Basketball Bucs ready to turn the corner this season By Duane Carpenter Sports Editor

TENNERTON – In his third year as head coach of the Buckhannon-Upshur boys’ basketball team, Travis Foster feels the pieces are in place for his Buccaneer basketball team to make some noise during the 2019-20 season. “We are starting to have a roster of players that we have developed now,” remarked Foster. “I think you going to see a different mentality from this team. A different way to win and working to win. We hope that their hard work in the off-season begins to pay off and turns into wins. The players deserve to see that light and the end of the tunnel.” It certainly paid off this past Saturday as Foster and his Bucs earned a signature win over No. 1 Meadville in Pennsylvania with a 66-53 victory during the Brooke Holiday Tournament.

That game was just one of the many tough games the Bucs will face this season. They opened the season on the road against a ranked Wheeling Park team and the schedule still features games against Morgantown, University, and Parkersburg. “We know we aren’t quite a state championship team yet, but let’s see if we can turn the corner coming out of these games with positives and possibly wins,” noted Foster. “We are going to be a team that fights and battles with more talent than from last year. I think it will be interesting to see where we are at in February come sectional time.” The Bucs are off to a 3-2 start to the season with wins over Preston, Brooke and Meadville. Foster and his team have also had to deal with not having a true home game yet this season. A leak in the gym roof has

forced the Bucs to play their first two home games at West Virginia Wesleyan College. They have been led by junior point guard Ryan Hurst thus far. Hurst is expected to play a lot of minutes as the Bucs ball-handler. He was just named the MVP of the Brooke Holiday Tournament scoring 39 points with 17 assists during their two games. Joining Hurst in the backcourt will be one of the Bucs two seniors – Tyler Sandreth. Underneath, the Bucs will have plenty of talent and depth. Senior Ryan Strader, juniors Zach White, Will McCauley, Josh Loudin and Noam Keith and sophomores Lamar Hurst and Mason Hyre will provide plenty of scoring and rebounding for the Bucs this season. It has been a busy pre-season and season for Foster as he is coaching all three teams, the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams.

With 11 freshmen coming out, the Bucs will have a freshman team for the first time in many seasons. “It has been stressful but you have to flip the switch for all three teams,” explained Foster. “You get here at 3:30 p.m. and leave at 11 p.m. with 4-5 hours of practice and giving them everything I have isn’t easy. I am here for the kids though and I was not going to not have a freshman team and deny them of playing games because of last-minute decisions. Coaching all three teams is just the right thing to do.” Joining Foster on the sidelines are assistant coaches Darrell Burgess and Keith Wolverton. “We are going to be exciting to watch this year,” concluded Foster. “The kids are really buying into what we are doing and believe in the program. That has been the biggest thing that the team is buying in.”

Lady Bucs seeking a return trip to Charleston this season By Duane Carpenter Sports Editor

TENNERTON – Rob Kittle is entering his second year as head coach of the Buckhannon-Upshur Lady Buc basketball program and he hopes having that first year under his belt will lead to more success this season. The Lady Bucs finished 13-10 last year and fell short of their goal of a return trip to Charleston for the state tournament. “I think having that first season completed, the girls know a little more about what to expect, how practices will go and what I expect from them from an effort stand-point and game play. I think it makes it a little easier on them,” remarked Kittle. Kittle said the goal as always is to make it to Charleston. “We had a lot of injuries last year, but hopefully we can stay healthy this year and

get back to Charleston,” stated Kittle. “That is always our goal and that is where we want the program to stay at.” If the Lady Bucs want to return to Charleston, they are going to have to do it with a roster of currently 16 girls. Kittle is hopeful to maybe add a few more as the season goes along. “We have to stay healthy with only 16 on the roster if we want to be successful,” noted Kittle. The low numbers have already cost the Lady Bucs three games have been scrapped, one at the varsity level and two at the junior varsity level. The team had to postpone a trip to Parkersburg South and then the junior varsity contest was canceled this past Saturday at Lincoln due to illnesses. Still, Kittle has a nice nucleus of players coming back with two starters returning. Leading the way will be a pair of seniors in center Kassidy Wilfong and returning

starter guard/forward Brooklyn Maxwell. Shelby McDaniels returns as the second starter after starting last year as a freshman in the backcourt. Kennedy Samargo, saw action in 10 games returns as does Kiara Woods andAlayna Nesbitt who both saw limited time last season at the varsity level. Junior McKenzie Reynolds returns to the team after playing as a freshman and Kittle expects freshmen Kendal Currence and Lexi Kelley to contribute to the team. “We have a very young team and a lot of girls that really need to take the next step for us to be successful,” stated Kittle. “If we get to where I want us to be, we can still go nine or 10 deep. I want us to play at a faster tempo and get the ball up and down the court a little more. We have the athleticism to play that type of game. Baskets might be at a premium for us this year so we have to be

a lot more team oriented and get those easy baskets when we can. Hopefully we can run the court and finish shots in transition.” Kittle said he is challenging the team to step it up to get to a high level of play this season. “We are pushing them in practice,” said Kittle. “We are lining them up against each other and telling them they are playing for playing time and to see who wants to step up.” The Lady Bucs are off to a 3-2 start with win over Lewis County, Elkins and Lincoln. Kittle sees the Big 10 Conference as being pretty solid again this season. “Fairmont Senior, North Marion and Lincoln will all be very good,” noted Kittle. “Then our region with Morgantown, DUANE CARPENTER/The Record Delta University, Wheeling Park will be solid once again.” Lady Buc seniors — The two seniors on the 2019-20 BuckJoining Kittle on the bench hannon-Upshur Lady Buc basketball team are Kassidy this season once again will be Wilfong (24) and Brooklyn Maxwell (14). assistant coaches Ryan Webb and Chad Wilfong.”

Wrestling Buccaneers continue to build on success

By Duane Carpenter Sports Editor TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur wrestling roster shows 19 grapplers for the 2019-20 season, but the Bucs are still limited when it comes to filling out an entire weight class, especially for dual meets. That isn’t anything new for head coach Jacob Orr as he continues to stress getting better and individual progress over team scores. “The chances of our roster separating and filling those 14 weight classes is probably slim, but we take what we can get and we will go from there,” stated Orr. “I have always said though in wrestling, success isn’t always defined by wins

and losses, especially in dual meets. The end goal is to make the wrestlers the best versions of themselves that we can. We don’t dwell on the wins and the losses as much as their development.” Orr said seeing a wrestler’s development from the time they arrive in the preseason to the end of the year is one of the most satisfying things for him as a coach. “Anytime you can see a kid’s development, of how maybe they were stumbling over themselves at the start but to see them in March competing against people that may have beat them at the start of the season is a very satisfying feeling. Really though its more for them because they get to see it as well and live through

that growth. Getting to see that light bulb go on is the icing on the cake.” The roster is loaded with talent including seven grapplers that made the state tournament last season in Aidan Wilson Julius Hobbs, Breagan Pearson Todd Cutlip, Alex Bennett and Jacob Smithson. Smithson was the state’s runner-up last year at the state tournament in the 160-pound weight division. Hobbs finished the state meet in third place at 120 pounds while Pearson claimed sixth in the 145-pound division. Wilson and Hurst both earned wins at the state meet as well. Orr still has a very young team with just two seniors on it in Smithson and Cutlip. The roster features 12 un-

derclassman. Orr said hard work has been the key to their success over the years. “There is no magic to our success,” remarked Orr. “It’s just wrestling on the mat and keep grinding every day and get better each and every day.” The Bucs have been tested early at the Musselman Duals and the Wheeling Park Duals. “We got to see some outof-state teams at both duals,” explained Orr. “We have faced a lot of quality competition already.” Orr said the goals of the season never change for his team. “Just to continue to grow,” said Orr. “Grow as leaders, grow as athletes and grow as men. Just to watch them push themselves to be better each day.”

By Duane Carpenter Sports Editor

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur Buccaneer and Lady Buc swim teams have had a successful start to their 2019-20 season. They started the season in a loaded field at the Marshall Invite with the girls taking third and boys fourth. The girls then took fourth at their own home meet while the boys were fifth in the Splash

Williams Invitational. They then competed at the new Mylan Park Aquatic Center, home of the state championships this year with the girls taking fourth and the boys 10th. They followed that up with solid performances in tri meets at home and Philip Barbour. Records have falling this for both teams as freshmen Cadence Vincent broke a seven-year mark by Maggie Miller in the 50-yard freestyle

and then broke another record held by Miller in the 200-yard freestyle. On the boy side, freshmen Preston Bennett broke an eightyear old school mark in their season opener in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:12.79 and then during their second meet of the season, he broke his own record with a time of 2:12.12. The boys roster shows a total of eight swimmers, two seniors, two juniors, one sophomore and

three freshmen. The girls roster is slightly bigger with 10 swimmers – four seniors, two juniors, two sophomores and two freshmen. “We have had some really good swims meets,” remarked second-year Buckhannon-Upshur head coach Will Squires after a recent meet. “We have so many swimmers that are so close to their best times, but in comparison to last season at this point, we are looking much stronger.”

Basketball teams will look for more consistency as the calendar turns

By Duane Carpenter Sports Editor BUCKHANNON – Both the West Virginia Wesleyan men’s and women’s basketball teams will look for more consistency as the calendar turns to January. For the men, they are trending in the right direction. Following an 0-5 start to the season, the ‘Cats have won four of their last six and own a 4-7 mark. More importantly, the ‘Cats are playing well within the Mountain East Conference and currently own a 4-2 league mark which has them in a fourway tie for second place. Their season was jump started back on Dec. 4 when they traveled to West Liberty and

defeated the nationally-ranked Hilltoppers by a 94-91 score. Senior forward Dusan Vicentic leads the Bobcats in scoring averaging with 15.3 points per contest over the first 11 games. Vicentic also leads the teams in rebounding and is fifth in the MEC with an 8.2 rebounding average. Senior guard Luka Petrovic paces the team in steals with five a game which puts him second in conference behind Fairmont State’s Dale Bonner. He leads the team in steals as well averaging 1.64 per game, 11th best in the MEC. For the women, they had a solid start to the season posting a 3-3 record but are now mired in a six-game losing streak dropping their record to 3-8.

They started the early season picking up wins over PSAC members Mansfield and Shippensburg and their MEC opener over Frostburg. They dropped a 94-60 decision to Fairmont State on Nov. 26 and haven’t won since. Part of their issues are they are dead last in scoring offense in the MEC averaging just 58 points per game and are last in field goal percentage shooting the ball at just 34 percent. Senior forward Nicole Gilyard leads them in scoring with 12.6 points per game and in rebounding averaging 6.5 rebounds per game. Both teams will be back in action Sunday, Jan. 5 at West Virginia University Tech and then remain on the road Wednesday to face Charleston.
