WESTON — Memorial Day is a day that means many different things to so many people. At Mountaineer Military Museum, it means honoring are fallen heroes. During the annual Vet-Together, held each Memorial Day weekend, the War on terror Monument was unveiled on the front lawn of the museum with great reverence to our heroes of the War on Terror. According to Barbara McVaney, executive director and co-founder of the museum, she and her husband Ron, the man behind the museum, were approached by a group of veterans interested in seeing such a monument placed on the grounds of the museum. According to McVaney, the group of veterans raised the funds for the monument over the course of two years which culminated in the unveiling of the monument. Ina first for the museum, representatives of the WV Gold Star Mothers Organization stopped by for a visit, according to McVaney, WVGSM President Shirley White led the delegation. McVaney reported the group thoroughly enjoyed their visit. The Mountaineer Military Museum is the result of “The Promise” to honor and remember those who served and sacrifice for the freedoms that we enjoy. According to their website, childhood friends were drafted into their country’s service and only one made it home. A graveside promise was made that “I’ll never let anyone forget you guys.” See War on Page 2

Lewis County sits at the crossroads of I-79 and Corridor-H. Group members note that while there are many things to love about the community, because it is home, there are many things that need fixed. U.S. Census data reports that the county population has continually declined since the 1970’s. In their mission statement on Facebook, the group states “We must take responsibility for our situation and do the work to make it better. There are several groups of citizens already working on projects to enhance our quality of life. We appreciate and applaud their efforts. With this group, we aim to ‘think outside the box’. We believe that having a vision and sharing it with like minds will improve our chances for progress and success. Everyone’s voice is important and worthwhile.”

FRIDAY Chance of Showers 75/56

By John Clise Editor LEWIS COUNTY – This year’s Lewis County Relay for Life is set for Sat., June 8 from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Robert L. Bland Middle School athletic field. This year’s relay event is sure to be another successful event with 16 teams registered with a combined team membership of well over 100 people. According to their website, fund raising for the 2019 one is over $36,000 and counting. One of the most popular and touching parts of relay is the lighting of luminarias in memory of a loved one who is battling cancer or has battled cancer. Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome it. When you attend a Relay event, you’ll see the Luminarias decorated with names and sometimes SATURDAY Mostly Sunny 77/59

messages to the people they’re dedicated to. After dark, Relay participants share an emotional moment when each Luminaria is lit in remembrance of a life touched by cancer. Together, we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones they’re dedicated to. When you make a donation for a Luminaria it helps fund the American Cancer Society’s mission to help save lives. Relay also includes many other events and observances including the opening ceremony. According to American Cancer Society, the opening ceremony kicks things off right with a welcoming all the Relay participants. As tradition goes, first the survivors take a celebratory lap, with the crowd cheering them on. Then caregivers take their turn to get recognized for all they do to support their loved ones. For more information, check them out on Facebook or visit them online at www.relayforlife.org/lewiswv.

FROM THE COVER

War from Page 1 Ron McVaney vowed to keep his promise. He had collected hundreds of pieces of memorabilia over the last thirty-five years. Upon retiring, he told his wife Barbara that the time had come to share their memorabilia with the public. With the help of the Lewis County Board of Education, Lewis County Commission, and the public, the Mountaineer Military Museum became a reality. The Mountaineer Military Museum has recently added 2,100 sq. feet and has created more than 18 new exhibits, featuring personal and historical items from the Korean, Vietnam, and Civil War. There is also created a reflection room, a place where you can go and honor those who have fallen before us. The Museum will be open to public, private, organizational, and educational tours. The Museum will be open April - December on Saturdays only from 10am - 4pm. To make a mid-week appointment, call (304)-472-3943. Be sure to follow the museum on Facebook. BBQ from Page 1 In addition, the WV Grand Champion also receives an entry to the American Royal BBQ Competition. Organizers are also pleased to have 100 percent KCBS certified BBQ judges in 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 assuring KCBS judging standards are followed. Pat’s Chat

By Pat Ridpath Community Columnist

On Sabbath, June 1, 2019, we plan to honor fathers a little early for Father’s Day. We are asked to bring a dad to Sabbath School and church and the Fellowship Dinner afterwards. I am hoping my neighbor will come, but I haven’t asked him yet. We are also to bring a picture of our father and label it so everyone will know whose father he is. If you are a “dad” please come and bring your family. My father, Harry Vernon Wiant, was a very special man. He was a teacher in one room schools, ending his career in the Burnsville High School, teaching in the upper grades. (We were very fortunate to have 12 years of schooling in the same building and I even had my dad as a teacher for math in the eighth grade.) My father’s character traits, among others, were love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance. Yes, he truly did have ALL the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) is a, in his one sweet self. Ask any of his former students (or any of his own children) and they would probably say they loved him and felt that he loved them. They will remember feeling love from him in his teasing and joking and laughing manner that brightened the lives of everyone he knew, bringing joy to lives. Peace would describe my dad. He hated controversy. He promoted peace. Impatience was only evident if students and family were tardy, slow at work, etc., but he was a worrier, so his patience grew thin in the face of laziness, dishonesty, lying, unfairness, etc., and he would try to help opponents reach a peaceful settlement. Gentleness showed his strength. He hunted for food and sport, but at times showed how gentle he truly was by carrying a spider outside rather than crush and kill it. I think “goodness” is the word that best described Dad. Many comments from former students thought of him as their favorite teacher, and some said he was the only person they had ever known who nobody ever had anything bad to say about. I can add another characteristic of Dad that you may think is unbelievable; Dad never said anything derogatory about anyone, EVER. His faith in God and steadfast adherence to honesty, justice and all the other Christian virtues has left me and my siblings, and many students, a legacy of understanding our Heavenly Father’s love. I will skip our Fundamental Doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (Number 14, The “Church.”) Maranatha

LEWIS COUNTY – A suspended Lewis County magistrate has appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Aloi on federal charges after recently being indicted. Roger D. Clem Jr., 47, of Weston, appeared Aloi, last week, on one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, two counts of wire fraud, two counts of mail fraud and one count of obstruction of justice. According to court reports, Clem is accused of allegedly taking favorable actions in court for E-Z Out, including setting unnecessary surety bonds. He also is accused of

calling the business to arrange the bond of a detainee without presenting a list of authorized bonding companies to the detainee. According to court reports, Clem has hired Harry Smith, III, of Elkins, to represent him in the matter. Clem’s co-defendant in the case, also suspended without pay, Gilmer County Magistrate Alton L. Skinner, II, Sand Fork, requested a public defender due to a financial hardship. In the case investigated by Jeff Shriner, agent for the West Virginia Commission on Special Investigations, and the IRS, Clem and Skinner were

indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, two counts of wire fraud, two counts of mail fraud and one count of obstruction of justice. Skinner was also charged with one count of false statement to a federal agent. The charges involve E-Z Out LLC, based in Sand Fork, which is an authorized bonding company in Lewis County, the government has alleged. According to company records, E-Z Out is operated solely by Alton Skinner’s spouse and employs Skinner’s son as an authorized bonding agent, U.S. Attorney Bill Powell’s office stated.

Clem and Skinner each face up to 20 years’ incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for each of the conspiracy, wire fraud, mail fraud and obstruction counts. Skinner also faces up to five years’ incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for the false statement count. Under federal sentencing guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendants. Both men are currently free on signature bonds awaiting future court dates.

WESTON - Last Monday and Tuesday the Lewis County High School Minutemen baseball team competed against Bridgeport for the regional championship. The Minutemen traveled to Bridgeport on Monday and hosted them on Tuesday. This was a lose and go home or

Rugar needs a new home

By Tara Kennedy Staff Writer

Rugar is a black and brindle Plott Hound available for immediate adoption at the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility. He is about one year old and has already been neutered. Rugar is up to date on his vaccinations and he is negative for heartworm and lyme disease. Now all he needs is a loving new home. Rugar enjoys attention and has a very calm personality. He does great

with other dogs, even the hyper ones. He walks on a leash well and is very gentle. Rugar is also very smart and treat motivated, so he trains easily. If you’d like to meet Rugar, please visit the L-UAC facility located on Mud Lick Road in Buckhannon. They are open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, or you can call 304-4723865.

11,210 spring turkeys harvested in 2019

SOUTH CHARLESTON – Preliminary data indicates spring turkey hunters harvested 11,210 gobblers this year, according to Mike Peters, Game Bird and Small Game Project Leader for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Although 9 percent less than last year, this year’s harvest is still 3 percent above the 5-year average and 9% above the 10-year average. Districts 4 and 5, encompassing the southern and southwestern counties, reported slight increases above last year’s harvests with the remaining districts harvesting fewer birds than last year. Hunters in District 1 in the northern part of the state

harvested 656 fewer birds than last year, a 20 percent decrease. However, the counties in District 1 harvested the most birds again this year (2,762), followed by District 6 (2,362), District 5 (1,839), District 3 (1,659), District 4 (1,521) and District 2 (1,067). The five counties with the highest harvest were Mason (464), Preston (455), Jackson (447), Wood (362), and Harrison (347). Youth hunters harvested 357 turkeys during the one-day youth season April 13, which was 74 fewer than last year. Those numbers are included in the table below with county totals.
