Derico named to national board By John Clise Editor

WESTON — Lewis County Schools’ Child Nutrition Director Chris Derico has been named to the national board of directors for the School Nutrition Association, a national, nonprofit professional organization representing more than 58,000 members who provide high-quality, low-cost meals to students across the country. SNA is recognized as the authority on school nutrition. SNA has been advancing the availability, quality and acceptance of school nutrition programs as an integral part of education since 1946. According to their website, in 1964, SNA established a sister organization called the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF), which plays a critical role by raising money for professional development and outreach programs, as well as providing members with tuition assistance opportunities. With 49 state affiliates, hundreds of local chapters and thousands of school nutrition members and industry partners, SNA brings a unique, firsthand perspective to child nutrition

issues. At no cost to the school system or taxpayers, Derico recently attended the SNA 2019 annual national conference in St. Louis Missouri. According to Derico, the conference was a good experience. The national board has high expectations for its members, and professional training is a priority. “I’m excited to be part of the SNA board, to learn more and to promote child nutrition,” he said. Attending the conference also allowed him to come in contact with new food and equipment vendors with new and fresh ideas regarding meal programs for school students. These are the types of ideas he can bring back to Lewis County and West Virginia to share with other school nutrition directors to better serve the needs of student meals. Derico said he had the opportunity to meet with several vendors regarding a revamp of the high school lunchroom to JOHN CLISE/Lewis County Community Guide a more bistro type of setting to include taller chairs and tables Lewis County Schools’Child Nutrition Director Chris to make it more comfortable for Derico was recently named as a board member to the national board of directors for the School Nutrition See Derico on Page 5 Association.

Wetzel “Sundown” Sanders Statement on death of Pearl Harbor survivor Wetzel “Sundown” Sanders CHARLESTON, WV – Gov. Jim Justice released the following statement after the passing of possibly West Virginia’s last Pearl Harbor survivor and West Virginia native, Wetzel Sanders. “West Virginia has lost a true American hero. Wetzel “Sundown” Sanders was a shining example of the traits that make our state so great. His selflessness and sense of duty called him to defend our freedoms in World War II. His incredible courage saw him through when his camp in Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. “The story of “Sundown” Sanders – a man who fought hard for the rights we treasure as West Virginians and as Americans – is one that will never be forgotten. His commitment to our country is one we should all admire. “Sanders was part of our nation’s greatest generation and he will forever be known as a West Virginia legend. There will never be another of his kind again. “Cathy and I ask that all West Virginians join us in prayer for his family during this time of mourning.” Sanders was a Lincoln County native who served in the Navy in World War II. He received a Purple Heart for his service in 2017. Sanders passed away over the weekend, he was 96 years old. U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) released the following statement on the death of World War II Veteran, Wetzel Sanders. “Gayle and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Wetzel “Sundown” Sanders, an American hero and an inspiration to all West Virginians. I was honored to be able to help Wetzel receive his well-deserved and hard earned Purple Heart recognition for his heroic service at Pearl Harbor before he passed. We join all West Virginians sending their prayers for his family during this difficult time.” WETZEL “SUNDOWN” SANDERS, 96, of Midkiff, WV, went to meet his loved ones beyond, August 18, 2019. Wetzel is preceded in death by his wife Kathleen Sanders; parents, Barney and Emma Sanders; Sister, Lillie Mae Fortner and Brother, Howard Sanders.

He is survived by three children, Sherry Handley, Beverly Sanders and Greg (Regina) Sanders, two grandchildren, B.J. (Tracey) and Ashley Sanders; three great grandchildren, Savannah (Kyle) Handley-Watts, Georgia and Macon Handley, one living sister remains, Willa Faye Fry age 99 and a host of many, many other family and friends. Wetzel was a Pearl Harbor survivor and WWII veteran. He served in the US Armyfrom 1941-1945, then in US Marine Corpfrom 1945-1948. Wetzel earned his purple heart at Pearl Harbor and finally received it 76 years later thanks to the efforts of his friend Senator Joe Manchin. After serving his country, he worked for, and retired from the WV Dept. of Highways. He then returned to work driving for the Tri-River Transit System and retired at age 86 as “the oldest bus driver in America”. Wetzel lived an extraordinary life at least, “ I’m satisfied with it” as he would often say. He was loved by all, well, at least most, who met him. His true loves; his children, truck, guns, four wheeler, garden and watermelons, but not necessarily in that order! Also, of highest rating, His God and country~! And that is the correct order! Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday August 22 at McGhee-Handley Funeral Home, West Hamlin, WV. The burial will follow in the Dial Cemetery, Branchland, WV. A visitation will be Wednesday August 22 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Condolences can be left at www.handleyfh. com. Operation Crystal Mountain concludes in WV

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The United States Drug Enforcement Administration this week announced the conclusion of Operation Crystal Mountain, a sweeping enforcement action spanning three states. DEAspecial agents, working closely with their state and local counterparts throughout Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia targeted Mexican drug cartels, drug trafficking organizations and other individuals involved in the manufacturing and distribution of methamphetamine. More than 800 pounds of methamphetamine were interdicted or seized during the operation. “Everyone has a right to live in safety. The amount of drugs and weapons we’ve taken off the street with this operation, along with the number of drug dealers that we’ve locked up, represents a small victory in our on-going fight for safer communities for us all,” said Special Agent in Charge of DEA’s Louisville Division Office D. Christopher Evans. “While America’s opioid crisis may dominate headlines, Operation Crystal Mountain should serve as a reminder that methamphetamine is a problem that has never gone away. The dedicated men and women of DEA, working closely with state and local law enforcement, are relentless in their efforts to rid our neighborhoods of dangerous drugs and bring to justice those who distribute them, wherever they may be.” Operation Crystal Mountain is the culmination of several investigations that began earlier this year. Since January, DEA special agents from the Louisville Field Division, with support from state and local law enforcement agencies across the region, have arrested 235 individuals on federal drug-related charges and seized more than $800,000 in cash and 52 firearms, as well as significant quantities of heroin, fentanyl and other drugs. During this same timeframe, DEA assisted its state and local counterparts with the arrest of 140 additional offenders on state-level drug charges. While the opioid epidemic has ravaged the nation, several large swaths of the U.S. see meth as their primary drug threat. The majority of the methamphetamine in the U.S. is produced in Mexico and trafficked by Mexican DTOs. However, DEA continues to work to disrupt and dismantle all components of both foreign and domestic organizations which produce and traffic methamphetamine. . Est 6 199

Burnsville track replacement dates

On September 5 and 6 the tracks in town, near the Little General Convenience Sore, will be closed from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. with only emergency vehicle crossing access. You will need to make necessary arrangements if you’re coming from or going to work during these times. On September 7 and 8, the crossing going out of town toward Glenville on Rt.5 will be closed during these same times, however there will be no access available at all. You will need to find alternate detours.

JMJ from Page 1 Johnny Staats, Ramie Bennett, Patrick Brooks, Doug Cossin, Dustin Frame, Bruce Jones, Richie Jones, Dan and Robin Kessinger, Buck McCumbers, Butch Osborne, Aaron and Alex Richards, Jeremy Wanless, There will also be impromptu sets and performing under the trees near the venue. You are invited to bring your musical instrument and play along. On Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. there will be an antique car show sponsored by Summer Knights Cruzin. The show will be located on the black top and grass from the historic gate to the Assembly Hall. Blue from Page 1 people who have extraordinary expenses not covered by insurances. “The Angel Fund can cover transportation to treatment, lodging, child care and other unavoidable expenses associated with the treating breast cancer,” said Marci Stump, Mon Health SJMH Oncology Nurse. “This will be a good time for a really great cause.” The Weston performance is the first of five Pink Ribbon Concerts to be sponsored around the region by Mon Health Systems during October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Weston-based event will be held at Thyme Bistro, the fine dining restaurant on Weston’s Main Avenue. Doors will open at 6pm with music beginning at 6:30pm. Thyme Bistro will be converted to a mini-music hall for the evening with the installation of temporary staging and lights. Approximately 50-60 seats at tables will be available for $25 dinner reservations, with music only theater style seats available for $10. Clise’s Cornucopia By John Clise Editor

I was needing a document notarized this past week, so off to the Louis Bennett Library and War Memorial I went. They offer a free notary service there for patrons. I hadn’t been to the library in several years. It was a little dull last time I was there. Not now. It is popping with life, positive energy and light. People were friendly and happy to help. The shelves were full of good books, DVDs and other resources for library patrons to check out. There are all sorts of activities now including a reading club for adults. It was really great to see how much had changed positively since I had last been there. There is a welcoming energy that makes me want to go back. It makes me want to read books again on a daily basis. Along the lines of computer use, the library has four public access computers received as a gift from the Gates Library Foundation. Library patrons can use numerous software programs and multimedia information tools, as well as the internet. The library has wireless Internet access. Visitors may bring their own laptops with wireless capabilities and work at one of the many tables in the library. There are also a number of newspapers and magazines for the enjoyment of patrons. Oh, did I mention the library has excellent air conditioning, and bike racks for people like me who like to use peddle power to get around town. If you haven’t been to the library lately, you should really go check it out. You’ll love it there. They also have complimentary library stickers to help promote the library. Check them out on Facebook for their latest breaking news and announcements. As its history goes, which I really love, too, the Louis Bennett Public Library was established in 1923. The library is housed in the Bennett 17 room mansion. The mansion was built by Jonathan McCally Bennett in 1875. The Bennett family lived in the house until 1922 when Mrs. Sallie Maxwell Bennett donated the house to the Lewis County Commission to be used as a public library. The Louis Bennett Public Library is administered by a five member Library Board appointed by the Lewis County Commission. The library receives financing from the West Virginia Library Commission, the Lewis County Board of Education Levy, the Lewis County Commission and local donations. This past Saturday I attended but did not participate in the Public Health Service 5K Walk/Run sponsored by Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Hospital. The participants showed some real grit in finishing. It was nearly 90 degrees and the humidity was about a million percent. That’s how it felt to me, and I wasn’t even running or walking. I was just standing there taking pictures getting overheated. I find the running community as a whole to be very supportive of one another and the efforts of their community regardless of the fitness level. It’s a great feeling to see everyone supporting everyone else in their shared goal. That’s a great part of the running community. Have a great rest of the week. Don’t forget the Jackson’s Mill Jubilee and Jane Lew Fireman’s Festival are coming up Labor Day weekend. Both should be a great time. Always something fun for the entire family.

AREA NEWS

By Pat Ridpath Community Columnist We had a wonderful Fellowship dinner Saturday, but for a bittersweet reason. (I use the word “bittersweet” often lately about something hinged to something not-so-good!) The good part of yesterday is the fact that a couple of our precious church family is moving to Texas to be near their son. I cannot fault that at all. When my son retired from his nursing job in Florida and moved to Buckhannon, WV, it made West Virginia more nearly like Heaven to me. Now all three of my children are here, so I could NOT pray that Mike and Sandi Stutler would NOT move to Texas! Being near their son, in my eyes, was a much better alternative for them, but I cry if I dwell on their leaving very much. Then later that afternoon I went to the senior center to meet with the Singing Seniors. Their own wonderful “band” group was playing when I got there and audience was singing. Soon Rick and Bonnie Cutright (my pastor and his wife) arrived and played and sang beautifully, with audience joining in for some of it. The Jacko family, Don, Cheryl, Jeremy, Becca, Sean and Emma from the Elkins Seventh-day Adventist Church provided surprisingly beautiful music with string instrument accompaniment. Their youngest player, Sean, was playing the bass that was way bigger than he! So cute! Someone called from the audience, “How old are you?” Sean answered, “Eight!” Then he was asked, “How old were you when you started playing?” He said, “Eight.” It was amazing. It was a very enjoyable time for all of us, I believe, but I wish more folks would come and enjoy the time with the Singing Seniors. Cheryl Jacko is teacher and Principal of the Highland Adventist Academy in Elkins. If you are interested in a Christian education for your children, go to https://www.highlandadventistschool.org/about/ faculty-and-staff. Music is a big thing at that school and they usually have concerts in the Elkins community throughout the year.

Pat’s Chat

28 Fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church continue with Number 23: MARRIAGE and the FAMILY In spite of the fact that most couples, on their wedding day, look forward to a long life together, divorces continue to increase and some marriages end before the reception has been paid for! In spite of their hopes and dreams when parents bring their babies home from the hospital, 70 percent of parents stated that they would not have children if they had it to do over again (based on the responses of 10,000 parents who answered a question by Ann Landers). We are always shocked at the breakup of a home, parental abuse, inadequate child care, the disrespect of children for their parents, and the lack of communication between family members. Marriage counselors, pastors, educators, and psychologists all try to offer positive solutions to these family problems, but their best advice is based on principles for marriage and family life that have been established by God in His Word. After all, every principle mentioned in the Bible, whether or not it is specifically directed to the family (such as the golden rule), can be applied to the family. WHERE MARRIAGE ORIGINATED The first marriage, officiated in Eden by God, was a model for marriages in all future generations. Because

Adam needed companionship, God created Eve (Genesis 2:18). When Adam saw her, he realized that she satisfied his needs, and he determined to satisfy hers. Adam said, “ ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called “woman,” for she was taken out of man.’ For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh” (Genesis 2:23, 24). The apostle Paul, writing in Ephesians, reiterated the concept of unity in marriage. He emphasized that the love, concern, and mutual interest of husband and wife for each other can be compared to Christ’s love for His church (Ephesians 5:21-33). In 2 Corinthians 6:14 Paul stated another important principle for a Christian marriage. Believers should not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. In other words, the husband and wife need to share the same faith. Experience as demonstrated the validity of this principle. Marriage between believers and unbelievers nearly always results in greater stress, more unhappiness on the part of both parties, compromise of one’s principles, and disagreement over the methods of child raising. God’s plan is for the home to be one of the most stable and permanent institutions in society. In order to stress this point, several times during His ministry on earth Jesus stated that the only basis for divorce is

unfaithfulness to the marriage vow; and anyone who divorces and remarries on some other basis is guilty of adultery (Matthew 5:31, 32; 19:9; Mark 10:11,12; Luke 16:18). So, what should people do who divorce in spite of the fact that they have no biblical basis for doing so? Paul advises, “A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife” (1 Corinthians 7:10, 11). By inviting Christ to be a third party in the marriage, husbands and wives will have a happier life together. A marriage prayer that was written by a husband illustrates this point: “I order that I might come closer to her, bring me closer to You than to her; in order that I may love her with a heartfelt love, help me to love You more than her and her more than anything else in the world. So that nothing may come between her and me, may You dwell between us at every moment. In order that we may always be together, take us with Yourself to the place of solitude. And when we find ourselves side-by-side, O God, may it be upon Your breast. Amen.” PARENTS AND CHILDREN The Bible emphasizes the importance of parents teaching their children to know the Lord and understand His commandments (Deuteronomy 6:3-9). It commands fathers to “bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). As they learn to love and trust their parents, children learn to love and confide in God as their heavenly Father. The Bible advises children to obey their parents in the Lord (Ephesians 6:1) and to honor them (Exodus20:12; Ephesians 6:2, 3). As parents and children open their hearts to the influence of the Holy Spirit, harmony and love will prevail in the home. The increasing closeness of one to another and to God will testify to the power of the final gospel message to create the kind of unity for which Christ prayed (Malachi 4:5; John 17:23). For further study: Proverbs 22:6; John 2:1-11; Ephesians 5:21-23.

SJMH employee of the month Michael Bennett, of Materials Management, has been chosen as the Employee of the Month for September 2019 at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital (SJMH), in Weston. He joined the SJMH family in May 2013 as an Emergency Department technician. He moved to nursing administration before assuming his current position in 2016. Michael is a Buckhannon resident; Buckhannon-Upshur High School graduate; and received his LPN degree from Pierpont Community and Technical College in 2016. His parents are David Bennett and the late Tammy Bennett, of Upshur County. He noted that he loves his job here at Stonewall but his true love is the showing and training of quarter horses and miniature horses. He also serves as the vice president of the Northern WV Quarter Horse Association. His nominator wrote, “Michael has been willing to help with meeting

minutes since Nastausha’s departure. He was instrumental in making sure that the Fireworks 5K went off without a hitch by volunteering to print and cut racer bib numbers and had them ready for use. Michael is always ready to help.” His manager, Angela Devericks, was also complimentary of Michael and wrote, “Michael is the purchasing agent here in Materials. In addition to his position he has also taken on the task of taking minutes for several committees; he sits on the Employee Review Board; and is always available to help, especially in nursing. I have worked with Michael for three years and feel that he is an asset to this department and the Hospital.” Michael was equally complimentary of the Hospital and truly enjoys his job. “We have a great time down here in Materials. It is a small department but we do treat each other like family,” Michael commented.
