EDITOR’S NOTE
T
he September 2014 issue has some very interesting drives, but the big ticket one is the Ciaz car from Maruti Suzuki. This Japanese company continues to be the Big Daddy in the automobile industry and like a true Modi, it has millions of supporters all over India! Ciaz is a car that will take on the much loved Honda City, a car that has proven itself to be a darling in the affordable sedan segment. It’s not going to be easy but from the looks of it, the Ciaz needs to be taken seriously by all its competitors. Drive reports in this issue also include the Hyundai Elite i20, the Mahindra Reva e2o, Fiat Punto, among others. We also had a day out with the Jags and the boys loved every moment of it, zipping through town in the adorable monsters, the F Type and the XKR-S. We have also driven the Honda City diesel car, primarily to tell our readers about the versatility of the IDTEC diesel mill from Honda. Now coming to testing cars and bikes and evaluating them, I have a confession to make. Auto journalists in India have always been at the mercy of car and two-wheeler manufacturers. We get invited to some very exciting locales, they fly us in and out and make us stay in some of the most luxurious hotels in the country and even give us a goodbye present worth several thousand rupees. Editors, Assistant Editors, Road Test Editors, Senior Correspondents, Correspondents and photographers, all of them enjoy this and never complain. We then come back and write wonderful reports on the vehicles and even if we need to criticise them, we refrain from that gently or smartly. Some magazines give 6 stars out 8 in their evaluation report and make it look as confusing as possible or put the gun on someone else’s shoulder and fire. We are bound by the wonderful hospitality and nobody writes what they ought to write! Thus when the Tata Motors Zest car stalled before my eyes during a test drive, I was in two minds whether to write about it or not. Being an old school journalist, I could not ignore this. I waited for the company to respond to my query. Several plastic parts under the bonnet had cracked on its own, a testimony to the bad component quality control that continues there. Tata Motors is a great company with some very wonderful and talented people working there, and it’s got loads of cash from its JLR kitty. But the company really has no single product in the car industry that can stand out in the crowd and claim to be India’s best. The Zest is a beautiful car, but I am not sure how solid it is! I hope Tata Motors goes through the report in a positive manner and does not deprive me of my next Tata car to drive!

ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE!!!
T
he Ice Bucket Challenge, sometimes called the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, is an activity involving dumping a bucket of ice water on someone’s head to promote awareness of the disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and encourage donations to research. NEWS
Tata Shocker! It was my turn to drive the Tata Zest diesel on a damp, rainy day in Goa. I had just finished driving the petrol version of the Zest and I was particularly happy with its overall fit and finish, performance and styling. Eight out of ten, I would give it, I thought to myself, for the car I had just finished driving. I see a friend from my fraternity approaching me from a distance. He is driving the Tata Zest diesel model. All of a sudden, barely 100 metres away, the car stops. I want him to come fast so that I can exchange the car and drive the diesel car, before heading to the airport to fly back home. Few minutes go by but there is no sign of the car starting. I walk up to him and he tells me that the car is refusing to budge. The car has a diesel engine mated to an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). I shift the car to the ‘Drive’ mode. The front instrument panel displays the sign ‘1’ signifying that it’s in first gear. I press the accelerator but the car still refuses to move... I try the manual way and push the gear lever to the first position. Again the front instrument panel displays the sign ‘1’ but still no movement. It’s then I take a look at what under the bonnet. I am shocked. The entire plastic that has the air filter bolted on to the engine has snapped from its moorings. The air filter, the air intake and outlet connections are out of their sockets. How can the plastic snap? Is it not supposed to last the entire life of the car? More importantly, why did the car stall? The car took almost three years of hard work to come off the assembly lines. How is it that the quality has not been maintained or ensured in the Zest? For a company that is blessed with loads of cash from the JLR stable and an excellent team of engineers and designers, should this not shame them? The Zest is fresh in every sense. It has raised an internal bar for design and performance for Tata Motors. But what about quality?

NEWS TATA MOTORS REPLIES: This refers to the problem noticed on the Diesel AMT vehicle in Goa during the drive evaluations. After the problem was reported our teams investigated the cause of the problem and the findings are as follows. The air filter is fitted on top of the engine on this vehicle. The air-filter mountings were seen to be broken at the mounting points. Our checks identified a lapse in the tightening of these mountings which rendered it loose and prone to damage. The part itself is from the FIAT part library and regularly used across millions of engines for the past many years. Secondly, there was a problem reported of notengaging of the forward drive on the AMT. This was checked with a diagnostic tool in Goa itself, and identified to a software maturity issue which caused the unit to go into limp mode in the engaged position (reverse) Our teams have worked on the calibration and improved the gear lever position detection and learning whereby this software lacuna has been overcome. The car was made driveable within a very short period of time, which points to there being no mechanical failure requiring any repairs. And with the update on the software maturity as explained above, any aberrant driveability issues have also been addressed. We thank you for your patience and continued support for the Zest and Tata Motors and look forward to a report that reflects your overall positive drive experience on the Zest at Goa.

ADM, US company partner for armour plating of vehicles
B
ullet proofing and armour plating vehicles in India are slowly getting popular, especially among politicians, businessmen and other high profile people. ADM Technologies, a business consulting and advisory service company in India has formed a business-alliance with the International Armoring Corporation USA. The alliance company ADMA Specialty Vehicles India Private Limited would start bullet-proofing facility for vehicles in India. International Armoring Corporation USA is globally known for manufacturing reliable technologically-advanced armoured passenger vehicles in the world. The company specialises in the manufacture of customised armoured vehicles for government officials, head of state, business executives or individuals who perceive a threat. IAC uses patented, lightweight synthetic armour laminates (Armormax), moulded to fit

the vehicle rather than modifying the vehicle, thereby reducing added armour weight by 30-70pc. These laminates offer protection up to high-power rifle fire and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). IAC has made over 8,000 armoured vehicles for clients in over 60 countries, thereby making it the most experienced in the industry. ADMA will have all the top end features and equipment to manufacture premium and futuristic armoured vehicles in India, depending on one’s threat level. International Armoring Corporation follows the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) standards for test procedures to determine the level of protection required. In an email interaction with Motown India, Mark Burton, CEO - Director, IAC said that the terms of the partnership between the two company are not disclosed at this time but will be at a later stage of the partnership.
He said his company International Armoring Corporation has facilities in London (UK), Utah (USA), Manilla (Philippines), Nairobi (Kenya) and Johannesburg (South Africa). “Our business model is to give our clients the best protection available at the best value. We are the originators of the lightweight armoring packages trusted by CEOs, security companies, and over 40 Heads of State around the world. India is a developing market but our internal projections are that we can capture around 40-60 vehicles a year once established on a consistent basis. We have several clients around the world tell us once you ride in an armored car is it hard to go back to anything else He said this company focuses on the armouring of vehicles but applies its technology to other areas such as safe rooms, ballistic doors, vests, and security vehicles.
NEWS Ducati Scrambler comes alive on a romantic note
T
he Scrambler Ducati motorcycle will be officially presented on September 30, 2014 at the Intermot 2014 (the international motorcycle fair held in Cologne, Germany). It would subsequently arrive at the Ducati stores all over the world early 2015. But before that, a peek into the history of the Scrambler. In 1962 Ducati produced the first Scrambler, designed specifically to respond to the needs of the American market. The Scrambler arrived in Italy a few years later, in 1968, and was an immediate success. At that time Ducati came up with the idea of using some of its own employees in the advertising campaign. What followed was an iconic shot showing the now-famous “Franco and Elvira” astride this classic Ducati bike. The handsome man at the time was working at Ducati as a test rider and she – easily as beautiful as any professional model – was working in administration. Now these two icons are the leading characters in a 3-episode web series made using stop-motion animation. The videos - the plasticine protagonists of which were hand-made by three talented nineteen-years-olds from Bologna - tell an imaginative story of how the Scrambler Ducati ended up in the present day. The story goes like this: Franco, a man from 2078, is catapulted by a time machine back to the Woodstock festival of August 1969 where he meets and falls in love with both Scrambler Ducati and Elvira. They joyously elope on the bike. But before the two can even kiss the time machine hurls them forward to the present day, to 2014. Franco and Elvira find themselves directly in front of the fabulous “yellow container”. Incidentally, this container was visited by Ducati employees and then the enthusiasts who flocked to World Ducati Week (WDW) 2014 from July 18 to 20, 2014. Coming back to the video, the two lovers exit astride the new Scrambler Ducati.

All-new Aston Martin Vanquish, Rapide S
A
ston Martin has revealed details of several important enhancements to two of the brand’s most popular and successful sports cars: the Vanquish ultimate GT and Rapide S four-door, four-seat, sports car. With the arrival of 15 Model Year (15MY) cars in markets around the world over the next few months, the car maker is offering not only enhanced performance and improved fuel economy and emissions, but also honed and responsive driving experience. Both the cars come with a new Touchtronic III eight-speed automatic gearbox – the first time that this state-of-the-art gearbox has been incorporated into a transaxle layout. The company engineers worked with technical partner, ZF, to develop the eight-speed technology and integrate it perfectly into the latest generation of the iconic Aston Martin VH architecture. The 0 to 100kmph for both the Vanquish and Rapide S are reduced in 15MY cars with the Vanquish recording it in 3.8 seconds from the earlier 4.3 seconds and the Rapide S achieving it in 4.4 seconds as compared to around 5 seconds. This also confirms Vanquish as the quickest accelerating series production Aston Martin in the company’s 101-year history. Gear ratios have also changed. Combined
16 I September 2014
with a revised final drive, the ratio changes also mean both cars are, for the first time, now capable of top speeds of 322kmph or above. The power too has risen by three bhp to a peak of 568bhp in Vanquish, and two bhp, 552 bhp in Rapide S. Peak torque is up by 10 Nm, too, to 630Nm at 5,500rpm in all the cars. The new eight-speed Touchtronic III automatic gearbox is not only three per cent lighter than its predecessor, it is also packaged
more efficiently occupying precisely the same space within the car yet adding two further ratios over the outgoing transmission. Touchtronic III delivers exceptional shift speed and moves between ratios as quick as 130 milliseconds – far quicker than even the most accomplished racing driver is capable of – while better gearbox efficiency allows more power and torque to be transmitted to the road more of the time.

hen it comes to the world of sedans, Maruti Suzuki gets a stage fright just before a launch. Old memories begun to haunt it and the country’s No. 1 leader in automobiles begins to sweat. The Kizashi was a beautiful car that just did not find takers in India. The Baleno just could not manage a respectable share in the sedan segment, despite its several good features. The SX4 is a big sedan that really should have done better. The Esteem has only left behind fond memories. Now with the Ciaz, Maruti Suzuki has redrawn its mid-size sedan segment strategy. The car will be taking on some hot shots like Honda City, Hyundai Verna and the likes. And mind you, by the look and feel of it, it can in all probability become the leader in the pack! Maruti will be launching its new mid-size car, the Ciaz by the middle of October 2014. While it will be a Diwali splash for the company, it could well be the perfect Diwali gift for the people. The car will be offered in both petrol (K14VVT engine 1372cc) as well as diesel (DDis 200 engine 1248cc) versions. Pricing is expected to
be in the range of Sub 7 lakh to Sub 12 lakh. The car comes with a host of great features as well as great fuel average. The car will come in four trim levels each in petrol and diesel: V, V+, Z and Z+. The car will be offered in seven colours including new ones like ‘Sangria Red’, ‘Dignity Brown’ and ‘Pearl Snow’. The petrol car will be available in both 5-speed manual transmission as well as 4 speed Automatic Transmission. The diesel car will be available only in 5 speed manual transmission. The Ciaz will be the longest and widest saloon in its segment with a length of 4490mm and a width of 1730mm. The car will have a height of 1485mm with a wheelbase of 2650mm. It will have a ground clearance of 170mm and a boot space of 510 litres. SO does that make the Ciaz the real Caar? Yes, if you were to compare it with the Nissan Sunny which has a length of 4425mm, a width of 1695mm, a height of 1505mm and a wheelbase of 2600mm. Lengthwise, the Ciaz is longer than the City, the Hyundai Verna, the Ford Fiesta and even the

Volkswagen Vento. With regards to fuel efficiency, it will offer 20.73 kmpl for the petrol version and 26.21kmpl for the diesel version, again the segment best. The petrol car engine will deliver a power of 91.18bhp @6000rpm while the diesel will generate as much as 88.76bhp @ 4000 rpm. Torque for the petrol and diesel variants would be around 130Nm@4000rpm and 200Nm@1750rpm respectively. The car now comes with a host of smart features like SmartPlay in car infotainment system, auto day/night IRVM, projector headlamps, glass integrated antenna, reverse parking sensors, reverse parking camera, electric trunk lid opening and intelligent key (push start/stop). The premium black and beige interior theme, with luxurious wooden garnish looks elegant and upmarket. The car has loads of cubby holes and smart storage spaces such as sunglass holder, illuminated front console box, etc. The central armrest in the front seats has a neatly concealed console box. To make things more
comfortable for rear passengers, the car also comes with rear AC vents, rear accessory socket, rear sunshade, rear centre armrest with cup holders and twin personal reading lamps. To add to all this are auto AC, foot well lamps and plush leather upholstery. On the move, the car has quiet cabin space, thanks to the adequate use of noise dampeners at the right places. What I liked about the car when I drove the car on a rainy day in Jaipur was the fact that it is really spacious, sporty to drive and even has feel-rich interiors. Not many would know, CIAZ stands for Comfortable, Intelligent, Attitude and Zing. I simply think the car has great pizzazz. Even though the car comes in four variants, even the base variants have the rear AC vents (A first in the segment) and a ditto looking front console with all it chic sliding covers. Wood garnishing on the dashboard remain in the base model too. The front stylish grill also remains same for all the variants. Except for things like air bags, alloy wheels and a bit of aluminium here and there, the

smart features of the car are fairly distributed among all the four variants. While driving at high speeds on a rugged track off the national highway, I noticed the car’s suspension was perfectly tuned to provide the right comfort as also a sporty experience. Though between the petrol and the diesel, my preference would be for the diesel with its extremely torque centric performance. With the Ciaz, Maruti Suzuki has definitely raised the bar, not just for the mid-size segment as a whole, but also for itself too. The team at Maruti Suzuki has been able to put together the finer elements of performance, design, styling, comfort and performance in perfect sync. It’s bound to change the way Indians feel about a mid-size car. To begin with, they will be a lot happier!

are the same as the previous generation. Fuel economy for the petrol is 18.60Kmpl while for the diesel it is 22.54Kmpl, as per the ARAI norms. The petrol engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission while the diesel engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Like I said this is part 2 of the fluidic expression. Always remember, if there is a part 2, then obviously part 1 must have been a neat hit. Or else there would never have been a part 2….. It’s as simple as that. If the earlier i20 was bold and beautiful, this one’s bold, beautiful and sporty---Both on the outside as well as in the inside. One look at the 2 tone 16 inch diamond cut alloy wheels and the black C-pillar and you know what I am talking about. It not only gives a premium look but also a sporty one. Before I write any further, let me also tell my readers I drove the top-end Asta variant in both petrol and diesel versions. Multi-function steering wheels are a boon these days because it lets you handle your radio and music with a mere twiddling of your fingers. The car’s got an integrated 2 DinMP3 audio with USB and Aux-in and 1GB internal memory. Other features include climate control, AC vents in the rear and the glove box. For the heroes of the world, there is also a sunglass holder and a centre console mounted card holder, which I feel is a complete waste in India. Abroad, where parking tickets come in the shape of a card (like the one you get at the T3 airport in New Delhi), this tiny slot or slit has its plus point. Features like Bluetooth connectivity, automatic door mirrors, dual airbags, ABS, impact sensing door unlock, parking assistance rear
view camera, automatic headlamps and smart pedal are all part of the offerings in this elite hatch. A lot of offerings in the Asta variant do not come in the other variants like Era, Magna and Sportz as a standard option. When it comes to space and driving comfort, this one tops the list among the hatches. Yes, some may say it lacks brute power, but then if that’s what you are looking at, then buy a car and don’t weep when you don’t get the right mileage. I especially liked the diesel version because of the splendid amount of torque the engine delivered. Not only 219Nm was ready for you to enjoy, but you got it with the least amount of struggle. As for the petrol, it was a breeze to drive. Decent pick up, smooth gear changes, good steering grip, a perfect suspension, all of these attributes come easy in the new Elite i20. Except for the Era model, all the other models of the Elite i20 have the rear AC vents. I personally feel rear AC vents need to be standard in every variant. One can do without safety air bags, ABS, parking assist, fog lamps, headlamp escort function, turn indicators on ORVMs, chrome touches, tilt and telescopic steering, rear wiper and washer, etc, but when it comes to a decent drive, please do not deprive the guys at the back of some direct cool air. Make rear aircon vents standard even in an Era variant, and you will have a greater fan following. Trust me, for millions of Indians keen to buy a smart hatch, it’s a dreary slog for them in real life so please offer then some comfort that they truly desire. A point to be noted Mr B S Seo, Sir! Do that for the junta and you are bound to win their hearts, even more!

verybody has been going crazy about the environment and blaming the car industry for causing the most amount of damage to our Mother Earth. A few brave car manufacturers in India are actually trying to fix the problem. One of them is Mahindra Reva Electric Vehicles which has now a new premium version of the e2o. The exciting features of the premium e2o include an Infotainment System, Driver Information System, Reverse Parking Camera and Assist. The premium variant also offers upgrades on the interiors and has kind of stylish exteriors. The new e2o is small like its existing variant but it’s a good looking car from the Mahindra stable and it’s very practical too. Well… sort of. It’s just too expensive to be what it’s trying to be---an eco friendly, family car. For that you have to blame the government…Acche din kab ayenge?

WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
I’ll get to that bit later. Right now let’s talk about the car itself. The e2o has an electric motor that gives out 25bhp of power and 59.3Nm of torque. What’s new with the Premium e2o? Well for starters it can go for longer—up to 120 km which means you can cover a lot of distance in a single day doing a lot of things, from dropping off your kid to school, buying your groceries, rushing off to your work place and coming back in time to charge it up for another exciting day. And all this with a clear conscience--No polluting! The premium e2o now comes with an electric power steering. Being light, small and having a tiny wheel base, it’s so much fun to drive. It is my personal preference because I love a small hatchback where you don’t need to be driving at high speeds to have fun. You can have the same kind of fun in the e2o at 40kmph as you would at 260kmph in a supercharged Jag. In the latter you end up going over a dozen sleeping Indians on the pavement, but with the e2o, it’s controlled driving.
36 I September 2014
WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
The electric power steering is a bit of a handful though because for starters, the steering itself is a bit too large for the car and isn’t really placed dead in the centre of your driving position and is a bit towards your right which is why after some time you will have a sore right elbow after repeatedly hitting the door handle. And also if you want to have a bit of fun and take a speedy U-turn, it doesn’t come back properly. Mr Mahindra, please look into that. But what’s also good about the little car is the delivery of the 25 horses. For example, when you’re at a red traffic light and you have big powerful SUVs and sedans next to you revving up their engine, I assure you with all that power they have, it is no match for the e2o. You will be victorious of the first 10 metres that actually counts on city roads so you will never really feel belittled even in this tiny little car! What is also nice in the e2o is the air conditioning which is really affective, which will keep the 4 people (two adults and two kids combination is the best!) seated
inside comfortable and cool. The new touch screen entertainment system works perfectly. Now coming back to the practical problem and the government angle related to the e2o. The e2o is far from the perfect path to the future, that’s for sure. But this perfect path can only be perfect if the government steps in and actually starts implementing its electric mobility dream. A lot of electric vehicle dealers have shut shop and so have manufacturers due to lack of demand which has led to massive job losses. Hero (pioneers in electric 2-wheelers) and Mahindras survive because of the sheer size of the company and its other ventures in the automotive sector. Unless the Government lends a helping hand through subsidies and other policy initiatives, electric vehicles can never find favour among the ordinary in India. On its part, Mahindra Reva has also introduced an easy and simple ownership scheme called Goodbye Fuel, Hello Electric for its e2o. As a part of the programme, in Delhi for example, the premium
variant will be available at 5.72 lakh on road with a monthly energy fee of 2,999 which will allow the customer to drive 50,000 KMs for a period of five years. So, what are you waiting for? Go buy your electric dream!

icetta Italiana, means an Italian recipe. A few years ago Fiat India had launched the Punto in India which was a rather nice car. But the Italian recipe did not go very well with the Indians. It was a good car but an India-friendly ingredient went missing perhaps. Now Fiat India decided to bake a fresh batch of the Punto and behold the new Punto Evo is here. You lay your eyes on it and you can sense an Italian classic styling that takes your breath away. Not a single thing on the car deserves a can do better stamp on it. Everything is just styled beautifully. Well, of course they are Italians and it has to look beautiful and only then will it get the pass. The head lamps now have an eyebrow going both sides making the Punto Evo look more aggressive than ever. The tail lamps are newly

designed in Italian fashion, shiny and bright. Unless the bread is baked and risen perfectly, it will not be served as it won’t taste or feel as it should, no matter how much cheese you add onto it. The 4 cylinder diesel powered churner churns 90Bhp and the flavour hits you with 209Nm of torque. As soon as you put a slice in your mouth, you don’t realise how good it

really is, you have to wait just a little bit for the turbo to kick in the surge of flavour of the 90bhp which will leave you wanting more already. The only downside in the Punto Evo is the drive unfortunately. The seating position isn’t very comfortable, the clutch pedal is too high and the steering rake adjustment doesn’t help much. The steering is on the heavy side to
WHEELZ & ROADZ A driving experience
give a sporty feel but it just feels a bit too over cooked. What is also unfortunate, if you have big feet, your left foot will scrape the steering column when you use the clutch. It’s like a lot of paprika and chilli flakes over the Punto pizza making it a bit too spicy. The design and the interiors of the new Punto Evo definitely have an Italian flavour to it. The swooping lines along the top of the dash, which is also backlit gives a very elegant look to it. The piano black finish on the centre console adds more bling to the interiors, the steering is big and chunky and the dials are also designed
quite well with the hovering shed panel on top. The rear seat have adjustable headrests and loads of legroom along with a rear aircon vent which helps keep the cabin cool for the rear passengers with the automatic climate control. In terms of safety, the New Punto Evo has dual front airbags, engine immobiliser, ABS and EBD. The other cool thing about the Punto Evo is that it sits on large 16 inch wheels which add even more to the sportiness to the car. So we now have the cheese, the meat of 90 horses some spices and a beautifully baked hand tossed bread base so it’s like the perfect recipe
for an Italian dinner. Unless Fiat gets it recipe right for India, it will never be able to satisfy the Indian palates. It’s not that their cars are bad, Fiat designs some of the sexiest cars in the world from their big Fiat stable. The Punto Evo is a great car to look at, it’s got a sporty stance, but with loads of turbo lag, it hits your appetite. It’s not fair to a car so beautiful! The irony is that the Fiat 1.3 litre Multijet engine is bought and used by so many car makers. If they can make their horses behave smartly why cannot Fiat with its diesel powertrain?

A day with the Jags JAGUAR F-TYPE V8S
CIVILISED MONSTER Report: Rahul Kapoor, Photography: Mohd. Nasir
42 I September 2014
A day with the Jags
T
o tell you the truth, the F-Type has been around for some time in India but when Jaguar asked us if we wanted to have another go at it, we simply jumped to it and said ‘Yes’. How would you not, for something that looks this gorgeous and made with care and finesse? At first glance you can see that the designers had a tough time to gain inspiration to get it right, especially when they were following up something as gorgeous as the E-type. You’re expected to deliver the same level to achieve the status the predecessor achieved. Enzo Ferrari said the E-Type was the most beautiful car ever made. So Ian Callum (Director of Design, Jaguar Cars) had his work cut out. He had to make something as gorgeous and make them relevant to the modern world while meeting all the safety regulations and restrictions that weren’t present when Malcom Sayer was designing the E-type. But what Callum and his designers came up with was absolutely breath taking. The styling included the signature Jaguar grille in the front reminiscent of the E-Type and the D-Type, with perfectly crafted air scoops beside them to cool those giant disc brakes, the perfectly shaped head lamps. The rear of the car is highly nostalgic to someone who knows their “Jags”, especially the way the back flows into the undercarriage of the car resembling the way Jaguar did it in the historic times, the thin strip of red LED tail lights carved similarly into the way it was on the predecessor, etc. All of these have been laid out in perfect proportions in reference to one another to form the successor to the most beautiful car ever made. But all of this we had predicted. We knew it would have similarities to the past cars that Jaguar made. We were already familiar with Callum’s work with the XK, the Aston Martin DB7 and DB9. What we didn’t get right was the insides. We expected it to be calm and composed, while giving a feeling of elation, peace and harmony. But what Jaguar has done is the exact opposite. The most powerful E-type had a 5.3litre V12 that produced 282Bhp. The engine in the F-type is a 5.0 litre supercharged V8 unleashing 543Bhp and 625Nm of torque mated to an 8 speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

A day with the Jags If you want to know what an uncivilised monster is, get in the car, turn the traction control off, put it into sport, then into manual to use the paddle shifters and just accelerate. You will get such a dramatic wheel spin when you floor it, the torque could possibly spin the earth out of orbit and when the tyres finally clamp down onto the tarmac, the surge of savage power slingshots you into the future…almost so! The noise from the V8 is so loud you don’t even need a horn; people across the globe can hear you coming. It’s not one of those irritating sounds but a loud monstrous sound that commands respect. Once you floor it and get to second gear you feel the G-forces just shoving you into the seats like the Devil himself has stomped on your entire body trying to hold you in place as you hit 0-100kmph in just 4.2 seconds. But when you turn everything back on and put it into eco mode, it’s a docile and civilised monster. But even in eco, normal or dynamic modes if you give it the beans, all

hell breaks loose, the throttle is like a play button for the soundtrack of the apocalypse which is there to mask your screams so that no one can hear you in that isolated cabin. When you take a moment to catch your breath and have a look around the interiors you notice everything is almost perfect. The bronze plating on the start button and the paddle shifters, the climate control knobs and switches, the drive functions, the display screen, the slightly complicated Sat-Nav are all brilliant. But some of the plastics sort of slightly and minutely remind me of a Tata product. For example, the cup holders are in the way of your arm so you will probably knock over your cup when you use the gear lever. So Tata has found a way to trickle into the F-type to remind you who’s the real boss. The lesson here is that, if you are an atheist and you don’t believe in all that religious mumbo-jumbo and are not afraid of the devil, then the F-type is the car for you. You begin to believe in the Creator.

he leader of the pack when it comes to Jaguars line-up is the XKR-S, which unfortunately is a dying breed, soon to be phased out. Jaguar placed one of its most powerful production engines yet in the XKR-S, a 5.0 Liter Supercharged V8 petrol engine which will get you from 0-100 kmph in 4.4 seconds flat. When I first laid eyes on this baby, she was shimmering blue in the afternoon sun. Just one thought crossed my mind, Papa Smurf! Carbon Fiber finishing, matt black alloys and ooh those projector headlamps which looked like the eyes of an Egyptian cat. Everything
about this car will simply make you drool like an overfriendly Labrador. By the way if you are thinking who Papa Smurf is, well he is a fictional character from the comic strip, the Smurfs. Papa is the third oldest Smurf and the leader of all Smurfs and he is very energetic in spite of his age. Now let’s get back to our Papa Smurf. Rolling her out of the showroom, I needed to be extra careful as this car is simply planted to the ground. With almost minimal ground clearance for enhanced aerodynamics there are so many roads you want to avoid in a city like Delhi. In traffic this is sheer eye candy, but
one cannot help but hit the pedal to the metal, so ogling is short lived. The automatic 6-speed transmission is very responsive to your mood and will not unleash its wrath on the road until you don’t demand the same from it. The rear wheels propel the vehicle to neck breaking speeds in the blink of an eye but a major worry for me was that even though traction control was switched on, the car had some major stability issues. The engine has a whooping 5000 cc capacity for petrol and dishes out 543.1hp of power peaking at 60006500rpm, while 680Nm of torque peaking at 2500-5500rpm will simply make you go ooh

la la. The suspension is rather soft, so smaller potholes were virtually non-existent for me, the adaptive dynamic suspension system did perform well but not up to the mark when it came to stability at higher speeds. The tyres are Pirelli P-Zero tubeless radials with 20 inch Vulcan alloys and will turn in a radius of 10.9 meters, pretty nifty for a car like this. Braking is facilitated by discs on all four wheels, which to me was very efficient. For people who can afford a car with this price tag, petrol costs and fuel efficiency would not be a worry. None the less to do justice to the common folk and make us feel better about our wee little cars, fuel efficiency in the

city is 5.3kmpl which goes up to 11.6kmpl on highways. The XKRS can reach a top speed of 300 kmph, to support such a high consumption rate the makers of this Jaguar have slapped on a 70.6 litre tank. The inside of the car has a typical exquisite luxury feel that any Jaguar would give off barring the Sparco styled race spec bucket seats. It has an automatic dual zone air conditioner, electronically adjustable front seats, the rear seats may look too cramped for adults but they in fact are not meant for seating, just a place to keep your shopping bags. The front row seats come with a heating function and lumbar support for a more comfy
drive. The car has some smart features like push button start/ stop, keyless entry, cruise control, parking sensors, voice control and an in built touch screen navigation and audio system which is also linked to the multi function steering wheel. For safety there are airbags in the front and sides and impact beams on the sides and the front. Jaguar is planning to phase out its R-S badge for their performance models like the XKR-S and the XFR-S and will replace it with the new SVR badge. The SVR badge signifies that these cars have been developed in their new Special Vehicle Operations plant. The SVR badge is expected to compete with other

The XKR-S in many ways carries the legacy of a classic and has been a symbol of power, agility and sheer English royalty since its inception. The fact that Jaguar would phase it out simply means that many would want to get their hands on it now more than ever, for that 100 special edition units of the XKR-S were produced. This is one car with un-paralleled excitement associated with it and will stand testament to the former glory of Jaguar through the eons of time.

HONDA CITY I-DTEC
CITY CHAMP I Report: Joshua David Luther, Photography: Mohd. Nasir t has only been a short while since Honda Cars India Ltd. launched the 4th generation Honda City in both petrol (i-VTEC) and diesel (i-DTEC) variants. The i-DTEC diesel engines are powered by Honda’s Earth Dreams Technology. Currently the Honda City, Amaze and Mobilio are powered by the i-DTEC engine. The heart of any car is the engine, winning the heart of a driver is not just how the car looks but also how the engine performs. In India performance may have a different definition from western countries. For the typical Indian family a car has good performance only if it has a good mileage and at the same time can go fast, both of which are two different engine tunings. Honda has just about got it right with their i-DTEC engine. The car does not only give a mind blowing 26 Km to the litre but also has
48 I September 2014
the capacity to out-perform many hatchbacks and sedans with the same engine capacity. The Honda City has a 1.5 litre i-DTEC engine which produces an astounding 99bhp @ 3600rpm and 200nm of torque @ 1750rpm. The fact that Honda Cars India Ltd. has sold 1,00,00 i-DTEC powered vehicles in India which have cumulatively clocked over 90 crore Kms just goes to prove that Honda has got their formula right. We drove the Honda City i-DTEC and boy was it a joy to get behind this wheel. The engine unlike most diesel mills is very responsive; it just does not feel sluggish. The 1.5 litre i-DTEC will pull cleanly from 1500rpm – 3900rpm after which it begins to tail off. For a car the size of the City one could demand a bigger engine but Honda is more sensible than us, a breed of babbling petrol-heads. The car is named City because it is made for the city.
For which the 1.5 litre diesel mill is perfect, there are only a few roads on which you can really tear up the asphalt, the rest of the while you will be busy honking in the never ending traffic snarls of a metropolitan like ours. For city driving the car is one of the best choices available in the market, it has everything you would want. If you want a bigger engine or feel the City is underpowered go and buy the Honda Highway! The i-DTEC engine has an all aluminum cylinder head which is joined to an open deck engine block. The open deck configuration of the i-DTEC has made it one of the lightest engines among those with a similar capacity and output. The i-DTEC has an exceptionally lighter crankshaft and uses some of the latest friction reducing technologies. The result is a highly efficient diesel motor which not only performs well but also has reduced carbon and

green house gas emissions. The whole Earth Dreams Technology has been conceptualised to develop such an engine which will perform well at the same time not compromise the environment. The Honda City is the first model in India to use Honda’s new and exciting H Design. The H Design will be applied to all of Honda’s global models. The H design has been conceptualised around a sleeker looking car with a low front face and symmetrical linings that run along the car to a raised rear end. The headlamps are designed to look sharper and house a total of four lamp slots. The front face of the car has a very edgy look with the Honda badge centered between the bold chrome wings. The sides of the car have a powerful design and have been shaped to look more aggressive and muscular discarding the old Honda styling of smoothness and straight lines. The rear end gets wider wrap around tail lamps fitting

perfectly with the overall design philosophy of the car. The Honda City has 175/ 65 R15 tyres and newly designed 15 inch alloys. The previous versions of the Honda City lacked a few features which major competitors like Hyundai and Nissan were offering. This has all been compensated for in the new version which covers a wide array of features. Some of the highlights of what is offered inside are one push engine start/ stop button, automatic air-conditioning with a touch screen panel, rear ac vents, rear parking camera with different view selections (wide, normal and top-down view), cruise control, paddle shifts (only in the top model), electrically retractable and adjustable ORVMs, LED turn indicators on the ORVMs, sunroof with a tilt function, sound insulation for the diesel variant, rear reading light, advanced integrated audio with a 5 inch screen and 8 speakers. The car has a host of safety features

such as driver and passenger SRS airbags, ABS, EBD, engine immobilizer, auto door locking and a rear windshield defogger. The new Honda City i-DTEC is a thriller of a sedan and just something that will keep you wanting more and more and more. Everything about this car is simply beautiful it has all the features and functions an Indian buyer would ask for. No wonder it’s a city champ!

n its very first participation in an off-road event of the toughest nature, Punebased Force Motors’ Team Gurkha bagged the first two positions. Truly the mother of all off-road events in the world, the Rain Forest Challenge India 2014, saw Force Motors participating for the first time with three of its souped up ‘4X4X4’ Force Gurkha vehicles. The event held in Goa from August 8 to 14, 2014, was the first edition of the internationally acclaimed Rain Forest Challenge (RFC). Gurkha No. 120 driven by Tan Eng Joo and navigator Tan Choon Hong claimed overall victory with 1877 points after six days of extremely tough action in the natural terrain around Goa. Gurkha No. 107 with Mervyn Wei Shiong at the helm and navigator Abdul Hamizan Hamid were edged out for the win by a solitary point and had to rest content with 1876 points for second overall. Both the winning Gurkha vehicles were neck to neck throughout the six day event which had a total of 23 cars coming under

starter’s orders. The third Gurkha vehicle No. 121 with Sanjiv Singh and navigator Jay Shridhar could only go on to bag 8th position overall. The three participating Force Gurkha vehicles for the RFC were specially modified to meet the demands of top notch off roading given that the Rain Forest Challenge is ranked among the world’s ten toughest motoring events. Powered by the Mercedes-Benz licensed power train of 2.2 FMTech Common Rail Direct Injection engine and the G-32/5 gearbox, front rigid axle, long travel heavy duty shock absorbers, hydraulic steering adapted from the Balwan agricultural tractors from the Force Motors stable, these vehicles managed the toughest terrains with great ease. In fact, every major driveline aggregate was from within the Force Motors portfolio and was put in place by the engineering prowess and proven reliability of the Force Motors R&D team. Prasan Firodia, Managing Director of Force Motors said that he was extremely delighted with the results. “This was a first of its kind event for Force Motors, we wanted to prove the off-roading capabilities of the Force Gurkha; we have not only achieved that but have also secured the top 2 positions. While a large part of this success goes to our drivers, it would not have been possible without the hard work and relentless efforts of all our team members. We are proud of the results achieved,” he said. The Rain Forest Challenge was first launched in Malaysia in 1997 and at present has a presence in seven countries including Italy, Russia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Tunisia, China and Australia. The winning Gurkha no. 120’s driver Tan said, “This is the perfect result for

MOTORSPORT me and my navigator Tan. I would like to thank the technical team for their support and backing throughout the extremely gruelling and tough special stages”. Second placed Gurkha no. 107’s lead driver Mervyn stated, “I am pleased with the result. I believe as a team we tried very hard and the results reflect that.” The event subjected the competitors to incessant rain, steep slippery slopes, deep ruts, gullies, flooded rivers, and landslides, all with interesting and unpredictable twists. The fourlevels of special stages were of increasing difficulty----Prologue, Predator, Terminator and Twilight. The participants had to tackle 30 Special Stages across a multitude of obstacles, to be declared as overall winners. Comprising of a driver and a co-driver, each team navigated through multiple off-road obstacles or Special Stages from South to North Goa. The first day of the event saw competitors line up their vehicles for scrutiny by an expert panel. The scrutiny was to check if all the vehicles complied with RFC International safety standards and was followed by a briefing for the teams. On the first day of the event, Luis J A Wee, Founder and Creator of the Rainforest Challenge said, “This is the maiden event in India and I am humbled to be in the midst of so many off-road enthusiasts. This event is my child. RFC going international was a milestone for us and now it coming to India is another one. I pray that the passion for this sport only grows and we see an even bigger crowd next year. For the love of off-roading, let the event begin!” The Prologue Special Stages was held around the International Centre Goa. After two days of tackling the 12 Prologue SS, the teams ventured into Jungle Camp I where they had to fend for themselves while adhering to the stringent guidelines of the environment charter that had been instituted by the event organisers. The 6 Predator SS tested the competitors’ driving and recovery skills in rugged terrain, before they made their way to Jungle Camp II. Here they used their skills to tackle the challenges in SS in the Terminator stage. The journey culminated in the Thriller in the Twilight Zone with an expedition through uncharted territory. The team with the least penalties and best overall time got an automatic entry in the RFC mother event to be held in Malaysia in November 2014.

MOTORSPORT TÊTE-À-TÊTE WITH PRASAN FIRODIA Managing Director, Force Motors Report: P. Tharyan What made you take a plunge in the Rain Forest Challenge in India, both sponsoring and taking part in it? First things first, it’s an international property and a very respected off road event and I don’t think the Gurkha would have had a better opportunity in terms of a launch and to bring this event to India where the off road community needs to get a feel of what real off-roading is all about. We will learn a lot as an organisation in further doing up our vehicle to the demands and the desires of what events like this require from a vehicle. Our vehicle is the only real off-roader in terms of differential locks in the front and rear, snorkel and also the Mercedes driveline. Coming to the Gurkha vehicles they have been souped up big time for the event. Who did this and how much time did you spend doing it up? We did all of these in less than six months. So when we were approached by the organisers we found out about the rain forest challenge. That’s when we spoke to Cougar Motorsport and decided to be a sponsor for the brand. The first few weeks were spent trying to understand the event amd how it happens. Nobody in India knew about RFC. We wanted to know whether by associating with RFC it would be beneficial for us in the long term. Once we had these basic questions cleared we said ‘Ok let’s go for it’. The Gurkha vehicles have been tweaked and refined further. This is something which every rally vehicle goes through. There is not a single rally vehicle in the world where you say ok, take it off the production line and go into the
56 I September 2014
Himalayan rally. You will fail. You will fail miserably. We tweaked it with the help of our R&D team. As an organisation it’s a first time, there is always a learning curve in everything you do. We also took the views of outsiders also. We took in a few people in our team to understand what people do in events like this. Then we got hold of a few experts and then together we built the vehicles. Do you feel that you have really raised the bar big time when it comes to making rally vehicles? I hope so. I am sure we have done something which probably people did not expect us to do. Having done this it’s also very demanding on us and very challenging for us to ensure that we don’t fail. That does not mean that we have to win the race. I would be equally ok even if we don’t win the race because it’s the first time for me. The fact that we have come here itself is a big achievement. The learning that my team has gained is incredible. I’m sure a lot of this learning will translate in the normal Gurkha also, in terms of what issues we will have on the axles and what issues we will have on the brakes. Yes, we have raised the bar. It’s going to be challenging as we have to ensure that we do not fail. And we will keep on investing in taking this forward. Coming back to your business, when will the Gurkha be launched across the country? As we announced in July this year, we will launch the Gurkha next month in September 2014. Therefore we thought of the RFC in August. If we win the RFC there will be nothing like it. We have in the meantime learned a
lot in terms of motorsports, which is completely a different ball game. The way you think of engineering on a regular basis you cannot think like that here. It’s completely different. The engineering team that worked on this, for them it was exciting because they were doing something which is very different. There was no bar on how wide you can go. A lot of team work was displayed in putting these vehicles together in two and a half months. Every department, right from purchasing to development to testing to prototyping, I think they loved it. For the other employees who were not a part of it, it would be a proud moment for them also? Absolutely, I am waiting to get these vehicles back into the factory and show them what the guys have done and made. Are you going to remain a niche player in the passenger vehicle segment in India? I have learnt a lot in the last two years. Getting into the personal vehicle segment is not easy and is very challenging. Indians want a change every six months. One needs to have big pockets and the ability to sustain losses. The good thing is though we have sold close to about 3000 SUVs we have learned a lot. We got to learn about new features, new technologies, new safety requirements – ABS, air suspension, electronics, Infotainment all of these are
features which are today not very predominant in CVs. Getting in to a segment like this helps you a lot. But whether I do this big scale, we will have to look at it carefully. But our existing business, be it the Traveller or the Trax, it’s doing extremely well. In the Traveler segment we are now clearly India’s largest van maker. The Traveler is doing extremely well. We have extended our Traveler platform and those segments are going phenomenally for us. Our Traxs segment continues to do well. Gurkha is again a niche product and the beauty of a vehicle like a Gurkha is that it’s an ageless product. People are going to respect it for its off roading capability so vehicles like this will survive a long time. You look at the Land Rover Defender. It hasn’t changed. Look at the G class Gelandewagen, the body remains the same for the last 40 years. For the Gurkha, there is no offering similar to this. This is huge potential in exports. For the last two months I have been exporting vehicles. Several countries in Africa have taken the Gurkha as an army vehicle. Several African game parks have taken our vehicle as an excursion vehicle. (The interview was conducted on the first day of the RFC 2014. Read the full interview on www.motownindia.com)
MOTORSPORT TÊTE-À-TÊTE WITH ASHISH GUPTA Founder & Director, Cougar Motorsport Report: P. Tharyan Did it take a long time for Cougar to put things in order for the RFS 2014 in India? We really did not have much time to prepare for this. We signed an agreement with the organisers of RFC only on February 4, 2014. We had barely six months to do it. We decided to jump into it and it’s been one crazy journey till now. The first thing was to decide where to host this event. Everything had to be looked into...monsoons, connectivity, terrain and we wanted the government to be supportive. We could have done it in a private estate like Lavasa or someplace like that. Finally we decided on Goa. The government and the bureaucrats here have been amazing. Had it been any other state, this would not have been possible. They had a clear set of do’s and don’ts. We had to strictly follow that. The Chief Minister’s office was extremely supportive. This is a sports tourism event and the state is so pro tourism. Monsoon is a lean period in Goa and they know if this builds up in the next two to three years, they stand to gain immensely. It also infuses a lot of dynamism among the youth of Goa. When I got the final approval for this event, someone remarked that we have finally got something to Goa which is nothing to do with music or a beach concert. This event would provide entertainment to people in the hinterland, because no event goes inside. In terms of monetary support, the moment I got into a franchise agreement I was prepared to underwrite that. But then Force Motors came forward and it was good for everyone and it was also brilliant for them to be part of this event. They leap frog the 18 years of Mahindra Great
Escape in one go. It’s as big as that. We also liked the idea of Force Motors becoming the title sponsor and participants too. For Mahindra, it would have been nothing new. It would be one more additional event in their calendar. The third challenge has been participation. We started by updating our list on our website on anybody and everybody who stocks 4X4 equipment. We also put up an exhaustive list of FAQs. Then we went around meeting off-roading clubs in India. I went to Bangalore and met the BODA guys over lunch. We met so many people, trying to address their concerns. As a result of all that we had 25 participants for the main event and around 34 for the touring adventurer category. The touring guys bring only stock 4X4 vehicles and participate in the first round and then watch the others in the extreme category. I am sure since this is the first time for the event, they would be motivated to participate in the Extreme category the next year around. People have driven from Hyderabad and Bangalore to participate in the touring adventure category. My dream is to convert this into an annual 4X4 convention. And on the sidelines of the convention we are doing the RFC. This is a great beginning in this direction. But RFC has definitely brought in a lot of awareness. People have seen videos and have gone on the net to study what they have done to their vehicles. I have seen radiators pushed to the back of the vehicle, vehicles with hydraulic steering, nobody has heard of a hydraulic steering in a 4X4 vehicle. Only when an event of this nature comes, will they grow up to it. If there is no
event why will they do this at all? Off road tyre prices have gone through the roof once it was announced that RFC is coming to India. Everyone wants to buy a Simex or a Silverstone or a Maxxis Trepador off road tyre. Winch stocks have run out in the country. There are no 8274 winches available with Warn company in the US. These come from the US and suddenly so many orders coming from India is huge for them. Look at the impact of this on the economy. Especially for those building a vehicle and you can imagine how many people will come up to them and tell them they want a car like that. Everybody has winches but no one uses a winch dampener blanket. That is a penalty and now everybody has bought it. When a cable breaks, there is a whip lash and if you are standing next to it, it can kill you. This dampener act like a weight and in case of cable break, it simple falls down and wraps around this dampener avoiding any serious injuries to anyone around. This blanket is put on the cable before you begin using it. Also we will not allow them to touch the winch cable without a glove. We are also insisting on four-point harnesses for their seats. We insist on roll cages. People do
off-roading in soft top vehicles. How close is rallying to offroading when it comes to rules and regulations? Rallying has always been a top notch level in India. It is regulated by the FIA, the FMSCI, etc and we have almost the same safety standards as international ones. Off-roading has not been regulated by FMCI. In India off roading is more of a fun event where you go in a soft top vehicle and simply manoeuvre the uneven terrains. RFC is now taking the safety levels in off roading to a new level, unheard of or unseen in India. A rally vehicle is built to go fast. An off-road vehicle does not go fast, that is why it is higher, has more articulation, heavier tyres, and has a completely different application. The safety regulations in a rally are much higher because of the speed element. In off roading the worst that can happen to you is you roll over, hence you need to have a roll cage, helmets and safety belts. In a rally vehicle there is no winch. Nobody in India has followed the best practices of winching. (The interview was conducted on the first day of the RFC 2014. Read the full interview on www.motownindia.com)

aniel Ricciardo of Red Bull racingRenault won an exciting race at the 2014 Formula 1 Shell Belgian Grand Prix legendary 7.004 kilometre SpaFrancorchamps circuit. This was the 12th round 12 of the season and took place over 44 laps. Though it was Nic Rosberg’s (Mercedes AMG Petronas) fourth successive pole and his seventh of the season, he finished second in the race while his team mate Lewis Hamilton had to retire at Lap 39 after he was told to pit at the end of the lap to cool the car. It was a problem with aero degradation said the team. Zero points for Hamilton at Spa. But what was a matter of concern was the manner in which Rosberg bumped into the his teammate Lewis Hamilton’s car in the first lap of the race. The former’s front left wing tagged Hamilton’s left rear tyre. Hamilton had to limp back to the pit with his tyre shredded. It was a bad beginning for
Hamilton. Around Lap 28 Hamilton was heard saying “I don’t know how I’m going to catch the guys in front. I have no downforce. ” Mercedes simply told him to get his head down and keep plugging away. Ricciardo meanwhile got his third win of the year. Valtteri Bottas of Williams-Mercedes came in third position and his Finnish counterpart from Ferrari Kimi Raikkonen came in fourth. Sebastian Vettel, former world champion had to be content with fifth position while Kevin Magnussen of McLarenMercedes beat his teammate Jenson Button across the line. Fernando Alonso of Ferrari, Sergio Perez of Force India-Mercedes and Daniil Kvyat of STRRenault completed the top ten. Three-time Le Mans winner Andre Lotterer who made his F1 debut with Caterham where he had been drafted earlier in the weekend to replace Kamui Kobayashi, saw an early exit.
Torger Christian “Toto” Wolff and Paddy Lowe, Executive Directors of Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One Team met up with race drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton a couple of days after the race in the boardroom of Mercedes AMG Petronas headquarters in Brackley to discuss the events of the Belgian Grand Prix. According to a Daimler press note, during this meeting, Nico acknowledged his responsibility for the contact that occurred on lap two of the Belgian Grand Prix and apologised for this error of judgement. Suitable disciplinary measures have been taken for the incident, the statement read. The statement further read the “Mercedes-Benz remains committed to hard, fair racing because this is the right way to win world championships. It is good for the team, for the fans and for Formula One. Lewis and Nico understand and accept the team’s number one rule: there must be no contact between the team’s cars on track. It has been made clear that another such incident will not be tolerated. But Nico and Lewis are our drivers and we believe in them. They remain free to race for the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship.”
Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton got off to a great start at the Belgian Formula 1 race. Rosberg apparently bumped into his teammate’s car in the first lap of the race. The former’s front left wing tagged Hamilton’s left rear tyre. Hamilton had to limp back to the pit with his tyre shredded.

ormula One racing team Scuderia Torro Rosso has announced that Max Verstappen, son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen will race for the team in 2015 replacing Jean Eric Vergne to drive alongside the Russian Daniil Kvyat. At the age of 17 this Dutch teenager will become the youngest ever driver in Formula 1 history. He has made a smooth transition from FIA Formula 3 European Championship where he won 8 out of 27 races to date making him a title contender. In 2013 Verstappen also won the Karting World Championship. Verstappen said that driving in Formula 1 has been his career goal since he was seven years old and this opportunity is a dream come true for him. Franz Tost, Team Principal of Scuderia Torro Rosso said his team was happy to welcome Max into the Toro Rosso family. He stated that It is great to see how the Red Bull Junior Programme continues to find talented young drivers and gives them the opportunity to come into Formula 1. Tost also said that they consider Max to be as one of the most skilled young drivers of the new generation and they believe he has the necessary maturity and mental strength to take on the challenge of Formula 1 successfully. With Verstappen’s coming it also means that Jean Eric Vergne is currently left without an F1 seat for 2015. The Frenchman joined Torro Rosso in 2011 and missed out on the promotion to Redbull Racing to Daniel Ricciardo last year. He has also been overshadowed by his current rookie team mate Kvyat. Tost thanked Vergne for his contributions to the team over four years. He also stated that jean Eric Vergne has produced strong performances, but unfortunately was also hindered by some reliability issues, in the first half of the 2014 season. Tost hopes that to resolve these problems and that Vergne will be able to end the second half of this season on a high note to prove that he still deserves another opportunity in the sport.
Mahindras finish pre-season test for Formula E battle
W
ith the inaugural race of the FIA Formula E Championship all set to take place in Beijing in September 2014, the Mahindra Racing Formula E team completed one final pre-season test recently. Mahindra Racing is one of the ten teams – and the only Indian team – to compete in the inaugural FIA Formula E Championship. Mahindra race drivers Karun Chandhok and Bruno Senna completed several test programmes and two separate race simulations as their familiarisation with the new Formula E car comes to an end. The two will next take to the track for the first race of the season on September 13, 2014 at a specially built street circuit in Beijing, China. Following pre-testing briefings with their engineers, both Chandhok and Senna went through complex test plans, as the Formula E cars completed their final miles on track before being shipped to Beijing. Both Mahindra Racing men were inside the top ten during the first general morning session which took place on a dry track in chilly conditions at the Donington circuit in the UK. After the first general test session of the day the drivers were split into two groups, to complete two separate race simulations. Senna was up first, taking to the track in his first car to complete a full run before heading into the pits to practice a live car change. The Brazilian was back out on track a minute later to complete a run in his second car, said a press note from Mahindra Racing. Once Senna was back in the garage to debrief with his engineers, his partner Chandhok went through the drill. As part of the full car pit stop, each driver must spend at least one minute in the garage. Chandhok also made the change to his second car.

C
omponent manufacturing opportunities in the Indian Aerospace and Defence sectors are expected to open a new window of hope and challenges for the Indian auto components industry in the next few years as the latter gets ready to tap these segments for business growth. With this objective in mind, the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA) organised the first Aerospace and Defence Summit in the Capital to understand and address the opportunities and challenges in the sectors. The auto components industry has recommended that among the policy initiatives that needed to taken by the government, the government has to define a comprehensive road map for the Aerospace and Defence sector, in absence of which the Indian Defence manufacturing sector is not able to cater to India’s current requirements and is thus forced to look outside to meet the requirements. It also noted that the existing version of Defence production policy is very generic and does not lay down a clear roadmap on how private sector participation will be harnessed to build India’s indigenous capability. The policy document needs to be revised with more specific action points such as the Technology Perspective & Capability Roadmap (TPCR) document which could be made more specific to help the industry plan their long term investments in the sector effectively. This would also help in aligning the R&D initiatives of the OEMs towards the actual need of the Defence forces and will provide clarity to the component manufacturers in planning their capacity and capability
72 I September 2014
Senior Government and ACMA officials at the Aerospace & Defence Summit in New Delhi The component manufacturers also called for immediate steps to be taken to create a focused action plan for upgrading the skill sets in the MSMEs. India is expected to emerge as the world’s third largest aviation market by 2020 and perhaps the largest by 2030. There is also a significant push from the Government of India on the Aerospace majors to establish their R&D, manufacturing, maintenance, warehousing and training facilities in India. Due to multiple economic and geopolitical reasons the Global Aerospace and Defence industry is witnessing a gradual shift to Asian economies. Additionally, with the recent announcement of the Union Budget, the Government has allowed 49pc FDI in Defence sector. This would present immense opportunities for the components industry
to contribute towards a nascent yet promising sector through local manufacturing, felt several speakers at the summit. . C K Vishwakarma, Executive Director, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) who was Guest of Honour at the summit commented that the Indian auto component industry is now keen to diversify into Aerospace, Defence and Railways. Stressing on the challenges with respect to the Aerospace component manufacturing, he said it needs to be addressed by setting up a strict quality control system, machining of aluminium alloy, high strength steel, super alloy etc. “Since the time of its inception
the component industry has matured manifolds in terms of technology, skill building and capability and hence they should directly approach the Indian Defence Industry for business”, he noted. Ajay Shankar, Member Secretary, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) and the Chief Guest for the occasion, said
COVER REPORT focusing on the Aerospace and Defence sector. “With more than 100 participants and the number of speakers representing the OEMs, it is indicative of the fact that there exists a significant opportunity for the component manufacturers to diversify and cater to the requirements of the
Defence and Aerospace industry,” he said. “We as an industry are keenly following the developments of this sector and see potential opportunities for partnering. With the latest provisions such as raising the cap on FDI in Defence, we feel that the stage to harness opportunities in the Aerospace and Defence space is being set. ACMA believes that in the next 10 years the country is going to see an explosive growth in this sector and clearly indigenous manufacturing is going to benefit from it” Lakshman added. Vivek Lall, President-Chairman’s office, Reliance Industries Ltd. spoke about six areas which are important for the automotive component manufacturers such as quality assurance, cross learning from Aerospace and vice-versa, adjustments to low volumes, skill base required in Aerospace, introspection of raw material supply in India and investment and incubation timelines, especially since Aerospace is a high investment sector. With respect to India he mentioned three key areas
which can be worked upon to push automotive to Aerospace. First there is Additive Manufacturing (AM) which will be the future in next 10 years, second is the composites or structural fibres, these being the sunrise sectors which India can work upon; and the last being plastic electronics i.e flexible, bendable and stretchable electronics. Pranav Kapuria, Chairman, Aerospace Defence and Railways (ADR) Committee ACMA said, “As per market estimates, between 2012 – 2032 more than 30pc of the global commercial aircraft orders will be by airline
operators from Asia Pacific countries. India is expected to emerge as the world’s third largest aviation market by 2020 and perhaps the largest by 2030. There is a significant push from the Government of India on the Aerospace majors to establish their R&D, manufacturing, maintenance, warehousing and training facilities in India”. Moreover he pointed out that while on one hand western economies are witnessing a gradual decrease in military spending, on the other emerging economies such as China, India, Brazil and Middle East regions are witnessing an increase in their Defence spending due to volatile security environment.

that “today we have a window of opportunity for the automotive component manufacturers who are looking to get into the Aerospace and Defence. Understanding the capabilities of the automotive component manufacturers it would be just a transitional shift for them who are equipped to undertake the Aerospace and Defence sector’s requirements”. Harish Lakshman, President of ACMA said that this was for the first time ACMA had organised a summit

Hero Cycles acquires equity stake in Germany’s MIFA cycle company
O
PM Global B.V., a subsidiary of Hero Cycles Ltd, the world’s largest cycle manufacturer by volume, has acquired a significant equity stake in Germany’s largest manufacturer of cycles Mitteldeutsche Fahrradwerke AG (MIFA) for 15 million Euros (approximately 119.5 crore). MIFA manufactures a comprehensive range of bicycle models from normal cycles to electric ones at its single integrated manufacturing plant in Sangerhausen in Germany. MIFA is listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and its annual sales figures are in excess of a 100 million Euros ( 7,981 million or 798.1 crore). MIFA had earlier invested large amounts of borrowed capital (debt) in new technology to develop high-end cycles which is one of the primary reasons for its present condition. Hero Cycles began its journey from Ludhiana, Punjab and later partnered with Honda to become the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the country.
76 I September 2014
The Hero Cycles and MIFA deal comes at a time where debt repayment was becoming an issue for the German cycle manufacturer. Now they look to turn around the company in a span of 18 months. The Board of directors will soon be re-organised and in due course of time a plan will be devised to improve the present condition of MIFA with the help and participation of their new found Indian leadership. The German company had a few years back acquired Berlin-based Grace, an e-bike manufacturer, and Bavaria-based high-end bicycle forging company Steppenwolf. This acquisition will give Hero Cycles access to the critical Electronic Drive Unit (EDU) technology, used in e-bikes. The company will be spending an additional 4 million Euros ( 31.8 crore) as capital expenses in restructuring the acquired company. According to a formal announcement made by Mifa, it noted that OPM Global B.V had entered into a general commitment,
as part of an investment agreement to underwrite capital increases in cash in the amount of Euro 15 million from MIFA’s existing authorised capital and thus invest up to EUR 15 million of equity into MIFA. “The cash capital increases shall comprise a 10pc capital increase with subscription rights being excluded and a subsequent rights issue with a total number of 4.9 million new shares to be issued. OPM Global B.V. has undertaken to subscribe all such shares which together with additional existing shares to be transferred from certain existing shareholders would result in an overall participation of the investor of up to 47pc”, the note read. In a separate note posted on August 22, 2014 on the Mifa website, Hans-Peter Barth, CEO of MIFA said, “The considerable strengthening of MIFA’s equity base also sends an important signal to our employees and business partners. With HERO, we have gained a strategic investor that believes in MIFA’s future, and is also prepared to make a major
financial investment in ensuring that our company returns to full health. We are optimistic that, with HERO’s investment, not only have we placed an important building block for our financial reorganisation, but we have also found a valuable partner for the future structuring of our operating business.” Dr. Stefan Weniger, Chief Recovery Officer (CRO) at MIFA, regards the basic agreement as a decisive step towards the company’s further restoration to financial health: “Following intensive and constructive negotiations, the agreement that has been reached today sends more than a positive signal for all involved. In particular, the reorganisation structure that has now been agreed shows how determined the negotiating partners have been to find a solution which is compatible for all sides, and which forms the basis for MIFA’s long-term future. We have now found such a solution. Thus, the reorganisation of MIFA has reached the home straight.”

Delphi’s scanning radar promotes safety in cars
D
elphi Automotive Plc recently sold its one millionth electronically scanning radar (ESR) globally. That is a key milestone as car makers meet growing customer demand for new technologies with emphasis on improved safety. Delphi’s ESR made its debut in 2009 and it set the standard for long range automotive radar sensors. Key features introduced in this radar included multi-mode operation, digital beam forming, and a STAR-Pulse Doppler waveform that resulted in a new level of proficiency. Even with the industry adopting these features, ESR remains a topperforming sensor in the industry with sales to eight global automakers, says a Delphi press note. At 76GHz, Delphi’s ESR provides substantial range that is competitive with most similar radar systems on the market. This
milestone for long range forward looking radar adds to the millions of Advanced Driver Assistance System radars Delphi has delivered to date. The Delphi press note further adds that its portfolio of radar and vision systems provides layers of protection that intelligently monitor and scan the vehicle’s internal and external environment. ESR makes it possible to precisely detect objects in two coverage areas with one radar unit. Delphi’s newest generation of ESRs can scan 200-meters forward for long-range and 60-meters (196 feet) for short-range with a field of view of20 degrees and 90 degrees respectively. They can also enable a complete suite of collision avoidance and driver convenience features like Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) for vehicles, pedestrians and animals, as well as Adaptive Cruise Control
(ACC). “Passive safety technology, such as seat belts and airbags, has significantly helped reduce vehicle fatalities but, despite this, the U.S. still records about six million accidents per year,” said Beth Schwarting, vice president, Delphi Electronic Controls. “The goal is to prevent an accident before it happens and that’s where ESR and many of Delphi’s other advanced driver assistance systems can help,” she added. Active safety technologies sales have increased in the U.S. and Europe as demand for them has intensified due to consumer acceptance, government regulations and insurance incentives. The automotive industry is now seeing active safety reach a tipping point. In the last decade, advanced driver assistance systems have evolved. The next generation of
vehicles will benefit from forward-looking radar and vision sensing systems. In the near future, these technologies will expand to include advanced levels of automated driving capabilities. Delphi’s sensing technologies monitor the surrounding environment and, in conjunction with workload management, help determine how and when infotainment content can be delivered to the
driver. These same sensors can then off-load driver functions through driver assistance features like adaptive cruise control and lane keeping when they are needed. “We believe enhanced safety is achieved when the vehicle is able to automatically take action in critical situations when the driver does not,” said Schwarting. “This is a first critical step on the path to automated driving,” she added.
Innovative transmission unit from Continental
T
he popularity of dual clutch transmissions is increasing by the day. These transmission offer drivers several benefits in terms of fuel efficiency, smooth gearshifts and vehicle performance. Drivers love the blend of sporty driving pleasure and fully automated gearshifts. This is accompanied by a drop in fuel consumption compared to manual gearboxes of as much
as five percent. Dual clutch transmissions are considered one of the most significant innovations in the transmission sector. Leading international automotive supplier, Continental has been developing and supplying control units for (step-) automatic and dual clutch transmissions for the last several years and the company ranks among the pioneers of this technology. The control unit for the new generation of the
Audi 7 speed S tronic dual clutch transmission brings up a further milestone. Rudolf Stark, Head of the Transmission Business Unit within Continental’s Powertrain Division said the company faced several challenges in this new control unit. These included packing far more functionalities into less space while at the same time ensuring that the control unit supports the outstanding fuel efficiency of this transmission, the
dynamic performance it enables, and its fast shifting. ‘Another key requirement is the functional safety of the transmission control unit, which in this particular case is implemented to ASIL-D specifications for the first time worldwide,” says Stark. “To make that possible, we have employed
a new architecture and new technologies. We are proud of the fact that Audi has entrusted us with this responsible task and involved us closely in the development phase,” he added. Series production will begin in the next few months.

Henkel’s adhesive bonding gains popularity in automobiles
A
utomobile manufacturers are increasingly adopting adhesive bonding as a mainstream technique, especially for body-inwhite (BIW). BIW refers to the stage in automotive design or automobile manufacturing in which a vehicle body’s sheet metal components have been welded together — but before moving parts have been added and before the vehicle has been painted. Adhesive bonding is all new technique to assemble vehicles, says Shilip Kumar, Business Director – Automotive & Metals, India Middle East & Africa (IMEA), Henkel Adhesive Technologies India Pvt. Ltd. Kumar says that the industry has effortlessly welcomed adhesive bonding as a mainstream technique, especially for BIW. Mumbai-headquarted Henkel Adhesive Technologies India Private Limited is a subsidiary of Henkel AG & Co. KGaA, Germany. In India, Henkel is the market leader in adhesives, sealants and surface treatments for consumers, craftsmen and industrial applications. Henkel solutions are used in diverse segments ranging from manufacturing, electronics, automotive, aerospace to biomedical industries. Some of the well known brands of Henkel in India include Loctite, Teroson, Bonderite, Technomelt & Aquence. “In a car assembly, the escalating usage

The
time between assembly and bake, when the structural adhesives are cured in the paint ovens, can be weeks, allowing batch manufacture and manufacture at alternative locations without risk of assembly distortion. This can be particularly useful for the assembly of closures with increasingly dense electrical and electronic content, where assembly by a supplier can provide manufacturing and capital savings. Adhesives also help to release packaging space and allow optimised geometries because there is no requirement for access by a welding gun. Kumar says that the industry has adopted the adhesive technology but has not completely shifted. It is possible only if the manufacturing of the vehicle consists of different body technology, like carbon, composites or possibly aluminium. Initially, adhesives are used as a supplement to spot welds or bolt as an incremental modification and mostly for minute specific challenges. There are definitely wide ranges of benefit from the adhesive. For example, as soon as the vehicle has reached its maximum use limits, the heat around the spot welds can develop small cracks that lead to increased flexing of the body. The present scenario in the car industry is to deliver a premium experience and these costly cracks and rattle warranty
claims. These fears restrain a manufacturer from offering long-term warranties, which is a natural expectation of the consumers. “Using adhesive can reduce the assembly cost too. The barrier components, complaint foams used at critical trim interfaces to reduce the squeal and rattle can also be eliminated in some vehicles. Let’s look at another crucial advantage of using an adhesive joining in comparison to conventional techniques. The exhausted welds are not safe and there are many layers to the safety concerns. Point fixing such as spot-welding creates localised stress points, but adhesive bonding spreads the loads, not only making the joint stronger but
also allowing more of the material to contribute to energy absorption. Some new, lightweight structures would not be possible without adhesives to improve crash worthiness. And unlike welds, an adhesive bond maintains the majority of its strength throughout the vehicle’s life,” he adds. When the adhesive bonding is used in assembly then there are chances that the weight issues may get solved easily. There is high stress at the spot welds points. Now if the stress is spread across a wider area, there is a room to use the thinner gauge materials. The escalated stiffness, blended with the superior durability of the joint allows to eliminate a few reinforcing components.
The industry is witnessing growing use of the hybrid structure with dissimilar materials such as composites, aluminium and carbon or steel and aluminium needs to be joined. Such components cannot be held together by welding, thus leaving the option of using physical fastenings which are expensive to apply and they also create localiised stresses, or simply bond them. Even lower cost cars now use a considerable multitude of steel specifications, many of

TECHNOLOGY
which are difficult to weld or difficult to weld to steel with significantly different specifications. On the other hand, adhesives are material independent and promote the technology for complex light-weight, hybrid and durable vehicle. Applications are growing
in every region as vehicle manufacturers come under increasing pressure to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The 2020 requirements can only accelerate this trend, driving sophisticated materials into higher volume segments.
Electric in-wheel hub motor ZAwheel from Ziehl-Abegg
T
he electric motor manufacturer Ziehl-Abegg will be presenting the second generation of the electric in-wheel hub motor ZAwheel at the IAA Commercial Vehicles that will take place on 8 days from September 25 to October 02, 2014 in Hanover, Germany. The gearless electric drive for city buses was launched at the last IAA Commercial Vehicles in 2012. Since then, several firms like VDL Bus & Coach, Hybricon and ebus Europe opted for a co-operation with Ziehl-Abegg. According to a press note, numerous orders in different countries have been placed or are firmly planned. Ralf Arnold, Managing Director of Ziehl-Abegg Automotive noted that his company’s system is the most efficient drive for city buses. German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel personally had the ZAwheel described to her at the Hanover Fair by company owner Uwe Ziehl and also Ralf Arnold. The second generation of the ZAwheel will have more power and will be presented technically at the IAA Commercial Vehicles. The torque has increased from 2,100Nm to 2,700Nm while the rated power has risen from 99 kW to 113 kW per wheel. The optimised drive axle in low-floor version simplifies the conversion of diesel vehicles. A monitoring system allows the line operator to look virtually into the motor of every wheel on-line accurately to the second. Charging cycles can be optimised and possible critical operating points detected early in this way, the press note said.
