying to send across a message to the world around you, especially to the consumers in India and abroad?
While creating a new brand identity, we had to make sure that we integrate a feeling of dynamism and youthfulness to convey that our products can overcome any challenge in a journey. The new logo, as a result, is sleeker and bolder, conveying strength, speed and dynamism. As a youngest tyre company in the country, we are happy to have launched this new logo and embark on this new journey. TVS Srichakra is a leading manufacturer of Two & Three Wheeler tyres and Off-Road tyres and you have plants in Madurai (Tamil Nadu) and Pantnagar (Uttarakhand). What are the production capacities of the two plants and is it sufficient to meet your immediate future demands? In 2013-14, we made 1.7 million
tyres per month in Two & Three Wheeler segment and pushed it up to 2 million tyres per month in 2014-15. We have initiated an expansion in our capacity, to reach 2.3 million tyres per month by December 2015. How much of your total revenues come from exports and have you in the past one year found new markets for exports? Again, is there a huge scope for exporting both 2/3 wheeler tyres as well as off road tyres globally? Also, what is the share in the OEM and aftermarket segments? We export Off-Road tyres to more than 80 countries, branded as ‘ TVS EUROGRIP ‘, which include Industrial Pneumatics tyres, Skid Steer tyres, Multi Purpose tyres, Flotation tyres, Construction tyres, Tractor tyres, etc. Around 13pc of our total turnover comes
in exports. In Off-Road tyres, our main market is Europe and USA as well as Middle East, etc. We are also increasing our exports in Two / Three Wheeler tyres to South America, South East Asia and Africa. With increasing exports of Two Wheelers from India, we have greater opportunities to expand our exports in Two & Three Wheeler tyres segment. Are tubeless tyres making a stronger presence in the Indian markets? Is the technology here evolving? The Indian Two Wheeler industry is seeing rapid modernisation in the vehicles as well as in tyres. With increasing exports by the Two Wheeler manufacturers to global market place, vehicles are getting upgraded to a much superior technology. In tyres, from Tube Type, we are seeing

a quick change to Tubeless tyres. Most of the vehicle manufacturers roll out their new models with Tubeless tyres. We are also seeing Radial Motorcycle tyres coming in. In Off-Road segment, TVS Srichakra has got into Tractor Radial tyres for European market, to begin with. Talking of technology, can you throw some light on your R&D set up and how critical it is for the company? We have an excellent Inhouse R&D setup, with Tyre Technologists and Tyre Engineers designing and developing newer generation tyres. We have Design Centre, well equipped Laboratories and our own Test Track in the plant for constant Road Testing of tyres. We have test drivers, who also commute 500 kms every day testing our tyres. We have support from consultants who have been experts in the tyre field, from Europe & Japan and USA, helping us in various facets of tyre development and testing. Since you are the largest supplier to 2/3 wheeler industry in India, how do you feel their demand will pan for the current fiscal, especially with news that rains could falter and thereby affect demand for two wheelers in rural areas? Also do you see the growth of the scooter market as a major respite of sorts, because scooters are generally in the urban domain? We expect the Two Wheeler industry to grow by 7% to 8% this year. Though there is a drop in the growth as compared to the last three years, when
60 I July 2015
P. Vijayaraghavan we witnessed a big double digit growth, I do see an increase in numbers in 2015-16. The growth in scooter segment will be higher as compared to motorcycle segment. For a long time petroleum prices have been plummeting but now they seem to be firming up. And with a possibly scanty rainfall, how do you foresee the prices of your raw materials affecting your bottom lines of the company? We have seen Natural Rubber price being steady, but we do expect an increase in the prices of Synthetic Rubbers, Carbon Black and Rubber Chemicals, by the end of the year. Some time back there were frequent demands from the tyre industry to stop dumping of tyres from countries such as China? Has this issue been addressed completely? Are there any similar threats that
need to be addressed by the government now? ATMA has been playing an excellent role in bringing to the attention of the Government, on the import of cheap tyres from China, in particular in the Truck and Car segment. We have been pressing the Ministries on Anti-Dumping Duty including in Two Wheeler tyre segment. We are in constant touch with the Government in this regard. How successful has your company been on the radialisation front, with respect to the products you make and the demand for it, therein? We will be releasing our Radial Motorcycle tyres soon, having done the development and testing. We have already developed Tractor Radial tyres and have given quantities in the European market for initial usage. We have plans to expand our range.
Lastly, are there any plans to expand further, either through the organic route or through the inorganic route in the coming years? Is that an option you are considering? On the product front, do we see new products being launched this current fiscal? Any plans to enter the four-wheeler segment? We will be expanding consistently our output, in both Madurai and Rudrapur plants. We are not looking at any greenfield project now and would only be concentrating with expansion in our two existing plants. We launched 14 new products last year and, we have lot more newer products coming in during this financial year, both in Motorcycle and Scooter segments.

Interview with Philip Von Sahr, President, BMW Group India The BMW Plant Chennai started operations on March 29, 2007. The BMW Plant Chennai locally produces the BMW 1 Series, the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 7 Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5. Headquartered in Gurgaon (National Capital Region), BMW India is a 100 pc subsidiary of the BMW Group. Till date, BMW Group has invested over Rs 490 crore (€ 69 million) in BMW India. The wide range of BMW activities in India include a manufacturing plant in Chennai, a parts warehouse in Mumbai, a training centre in Gurgaon NCR and development of a dealer organisation across major metropolitan centres of the country. With 50pc localisation of your products, where does this put you from where you were to where you are now and what do you expect from the future? We increased the localisation by local production engines, gearbox, wiring harness, cooling modules and more with partners like Force Motors and so on. Since the month of January 2015, we now have a localisation of 50pc which was at a level of 20pc earlier. In the future we will absolutely go in the same direction with more localisation because the BMW philosophy is that “Production always follows the market”. The long term outlook for the Indian market is very positive, also for the premium market. That means, automatically that we invest more into the future to the plant in Chennai and also into localisation. Let’s talk about the engines from Force Motors. How have you developed the engine in partnership with Force Motors and how much input has come from BMW to make the engine up to BMW spec? It’s a cooperation with Force Motors. Force Motors is very experienced in producing engines for premium manufacturers so they know what the quality approach is. On the other side, we have our experts from the plant, the technology guys from ‘Sheer Driving Pleasure’. They met together with Force Motors and created a very fast and very positive development project starting last year so they had a lot to do. The result is that now we have a 2.0 lltre diesel engine which is a benchmark in its class
and the 3.0 litre diesel engine is also on its way so it’s all looks good. Is this venture with these suppliers a joint venture or just a supply chain? Are you forming a new company with any of the companies? At the moment it’s only a supply chain. We have this system all over the world. If you see of example, the first generation of the BMW X3 was produced outside the BMW production world and was a huge success. So of course we from the BMW Group ensure that the quality is right and the car meets the ‘Sheer Driving Pleasure’ measures in it. We have some really good partners in the production world who can produce these products
very efficiently while keeping the standards of top BMW quality. With localisation, how will the end consumer benefit from this? Can we also expect the prices to significantly drop for all localised cars in India? Indirectly yes. We will not decrease the price because of this. But if you see, India is an emerging market with a high inflation rate. Normally we have to increase the prices of our cars three to four times in a year. Now with the localised parts, we don’t have that pressure any more, increasing the prices one or two times will be sufficient. What’s been your experience with BMW India business since you came into the country??
When I started in September 2012, to be honest the premium market was in a lousy condition. Profitability for any of the manufacturers was not there, the prices were raised month, by moth, by month. There was high stocks and low contribution margins for the car. All the sales were pushed day by day in the newspapers with 2012 cars at 2011 prices or whatever. This was poison for the premium manufacturer. So we decided to go out of these ways and look for profitability by investing in our dealerships and making localisation investments. It’s only possible if you make a good business case all over. A customer has to pay a lot to buy a premium car in which he wants quality, with perfect service and
July 2015 I 61
COVER REPORT customer orientation and so we invested in dealerships. The 1 series hasn’t quite made its mark in India. In that segment, a sedan is what the buyers seem to prefer. Do you plan to close up the gap with a 2 series just to cover the segment? Of course we have a lot of models in the BMW line up that we don’t offer in the Indian market. On the other hand we offer eight different
SOUTH INDIA SPECIAL Chennai produced cars which is a lot more than our competitors. Like I said, when the premium market was not profitable, we obviously withdrew some models. You don’t need five different models, maybe two is enough. Also you have to look at every car, does it make business sense--Can we produce it here? Can we bring it? In the long term I see growth in the SUV market than in the sedan segment. Both are major markets for BMW in India, but the SUV
market I predict will be seeing more growth in comparison. You plan to launch 15 models this calendar year. Could you tell us which ones? We have already launched the i8 and the 6 Series Grand Coupe. We plan to launch the new X6, X6M, X5M, lifecycle improves of 3 series, 1 series, X1, M6 Grand Coupe, X5 M-sport version and some more. How much have you invested
into India and how much is more in the pipelines? Now we have invested a total of 4.9 billion Indian Rupees. Because India is an emerging market, I promise you we will invest further, but how much we don’t know yet. Are you also planning to expand your dealer network? We have a target to increase our dealer network by 15pc by the end of this year.
KARNATAKA Karnataka is India’s eighth largest State in terms of area and 9th largest State in terms of population. Some of the prominent cities in the state are Bengaluru, Mysore, Mangalore, Belgaum, Gulbarga, HubliDharwad, Shimoga, Kolar, Tumkur and Karwar. Not really an automotive biggie, this state is more of a major player in Information Technology (IT). The state is known as Silicon Valley of India. Primarily Karnataka has a TVS Motor plant in Mysore, a Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) plant in Narasapura and a Mahindra Reva plant in Bangalore. HMSI’s plant in Narsapuram in Karnataka’s Kolar district has a capacity of 1.8 million units. The State’s big ticket player is Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd. The company has two plants in Bidadi, near Bangalore. The total production capacity of the plants is 4,10,000 units annually. Equally prestigious are the production units of Scania Commercial Vehicles, Volvo Buses India, Tata Motors and TAFE. Bangalore. Today, the company has four manufacturing locations, Bangalore, Gurgaon, Manesar and Pune, located strategically in the automotive hubs of the country. With three automotive divisions, Interior, Powertrain and Chassis & Safety represented by 14 strong business units, each with an extensive product portfolio, Continental Automotive Components India develops and manufactures a wide range of electronic products in its Bangalore plant including engine management and power steering ECUs, immobilisers, body control modules and instrument clusters for all vehicle segments. It also manufactures actuation drum brakes, calipers, Powertrain and Chassis sensors, fuel supply modules and fuel rail assemblies in its other locations in India. In addition, the company supplies ABS, airbag electronics, pumps, injectors and sensors to its customers in India from its global plants. Hero MotoCorp was expected to set up a plant in Karnataka but the company has now preferred neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. The company has maintained that its fifth manufacturing plant, expected to be completed in 2016, is now coming up in Halol in Gujarat and the sixth plant will be in Andhra Pradesh. It had been negotiating with the Karnataka government to set up a facility in Dharwad.
Karnataka’s biggest story is the growth of Information Technology (IT) / Information Technology Enable Services (ITES) led sector which accounts for more than 40% of the India’s Software export. This growth has primarily occurred in Bangalore city and its environs though the industry has now begun moving towards other centers such as Mysore, Mangalore and Hubli-Dharwad. The State is home to major automotive industries such as Toyota Kirloskar, Volvo, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, TVS, Tata-Marco polo, L&T Komatsu, Mahindra Reva, Scania, Bosch, Siemens, JK Tyres etc. Triumph Motorcycle of the UK apparently bought a bit of land in the State but has put its plan in the state on the backburner. Among the latest commercial vehicle giants to enter Karnataka was Scania. The company inaugurated its first Industrial Facility housing Truck plant in Narasapura, Bangalore, in October, 2013. With an investment of Rs. 300 crore, this facility serves as the centre of the company’s commercial operations in the country. In the next phase Scania has inaugurated its Bus and Coach Plant in March 2015 to further expand Scania’s ambition in offering state of the art sustainable mobility solutions. The service workshop and a central parts warehouse, is
housed at the same site. Scania today has a capacity of 2500 trucks and 1000 buses and ambitions in the next 5 years to sell 5000 trucks and 2500 buses in the Indian market and employ more than 2000 people at these facilities. Scania also launched the company’s engines range in India.

Volvo Trucks achieves 10,000th sales mark Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER The Indian economy is expected to grow at a rate of 7pc in the years to come and the Indian mining and infrastructure sector has a major role to play in this growth. While many government bodies are working at full capacity to ensure targets are achieved the major contributors to growth are emerging from the private sector. In the mining and infrastructure industry Volvo Trucks has been at the centre of all the action and have successfully sold their 10,000th truck in India. The infrastructure and automobile sectors have received a renewed thrust and this will further create a demand for steel and power in the country. This in turn is expected to generate demand for minerals such as coal and iron ore. While Volvo has sold its 10,000th truck in India more than 70pc of these sales have been to the mining sector. In FY 2014-15 the approximate target for coal production in India was 630 million tonnes of which

NRI deposits in Kerala have now crossed the magic mark of 1 lakh crore, soaring by more than 17pc from 93,884 crore to 1.1 crore (at the end of 2014-15) in the space of just one year, according to data collected by the state level bankers committee (SLBC). This includes money from all parts of the world. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data shows that there was a little over $115 billion in NRI accounts in India, which is about 7 lakh crore. Kerala accounts for roughly a sixth of all the money deposited in NRI accounts. The company manufactures Three Wheelers (Diesel, Petrol & CNG) suitable for passengers and goods traffic in the brand name of “Kerala” and are considered as most Eco-

The state literally lives off remittances and it lacks a manufacturing base. According to the State’s Industrial & Commercial Policy Amended-2015, Kerala has to deal with the issues of preservation of environment while promoting
manufacturing and other heavy industries. Also, given its high population density and ecological sensitivity, Kerala can encourage only those sectors that are nonpolluting and eco-friendly. Kerala registered 8.24 per cent growth rate in MSME in 2012-13 and the major contribution was from service sector. The government is clear in its policy that it is keen to encourage growth of the Electronics Systems Design & Manufacturing Sector, besides, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Non-availability of large chunks of contiguous land and its high price are the major hurdles faced by the State in the implementation and execution of large industries. However, heavy industries like engineering industry, automobiles and their ancillaries, have potential because of good infrastructure availability like cheap and quality power, well developed road network, airports and seaports.
