aunches and unveilings of new vehicles continue in India despite all kinds of bans, whether it is a diesel ban by the Supreme Court or a juvenile odd-even plan from the Delhi government. Among the vehicles that were launched and unveiled in April 2016, two simply stole our hearts. One

was the Isuzu D-Max V-Cross Adventure Utility Vehicle and the other was the Honda Navi. The former is a butch faced vehicle with some traditional leaf spring suspension and plenty of boot space for storage. It’s not a runof-the-mill compact SUV but an entirely different product that promises to stir the minds and hearts of men who yearn for some adventure in their lives. The latter, the Honda Navi, is a motorcycle that could appeal to the youth who wants to have a “Bindaas” time. It’s an extremely agile vehicle with all the elements of a small, smart, sprinter. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly as we tested both the products. The V-Cross will be formally launched in the country early second half of this calendar year. Motown India team was the first in the country to review this vehicle and the same can be viewed on YouTube. Now it is the turn of Motown India magazine subscribers to enjoy reading about the vehicle. While the magazine has its share of consumer oriented news, it has, in its B2B section, an extensive report on the Indian commercial vehicles industry. Please do note that Motown India magazine is also available on the company’s website www.motownindia.com in an e-magazine form where one can get to read the entire e-magazine free of cost anywhere in the world. So much for our reach and mammoth readership!

REALLY PRACTICAL! FIRST DRIVE

HONDA BR-V

Report & Photography: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER

O

ne of the most overused terms in the automotive world is SUV. The market for compact SUVs in India has been picking up momentum ever since the country saw the launch and success of the Renault Duster. While some big names like Volkswagen and Toyota have not yet entered the fray, Honda has finally decided it was time to assert their presence in this segment. The Honda BR-V has been spied and tested on foreign shores but we got our hands on it here in India for the first time right before its launch on May 05, 2016. To look at, the BR-V combines aspects of the CR-V and the Mobilio, with bold design lines and aggressive looking exteriors. It definitely has the contemporary styling of an urban compact SUV but is its performance up to the mark?. The Honda BR-V is powered by Honda’s proven i-VTEC and i-DTEC technology. Both petrol and diesel engines have a cubic capacity of 1.5 litres. The petrol motor, however, produces 117.4bhp at 6600rpm and the diesel produces 98.6bhp at 3600rpm. The petrol motor is fast and the power delivery is quite linear. The diesel, however, takes a bit of

time to get going but once it does the surge of power is enough to satisfy your soul. The turbo on the i-DTEC diesel kicks in anywhere north of 1800rpm and has been tuned with precision. The punch provided by the turbo is quite subtle and it does not hit you in the pit of your stomach like most of the other diesel mills. While many motoring journos may complain that there is a definite power lag and the engine is not punchy enough, I am rather satisfied with the engineering on the BR-V simply because Indian roads are not meant for speeds above 150kmph and going further than that would be quite risky. This vehicle can get you up to the 150kmph mark with ease and the acceleration on the way is quite smooth. The diesel i-DTEC engine generates more torque at a lower rpm and hence is my weapon of choice. Being an SUV the vehicle needs to be capable of that tag, not just because it can seat 7 people. The BRV also comes with a ground clearance of 210mm which is quite good when compared to industry standards. The ground clearance on the BR-V rivals that of the Duster and is second to none in the segment. The diesel mill produces 200Nm of torque at 1750rpm while the petrol motor produces 145Nm at 4600rpm. We took the

BR-V off-road as well to test out its capability and were quite amazed at the versatility of this vehicle. It is not an extreme off roader but definitely has the power and punch to take on some rough terrain. We put the vehicle through some steep inclines, angle tests and took it through loose gravel and sand. All the way through the BR-V smiled and happily drudged along. Both the diesel and petrol motors have a manual 6-speed transmission while the petrol version also gets a CVT automatic version. The vehicle has reasonably long legs on highways and the option of 6 gears with short throws gives one their fair share of fun. My personal favorite was the CVT which comes with paddle shifts. The power delivery is progressive and if you throw the lever into sports mode (S) the 1.5L petrol motor comes to life with all the flair it can muster. The paddle shifts make it easier to shift gears instantly and the racer inside you begins to emerge. But when you do have a lot of fun at this point, don’t complain of the fuel average. The suspension on the BR-V is facilitated by a McPherson Strut with coil spring in the front and a Torsion Beam with coil spring in the rear. The suspension has been tuned to be stiffer than what we see on traditional Honda vehicles. Riding over bumps and potholes is a breeze and the BR-V takes care of bad roads with ease. Even while off-roading one does not get tossed about too much in this vehicle and can sit comfortably in the cabin. The steering on the BR-V is well weighted and one does not need to put in too much effort behind the wheel. The petrol version of the BR-V has a shorter turning radius set at 5.3m and is more maneuverable than the diesel version which has a turning radius of 5.5m. The brakes on this compact SUV are facilitated by discs in the front and drums in the rear. The braking is progressive and

www.motownindia.com

WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience

quite efficient. We tested the BR-V on various terrains and performed a few panic braking tests as well. At the end we were quite satisfied by the vehicles performance on dirt, gravel and tarmac. The fuel efficiency mark on the diesel stands at 21.9kmpl while the petrol manual version delivers 15.4kmpl and the CVT automatic returns 16kms to the litre. Being a compact SUV one can expect the vehicle to seat 5 people. However the BR-V is a 7 seater. It has been based on the Brio platform and has a lot of characteristics of the Mobilio. The cabin is quite large and roomy and 7 people can actually fit in with ease. The rear has a trunk volume of 223 litres with a 50:50 split for the 3rd row and a 60:40 split for the 2nd row. The 2nd row also comes with a sliding and folding option making the BR-V one of the most practical and well thought out compact SUVs. The BR-V features interiors

www.motownindia.com

which are quite contemporary and resemble the Honda Jazz. However we were not too happy with the quality of plastics used on the dash and the piano black finish which has been used around the audio unit looks good but does is prone to dust and fingerprints. The BR-V features an infotainment system which is USB, Bluetooth and AUX enabled with steering mounted controls, push button start/ stop, keyless entry, automatic airconditioning, power adjustable and foldable ORVMs. The BR-V has a multi-info display to show average and instant fuel economy, trip meter, ambient temperature, time, fuel level, etc. The BR-V also comes with safety features such as ABS and dual front airbags. What remains to be seen is the pricing of the vehicle which will be launched on May 05 this year, we estimate the starting price to be around the Rs. 7.6 lakh mark. MI

T

he Indian automobile industry is becoming more and more like Bollywood movies. Sequels with pathetic story lines and miserable acting are being churned out ad nauseam. Isn’t the Indian auto industry a bit similar in its tack? The moment compact SUVs started becoming popular, there has been a massive rush by vehicle manufacturers to make these kinds of vehicles. Every vehicle seems to be sprouting muscles to get into this category of compact SUVs. But when a vehicle manufacturer dares to be different from the rest, you have got to take notice of it and show it respect. The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross Adventure Utility Vehicle, the first of its kind in the country, promises to be different. We got an opportunity to drive the V-Cross on a makeshift track in Isuzu Motors’ new plant

at SriCity in Andhra Pradesh on an extremely hot summer day. With temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius, and not a single patch of shade to cover our path anywhere, we set about driving the massive pick up vehicle. The V-Cross is definitely a smart pick-up vehicle meant for the passenger segment. At least it’s the kind of vehicle you tend to respect for its brute strength and sundry practical features. Isuzu Motors has been in India for a year or so and has been making and selling its commercial vehicles under the brand name D-Max. The vehicles were being assembled at the Hindustan Motors’ plant in Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu. Now all that has stopped and the operations have been shifted out to the new plant, inaugurated recently by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu. In the past, there have been pick-ups from Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra for the

passenger vehicle segment, but none has been as purposeful as the new V-Cross. Since we had limited time with the vehicle, this article is more about a first impression of the V-Cross. The V-Cross comes out as a very practical and driver friendly vehicle. Built on a ladder chassis, with double wishbone independent front wheel suspension and long span rear leaf suspension, the V-Cross has all the comforts of a passenger vehicle and the dynamism of a rugged 4X4. To begin with, it’s been styled perfectly and has an extremely bold front and a stylish cargo friendly rear that has all the design elements of a true off-roader. On the first look itself, you tend to admire it for its rugged and muscular stance. The vehicle may be huge in size with a wide track and long wheelbase, but it’s got a low centre of gravity ensuring minimal body roll. Adding to its good looks are the skid plates with engine bottom guard and the vehicle sits on smart 16 inches alloy wheels. The vehicle is aerodynamically shaped for low

16 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2016

drag coefficient. The roof rails enhance the vehicle’s sporty looks. It also comes with large electrically foldable and adjustable ORVMs with turn signal indicators. Once you are seated inside the twin cabin you realise that it’s not only spacious but it’s also noise insulated. This twin cabin can seat at least four to five adults with great comfort. It has a wrap around 6-way adjustable driver seat. The vehicle comes with automatic AC with fine particle pollen filter, a 7” touch screen audio system with USB input, DVD, Aux, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity. There is a host of storage compartments and cup holders, flexible rear seats-foldable with 60:40 split, tilt adjustable steering wheel with controls for audio, while the electro-luminescent meters come with multi information display. The dashboard looks pretty spiffy and the central console can put to shame some of the up market compact SUVs currently available in the market.

Practically speaking, this vehicle is ideal for intercity travel. Whether you have to cover long distances, or cross hills and mountains, tread over uneven terrain and rain washed land, travel with loads of luggage or simply go on an adventure, this vehicle offers everything you ever wished for. In fact, this vehicle instills confidence in you too as you drive along. While driving around the track in the SiriCity facility of Isuzu Motors, I noticed the ease at which one could deploy the 4X4 feature by simply turning the Dual type 4WD knob. Yes, it has a shift on fly 4X4 feature that enables you to move to either 4H or 4L, depending on the terrain and get back to 2WD when required so. As we tossed the mammoth vehicle on the narrow track, we noticed that the body roll was very minimal and the soft suspension gave the comfort of a passenger car. The moment you step on the accelerator, the engine lunges forward and the turbo kicks in much before the 2000rpm level. The hydraulic power assist

steering is easy to handle and ensures that you are able to take control of the beast. The Isuzu D-Max V-Cross in my opinion is absolute value for money if it is priced around the Rs 15 lakh tag. But for such pick-up based passenger vehicle to succeed in India, one needs to change one’s age old archaic mindset and opt for this vehicle which promises not only driving comfort but instills a massive dose of confidence in you. No vehicle in India today in the passenger vehicle segment is as versatile as the V-Cross. Whether it is going to the hills, cruising on a highway to nowhere or simply picking up relatives at the airport or railway station or transporting some

www.motownindia.com

of your own household stuff from one place to another, the V-Cross can serve like no other vehicle can. It can serve you well. When Isuzu Motors finally launches the V-Cross in India in the beginning of second half of the year, it may have find resistance from people whose choice has been fed with the staple diet of compact SUVs and small hatchbacks. In case, the company is able to change this mindset, then it has a true winner in the D-Max V-Cross Adventure Utility Vehicle. In the meantime, when the V-Cross is officially launched, Motown India will do an extensive review of the product and tell its readers about the true capabilities of the vehicle. Stay tuned till then! MI

uying an automobile today in the country is not as easy as it was in the past when you just had a couple of models to choose from. Now car buyers in India are spoilt for choice, especially when it comes to the affordable SUV segment in the market. This SUV space is evolving big time in terms of design as well as pricing. For the Mahindras, who have been ruling the roost in this SUV segment, it’s been one long and interesting journey. Their portfolio today consists of the Scorpio, the Bolero, the XUV 500, the KUV 100, the TUV 300 and the recently launched NuvoSport, among others. The NuvoSport is essentially a modified Quanto, a vehicle that was launched in the second half of 2012. At that time everybody felt that the Quanto was launched in a hurry and was not really a well thought out model. The vehicle from all angles shared an uncanny resemblance with the Xylo. Now what the Mahindras have done is that they have aggressively restyled the front end of the Quanto, made it sit on a new generation platform, tweaked the interiors a bit and patted down a bit of the rear and have called it the NuvoSport. It’s a compact SUV

18 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2016

that still brings back memories of the Quanto but definitely has radical design elements and features to take on the modern world. The vehicle now features a brand new front with re-designed headlamps, front grill, air-ducts and a bonnet scoop. At the rear, the NuvoSport sports new smoked tail lamps, re-designed spare wheel cover and an integrated

www.motownindia.com

spoiler. The NuvoSport is built on a brand new chassis which is a body on frame (basically a new generation chassis for better stability). Moving to the inside of the vehicle the NuvoSport

essentially remains the same as the Quanto with the addition of a new steering wheel with controls and a new aftermarket infotainment system from Kenwood.

The biggest advantage the NuvoSport provides over any of its competitors is space. The fit and finish of the cabin however is an area which could have been improved. This compact SUV

MAY 2016 | MOTOWN INDIA | 19

can seat up to 7 people which is definitely an advantage to have over competitors which can seat only 4-5 adults. But the third row of the NuvoSport is no place for an adult. It is best suited for children or luggage. Even though NuvoSport has a large cabin, it does not have the provision for rear ac vents. When you are seating passengers in all three rows it may get a little too hot on a summer day but a provision for butterfly windows has been provided for the third row occupants which definitely comes as a relief. The NuvoSport is powered by a mHawk 100 diesel mill which produces 100bhp at 3750rpm and 240Nm of torque from 16002800rpm. The NuvoSport offers two driving modes Power and Eco. At the push of a button one can choose between fuel efficient driving or a peppy response from the motor. I personally fell in love with this feature while testing out

20 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2016

the NuvoSport. In power mode the vehicle zipped through traffic, the power delivery was smooth and the vehicle despite its size and weight picked up speed easily. The two-stage turbo also kicks in early and ensures a minimalistic lag. While I was stuck in heavy traffic I just shifted to Eco mode and the NuvoSport rolled along with ease. The fuel efficiency delivered in Eco mode

is 17.4kmpl which is quite good when compared to the size of this vehicle. In the Eco mode the power delivery is a bit slow as the engine gets re-mapped to provide a better driving average but if its saving cost which concerns you then the slight drop in power is not something to worry about. The NuvoSport N8 variant which we drove also comes with cruise control which

is a handy feature to have if you travel a lot on highways. The engine comes mated to a manual 5-speed transmission which did the job quite well. This compact SUV is also available with an AMT transmission for the N6 and N8 variants as well. The NuvoSport like all Mahindra UVs has a well tuned suspension set up. The car features an independent double

www.motownindia.com

WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience

wishbone in the front and a fivelink coil spring type in the rear. The suspension is on the stiffer side but makes for a solid ride. We tested the vehicle over some really broken patches of road and the NuvoSport took care of the potholes and bumps with ease. One does get tossed around a fair bit in this vehicle but then again its better than bouncing around like a yoyo. There is also a bit of body roll on the vehicle but nothing

www.motownindia.com

too troublesome. The steering is slightly heavy so one does need to put in a bit of effort to maneuver this vehicle. The NuvoSport also provides the driver a high point of visibility and a good commanding position of the road. On the safety front the new NuvoSport comes with airbags for the driver and co-driver, ABS with EBD, a collapsible steering column, side intrusion beams, digital immobiliser, auto door

lock and anti-theft warning. While driving the NuvoSport I could not help but notice that while most compact SUVs out there are and feel a lot like overgrown hatch backs this one had the DNA of a blue blooded SUV. Despite some of its shortcomings, I feel the NuvoSport is one of the more likeable compact SUVs out there. The front is very edgy and aggressive looking but the rear could have been designed to look

smarter. The top end N8 variant also comes with Mahindra’s Micro Hybrid Start/Stop technology which again is a very useful feature to have. The NuvoSport N8 variant which we drove is available for Rs. 9.2 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) the SUV offers loads of practicality and has some handy features as well. If space and safety are what you are looking for in the compact SUV segment then this is one of your safest bets. MI

BMW 320D M SPORT

A SOLID, SPORTY DEAL I

Report: JOSHUA DAVID LUTHER / Photography: AFSAR BAIG n today’s age and date most of the vehicles on Indian roads look mean and aggressive but rarely back that look with power packed performance. But there are a few car makers out there who believe looks are only as good as the engineering and performance of a vehicle. BMW the German power house is one of them and they have been bringing smiles to people’s faces for ten decades now. We got our hands on the new BMW 3 Series 320d M Sport and by the end of the day a big grin adorned my face. The new 3 Series M Sport is powered by a BMW 1995cc, TwinPower, Turbo, 4-cylinder diesel engine which makes 190bhp at 4000rpm and 400Nm of torque from 1750-2750rpm. The engine being less than 2000cc makes it legal to be sold on the roads of New Delhi as well as the NCR. The Supreme Court of India set a ban on diesel vehicles above 2000cc from being sold in the Delhi NCR region which has crippled sales of many luxury and utility vehicle manufacturers who sell big numbers in the country’s capital. But that has not deterred companies like BMW from making performance vehicles which also meet the legal requirements of the land. The M Sport package on the new 3 Series adds a power packed punch to this vehicle and makes it a more desirable option amongst buyers looking for more than just the ordinary. BMW’s M division has been making performance cars since the summer of 1972 and now in the year 2016 they have brought the 3 Series M Sport to Indian shores. The 3 Series has been a big hit for BMW in India and with the option of the M Sport, Indian buyers get added performance and a feel of the M’s as well. The refreshed design on the 3 Series consists of aggressive looking LED headlamps which come as standard now, the car also gets new aprons with revised air intakes, standard LED tail lamps and the M Sport is also available with an

www.motownindia.com

exclusive Estoril Blue (Metallic) colour. The 3 series has been craftily combined using elegant design lines and aggressive styling. On the inside the cabin feels more like the cockpit of a space ship with contemporary design elements and efficient use of exquisite materials. The M Sport features a car key with the M trim, M logo on the front wings, an exclusive chrome trim in the centre console area and an M Sport leather steering wheel. The 3 Series M Sport can go from 0-100kmph in 7.2 seconds and can achieve a top speed of 230kmph. The German engineering is quite evident on this sedan with a smooth, comfortable and sporty ride. The 3 Series M Sport which we drove sits on 255/40 R18 tyres which provide a phenomenal grip on tarmac and the steering is light, responding immediately to driver inputs. The suspension setup is a double joint spring strut in the front and a five arm one in the rear. BMW has increased the suspension stiffness on the new 3 Series and this caters to a well balanced and comfortable ride. The car glides over potholes and bumps with ease rendering minimum discomfort to the occupants. One of the biggest advantages to have is choosing a driving mode to suit your situation and convenience. With the M Sport one can select between four driving modes -- Comfort, ECOPRO, Sport and Sport+. While Comfort and ECOPRO modes are for a more relaxed and laid back driving behavior of the car which caters to a better fuel efficiency, the Sport and Sport+ mode are for more responsive and aggressive driving behavior of the car. The Sport+ mode is where there is minimal intrusion from the various driver aids which have been installed in the car. This offers drivers more freedom to explore the capabilities of this sedan. The build quality of the car is superb as expected from BMW and it handles like a dream be it smooth tarmac or rough roads. The ground clearance of the 3 Series stands at 157mm which is decent by my standards. We took the sedan over some

broken roads and it did not bottom out even once however one does need to be careful of those nasty speed breakers. On the inside the 3 Series provides comfortable seating for four average build Indian adults, it would get a little cramped if five adults were to sit in this cabin. The seats provide adequate support and the cabin feels roomy. The driver and co-passenger get power adjusted seats as well. Another very handy feature I found on the 3 Series was the full colour HUD (Heads Up Display). The HUD allows drivers to maintain focus on the road without having to peep down at the speedo from time to time. It also has the provision for displaying maps and directions which makes the drivers job easier. The 3 Series also comes with a start/stop function and brake energy regeneration to improve the fuel efficiency of this car. On the safety front the 3 Series M Sport comes fully loaded with features like airbags for the driver and co-passenger, head airbags for the front and rear occupants, side airbags for the driver and co-passenger, ABS, corner braking control, dynamic stability control, dynamic traction control, crash sensors, vehicle immobiliser and run flat tyres which can be driven up to 80kmph for a limited distance. The 3 Series M Sport also comes with a sliding armrest as well as plenty of storage spaces and cubby holes. Occupants get a two zone climate control and rear ac vents as well. The 3 Series M Sport package comes with a 22.3cm iDrive colour touch infotainment system with handwriting recognition, DVD playback, integrated 3D maps, bluetooth audio streaming and USB integration. The BMW 3 Series M Sport is available for Rs. 44.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The vehicle has a lot to offer to buyers and is a very versatile and dynamic car with immense capability. At the price point BMW has offered the new 3 Series M Sport one can arguably say it is a solid deal. MI

ack in the day when the roads were more open and traffic was less, one could roam around more freely in the city of Delhi. But as the years progressed it has become a tedious task to step out of your home and battle through the crowded streets of this capital city. Many opt for more maneuverable options such as a scooty or a motorcycle to get about in the city. But when you pull up on a scooty to work or to college it does not leave too macho an image in peoples mind. In terms of practicality a scooty is a bit bulky but being an automatic it is quite convenient to ride while a motorcycle does pose the problem of storing goods when on the go and also one does need to work the gears now and again. To solve all these problems we simply need to combine the best of both worlds. The cross between a scooter and a bike has been implemented previously and it came in the form of the Rajdoot GTS aka “Bobby”. The bike gained immense popularity back in the seventies but now in 2016 we have a more contemporary monkey bike known widely by the name Honda Navi. The Navi was launched at the 2016 Auto Expo and has garnered massive attention ever since. It brings forth the versatility of a bike and the practicality of a scooty all on a single platform. While testing the Navi through the crowded streets of Delhi I was reminded of the good old days, when I used to ride my bike to college every day. It was not just a statement of style but also about convenience and practicality. Then I asked myself would I ride this to college? And the answer undoubtedly was “Hell yea”. This little fella has the swag one looks for in a bike and at the same time is practical to ride. But we were not done just yet. While many have been running the Navi on smooth roads and wide streets of metropolitans, we decided to take it a bit further through the narrow streets of Chandni Chowk in Old Delhi. This literally was no child’s playground, every turn we needed to be immensely careful or we could knock down a kid or some adult. The agility of the Navi took me by surprise as I made turns and swerves through the dilapidated streets of Chawri Baazar. The Navi feels nimble and fleet footed like a cheetah, the rider gets good balance and gaining confidence on this bike is quite easy. The Navi is powered by a 109.19cc, single cylinder, air cooled, 4-stroke engine. The power output is 7.8bhp at 7000 rpm and the engine produces a max torque of 8.96Nm at 5500 rpm. We took the Navi to a top speed of 90kmph and getting up to the 80kmph mark is breeze. Past the 80kmph mark the engine does feel a bit strained but since the vehicle ways around 101kgs it is quite fleet footed. The SPECIFICATIONS

Having fun with the Honda Navi at the Shifan Fitness Centre in Old Delhi; Saleem Khan (L) and Amjad Khan. suspension on the Navi is facilitated by a telescopic fork in the front and a spring loaded hydraulic type in the rear. We found the suspension to be a bit stiffly tuned and one does get shaken up a bit over bumpy roads. The ride quality of the Navi otherwise is quite good and the vehicle is well balanced. While leaning in at corners even at speeds above 60kmph the Navi gives the rider a significant amount of confidence and the agility of this monkey bike can take you by surprise. The Navi is so versatile and nimble that we rode into the nearest gym in old Delhi -- the Shifan Fitness Centre and were riding in between machines and other equipment just because we could. That is when a thought struck me--Could the body builders working out there lift the bike? So I challenged them and to my shock two of them actually started pumping the Navi iron with ease. The tyres on the Navi are a 90/90 R12 in the front and a 90/100 R10 in the rear. The tyre profile is small like the other scootys available in the market but adds flavor to the looks of this bike. It also means the Navi gets a good fuel average and can be maneuvered with ease. The NAVI returns 60kms to the litre and has a fuel tank of 3.8 litres, giving this bike a range of 228kms on a full tank of petrol. While riding through old Delhi I kept worrying that I might

28 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2016

scrape against something or the space ahead was too narrow but every time I got through with ease. It is wrong to zig-zag on the road but sometimes that is the only way to make it out of the chaos. We weaved in and out of traffic, pedestrians, rickshaws and donkey carts and I must admit the Navi made it all look like childs play. The braking setup on the Navi is a 130mm drum in the front and in the rear. The brakes are progressive and provide enough bite to stop this bike. By the time we were mid-way through our shoot I was beginning to fall in love with this two wheeler. The acceleration was peppy, the ride was solid and the way the Navi responded to my inputs just made it so pleasurable to ride. This bike also comes with a storage box in the front where one store goods with ease. Other accessories available with the Navi are different kinds of sissy guards to protect the frame of the bike. The Navi is quite simple on the features front and is not too swanky. The bike features a simple analogue speed-o-meter with lights for turn indicators, high beam and the odometer. The switch gear is quite ergonomically placed and can be operated with ease. Honda has provided a electric and kick start function with the bike as well. One

also gets a small amount of under seat storage with the Navi. The Navi enters in to the Indian market as a one of a kind product which is ideal for the average college going kid be it a guy or a girl. It is not just practical and convenient but also provides a very peppy and fun ride. I rode it through some of the most congested streets Delhi could offer and in the burning 44 degrees Celsius heat. All the way through I don’t remember frowning even once, everywhere I went people were smiling and pointing at me seemingly showing that this little pocket rocket has won the hearts of the Indian commuters already. The best part is the ex-showroom price which starts at just Rs. 39,500. It is so affordable that even if you are not working and are in college one can simply pick it up using your own pocket money. That is why we at Motown India actually went and bought one for ourselves! Bindaas, isn’t it? MI

or those who have seen or been to the Dakar Rally in South America, you may have definitely admired the drivers and riders, risking their lives literally to finish the entire course through dangerous and inhospitable terrains. It is a test for man and machine, and in every race, man returns triumphant to glory and fame. The Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm may not be so dangerous a race. Yet it is challenging and cumbersome and is often referred to as the “Mini Dakar” rally. This year Jaipur’s Abhishek Mishra who was leading the race in the first four days in his Suzuki Grand

Report: AAKASH S. PAUL Vitara, lost out because of one and only one factor- Lady Luck abandoned him! On the fifth day Mishra along with his navigator PV Srinivas Murthi were eliminated from the game due to a technical issue in their vehicle. The crown finally went to Suresh Rana, a veteran when it comes to winning races of this nature. The 14th edition of Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm rally ended in Jodhpur with Team Maruti Suresh Rana and his navigator Ashwin Naik (driving the Suzuki Grand Vitara) grabbing the first position followed by Amanpreet Ahluwalia and Virendra Kashyap. At the third position stood Niju Padia and his navigator Nirav Mehta. In the Xtreme bike category,

motorcycle rallyist C.S. Satosh (riding a Suzuki RMX450Z) won the Desert Storm. Santosh, who has participated in some of the toughest races around the globe like the gruelling Dakar rally in South America, fought hard to win this race. Polaris India Pvt. Ltd., a world leader in off-road and All-Terrain Vehicles bagged the top three positions in the XTreme T3 category of over 500 cc vehicles. Ace rallyist Guhaan Shetty and D Ganesha Moorthy secured the pole position in the rally while the female duo of N Smitha and Ashika Menezes secured the second position. The pair of Arindam Saikia and Jeevarathinam J stood third in the keenly

contested Xtreme T3 category. The Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm, a six-day affair, was held on the sandy and rocky terrains of the expansive Thar Desert. Sports utility vehicles, cars, motorcycles and all terrain vehicles (ATVs) took part in this rally that saw vehicles racing through some tough terrains as temperatures soared to new highs. Beginning April 4, 2016, around 200 motorsport enthusiasts covered a total distance of approximately 2000km, steering their vehicles through the sand dunes and rocky terrains of some of Rajasthan’s most beautiful locations like Hanumanagarh, Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jaipur to finally reach Jodhpur. After a six-

day ordeal, tears of frustration and joy mixed freely with the grime and dust of Rajasthan. Winners held their trophies high for all to see, while losers paused to ponder what went wrong, perhaps mulling over a new strategy in the next year’s race. The race was divided into different categories. These included XTreme Cars, NDure Cars, Xplore Cars, Moto Quad (Motorcycles and Quads) and XTreme T3 (For ATVs). In the Xtreme category the vehicles have no restrictions on time, while in the other categories the race is based on Time, Speed and Distance. For Abhishek Mishra from Jaipur and his navigator PV Srinivas Murthi, it was bad luck in the end as they were leading in the first four days but were unfortunate to be eliminated on the fifth day as their vehicle faced technical problems. Each day brought out a different challenge for the teams. On the first day, Leg 1 & 2 of the Xtreme category had two competitive stages of 57 Kms and 24 Kms length around Hanumangarh district, nestled on the banks of the River Ghaggar. Day 2 saw the scene shift to Bikaner, located in the heart of the Thar Desert, has its share of sand dunes, majestic forts, palaces and temples. This leg of the Desert Storm was one of the longest routes covering a total distance of approximately 160 kms starting from Badrasar. For the rallyists, it was a drive through Rajasthan’s cultural corridors, as it passed through various small towns and hamlets, including Karnisar, Badrasar, Bhandarwala and Dholera. Locals in their traditional attires stood in awe as the vehicle zipped past them at a distance. On Day3, the rally started from Bikaner and travelled to the ‘Golden City’ of India, Jaisalmer, after travelling around 350 Kms. Leg 3 had 3 competitive stages of 41 Kms, 64.74 kms and 50.71 Kms length between Noorsar, Bandarwala and Naal. On Day 4, after travelling a distance of approximately 100 kms around the hamlets of Kuchri and

Bandha, the motorists began Leg 4 of the Desert Storm Rally. Leg 4 of the Desert Storm 2016 had one competitive stage of 100 Kms. It was on Day 5 that Suresh Rana, also famously known as Manali man, clinched the lead. Leg 5 had three competitive stages of over 217Kms, between Turkon Ki Basti, Majid kiBasti and Mangaliwas. Located approximately 53 kms from Jaisalmer, Turkon ki Basti, is known for its sand dunes, sparse population and extremely helpful locals, cheering the speeding cars. Day 5 also saw the first night stage in Turkon ki Basti when the area was illuminated and bore a festive resemblance. On Day 6 the rally ended in the Blue City of Jodhpur with Team Maruti Suresh Rana and his navigator Ashwin Naik garnering the first position followed by Amanpreet Ahluwalia and Virendra Kashyap. At the third position stood Niju Padia and his navigator Nirav Mehta. In the bike category, celebrated motorcycle rallyist C. S Santosh won the Desert Storm. Rana later told journalists, “This was one of my toughest motorsport rally. The scorching heat of the desert, new rally routes added to the difficulties. However, this only encourages me to participate the next year. Can’t wait to be back again.” Equally ecstatic was C S Santosh who said, “I couldn’t be happier. I feel at home when I am rallying, and the difficult terrains of the desert are an added joy to conquer. This has been an extremely challenging and satisfying year so far. I would work hard to continue this winning streak.” Santosh in fact, defended the champion’s tag in the Maruti Suzuki Desert Storm in style as he powered his Suzuki RMX450Z Rally to a comfortable win in the Moto class by a great margin of over nine minutes ahead of many worthy competitors after close to 800 km of racing. At the end it was a worthwhile Thar challenge for all the participants!

Valentino Rossi wins MotoGP Championship in Spain; Records 113th career victory The three biggest names of MotoGP—Valentino Rossi, Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez— raced like there was no tomorrow and then finally Rossi romped home victorious at the Gran Premio Red Bull de España. The MotoGP Spanish Grand Prix saw Rossi lead from start to finish, winning from Lorenzo and Marquez with ease. Rossi, Lorenzo and Marquez had filled the top three spots of

almost every practice session and lined up next to each other on the front row of the grid. As the lights went out, the racers in their medium rear tyres gripped the throttles and leaned forward as they took off to the sound of thunderous applaud from spectators and the roar of their motorcycle engines as it fired away on the track. Valentino Rossi led the pack from the very beginning , followed

by his teammate from Movistar Yamaha Jorge Lorenzo and Repsol Honda Team duo Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa almost snapping their heels. Fans were transfixed on the leading four, few noticing the incredible start of Eugene Laverty (Aspar Team MotoGP) who was in eighth as the third lap began and the leading Independent Team rider. Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) chased Aleix Espargaro

(Team Suzuki Ecstar) for fifth with Maverick Viñales (Team Suzuki Ecstar) on the tail of his Ducati. Dovizioso’s teammate, Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team) was having a terrible race, dropping like a stone down to 14th in the opening laps. All of the leaders lapped in the mid 1’40s, Rossi trying to escape as Marquez looked for a way through on Lorenzo. His lead would soon be over half a second, Rossi upped his pace lap after

MOTORSPORT lap and drew out hundredths of a second at each corner. Before long the gap was at a second, Valentino Rossi seemingly doing as his teammate had done so many times before and breaking the field early in the race. No matter what Lorenzo did he was unable to close in on Rossi nor shake off Marquez. Disaster struck for Dovizioso on the tenth lap as yet again, through no fault of his own, his race came to an end. The factory Ducati rider was forced to sit up as his Desmosedici GP encountered a terminal issue, forcing him to ride

back into the pits and once again make the long walk across the garage to watch the race. Overtakes were scarce at the front but the battle for seventh place produced some thrilling racing, Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) leading the group ahead of Laverty. Just behind them Andrea Iannone and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda) pushed each other hard for 10th position, not what either rider wanted before the race. In front, Pedrosa had Aleix Espargaro to contend with, Pedrosa working hard to hold off the Suzuki man. Since his fifth

in Austin, Espargaro has been in some of the best form of his career after a setup breakthrough. For the 113th time in his career and the 87th time in the premier class, Valentino Rossi pulled a wheelie across the line to celebrate victory. After the disappointment of Austin, the result is exactly what ‘The Doctor’ needed. Behind him Jorge Lorenzo took his 100th premier class podium finish and Marquez was able to keep the lead of the Championship, his lead reduced slightly to 17 points. Pedrosa withstood Espargaro’s challenge to end in fourth ahead of

the Spaniard. Maverick Viñales (Team Suzuki Ecstar), Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team), Pol Espargaro (Monster Yamaha Tech 3), Eugene Laverty (Aspar Team MotoGP) and Hector Barbera (Avintia Racing) completed the top ten. Alvaro Bautista (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) crashed out of the race at Turn 11 after battling with Cal Crutchlow in the opening stages. Binder victorious in Moto3 World Championship; Mahindra’s Bagnaia is third For someone who started last, this was a victory that was welldeserved as Brad Binder of Red Bull KTM Ajo blasted through the pack of motorcycles to win the Moto3 World Championship in Spain. This was the fourth round of the Spanish Grand Prix. As the players were lined up on the grid, Brad Binder was sent to the back of the grid, moving every rider up a position on the grid. The penalty came as the result of a

mapping infringement, the South African’s KTM was found to be using non-homologated ECU software after Qualifying. Nicolo Bulega of Italy for Sky Racing Team came in second followed by Francesco Bagnaia of Aspar Mahindra Team came in third. Bagnaia Mahindra’s Bagnaia claimed his second topthree podium finish of the four-race-old season at the Spanish Grand Prix, keeping his head in a fearsome front-runner battle that lasted the full 23 laps of a typically intense Moto3 race. Bagnaia had put the Mahindra MGP3O in third place at the opening round in Qatar. The Spanish podium return marks the start of the European season, and confirms the confidence of the only Indian constructor in the World

Championship that the more traditional and technical European circuits will better suit the sweet handling of the all-new 250cc racer. With machine development still at an early stage, Aspar Mahindra riders Bagnaia and Jorge Martin had kept the points coming in over the next two races in Argentina and the USA; and hopes were high for a strong result in Spain after Bagnaia qualified a strong fourth. The 19-year-old Italian was promoted to the front row when

pole qualifier Brad Binder was put to the back. As the race began Nicolo Bulega (Sky Racing Team VR46) lined up in pole ahead of Jorge Navarro (Estrella Galicia 0,0) with Francesco Bagnaia (Aspar Mahindra Team Moto3) moved onto the front row due to Binder’s penalty. As the lights went out, the 35-rider field lurched forward. From third Bagnaia made a great start on his Mahindra to lead into Turn 1. Binder in the meantime, moved his way up very quickly.

There was further disaster further back between Haas’s Esteban Gutierrez, the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg, Marcus Ericsson’s Sauber and Rio Haryanto’s Manor. Max Verstappen looked set for a strong sixth for Toro Rosso until his Ferrari engine broke on the 34th lap, handing the position to Fernando Alonso who had made a blinding start for McLaren. hey say money can buy you everything, except things like happiness and extreme joy. Well that’s just a silly myth and a figment of someone else’s imagination. Money can buy everything--Fast cars, fast bikes, pretty girls, barrel loads of the bubbly and also, in today’s horribly crowded scenario, a lot of space to race your car.

As journalists we are the fortunate ones, since we do have the liberty and a great amount of luck to step into a rich man’s world and experience a bit of their life. However momentary it may be, it does bring a smile to your face and a great amount of thrill and happiness. Yes, Happiness, with a capital ‘H’! Thus, when Audi called us to experience their fast cars on the Buddh International Circuit, in Greater Noida, happiness

knew no bounds. Audi has this programme for its wealthy customers to experience the power of their machines on a race track. It’s a much better experience than honking your stranded car in the middle of a crowded road with some bovines starring at you with no care in the world. Launched in 2012, the Audi Sportscar Experience (ASE a first of its kind initiative for customers to experience Audi Sportscars on a racetrack), customers get

an opportunity to enrol in the global race car experience. To date, over 2000 customers have participated in this programme. As part of this programme, Audi sports car customers get invited to be trained by Audi trainers on various driving techniques including cornering, braking and safety measures to be considered while driving a sports car. The customers get introduced to the features of the car and also get a live experience to test all the features of the sports cars in a

AUDI TT - TRACK RUN The Audi TT was the first car in the lineup, it is powered by a 1984cc TFSI, petrol engine. The TT puts out 226.6bhp of power from 45006200rpm and 370Nm of torque from 1600-4300rpm. As we rolled out of the pit lane for a demo lap the vehicle began displaying its mechanical capabilities. The quattro all wheel drive system ensured there was enough power provided to the wheels with the most traction. While on the back straight we touched 212kmph but I knew the vehicle could go faster if I pushed it a bit harder. The Audi TT has a top speed of 250kmph and can go from 0-100 in 5.3 seconds flat. Even while we were driving through tight corners

the vehicle maintained a good line with a minimal amount of understeer being experienced.

AUDI RS 7 SPORTBACK - TRACK RUN There are cars and then there is the RS 7--A monster in disguise waiting patiently to be let loose. Powered by a 4.0 litre, V8, TFSI engine, this monster churns out 700Nm of torque from 1750-5500rpm and 552.5bhp from 5700-6600rpm. To put it as bluntly as I can, the RS 7 is like Arnold Schwarzenegger sitting in the body of Mia Khalifa, a real treat to look at and powerful beyond words. As we rolled out of the pit lane we were cautioned about the power of this vehicle. Gently easing the accelerator I gauged its power and then turned it loose on the back straight. I took the RS 7 to about 236kmph but it can go right up to the 280kmph mark. The RS 7 can reach 100kmph from standstill in 3.7 seconds. However the real delight was the handling of the vehicle. With all the power and torque engineered into the vehicle one can begin to doubt their own

corching heat and some very nasty terrains don’t really make a great combination. In such a scenario, expecting people to enjoy and smile is like asking for the moon. But throw in a few sturdy and good looking Audi SUVs, and the scenario changes dramatically and everyone’s sloshed with joy and the world suddenly becomes so meaningful. This was what happened when Audi Noida- Audi Delhi West invited a select few for an off-road experience in their Q series. A special track was developed for the off-roading experience in Noida. The vehicles included the Audi Q7, Audi Q5 and Audi Q3. Apart from the luxurious interiors of the

car and the ambient climate within its cabins (thanks to the perfect working of the air-conditioner), what really thrilled people was the experience they derived from the Audi quattro technology. In its fifth edition, the multi-city Audi Q Drive programme will be held across 30 dealer locations in India. “The Audi Q range highlights the sportiness, the sophistication and the progressiveness of the brand, The Audi Q Drive showcases the functionality and capability of our SUVs while demonstrating their outstanding quattro capabilities on an off-road track. For all the Audi enthusiasts, it is the perfect opportunity to experience the grit and strength of the Audi range in a natural offroading environment,” said Joe

King, Head, Audi India. Quattro (meaning four in Italian) is also a registered trademark of Audi AG. The famous Audi quattro permanent all-wheel drive system was first officially shown in 1980. Audi still uses the quattro permanent all-wheel-drive on their cars, in fact, most of them come stock with it. The all-wheel drive system brings the most power to the wheel with the most grip on the street, together with the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) you are able to drive in every weather situation or performance demand without sliding around. Mind you, different models of the Audi models use the quattro differently. In the Q 5, around 60 pc of power is there on the rear wheels while 40pc is in front. It’s

kind of evenly distributed unlike in cars like the R8 where you have much more power going to the rear wheels. So whether it was those huge deep trenches or those steep inclines, it was quattro at its best with the Q series offroad drive. The Audi drive was held over two days in Delhi NCR and people got a chance to drive the Audi Q SUVs under trained supervision to understand all the nuances of the advanced technology that Audi SUVs offer. So, everything about good traction, better acceleration, excellent cornering and directional stability and good handling characteristics of the Q series were amply demonstrated in this drive.

INTERVIEW WITH

ARAS GIBIEZA For your stunts you are riding the Suzuki Gixxer. How do you find the bike and have you modified it heavily to perform your stunts? The Suzuki motorcycle is dedicated for this Suzzuki Gixxer Day tour. All the modifications were made in India itself when I first checked out the bike. You are a two-time European Stunt Riding Champion, which is the bike you usually do all your stunts on? Can you also

tell us about the modifications that you do on the bike to ensure that it performs well during the stunt show? Also what are the kinds of stunts you do at these Stunt RIding Championships? Back home I ride on the Kawasaki Ninja model 636cc. engine. My bike was built by “Racetech” company in Lithuania. They have changed the frame, tank, sprocket and brakes, but I’m also preparing Suzuki GSXR 750 K5 for a new session. In stunt riding championships I do it hard tricks, like: switchback wheelie, standing on the tank with hand, jumping on high chair, 360 stoppie , kangaroo and unicycle trick, supertower and a lot of different position in drift. Can you tell us briefly about your journey into this stunt world? How were you

44 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2016

drawn into this whole thing? Were you influenced by anyone in your family or friend circle and when did it all start for you? When I was child I always wanted a scooter. So one day my grandfather bought one for me and I started to do some tricks with the scooter itself. My mother and father realised that I am heavily inspired and excited by a motorcycle sport… As a teenager I started to compete in superbike races. And four years later I realised that I need to do something more and I started doing stunts and compete in competition. My family always supported me. I am sure that performing stunts also has its own set of risks. Have you experienced any kind of misadventure while performing your stunts? Yes, I had some broken bones because of which I couldn’t compete in competitions.

As compared to Europe, do you see a young country like India can benefit a lot from stunt shows and championships? Yes you have thousands of stunt riders and enthusiasts in the country and some of them are riding really well. So at least a few of them should be reaching the top level globally. Doing stunts requires a proper environment and equipment? What is your advice to those aspiring to become a stunt biker? When you start to do stunt riding, you must ensure that you need to warm your body before every training session. Always check your bike part, use proper gear and train in safe places. Lastly, what is your view about this country India and its people? I’m visiting India for the third time and enjoying very much. I love India. The country is so nice and the people so friendly.

o you how many people die in road accidents in India every year? Around 200,000. And do you know how many people die in road accidents all over the globe every year? Around 1.25 million. These figures have been stated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) in a report titled “Global Road Safety Report” in 2015. Even though today Indians have the choice to

drive some very safe and well built cars, they have a dismal record when it comes to observing traffic norms and driving safely. Enthusiastic fathers can often be spotted with their toddlers on their laps while driving around. At Motown India we insist, there is no better way to endanger the life of your child. Rather it would make a lot more sense, if the kids were made to sit behind the wheels of vehicles their size! Yes, welcome to the world of toy cars and bikes. and make. The ones that can seat kids can cost anywhere from a few thousand rupees to as much as Rs 25000 and above. Here too, it all depends on the quality and performance. So whether it is a dinky die cast toy or a radio controlled toy car or bike, these serve one major purpose in the lives of children: Entertainment! Coming to these toy cars and bikes for kids, you can directly order them from any of the e-commerce sites that have sprung up all over the internet space or you can walk into an upmarket mall in your town or city and look for the right store for kids. The Motown India editorial team spent a considerable amount of time with a couple of kids and their toy vehicles in a farmhouse in Delhi. The stars they were observing were young Aveer Hans and Viaan Ambawata. To begin with, letting kids play with their own vehicles is the best thing a parent can do

to entertain their kids. Also, when it comes to safety, there is no better way to keep the kids occupied, yet thoroughly entertained. All one requires is a bit of unhindered space and an adult to supervise the kids. Adults, at best can help a kid when the toy vehicle experiences a wheel spin or gets stuck in the thick grass or topples over for some strange reason. India is today flooded with Chinese toy cars and bikes of varied quality. Since these vehicles run on battery, it’s important to ensure that these batteries are original and that the toy is made of good quality. Once this is done, you can then get them to hear their favourite nursery rhyme:

English countryside T he United Kingdom isn’t just London or Scotland; it’s a whole lot more as I was to discover during my recent visit to the English countryside. Cornwall and Devon which are part of the English countryside are blessed with beautiful beaches, quaint little English pubs, good ole fish and chips, rolling vineyards, and most important a warmth and hospitality that one may find missing in big cities. A veritable haven for foodies and wine enthusiasts, the English countryside can throw up enough surprises to keep a food enthusiast happy and busy with its unique gourmet offerings. Each region here has its distinct culinary identity. The picture-post-card-perfect setting of Plymouth Gin distillery in the charming town of Plymouth is a great place to visit. 1400s and is one of the oldest buildings in Plymouth making it one of the city’s most precious heritages. This is the only English distillery that offers gin enthusiasts an opportunity to visit at any time of the year, and has been in operation since 1793. Made by one man in a Victorian copper still, each batch is handcrafted and every stage of production is overseen by Master Distiller Sean Harrison. This award winning Plymouth gin owes its sweet, soft taste to the unusually pure and soft water from Dartmoor National Park. It has the distinction of being mentioned in the first ever documented recipe for the Dry Martini in 1896 and is still acknowledged as the perfect Martini Gin by bartenders worldwide. I opted for The Gin Connoisseur’s Tour that lasted for about an hour and a half-a unique opportunity to compare different types of gin as part of a tutored blind tasting. Five shot glasses of gin were displayed along with a container that had various botanicals used in gins such as coriander seeds, orange peel, lemon peel, juniper berries and

green cardamom. Plymouth Gin is one of the only 18 British food and drinks which has geographical protection meaning it has to be made within Plymouth’s ancient city walls. While in Devon, a meal at Treby Arms (made popular by Chef Anton Piotrowski who won MasterChef in 2012) is a great idea if you wish to eat in a space that is cozy with the casual vibe of a pub. Traditional British fare is served here in a contemporary fashion and the menu which changes here every day boasted of dishes such as Lobster Tail Dog, dill mayonnaise, skinny fries & leek ash brioche, Creedy Carver Duck, duck hearts, black pudding bon bon, duck leg, Pip’s asparagus and Roe Deer, parmesan orzo pasta, wild asparagus & snowball onion. Chef Anton uses local ingredients and herbs, retains essential flavours and yet manages to push the boundaries which results in food that is superior in terms of quality. premium wines and is acknowledged especially for their sparkling wines which are known to be at par with wines from Champagne. Winemaker Sam Lindo showed us around the vineyards and the winery which has been producing awardwinning wines in this beautiful spot of Cornwall ever since 1989. Patronized by the royal family of England among others, the wines produced here are served in Michelin starred restaurants all over the United Kingdom. Tours organized by the winery are relaxed and friendly and the vineyards were gorgeous with vines planted over acres and acres of sloping hills. The highlight of the vineyards is definitely the adjoining terraces where we relaxed with a glass of wine. It was enlightening to know that English wines have an advantage as compared to other sparkling wines because the legislation here is more relaxed. Besides in England sparkling wines can be produced from other grape varietals not just the usual varieties used for Champagne. We visited the Padstow Seafood School run by English celebrity chef Rick Stein and his team. This cookery school offers one day fish and shellfish cooking courses, half day and full day courses, skill workshops, for those who wish to learn cooking from expert chefs in a beautiful location that has a view out over the estuary. without a taste of Cornish clotted cream and jam slathered on top of scones served with English tea. Truly iconic tastes of Cornwall, firmly rooted in the county’s traditions, a great place to enjoy this sinful delicacy is Rosemergy Farm in Morvah. The scones are baked to crumbly perfection and are served warm straight from the oven to the table. My affable English guide Sarah Marshall informed me that in Devon they layer the scones with cream first and then a spoonful of jam is spread, while the Cornish spread a layer of jam first on the scones and then the cream comes on often leading to heated debates between Englishmen and women! Old world charm and simplicity, local food served in time honored indigenous style against the backdrop of beautiful coast lines, cobbled streets, English pubs, haunted manors makes a visit to the English countryside nothing short of a theatrical experience. INDIAN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

ON A REBOUND T Report: MOTOWN INDIA BUREAU

he financial year gone by (April 2015-March 2016) has been an extremely positive one for the Indian CV industry. Laggards are still there, but the overall performance is looking good. Now with the predictions that monsoons in 2016 will be dot on time and that it will be normal all across the country, there is no better news for the Indian automotive industry,

especially the CV segment. The CV industry seems to be one a rebound. “With sales volumes of 0.8 million units annually, India ranks amongst the top-7 markets for Commercial Vehicles (CV), globally. It is also the fourth largest market for heavy-duty trucks after China, United States and Europe. Over the past decade, the industry has grown at CAGR (%) of 4.6% driven by growing economy, increasing demand from infrastructure and

58 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2016

mining sectors, relatively untapped potential for last mile connectivity and a supportive financing industry. The industry outlook also remains favourable in view of Government’s ongoing economic reforms, which are likely to drive investments in the infrastructure and manufacturing space and as a result demand for CVs. Thus, given the reasonable scale, favourable growth prospects and large untapped market in rural areas, foreign OEMS have taken a keen

interest in the industry,” observes a study undertaken by ICRA. Let’s do some number crunching and see the progress of the Indian CV industry. According to the data provided by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), the Indian CV segment domestic sales grew by 26.97pc (676,408 units) for the year April – March 2011, as compared to the previous year. Exports during the period grew by 69.51pc (76,297 units)

while production grew by 32.63pc (752,735 units). Now five years later, after a few years of a downswing, the Indian CV segment has shown some robust growth. For the year April-March 2016, the CV industry domestic sales have grown by 11.51 pc (685,704 units), while exports grew by 16.97 units to 101,689 units and production grew by 12.10pc to 782,814 units. In a span of five odd years, the growth in the commercial vehicle industry has been very marginal. These figures do not include the performance of some MNCs like Daimler India, Scania Commercial Vehicles and Volvo Buses. Though numbers are looking up now, it’s got to be realised that the Indian CV industry is far from the peak it had set for itself in terms of domestic sales and production for the year April-March 2012. For that fiscal, the CV domestic sales had grown by 18.20pc to touch 809,532 units, while production was at an all time high with a growth of 19.83pc at 911,574 units. Exports had also grown by

25.15pc to 92,663 units. The ICRA study further states that “Owing to unique characteristics like highly fragmented and price sensitive nature of road logistics industry, poor road conditions, practice of overloading (products not designed for such extreme usage) and dependence on relatively less advanced trucking platforms, some of the foreign OEMs have had limited success in their initial attempt. In addition, their focus on bringing global platforms in the Indian market with limited investments in local sourcing and distribution (due to weak after sales support) also contributed to modest performance. Nevertheless, the scenario is gradually changing now. While on the demand front, the market is seeing a shift in favour of advanced trucking platforms driven by not just regulatory requirements but also changing customer expectations, on supply side, some of the foreign OEMs have also shifted their focus on mass market segments and invested in India to develop

models that are customized to Indian requirements.” Whether the 2015-16 fiscal year performance is a tad lower than the peak year of 2011-12, the fact is that the Indian CV industry is on a rebound. Barring AMW Motors Ltd and Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd, every other company be it Ashok Leyland, Force Motors, Isuzu Motors India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors, VECVEicher, VECV-Volvo has done well for itself. The largest contributor to the growth in domestic sales happens to be Tata Motors (304,256 units), followed by Mahindra & Mahindra (166,783 units) and Ashok Leyland (127,321 units). Ashok Leyland, on the other hand recorded the highest growth in domestic sales in terms of percentage. The company recorded a growth of 38.39pc in domestic sales with 127,321 units. It is also very disheartening to know that some companies have not really performed well in the last few years in the CV industry. Take the case of Asia Motor Works (now AMW Motors Ltd). Believe it or not, in 2011-12

financial year, this company grew by 47.54pc in domestic segment by selling 10,021 units. Production for the year stood at 10,008 units (52.14pc). Since then its sales have been plummeting. In 201213 fiscal it recorded a growth of minus (-) 34.81pc by selling a mere 6,533 units. Production stood at 6,844 units (-31.61pc). The disaster story for AMW continued with the company recording domestic sales of 4606 units for the year 201314, a negative growth of minus (-)29.50pc. Production too slumped in the same year by -34.57pc to 4,478 units. In 2014-15, AMW Motors recorded domestic sales of 3,025 units, recording a degrowth of (-) 34.32pc. Production too slumped to 3,009 units, a degrowth of minus (-)32.80pc. By 2015-16, AMW Motors’ fortunes had taken a real dip. For the year 2015-16, domestic sales for AMW slipped by a massive 71.97pc to record 848 units. Production too dipped by a massive minus (-) 71.82pc to a mere 848 units.

Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles / Light Commercial Vehicles Five odd years back, domestic sales of Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) grew from 244,944 units (fiscal 2009-10) to 322,788 units in 20102011 but de-grew to 302,373 units in fiscal 2015-16. On the other hand, during the same period under consideration, domestic sales of LCVs grew 287,777 units in 2009-10 to 353,620 units in 2010-11 and

Now that Isuzu has set up a greenfield facility in SriCity in Andhra Pradesh with a capacity of manufacturing 50,000 units per annum of pick-ups, the competition in this Light Commercial Vehicle segment is likely to be intensified. Maruti Suzuki is also expected to enter the segment over the nearto-medium term. Maruti is an established OEM with deep understanding of the Indian market VOLVO AND DAIMLER HAVE EMERGED AS THE FRONTRUNNERS AMONG FOREIGN OEMS Having set-up full-fledged manufacturing base in India and developed vehicles to meet to local requirements, Volvo (through its JV with Eicher Motors) and Daimler have emerged as the front-runners among new entrants. Daimler, which began operations in June 2012, has managed to gain approximately 7.9% market share in the M&HCV truck segment,

www.motownindia.com

while Volvo is relying on its new range of Pro Series trucks to gain traction. Among other European players, Scania is also present in Indian market but has restricted its presence to niche applications like deep mining tippers and luxury coaches so far, restricting its investment to only an assembly facility. In 2006, MAN had also entered the Indian market. However, it has met with limited success and has been working on tweaking its product offerings past couple years to satisfy local requirements, says ICRA. Scania has been represented in the Indian market since 2007. In 2011, Scania established the company Scania Commercial Vehicles India Pvt. Ltd. to strengthen its presence through sales to additional segments of the Indian commercial vehicle market and to widen its offer of Sustainable Transport Solutions. Scania has launched a range of on-road haulage truck models specially adapted for the Indian

market – India’s most powerful puller the R 580 V8 6x4, the G 460 6x4 and the G 410 6x2 and also the off-road P 410 8x4 Mining and Coal Tipper. Scania has a partnership with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) in the Mining segment. In the beginning of 2013 Scania launched a new bus range, Scania Metrolink 12, 13.7 and 14.5. Scania handed over the first ethanol run Green Bus in India to the city of Nagpur in August 2014. With this ethanol bus, Scania also introduced an engine complying with Bharat stage 5, which is a huge step to minimize emissions. The company inaugurated its first Industrial Facility in Narasapura, Bangalore, in October 2013 and inaugurated its first bus plant in March 2015. With a collective investment of Rs. 3000 crore, this facility serves as the centre of the company’s commercial operations in the country. Scania has sold more than 1500 trucks and over 250 buses in the Indian market. Scania has a current production

capacity of 2500 trucks and 1000 buses, and aims to double its capacity by 2020. The competition from foreign players is not just limited to M&HCVs. With growing demand for last-mile connectivity, OEMs have also set their eyes on the LCV segment as well. Although the market has faced headwinds over the past couple of years owing to over-capacity and tight funding environment, the long-term drivers for LCV segment remain favourable, due to low penetration levels, says the ICRA study. Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the wholly-owned subsidiary of Daimler AG, has had a successful 2015. Domestic sales increased by 37 percent to 14,000 units on the strength of the BharatBenz brand’s powerful product lineup. Following its market launch in September 2012, Daimler’s Indian truck and bus brand has introduced 20 products so. Far more than 30,000 BharatBenz vehicles have since

COVER REPORT been delivered to customers Erich Nesselhauf, Managing Director and CEO of Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, said: “2015 has been another successful year for us. With our portfolio of modern trucks, we have powered ahead on our growth course domestically in India and in our export business. This success was made possible thanks to the excellent contributions of the entire team and our partners.” Demand for BharatBenz products in 2015 rose especially in the heavy-duty segment. New tailored applications for the mining and the construction segments, such as the highly recognised BharatBenz 3143 CM, resonated well with customers. At the same time, the company’s FUSObranded export business - as part of Daimler Trucks Asia - continued to grow favorably. The year 2015 was good for Daimler India Commercial Vehicles due to various milestones that were achieved: Start of bus production in the 425-crores expansion of the company’s manufacturing operations in Oragadam, entry into the bus segment with BharatBenz staff buses and Mercedes-Benz Super-High-Deck (SHD) luxury coach Launch of second wave of truck products – including BharatBenz high-powered engine trucks, BharatBenz heavy duty tractors Launch of the BharatBenz 3143

committed to sustainably grow our business as part of Daimler Trucks Asia. Both in the medium and heavy-duty segment we will once more raise standards and customer value. At the same time, Indian-made FUSO trucks will play a key role in opening up important growth markets in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.” “Overall, we believe that competitive intensity in the Indian CV industry is likely to rise as OEMs expand their product offerings and distribution reach. However, the ability of foreign OEMs to gain significant traction

will hinge on the performance of their vehicles from the perspective of total cost of ownership. While it may be argued that the product portfolios of foreign OEMs would certainly score above those of Indian OEMs in terms of technological advancements, their current product portfolio need to be customized to Indian conditions. In addition, domestic OEMs would continue to score above them in terms of easier and cost-effective serviceability, established re-sale values (for their vehicles) and strong brand equity,” the ICRA study noted.

NEWS Actia India to unveil latest End Of Line diagnostic solution for vehicles Actia India, a JV between Actia Automotive and DMG Finance & Investments, has recently unveiled its latest End Of Line (EOL) diagnostic solutions, developed for Renault, on their latest Kwid vehicle. This is the first time such a diagnostic solution is implemented in India automotive industry. In order to achieve this breakthrough, Actia India had to solve the main challenge of proposing a unique software suite combined to a hardware kit able to analyse diagnostic tests made on vehicles, at a cost efficient price. This achievement has been possible thanks to a “jugaad innovation” approach developed in collaboration with Renault, taking into account Renault technological legacy while processing the necessary adjustments and removing the superfluous aspects of the diagnostic. The MoU was signed under the aegis of the Minister of Steel and Mines, Narendra Singh Tomar, the Secretary Steel, Aruna Sundarajan at the occasion while senior management from the Mahindra Group - Zhooben Bhiwandiwala, Managing Partner, Mahindra Partners, Sumit Issar, Managing Director, Mahindra Intertrade Ltd. and Shailendra Krishna Tripathi, Chairman & Managing Director, MSTC Ltd. were also present. Auto-shredding in India is largely an unorganised activity with vehicles long past their usable life still in use, especially in rural and semi-urban India. Older vehicles are currently dismantled in an unscientific manner, hazardous to the environment. The extent to which the vehicle is recycled is also very minimal, with most vehicular residue making its way into landfills. The proposed facility will be equipped with fully automated end-of-life vehicle recycling equipment and will be India’s first such facility. Intertrade owns and operates the country’s largest network of steel service centres across the Automotive, Power and Home Appliances verticals.

TECHNOLOGY

Innovative ring catalyst for efficient NOx reduction from Continental International technology company Continental has chosen the 37th Vienna Motor Symposium to present an innovative emissions control solution for downsized turbocharged gasoline engines. The introduction of Real Driving Emissions legislation will require vehicles with this widely used engine concept to meet strict nitrogen oxide (NOx) limits in all driving situations. This poses a new challenge by demanding efficient NOx reduction across a very broad spectrum of engine operating conditions, and not “just” in the current test cycles. However, the existing closecoupled catalytic converters of today offer little margin for any further improvements in lambda distribution. On the US front meanwhile, the LEV III SULEV 30 standards stipulate a 70pc reduction in fleet-average nitrogen oxide emissions by 2025. “In order to meet RDE and SULEV 30 legislation on NOx emissions, a 3-way catalytic converter must achieve a conversion rate close to 100%. That is only possible, if efficient NOx reduction is maintained uniformly in all operating situations,” says Dr. Markus Distelhoff, Executive Vice President Fuel & Exhaust Management Business Unit in Continental‘s Powertrain Division, adding that “The innovative ring catalyst in combination with our LS microstructured metal foil will

play an important role in meeting this requirement.” NOx Reduction: Leaving Nothing to Chance High-performance 3-way catalytic converters of today already achieve a NOx reduction rate of 99pc. But that still doesn’t go far enough, and a further efficiency hike must be targeted. For downsized turbocharged gasoline engines, this presents two challenges. Firstly, cylinderto-cylinder variations in exhaust gas composition mean that the fuel-to-air ratio (lambda value) can deviate from the ideal value, adversely affecting NOx conversion. The aim must be to avoid such cylinder influences on exhaust lambda, by flow mixing. However, this is difficult in the case of a close-coupled catalytic converter, because the down pipe to the catalytic converter is not long enough. This is why many new vehicles now feature a second – underfloor – catalyst to convert the remainder of the nitrogen oxide emissions, a solution which comes at the price of additional weight and increased exhaust back pressure. Secondly, in some operating situations, the catalytic converter’s ability to achieve a consistent and uniform NOx conversion rate can be adversely affected by the turbocharger system. This is because the opening of the turbine bypass valve (wastegate)

Close-coupled annular catalytic converter developed by Continental supports nearcomplete NOx conversion in turbocharged gasoline engines. above a certain engine speed affects the flow distribution, resulting in non-uniform exhaust flow. This can potentially lead to faster local ageing of the catalytic converter and to a deterioration in NOx reduction performance. Advantages of the Ring Catalyst Continental has developed an innovative solution to address both these challenges: The ring catalyst. An internal pipe running through the core of the ring catalyst and all the way along it provides the necessary additional length to allow better exhaust flow mixing. At the end of this pipe, the gas is redirected through 180°. Only then does it flow through the catalytically active portion of the catalyst, which surrounds the inner pipe like a sleeve. “This way the annular catalyst extends the

flow path without extending the overall length of the catalyst. This allows the catalyst to be placed close to the engine, so there is no increase in the time required to reach light-off temperature for converting NOx emissions,” says Rolf Brück, Head of Catalysts & Filters Product Line, Fuel & Exhaust Management. “With this design, the swirl effect from the turbocharger wastegate gas actually assists exhaust mixing in the internal pipe.” The active section of the ring catalyst is wound from Continental’s innovative LS metal substrate. The longitudinal structures in this material generate micro-level turbulence in the exhaust stream, which helps to direct the nitrogen oxides more effectively towards the catalytically coated catalyst wall, where they are converted.

The core of the catalytic converter is wound from “LS” metal foil, a material developed by Continental. Longitudinal structures (= LS) in this foil or substrate create more turbulence in the exhaust gas. This ensures better contact between the nitrogen oxides and the catalytically coated substrate, resulting in higher conversion efficiency. www.motownindia.com

INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW WITH

SRI KRISHNAN V

Vice President, Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Report: MOTOWN INDIA BUREAU Connected cars which are a result of an integration of smart phones with a vehicle are now becoming a way of life all over the world. How has this trend picked up in India especially among vehicle manufacturers in India? Obviously, the needs and demands in India are much different as compared to those abroad; is RBEI developing a package especially for the Indian market? The most obvious form of connected cars as we know today stems from the integration of smartphones to the infotainment system of a car. It is only natural that with more than 100 million smartphones and 2.5 million passenger cars sold every year the trend of smartphone integration in the Indian market is set to increase. Bosch has been a pioneer in introducing latest trends in the Indian market. We were the first in India to introduce the basic smartphone integration features like hands free call, contacts download and music streaming almost a decade back. We continue this trend. We introduced the first OE infotainment system with Apple Carplay in Indian market. Bosch ensures that these technologies are adapted to the Indian markets along with the introduction in the European markets as the essential needs in India regarding smartphone integration is not hugely different from the rest of the world. This does not mean that there are no demands that are unique to India. As new roads are being laid and more townships gets constructed every year, the need for up-to-date maps and POIs (points of interest)

can easily be delivered through connectivity. The bigger picture of connected cars involves much more than smartphone integration. There are many more use cases like emergency detection and assistance, preventive maintenance through remote diagnosis, software updates over the air and driver assistance functionalities. Bosch views the car as a third living space and a personal assistant. RBEI is working on all these technologies for global market needs in collaboration with the Bosch entities in the respective regions. Of course we develop and customise solutions for Indian market. At the recently concluded Auto Expo in India, Robert Bosch showcased few innovations in this area. What were they? What was the public perception about it? Were they able to understand and appreciate the new age technology? Imagine a single technology that can reduce a vehicle’s fuel consumption, foresee when maintenance is needed, and display everything on the car owner’s smartphone. Bosch has developed a comprehensive connectivity platform solution which can do all that – a solution, moreover, that is tailored to the Indian market. In line with its “in the region-for-the-region” strategy, Bosch presented its Intelligent Transport Management System (iTraMS) at the Bosch’s Technology Exposition in Noida on February 3, 2016. Its features include tracking of vehicle location, condition monitoring, and performance analysis. The flexible new Bosch

72 | MOTOWN INDIA | MAY 2016

solution works in passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and off highway vehicles. iTraMS is not only available in newly produced cars, but also as a retrofit solution. By making it available for as many vehicles as possible, Bosch is helping to speed up the transition to safer and more ecological driving. Another outstanding example for local development is Bosch’s “e-Call”, which was developed with contributions by the Bosch India engineering team. It truly resonates with the companies “Invented for life” ethos. Vehicles equipped with the safety system trigger an automated emergency call whenever a crash happens. Using data-mining techniques, the solution considers variables such as real-time vehicle-, accident, and environment information to estimate the probability of severe injury. This information can be used by emergency service providers to prioritise the type of ambulance service needed to reach an accident location. Bosch’s mySPIN is a highly appealing smartphone integration

solution that creates a perfect device-vehicle link to ensure safe and reliable in-car use. It allows users to continue using their preferred apps on their iOS or Android smartphones in the usual way, without having to compromise on safety. mySPIN also facilitates continuous access to online music services, social networks, and a wide range of smartphone apps. What are the various features and functions that can be offered to consumers through this smart phone integration? These also differ when it comes to cars, trucks and off highway vehicles….can you elaborate? Smartphone integration brings in seamless digital experience by bringing your favourite smartphone apps to the car enabling the driver and the passengers to stay connected with family and friends at the same time ensuring driving safety. These apps are adapted for safe use while driving – information is reduced to the essential

www.motownindia.com

INTERVIEW minimum and the user interface is driven using the car’s build in touchscreen and haptic controls. In addition, connectivity to infrastructure using mobile communication technology opens up a plethora of applications that make driving comfortable and convenient, for example, real-time traffic information and up-to-date information on POIs. The scenario in commercial vehicles is different. On board connectivity control units help to achieve optimised trip plan, fleet utilisation, fuel efficiency, and maintenance costs. The unit can also monitor the driver behaviour which opens up unique business models for the Insurance companies. For example a fleet manager in logistics can monitor and control the temperature inside a refrigerated truck that transport perishable goods. Connected applications in off highway vehicles are primarily related to asset management and preventive maintenance, making sure that expensive assets are made use of in the most efficient way. In connected cars what are the different hardware parts that come into

play? Does RBEI make the hardware too? If not where do you source it from? Do connected vehicles also involve a major tweaking of the electrical / electronic architecture of a vehicle? At the basic level, the central component is the infotainment system which is connected to smartphones using short range, wired or wireless technologies like USB or Bluetooth. The smartphone acts as the telecommunication gateway. There is an emerging trend of an exclusive connectivity control unit that has a built-in telecommunication and GPS module. In both cases these units are connected to the vehicles communication network to gather and process information from various other ECUs (Electronic Control Units) and sensors. Bosch designs the necessary hardware and software in house and manufactures them in Bosch facilities across the world. The existing vehicle network architecture supports connectivity to achieve basic features. The major evolution of architecture is taking place due to parallel trends like ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) leading to

automated driving. The needs of connectivity is inherently taken care in this transition. This change demands high levels of security over connected infrastructure so that the vehicles are not vulnerable to external threats and the data is well protected. When it comes to global trends in connected cars, does it differ from region to region? For example a vehicle sold in the US differ in its connected-car offerings as compared to a vehicle available in India? The trends in connected cars across the world are different primarily with respect to the stages of adoption, nature of usage and culture. Offerings usually depend on ecosystems specific to a market like communication network, traffic and parking management systems. The trend is more towards generic smartphone integration where the in-car unit depends only on the interaction with smartphone and not on the content. As an example, a head unit that supports Apple CarPlay can work with Apple iPhones across the world. Car Play certified devices by Bosch are already

offered in the Indian market. Although many customised applications are available for smartphone integrated head units in India, services like realtime traffic information, weather information etc. are not as mature here at the moment as it is in the US or Europe, but we see fast changing trends. Lastly, can you map your role in the Indian Connected Car market? Do give us a brief on your local development skills and progress w.r.t. R&D and engineering? RBEI as an R&D centre for Bosch works on all the latest technologies related to connected cars for local as well as global markets. We have an exclusive career path for the engineers to grow as technology leaders. Our technology experts are architecting some of the latest products and generating IPs. Our expertise in domains like Smartphone integration, HMI (Human Machine Interface), sensor technologies, video and graphics, Internet of Things and Big Data enables us to develop products for the exciting field of connectivity in automotive.
