eginning July 2016 issue of Motown India, we have introduced two new sections for our readers. One is “Bossman Speaks” wherein we shall be featuring top men and women in the automotive industry and shall be asking them a few questions. It’s always interesting

to hear the views of a top official of the industry. The first to be covered is Prasan Firodia, Managing Director of Force Motors. We caught up with him at the inauguration of his new engine plant for Mercedes-Benz India in Chakan, Pune in the state of Maharashtra. We have also introduced another section “Auto Stuff”. This section contains consumer products pertaining to the automotive world. It could be a new music system for your car, a new wheel cover or simply a watch or piece of furniture that has the essence of automotive in it. These products could be available anywhere in the world. Apart from this we have our regular news on road tests of cars and bikes. In the “Features” section we have an interesting report on motorcycle stunt riding. We caught up with a few stunt riders including the world famous Aras Gibieza, a European stunt champion who has been coming to India to perform on the behest of Red Bull. Then we have captured the views of Anam Hashim, India’s youngest female stunt rider. Besides this, we caught up with two local boys from Mototycoonz club of New Delhi, Bunty Godara and Manninder Singh. We realise it’s an extremely tough world out there in the world of motorcycle stunts. Last but not the least; we have an interesting report on the Indian tyre industry. It is a special report and it talks about how the Chinese dragon continues to bite the Indian tyre industry, almost gobbling up its market for replacement of truck and bus radial tyres. Enjoy reading!

BOSSMAN

Speaks PRASAN FIRODIA Managing Director, Force Motors Ltd Report & Photography: P. THARYAN You have inaugurated a new facility in Chakan (Pune) to manufacture engines and axles for Mercedes-Benz cars. Where was your facility earlier? Tell us about this new facility. We used to assemble engines and axles for Mercedes Benz cars from Urse. That facility is closed. This has been built with new processes and larger capacities. Capacity installed is one thing, but it has been built for another level. We have an installed capacity of 20,000 units per annum. At Urse it was just about 5,000 to 6,000 per annum. In the last three years the luxury car market has picked up on volumes. Based on that, a request came in for a larger set up. We have now built it from a ten year perspective more or less. We have an engine assembly plant for BMW in Chennai with similar capacity. These are all installed capacity. At the Chakan plant we have eight engine assembly lines already building 14 engine variants. We can only

do localisation once we have certain amount of volumes. We need to have certain economies of scale to justify the complete redevelopment cycle in India. That is for the customer, in our case Mercedes-Benz, has to take a call as to when we can trigger a localisation programme. How much do your engine assembly and axles businesses contribute to your overall revenues? Our vertical in terms of aggregates business contributes around 30pc to 35pc to total revenues. The rest comes from our traditional commercial vehicle business. Force Motors has invested Rs 100 crore in this plant. Has Mercedes-Benz also invested in this plant? It is beyond what we have invested. They have also put in some money. This plant has been built with a capacity looking at the long run. What is the installed

capacity of Force Motors’ plant? The installed capacity is around 65,000 units per annum. Last year we had a growth in excess of 30pc. If monsoons are normal and the rural economy picks up, this year will also be a good year for us, at least a growth of 15 to 20pc over last year. During the Auto Expo this year, we launched several new variants of the Traveller, our flagship product. We have also started expanding out Traveller production capacity in Pithampur. We are averaging around 2000 Traveller vehicles a month.

make all eight lines petrol if you so desire. That has to come from the customer side, we are not the ones to decide. If they have an engine programme which is less than 2 litre, and they want to ramp it up, we can always do it.

Has the ban on diesel cars with engine capacities of 2000cc and above in Delhi NCR and Kerala impacted your business? Definitely it has impacted our business. The luxury car segment which has a lot of engines that are more than 2,000cc in capacity have been affected. Our assembly lines for engines are very flexible here in Chakan. You can

What about investments to move all your engines from Euro IV to Euro VI or Bharat Stage 6 emission levels by 2020? 100 crore is what we shall be investing to take our engines from Euro IV to Euro VI capability. The government has to also see if they can provide the fuel by April 2020. There is lot of cost involved for OEMs.

How do you see the diesel ban by the Supreme Court and the NGT? I hope the courts really do understand what the industry is saying and stop this irrational decision. Rather they should take a decision to stop plying old vehicles. That will really contribute to reducing pollution.

WELL ENDOWED Report P. THARYAN & Photography: AFSAR BAIG

W

hen things go bad, you can either slip into a corner and brood or you can continue to push yourself hard to win. The story of MercedesBenz India is more about pushing itself hard to win. Despite the ridiculous ban on diesel cars with engine capacities of 2000cc and above in Delhi NCR and in some parts of Kerala, Mercedes continues to launch beautiful products powered by both powerful diesel engines as well as petrol. The latest to join its stable is an SUV that goes by the name GLC. Mercedes-Benz India currently has a great number of products to offer in India which includes at one end of its portfolio the likes of A-Class, the B-Class, the C-Class, CLA, CLS and E and on its other end , the likes of S-class, SLK, Maybach and of course the AMG flotilla. The sports utility vehicles include the pretty looking GLA, the GLE and the mammoth GLS. The GLC sports utility vehicle is the one that has joined the Mercedes club recently. We test drove the GLC 220d 4Matic and got to know as to why the company desperately needed this purposeful SUV for the Indian market. The GLC comes in both a petrol variant (GLC 300 4Matic) and a diesel. The petrol one is powered by a 1991cc engine while the latter has a 2143cc diesel engine, thereby disqualifying itself in the Delhi NCR and parts of Kerala. But the best part was that we got to drive a diesel vehicle in Delhi, of course one with a Maharashtra registration. It’s like having your favourite evening drink in

a state that’s stupid enough to clamp prohibition! Polluting? Environmental unfriendly? None of that I could see or experience in this car. Like I mentioned earlier, ridiculous decisions carry no logic. While the GLA is at the bottom end of the SUV range, we have the GLS at the top end. Just above the GLA, we have the GLC now and like the GLA is offered with both a petrol and diesel engine option. The GLE and GLS , which are a notch above the GLC, are offered only with a diesel engine option. Apart from the different engine options and of course the different lengths and widths of the vehicles in the SUV range, the GLC distinguishes itself as the most contemporary with its 9G-Tronic transmission and drive characteristics. The GLC is a city bred vehicle with a few off road capabilities. Ideally, it’s best that it is driven on our roads only because these roads with its humungous pot holes offer the best off road adventure. But in case you do take this vehicle on a pure off road track, it will bring you back home safe. Do remember, this vehicle is a lot about comfort and luxury. Maybe that is the reason why they named it GLC—Glamour, Luxury and Comfort! Personally I would like to add to that....this vehicle is Good Looking and Charming! On the looks front, the GLC stand out like a handsome bloke with a muscular body. The overall design from the front to the end is chic. It’s got a long wheelbase and short overhangs and not to miss is the bold radiator

trim with two louvers. The icing on the cake is the centrally positioned Mercedes star that looks amazingly beautiful. The front bumper has large air intakes and an under ride guard, though it’s all non metal and are there for the looks and not for any tank like protection. The flat belt line that is smartly designed starts somewhere from the A pillar and moves on till the C pillar, giving it a bold and smart design. The rear slopes almost coupe style and of course the twin exhausts give the vehicle a very sport look. Not to miss are the simulated underguard front/rear in chrome, roof railing in anodised aluminium, waistline trim strip in chrome, window weatherstrip in chrome and the

metal running broad with rubber studs. The vehicle sits on 18inches tyres mounted on light-alloy wheels in 5-spoke design. Usually we test drive our vehicles early morning when the sun has just about popped its head in the horizon and we generally do not get to admire the plethora of lights that are fitted on to the car. I made it a point to drive the vehicle at night for a brief moment just to get to know its lights. The moment you press the car key to open the car, the vehicle illuminates from inside, from front to back. Coming to the Intelligent Light System that encompasses the headlamps, it offers vision and safety. When turning or cornering, the low-beam headlamps

16 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

automatically adapt to the light and driving conditions. And the “Coming Home” function welcomes the driver with blue LED locator lighting when locking and unlocking the car via radio remote control key. The lights also shine brighter on bends and while cornering, without really blinding any oncoming vehicle Step into the vehicle and you are in a world of comfort and luxury. The one we drove had everything leather about it and that too dark in colour. Personally, I am against dark interiors, because it makes the car looks quite dingy. But then black is often referred to as chic! Along with a plethora of electrically controlled switches, levers and buttons and a panoramic sliding

sunroof, the moment you sit in the driver’s seat it’s like being in a cockpit of a small plane. The drive seat and the co passenger seats are electrically adjustable with 3 way memory function. Tug at these switches and your seat moves in every direction that eventually makes you comfortable. The 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel which can be electrically adjusted for rake and reach gives you the feel that you are on a track in Daytona or elsewhere. Apart from the leather spread across the dash area, there is a good element of wood finish around the console area. There are buttons for controls, as well as a giant knob besides a small touch screen wherein you can adjust several

settings pertaining to navigation, radio, vehicle dynamics etc, all looking at a tiny 5 inch screen fitted on to the dash. I felt the screen was small and smart, anything bigger would have meant carrying your LCD television in your car which in turn would have looked preposterous. The automatic climate control system with 3 climate zones and 3 airflow modes provides an individual feelgood climate on board. The driver and the front passenger are able to regulate temperature and air distribution independently of one another. Space for rear passengers too is more than adequate. Loads of storage space at the rear makes it a delight. It’s around 550 litres of space at the

www.motownindia.com

rear which can be adjusted to 1600 litres once the rear 60:40 seats are pushed down. But I was disappointed to see the spare tyre placed there, leaving limited space to keep one’s luggage there. In the passenger areas too there are adequate storage spaces for bottles and knick knacks. Near the console area between the two front seats there is a deep box to store your personal stuff. The tailgate can be opened and closed at the touch of a button for more convenient loading and unloading of the load compartment. For safety reasons the automatic closing procedure can only be activated by pushing and holding the switch in the driver’s door or using the ignition

key. Manual opening is possible via the release handle on the tailgate. Now when it comes to driving, ride and handling, there is a lot the car offers in stability and speed. The suspension is independent all around and power is transmitted via a 9 speed automatic gear box. It has a permanent four wheel drive or 4Matic and the torque is split in favour of the rear wheels. There are several drive modes to select from which include Comfort, Eco, Sport, Sport+ and Individual. For someone moving in slow traffic and is a settled driver, the Comfort and Eco modes are the best. For the one’s looking for some thrill in driving, the Sport and Sport+ modes are quite handy. It’s only in the Sport+ or Individual

modes that you have lots of fun in terms of driving and pick up. The moment you floor the accelerator, the car surges ahead like a vehicle on Red Bull. Personally speaking, just two driving modes would have been enough: Eco and Sport. The power build up is almost instant and by the time the car hits the 4000 rpm, you are watching the world go pretty fast. Use of paddle shifts just adds to the fun. If you depend on the vehicle electric controls, then you can be rest assured that all you have got to do is keep your hands on the steering and your eyes on the road. The GLC is not a beast, it’s not a giant, it’s just a big fella with good manners! It’s simply well endowed with loads of safety features. MI

mall sized vehicles are dominating the market of late, be it compact hatches, sedans or SUVS. While Maruti Suzuki was the first to bring out a compact sedan in the market, other competitors were not slow in launching their contenders. German stalwart Volkswagen recently launched their contender in the Indian market by the name of Ameo. This new compact sedan will go up against the likes of Maruti Suzuki’s Dzire, Hyundai’s Xcent, Honda’s Amaze and Tata’s Zest. We flew in to Pune to take this executive compact sedan for a spin and find out what makes it tick. The Ameo is primarily based on the platform

of the Polo hatchback and derives most of its qualities from the Polo. It is also powered by the same 1.2 L MPI petrol engine which is in the Polo with the 1.5 L TDI diesel engine to be offered around the festival season this year. This 1.2 L petrol mill puts out 74bhp at 5400rpm and 110Nm of torque at 3750rpm. The power from the engine peaks close to the end of the power band leaving you wanting for much more at the lower revs. The power delivery is quite gradual and if you are looking for a zippy drive this vehicle may just leave you a tad disappointed. But once the revs do build up there is enough to pack a powerful punch. We took the Ameo to approximately 150kmph and it did take the vehicle a while to get up to that mark.

However it climbs to 120kmph easily after which the buildup of speed does seem a bit stretched. On steep inclines and through some hilly roads the Western Ghats had to offer, the Ameo threw in some surprises. The Ameo climbed up these stretches without even flexing a muscle. The 110Nm of torque sent to the front wheels was adequate for these steep gradients. In terms of length, the Ameo stands at the 3995 mm mark thus putting it in the compact sedan segment. But despite being under 4 meters the Ameo offers a boot space of 330 litres which we felt was more than adequate for your weekend luggage. The Ameo does resemble the Polo in all respects except for the addition of a boot. The distinct C pillar is clearly visible in the Ameo however the company designers have done a good job of giving the Ameo smooth flowing lines which make the boot look somewhat

symmetrical to the rest of the car. When looked at from the side the boot however does seem smaller and disproportionate but that is a common phenomenon on all cars of this segment barring the Honda Amaze. When looking at comfort and luxury in this segment my choice would be the Ameo simply because of Volkswagens unmatched build quality and handling dynamics. The vehicle has a softly sprung suspension which is facilitated by a McPherson Strut in the front and a Semi Independent Trailing Arm in the rear. The suspension is quite adept at taking on bad roads and occupants in the cabin don’t get tossed about too much. The Ameo rides on 185/ 60 R15 tyres which are very sticky and grip the road quite well. We put this compact sedan through some really sharp corners at speeds in excess of 60kmph and the Ameo was

20 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

able to take it all in its graceful stride. The vehicle does not get its tail out easily and even if it does you won’t lose control over the Ameo. The steering is well weighted leaning a bit towards the heavier side but one does not have to put too much effort into moving this vehicle around with a turning radius of just 4.97 meters. One of the striking aspects of the Ameo is that it is being offered with ABS and dual front airbags as a standard feature. Making safety a priority is something every manufacturer needs to focus and VW is leading this movement. Braking on the Ameo is facilitated by discs in the front and drum brakes in the rear. The vehicle carries adequate stopping power and the brakes are quite progressive. We performed a few panic braking tests and the Ameo held its own in every condition be it smooth tarmac, gravel

or rough roads. Once nestled inside the cabin of this compact sedan the German build and finish quality is quite evident. The quality of plastics is good and the overall design of the cabin is quite contemporary. The first thing you will notice is the sleek looking three spoke steering wheel with a piano black finish. The touch and feel of the steering itself lends a very premium appeal to this vehicle putting it ahead of its competitors. The steering mounted controls have been ergonomically placed to ease the use of the infotainment system. The Ameo also comes with a single folding back rest, cruise control, automatic rain sensing wipers, one touch power windows, remote opening

of windows, AUX, USB and bluetooth enable touch screen infotainment system, automatic climate control apart from other features. On the safety front the vehicle comes with ABS, Dual airbags, Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Hill Hold control and other safety aids. The Ameo is also available in 5 different color schemes and promises of a fun and thrilling driving experience. There are very few areas where one can actually give a thumbs down to this vehicle, it is a very well thought

out vehicle with practicality engineered into every corner of the cabin. The only hiccup we had with this vehicle was the power delivery, which if improved would make it the best offering in the segment. The 1.2 L petrol mill returns almost 17.83kms to the litre which is decent by industry standards. The current mapping is very practical for city driving where one does not have too much scope of crossing 120kmph. On highways this vehicle may just leave you a little disappointed but on the bright side the soon to come 1.5 L TDI diesel mill should put all those worries to rest. MI

hey say the need for a revolution is quite simply the need to reinvent one’s self in a manner of being contemporary. When Tata Motors brought out their Tiago hatchback, their sentiment for a revolution became evident. The Tiago is not just contemporary in design but every inch and corner of this vehicle brings a breath of freshness. In my mind I can only imagine that when the people at Tata envisioned the Tiago they may have realised it is time to show the world their true engineering skills. In their bid to overcome stiff competition they brought forth a warrior. At first glance the Tiago does not look like a car designed by an Indian brand but the large Tata symbol sitting on the honey comb grill in the front gives one a reassuring feeling that this is the very same Indian brand. The styling is uber modern and has a definite road presence with smooth flowing lines running from front to back. The rising belt line running smack into the middle of the tail lamps gives the Tiago a very sculpted and muscular look. The Tiago also features a tidy use of chrome bits here and there, thus rendering an executive appeal. The sharp design of the head lamps and tail lamps gives the Tiago a very distinct personality and wild cat like appeal. At the heart of this wild cat is an eager 1.05 litre, 3 pot, diesel mill which despite being small

22 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

has enough oomph to thrill your senses. The eager 3 pot puts out 69bhp at 4000rpm, which may seem to be less but is actually not the case. The engine posts its peak power once crossing the mid range on the rpm band and at 4500 revs there is nothing more on offer. This does make things a bit complicated as you end up working the gears a bit but then again if that is an issue for you only an automatic will solve the problem. The exciting bit on the Tiago is its 140 Newton meters of torque which is available from 1800-3000 rpm. Between this range a smooth and gradual increase in speed is adequate to woo you. The diesel variant of the Tiago returns almost 27kms to the litre making it one of the most efficient hatches in its class. So if cruising on highways is your thing or you need speed for zipping in city traffic the Tiago has you covered on both fronts. The Tiago sits on 175/ 65 R14 tyres which have a profile matching the proportions of this car. The tyres grip the road well and the McPherson Strut in the front and Twist Beam with coil spring in the rear cater for a smooth and stable ride. The suspension setup extends a pleasurable drive experience and the car has great capability on road. Tata being an Indian company also knows the country’s road conditions very well, their Tiago hatchback can take on bad

roads with ease. Riding over potholes, bumps and broken roads is not that troublesome and the suspension soaks in most of the jolts and jerks. Braking on this hot hatch is facilitated by discs in the front and drum brakes in the rear. We performed multiple panic braking test in controlled environments and not once did the Tiago disappoint us in this department. When you enter the cabin of the Tiago you will be treated with a mix of great quality and modern design philosophy. The Tiago features a very executive looking dash with plenty of chrome tit-bits and a sumptuous use of piano black finish. I am not a big fan of the piano black finish as it leaves finger prints but then again it does look really handsome on the dash, complimenting the looks from every angle. The quality of plastics used and the build of the Tiago from the inside is good. From

24 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

certain angles the design language of the dash seems to have been borrowed from Jaguar Land Rover. The contemporary looking interiors along with comfortable seating provides a wholesome package for customers of the Tiago. The Tiago also comes packed with features which are quite handy and improve the overall

user experience of this car. The Tiago comes with a multi-function steering wheel, Harman surround sound multimedia infotainment setup with Bluetooth, AUX and USB connectivity, vanity mirrors, electrically adjustable ORVMs, day-night rear view mirror, cooled glovebox, navigation and mobile phone integration. On the safety front the Tiago comes with ABS, rear parking sensors, driver and passenger airbags, crash sensors, follow me home headlamps, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EDB) and Corner Stability Control. The overall package of the Tiago is infact a great one, which makes it one of Tata’s revolutionaries in changing the company’s image in the market. This compact hatch offers plenty of comfort, space, features and performance all at a price point of Rs. 5.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). MI

DRIVEN

TUV 300 - 100 HP

MORE PUNCH

I

Report JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER & Photography: AFSAR BAIG

n the world of SUVs there are only two things which hold utmost priority. The first being space and the second being performance. When Mahindra introduced the TUV 300 to the market in India, it came with Mahindra’s mHawk 80 diesel mill which churned out approximately 84bhp. But after receiving feedback that the vehicle felt

26 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

underpowered and lacked a punch, Mahindra decided to offer the TUV 300 with a more powerful variant. The company also recently launched the NuvoSport which comes with Mahindra’s mHawk 100 engine and this same engine has been retrofitted into the TUV 300. Since this vehicle has been in the market for a while we decided to do a performance review of the

SUV with its shiny new 100bhp engine. The mHawk 100 in the TUV 300 puts out 100bhp at 3750rpm and 240Nm of torque from 16002800rpm. The meat of the power comes in the midrange of the band and the low end torque is more than adequate to propel this massive vehicle to road worthy speeds. The TUV 300 can now reach a top speed of approximately 153kmph and can go from 0-100kmph in

www.motownindia.com

WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience

around 14 seconds. The new engine feels a lot more powerful than the previous mHawk 80 engine and has a more linear delivery. However one can feel a slight punch when the turbo kicks in. The flow of power is also smooth and you can rev the engine all the way upto 5000rpm. The shifts are smooth and crisp but the gear throws are a bit long. One does need to work the gears to often while driving on highways but in city traffic if power is what you crave then downshifting may be necessary. The TUV 300 can achieve 130kmph with ease but after that mark one does need to wait a bit to achieve its top speed. But then again how many times do we get the chance to hit such speeds on Indian roads? The suspension on the TUV 300 (100HP) variant is the same as the previous version with a double wishbone in the front and a rigid multi link in the rear. The stiffly sprung suspension has been tuned with precision and is ideal for Indian road conditions which can throw almost anything at you. Riding over smaller potholes and broken roads is not too much of a hassle for the TUV but one can get tossed around a bit through bigger bumps. The steering

on the TUV 300 is well weighted and accurate to inputs. One does not necessarily have to work the wheel much to get about in the TUV with a turning radius of 5.35 meters. The TUV offers good build quality and features as well but there are a few manufacturers who are offering more such as automatic headlamps, rain sensing wipers, projector headlamps, etc. The TUV 300 also comes with dual driving modes, Power and Eco modes. A button on the dash can enable or disable Eco mode but once in Eco mode the engine does feel sluggish and will not give the same performance however the vehicle gives a much better fuel efficiency in Eco mode. The fuel efficiency mark in Eco mode stands at 18.49kmpl. Another advantage on the TUV 300 is space and this apart from the NuvoSport is the only compact SUV with a seating capacity of 7. The price for the TUV 300 (100HP) variant has been set at Rs. 9.0 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the Manual 5-Speed version and Rs. 9.7 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the T8 AMT version of the SUV. The top end T8 Variant comes loaded with features and the more powerful mHawk 100 engine simply adds much more punch in it! MI

HOT DEAL FIRST RIDE

TVS APACHE RTR 200

Report JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER & Photography: AFSAR BAIG

I

have a need, the need for speed! This line just kept repeating itself in my head while I was riding the new Apache RTR 200. The bold and hunky lines flowing smoothly from front to back give this bike a rather aggressive look. Mount the split saddle and you will find yourself at the helm of one of the most thrilling motorcycles the 200cc category can offer. When it comes to performance oriented motorcycles, the Apache brand has been a true hero from the TVS stables and the latest 200cc Apache is here to challenge the Pulsar, whose reign has gone unchecked. At first glance this is a motorcycle to fall in love with. We got ours at the 2014 auto expo, when TVS unveiled the Draken concept and now in 2016 the Apache RTR 200 is here in flesh and blood. The Apache RTR 200 carries forward the distinct genetics its predecessors had, it boasts of power and torque, a throaty exhaust note and one of the most thrilling ride experiences a 200cc motorcycle can offer. The fuel tank is now bulkier and riders get a very snug fit while crouching in, the

aggressive looking tank and engine cowl add to the bike’s edgy appeal. The bike also features clip on handle bars, race derived O3C tech engine, a split cradle chassis, double barrel exhaust and a race tuned KYB monoshock. One can simply sit and drool at this bike but riding it is much more fun. Push the ignition and the engine roars to life, with the double barrel exhaust growling even louder in the same distinct Apache note. The 197.75cc bike has enough grunt to make you slide back in your seat and stream line. Putting out 20.5bhp and 18Nm of torque, the Apache RTR 200 provides a very zippy ride. It is fascinating to note that the bike weights in at 148kgs and yet has a 0-60kmph time of just 3.95 seconds and a 0-100kmph time of 12 seconds. The Apache RTR 200 can hit a top speed of 129kmph and we took it to about 122kmph. The bike gets to 120kmph with ease but past that mark it does take its own sweet time to go further. But speed is not the be all and end all of this bike, there is a lot more which goes into making this a race oriented machine. The first would be

adequate braking power and the Apache RTR 200 boasts of petal discs in the front and rear. The front sports a 270mm petal disc with a 2 pot caliper and the rear has a 240mm petal disc with a single pot caliper. TVS has provided the option of adding ABS on this bike which comes as a very hand feature in tricky situations. We performed a lot of panic braking tests and not once were we apprehensive about its capability. The bike can come to a halt from speeds of 80kmph in a matter of seconds making it rather safe as well. Another interesting fact to note is that while braking the Apache RTR 200 does not get its tail out too often. The ride of the RTR 200 has been facilitated by 37mm telescopic forks in the front and a race tuned monoshock in the rear. The ride is reasonably soft and soaks in most bumps and potholes on the road. Even on bad roads the RTR 200 can hold its own and provide a rather comfortable ride. The bike has been set on 90/ 90 R17 tyres in the front and 130/ 70 R17 tyres in the rear. TVS is also providing the option of Pirelli tyres on the bike which we found to be exceptionally sticky and provided phenomenal grip on tarmac. Even while cornering hard the bike lends you nothing but confidence and that says a lot about its exceptional build and handling dynamics. The split saddle is comfy and riders get a low set seat height of 800mm. The switch gear has been neatly placed on the clip on handle bars and every button is easily accessible to the rider. The rear view mirrors provide a good view of the road behind and the digital console up front is also quite easy to read. One can view top speed achieved and lap times on the digital console up front. The console also features a shift indicator and gear position indicator. If you are planning to buy a 200cc motorcycle and are stuck, then this bike offers a fresh design philosophy, a very thrilling ride experience and exceptional handling abilities. The fuel efficiency mark of the Apache RTR 200 stands at 35kmpl and the top of the line ABS version of the bike is available with Pirelli tyres for Rs. 1.15 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), making it a very hot deal!

Strikingly IMPROVED FIRST RIDE

TVS VICTOR

Report AAKASH S. PAUL & Photography: AFSAR BAIG

I

t has almost been a decade since the Victor motorcycle made an appearance in the market. Back then it was a hit not because of its looks or specs, rather what made it a success was its image as a family friendly bike for the common man. It delivered a great mileage and was sober and simple to suit the average ‘daddy’ of the early 2000s. Enter 2016 and the

standards of the common man have changed, no longer does he want just sheer mileage and convenience. Now he demands style and status as well. After all it’s an era of flaunting the good things in life. So does this new avatar of the Victor live up to the expectations and standards of today? The most striking improvement comes in the form of an updated overall design. The bike has been

34 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

made to look beefier and has been inscribed with dual tone graphics. Add to this the chiseled lines that flow along the bike and you have yourself a looker. The revised headlamp and tail lamp only add to the bike’s imposing look. You actually mistake the new Victor for a 125cc bike. When it comes to the engine, the Victor is powered by a 110cc, 3 valve engine that produces 9.5bhp of power at 7500rpm and

9.4Nm of torque at 6000rpm. This caters to a great riding experience. A kerb weight of 113 kgs lends the bike an immense stability even at high speed and the bike does not jitter or shake and produces minimal engine noise. The Victor 110 comes with an optional disc brake for the front. The disc performed really well on smooth tarmac and bad roads. Both the brakes were progressive and add to the confidence of the rider. The

bike also comes with tubeless tyres and taking tight corners is not a bother as you get a nice grip on the road. The suspension setup has been fine-tuned as well and when you go over some rough patches and broken tarmac (which is often in cities like Delhi), you won’t be shaken up too much. But what hampered the riding experience a bit is the 4-speed constant mesh transmission which we thought could have been made smoother. Also the acceleration is not the best, but it is good enough for city driving. The meter console of the Victor 110 consists of an analogue rpm gauge and a digital speedometer with trip meter, odometer and fuel level indicator. The console might not be the best looking one in the segment but gets the job done and is easy to read. There is also a handy Power and Economy mode indicator which enables the rider to determine their pattern of driving. The overall aesthetics of the bike are of great quality and we have no complaints in that area. The Victor also boasts of one of the most spacious seats in the segment and this is a welcome feature considering that this is a family oriented vehicle. The saddle also provides for an upright

www.motownindia.com

seating position. The Victor dawns a large 60W head lamp at the front which casts a strong beam and can be really handy in situations with low visibility like rain and fog. The rear view mirrors are also large enough and positioned properly to give you a good view of what is behind you. This is really valuable in city conditions where you have heavy traffic. In terms of fuel economy, the Victor 110 returns 76 kilometers to the litre which is decent for a 110cc bike especially considering the kind of performance that it delivers in exchange for this fuel economy, although the fuel tank is somewhat small at just 8 litres. In essence this 110cc motorcycle performs ideally in city traffic, has looks which are contemporary and a mileage that won’t burn a hole in your pocket. MI

Miller takes maiden MotoGP win in Assen, Netherlands The 250th race of the modern MotoGP era will be one that Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS and Jack Miller will never forget, after the Australian claimed a remarkable maiden premier class victory at the historic Assen track in the Netherlands on a rain soaked track. Miller overcame perilously tricky conditions on a weatherdominated afternoon at the Dutch TT to become the first non-factory rider in 10 years to win in MotoGP. He also became the first Australian to win a MotoGP race since Casey Stoner in 2012 after a day of high drama and tension in front of a sell-out crowd of 105,000 fans in Holland. Scheduled to be a 26-lap race that started on a wet track, Miller had expertly mastered the tricky track conditions to charge from

19th into eighth when the action was halted on safety grounds on lap 15 as monsoon conditions enveloped the 4.5km Assen venue. Once conditions had improved and standing water was cleared from the track, the race was restarted over a shortened distance of 12-laps, with the grid forming based on positions from part one. Conditions were no less hazardous in part two, but as experienced riders crashed out of contention, Miller rode a majestically measured and composed race to move into the top three on only the second lap. A brilliantly executed overtake on Marc Márquez on lap four then put Miller at the front of the field. And it was a lead he never looked like relinquishing, as he rode a

faultless final eight laps to win by almost two seconds, sparking jubilant celebrations to mark the first MotoGP win by Team Estrella Galicia 0,0 Marc VDS since its premier class collaboration started with Honda in 2015. Miler’s teammate Tito Rabat crashed on lap five in the 12-lap restart. After his win Jack Miller said, “I don’t often say this but I’m lost for words. I feel incredibly emotional right now and it is hard to describe the sensation of winning for the first time in MotoGP....” In fact after the race was restarted, run over 12 laps, the grid was based on

the finishing positions on lap 14 and the quick restart rule made its first appearance in the premier class. As such Andrea Doviziosoof Ducati Team lined up on pole with Danilo Petrucci and Valentino Rossi completing the front row. Redding led the Repsol Honda Team pairing of Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa on the second row, Jorge Lorenzo (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) lined up in 19th after a disastrous start in the first 14-lap race.

Mahindra makes history with epic first win in Moto3 at Assen Italian teenager Francesco Bagnaia (Pecco) made history at Assen on June 26 – fighting every inch of the way to claim not only his first grand prix win, not only the first win for the Mahindra Moto3 team, but the first ever in the history of the sport for an Indian constructor. The 19-year-old Italian’s triumph came after one of the fiercest races ever seen in the most competitive class in the

MotoGP World Championships. A pack at one stage 14-strong fought over centimetres of track and hundredths of a second, over the full 22 laps of the classic 4.542-km Assen TT circuit. The top three crossed the line within four hundredths of a second; the top six inside two tenths. Bagnaia had qualified tenth, on the fourth row of the grid, but he put his whiteliveried Aspar Mahindra racer at

the sharp end throughout. After 99.924 km of the fiercest fighting, the 19-year-old star was ready to claim a virtual photo-finish win in a fairing-banging, paint-swapping brawl through the final chicane. Victory came after the best season so far for the Mahindra MGP3O racing motorcycle. Bagnaia had already claimed three, top-three podium places. This first race win halfway through the

2016 season was proof positive of Mahindra Racing’s hard-won progress, and the perfect reward for tireless work at the Indian company’s state-of-the-art racing bike development and engineering facility in Italy.

Belgian driver Thierry Neuville banished memories of a torrid start to the 2016 season by claiming his second career victory in a Hyundai i20 at the WRC Rally Italia Sardegna. He became the fifth different winner in the last five FIA World Rally Championship rounds, adding to his maiden victory in Germany in 2014. However, Hyundai Motorsport was hit by a massive Euros 50,000 (Rs 37.75 lakh approx.) fine after admitting fitting the wrong rear side windows to Rally Italia Sardegna winner Thierry Neuville’s car. The result marks the second victory for the New Generation i20 WRC this season, and the team’s third win in total after Rallye Deutschland in 2014 and Rally Argentina back in April. Neuville faced an anxious wait to see if he would keep his win after event stewards investigated a report from FIA Technical Delegate, Jérôme Touquet, following postevent scrutineering. Team boss Michel Nandan admitted the windows on Neuville’s i20 were not the same as those submitted in photographs in the homologation form. He said the illegal windows had been used in all their 2016 cars since January’s Rallye Monte-Carlo and accepted they made a mistake in the homologation process. Nandan explained that the windows shown on the homologation form could not be fitted into the rear doors of the finished car. The car was originally presented for inspection with the doors unassembled and the team did not realise that the windows could not be fitted into them. Stewards were told the new windows were 17g lighter on one side and 19g lighter on the other. Neuville headed Jari-Matti Latvala’s Volkswagen Polo R by 24.8sec after fourdays of rough gravel speed tests on the Mediterranean island. Championship leader Sébastien Ogier extended his points advantage by finishing third in another Polo R, a further 1min 13.0sec behind.Despite overshooting a hairpin bend, Ogier won the final live TV Power Stage to claim three bonus points. JUST IN Lewis Hamilton scrapes through to win Austrian Grand Prix What a brilliant race at the Austrian Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes nudged himself to win the F1 race at Spielberg for the Round 9 of the Formula 1 Grosser Preis von Osterreich 2016. In a bid to win the race, Lewis’s car almost crashed out as his car and that of his teammate Nico Rosberg collided in the last lap. In lap 71, when the two Mercedes cars collided, Rosberg kept his position but lost his front wing and drove on to come second. Rosberg who was leading the race had hoped for a hat-trick here, after winning the last two races in this country. It was bad luck for Sergio Perez of Sahara Force India who could have come in the first ten for the points but he crashed out in the last moment. His teammate Nico Hulkenberg just gave away his chances and despite starting third in the grid came in a poor 19th. Iceman Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari came in third while his teammate Sebastian Vettel retired earlier in the race after lap 26 as his tyre shreds into pieces. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen came in second.

Porsche bringing in the #2 on the 373rd lap for refuelling only. This meant that Neel Jani had kept the same tyres for four stints! Likewise for the Toyota on lap 374: refuelling but no tyre change. The Japanese car’s tyres were then on their third stint. The pit stop was better handled by the Japanese team who were more than four seconds faster. With

just 30 minutes to go, the gap between the two cars widened to 30 seconds. Disaster struck as the #5 Toyota TS 050 was coming up to its final lap. Kazuki Nakajima slowed down then came to a complete standstill just before the line. Neel Jani, in the #2 919 Hybrid, stormed past for his final lap and clinched the win for Porsche.

JUST IN Sebastien Buemi is new FIA Formula E champion Sebastien Buemi is the new FIA Formula E champion after clinching the title courtesy of setting the Visa Fastest Lap during the seasonending Visa London ePrix on July 3, 2016. The final race of the 2015/16 season was a controversial affair, brought about by title rivals Buemi and Lucas di Grassi colliding on the opening lap of the race. Buemi made a slow start from pole, and was rear-ended by di Grassi under braking for Turn 3. Bruno Senna of Mahindra Racing who came second the previous day in London, claimed sixth, ahead of team-mate Nick Heidfeld. Meanwhile the incident involving the top two leading drivers took the rear wing off Buemi’s Renault e.dams entry, while there was significant front end damage to the Abt Schaeffler car of di Grassi. Both drivers limped back to the pits so that they could switch to their second car. With two points on offer for the Visa Fastest Lap and both drivers tied on points, the championship now boiled down to a fight over who could be quickest over a flying lap.

MOTORSPORT TVS Racing names Aravind KP to be a part of Dakar Rally 2017

TVS Racing supports Alisha Abdullah Racing Academy for Women

TVS Racing announced that its champion rider Aravind KP will be competing for the ‘Sherco-TVS Rally Factory’ team at Dakar Rally 2017. Aravind has been a part of the TVS Racing team for the past ten years and this will mark his debut in the world’s toughest cross-country rally. Aravind KP started racing in 2005 at the age of 19 looking to prove himself on the national racing. TVS Racing spotted Aravind in 2006 at Gulf Dirt Track National Championship. Since 2006, Aravind has won 15 National Championships in Dirt track, Rallies and Motocross and in 2011 he became the first Indian to win an overseas Motocross Championship (Srilanka). Aravind will team-up with Juan Pedrero a Spanish Champion for Sherco-TVS Rally Factory team at Dakar Rally 2017.

TVS Racing has announced an exclusive collaboration with the new Alisha Abdullah Racing Academy for Women– India’s first training school for women racers. TVS Racing will support the academy with the racing bikes and technical expertise. The academy has shortlisted 18 women riders who will race exclusively for TVS Racing Team in the first year. The first batch of 18 students at the Alisha Abdullah Racing Academy for Women has been selected from 80 entries after clearing rigorous tests. These riders are now being trained to improve physical fitness and hone their racing skills.

INTERVIEW WITH ARAVIND KP, Sherco-TVS Rally Factory Team Aravind you have 17 national titles under your belt and last year in 2015 you also won Raid De Himalayas, so how does it feel to be a part of the Sherco-TVS Team? It is an overwhelming feeling and a dream come true. I have been wanting this for a long time and being able to be associated with such a team which has a long heritage with Dakar, this is definitely going to be helping me in a lot of ways. It boosts my confidence. Speaking of Dakar, you are going to be entering the rally. What is the training you have gone through and are you preparing to toughen yourself even more for the mother of all races? Definitely, since I have been racing professionally for the past ten years, the training part has always been there. I have just stepped it up. The time which I have spent on the bike is only a couple of hours before now I have made it 6-7 hours. That is the step which I have changed majorly. Like you said it is the mother of all races, so no matter how much you work towards it and since it is my first time, I think I should be more than prepared to be able to do whatever I have envisioned. I have been working hard.

country rallies---they are like two days of Dakar. Rallies like the Raid De Himalaya and Desert Storm are challenging as well. They have different elements, which is also like Dakar. The elevation changes, the temperature in the Himalayas, its sub zero and in the desert it is extremely hot.

Are you confident that you are a 100pc ready for the race? No matter how ready you are still not ready because there are situations which are thrown at you which you can never think of and I think I am just trying to be as ready as possible. I think I can deal with the events, other than that pretty much ready for the race. How different is your Dakar bike from the other bikes you have ridden before? It is quite different, but it has the same base and comes from

the same kind of engine base. But we have different navigation cover, it also has more subsidiary fuel tanks, it is also heavier than before and it is going to handle a little different because of all the components in it. It will definitely have a lot more power than the bikes I have been riding here, which is a plus point. What has been your most challenging rally ever and how does it compare to the Dakar? The five days rallies which I have been doing in India,---the cross

How easily did your association with TVS come and how is it going to affect your racing career up ahead? It was a long relationship, I have been with them for the past ten years, it is a strong one also. Whatever levels I have got into and grown is all because of the TVS backing which I have in the time when I needed it. It is a good association and in the future we have a lot more plans, we are still in the beginning part of it. It is going to be a good one. In the Dakar you have C S Santosh who is riding for Hero MotoCorp. How reassuring is it to have another fellow Indian with you in the rally? Only when you leave the country are you named as Indian. So having another person from the same country like C S Santosh, it is definitely reassuring that you always have someone along, who has already been there. It definitely is reassuring.

India’s ace rally rider CS Santosh who was placed 16th place in the Merzouga Rally in Morocco (Africa), which forms part of the Dakar Series, is spending the next three months in Europe to train for the next edition of the Dakar Rally in 2017. Participating only in his second international cross-country rally in as many years, Santosh had to deal with a steep learning curve riding for the recently formed Hero Motosports Team Rally in strategic partnership with Speedbrain, the German cross-country rally specialist. Earlier in January 2016, his Dakar adventure lasted barely two and half stages being forced to retire due to mechanical and electrical problems with the bike. Santosh’s outing in the Moroccan desert was the first full international cross-country rally in close to two years. His teammate, Joaquim Rodrigues of Portugal, bagged a ninth place finish in the first rally for the new team. Santosh believes that the Hero Motosports Team Rally brings the best of both worlds.

MOTORSPORT INTERVIEW WITH

ASHISH GUPTA,

Founder & Director, Cougar Motorsport What got you into an activity of this kind? I was a banker by profession and I used to indulge in a little bit of motorsports, do some rallying -Raid De Himalaya, Desert Storm, etc. I had a gypsy and every time I came back from an event most of my peers or colleagues or clients who would know that I had gone for a motorsport event would express an interest to also participate. That is when the idea was born, to create a platform to give these people who have interesting vehicles and have a passion for driving something to do with those vehicles. That is how we started with Cougar Motorsport in 2009. The Rain Forest Challenge event that you host is into its 3rd year now. Are you happy with the way things are moving? This year you have something called India 4X4 week, now what is that all about? While Cougar started with the “dashes” which we continue to do, we realised that out of the entire motorsport domain, we were getting more and more involved with the off road space. Even the events that we do for the car companies such as Land Rover, Pajero, Audi, etc they were all related to off roading rather than being track events or rallies, etc. That is when the idea of the Rain Forest Challenge came in and as you said we have run it for the last two years. When it started there seemed to be a huge gap where Indian off roading was and what RFC required in terms of vehicle build, endurance and competitive levels. Then in the last two years we have been fairly surprised and the final icing is that this year when more than two months before

www.motownindia.com

the event we have had to say no and that the entries have been closed. We have got comments from people saying that we have spent lakhs on vehicles, how can you not take our entries. We have a limitation of carrying only 25 entries as we cannot finish a day with more vehicles than that. RFC has come and established itself as India’s largest, mother of all off road events. It is an extreme event of one week with the right kind of equipment where vehicles can come and compete. The thought was why not also try and bring the larger off road community together and it helps us in RFC as well. Because these people come to Goa and if we give them something to come to Goa for, then we build on our audience for the RFC. They will come attracted to Goa to watch this challenge because it is so extreme and tough for them. So they will build on it for each other. That is why we added this convention around the RFC and coincides with RFC but apart from just watching the RFC, people who have a general interest in 4WD and off roading will have other things to do as well. Cougar Motorsport has also tied up with a US based winch company, Warn. Is that good news? As a testimonial to RFC and how it is building out in India, we were approached by Warn Industries which is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of winches. Most off roaders preffer and use Warn winches, electric winches to be a part of RFC in India. We are really delighted that Warn has picked us out of all other events in the region and want to be the official winch partner for RFC India. Most of the participants who have registered are in any case using

Warn products. It is good in terms of being able to access the latest technology from Warn. It is also good for Warn to build a brand around their product in India. They could not have picked a better event. Are you looking at equally big events like the RFC in the future? There is no end to how each one of these can be made bigger. The Dashes which we host, we can make them bigger and take them international. When we were doing the RFC in Goa last year we announced that we will do a couple of regional chapters. So we did RFC North and RFC South which were a precursor to this Goa event. The winner of RFC

North and RFC South got free entries to come and compete in the Goan event. Nothing stops us from adding a few more regional rounds of RFC in India. The RFC in Goa can be bigger in terms of scale etc. But we can do an RFC event in the North, South, West and North East, so that itself can be bigger. In this year when we did the RFC in the North and South we still called it the Force Gurkha RFC South and Force Gurkha RFC North. I think as a part of my commitment to our sponsor who supported us for the last two years, it is only fair that we give them more visibility and more mileage where ever we go. We will see how it goes in the future. (For full interview log on to www. motownindia.com)

hey say you cannot achieve anything in life without a lot of pain. Hence the adage, “No Pain No Gain”. In the world of two-wheeler stunt riding, there is a lot of pain, yes extreme physical pain at times leading to fatal consequences. But finally when a stuntman perfects the art of stunt riding, it’s like poetry in motion! Call it insane, call it madness, call it a sport, but it’s definitely something that gets your adrenaline racing.. There are several stunt championships across the globe, but none of major significance yet in India. Energy drink Red Bull brought two-time European stunt champion and Red Bull athlete Aras Gibieza to India to perform in nine cities in the months of April and May 2016. Red Bull has in the past done similar exercises globally with other stunt riders like Chris Pfeiffer, Aaron Colton and Shadi Al Dhaheri. Stunt championships like Stunt Grand Prix have been drawing stunt riders from across the world to compete for the coveted world championship crown. The Stunt GP is the biggest and most professional event of this type organised in the world, claim the people behind this show. In the 2015 Stunt GP, Marcin Glowacki of Poland came first. Other who walked away with prizes included Herczeg Balázs of Hungary, an old school rider aged 39 years old and Paweł Karbownik of Poland who was placed third. Sarah Lezito of France was the only girl at StuntGP 2015. She was among the top ten in ranking. She is perhaps the best girl stunt rider in the world. The western world is considered the Mecca for stunt riding and the various championships it hosts. There are events like the XDL Championship in Indianapolis, Stuntrider German Championship, Stuntriding World Championship, European Stuntriding Championship, Stuntwars

Competition in US, Stunt Riding EuroCup, SBF European Stunt Competition , Bulgarian Stunt Competition etc. There are many motorcycle stunt riders of repute in the world. Names like Rafal Pasierbek of Poland and Robert William ‘Robbie’ Maddison are household names in Europe. Rafal has won the XDL Championship while Maddison in April 2015 achieved the feat of riding a modified dirt motorbike on a wave near Teahupoo in Tahiti, after two years preparing for the event. Motorcycle stunts come with their set of risks and injuries. Recently, one of Australia’s foremost motorcycle stunt riders, Matt Mingay, was injured in a horrifying crash in a Stadium Super Trucks race in Detroit. Surgeons performed more than five hours of surgery to insert a prosthetic chin and to rebuild his jaw and mouth In other instances stunt riders have been paralysed or have been grievously injured as a result of stunt riding. On being asked whether he has experienced any kind of misadventure while performing his stunts on motorcycle, Aras Gibieza told Motown India in an email interaction, “Yes, I had some broken bones because of which I couldn’t compete in competitions.” According to a blog written by Jesper Bram, legendary names in global motorcycle stunts include men like Gary Wells who set 110 world records and Indian Larry who was originally known as Lawrence DeSmedt and got his Indian name because he rode through around the streets of New York on a chopped Indian motorcycle. He died of injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash during a show in 2004. Other biggies include Doug Domokos, nicknamed “The Wheelie King”, Putt Mossman, Frank Mackewich aka Fearless Frank who was also known for his death-defying stunts, Hurricane Hutch, Robbie Knievel and Eddie Kidd,.

DIFFERENT KINDS OF MOTORCYCLE STUNTS Apart from motorcycle stunts involving jumping off cliffs and jumping over cars and buses, motorcycle stunt riding, often referred to as stunting, is a motorcycle sport characterised by stunts involving acrobatic manoeuvring of the motorcycle and sometimes the rider. These stunts include wheelies, stoppies, and burnouts. Wheelies again may be different depending on the stunt, like a simple wheelie where the front of the motorcycle is lifted off the ground, or a circle wheelie, or a high chair wheelie where the rider’s legs are over the handlebars. In a “tank wheelie”, the rider sits on the tank with legs spread. A frog wheelie is when the rider stands on the tank, and a seat stander wheelie where the rider is the

rider standing on the motorcycle’s saddle. A wheelie where the person is standing on the windshield while riding is called a watch tower. Then there are also several bar tricks too like Ape Hanger, cliff hanger etc. Common ones are the Stoppie where the rider lifts the rear wheel of the motorcycle. There is a Biscuit Eater where the Stoppie is done with the rider’s legs over the handlebars. Burn outs are also very popular among motorcycle stunt riders. Acrobatic stunts include Hyperspin, Switchback, Christ and De activator.

INDIAN MOTORCYCLE STUNT RIDERS As far as motorcycle stunt clubs in India are concerned, there are more than a dozen in the country. Names like BanDit

Bikers, Outlawz, Polacafe, Devil Roadiez, Ghost Ryderz, Team RPM, Throttlerz, Team Coasterz, Freaky Bikers, Stunt Infected, Team Insane and Steel Silencerz are some of the many stunt clubs spread across India. Besides these clubs there are several individuals who on their own do stunts just to earn a name for themselves in the world of motorcycle stunts. “Yes you have thousands of stunt riders and enthusiasts in the country and some of them are riding really well. So at least a few of them should be reaching the top level globally,” says Red Bull athlete Aras Gibieza. Anam Hashim, a very popular Indian female motorcycle stunt rider says stunt riding is not considered a serious sport in India. “My advice to youth interested in stunt riding is to urge them to follow their passion but learn

under the guidance of experienced stunt riders. Private companies and even the government should work hand in hand to encourage this sport. It is important that aspiring stunt riders do not stunt on main roads and disrupt public activity but have a safe practice arena with appropriate permissions and safety gear. In the near future, I intend to work towards setting up a federation for stunt riding in India and promote the sport through exclusive events,” says Hashim in an email interaction with Motown India. Hashim says that while there are a lot of stunt riding groups and initiatives, there is a dearth of established training schools or federation focused on stunt riding in India. As of now, most of the aspiring stunt riders learn by experience, videos and observing experienced riders. “I hope we can

When you pursue something you love, either it destroys you or it takes you to the pinnacle of success.” ~ Bunty Godara soon change that,” she says. Hashim owns a TVS Scooty Zest 110 cc and TVS Apache RTR. She used an Apache during her training and she stunts on it as well. She has conquered the world’s highest motorable road, Khardung La Pass (18380 feet) on a TVS Scooty Zest 110. “Riding to Khardung La is not an easy task but it is also every rider’s dream. TVS Motor Company came to me with an interesting proposition to fulfil my dream on a Scooty Zest 110 cc. All apprehensions vanished during my week along with the TVS Scooty Zest 110 cc which I rode through Pune and on the ghats of Lonavala. Riding to Khardung La tests both the rider and the machine so I had to prepare well for it. I gym regularly and maintain a strict diet which was an advantage,” she points out. “Post Khardung La, my relationship with the TVS Scooty is a special one and I sometimes stunt with it. I aspire to stunt on a BMW bike someday,” she adds. Now TVS Motor Company has launched Season 2 of ‘Himalayan Highs’, inviting entries from women riders across India to ride to Khardung La Pass on TVS Scooty Zest 110 “The image of stunt riding is really pathetic in a country like India. When you pursue something you love, either it destroys you or it takes you to the pinnacle of success. In the beginning we used to see stunts in movies where people used to do wheelies and stoppies. As for the international videos on stunting, well even today

www.motownindia.com

we find it difficult to achieve those levels. But watching that was kind of madness and our brains were blow away by the stunts people performed,” says Bunty Godara of a little known club in New Delhi that goes by the name of Mototycoonz. Speaking to Motown India, Bunty confesses that people do not take stunt riders seriously. “They think we toss around motorcycle s and jump on them. But when people perform motorcycle stunts in movies, the crowd cheers for them. And when we do that individually, people think we are mad. When stunt riders from abroad come to India to perform they are treated as ministers. When we perform, they simply treat us as we are some vagabonds,” he says. Bunty is happy that after a long time TVS Motors sponsored him and his boys. “We got a brand new Apache. That was a great feeling. There was a time we did not have our own motorcycle and we used to pick up one that belonged to a family member. Now we do our stunts on our bikes and we are not scared of anyone,” he notes. Manninder Singh of Mototycoonz says he was inspired by his elder brother who used to

do stunt riding. Singh once took his brother’s bike without his knowledge at night and the police caught him doing stunting on the roads. He had to cool his heels for the entire evening in the police station. When his brother died in a road accident, Singh was pressurised by his family to quit doing motorcycle stunts. But he refused. “I have not learnt anything else in my life, except do stunt riding. This is my life. As long as there is life in my body, I shall continue doing stunt riding,” he signs off. It is this undying spirit that motivates hundreds and thousands of boys and sometimes even girls to pursue motorcycle stunting in India. It is now time for the sports authorities in the government and even the corporate world to provide a right platform for them to hone their skills further and make it a right career for them.

“I have not learnt anything else in my life, except do stunt riding. This is my life. As long as there is life in my body, I shall continue doing stunt riding,”

TYRE SPECIAL

INDIAN TYRE INDUSTRY

The fatal Chinese bite T Report: P.THARYAN

he bite of the Chinese dragon is beginning to get fatal for the Rs 50,000 crore Indian tyre industry. On the one hand while Indian tyre majors are facing a severe shortage of raw material like rubber in the country, there seems to be no let up on the indiscriminate Chinese imports of truck and bus radial tyres (TBRs). What is really alarming is the fact that Chinese dumping of tyres now

accounts for 90pc of TBR imports (2015-16). The share of Chinese imports was a mere 40pc in 2013-14 and had grown to 70pc in 2014-15. One must also remember that the market for truck and bus tyres accounts for 60pc of local manufacturers’ revenue. “If you have to assess imports, particularly in the commercial vehicle segment, today I think 90pc of commercial vehicle tyres (truck and bus radials) imports are coming from one country that is China. That is an area of big

58 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

concern for the industry because most of the tyres that are coming in are in the dumped category. The prices at which the imports are coming are so low that they are not even adequate to cover the cost of raw materials. You have a very serious and challenging situation here as one is competing against imports which are at prices that are so slow that even the raw material costs are not covered. We would like the government to address this at the earliest,” noted Rajiv Budhraja, Director General,

, Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) while speaking to Motown India in an exclusive interview. The Chinese dumping of tyres is quite evident and to make matters worse these Chinese TBRs cost around Rs 10,000 while that of a branded Indian tyre costs around Rs 15,000. It is also learnt that these

Chinese TBR export prices from China are significantly lower than the prices of such tyres in the Chinese domestic market as well as compared to the prices of TBRs imported from other countries like South Korea and Thailand. Adding to this misery for the Indian tyre manufacturers is the fact that in the budget for 2016-2017 the

government did not impose an anti-dumping duty on the import of TBRs from China or raise the basic customs duty from the existing 10 percent. ATMA has been for a long time been pleading to the government to increase the customs duty on tyres from 10 per cent to 30 per cent with a view to correct inverted duty between tyres and natural rubber. ATMA figures clearly indicate that the import of TBRs during April and May 2016 grew to 280,000 units, compared to the 180,000 imported in the corresponding months of 2015-16. TBR import had also gone up by 60 per cent in 2014-15 and 64 per cent in 2015-16. China now dominates as the source country for TBR import in India--- 90 per cent. This indiscriminate dumping has send alarm bells ringing in the Indian tyre industry as the tyre majors have made investments of around Rs 25,000 crore towards creating new capacities in TBR manufacturing.

PROSPECTS FOR THE INDIAN TYRE INDUSTRY India today has more than 60 tyre manufacturing plants and is one of the largest tyre markets in the world. According to TechSci Research, growing automobile sales coupled with expanding automobile fleet are the major factors boosting demand for tyres in the country. Moreover, with favourable inflationary scenario, expanding middle class population and increasing national disposable income, tyre sales across all the automobile segments are expected to grow in the coming years.

TYRE SPECIAL

Major tyre manufacturers in the country today include the likes of MRF, Apollo Tyres, JK Tyre, Ceat, Goodyear, Birla Tyres, BKT and TVS Srichakra, to name a few. But other big brands like Bridgestone, Michelin, Yokohama, Continental and Hankook are slowly making steady progress in India’s tyre market. In the organised re-treading business, there are only a few players in India like the Elgi Group, Indag Rubber Limited, Vamshi Rubber Limited and some tyre manufacturers like MRF and JK tires. In another report published by ICRA early 2016, it said that the domestic tyre industry is likely to do better in the coming three years (2016-18), when demand would grow in the range of 4-6%. The industry-wide revenue growth is estimated at 4-6%. The report said that profit margins are likely to remain at elevated levels with bearish outlook on rubber and crude oil prices, but current levels are unlikely to be sustained over the next 12-18 months. With the build-up of accruals and expectation of demand improvement, tyre manufacturers are expected to continue to invest towards capacity expansions, particularly in the two-wheelers segment which suffers from capacity shortage. Around 60% of the proposed capacity additions (in volume terms) are focused on the 2W industry, while in value terms over 45% of the investments are being made in the TBR segment, the ICRA report maintained.

60 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

Despite the Chinese dumping

of tyres, Indian tyre manufactures continue to invest in new capacities and expand their product portfolio in the last few months:

MRF LTD: The largest tyre manufacturer in the country, Chennai based MRF Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Tamil Nadu to invest not less than Rs. 4500 crore in its plants at Perambalur and Arakonam in Tamil Nadu over a period of 7 years.

APOLLO TYRES LTD: Apollo Tyres, the country’s second largest company in the sector by revenue, has ventured into the two-wheeler space. Until now the company was manufacturing truck, bus and car tyres. The company’s vice-chairman and managing director Neeraj Kanwar said noted that his company is looking to cater to at least 85 per cent of the two- wheeler market with its current product range. Apollo Tyres is also going to invest Rs 4000 crore in capacity expansion plans on two plants in fiscal 2016-17. Kanwar said that his company will start rolling out tyres from its upcoming plant in Hungary by January 2017. The company is doubling the capacity of its Chennai plant to 12,000 truck and bus radials (TBR) a day from 6,000 earlier. The company has outsourced production of the two-wheelers tyres in South India and is looking to sell 500,000 two-wheeler tyres per month over the next two years.

JK TYRE: This Raghupati Singhania controlled company

announced in April 2016 that it has completed the acquisition of Cavendish Industries Ltd (CIL), which houses three tyre business undertakings of BK Birla Tyres at a value of Rs 2,200 crore. With this, the company also entered the two/three wheeler tyres market. The plants are located at Laksar (Haridwar), which manufactures a range of tyres, tubes and flaps. With this acquisition, JK Tyre becomes a 12-tyre plants company with nine plants in India and three in Mexico. The company now eyes a turnover of Rs 10,000 crore from the domestic operations in the current fiscal. The group’s total Income decreased from Rs. 7400 crore for the year ended March 31, 2015 to Rs. 6969 crore for the year ended March 31, 2016.

BIRLA TYRES: According to latest information, Kesoram Industries may invest Rs 300 crore in its tyre manufacturing unit at Balasore in Odisha as part of plans to foray into the passenger car tyre segment in 2016-17. The Basant Kumar Birla flagship had conceived the passenger car radial project a few years back but legal challenges held up the implementation of the project. The company had earlier transferred its manufacturing unit at Laskar in Haridwar to Cavendish. The unit was later sold to JK Group. Following the sale of the unit, two and three-wheeler tyres that were earlier manufactured at Haridwar are now being produced from Balasore. Truck and bus radial tyres, which were also made at Haridwar, will now be sourced from overseas and sold under the

he unfortunate sight of overloaded trucks is a common visual in recent times. Often we have seen freshly made highways damaged and then blame the poor road quality for it while the culprit may be something else altogether. Carrying the maximum possible loads and severely exceeding the loading limit is detrimental not only to the trucks but also lead to erosion of the roads. But all this may be a thing of the past. Educated transporters and better government policies are rapidly driving change in how transporters operate. The tough measures taken by the state and central governments to restrict heavy loading are steadily bringing improvement to the overall scenario. While these changes spell good news for the government who can now invest in sustained infrastructure development, it also means a major overhaul to the businesses of commercial vehicle and tyre manufacturers. As the loading practices are reforming, the consumer expectations are also changing simultaneously. Earlier, majority of consumers were looking for vehicles & tyres which were able to withstand extreme conditions. Coming specifically to tyres, the focus was more towards the durability while other tyre performance criteria like tread mileage, fuel economy were not immediately recognized.

All this has changed drastically and fleets are moving towards the optimization of their operations to get the maximum value. Continental India Private Limited, the leading auto parts maker and tyre manufacturer has also taken a note of these trends and is actively supporting the fleet owners by designing tyres suitable to their applications. Recently, they launched the HSR2 Îą & HDR2 Îą (10.00R20), tyres which are designed specifically for high tread mileage (within the recommended GVWs). Armed with a cooler running compound and a sound structure, these tyres support the fleets in achieving lower driving costs. These highway application based tyres are just a precursor to a range of new tyres which are going to be launched in the near future. India is also maturing into a market that is willing to accept the latest technology. More and more transporters are improving their truck maintenance processes and are adopting technological support like GPS trackers and the latest tyre pressure monitoring systems. The technology of tubeless radial tyres, which is prevalent in other markets, is also gradually being accepted in India. Continental with a strong customer oriented team keeps a finger on the pulse of the market and works tirelessly to augment their offerings to fulfill customer needs.

INTERVIEW WITH

RAJIV BUDHRAJA

Director General, Automotive Tyre Manufacturers Association (ATMA) How did the Indian tyre industry perform during 2015-16? The year 2015-16 has been an equally challenging year, like the year before. It’s also been a year of mixed performance. What we are getting to see is that it is increasingly becoming difficult to generalise across all categories that the performance has been good or bad for a particular year. Some categories are outperforming the others. Some are doing exceptionally well, and some are of course lagging behind. Coming specifically to 2015-16, one of the noteworthy features has been the commercial vehicle segment seems to be bouncing back, registering good recovery. We have had a double digit 20pc kind of growth in the commercial vehicle OE segment. That augers well because this was one critical segment for the tyre industry which was not doing well for the last three or four years. But again, the numbers have not reached the 2011-12 volumes that were witnessed by the OEMs. The passenger vehicle tyre segment has been a steady performer. It has witnessed a moderate 4 to 5 pc growth rate. Two-wheelers unfortunately have not done so well, particularly motorcycle tyre segment because of various factors at play. So also the farm sector, this too has not done well. We hope that recovery will set in, in these two segments. But on the whole, I would say a challenging year and a stable year. The uncertainties and pressures have not eased. Has the size of the Indian tyre industry changed in 2015-16 in terms of revenues?

we are in a very serious deficit situation, with domestic rubber just being able to cover around 55pc to 60pc of the total demand for rubber, for the remaining 40 to 45pc we have no other choice but to be dependent on imports. Such imports are coming in at duty levels which are probably the highest in the world. As far as rubber consuming segment is concerned, I think it is going to be under tremendous pressure both in the availability side and also on the price front which will definitely be higher than what the competition is going to access outside the country.

We are looking at an industry turnover of about Rs 50,000 crore which has remained more or less flat. It was around the same level in 2014-15. This is mainly because the commodities have been on the softer side like rubber and other raw materials. The turnover has really not grown but in numbers and volumes it has grown. Indian tyre imports have grown. How much of that would you attribute to dumping by countries like China? If you have to assess imports, particularly in the commercial vehicle segment, today I think 90pc of commercial vehicle tyres (truck and bus radials) imports are coming from one country that is China. That is an area of big concern for the industry because most of the tyres that are coming in are in the dumped category. The prices at which the imports are coming are so low that they

64 | MOTOWN INDIA | JULY 2016

are not even adequate to cover the cost of raw materials. You have a very serious and challenging situation here as one is competing against imports which are at prices that are so slow that even the raw material costs are not covered. We would like the government to address this at the earliest. What about prices of rubber and crude oil, how are they influencing the tyre industry? Prices of raw materials whether it is upwards or downwards, have a lag effect on the industry. When prices are dropping there is a time lag between what happens on the raw material front and what happens on the tyre side. Similarly, when the raw material prices start moving up, there is a certain lag that takes place. Particularly in the Indian tyre industry, commodity prices have bottomed out whether it is rubber, synthetic rubber, etc. In the case of rubber since

There is good news on the monsoon front in the country. Does that bode well for the tyre industry? Monsoons have a very direct and significant impact on the tyre industry. Not just in terms of direct consumption of tyres, but also in terms of movement of agricultural produced from place to another. A whole lot of chain effects set in with good monsoons-rural demand picks up, pressure son two wheeler segment, the farm segment, they tend to ease. We have already gone through two consecutive years of below average rainfall. With good monsoons, not only the demand from the rural segment would trigger, but also as a ripple effect it would have a very positive impact on the tyre industry. All segments within the tyre industry, be it the commercial vehicle segment, the two wheeler segment, farm segment or the entry level passenger vehicle segment, they are all going to be positively impacted on the back of a good monsoon. ‘Make in India’ loses sheen in auto components industry; Records degrowth in exports

India a key growth market for Bosch Two-Wheeler & Powersports

For the first time in five years, “Make in India” lost some of its sheen in the Indian auto components industry as imports increased dramatically and exports recorded a negative growth. Exports recorded (-) 3.7pc growth at US $ 10.8 billion in 2015-16, as compared to the previous financial year exports of $ 11.2 billion. But what was a little alarming was the fact that imports recorded a growth of 1.8pc at $ 13.8 billion, surpassing the figures of exports. Overall in dollar terms, the Indian auto components industry grew by 1.3pc, recording a turnover of $39 billion, as compared to $38.5 billion the previous year. Even though the industry may have lost out on the exports front in dollar terms, thanks to a weak rupee against the US dollar, the Indian auto component industry exports actually recorded a positive growth in rupee terms. Coming to exports, it was a thumbs down for Indian auto components in several regions like Africa, Asia, Europe, New Zealand & Australia and South America. The only regions that saw a positive growth in exports were Central America and North America. In Africa, there was a 14pc drop in exports from $ 817 million in 2014-15 to $ 699 million. In Asian region, exports dropped 3pc from $2798 million to $ 2722 million. In Europe the drop was 6pc from $4125 million to $ 3866 million. The industry recorded a 2pc drop in exports in New Zealand & Australia from $80 million in 2014-15 to $78 million in 2015-16. South America recorded a degrowth of 19pc, from $546 million to $ 444 million.

Bosch has proactively been working in India with its two-wheeler customers to offer antilock braking system (ABS). ABS will be a mandatory requirement for all two-wheeler above 125cc beginning April 2018 in India. For Bosch India, this is a reinforcement of the life-saving potential of safety systems like ABS. Commenting on the scope of the two-wheeler business, Geoff Liersch, Head of Bosch Business Unit TwoWheeler & Powersports, said, “India is a key market for two-wheelers. Developments taking place here have the potential to influence other emerging markets, such as Indonesia and Thailand, where small two-wheelers also count as important means of transportation. Additionally, India also presents us with an opportunity to develop innovative solutions tailored to the need of emerging markets.”

Lamborghini inaugurates new carbon fibre research centre in US Automobili Lamborghini has announced the opening of its new Seattle-based carbon fibre research facility, the Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory (ACSL). Operating as an entity outside of the company’s headquarters in Sant’Agata Bolognese, the ACSL is responsible for unlocking new potential in carbon fibre. The breakthroughs that take place here go on to influence developments in Lamborghinis of the future. The official grand opening of the new ACSL also marks the 30th anniversary of Lamborghini’s use of carbon fibre reinforced polymer in its vehicles. “Carbon fibre is a material that Lamborghini has a long history with. Starting with the Countach Quattrovalvole and continuing today, it is one of the most important keys to the success of our cars in the past, present and future,” said Stefano Domenicali, Automobili Lamborghini Chief Executive Officer. Seattle is a strategic location for the ACSL, particularly because of its collaboration with Boeing in working toward carbon fibre innovations that are beneficial in both automotive and aerospace applications. “Seattle is a nexus for innovation and Lamborghini’s choice to base its carbon fibre research centre here reflects

that,” Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee said, adding that “Lamborghini’s Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory, their continued success in developing breakthrough technology, and their collaboration with Boeing is a benefit and a point of pride for the city and the state of Washington.” Forged Composite is one of the most important developments to come from research within the ACSL which shortens the amount of production time required to form components by comparison the traditional labour techniques. The technology made its debut in 2010 with the Sesto Elemento limited series supercar where it served in a structural capacity and as proof of how capable the rapid-formed material is. Such continued refinements in the manufacturing process have allowed Lamborghini to enhance its finished product for structural and aesthetical application in 2013. “By continuing to develop our patented Forged Composite materials, we are able to create a product that can enhance

Lamborghini super sports cars in both their performance and their appearance,” said Maurizio Reggiani, Board Member, R&D. “The ability to leverage this kind of lightweight material gives Lamborghini an advantage that will benefit our cars – as well as production process - in the future,” he added. Lamborghini’s dedication to leading the industry in carbon fibre innovation goes beyond material development through the ACSL to find and recruit young, talented engineers from around the world. Lamborghini debuted the

latest car to showcase its mastery of carbon fibre during the 2016 Geneva Motor Show. The Centenario, which was on display for the exclusive event, is available in a body made of fully exposed carbon fibre. Meant to mark what would have been company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini’s 100th birthday, the Centenario is a marriage between acknowledgements of past milestones and technological “firsts.” Appropriately, it is only available in a very limited production run of 20 coupes and 20 Roadsters.
