As a Catholic university, Mount St. Mary’s graduates ethical leaders who are inspired by a passion for learning and lead lives of significance in service to God and others.

The best version of yourself isn’t someone you’ll bump into one day on your way to class. The truth is, your best self has always been a part of you. We don’t expect you to become someone new, but to strengthen the person you already are. Around here, we discover what’s in our minds and in our hearts so we can create careers and lives that matter. We learn voraciously. We compete ferociously. We serve selflessly. We turn possibility into reality. Because from the minute we arrive and for every moment that follows, we live significantly.

Our core curriculum, based on the Catholic intellectual tradition and rooted in the liberal arts, is where we start – and just wait until you see where it can take you. In your courses, you’ll discuss your thoughts and beliefs with your peers, which will sometimes lead to challenging yet eye-opening debates. And no matter what you study, you’ll make connections by applying what you’re learning to your major coursework – whether that’s through exploring ethics in scientific research, contemplating corporate social responsibility in business, or practicing compassion and patience in a fifth grade classroom.

honors PROGRAM

competitive FELLOWSHIPS

A unique experience that integrates curricular, co-curricular and extra curricular learning in both interdisciplinary study and the student’s major. Students take a series of courses featuring close faculty-student interaction in small class settings. The honors sequence culminates in an intensive research project in the student’s major and a presentation at the SPARC Festival during senior year.

The Office of Competitive Fellowships helps students who are ready to take their academic success to the next level with the application process for highly competitive and distinguished fellowships and scholarship awards, such as the Fulbright, Marshall, Rhodes, Goldwater and Gates Cambridge Scholarship.

i LEAD

sparc FESTIVAL

The Institute for Leadership Ethics, Achievement and Development (iLEAD) offers a leadership certification program and hosts the MSMU chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success.

The Scholarship, Performance, Art, Research and Creativity (SPARC) Festival is a campus-wide celebration of the academic achievements of our community. Modeled after an academic conference, students share their work during poster sessions, lightning talks, honors project presentations, performances and more.

GET OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE AND YOUR TIME ZONE Whether it is for an entire semester, for the summer or even just for a short “intensive” trip abroad, traveling out of the country gives you a new perspective on the people and cultures of the world around you. You’ll learn something new about how you fit into the big picture. The Whole World Will Want to get to Know You Share your life and culture with a host family in a total immersion program, designed to integrate you into local life by challenging you to speak only the local language while living with native speakers. After being on campus for a few years, you’ll be ready to see the world for a few months. “INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS” isn’t

an exaggeration

Thanks to a partnership with the Shandong Institute of Business and Technology, you’ll be able to actually build relationships with Chinese students who will be learning right along with you – digitally and in person.

Say you’re taking a class called Business and Culture in China, in which you explore U.S.-China relations.

Our short-term exchange programs utilize the Mount’s international partnerships to give students studying

the business and culture of China, India and Russia the opportunity to watch their learning come to life by visiting the country’s historic locations, collaborating with international business leaders, eating like locals and experiencing the lesson plan firsthand.

ACADEMICS

If that’s what you choose to study at the Mount, your learning experience will truly be a global one with class excursions to Yantai, China; Mumbai, India; and Chelyabinsk, Russia.

mount students achieve FELLOWSHIP SUCCESS The Mount celebrated extraordinary academic achievements in the spring of 2020. Guided by dedicated faculty in the Office of Competitive Fellowships, three Mount students were awarded a 2020-21 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the preeminent undergraduate award for students intending to pursue research careers in the fields of natural science, mathematics and engineering. The three awards represent the most ever received in a single year at the Mount and surpass combined awards over the past 15 years. These experiences enrich students’ learning and broaden cultural experiences.

She graduated from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in May 2017 and began her seven-year residency in the summer of 2017. “The Mount definitely played a huge role in how far I have come,” says Abu-Bonsrah. “It is a true privilege and honor to join the department [at Johns Hopkins] and to be trained by such excellent surgeons.” Current residents in the Johns Hopkins neurosurgery program are from undergraduate institutions such as Harvard, Yale, NYU, Columbia and Stanford, however, the institution has never had an African-American female trained in neurosurgery in 124 years. Originally from Ghana, Abu-Bonsrah is on track to become the first physician in her family.
