SWIM LESSON STANDARDS Fun For All Ages
STAFF/ PARTICIPANT RATIOS
The following ratios are implemented for our YMCA Swim Lessons: Parent/Child Classes 1:12 Preschool Classes 1:5 Polliwogs & Guppies 1:6 Minnows 1:6 Fish 1:10 Adult Instructional Classes 1:12
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
We encourage parents to take time after class to talk positively about your child’s experience. Practice during family or open swim time helps to reinforce skills learned during lessons. Parents are asked to view swim lessons from the pool deck. This promotes the child’s independence and will allow them to focus on the task at hand. We value your feedback. Course evaluations are available on the pool deck on the last day of class. We appreciate your time and input!
PARENT INFORMATION
Helpful Tips: DO NOT feed your child for at least 30 minutes prior to their swim lesson. This will help prevent cramping and sickness during lessons. •

Goggles are not a requirement unless they are at the level of stroke work and swimming at distances further than 10 feet at a time. If your child is more comfortable with goggles in the water we recommend goggles without the nose piece to ensure your child will learn appropriate breathing techniques. Hair should be pulled back and away from the face. Wet suits and rash guards can be beneficial for children that tend to get cold. We keep our pool heated to 82 degrees year-round.
Parent-Child Classes are now a FREE Member Benefit!
BENEFITS OF SWIM LESSONS Safety is our highest priority. The goal of this program is to develop each person spiritually, mentally and physically. Children will grow in each of these areas as they progress through the swimming program. The main focus for swim lessons at the YMCA is learning rather than passing or failing. Each level includes five components: personal safety, stroke development, personal growth, water games, and rescue awareness. We help children build self-confidence as they become more independent in the water and learn new and exciting skills. The program also helps participants develop leadership skills. Instruction is delivered in a student-centered, caring atmosphere by well-trained instructors who give students personalized attention. Lessons are developmentally appropriate and designed to quickly and effectively teach swimming skills.

SPECIAL NEEDS/ INCLUSION Y camp is for everyone! The Joe and Mary Mottino Family YMCA tries to accommodate all campers into our programs. Accommodations for your child will depend on availability, what camps are best suited for your child, your child’s needs and the Y’s resources. Due to high demand and our commitment to serving as many campers as possible the number of weeks for one-on-one assistance per camper are limited. An inclusion intake form must be filled out and submitted to the camp department prior to registration. Evaluation of registration materials takes up to two weeks to process. Inclusion intake forms can be found on our website or at the Service Center. Our inclusion program is made possible by generous donations to our Annual Support Campaign.
If the minimum number of campers is not met, the camp will be cancelled by the Tuesday prior to the camp’s start date. Each camp attendee will be notified immediately and given the option to transfer to another available camp or receive a voucher or refund.
17
CAMP PAYMENTS The YMCA requires that each camp be paid in full by the Monday prior to the first day of camp. If the camp is not paid in full by that day, your reservation will be cancelled and you will forfeit your $25 deposit.

TRADITIONAL TRAVEL CAMPS
A TIME TO TRAVEL
Let’s go on an Adventure! Our NEW Traditional Travel Camps are an exciting way for your child to experience summer! Campers will grow by participating in new activities, games and crafts, and they’ll have the opportunity to visit the best spots in San Diego County. Our Adventurers will travel twice per week and Explorers will travel three times per week. Each week we explore the theme through activities, crafts and our highlighted field trip of the week. They will also travel to local parks, Oceanside beaches, nature centers, and many more. On non-travel days campers will splash and play in our pools here at the Y. Discover all the fun your child will have this summer at our Traditional Travel Camps!
