T
his issue of Motown India magazine has a special report on the Indian luxury cars market. The 9-page report delves into the growth of this segment and the performance of the several players here. It is obvious that the three big German brands –Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW—are
dominating this space with their cars. While Mercedes is doing the best in terms of annual sales, Audi is a close second and BMW, a distant third. Analysts says that BMW could forge ahead in the sales race in India in a year or so. Apart from this troika, there are others like Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo who are slowly catching up. JLR is part of Tata Motors and produces some of its models in the country like the way the German companies are doing. Volvo Auto India, on the other hand does not have an assembly or manufacturing outlet in India and its model offering in India is limited. But it needs to be noted that Volvo is tweaking its business plans globally and will be launching several new models in the small premium cars category in the near future. Besides these premium car brands there are several others too in the super premium segment which comprise of the likes of Bentley, Ferrari, Rolls-Royce, Bugatti, Maserati, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, etc. But these operate through just a couple or more dealerships in the country. Nevertheless, this segment of the luxury car market is also growing. The magazine carries road reviews of some exciting products like the recently launched Audi R8 V10 Plus, the new Maruti Suzuki Alto 800, the Datsun redi-GO and the Indian Roadmaster, a massive tourer motorcycle from Indian Motorcycle. Interesting news from the B2C and B2B worlds fill up the rest of the pages.

remium car maker Volvo Cars, has unveiled two new concept cars that move the Swedish brand in an audacious new direction and mark the official launch of its global small car strategy. The newly-revealed 40 series concepts demonstrate for the first time how Volvo plans to expand into the large and lucrative global market for premium small cars with a range of vehicles that combine bold exterior and interior design with industry-leading connectivity, electrification and autonomous drive technologies. The new concept cars will be the first built around Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which has been specially created for smaller cars and which has liberated the company’s designers and engineers to explore bold and daring new directions.“Each member of our product family has its own distinct character, just like the members of a real family. CMA has helped us to capture something special, something youthful in our new concept cars. They have an

energy, a disruptive and engaging urban character that makes them stand out amongst the crowd. This is the flavour of small Volvos to come,” said Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President, Design, at Volvo Car Group. Volvo’s small car strategy is an essential element in its ongoing global operational and financial transformation. The Swedish company is currently implementing an ambitious revitalisation plan that will reposition the brand to
compete with its global premium competitors within the next four years. Volvo’s new global small car range will include a pure battery electric vehicle as well as Twin Engine plug-in hybrid powertrain variants, in line with the company’s commitment to the electrification of its entire portfolio. Volvo plans to have sold a total of up to 1 million electrified cars by 2025 globally. “By taking a modular approach to both vehicle architecture and powertrain development we have succeeded in leap-frogging many of the players in the premium segment,” said Dr Peter Mertens, Senior Vice President Research & Development. “Our new battery electric powertrain variant opens yet another exciting chapter in the unfolding Volvo story.” On top of their daring exterior design and electrified powertrain options, the new cars will also offer a full range of innovative connectivity services, plus the world’s most advanced standard package of safety features and ground breaking Scandinavian
interior design. “The new 40 series cars have the potential to improve our market penetration in an important growing segment,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and chief executive. “An electric powertrain program including both a new compact Twin Engine plug-in hybrid as well as a pure electric car are central to the CMA architecture, “ he added pointing out that the first new 40 series car is expected to go into production in 2017. The announcement of Volvo’s new global small car strategy comes on the back of a strong start to the year in terms of sales and profitability. The company announced revenues for the first three months of the year rose 24 per cent yearon-year to SEK41.7bn, generating an operating profit of SEK3.1bn and an operating profit margin of 7.5 per cent. Global sales for the first quarter of 2016 increased 11.9 per cent to 120, 591 cars. Volvo has a medium term ambition to sell 800,000 cars a year, up from 503,000 in 2015.

I have time to just a blink a couple of times and I can see the speed-o read 107kmph. It had just been a few seconds since I slammed down the accelerator pedal and the speed just kept climbing. 150-160-170180, None of it made sense to me, either the road was too damn long or could it be possible that this car was moving faster and faster by the second, unlike anything I had perceived. Well believe it or not the Audi R8 V10 Plus is infact that fast, quick and mind bogglingly aggressive to have me sitting there confused, thinking is this actually real. The new Audi is powered by a 5204cc naturally aspirated, 40V, petrol mill which puts out 601.4bhp at 8250rpm and 560Nm of torque at 6500rpm. These numbers aren’t really going to matter so much if you are buying a car of this class. What will matter are the numbers it leads to. Those are a 0-100kmph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 330kmph. But performance is not just about speed it is also about how well that speed can be controlled and the technology that goes behind making a super car actually super in all respects. When it comes to the engine of the Audi R8 V10 Plus, it is not a turbo charged or a super charged engine, despite that fact it is high revving with an almost instant response to driver inputs and has that characteristic sound made by an Audi performance vehicle. The Audi R8 V10 Plus is lightning fast. It’s engine features a cylinder on Demand (COD) technology which basically opens and shuts cylinders in the engine as per driver inputs and needs. The R8’s 10 cylinder engine also comes with a coasting mode, start/ stop system and a dual fuel injection technology. The new version of the R8 also brings in a more refined engine thus reducing fuel consumption by 13pc but if you are behind the wheel of such a brute performer would fuel

consumption really matter? Now the engine has been mated to a 7-Speed auto box which goes around by the name of S-Tronic. The S-Tronic transmission is renowned for lightening fast shifts which are as smooth as butter, even when you have floored the accelerator pedal you won’t feel a single jerk during up-shifts. The previous version of the R8 sported a manual transmission while the new R8 V10 Plus is only be offered with the 7-Speed
Automatic. Unlike the previous version of the car the new one is only being offered with a V10 cylinder configuration and the old V8 has been done away with. Initially when the R8 was introduced to the market it was built on a platform shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo. Now in the year 2016 the R8’s platform has received a major overhaul and update and is know by the name MSS (Modular Sports System). The platform is shared
with Lamborghini’s Huracan. This new MSS platform enables the R8 to shed about 45kgs from the previous version of the car thus making it lighter and faster. Even the centre of gravity of the new R8 is lower than earlier model and thanks to the new high revving V10 engine the new R8 can now redline at 8850rpm. Like the previous model the new R8 comes with an AWD Quattro setup which transmits power and torque to all four wheels. The
Quattro technology enables a fully variable distribution to each axle ranging from 0-100pc and has also equipped this super sports car with a limited slip rear differential. The new R8 also comes with a drive select option and in performance mode one can really go bonkers with the amount of capability that has been engineered into this vehicle, drive select offers the choice between four different driving modes and three additional performance

experience and the vehicles low centre of gravity also caters to a well balanced ride. If a vehicle can achieve breakneck speeds then it must be packed with the right amount of stopping power and the new R8 has enough of it! Braking on this vehicle is facilitated by ceramic disc brakes on all four wheels. Customers can also opt to fit a newly developed electromechanical steering with
a dynamic steering system. The steering on the R8 is accurate and precise, while the vehicle has a turning radius of 5.9m making it decently maneuverable around town and fun to drive. Like a sleek pair of leather shoes is absolutely necessary to complete your look when wearing a tuxedo, a set of admirable tyres and rims is a must have on any sports car. The new R8 V10 Plus sits on 245/ 35 R19 tyres in the front and 295/35 R19 tyres in the rear with all tyres fit in classy looking ten twin spoke alloy wheels. The tyres provide immense grip on tarmac and compliment the already exceptional stability which has been engineered into this vehicle. On the looks front the vehicle has clean and crisp lines which run seamlessly from front to back and has a very sharp design philosophy making it look more edgy and aggressive than ever before. The vehicle also sports two part side blades, Audi’s laser spot headlamps, dynamic
turn signals and aerodynamic design which lends the vehicle exceptional downforce. Once nestled inside the cabin of the R8, the ‘Virtual Cockpit’ design makes you feel more like you are seated at the helm of a spaceship. The three spoke multi function steering plays host to the drive select button, exhaust settings and ignition. a large TFT monitor is placed right infront of the driver to view information like torque, power, oil and tyre temperatures, G-Force and lap time. Other equipment on the R8 is an MMI multimedia infotainment touch system, Audi’s Phone Box and a sound system from Bang and Olufsen. In all departments the new Audi R8 is better than its previous version and just does not cease to amaze. The single variant of the R8 V10 Plus comes with a price tag of Rs.2.5 crore (ex-showroom) which is quite extraordinary but then again this vehicle is not meant for everybody. MI

DATSUN REDI-GO
EASY PEASY LEMON SQUEEZY I Report & Photography: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER
recently read a report which said that India will become the youngest country in the world by the year 2020. Thanks to this overwhelming population and incessant breeding, by 2020 around 64pc of our population will fall in the working age group. When I started my career, despite having big ambitions, my pocket allowed me to buy only something with a budget tag attached to it. So I went ahead and bought a Maruti Alto. That was 7 years back and today people who are entering the job market with big ambitions have plenty more options to choose from. While Maruti has the Alto running its crusades, Renault launched the Kwid last year and on the same platform comes the all new redi-GO from the Datsun stable. We reached the culture rich city of Kolkata to take it for a spin and figure out what defines this pocket friendly car. Following the success of the Kwid in India, Datsun has brought forth a worthy contender. At first sight the redi-GO looks chic and suave. It has smooth and curvy lines running seamlessly from front to back and an overall bold stance. The interiors of the car are also quite exceptional and contemporary. At the heart of the redi-GO is a 799cc petrol motor which also powers the Kwid. The engine produces 53.6bhp @ 5678rpm and 72Nm of torque at 4386rpm. The engine is complimented by the overall dimensions of the car which are small and precise to make the motor feel zippy. The power of the engine lies in the mid range of the band and towards those higher SPECIFICATIONS

revs the vehicle does seem to feel a bit stressed but then again how fast can you drive in the city. The redi-GO is almost 25kgs lighter than the Kwid and returns an average of 25.17kmpl. The overall length of the car stands at 3429mm while the width is 1560mm and the height stands at 1541mm. The redi-GO actually has a very deceptive look and does not look too small. This is probably thanks to a high ground clearance of 185mm which is more than the S-Cross and the Creta! The suspension setup on the Datsun redi-GO is a Mac Pherson Strut with a lower transverse link in the front and a Twist Beam with coil spring in the rear. The suspension has been tuned to be on the stiffer side making the ride over bumps on the road a bit more bearable. The brakes on the redi-GO have been facilitated by discs in the front and drum brakes in the rear. The braking is progressive and the vehicle exudes a lot of confidence in panic braking situations. The turning radius on the Datsun RediGo is 4.73m making it quite maneuverable; in tight corners also the vehicle can get through quite easily. However, we did feel a bit of body roll. The steering wheel is a speed

sensing one which makes it all the more fun to drive. While I was driving around in this vehicle the words ‘easy peasy lemon squeesy’ kept playing in my head because that is the Redi-Go’s style, it can achieve tight turns easily, it is light on the foot, it has an exceptional fuel economy and will definitely be light on the pocket as well. When compared to its length the wheelbase stands at 2348mm, making room for a spacious cabin. The dimensions of the car make it such that it can be easily maneuvered through traffic and fit in to tight parking spaces as well. The clutch of the vehicle is on the lighter side so when stuck in traffic you are not in too much trouble
www.motownindia.com
when it comes to clutching. The gear shifts are also quite precise and the throws are quite short. The Datsun redi-GO has been designed to be an ideal city car and not too much of a highway touring vehicle. The boot space on the redi-GO stands at the 220L mark, it is smaller when compared to some of the other contenders in this segment but then again when using it for traveling in the city it does have sufficient space. The loading lip of the boot however is quite high as the boot is deeper than long. Thus one needs to put in an extra bit of effort to load bigger luggage. The advantage though is that you get to keep a bigger suitcase in that space and
still manage to shut the hatch. This vehicle can seat 5 adults though we felt that the second row can be a bit cramped if you plan to seat three people. On the features front this vehicle is quite bare. The redi-GO has an airbag, a manually adjustable air conditioner, an audio system with USB and AUX inputs, a 12 volt power socket and plenty of cubby holes. The dash has been designed smartly and has suave looking interiors to go with the overall design theme of this car. The build quality and plastics used are quite exceptional and boasts of Datsun’s engineering prowess. The accessories and functional buttons/ knobs have also been laid out in an ergonomically optimised
manner and everything is quite easily accessible. A few things about this vehicle which we did not enjoy too much were the facts that the door panels were naked. But it can be customised to look better. The NVH levels of the car are also a bit of a letdown as noise from the outside and the engine bay does seem to seep in. All in all Datsun seemed to have made a very technically sound and adept vehicle which is quite useful in city driving conditions. The design and styling boasts of freshness and does carry a significant amount of road presence. What remains to be seen is the price which we expect could be around Rs. 2.40 lakh (ex-showroom). MI

FIRST DRIVE 2016 MARUTI SUZUKI ALTO 800
BEST BARGAIN S
Report JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER & Photography: AFSAR BAIG
tandup comedian Russell Peters once said “Indians and Chinese can never get along because Indians can’t live without a bargain and Chinese will never give in to a bargain”. Being an Indian I know the first part of that statement is true. We love to bargain till we are satisfied that we are getting real value for money! While most people feel Maruti is not a premium brand and feel foreign brands give them an elevated status, most people don’t realise that Maruti Suzuki is probably one of the only brands which gives its customers the best value for money. One of the first cars manufactured by Maruti was the 800. It was a common man’s car but as the years passed it was phased out and re-entered the market in a new Avatar known as the Alto 800. The Alto was also one of Maruti’s top sellers but came with better engine performance than the Maruti 800 . However in light of competition and staying contemporary in terms of design, Maruti did away with
the age old 800 and brought in two new offerings on the Alto platform -- the Alto K10 and the Alto 800. The Alto 800 lies in the entry level hatchback segment and is facing stiff competition from the likes of the Renault Kwid. The soon to come Datsun Redi-GO is also expected to give the Alto 800 a tough competition. Maruti Suzuki recently launched the new 2016 facelift version of the Alto 800 and we at Motown India were one of the first to take it for a spin. The new Alto 800 comes with a redesigned facade, the car gets a split front grill like before with the lower section being broader than before and the top slit being made slimmer and sleeker. The headlamp design has also been updated and the car also has redesigned bumpers. Other subtle changes on the car is that it is now 35mm longer than the previous version, while the wheelbase and ground clearance remains the same and the width has been reduced by 25mm. On the inside customers get integrated headrests in the rear seats and fabric inserts in the door trims. The side and rear profiles of

the car however remain almost untouched. The Alto 800 is powered by a 796cc, 3-pot, petrol mill which puts out 47.3bhp at 6000rpm and 69Nm of torque at 3500rpm. The engine output figures are not too impressive but the fuel efficiency figures are mind boggling. The petrol variant of the car returns 24.7kms to the litre and the CNG variant of the car returns 34.4kms to a kilogram of gas. However the addition of a CNG tank does compromise on boot space which is also the least in the segment standing at just 117 litres, while the incoming RediGO has a 220 litre boot and the Kwid has a 300 litre one. But if you want a vehicle which covers more ground on less fuel then this is the best bet in the segment. In terms of build quality the company has made it a constant endeavor to improve standards efficiently. The new Alto 800 rides on a McPherson Strut suspension in the front and a 3 Link Rigid type suspension in the rear. The suspension tuning is ideal for Indian roads,

it handles bumps quite well and the smaller potholes aren’t really a bother however the deeper ones can cause a bit of trouble. The tyres are a 145/80 R12 which grip the road quite well and provide a smooth ride. We carried out a few panic braking exercises and the disc and drum set up fared quite well. The car came to a halt from 80kmph within a matter of

seconds. On the inside the cabin is quite contemporary but is minimalistic with only a few features to entertain the driver. The Alto 800 comes with a 12 volt power socket placed near the steering wheel for easy access, an audio system with inputs for AUX and USB , front speakers, power windows, power steering and manually
adjustable ORVMs. It essentially carries enough kit required by a person to move about with ease. Speaking of ease in commuting this vehicle has a low turning radius of 4.6 meters making it exceptionally maneuverable in city traffic. The seats are also quite comfortable in the car and provide ample support to the occupants. Seating five people in this vehicle
may be a squeeze but four adults can fit in with ease. Maruti has also dropped the price of the Alto 800 by Rs. 10,000 just lending it a more competitive stand against competitors. If a bargain is what you love and want value for every paisa you spend then Rs. 2.5 lakh (ex-showroom) for this vehicle is one of the best deals you will get. MI

HEAVY METAL FIRST RIDE
INDIAN ROADMASTER

eavy Metal. No, this has nothing to do with the 1960s or 1970s rock music and neither has it anything to do with 1980s science fiction fantasy film. This is all about an extremely heavy bike that is easiest to ride on a highway to nowhere that has no sharp turns, no U turns and at best no turns at all! I am talking about the Indian Roadmaster, the massive 1811 cc engine tourer motorcycle that is best ridden by a man the size of either Khali or Magnus Samuelsson. For record’s sake, Khali is 7ft 1 inch tall and weighs approximately 157 kgs, while Samuelsson is 6ft 7 inches tall and weighs 156 kilos. One early morning when I was handed over the bike by a man around my size, I was relieved that this motorcycle can be ridden by ordinary mortals too. The bike has a massive girth and to seat oneself on the motorcycle is an exercise that needs to be done with caution. This bike is surely not meant for anyone and everybody who is keen to go on a long tour. You have got to meet certain physical conditions to ride it. Ideally you should be around the six feet height (I am a couple of inches shorter), needs to be a regular when it comes to pumping iron, should have adequate physical stamina and has to be a very responsible biker. I have ridden some of the mid size bikes, cruisers and baggers from the Indian Motorcycle stable. These include the Indian Scout, Cruisers like the Chief Dark Horse and Chief Classic, Baggers like the Chief Vintage, Indian Chieftain and now the Touring bike, the Indian Roadmaster. What distinguishes the Roadmaster from the crowd is its massive girth. Period. It’s like the Airbus A380 of the motorcycle world. No matter how much of an atheist you are, you have got to say a short prayer before riding this motorcycle. The bike looks mighty and handsome with its two-up seat, lots of chrome and the valanced front fender with the ubiquitous Indian head marker light and a chrome luggage rack at the back, mounted on the trunk.. The 2566mm long, 1000mm wide and 1491mm high Indian Roadmaster is powered by Indian Motorcycle’s proven Thunder stroke 111 engine family. The air cooled 1811cc engine SPECIFICATIONS

(with integrated oil cooler) generates a peak torque of 138.9Nm @2600rpm and enough power (the company has not given the power output figures) to propel the massive frame forward. Getting on to the saddle is the first thing you need to do carefully, lest you trip and go sliding down with the motorcycle. One must remember, the bike weights around 630 kilos, hence it’s not easy handling and picking the Heavy Metal once it tilts to one side. The bike comes with a keyless feature. Starting the bike (the key can be tucked away safely in your jacket) with the aid of a power button that is mounted on to the petrol tank and pressing the switch on the right handle bar, is perhaps the easiest task. Once the gear is shifted upwards, the Roadmaster makes its way like a turbocharged elephant. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission. On hitting the highway, there is no stopping this big machine as it confidently eats up the road at a rapid pace. One can also rely on ABS with single, 300mm floating rotor , 2 piston caliper front brakes and the rear dual, 300mm floating rotor, 4 piston caliper brakes to bring the machine to a halt. The motorcycle rides on 16 inches Dunlop tyres. The machine has a ground clearance 140mm. Being a tourer, the Indian Roadmaster comes with a fuel tank capacity of 20.8 litres and loads of storage space, approximately 142 litres in total. There is storage space in the saddle bags, in the trunk and around the front fairings. LED technology comes with all its lights that include the headlight, fog lights, turn signals, tail light trunk, tail light, trunk interior light, and war bonnet fender light. The fairing mounted instrument cluster features electronic speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge with odometer, dual trip meters with distance and time, instantaneous and

average fuel economy; fuel range; real-time clock; compass; ambient air temperature; gear position display; front and rear tyre pressure; engine hours of operation; engine oil life percentage; average speed; battery voltage; radio information display; vehicle trouble code readout; and 15 LED telltale indicators. Features like cruise control come handy when you take the motorcycle on some very long highways with sparse traffic. The windshield height can be adjusted electronically with a switch near the left handle grip. There is also a 200Watt stereo that can play your radio music and also integrate you smart phone through Bluetooth. A high point of this motorcycle is the generous space for the pillion rider. The pillion rider has the comfort of a large seat with neat hand rests. With adjustable foot boards to boot, the pillion rider can actually go off to sleep and still be assured that he or she will not fall of the moving bike! The Indian Roadmaster has been built with one and only one purpose--- to ride on the highway to nowhere. Yes, this bike may be frustratingly difficult

to handle on narrow roads and tight corners. But give it a broad road and enough shoulder space; it can bring the thrill to your riding. Inter-state travelling can be best on this bike. It has enough power and torque to stay abreast with all kinds of traffic and even when trucks and buses travel along its side you need not get intimidated because the bike with is mammoth size is well planted on the road. But there was a major drawback to the motorcycle we tested. The heat generated by the engine and the subsequent heating up of the exhaust at the
34 | MOTOWN INDIA | JUNE 2016
mouth of the engine was unbearable. As I rode a few kilometers in the summer heat of Delhi, the heat from the engine simply got worse and soon became unbearable. The calf muscles on my right leg almost got scalded because of this heat. Maybe the air cooled engine was not good enough to cool things on a hot Indian summer day! Apart from this heat issue, everything else about the bike is exciting. Ideally best to ride on a winter day, this tourer has all the right attributes to make your long journey very fulfilling! MI

BMW i Berlin ePrix
Post Berlin win, Sebastien Buemi cuts Di Grassi’s lead to 1 point Sebastien Buemi has won the BMW i Berlin ePrix, thereby reducing Lucas di Grassi’s lead in the FIA Formula E Championship to just a single point. This is Buemi’s first win since Punta del Este in December. Earlier in the race he sped his car past polesitter Jean-Eric Vergne (DS Virgin Racing) and built up a comfortable lead. But then the Qualcomm Safety Car was called out to retrieve the stricken Dragon Racing car of Loic Duval. Though this gave the chasing pack a chance to close in, it did not stop Buemi from timing his restart perfectly and pulling away to claim his third win of the season. “The first lap is always a bit tricky because you don’t know how much energy you will consume so basically he was using a lot of energy and I had to decide how much energy I was willing to use in the first laps,” he said adding that “I let him [Vergne] go but after four or five laps he had to save a lot more so I made my move. He closed the door so it was tricky but from then on I focused on building a gap. I was going for the fastest lap with the second car but it was not the
quickest race as when you used a lot of energy you really had to save a lot. In the end I didn’t manage it so I’m a bit disappointed with that as it’s two points, but overall it was a good weekend.” Daniel Abt scored his best result to date with an emotional second place, and received a terrific ovation from large percentage of the 15,000-strong crowd who made their way to the eVillage for the podium celebration. His team mate from Schaeffler Audi Sport, Lucas Di Grassi came in third. As for India’s Mahindra Racing team, Nick Heidfeld came in seventh while his teammate Bruno Senna came in 15th. Both the boys had to start from back because of a tyre pressure infringement. After starting back in eighth place, di Grassi had to fight his way forward, battling hard with Vergne and Nico Prost in particular. He extended his energy an extra lap more than his rivals to lead a lap during the pitstops, which meant he had extra energy to play with in the closing stages, but it wasn’t quite enough to get close to Abt to allow his team-mate to let him through.
“I’m very happy, I started eighth, it was a very tough race,” he said, adding that “Everything against me, including Jean-Eric Vergne on the in-lap and the safety car, but we managed to pass Prost, who made it difficult to overtake but we managed to do another podium and stay in the lead by one point. It couldn’t be closer than that going into London. Now everything is open. London, and London weather, will decide how the championship goes.” Prost held on to fourth to help Renault e.dams extend its lead in the teams’ championship. Vergne damaged his front wing on the chicane, requiring it to be changed, which dropped him to fifth. After a poor qualifying, Andretti’s Robin Frijns drove a great race to fight his way into sixth place. Nick Heidfeld started at the back after his Mahindra Racing entry had its qualifying times removed for incorrect tyre pressures. Like Frijns he charged forward, collecting seventh place in the process. Mike Conway
recorded his best Formula E result to date for Venturi, while Simona de Silvestro was in the points again for Andretti in ninth. Despite being forced to start from the pitlane due to an electrical problem, Stephane Sarrazin maintained his record of scoring points at every race by taking 10th for Venturi. Mahindra’s Bruno Senna, who lost his best-ever qualifying position of fourth for a similar tyre pressure infringement to Heidfeld’s, bagged the two bonus points for the Visa Fastest Lap. The sell-out race was deemed a huge success, especially given the incredible short period in which it was arranged. Berlin Senator Cornelia Yzer said: “The FIA Formula E Championship electrified and won Berlin over with an acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in three seconds. The race in the heart of the city was a spectacular event that not just excited the thousands of fans on Karl-Marx-Allee, but it also thrilled the millions of spectators in front of the TV screens all over the world.” The championship concludes in London on July 2 and 3.

Meeke was back in the championship after missing the previous two rallies in the Americas. This was his second success after victory in Argentina last year. Thirty-six-year-old Meeke followed Sébastien Ogier, JariMatti Latvala and Hayden Paddon onto the top step of the WRC podium this year after building a lead of almost a minute during the first part of the rally and measuring his pace through the final day-and-a-half. He took the lead in the second stage on Friday morning and remained troublefree on the rocky mountain roads in the north of the country, making the most of clean, grippy conditions courtesy of a low start position. “It was nearly a perfect

weekend, a text book performance. It’s another step for me as a driver. This year is all about gathering experience and I couldn’t have done any more. We’ll use these rallies this year for our benefit and try to mount a title challenge next year,” said Meeke, who is driving a partprogramme as Citroën develops a new car for 2017. Meanwhile, after an overlycautious opening day, a rejuvenated Andreas Mikkelsen upped his pace to grab second from team-mate and championship leader Sébastien Ogier. Set-up changes to his Volkswagen Polo R inspired the Norwegian who won Sunday’s opening two stages and finished 4.8sec ahead. Ogier suffered two punctures on the last day. With just one spare wheel in his Polo R, he compromised his pace to ensure he completed the final Power Stage and reach the Matosinhos finish after topping up one of the
flat tyres with air. Dani Sordo finished fourth after his hopes of a podium ended yesterday due to stability issues with the rear of his Hyundai i20. Eric Camilli claimed a careerbest fifth in only his fifth start in a World Rally Car. The Frenchman had a broken handbrake in his Ford Fiesta RS today and a final stage spin almost allowed JariMatti Latvala to catch him. The gap was 5.3sec. Latvala completed the rally with blistered and bandaged hands after wrestling his Polo R through the twisty mountains on Friday with broken power steering. Mads Østberg was almost three minutes behind in seventh in another Fiesta RS after downshifting problems and a broken driveshaft cost several minutes. Martin Prokop, WRC 2 winner Pontus Tidemand and Nicolas Fuchs completed the leaderboard. Rain on the previous night had
upped the jeopardy, resulting in drivers being faced with muddy, low-grip stages on the final day of the event. Meeke pushed hard from the moment the rally began, building up a lead of over one minute by the end of the second day. His recent absence from the Championship didn’t seem to be an issue, as he was able to use his road position to his advantage, consistently clearing stages quickly and without drama while other drivers were hindered by punctures and damage from the unforgiving roads. His pace lessened over the final two days in the name of preserving the car and ensuring he made to the finish (he crashed out of this event last year) but the gap would still prove too big to close for his rivals. He completed the rally in 3:59:01.0. The win is the second of Meeke’s career and also his first in Portugal.

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Jorge Lorenzo continued his momentum at the Autodromo del Mugello track on Sunday (May 22, 2016) as he secured a brilliant victory in the Gran Premio d’Italia. His achievement marks the Yamaha Factory Racing team’s hundredth premier class win of the modern fourstroke era, that began in 2002, as well as their third consecutive first place of the 2016 season.
Valentino Rossi also gave a stunning performance in the early stages of the 24-lap sprint as he battled with his teammate for the lead, until a mechanical issue on lap nine prevented him from completing the race. During the race Andrea Iannone hit 354.9km/h, setting a new top speed record in the MotoGP World Championship. The Autodromo del Mugello circuit was filled with thousands
of fans who gathered to see the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP riders continue their 2016 MotoGP World Championship challenge. Jorge Lorenzo rode his signature race, leading over the line on each lap, to take a flawless victory at the Gran Premio d’Italia. Teammate and local hero Valentino Rossi was also in contention for a strong result, but was unable to finish the race due to a technical failure.
Lorenzo was quick to make his intentions clear and had a flying start from fifth place on the grid to take the holeshot. With his teammate on his tail, he led across the line after the first lap, but it soon became clear his fellow Yamaha rider would not go down without a fight. The Doctor made a pass going into turn one, but Lorenzo was not shaken and quickly regained the lead as the Italian ran wide.
Binder makes it three in a row in Moto3 race; Podium joy for Mahindra Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Ajo) beat Di Giannantonio and Bagnaia with a perfect last lap on Sunday (May 22, 2016) at the Gran Premio d’Italia Moto3 World Championship race. Aspar Mahindra rider Pecco Bagnaia took a third podium finish in the sixth race of the 2016 season, finishing only seven hundredths of a second from a first race win after 20 breath-taking laps in Sunday’s thrilling Italian
GP.Run at the magnificent Mugello circuit in a scenic mountainous setting outside Florence, the race was an epically close battle. Every lap looked like the first, as a pack of 20 or more riders ran into the first corner four or five abreast. Shoving, scraping and scrapping, the order changed constantly in a spectacular display of world class racing for the capacity crowd. Second Aspar Mahindra rider

Jorge Martin was part of the pack, running as high as eighth place several times, but crossing the line 14th. He was still just two seconds away from the winner in the thick of the brawl: the first 21 finishers were within five seconds of winner Brad Binder (KTM). Mahindra has a perfect 2016 points record; and Bagnaia’s third time in third place lifted him to fifth overall in the points.

Finally after several days of gruelling ride across the Moroccan desert, the Afriquia Merzouga Rally saw Kevin Benavides (Honda) winning the rally followed by Stefan Svitko (KTM), second and Adrien Van Beveren (Yamaha), third. It was a strong emotional moments for all the competitors, from the first of the Pro rider to the last of the amateurs. With this victory, the Argentinean also won a free registration for the next Dakar. The Afriquia Merzouga Rally concluded with the final stage held near the town of Erfoud. The riders had to complete
a double loop in Motocrossstyle before turning off the engines after 1,500 demanding kilometres through the Moroccan desert. The “motocross style start with one line of riders per category gave an extra boost of adrenaline to the fifth and final day of the rally: two loops of 37 km at the Yasmina dry lake for a 100% off road stage in the big dunes of Erg Chebbi and Erg Merzouga. Wrapping up the sixth day of competition in the dunes of Morocco in the best possible way, Adrien Van Beveren crossed
the finish line of the final stage having posted the absolute fastest time for the day. With this stage victory solidifying his third position in the overall standings, the Frenchman celebrated a career first podium result in rally competition after leading the efforts of the Yamalube Yamaha Official Rally Team at the seventh edition of the Merzouga Rally. Meanwhile for the Hero Motorsports Team Rally,
Joaquim Rodrigues used all his skills as a former Motocross specialist to place his Hero 450 in fifth place in the final 5th stage. The Portuguese rookie finished his very first rally in ninth position overall - a great result for a rider who has never competed in such difficult circumstances. His Indian teammate CS Santosh has raced in Africa before, but never the Merzouga. Santosh ended his week in the top twenty overall and the final stage in 22nd.

n the bad old days, two words were often considered taboo – Sex and Luxury. In a conservative India, talking about sex was a big “No”. Equally, in a socialist driven economy, the term “Luxury” was pure blasphemy. But in modern India, these words have become a way of life. Sex is glamorised, worshipped and flaunted. So is luxury. Be it gadgets, watches, homes, clothes, travel, there is an element of luxury everybody yearns for. And when it comes to luxury cars, Indians are beginning to step out

Report: MOTOWN INDIA BUREAU and shop for them. Many brands led Mercedes, BMW and Audi have flocked to Indian shores and have found success. Other luxury and super luxury brands too are not far behind in setting up shop here in terms of a few dealerships. These include the likes of Bentley, Bugatti, Rolls Royce, Porsche, Aston Martin, Maserati, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo , Ferrari and Lamborghini, among others. But will this market for luxury cars grow? Yes and No. Yes, if there is a level playing field for growth. No, if silly macroeconomic fundamentals are simply
pushed under the carpet. A case in point is the recent ban on diesel cars with engine capacities of 2000cc and above in Kerala and Delhi NCR. A lot of luxury car brands (premium, luxury and super luxury) were affected by this ban. Luxury car brands operating in India sold approximately 35,300 units in 2015. The top three luxury car makers in India are MercedesBenz India, Audi India and BMW India, followed by Jaguar Land Rover and Volvo Auto India. According to the latest sales forecast from IHS Automotive, a global research and analysis company, luxury vehicle sales in
India are expected to more than double in the next five years. In 2015, luxury vehicle sales in the Indian market stood at nearly 35,300 units. This is expected to grow to 87,300 units by 2020 with significant volumes being added by existing players apart from new entrants like Lexus, Infiniti, and Genesis brands. Despite a wider participation by other luxury brands, the three German brands are expected to control more than 80% of the Indian luxury vehicle market in 2020, according to IHS Automotive forecasts. The figures may sound exciting but then compare it to that of

China, we may as well suck our thumbs in gloom. BMW and MINI together sold 463,736 vehicles in 2015 in China. In the same year, Audi AG recorded 570,899 vehicles. With sales of 373,459 cars in 2015, China became the largest single market for Mercedes. Analysts at IHS Automotive forecast that Mercedes’ luxury car sales worldwide will exceed those of BMW this year. The total sales of MercedesBenz in the first quarter (Janmarch 2016) globally reached 483,487, topping BMW’s 478,743 cars. As for Audi it sold 455,750 vehicles in the first three months of this year.
THE GROWTH OF LUXURY CARS IN INDIA According to IHS Automotive, luxury vehicle sales in 2015 marked a growth of 6.4% year on year (y/y) from nearly 33,200 units sold in 2014. The market was almost entirely led by Mercedes Benz which won back the leadership position from Audi by selling nearly 12,900 units in the year. A slew of model launches and a strategy to focus on compact vehicles such as A- and B-Class led the surge in Mercedes’ annual sales. This contrasted with tepid growth rates for Audi and BMW. While Audi’s sales increased 1.9% y/y to 11,100 units in 2015, BMW continued to languish at
LUXURY CARS SPECIAL
third spot as sales grew 2% y/y to 7,500 units. Although Audi and BMW underperformed the country’s luxury market, their performance was better than competition as Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Volvo, and Mini posted sales declines during the year. In the immediate future, according to IHS Automotive , Audi and BMW are expected to shed their underperformance and gain some ground from MercedesBenz which is the most impacted of the lot from the conditional ban on diesel vehicles in the national capital region (NCR). While volume models by Audi and BMW have smaller engines, none of the models sold by Mercedes-Benz in India is powered by engine honouring this threshold (below 2000cc diesel engine capacity). As a result, BMW and Audi are expected to post double-digit sales jumps of 37.9% and 18.5% respectively. Majority of BMW’s growth is expected to come from compact models such as 1-Series and X1 sport utility vehicle (SUV). Similarly, Audi is likely to gain on the basis of A3 and A4 sedans, although sales of its Q3 SUV are expected to be dented by renewed competition from BMW’s latest-generation X1. On the other hand, the regulatory development is likely to result in 6.6% y/y contraction in sales volumes for Mercedes-Benz.

According to IHS Automotive forecasts, the market will see a wider participation of luxury brands in the next five years even though the traditional leaders are expected to maintain their lead. Important among the new entrants will be Lexus, Infiniti, and Genesis. Making further inroads will also be Porsche and Volvo in the coming years. Nevertheless, the market will continue to be driven by the German marquees which are expected to further cement their position in the market. The next phase of growth in the Indian market will be driven by retail network expansion by luxury automakers beyond the metropolitan areas as well as in other operations including finance. This will be coupled with increasing product localization which is expected to offer the German majors a competitive advantage over their newlyentering competitors. IHS Automotive also notes that in terms of body styles, the market is going to witness a rich mix of hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and even MPVs. Lluxury hatchbacks are expected to gain market share from its established competitors – sedans and SUVs. Luxury hatchbacks are a relatively new addition to India’s product mix. This means sedans - which account for more than half of the current luxury vehicle sales
– will account for only 44.2p% in 2020. Another interesting trend is that SUVs, while managing volume growth, will lose market share to hatchbacks and will see contribution declining to 31.5% in 2020 from 35.2% in 2015. In the same timeframe, hatchbacks are expected to account for 17.2% of the luxury market, up massively from just 6.5% in 2015. While Mercedes-Benz has taken a lead here with its A- and B-Class hatchbacks, Audi and BMW will also come up with their competing nameplates. Playing an important role in Audi’s revival will be the new compact models including Q2 SUV and A1 hatchback which are scheduled to be introduced in 2017 and 2018 respectively. On the other hand, BMW will gain from the introduction of next-generation 1-Series which will be offered in hatchback and sedan form, says the IHS Automotive report.
BMW POISED TO OUTDO COMPETITION IN 2016 In the meantime, according to Mumbai-based TRA Research (formerly Trust Research Advisory), BMW has been ranked the highest on ‘Buying Propensity’ in the luxury four-wheeler category, Buying Propensity is comprised of Brand Trust and Brand Attractiveness, that measure need and desire based

transactions, as per the research firm. Buying Propensity represents the consumers’ keenness to buy an aspect BMW serves high on. In the Buying Propensity race BMW is followed by its German counterparts Audi at 2nd place and by Daimler-owned arch-rival Mercedes Benz in 3rd place. Commenting on BMW’s high Buying Propensity, N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research (a Comniscient Group company) stated, “The two matrices of Trust and Attractiveness stand at either end of the Buying Propensity axis, along which all buying decisions are expressed. If Buying Propensity is high, one can expect actual buying to increase as Buying Propensity precedes actual
buying decisions. After a record of being at the top in sales for the last ten years BMW’s fall may only be temporary. BMW’s current strategy to redefine premium customer experience and their high Buying Propensity makes it a brand to watch out for in the coming year.” ‘Buying Propensity’ of a brand is a concept that is the confluence of the matrices of Trust and Attractiveness, developed over years of research with psychologists, sociologists and communication experts. The Buying Propensity report is generated based on the data collected from 5000 influencers who are interviewed each year across 16 Indian cities. Brand Trust and Brand Attractiveness are the
two globally acclaimed proprietary matrices of TRA Research, a Comniscient Group company.
MERCEDES BENZ INDIA This German stellar automotive manufacturer has followed an aggressive path in India and after Audi India dethroned BMW to become numero uno in 2013, it lost pole position to Mercedes in January 2015. The tri star brand brought out as many as 15 models in 2015 and their state of the art design language coming in the form of the CLA and GLA brought it to second position in terms of global sales as well. Relentless in their ways Mercedes ended up selling as many as 13,502 units by the end of 2015 making them the top selling brand in the
country. Mercedes has already lined up new launches this year which began with the launch of their GLS SUV and the soon to come GLC and S-Class cabriolet. Currently the car manufacturer has 16 vehicles in its portfolio with the most expensive being their Maybach S-600 Guard.
AUDI INDIA Audi began its conquest of the Indian market in the year 2004 and set up the Audi India division in 2007. By the year 2013 Audi was the most selling luxury car brand in India. Despite losing its top spot to Mercedes Benz in 2015, Audi India has maintained a growth rate of 3pc year on year in 2015 by selling 11,192 vehicles as compared to 10,851 in 2014.

INTERVIEW WITH JOE KING, Head, Audi India The Indian luxury car market has been growing at a steady pace in the last few years. Do you feel that this growth will pick up or at least remain positive for the coming years? Or is it again dependent on macro economic factors? In the past few years, the luxury car market in India has seen a tremendous spurt in growth. The emergence of a more ambitious middle class with increased purchasing power, that understands, values and aspires to own a luxury brand like ours, is significantly contributing to the transformation of the luxury landscape in the country. The Indian customer is very optimistic and has a lot of aspirations. We see a clear trend that achievers from all walks of life want to associate with a winning brand like Audi. We see a very young profile of buyers coming in. The average age of an Audi buyer is 30-35 years old. Infact, our young customer base is a very big strength. Young professionals and executives, first generation entrepreneurs who look forward to treating themselves
with a nice luxury car are increasingly associating with us. Moreover, luxury enthusiasts in smaller cities are the ones who are converting into customers really quickly as they are the ones with really big pockets, are well informed and aware of brands and their value as a person living in a metro. With attractive finance schemes and new customers upgrading to entry level luxury cars, the potential is immense. We provide our customers several attractive service offerings, insurance, finance and a complete ownership experience under our Audi Car Life programme. This has made our vehicles even more attractive and accessible to Audi fans. Going ahead, our strategy will be focused on showcasing the brand’s commitment to offer our customers an unparalleled luxury experience of class defining products and world class services through experiential drives and marketing initiatives.
The company also brought forth 10 new products in the year 2015 including their R8 LMX, TT, S5 Sportback and the new Q7. The company has followed a top down approach and brought in some of their premium luxury and performance cars to the country. Audi India has a wide line up of vehicles in the Indian market ranging from sedans to SUVs and top end performance vehicles. The company also maintains a synergy in the technology used in their top of the line products which can also be found in their entry level vehicles, a good example of this is the Audi MMI display. The Indian market has remained price sensitive to a great extent and affordable quality has been the driving force behind Audi’s campaign in India. Their most
expensive vehicle on offer in the market is the A8 L Security edition which comes with an earth shattering ex-showroom price tag of Rs. 9.2 crore. Audi India recently launched their R8 V10 Plus which is one of the most capable sports cars available in the Indian market today.
BMW INDIA This German stalwart has been the leading manufacturer of luxury cars globally in terms of sales since 2005. BMW surpassed Mercedes in terms of sales in the Indian market in 2007 to become to the number one selling luxury car brand in India. BMW retained top spot till 2013 when it was replaced by Audi. The company has been witnessing a global slowdown in terms of sales and

Several players have entered the luxury car segment in India and many more are expected to enter this segment. What are the key factors to remain successful in this industry? Audi has built a strong foundation for the future. Currently we have a base of over 50,000 customers, 90 customer touchpoints, more than 40 product launches in last nine years (including all variants and
reported the slowest growth in sales since 2009 for the year 2015. BMW India has been growing its line up by introducing a mixture of luxury SUVs and sedans as well as performance vehicles. When it comes to performance vehicles BMW has one of the most unique offerings in the segment in the form of a thorough bred electric hybrid vehicle which goes around by the name of i8. While BMW does display its advanced engineering capabilities through the i8 it also makes more affordable and practical cars, the range starts with the BMW 1 Series which is priced at Rs. 29.9 lakh (ex-showroom). JAGUAR LAND ROVER The Jaguar and Land Rover brands owned by Tata Motors set up shop in India in 2009. While the company has faced two years of flat lined sales for 2014 and 2015 selling almost 3,000 units each year, 2016 saw the company posting strong sales figures for the first quarter. JLR sold more than 1,000 units in the first quarter of 2016 and registered a growth of 45pc. Power Study 2015, Audi has scored the highest among other manufacturers in customer satisfaction index. Leadershipis not just sales volumes; it’s about having good quality service, customer interaction and a strong brand pull. For the Indian market, the strategy has to be right and ours has been on track. We will continue to follow this strategy: - Having the right product mix: Offering the best of mobility through latest products relevant for India. One of our key strengths has been our deep understanding of the Indian customer and the market. - Wide dealership & aftersales service network: Better accessibility to the brand by increasing geographical penetration. We’ve invested with partners who own their territory. We have a market area concept where the dealers can expand and a lot of them have. For example our dealer in Gujarat is now about to open his fourth showroom with us in Rajkot. We always look for experts in the field, who have a great connection in the market
and understand the market very well. We have developed a strategy to not to have the biggest network, but to have the best invested network. Audi has already established itself as the luxury choice for young achievers, taking this a step higher is yet another first in the form of the Audi Mobile Terminal (AMT), which brings the showroom right to the customer’s doorstep. This is where the next phase of growth will come from and we are now future-ready. - Well-trained personnel for customer service: We have invested extensively in training. Our customer facing staff at our dealerships is globally certified by AUDI AG. - Progressive Customer Connect Initiatives: We have a continuous commitment to enrich customer experience and enhance customer loyalty. On social media, we have a very strong interaction with our fans, with a strong following on Facebook and Twitter. We do a lot in terms of direct interaction through drive experiences. experience programs (Audi Q Drive, Audi Women’s Power Drive, Audi Multicity experience, Audi sportscar experience, among others) along with Audi Club India for our existing customers, have contributed immensely towards sustaining brand loyalty. Last year, we had more than 7000 participants in these drives. With regards to your company what is the current level of local manufacturing? Do you plan to expand operations here in India, both in terms of local manufacturing and also setting up new dealerships across tier I and II cities? We already have a significant capacity currently. Of the total volumes sold in India in 2015, more than 95 percent of the cars were built locally. Currently, we assemble the Audi A3 sedan, Audi A4, Audi A6, Audi Q3, Audi Q5 and Audi Q7 at the Aurangabad plant. The Indian market is very much at the forefront of AUDI AG’s thinking. The important thing is that the foundations are in place
to handle the dynamics of an emerging market. It’s a marathon where you have to get the fundamentals right. It is a bit like the government policies, you can be populist and push to become No.1 and say hey that’s great. But at the end of the day, it’s got to be sustainable, it’s got to be profitable and it’s got to have a strong foundation. On the network front, we will expand the network customer touchpoints to 101 including dealerships, service facilities and Audi Approved: plus showrooms in 2016. We will also continue to roll with the Audi Mobile Terminal (Audi showroom on wheels) especially in tier 2 and 3 cities where we do not have a customer touchpoint, and will visit around twenty cities this year. Another key strategy for us is going to be a vital business in the years to come with our used car business _ Audi Approved: plus. Audi is recognized as having the strongest resale value for our product which is very important when we look at maintaining customers for life.
18-20pc. Jaguar also launched the new XE at the 2016 Auto Expo with a very aggressive price tag of just Rs. 39.9 lakh (ex-showroom). Keeping in mind that India is a price sensitive market the company plans to go head to head with the big three by aggressively pricing their products. At present JLR holds a market share of close to 10pc for the luxury car segment in India and plans to further expand that to 20pc in the coming years. At present Jaguar is retailing 4 models in the Indian market while Land Rover has 6 models on offer. The latest from Jaguar is the XE which has effectively opened up a new market for the Jaguar brand and brings in a new customer base for the company as well. While the XE is the most affordable in the Jaguar line up the F-Type is their blue blooded contender with a hefty price tag of Rs. 1.9 crore (ex-showroom). The Land Rover brand has vehicles in its Indian portfolio which range from Rs. 34.9 lakh (exshowroom) to Rs. 3.8 crore (ex-showroom). The Freelander 2 from Land Rover is the most affordable product in the portfolio and features the brands rich engineering and design heritage. One of the more

NEWS Global NCAP trashes Indian cars that have passed valid Indian tests The New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP), a non profit organisation registered in the UK, has come out with a crash test which says that cars like the Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Maruti Suzuki Eeco, Mahindra Scorpio and Hyundai Eon have all failed to protect the adult occupants. Even while the manufacturers of these cars are following every safety standard set by the Government of India and clearing every test set forth by bodies like ARAI, ICAT and others, the people behind Global NCAP have trashed the cars based on tests done abroad in conditions that may or may not be conducive to that in India. The latest Indian crash test results from Global NCAP released in Delhi say that all five models are rated as zero star. These models included the Renault Kwid, Maruti Suzuki Celerio, Maruti Suzuki Eeco, Mahindra Scorpio and Hyundai Eon. All these models showed low levels of adult occupant protection. The Renault Kwid was tested in three versions, including one with airbags, but each was rated as zero star for adult safety. Commenting on the latest crash test results, David Ward, Secretary General of Global NCAP said, “The latest SaferCarsforIndia results show how important it is for cars to have a body shell that can remain stable in a crash. This is an absolutely crucial pre-requisite for occupant safety together with fitment at least of front air bags. It is very surprising that a manufacturer like Renault introduced the Kwid initially lacking this essential feature. Global NCAP strongly believes that no manufacturer anywhere in the world should be developing new models that are so clearly sub-standard. Car makers must ensure that their new models

pass the UN’s minimum crash test regulations, and support use of an airbag. “We welcome Renault’s efforts to correct this and we look forward to testing another improved version with airbags. Renault has a strong record of achievement in safety in Europe and it should offer the same commitment to its customers in India.” Ward was speaking during the Indian Automobile Safety Conference hosted by IRTE in Faridabad. “The results highlight the importance of the Indian Government’s decision to mandate front and side impact crash tests from October 2017. Legislative action is needed to ensure that the minimum levels of occupant protection recommended by the United Nations are guaranteed for Indian consumers. But manufacturers don’t have to wait for legislation and we urge them to act to eliminate all zero star cars from production as soon as possible. Global NCAP also welcomes the forthcoming launch of a Bharat New Car Assessment Programme which can help build a market for safer cars in India,” Ward noted. Mahindra & Mahindra in a press statement noted that “All Mahindra automotive products are developed and manufactured to meet or exceed the safety standards set in India for a safe driving experience. In fact, many models exceed the expected regulations of 2019. The star rating as released by Global NCAP (GNCAP) in the latest crash test was conducted on non-airbags variant of the Scorpio. Typically, in any star rating process, non-airbag variants do not perform well on safety standards. Most variants of the Scorpio are equipped with airbags and a safety package. Approximately 75% of Scorpio customers choose the air bags variants of the vehicle. There

RENAULT KWID The Global NCAP tested the standard version of the Kwid without airbags. It scored zero stars in adult occupant protection and two stars in child occupant protection. The collapse of the structure in the passenger compartment and the lack of airbags explained the poor result. Following safety improvements Renault proposed that Global NCAP test an updated evolution of the Kwid in production from early April 2016. The car was tested with and without an airbag. The new Kwid without an airbag scored zero stars in the adult occupant protection and two stars in child occupant protection. The structure did not collapse however it was rated as unstable and that it could not withstand further loadings. It was possible to see the structural reinforcements implemented in this version of the Kwid but when Global NCAP checked the left (passenger) side, there were no reinforcements. The structure was
reinforced only on the driver side. The new Kwid with the addition of driver airbag was also tested. This version also scored zero stars in the adult occupant protection and two stars in child occupant protection. The structure was the same as the new KWID without airbags but a high compression in the dummy chest area explains the low score. Renault has confirmed that they will implement further improvements to the KWID and Global NCAP will test these new evolutions in forthcoming crash tests, a release from GNCAP said.
MAHINDRA SCORPIO Mahindra Scorpio scored zero stars in the adult occupant protection and two stars in child occupant protection. The collapse of the structure combined with the lack of airbags explains the score for the adult occupants protection which means that there is high probability of life threatening injuries for at least one of the adult passengers.
SUZUKI MARUTI EECO The non airbag Eeco scored zero stars in the adult occupant protection and one star in child occupant protection. The collapse of the structure in the passenger compartment and the lack of
Mahindra Scorpio airbags explained the poor result in adult occupant protection. This model does not offer optional airbags. Considering the structural collapse airbags are not likely to help avoid life threatening injuries to the driver.
HYUNDAI EON The Hyundai Eon is offered in the standard version without airbags. It scored zero stars in the adult occupant protection and two stars in child occupant protection. The unstable structure in the passenger compartment and the lack of airbags explained the poor result in adult occupant protection.
SUZUKI MARUTI CELERIO The non airbag Maruti Suzuki Celerio scored zero stars in adult
occupant protection and one star in child occupant protection. The lack of airbags explained the poor result in adult occupant protection. The low score in child occupant protection is explained by the high values recorded in the 3 year old child dummy as well as its forward excursion beyond the accepted limits. As a result of Global NCAP’s SaferCarsforIndia crash testing Renault has sought to improve the safety performance of the Kwid. Four versions of the Kwid have been produced with different safety features, with the fourth only recently released and yet to be tested by Global NCAP. Despite the safety improvements Renault has sought to introduce all of the versions tested to date have been rated as zero star for adult protection.

NEWS NISSAN-MITSUBISHI ALLIANCE
Win-Win for both, Nissan wins twice, says Ghosn Nissan Motor’s move to acquire a 34 pc equity stake in Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will lead to a lot of advantages for Nissan as well MMC, besides reducing costs of development and introducing many more vehicles on a common platform. This was stated by Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO of Japanbased Nissan Motors. Ghosn is also the Chairman and CEO of France-based Renault, Chairman of Russia-based automobile manufacturer AvtoVAZ and Chairman and CEO of the RenaultNissan Alliance. Ghosn was addressing a media roundtable that consisted of journalists belonging to Australia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam immediately after his company announced that it had signed a Basic Agreement with MMC to form a far-reaching strategic alliance between the two Japanese automakers. Following an MMC share issue, Nissan will take a 34pc equity stake in MMC for 237 billion yen (US $ 2.2 billion--Rs 14,459 crore approximately). The transaction is subject to the signing of a definitive Alliance Agreement, expected by the end of May, 2016, the signing of a shareholders agreement with the current Mitsubishi Group shareholders of MMC and regulatory approvals. It is expected to close by the end of the year. In India, though Nissan and Renault function as two different companies, they have a common plant in Chennai in the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu, under the Renault Nissan Alliance. Mitsubishi Motors, on the other hand does not have its own plant in India as it assembles its vehicles in the Hindustan Motors plant in Thiruvallur in Tamil Nadu. “It is win-win for both companies. However Nissan wins twice – both through synergies
www.motownindia.com
File Photo: Carlos Ghosn as well as through its 34% shareholding in MMC, giving us 34% of their wins too,” Ghosn told journalists. . Ghosn further added that his company would maintain the Mitsubishi brand, post the equity purchase, and will share technology, exchange best practices, etc. “You will be able to see in months and years to come that MMC will get out of its current struggles as a much stronger company, through the strong support of our expanded alliance,” he said. Through the strengthened relationship, MMC will be able to grow faster, he maintained. “Just looking at a simple equation, by taking a share in a company that is profitable and will grow more, it will benefit both companies. MMC is much smaller than Nissan, producing 1 million vehicles per year, whereas Nissan produces 4.0 million. “If we are sharing some platforms, for example, with similar products, we may stop a
platform at MMC, then the benefits will be much bigger for MMC. They no longer have the cost of the platform, they can share the Nissan platform to develop their branded products, paying Nissan a small fee to use that platform, as well as reducing platform development costs. Nissan can share the platform costs with MMC, thereby reducing purchase costs. We can share the cost of the development of technology, will have lower platform costs, etc. Some platforms will be Nissan, some will be MMC. “We will share best practice in regard to regional operations strengths. MMC is much stronger in South East Asia, which gives Nissan an opportunity to learn from them. In other markets, MMC will learn from Nissan,” he said. As far as electric vehicles are concerned, he said both Nissan as well as MMC have platforms for electric cars and “we can work together on one platform. However the vehicles we produce will look different as both companies
have different specs, but the core technological aspects are the same”. But marketing and sales for each of the Alliance companies will be separate and different. “Some dealers might have two brands in one showroom. But marketing and sales will be totally separate and distinct, in line with the brand identities of both companies,” he noted. On being asked as to what Mitsubishi can bring to the Alliance that Nissan/Renault does not have, he said, “There is some technology that MMC has that Nissan doesn’t have – e.g. plug-in hybrid technology. This is good for Nissan. We can immediately leverage their platform, reducing our technology development costs, and MMC can increase scale which will decrease their development costs. There is some specific technology that will help both companies. This is all about sharing and benefiting from larger scale. At the moment MMC needs support and we can bring this through our strengthened alliance.”
JUNE 2016 | MOTOWN INDIA | 63
NEWS As far as synergies from sharing platforms are concerned, Ghosn noted, “A new platform costs in the region of $500 million dollars. One platform usually lasts 15 years. We have nine common platforms between MMC and Nissan. Investment in a platform, as I mentioned is $500 million. Instead of building our own platforms, we can use our partner’s platforms. Whilst this is a big saving for you, you have to pay partner for use of their platform – but this much less than
building one from scratch. So it’s a win-win. Customers don’t care about the platform. They do care about design, and the tuning of the car amongst other things. We have been sharing modules with Renault – but the vehicles we produce are very different. There is no cannibalization.” When Ghosn was told that MMC was recently involved in a scam wherein the company had admitted to committing some emissions fraud, he said, “Yes, they currently have some
problems, and management is very conscious of this. They are sincerely concerned. They will do what needs to be done to rebuild trust. We will support with our own knowledge and experience. You need to be patient.” But he categorically denied that this scam will tarnish the reputation of Nissan and Renault. “The reputation of Renault has been consistent for the last 17 years and has no impact on Nissan. And viceversa,” he added. He concluded by saying that
the 2016 forecast for all the companies in the Renault-Nissan Alliance is that they are looking at production of 10 million cars 2016. “This puts us in top three globally. However volume not the objective of this alliance– it is a consequence of a job well done. The alliance will maximize volume, although it is not the objective. Economies of scale, increased competitiveness, and other initiatives will both reinforce and lead to volume increases,” he stated.
IMPROPER FUEL TESTS
Suzuki Motors apologises but denies cheating; Heads roll in Mitsubishi Japanese automaker Suzuki Motor Corp. apologised on May 18, 2016 for improper road tests that the company had conducted, but denied reports of any cheating on mileage numbers. The Suzuki fuel mileage scandal comes on the heels of another scandal involving Mitsubishi reported late April 2016. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation announced that two of its senior officials Tetsuro Aikawa President and COO, Representative Director and Ryugo Nakao Executive Vice President, Representative Director will be resigning on June 24, 2016. “As our announcement today on the Report to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism concerning improper conduct in fuel consumption testing of vehicles manufactured by MMC shows, MMC has caused tremendous trouble and concern to our customers and all of our stakeholders. Considering this, Mr. Aikawa and Mr. Nakao decided today that they will resign as Representative Directors as of June 24, 2016,” the MMC press statement stated. “We will decide on the successors of both
Representative Directors at our board of directors’ meeting and make an announcement promptly,” the statement read.
SUZUKI REPORT TO MLIT ON INVESTIGATION Further to the instruction from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) regarding investigation of the actual emissions and fuel efficiency tests, Suzuki reported the result of investigation to the ministry on May 18, 2016. “As the outcome of our internal investigation, acts of injustice, such as manipulation of fuel efficiency data were not found. Meanwhile, some discrepancies were found in the automobile emission and fuel efficiency testing process between the regulation by MLIT and the actual method carried out by Suzuki,” said a Suzuki press statement. SMC expressed its deep apologies to all its customers and stakeholders on this issue. SMC mentioned that the measuring method adopted by the company was different from regulations specified by the government. The company had reviewed the measuring process of driving
64 | MOTOWN INDIA | JUNE 2016
File Photo: Osamu Suzuki resistance of all 16 models currently available for sale. It was found that instead of actually measured data of the car, the submitted driving resistance data at the time of application for certificate was a build-up of actually measured data of individual components such as tyres, brakes and transmission from rolling resistance tests and air resistance tests in the wind tunnel and upon verification of adequateness compared with actually measured data of the car through coasting test. SMC explained the cause of this issue. It said it considered that the background lay in the fact that
Sagara proving ground owned by the company was located on top on a hill close to sea, where it is significantly affected by weather conditions such as influence of wind and carrying out tests were difficult. The recent improvements in fuel efficiency technology accompanied by reduced rolling resistance and vehicle weight have greater tendency for cars to be influenced by wind as well as results spread in wider variations. In case of adopting tyres with less rolling resistance, for an example, it is difficult to perceive the effect without variation in data, and have to increase the number of tests, the company explained.

Kerala ban on diesel cars sends auto industry into tizzy The latest ruling of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banning diesel vehicles with engine capacities of 2000cc and above has sent the entire Indian auto industry in a state of shock and disbelief. The NGT bench headed by Justice Swatanter Kumar issued the interim order after hearing a petition filed by the Lawyers Environmental Awareness Forum (LEAF) based in Kerala. The NGT special circuit bench at Kochi not only banned the use of diesel vehicles older than 10 years, as in Delhi but also directed the state not to register any diesel vehicle which has an engine capacity of 2,000 cc. As for the ban on diesel vehicles more than 10 years old, the
www.motownindia.com
tribunal stated if these continue to run after 30 days (the time given for owners to stop its road use), a fine of Rs 10,000 would be imposed on the vehicle owner. This NGT order has sent deep shock waves among several auto makers, especially those manufacturing cars with diesel engines of 2000cc and above. Not only is it a shocking turn of events for these vehicle manufacturers, especially after the Supreme Court ordered a similar ban in the Delhi NCR, but also questions the veracity of India’s macroeconomic policies that have in the past enabled the growth of the Indian auto industry. It was based on these policies that several foreign auto makers had decided
to invest in India to manufacture vehicles. The future of several hundreds of auto ancillary players in the country also depends on the healthy growth of these OEMs. Ban on diesel cars with engine capacities of 2000cc and above has and will further affect companies like Audi India, BMW India, Chevrolet, Force Motors, Ford India, Isuzu Motors India, Jaguar Land Rover, Mahindra & Mahindra, Maserati, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Skoda, Tata Motors, Toyota Kirloskar Motor India and Volkswagen in one way or the other. The NGT had first caused a stir in the auto industry when on December 11, 2015, it banned registration of new diesel vehicles
till January 6, 2016 in Delhi amid rising concerns over pollution in the city. It also told the government not to renew the registration of diesel vehicles more than 10 years old. The NGT decision had come a day after Supreme Court said it would examine if diesel vehicles could be banned in the capital. Much to the chagrin of the Indian auto industry, the highest court in the country, the Supreme Court of India, a few days after the NGT order, banned new diesel luxury cars and SUVs with engine capacities of 2000cc and above from being registered in Delhi National Capital Region (NCR). This ban continues despite several attempts by auto makers asking SC to revoke the ban.

TECHNOLOGY
Bosch and Pagani test driving safety systems of Huayra BC in Arctic Circle Jorge Jauregui opens a garage door at Bosch’s winter test centre in Arjeplog, located in the north of Sweden. His warm breath condenses into wisps of fog. The thermometer reads minus 20°C. He is a development engineer and has taken out vehicles a countless number of times on the icy and snowy roadways here, analyzing measurement data and optimising system calibrations. But today is special: the hypercar behind the garage door will be driven on a test track just a few kilometres south of the Arctic Circle for the first time. The Pagani Huayra BC boasts 12 cylinders and more than 750 hp. Bosch makes its ABS antilock braking system, the traction control system, and the ESP electronic stability programme. Viewed from the outside, these electronic guardian angels watching over this lightweight wonder are no different than the components found in millions of other vehicles on the road all over the world. But the software in this application was tailored for Pagani’s small production run, using a unique configuration of the software in each of the only 20 vehicles produced and five prototypes. The behaviour of the systems can be adjusted for one of five stages, ranging from
comfort to maximum dynamic handling. This type of precision engineering work is the task of Jauregui and his colleagues, who will be stationed at the test centre in Sweden with one of the prototypes for two weeks. Although they have already subjected a number of vehicles to extreme testing under winter weather conditions as a part of these “winter tests”, this time things are different. As Jauregui says, with a gleam in his eye, “Getting more than 750 hp under control on the snow is a special challenge, even for me. It’s not something I do every day.” Pagani and Bosch Pagani relies on Bosch for the driving safety and braking control systems used on its Huayra and Huayra BC vehicles. “The philosophy of our vehicles is a combination between art and science, technology and design, performance and uncompromising safety. Bosch Engineering has been our partner for a number of years now in this endeavor,” says Horacio Pagani, founder of Italian hypercar manufacturer Pagani Automobili. Although the ABS and ESP hardware come from Bosch’s mass-production automotive portfolio, it is Bosch Engineering GmbH, a subsidiary
66 | MOTOWN INDIA | JUNE 2016
of the supplier of technology and services, that is responsible for the custom adaptation of the software. Bosch Engineering employs more than 2,000 engineers whose expertise extends to every aspect of their field – except off-the-shelf solutions. As they have already done with the Huayra and the Zonda, the company is using the Pagani Huayra BC to showcase its ability to tailor and configure both software and electronics to meet vehicle-specific requirements. Because in order to perform ideally in all situations,
the ABS and ESP systems require extremely precise software calibration to accommodate both the performance characteristics of a hypercar as well as the particularities of summer and winter road conditions. “This is the only way in which we can exploit the entire safety potential of the software while creating the dynamic handling particular to this brand. We understand Pagani’s requirements in this regard, and are developing a tailor-made software accordingly,” says Bernhard Bihr, president of Bosch Engineering Group.

TECHNOLOGY
Continental integrates gesture-based control into steering wheel Technology is simply getting better and it’s far more convenient now to drive cars and enjoy some of the benefits that come along with it. A quick swipe with the thumb, a light wave with the hand, and the driver can accept an incoming call, activate the required driving mode or start their favourite song. Gesturebased control is already known from the world of entertainment electronics and has been making inroads into vehicles for some time now. Further development of this new control system in the car is being driven by Continental. The international technology company has unveiled an innovation project that, for the first time ever, focuses the detection zone of gestures on the steering wheel. This is possible due to a time-of-flight sensor, which is integrated into the instrument cluster. Using this approach, the solution minimises driver distraction and further enhances the development of the holistic human-machine interface. Where previous gesture-based control systems in the area of the centre console meant that drivers had to take their hands off the steering wheel or take their eyes off the road, the field of action in the solution developed by Continental is much more focused. “With gestures in a clearly defined area on the steering wheel, we can minimize distraction and increase safety. This narrowing down also prevents the driver from unintentionally starting gesturebased control by means of their usual everyday gestures, and thus making unwanted selections,” says Ralf Lenninger, head of Strategy, System Development, and Innovation in Continental’s Interior division.
Reduced complexity for diverse applications and optimised system costs The new operating concept
www.motownindia.com
integrates seamlessly into the holistic human-machine interface and can replace other elements such as buttons or even touch-sensitive surfaces on the steering wheel. Instead, it uses two transparent plastic panels – without any electronic components – behind the steering wheel, which a driver can operate with his thumbs, almost like a touchpad. As a result, a driver will benefit from intuitive operation, while vehicle manufacturers benefit from optimised system costs for innovative operating concepts. The clear design of the panels is compatible with almost any control geometry and new gestures can be added at any time. In addition, the variable complexity ensures that the system can be integrated in many different vehicle classes and not just in the luxury segments.
Intuitive operation reduces driver distraction and increases safety The time-of-flight sensor detects the motion of the hand and
converts it into actions. The driver can navigate through the menus by swiping up and down, and confirm the selection with a brief tapping motion. Touchfree operation is also possible for other functions. For example, if the driver moves his fingers up and down in a uniform movement while keeping his hands on the steering wheel, he can accept calls or reject them. “These gestures are intuitive for the driver and are very closely based on the familiar operating methods of smartphones and other smart devices due to the transparent gesture panels. This simplifies the dialog between driver and vehicle, even for more complex applications, and driver distraction is minimized as well,” adds Lenninger. A gesture is typically a movement linked to a specific property. Thanks to the time-of-flight sensor integrated in the instrument cluster, this development from Continental has a high rate of gesture recognition. The sensor comprises a 3D camera system with an integrated
3D image sensor and converts the infrared signal detected by the sensor into a 3D image. Consequently, the hand positions and gestures of the driver are detected with millimeter precision and converted to actions. The system can currently detect four different gestures: setting the navigation, browsing through apps and starting music, answering calls, and controlling the on-board computer. Initial reactions of test users confirm the selection of these gestures. In particular, they welcomed the proximity to the steering wheel, operation with the thumb, as well as the intuitive learnability of the gestures. “The development of a holistic humanmachine interface is crucial for further strengthening the driver’s confidence in their vehicle. Building up this confidence, combined with an intuitive dialog between driver and vehicle is yet another important step on the road to automated driving, one that we are supporting with gesture-based control on the steering wheel,” Ralf Lenninger summarises.

INTERVIEW
INTERVIEW WITH
DEEPAK GARG
Founder & CEO, Rivigo Pvt. Ltd. Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER & Photography: AFSAR BAIG What drove you into starting a company in logistics? I am a mechanical engineer from IIT Kanpur and an MBA from IIM Lucknow. I spent about 9 years with McKinsey; I spent a lot of time on consulting projects. For the last few years I have been really passionate about solving real problems with a large impact and logistics is one sector which is really large and which has a lot of deep problems to be solved. This is one sector where the impact is at all levels, be it people in the sector or customers as well. It has a direct impact and linkage to the GDP and the economy. So it looked like one of the sectors which involves very deep problem solving and has the ability of creating impact at scale. That is what excited me about logistics more than anything else. When you approached your investors regarding your idea and your business model, how did they react to it, were they cool with the idea and did they think you could pull it off? In the year 2014 there was a lot of sentiment around mobile apps and asset light models, this is one model which is more real in the sense that we have assets and there is technology as well. So it is not completely asset light and is technology driven. In the initial few months the reaction was like ‘oh show me the app’ or ‘oh you are an asset heavy company’. So it was not an investor led business but once traction came through and people saw that the idea was real and is solving a real problem be it a driver problem or a client service problem, investors were quite smart to figure which bet to
take. This was only for the first few months and after that there has been a lot of heavy industry interest in terms of the idea, the business and the team itself. This is a testimony to the fact that entrepreneurship focuses on solving the real problem and once you are doing that the investor and the capital will come itself. Briefly describe your present business model and where it has arrived at present. We started in 2014 with a simple idea and thesis of solving the truck driver problem by doing driver relays. It has come out quite well since then as it has scaled to a pan India operations and a large set of trucks run every day on a driver relay model. It has changed the industry paradigm on service levels, turnaround time and predictability. This service was

not at all available earlier. From here on our journey is to make it even more relevant and have more and more clients shift to this kind of a service. Customers can design their supply chains based on reliability, service levels and predictability which they get from this service. I think that is what the next journey is going to be. Even when we started this idea, this is the first time any one is doing such a thing globally and therefore it was never proven, we did not know whether it will work or whether we will get client or customer interest. We did not know how the overall ecosystem was but sitting here after 18 months I feel that we have come a long way in terms of establishing the design work which benefits everyone be it the ecosystem providers, the drivers or the customers. Therefore it is now bound to grow and become
the mainstream way of running logistics. What kind of trucks are you running right now and also how are you managing the trucker’s pool which you have right now? The model itself is driver centric. The driver relay happens and the drivers come back on the same day. It solves the whole problem of driver lifestyle, harassment and that is the core area of this model. Therefore it directly impacts the reasons why there is a lack of drivers. We have stops where the drivers are available and we source drivers from the local areas, then they are engaged through a central and pit stop team. We have two models of trucks -- one is a large 25 tonner and the other is an Ashok Leyland Boss.

INTERVIEW Are you running a telematics solution to evaluate drivers? Our entire operations are fully enabled by technology and that is the cornerstone of our business. A lot of technology goes into the trucks and the drivers. There is a central technology which tracks the trucks and the shipments as well. All of this helps making the operations more efficient, be it theft control, pilferage control, asset control, reliability management and safety. We have infused technology to the extent that the entire operation gets seamlessly managed through automation rather than paper work and people. Are you running some kind of a driver training programme as well? All our drivers get trained before they take the wheel, they get trained from different driver training institutes. We have tied up with different market enablers and there are five locations where we run this training. It is a three-day residential training program and a lot of training in these sessions is on mindset, behavior, cultural and discipline issues than on truck driving per say. Other focus areas are on safety and how to improve mileage. What were the initial
challenges that you faced and how did you overcome those challenges? The challenges were quite a lot, it started from the fact that no one wanted to do trucking or logistics and the high quality talent typically wanted to join more consumer businesses than B2B trucking businesses. So getting exceptional people excited about this space was one of the biggest challenges early on and building a high quality team was also a challenge. We were new to the sector and none of us has a logistics or trucking background, so learning from day one and applying fresh perspective to what happened in the sector was again a journey in itself. Whether it was sourcing drivers or how do you identify if the driver will work in a disciplined and responsible way. There are horror stories which we used to hear early on like pilferage, theft and irresponsible behavior. So how do we counter that and that has been a learning itself, now we have seamlessly been able to hire 200 drivers across the country. We hire them, engage them and train them. It has been a journey in itself to learn the entire driver engagement case. There have been operational issues as well like managing the pilferage of fuel. So how do you ensure, in the relay that if the accountability is not there with
one particular driver pilferage does not take place. Over a period of time we have solved these with technology and processes. We use sensors and get data from that which we can track. We have also implemented design changes as well to the vehicle which ensure that there is no leakage of fuel and if there is then we can spot it. But any change which you bring cannot be technology alone, you have to inspire people and set processes to identify the leakage, you have to then enable it using technology and tell a story on why it matters. I think it takes time and a lot of effort at a ground level to get such a thing executed. It does not happen overnight as it is a continuous challenge. We still want to improve our fuel mileage and driver engagement, we still want to enhance turnaround time and minimise unscheduled stops. We have come a long way but a lot more needs to be done in these dimensions. How many rounds of funding have taken place till now? Three rounds of funding have taken place so far. The first was an Angel round, then a Series A round with SAIF and a Series B round with SAIF as well. The last funding happened in December so we are not looking for funding right now but at an opportune time when we scale up business
further we will go to the market again to raise capital. The project and the idea itself were very audacious. It will require the entire ecosystem to come together in the right way and I see Rivigo as a champion of this idea but it benefits the entire ecosystem, it benefits the truck OEMs and the drivers. It creates driver pool and safer road operations, it benefits customers as well. Since we are spearheading this we need to contribute more by putting in more capital, talent and resources to ensure it becomes mainstream. Are you planning to procure more vehicles, expand and diversify in the coming few years? We are continuously buying vehicles and over the last year we have bought a certain number of vehicles and we will continue to buy more as the business grows. We are also enabling our partners to buy vehicles and they include mostly for regional hauls, first mile and last mile operations. So we are already scaling up our cold chain and part load business, both of which have been started only in the last six months and there is a lot of agenda to be executed. We are not looking at any more diversification right now but we are just streamlining what we have currently and scaling up what we launched over the last six months.
