Partnership Opportunities The First Mixed Terrain Bike Race in the Iconic Big Basin Redwoods State Park
Big Basin Redwoods State Park was established in 1902 and is California’s oldest State Park. It is home to the largest continuous stand of old growth redwoods south of San Francisco. And for the first time, a mixed terrain bike race is coming to this iconic place. Mountain Bikers of Santa Cruz (MBOSC) and Ibis Cycles are proud to present the first mixed terrain bike race to be held in Big Basin Redwoods State Park. The Big Basin Old Growth Classic is an exciting race and full weekend experience that is being hosted as a benefit for State Parks. A significant portion of the proceeds from the Old Growth Classic will go directly to State Parks. A 55-mile route will take 350 riders on a mix of paved and dirt roads that wind through towering redwoods with views of the Pacific. The Old Growth Classic is a full weekend festival, with camping included Friday and Saturday nights, music, great food, and more! Between the great riding, group camping, and first-time racing in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, this event will be legendary.

Benefit for State Parks
Incredible Race Route
The only thing better than racing bikes and having fun is racing bikes and having fun for a good cause. The Old Growth Classic is held as a benefit for State Parks, and a significant portion of the proceeds from the event will go directly to State Parks. Riders will get a chance to truly appreciate the beauty and importance of our State Parks as they ride through both Big Basin Redwoods and Butano State Parks. State Parks is an important parter of MBOSC, and we are grateful that they have been so supportive of this event.
We’ve been asked if this is a race or a ride—and it’s both! The event will feature 350 racers in a professionally timed race with podium awards, but many people will participate to experience a supported ride in Big Basin. The course is a challenging 55-miles with 8,000’ elevation gain taking riders on a mix of paved and dirt roads through Big Basin’s iconic scenery, with wellstocked aid stations along the way. The route will feature many of Big Basin’s classic roads, such as China Grade, Chalks Road, Gazos Creek, and Middle Ridge.
Full Weekend Festival
Camping Amongst the Redwoods
Race entry includes a full weekend experience complete with camping, food, beverages, and more. Participants arrive Friday afternoon to setup camp. That evening is spent relaxing by the bonfire before sleeping amongst the redwoods. After a tasty breakfast Saturday morning, riders depart for the race! They’ll be welcomed back to camp with refreshments and delicious food. That evening will be a festive celebration with live music before crawling into tents satisfied with exhaustion from a fun-filled day. Participants depart Sunday after an unforgettable weekend.
We have exclusive use of Little Basin Campground for the weekend, and this will be home-base for our summer camp experience. Participants will get to camp amongst the redwoods, and the campground offers a lot of fun when people are off the bike, including tennis courts, sports fields, volleyball, horseshoes, and miles of hiking trails. Evenings can be spent around the group campfire ring or listening to live music in the outdoor amphitheater. The campground provides bathroom facilities with hot showers to keep everybody cozy and comfortable.
Live Music
Delicious Food & Beer Garden
Nothing keeps stoke levels high like live music! As riders return from their epic ride, they’ll be greeted by the ska-raggae-fusion band Take 1. Take 1 is a local Santa Cruz band, and as their bio states, their music “creates an atmosphere of positivity where people are free to enjoy the good vibes.” Headlining the festival is outlaw county band Miss Lonely Hearts. This Santa Cruz hard driving honky tonk band will surely get everybody dancing, even if their legs feel like jello after a challenging 55-mile race.
A bike race is not complete without satisfying meals and tasty libations! The race entry fee includes three meals on Saturday, drink tickets for Saturday’s postrace festival, and a farewell breakfast on Sunday. Food will be served by Angela Blessing Catering, a local Santa Cruz caterer who specializes in off-grid wilderness environments, bringing fabulous food to the great outdoors. New Bohemia Brewing Company will have great drinks on tap, including the Old Growth Classic IPA, which will be brewed just for the event!
Environmentally Minded
Community Atmosphere
Sustainability is a key focus of the MBOSC mission, and the Old Growth Classic will have a minimal environmental impact. A carpooling signup program will reduce the number of automobile trips, and waste will be minimized by requiring reusable cups for all beverages, as well as reusable plates and utensils for all meals. As bottled water will not be available, we will provide a water trailer to fill reusable bottles. We will also be promoting Little Basin’s “Crumb Clean” initiative to educate campers on the dangers and ramifications of exposing wildlife to human foods.
The Old Growth Classic is a laid-back, easygoing, and welcoming gathering in the forest. Participants will feel like they’re at a fun summer camp with a community of good friends whether they’ve known each other for years or are meeting for the first time. Meals will be enjoyed together in a large picnic area, dancing will take place in an outdoor amphitheater, and stories will be shared around the group bonfire ring. Everybody will leave the weekend with a new friends and a special appreciation for the wonder of Big Basin Redwoods State Park.
