MEC Tournament History

By Shawn Rine The Mountain East Conference has not been short on producing talent not just on the court, but on the sideline as well. On the men’s side, that’s led to six coaches beginning their first year this season.

Tyra James: Doing It All Points. Rebounds. Assists. Steals. You name it, and Tyra James has been doing it for the Urbana women’s basketball team. A graduate transfer, James took a circuitous route to Urbana. After being named All-Ohio during her senior season at Cincinnati’s Winton Woods High School. James opted to stay in-state and play at Kent State University, where she saw both her freshman and junior seasons derailed by injury. She then matriculated to Florida A&M for a season before returning to the Buckeye State to play for Coach Andrea McCloskey and the Blue Knights. It didn’t take long for James, who stands and even 6-foot tall, to make an impact at Urbana. She scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a season-opening game against Atlantic Regional foe West Chester, and that was just the beginning. James burst onto the scene to put her name squarely into the Mountain East Conference Player of the Year conversation. Heading into the final game of the regular season, she had recorded three triple-doubles and 16 double-doubles on her way to averaging 24.4 points and 10.8 rebounds a game. “It has been nice to have that player that can do it all or take over the game,” Coach McCloskey said. “But, sometimes we get in a bad habit of watching Tyra James and Sylvia Hudson. Our team success will always rely upon the supporting cast to continue to contribute and continue to do the things they can do. “Usually, the unselfishness of Tyra and Sylvia to make extra passes to set up open shots for others is what will get us going. It takes a team to win games. If it was that easy to win with just Tyra, we would be undefeated.” Indeed. But thanks in large part to James’ arrival, the Blue Knights are winning at a clip not often seen around campus. They’ve already racked up 17 victories compared to the last two seasons, when the program won a combined 16 times, including a 4-22 record a season ago. Now, Urbana heads to the big stage of the MEC Tournament at WesBanco Arena as one of a handful of teams who are thought to be capable of cutting down the nets Sunday as champions. “That is every coach’s dream and goal for their team,” McCloskey said. “Creating those memories for your team and to be able to share with them those experiences would be outstanding. “This conference is very tough and I know every coach is trying to accomplish the same thing that we are at Urbana. We are working hard to give ourselves a shot.” McCloskey said she was unsure what to expect once James got onto campus. She noted that when Division-I players transfer to Division-II schools, coaches can never be certain where the player will be from a mental standpoint. “I knew her skill was going to be a big impact, but you never know how a Division-I player’s attitude is truly going to be,” McCloskey said. “She bought in from Day 1. “The awesome thing about Tyra, is that she is a great teammate and her attitude along with her talent makes her a contender for player of the year.” Still, the question that remained was how teammates would take to someone coming in and taking their spot and minutes on the floor. Once again, McCloskey said, James shined. Not only did she fit in well, but from the beginning James was quick to share the glory with her teammates. “Our team adjusted well,” McCloskey said. “We just don’t have that pettiness or jealousy that you sometimes see in other programs. It also helps that Tyra never acts like she is more important than her teammates. They win as a team and they lose as a team.” McCloskey added that James has a natural ability to bring people together. “Tyra is a funny person and brings a sense of personality and humor to the team,” the coach said. “She includes everyone in the fun, no matter if they are freshmen all the way up to the seniors.

4

“Tyra also works on campus in the Admissions office.” On the court, James works wherever she wants. If the opponent decides to go small against her, James scores at will from in-close. But she is too quick and too good of a ball-handler to be guarded by a true post player. And “Tyra is extremely humble and brings a sense of maturity, both on and off the court,” McCloskey said. “She is more of a lead-by-example, veteran type of leader, than a vocal leader. “Tyra clearly has made an impact in the statistical categories, but she always gives her teammates the glory.” And it’s very possible that James and fellow seniors Sylvia Hudson and Weston Minnich, have made an impact that will be far-reaching. Potential recruits may now look at Urbana a little different than they once would have. “Tyra and the other seniors have done a great job of laying the foundation for what hard work and dedication will do to build a program,” McCloskey said. “Winning does help turn some eyes. “The record-breaking seasons that Tyra and Sylvia have both had, has led to some increased media exposure.”

Family tree with basketball roots To say it was some sort of destiny might be inching into hyperbolic territory. But once Will Ryan found his love for the game of basketball, it didn’t take long to realize that coaching was something he would one day like to explore. It would take only a curious glance at the Ryan family tree to quickly uncover how such a love and passion could have been and were instilled. And its no wonder then, that Ryan finds himself front and center as the architect of what can only be described as a remarkably quick turnaround of the Wheeling University men’s basketball program. “It is only natural that I followed in my dad’s footsteps as well as my late grandfather, William “Butch” Ryan Sr.,” Will Ryan said. “My grandpa was a youth coach near Philidephia for 40-plus years. “Then my father, William “Bo” Ryan Jr., was raised on a basketball court, football and baseball fields of Aston, Pa. It was probably only fitting that I, William Ryan III, followed in their footsteps and like my dad, grew up in gym with a ball in my hand and would grow up to be a coach.” If the name Bo Ryan sounds familiar, it should. He authored a hall of fame career as head coach of the University of Wisconsin, while first making stops at Division-III University of Wisconsin-Platteville, as well as UW-Milwaukee before landing with the Badgers. Bo Ryan finished his career with an overall record of 747-233, including a berth in the 2015 national title game, and was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2017. “Growing up in the gym with my dad, there is no question it has had a profound impact on my career path,” Will said. “Like most young basketball players, I thought I was going to play for Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski) at Duke and then have a long NBA career. “Once reality set in, my goal was to make the most out of my athletic ability in college and I was able to win two National Championships playing for my dad at D-III University of Wisconsin-Platteville. From there he took the job at UW-Milwaukee where I transferred and redshirted for a second time. The following year my dad took the job at Wisconsin and I finished out my senior year at UW-Milwaukee as a walk-on for Bruce Pearl. “Although playing college basketball didn’t turn out the way I had envisioned, I gained a wealth of knowledge on the do’s and dont’s of running my own program based on my experiences. “From those experiences, that solidified my passion for coaching and helping make an impact on future student-athletes.” Upon graduation, Will Ryan had already been infected with the coaching bug. By that point, it was just a matter of where he was going to get his foot in the door. He didn’t have to look far. Ryan joined his father’s staff in 2002 as a volunteer assistant, spending five years there before eventually becoming an assistant at North Dakota State. From there, Ryan moved to Ohio University where he spent another five years, wherein the Bobcats went 81-77, reached the Mid-American Conference semifinals twice and advanced to the 2016 College Basketball Invitational (CBI). All that movement, Ryan admits, can be tough on a young family. He and his wife, Emily, have three sons -- Owen, Liam and Callen. “My wife and I started dating when I was playing basketball at UW-Milwaukee and my dad was the head coach at Wisconsin, so she got an early glimpse of what the coaching profession life entailed,” Ryan said. “Growing up and even to this day, my mom, Kelly (in the words of Kevin Durrant), is the real MVP. And now in our household my wife carries the same title. “As far as my three boys, I am so thankful that my job and our athletic department is so family friendly that my children are able to experience growing up in the gym like I was.” When the Wheeling University job somewhat unexpectedly came open this summer, Will decided it was time to take on the added experience of running his own program. It wasn’t going to be easy, however, as these were trying times financially for the school. In part because of those off-the-court issues, Ryan, who was hired later in the recruiting cycle than one would like, had his hands full from the get-go.

6

“I think adversity would be just a little bit of an understatement. It came at us in every direction possible,” Ryan said. “I refuse to make excuses and don’t want a pity party, but we had to overcome some major obstacles early on not only as a program, but as an institution. We weren’t even sure if our school’s doors would be open for the school year. “Upon receiving the job, I reached out to a handful of guys I was told would be great to have return. Some stayed while others chose to pursue other options. I received word from five returners and then went about casting a wide net to round out a roster. “After the first few weeks we were worried we might not have enough guys to actually have a competitive practice since it was so late in the summer. Let’s face it, most kids know where they’re attending school well before late July, early August. We lucked out and got a few quality pieces that you could say probably slipped through the cracks. “The entire recruiting process was expedited. We didn’t see anyone play live. Every kid was evaluated off of film and/or was given the thumbs up to us by his AAU, high school, prep or junior college coach. These guys were simply just hungry for a chance. Some have really made the most of their opportunity. We all went into this somewhat blindly, but the guys quickly believed in the vision, one another and ultimately Wheeling University.” Most remarkably, heading into the final game of the Mountain East Conference regular season -- a matchup with neighboring rival West Liberty, no less -- the Cardinals were sitting in fifth place in the league with a 14-10 overall mark, including 11-10 in conference. “I’m extremely proud of our guys for quickly buying into what we’re trying to teach every day. After getting the job so late in the summer we had to scramble to put together a roster in about six weeks,” Ryan said. “We were fortunate enough to get some very good late, available kids.

2020 Mountain east conference Basketball Tournament “Adding them to a returning roster of five players that consisted of only a couple with significant minutes from the previous season, was a challenging process. We had a late wave of kids who committed so we actually ended up with 21 players. “We got to work right away trying to figure out who was ready and able to play. Those who truly understand how to compete and are good listeners/quick learners rose to the top pretty quickly. Teaching and developing every day on the court and in the film room has really aided in setting the foundation for success. We are limited in certain areas, but our guys don’t make excuses for that. They play extremely hard and that’s all we can ask.” And now, because of that quick turnaround, the Cardinals are playing on the big stage at the MEC Tournament inside WesBanco Arena. Players like Emmanuel Ansong, Jarrett Haines, Jordan Reid, Jay Gentry and John Korte, just to name a few, have made for a winning combination. “I am forever grateful that the returners chose to stay and gut it out. I know how difficult it can be from experience, as I played for three coaches as well during my college career,” Ryan said. “My main (on-court) goal for the season was to finish in the top half of the league and have a winning record and qualify for the MEC Tournament. We also wanted to make sure it was a positive atmosphere for our student-athletes based upon the hurdles we faced in the fall. “Academically, my program’s goal is to nurture and develop young men to achieve their dreams of playing college basketball while getting a great education at Wheeling University. “We were picked dead last in the preseason MEC poll, so immediately qualifying for the postseason tournament not only makes our current athletes believe in what we are doing, but hopefully it can open some eyes for prospective student-athletes/recruits and program supporters.”

2020 Mountain east conference Basketball Tournament

New Faces & New Places In becoming one of the top Division-II men’s basketball conferences in the country, the Mountain East Conference has featured some of the best talent one can find. The rivalries have been fierce, and the stories abundant. But perhaps one of the more overlooked and underappreciated aspects of the development and growth of the MEC men’s game, is the consistency that has been prevalent in the coaching ranks. The men -- guys like Jim Crutchfield, Jerrod Calhoun and Danny Sancomb among others -- carved their names into the history books of this conference, while at the same time helping their schools and by extension the MEC, become known on the national stage. But each of those coaches has moved on. And they’re not the only ones. While the MEC has been known for its consistency in that area, the times they are a changing.

DANIEL MONDRAGON, DAVIS & ELKINS: The former head coach and director of player development for the DME Sports Academy, the growth has been a bit harder to come by for the Senators. But with a new gym floor and excitement around the program, things are on the rise. JOSH GIBSON, URBANA: It’s been somewhat of a revolving door at Urbana, but judging from previous stops one could argue the school has found the man to turn things around on a consistent basis. Last season, Gibson led NAIA Lourdes University (Ohio) to an 18-12 mark after going just 7-22 two seasons prior.

Now, West Virginia State’s Bryan Poore (21st season) and Charleston’s Dwaine Osborne (seventh season) are the only bosses in the league who have been in their current positions for more than five seasons. Maybe not so coincidentally, each of their clubs finished near the top of the conference standings during the regular season. Building a program doesn’t happen overnight. And some, of course, have stepped into better situations than others. But with all that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the new faces. TIM KOENIG, FAIRMONT STATE: This one might deserve an asterisk, because although this is his first season roaming the Fairmont sideline, Koenig is no stranger to the MEC. In fact, he spent the last six seasons at Notre Dame College, including last year when he was named coach of the year and led the school to a conference tournament championship and NCAA Tournament bid. WILL RYAN, WHEELING: The sailing hasn’t exactly been smooth but the wins seem to now be blowing in favor of Wheeling, which welcomed Ryan -- its second coach in as many seasons -- late in the game. But he brings a pedigree to the Cardinals bench and has them in the tournament right off the bat. NICK PATELLA, W.VA. WESLEYAN: Like Koenig, he’s a familiar face in a new place. Patella comes over after spending four seasons at Davis & Elkins and has kept the Bobcats right around the middle of the pack in the conference for most of the season. Patella already has a road upset of league champion West Liberty under his belt.

And that’s just the guys who are in their first years at schools. Todd May (fourth year, Concord), Ben Howlett (third year, West Liberty), Justin Caldwell (second year, Glenville State) and Sean Brown (second year, Frostburg State) are all still relative newcomers to the scene. Some of the more familiar names have left. But everyone should remember that at one time those were also the fresh faces. MEC men’s basketball appears as though it’s in good hands with new, exciting coaches almost across the board.

MARK RICHMOND, NOTRE DAME: When Koenig left, so did consensus All-American Will Vorhees, as well as several other key contributors off that MEC title-winning club. The Falcons, under the direction of the former Youngstown State director of basketball operations, have had some ups and downs, but it’s probably not going to be long before they are back in contention.

Commissioner REid Amos Reid Amos brings an extensive background in administration and athletics to go with a sincere passion for the NCAA Division II experience as the Mountain East Conference commissioner. Amos, the unanimous choice by the MEC Board of Directors in November 2012 to serve as commissioner, has helped direct the league to extreme heights in just a short amount of time with the MEC having earned a reputation as a regional and national power. In virtually each of the 23 sports sponsored by the MEC, teams have reached new heights since associating with the conference. Since the conference began competing in 2013, 15 teams have reached the national semifinals and eight have played for a national championship. The MEC has also produced three of NCAA Division II championships with Wheeling’s title in volleyball in 2015 and the University of Charleston’s championships in men’s soccer in 2017 and 2019 -- the first ever team NCAA championships for any school in any sport. Amos has also expanded the number of championships offered during his seven years. The MEC began with 17 championships in its first year, and then expanded to add women’s lacrosse and then used a strategic partnership with the Great Midwest Athletic Conference to add a championship in men’s and women’s swimming. Last year, the MEC became the first NCAA conference in the country to conduct a championship in the sport of acrobatics and tumbling. This year, the league added championships in wrestling and indoor track and field, giving the league a total of 23 championships -- among the most of any Division II league in the country.

qualification and selection procedures for each. All Division II sport committees report directly to the Championships Committee. Prior to his Championships Committee appointment, was a member of the NCAA Division II Football Committee, including the last two as the chair. As chair, he helped oversee the bid process and site selection for the 2018 Division II Football Championship in McKinney, Texas. Amos is also an active member of the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) as chair of the public relations committee. In that capacity, he helped the D2CCA become the official sponsor of the NCAA Division II all-region teams. Amos has also helped lead efforts to help land NCAA championships in the MEC’s footprint. The league has co-hosted multiple softball and lacrosse championships, and served as the host for the 2019 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championship at The Resort at Glade Springs. Commissioner Amos has helped raise the visibility of the league and its institutions with the development of the MEC Digital Network and the creation of the the Mountain East Conference Football “Game of the Week,” which has drawn thousands of online viewers since its inception. He also forged a partnership with WV MetroNews to deliver high-definition video streams on the web and provide radio coverage for the football and basketball games across the

In addition to his daily duties, Commissioner Amos recently began a term on the NCAA Division II Championships Committee. The committee is the primary oversight group responsible for administering policies and procedures surrounding the division’s 25 championships. The committee oversees the budget and conduct of these championships, as well as the

2020 Mountain east conference Basketball Tournament He enjoyed a highly successful run as head men’s golf coach at Fairmont State University from 2003-07. A two-time WVIAC Coach of the Year and the 2007 NCAA Division II East Region Coach of the Year, Amos led the Falcons to a pair of WVIAC championships, five consecutive NCAA Division II regional tournament bids and the 2007 NCAA Division II East Region championship. His career coaching record at Fairmont State was a sparkling 450-215-7 (.677). From 2009-13, Amos served in NCAA governance as a member of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Committee that administers the NCAA Division II national championship tournament. As part of that role, Amos has served as Chair of the Atlantic/East Regional Committee and has been the NCAA’s site representative for the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional each year since 2009. Along with fellow national committee members, he served as a site representative for the NCAA Division II national championship tournament and was appointed Chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Golf National Committee for the 2012-13 season. Along with his work in broadcasting and athletics, Amos also brings extensive communications and marketing experience to the table. Since 2003, he has been the owner/operator of Intermedia Solutions, LLC, a multimedia consulting company working with many of the institutions he now serves in the MEC.

region. In addition to multiple network-wide regular season basketball broadcasts, WVMetroNews will provide live coverage for the fourth-straight year of the MEC Basketball Tournament, including 14 high-definition video webcasts. Prior to his role as commissioner, Amos was the Vice President of Broadcasting at West Liberty University. He was promoted to that role following a successful stint as the Executive Director for the WLU Office of Communications. During his time at West Liberty, Amos’s work was instrumental in the growth of West Liberty University Television (WLTV-14), which today reaches more than 100,000 cable homes in West Virginia and Ohio. Known throughout the Upper Ohio Valley as the “Voice of the Hilltoppers,” he served as play-by-play announcer for approximately 50 televised football and basketball games each year at West Liberty. Amos served as executive producer and play-by-play man on several WLTV telecasts that have aired on ROOT Sports, the regional cable sports network in Pittsburgh that reaches 2.5 million cable homes. He achieved a major coup when he successfully negotiated and coordinated the first-ever live telecast of the 2012 WVIAC Tournament’s men’s basketball championship game on ROOT Sports. In addition to his experience as a member of the West Liberty University’s senior staff and broadcaster at West Liberty, Amos also has the benefit of being a successful collegiate coach and NCAA administrator.

28

Amos was responsible for developing the largest Division II tournament radio network in the nation and has also worked as director of business development for an information technology government contractor as well as director of operations for a radio ownership group. Amos cut his teeth in the broadcasting business during 13 years as Sports Director at WMMN-AM radio in Fairmont, W.Va., where he handled play-by-play duties for the football and basketball teams at Fairmont State. He began working at the station while still a student at FSU. A Fairmont native and a graduate of Fairmont Senior High, Amos graduated from Fairmont State in 1994 with a B.A. in Speech Communication and earned his Master’s Degree in Communications from West Virginia University in 1996. He resides in Fairmont with his wife, Jennie, and their children, Elizabeth and Cate.

He also serves as Chief of Staff in addition to working in an advisory capacity to the commissioner. Zundell oversees and administers the all-conference awards, in addition to the academic awards given each semester and the league’s annual awards. He was also heavily involved with the creation and implementation of the league’s conference-wide digital network, which delivers hours of streaming MEC content online and on OTT devices. Zundell was a member of the D2SIDA Board of Directors from 2013-16, and currently serves on the NCAA Atlantic Region Advisory Committee for men’s soccer. Additionally, he is also Atlantic Region coordinator for the Division II Collegiate Commissioners Association men’s basketball team. He served as the editor and provided a majority of the content for fightingfalcons.com, in addition to overseeing the site’s re-design in 2010. FSU was recognized as having the top initiative in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for three-straight years, and the 2011 campaign, “Put Your Best Fairmont Forward,” was recognized by the NCAA as the best in country. Prior to coming to Fairmont State, Zundell spent three years at the University of Maryland as an assistant sports information director. At Maryland, he was the primary media relations liaison for men’s soccer, wrestling and women’s lacrosse. 2020 Mountain east conference Basketball Tournament

This IS The mountain east conference The Mountain East Conference was conceived in 2012 with the mission of combining institutions that shared the goal of competing at the highest level of NCAA Division II athletics. The MEC’s footprint includes nine schools in West Virginia, two in Ohio and one in Virginia. The Mountain East Conference sponsors 19 championship sports. In just under seven years of existence, the MEC has established itself as one of the top leagues both in the region and in the country. Since its beginning, MEC members have enjoyed unprecedented levels of success compared to their previous 20 years of participation at the NCAA Division II level. The league’s successes have spread across numerous institutions, seasons and sports helping to quickly establish its well-respected reputation. Among the highlights are: • 3 NCAA team championships with Wheeling winning the volleyball title in 2015 and the University of Charleston claiming the men’s soccer championships in 2017 and 2019. • 5 different schools have competed in 8 NCAA championship games in four different sports ... all NCAA title game appearances were the first for those institutions. • MEC institutions have made 15 appearances in the NCAA semifinals. • All 12 institutions have qualified a team for NCAA postseason play since joining the conference. • The MEC has earned over 130 berths into the NCAA postseason since its inaugural year. • The league has won 22 Atlantic Region/Super Region 1 championships. • The conference has produced 9 NCAA Elite 90 winners (presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative gradepoint average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 90 championships). • The MEC has had 5 different programs ranked No. 1 in the country, including three in men’s basketball.

The MEC has already had two schools claim national championships with Wheeling winning the title in 2015 in volleyball and the University of Charleston taking the men’s soccer title in 2017 and 2019. Among the highlights from this academic year came in cross country where the MEC sent multiple teams to the NCAA Championships (Charleston, Davis & Elkins), and also sent a women’s program to the NCAA Championships (Davis & Elkins). In addition to the MEC success of its programs, the league is also expanding its championship offerings. The conference combined with the Great Midwest Athletic Conference for a second-straight year to conduct a swimming and diving championship, and the MEC will be the first conference to host a championship in the sport of acrobatics and tumbling in 2019-20. In February, the league had its first-ever championship in wrestling and indoor track and field. In addition to team success, individuals have been put in a position to earn accolades as well earning numerous region Player of the Year awards and All-America honors in multiple sports. The success of MEC institutions and individuals has demonstrated the league’s motto of “providing opportunities and pursuing excellence.” Along with the success on the field, MEC student-athletes have excelled in the classroom as well. In the fall of 2019, over 900 student-athletes were recognized by the league for maintaining over a 3.25 in the fall semester, including over 350 who posted a GPA of 3.70 or better. An MEC athlete has been awarded the Elite 90 award on nine occasions, including UC men’s soccer player Conor Branson who earned the award in successive years in 2014 and 2015. The Mountain East Conference is located in Bridgeport, W.Va. For more information, visit www.mountaineast.org.
