WESTON – Ember Arts, located on West Second Street, will host a fundraiser acrylic pour paint party from noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, May 5, to benefit the college efforts of an area student chosen to participate in national program. Abby Casto, a Buckhannon-Upshur High School student with deep roots to Lewis County, was nominated to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum: Law and CSI (a.k.a. Envision) in Washington, D.C. this summer. It is an opportunity the aspiring lawyer said was invaluable to helping her prepare for her future. “I have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity so rare that I have never known one person who has attended this program.” Casto said. Envision is a forum taking place July 7-12, July 1419, and July 21-26, focusing on law and crime scene investigation. Participants spend six days at the nation’s capital with experts in the field who will share invaluable teachings via hands-on experience to help students reach their potential. Completion of the program will make Casto and other select participants across the country eligible for college credit from George Mason University. “The only problem is the tuition cost is very high and hard to pay for.” Casto said. She has received some donations from family and friends and has been making monthly payments but collecting See Painting on Page 5

There has always been confusion between drivers attempting to exit I-79 and those attempting to enter I-79 southbound as the entrance and exits cross paths making it difficult to know who slows down and who speeds up to facilitate a safe exit or entry. Spelsberg said it is a bit of a dangerous interchange. Once work is underway, the estimated date of completion is expected to be sometime in the spring of 2021. The project will eliminate the current Exit 99 southbound ramps and create a new set of ramps to eliminate what the state calls a “conflict point.” Additional signals are also going to be installed along Rt. 33 to better control the flow of traffic. Work is set to begin on the redesign of the I-79/Rt. 33 Exit 99 interchange May 6, according to reports from the West Virginia Division of Highways. The approximately $24 million project is expected to alleviate long time safety concerns from drivers entering and exiting the southbound lanes of I-79. Lewis County Commission President Agnes Queen noted commissioners recently met with DOH officials and they were assured the interchange would not be closed, and both I-79 and Rt. 33 will remain open during the construction project. The only time traffic might be detoured through either Weston or Jane Lew would be in the event of a traffic accident in the construction zone. Such detours, according to Queen, will only be temporary until the wreck is cleared. The interchange has been a safety concern for decades in the community. network of rescue groups and volunteers. Luv 4 Animals and Claws & Whiskers Rescue Foundation are two of the groups that have helped L-UAC to turn things around. In addition to volunteers providing manpower to help care for the animals’ needs like getting them out of kennels for exercise and socialization, they also help L-UAC to network, transport and coordinate adoptions events. The West Virginia Legislature passed a bill that became effective in 2005 requiring all animals adopted from a shelter in WV to be spayed or neutered. Since this can be very expensive with the volume of animals they care for, Luv 4 Animals is gracious enough to help sponsor spaying and neutering. Claws & Whis-
The Lewis-Upshur Animal Control (L-UAC) Facility has made great strides over the past few years to save the lives of animals that end up in their shelter. L-UAC is located on Mud Lick Road in Buckhannon and is an animal welfare organization that serves the needs of two counties, Lewis and Upshur. It is a rural facility with limited means to serve the duty that they are called to do for the area, but along with fantastic volunteers, they are very committed to finding homes for as many animals as possible. In the past, this facility was known as a high-kill shelter, but things have drastically changed. Every possible effort is made to secure adoptions and they work closely with a See L-UAC on Page 5

He reminisced about catching a native trout in a stream “not three feet wide.” Justice applauded the work of West Virginia Tourism Commissioner Chelsea Ruby.
Governor Jim Justice made an announcement Friday afternoon at Audra State Park marking his longtime commitment to West Virginia’s state parks and tourism industry. Minutemaids Softball Pick Up Final Regular Season Win By Wyatt Burns Sports correspondent WESTON- The Lewis County High School Softball Team played four games this week. The ‘Maids picked up one win over the stretch. The ‘Maids defeated Bridgeport, and lost to Philip Barbour, Nicholas County, and East Fairmont. The game against Bridgeport was rained out, but the donation of a field tarp allowed the teams to battle in Lewis
County. Lewis County defeated Bridgeport 12-5. A huge 6th inning propelled the ‘Maids to victory. The ‘Maids put eight runs on Bridgeport, all with two outs. They also got six of the eleven hits in this inning. A bunt single by Tiffany Curtis kicked off the inning. Support also came from a single by Zoey Henline, and doubles from Abby Hartley, Payton Campbell, Morgan Riffle, and Emma Cayton. Two errors also helped out the ‘Maids in the inning. Riffle and Henline recorded
multiple hits. Eight of the nine hitters for the ‘Maids recorded at least one hit in the victory. An excellent complete game from Henline helped Lewis County. She recorded four strike outs in the win. The ‘Maids lost in a few heart-breakers over the week. Philip-Barbour put up three runs in the last inning to defeat the ‘Maids. Not much went right for Lewis County other than two hits for Lucy Duncan. Two errors in the sixth inning allowed for Nicholas
County to collect seven runs and ten run the ‘Maids. Four total errors plagued Lewis County. Lewis only collected three hits in the contest. The ‘Maids lost 11-1. Lewis again loses a tough game. A three run first and a two run third by East Fairmont put the game away. The ‘Maids chipped away one run at a time in the 1st,4th,5th innings. The ‘Maids had a bases loaded walk to get within one, and then a bases loaded strikeout ended in yet another heartbreaker, 5-4.
This year’s tournament was hosted in two locations, Lincoln and Robert C. Byrd High Schools. The LCHS tennis team saw great improvements over the year. This year’s team had many placers in this spring’s Big 10 tournament. Seven singles and one double team placed
in the top seven in this year’s spring tournament. Ethan Thomas walked away with a second-place trophy. Ian McDougall in the doubles pair of Hayden Barnett and Jared Skinner placed 3rd.The Minutemen took two losses in the semifinal rounds with Colin
Dodson and Bryson Greenlief going down. The Minutemaids did not escape the quarter final either. No one for the ‘Maids made it past this round. Three ladies, Savannah King, Sky Nichols, and Kia Renee Villiers all fell.

Part of the proceeds will benefit the military museum. Thomason is happy to help Buckhannon residents Ron and Barbara McVaney, who are proprietors of the Museum. “This couple have put their heart and soul into the Military Museum. The cost is $15 and interested parties can call Tammy at 304-452-0490. Racers can register at www. webscorer.com. This circuit will include a race every month of 2019 in Lewis County to provide opportunities for the community to participate in healthy activities. This circuit is a combination of prior existing races such as the Rush Run at Stonewall Resort, the Weston 5K and newly formed races. Kevin Stalnaker, Assistant CEO at SJMH stated “The Community has directed us in our Community Assessments over the years that the obesity epidemic is something critical to our area. As such, we want to encourage healthy lifestyles and continued physical activity opportunities are key in those efforts.” These races are for the competitive and noncompetitive individual. Walkers are always welcome and encouraged. Stalnaker continued ”I participate in many of these events myself and at just about every race, someone says, ‘this is my first 5K, but not my last.’” This Circuit will include unique opportunities and partnerships in the area. Schoolcraft history to be told May 4
In the late 1700s, almost all of the Schoolcraft family in West Virginia were killed or captured by Indians. Jacob, at age 9, was captured, and when grown, he managed to escape. He searched for and found his father, John, who had lost all of his large family within a few short months. Consequently, anyone in West Virginia with the surname Schoolcraft or who is related to a Schoolcraft are most likely descended from Jacob. On Sat., May 4, at 10 a.m., Schoolcrafts and those related to Schoolcrafts will gather at Hacker’s Creek Pioneer Descendants Library on Abbotts Run Rd., in Horner, to honor the family and share stories, a meal, and fellowship. They will travel to the nearby burial site of Jacob’s mother and siblings. At noon, they will share a lunch. Those attending should bring a dish to share. If you want to learn about your heritage, this would be a good opportunity to do so. Bring your laptop or smart phone and the ancestral information you know, and cousins will help you explore and build your family tree. For questions or more information, contact Fred Schoolcraft at 704-473-1306.

SJMH celebrates Lab Week
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Employees of the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital lab celebrate Lab Week.
Submitted by Angie Cedeño This week we want to wish the laboratory a very Happy Lab Week! The lab usually has a themed celebration which involves lots of food, games, and prizes all week long. They typically have vendors come in to present lunch-and-learns. Lab management provides lots of games, and they especially look forward to the lab scavenger hunt every year. Lab is very competitive. This year one of their games includes “Guess the Bitmoji” of lab staff and also random staff from the entire hospital. The lab staff look forward to lab week every year as a celebration of their hard work. The laboratory is composed of Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS), Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT), and Phlebotomists. MLS and MLTs process and analyze specimens, perform laboratory tests, maintain instruments, and ensure quality behind all of the testing. Doctors are able to identify infections, choose appropriate antibiotic therapy, and diagnose diseases thanks to the hard work of these laboratory professionals. Medical laboratory scientists typically have a bachelor’s degree from a university. Medical laboratory technicians typically have associate degrees that have been completed through a community college. Both MLT and MLS can perform laboratory tests and are certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) which is their Board of Registry. Phlebotomists at SJMH are all nationally certified through NHA, ASPT, and AMT. Phlebotomists are eligible for certification from either taking a college curriculum to receive the phlebotomy certificate or from having numerous years of experience. Phlebotomists are highly skilled at phlebotomy techniques, understanding patient identification, and ensuring that the pre-analytical process is followed to ensure accuracy of results. This includes drawing the tubes in a specific order, ensuring the needle enters at a specific angle, and understanding specimen integrity in the pre-analytical phase. Phlebotomists are fundamental to the laboratory and the hospital. Patient identification at the time of the blood draw helps ensure the correct results go back to the correct patient so that the nurse and doctor can treat the patient appropriately. Each of the lab staff have their own success story or neat find that they get excited about and like to share with others. For instance, Tabby had a specimen that had a bacteria that had to be sent to the state for identification. After 3 weeks at the state, they were still unable to identify her rare find. Wanda discovered peculiar green crystals inside of white blood cells that was a first for SJMH and the pathologist both. This was indicative of liver dysfunction and has a special and unique name. There are multiple departments in the laboratory where MLTs and MLSs work: Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Immunohematology. At SJMH, we have even begun molecular microbiology, which started back in 2015. Chemistry is where they perform tests such as glucose, cholesterol, thyroid tests, and potassium. Hematology is where blood counts are evaluated for anemia and infections. Microbiology is where we test for bacteria and viruses. Immunohematology, often referred to as the Blood Bank, is where we perform compatibility testing for patients to be transfused. Although a lot of testing is now automated, the lab scientists and technicians must ensure the machines are working properly by giving regular maintenance, running quality control multiple times daily, and ensuring specimen quality and integrity. The microbiology technicians are very good at their jobs. Sometimes they know what the organism is before the instrument reads the result just based on the smell. Pseudomonas smells like grapes. Hemophilus smells like dirty feet. Proteus smells like rotten fish. Eikenella often smells like bleach. That stale odor from your armpits? Yep, that’s Corynebacterium. Hematology at SJMH is well-equipped to house students and often does multiple times per year. SJMH invested in a microscope with a teaching piece that allows two people to view in the microscope at the same time. SJMH also received a microscope with a camera and tablet attached. This allows the staff to take photos and videos of blood smears and organisms such as parasites. The laboratory is highly regulated. Specifically the blood bank is one of the most regulated areas in the entire hospital. There are more than 1800 Joint Commission Standards for the hospital. The laboratory itself has over 1200 standards. Approximately 600 of those standards are specific to just the blood bank. It is the one department that in the event of a deviance, must report directly to the FDA, which can result in very hefty fines. All of the lab plays a crucial role in patient care. We would like to give them a big thanks and celebrate them this week during National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week!

attending school, she enjoys painting, especially the liquid art technique. “My granddaughter works way too hard for someone her age and she deserves the chance to go to this program.” said her grandmother, Terri Ryder. “We have had some small donations, mostly from other family members, but are far from reaching our goal and time is running out.” A fluid art acrylic pour walkin workshop will be held on Sunday, May 5, from noon to 5 p.m., at Ember Arts in Weston. Participants may stop in between those times and select a 6x8, 8x10, or 11x14 canvas to experience this technique with. The cost to participate ranges from $10-$25, depending on the canvas size you select.
Another business, Sam’s Pizza, has agreed to donate pizza boxes so you can take your wet painting home more easily. If you’d rather not try the pour yourself, Casto and her family members have made some of their own art to sell. Stop by the shop during the fundraiser and pick one out to take home. Casto said she has been interested in becoming a lawyer for as long as she can remember, and even thinking about other career options doesn’t pique her interests nearly as much as law has done her entire life. Every aspect of law captivates her interests, and Casto is having a difficult time choosing between criminal law, family law, and the various other tracts in the field, and hopes this program can help her narrow down her
choices. If you can’t make it out to support Casto in the fundraiser you can still donate via the Facebook fundraiser: Abby’s Envision Fundraiser, Just visit www.facebook.com/ donate/2242388006001644/ You can also mail a check for tuition made out to her grandmother, Terri Ryder, 60 Craig St., Apt. 308, Weston, WV 26452. You can make an anonymous donation to a Citizen’s Bank account set up for her trip. Just stop by Citizens Bank and ask to make a deposit in the joint account of Terri Ryder and Abby Casto. When the animals see me and the other volunteers, they get so excited and their tails start wagging. They’re stuck in the kennels if nobody comes to take them out, so we could really use more volunteers.” L-UAC and the volunteers need help with a multitude of things, so there is literally something to do for everyone who wants to contribute. Poling said in addition to exercising and socializing the animals, people could just show love by petting them or giving them treats on their lunch break. They could also use assistance for things like fundraising and seeking donations from area businesses as well as helping to provide transportation for animals to get to other rescue groups and foster homes.
When animals are brought to L-UAC, they are vaccinated and wormed as soon as possible following intake, but all are up to date before adoption. The adoption fee for dogs is $70 if they have not been fixed, $30 if they have already had this completed. Cats are $60 to adopt unless they’ve already been spayed/neutered and then the fee is only $15. For animals that haven’t been fixed yet prior to finding a new home, the new owner will be given a $50 spay/neuter voucher that can be used at several participating vet clinics in and around Lewis and Upshur counties. If the person lives outside the area, a $50.00 refund will be mailed once proof is submitted to the shelter that the animal has been spayed/neutered.
Stonewall Veterinary Hospital, Inc. will be sponsoring a different animal in need of adoption each week, so please be sure to look for them in the Lewis County Community Guide and The Record Delta if you are interested in giving one of these precious pets a loving forever home. The Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility is located at 318 Mud Lick Road in Buckhannon. Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to noon. The shelter is not open to the public on any holiday where the Upshur County Court House is closed. They can also be reached at 304-472-3865.
most popular activities at state parks and forests, so making all campsites reservable on the parks website simplifies the reservation process for our guests,” Sam England, chief of the West Virginia State Parks System said. “The new, paperless process makes it easier for guests to plan a family trip filled with good times and fond memories.” “Many of our guests enjoy camping at the same park each year, so we’re excited to give them a new way to plan and enjoy their vacation.” England said. “Offering online reservations also opens up our beautiful parks and forests to a new generation of visitors, who will soon come to love a favorite park or forest of their own.” More than seven million people visit West Virginia state parks or forests each year. That number is expected to increase with the addition of online reservations. Online reservations include
the following details: All campsites and picnic shelters will be available for reservation one year in advance, beginning on the first day of the month for that month. Advance reservations for campsites are encouraged; however, walk-ins will still be welcome, pending availability. Campers arriving at the park without an advance reservation can inquire about available sites by going online, calling 1-833-WVPARKS, or stopping by a designated check-in station or park office. Existing mail-in and overthe-phone reservations have already been entered into the new system and will be honored for the 2019 season. Confirmation letters have been mailed, but guests can also confirm their reservations by calling 1-833-WVPARKS. If a cancellation is made within 60 days of a visit, a credit to-
ward a future stay will be issued. Cancellations made within one week are non-refundable. To make a reservation or explore availability for campsites, cabins and lodge rooms at any West Virginia state park or forest, visit wvstateparks.com. In addition to online reservations now being available, Justice also announced $3.5 million has been allocated to make upgrades to 16 state parks including Audra State Park. The campground upgrade projects range from bathhouse improvements to electrical improvements. In addition to Audra, other parks slated for upgrades include Babcock, Beech Fork, Blackwater Falls, Bluestone, Cabwaylingo, Camp Creek, Cedar Creek, Chief Logan, Coopers Rock, Holly River, Kanawha, Moncove Lake, Twin Falls, Tygart, and Watoga.
Local resident Bob Smith said he’s happy to see the new single lane closure at a time construction begin. allowing traffic to keep flowing “I think this will go a long through the busy interchange way to helping increase safety area. at that exit.” Smith said. “I also
think it will help speed things up getting off and on the highway.” As part of Governor Jim Justices “Roads to Prosperity” initiative, the project will be financed through general
obligation bonds. Vecellio & Grogan, of Beckley, has been awarded the $24,103,865 contract for the project.
Painting from Page 1 the sum each month has been a challenge. The program’s tuition is $2,595, and that doesn’t factor in the cost of some meals, the business-style attire she will be required to wear to the program, or optional plane tickets to and from the program. Tuition covers room and board, materials, site visits, transportation during the program, curriculum, lectures and simulations. This fundraiser is essential to assisting Casto with her goal to attend. In what free time she has left over from working two part-time jobs, participating in choir and twirling, performing miscellaneous odd jobs, and L-UAC from Page 1 kers also assists by paying for other necessary and emergency medical treatment. There are only a handful of volunteers that regularly come to assist at the shelter so they welcome anyone who would like to help. Luv 4 Animals volunteer Desiree Poling said, “What I would really love to see is more community involvement.” She said there is no obligation or schedule required to volunteer, so people can just come whenever they have time and leave when they don’t. She added, “Some people have a stigma or think it’s a bad or horrible place, but I never feel sad when I come here and always feel better when I do. Parks from Page 1 “You’ve got to love this state to market this state, and Chelsea loves this state.” Justice said. “I can’t say enough about her hard work.” “What we really hope to see from bringing all these sites online is more folks learning about our beautiful campgrounds and planning trips here.” Tourism Commissioner Chelsea Ruby said. “Allowing potential visitors to see availability online will make us much more accessible to a whole new set of campers.” Ruby noted online reservations to West Virginia parks are up 43 percent over last year. With the addition of online reservations, campers can easily select a site on their smartphones, tablets, or computers in advance of their trip and be assured it will be available when they arrive. “Camping is one of the

Wade needs a new home
This is Wade and he is available for immediate adoption at the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility. Wade has short hair, is believed to be a Saint Bernard mix and he’s about three years old. He has not been neutered yet and weighs about 70 pounds. He loves people and going for walks. Wade was originally brought to the shelter as a stray from Lewis County on April 16 and was previously adopted, but unfortunately returned as an owner surrender a week later. Although he tested well with all the other dogs at the shelter, the adopters said he didn’t get along with the neighbor’s dogs and brought him back. He is very friendly and may just be selective about other dogs, so if you have others you can bring them to meet Wade prior to adoption. If you’d like to meet Wade, please visit the L-UAC facility located on Mud Lick Road in Buckhannon. They are open Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, or you can call 304-472-3865.
