Madison Hall, Wyatt Burns, and Olivia Shiflett were recognized recently at a ceremony in Charleston for being winners of the Golden Horseshoe Award.
CHARLESTON — 223 eighth-graders from across the state, including three outstanding students from Lewis County, received recognition as Knights of the Golden Horseshoe this past Friday. This recognition honors students earning the highest achievement in knowledge of West Virginia history and culture. Robert L. Bland Middle School students Madison Hall, Wyatt Burns, and Olivia Shiflett were recognized for their achievement at the ceremony. Governor Justice joined West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Dr. Steven Paine to induct students from all 55 counties and students from the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind as Knights of the Golden Horseshoe during a ceremony at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston, W.Va. “I am just so proud of these students for earning this top honor,” Gov. Justice said. “The Golden Horseshoe stresses the importance of learning about our great state and I know these students will serve as ambassadors f o r We s t Vi rg i n i a for years to come.” The Golden Horseshoe award is considered one of the greatest honors bestowed upon students in West Virginia. “This group of incredible students continue the tradition of excellence that is highly respected in West Virginia,” Paine said. “They are the ‘all-staters’ of West Virginia history and I know they take great pride in the Mountain State.” West Virginia has administered the Golden Horseshoe test each year since 1931 and is the longest running program of its kind in the United States. The top-scoring students in each county receive the prestigious award. Each county has at least two winners. The exam tests students’ knowledge on West Virginia citizenship, civics and government, economics, geography, history and current events. This year marks the 303rd anniversary of the Golden Horseshoe tradition, which began in the early 1700s in Virginia when then-Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood saw the need for exploration of the land west of the Allegheny Mountains, most of which is now West Virginia. Spotswood organized a party of about 50 men to explore the frontier. At the end of the exploration, he presented each member of the party with a golden horseshoe. Translated from Latin, the inscription on each horseshoe read, “Thus he swears to cross the mountains.” On the other side was written, “Order of the Golden Horseshoe.” Because of this, the recipients became known as “The Knights and Ladies of the Golden Horseshoe.”

Minutemen baseball ends season with wins
By Wyatt Burns Sports correspondent
WESTON- The Lewis County High School baseball team picked up three wins to end the season. The Minutemen picked up wins over Clay, Buckhannon-Upshur and Robert C. Byrd last week. The Minutemen blew Clay County out on Tuesday the 30th by a score of 14-0. A huge 11 run fourth allowed the Minutemen to get way ahead and set up the 10-run-rule for the 5th inning. Six of Lewis County’s 12 hits came during this inning. A stellar pitching performance from Will Hunt saw him through four hitless innings and gassed eight batters. Tim Hunt came in and finished off Will Hunt’s no-hitter in the 5th, picking up a save in the process. Wednesday was the important night for five seniors, playing in their last home regular season game. This game was against Lewis County rival Buckhannon-Upshur. The underclassmen would not allow for the seniors to lose, specifically to B-U. The Minutemen were down early but a big rally in the fourth and fifth innings allowed Lewis County to win 5-4. This year’s senior baseball class includes Levi Fox, Chase Freeman, Jakob Gragg, Luke White, and PA Specialist Ayden Wyckoff. The Minutemen’s regular season wrapped up when they traveled to RCB on Thursday. The Minutemen defeated RCB 12-4. Lewis County once again was boosted by one big inning, this time a seven run 5th. Connor Johnson and Terran Allman handled the pitching duties for the Minutemen. Kole Bozic and Tim Hunts’ bats came alive, each collecting three hits in the victory. Will Hunt picked up two hits in the win. The Minutemen were scheduled to play in sectional action on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Minutemaids’ softball begin sectional play
By Wyatt Burns Sports correspondent
WESTON- The Lewis County High School softball team has been in sectional play over the past week. The ‘Maids are 4-2 over the week of post season action. The ‘Maids opened the week with a double-header at Roane County High School. The first game was a 12-4 win against Braxton County. A big eight-run fourth inning allowed the ‘Maids to apply the eight-run rule after the eighth inning of play. Abby Hartley handled the pitching duties in the game striking out eight. Lewis County hitters would not let Hartley down, and they picked up 12 hits scoring 12 runs. Morgan Riffle, Emma Cayton, Tiffany Curtis and Taytum Connor all picked up multiple hits in the win. Hartley also picked up two hits to help her own cause. The second game of Tuesday against the home Roane County squad did not go as wished. The ‘Maids dropped this game 9-1. Lewis County couldn’t get anything going while batting, only collecting five hits. The ‘Maids struggled defensively, too, allowing 14 hits and committing five errors. Lewis County came back to Weston on Wednesday and got back into the win column against Clay. The ‘Maids picked up the win by a score of 6-2. Hartley was again on the mound for Lewis. They allowed both of Clay’s runs in the first, but Hartley came back with six shutout innings and ten strikeouts. This time run support came from Payton Campbell, Bella Posey, and Zoey Henline. The ‘Maids then traveled to Herbert Hoover to play against Nicholas. Lewis County once again came out victorious, defeating Nicholas 13-6. Henline got the nod in this game and came out victorious. The ‘Maids brought their bats in this game, collecting eight hits. Errors in four consecutive innings plagued Nicholas and allowed the ‘Maids to pick up the win. Lewis County again traveled to Herbert Hoover, this time for a double header. The ‘Maids first game was against Roane County; this time the ‘Maids came out victorious 11-6. Hartley again on the mound, she threw another gem, striking out five and only allowing six hits. Posey picked up four hits, followed by Riffle with three, and Hartley picking up two. The second game of Monday night didn’t go too well. The Maids lost this game 7-0. The ‘Maids could only muster two hits. The ‘Maids allowed two costly errors that opened the game up for Herbert Hoover. The ‘Maids gave a big five run inning to begin the game that turned to ruin the evening’s fun. Cayton and Lucy Duncan picked up Lewis’ two hits.

USPS Stamp Out Hunger food drive this Saturday
WESTON – Weston and Lewis County postal customers can take a stand against hunger by donating non-perishable food items to be picked up by their letter carriers this coming Saturday, May 11. Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America collect the goodness and compassion of their postal customers, who participate in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive — the largest one-day food drive in the nation. Led by letter carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers (AFL-CIO), with help from ru-
ral letter carriers, other postal employees and other volunteers, the drive has delivered more than one billion pounds of food the past 25 years. Carriers collect non-perishable food donations left by mailboxes and in post offices and deliver them to local community food banks, pantries and shelters. Nearly 1,500 NALC branches in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands are involved. The United States Postal Service, National Association of Letter Carriers, National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, AFL-CIO, United Way, Valassis and Valpak Direct
Marketing Systems are all supporting this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive. To donate, just place a box or can of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail on the second Saturday in May. The carrier will do the rest. The food is sorted, and delivered to an area food bank or pantry, where it is available for needy families. With 42 million people facing hunger every day in America, including 13 million children, this drive is one way you can help those in your own city or town who need help.

SJMH Audiologist recommends a hearing check during May
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Diana Daugherty WESTON – May is National Better Hearing Month and Weston Audiology and the American Academy of Audiology are encouraging the public to make an appointment with an audiologist if they suspect hearing loss for themselves or any of their loved ones. Weston Audiology is a department of Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital located at Market Place Mall, off of I-79 and Route 33 in Weston. According to the National Institutes of Health NIDCD, approximately 20 percent (48 million) of American adults aged 20 to 69, have some trouble with hearing and approximately 28.8 million could benefit from the use of hearing aids. Among adults aged 70 and older with hearing loss who could benefit from hearing aids, fewer than one in three (30 percent) has ever used them. As the baby boomer population ages, more Americans are forced to face hearing health challenges. Growing numbers of younger Americans (including millennials and GenX’ers) are also reporting hearing problems. The NIH NIDCD also states that five in 10 young people listen to music or other audio too loudly and that four in 10 young people are around “dangerously loud noise during events like concerts and sports games.” Occupational noise is another factor impacting hearing in people of all ages who work outdoors, in factories, fulfillment centers, etc. “Technology has progressed extensively, and hearing aids are no longer the bulky contraptions of years past,” stated Weston Audiologist’s professional Dr. Diana Daugherty. Daugherty explained that hearing aid companies have stepped up to the plate to make “very cool” hearing aids for kids and young adults. “You can opt to buy hearing aids that are virtually undetectable, or you can buy them in a wide range of cool colors and styles. Many work with smart phones.” “Audiologists are the experts in hearing health,” Daugherty added. “Hearing aids are not always the only or recommended solution, which is why it’s important to see an audiologist to further determine the appropriate treatment.” Sometimes the cause is temporary or a symptom of another illness or disease. An audiologist will run various tests to determine the cause and will be able to recommend treatment. Some signs of hearing loss may include: Suddenly having to turn up the volume of the television, radio, or stereo and having other family members complain that the volume is too loud. Difficulty understanding people speaking to you and asking people to repeat themselves. Difficulty with phone conversations and understanding the other person. Sudden inability to hear the door bell, the dog barking, and other household sounds. People telling you that you speak too loudly. Ringing in the ears. School-aged children with hearing loss will sometimes exhibit poor school performance because they can’t understand the teacher assignments or classroom interactions. If hearing loss has been present from a young age, they often don’t recognize the loss and can’t identify the problem. “Hearing loss is a problem with people of all ages,” said Daugherty. “If you or any of your family members experience difficulty in hearing, you should make an appointment with an audiologist.” The American Academy of Audiology is the world’s largest professional organization of, by and for audiologists. The active membership of more than 12,000 is dedicated to providing quality hearing care services through professional development, education, research, and increased public awareness of hearing and balance disorders. Pat’s Chat
By Pat Ridpath Community Columnist I was hoping to share a recipe, though it is a little late in the season for making this recipe. I hesitate because the recipe is in a small, paperback book, “A Taste of the Past – RECIPES” by Phyllis Connor, a fifth edition in 2008. It looks entirely handwritten or is using a font that appears to be hand-written printing. The recipe I wanted to share with you is by Ruth Trimble, Kingsport, TN. Title of the recipe is “THE INCREDIBLE EDIBLE REDBUD.” The flower buds, blossoms and pods are all edible, and I didn’t know that. Did you? Sprinkled on salads, it is bound to turn into conversation pieces, looking delectable, adding pleasure and a tart taste. The pods can be sautéed in butter and served as a vegetable or pickled and used as a condiment like capers. The flowers can be stirred into a batter for fritters, using orange juice for part of the liquid, or the blossoms can be sautéed in butter and used as a vegetable. As you can see, I have NOT copied the recipe, but I have just let you good cooks make up your own recipe. If you want to make jelly out of the flower, just put the flowers in a jar with 2 cups of boiling water, cover and let stand 24 hours, strain and discard blossoms. Then with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice and 3 tablespoons of Sure Jell, you bring to a boil, add 2 cups of sugar, boil hard for one minute, pour into hot jelly glasses, seal with paraffin and just like that, you have redbud jelly! I am trying to get in touch with the author or the OLD TIMEY PUBLISHING CO., 1537 Abbey Court, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. If I ever get permission, I will try to get the whole recipe written down. I am continuing to write for you the 28 beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Some of them are long and I am sure that many of you don’t read it all. The question so often comes up about what Adventists believe. Through these Chats, I hope that you can see that every belief we have is based entirely on the Bible. I

live a perfect life. Under the provisions of the eternal covenant, He had to become “‘the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world’ “(John 1:29). Because “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23)—a requirement demanded by the law—God’s plan to save us from sin led inevitably to the Cross. “Christ died for our sins” (1 Corinthians 15:3). “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). He took our sins upon Himself, dying our death, in order that we might receive His righteousness and live His life. “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). In the light of the cross we see the enormity of sin and are astounded at God’s immeasurable love for us. With Paul, we exclaim, “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Galatians 6:14). JESUS CONQUERED DEATH! But the grave could not hold Him! Crucified on Friday afternoon, dead and buried toward evening, He broke the chains of death the following Sunday morning. He rose a Victor over both death and sin. He entered into the kingdom of death, “so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil” (Hebrews 2:14). Thus, He became “the firstborn from the dead” (Revelation 1:5), the One who holds “‘the keys of death and Hades[the grave]’ “ (Revelation 1:18). “‘Because I live,’ “He said, “‘you also will live’ “(John 14:19). His victory over death assures us of ours. His victory over death also guarantees the final conclusion of the conflict between good and evil. Though we still await the grand consummation of world history, Satan is a conquered foe. His final
destruction is assured. Through the life, death, and bodily resurrection of Jesus, God carried out His plan to save the doomed human race. God pardons, but it cost Him a heavy price. The cross demonstrates that God is both “just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus” (Romans 3:26). While God hates sin, He has also provided a way of escape for the sinner. In so doing, He exalted His law, which was attacked by Satan and broken by human beings and brought life out of death. The entrance of sin into the universe caused pain, grief, and death. Nevertheless, God’s matchless wisdom as seen in the plan of salvation was more than equal to the terrible emergency. For “where sin increased, grace increased all the more, so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 5:20,21). Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus we gain a better understanding of God’s character than ever before, and the vast universe of unfallen beings is drawn more closely to Him because of His great compassion for lost sinners. KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS Jesus Christ is Lord! He is the King of life, the Conqueror of death, and the Victor over sin and Satan. “Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:9 – 11). It is through Him that the redeemed of all ages will lift their voices in song before the throne of God saying: “‘Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain’ “(Revelation 5:12). For further study: John 3:16, Romans 1:4; 4:25; 8:3, 4; 2 Corinthians 5:14, 15; Colossians 2:15; 1 John 2:2; 4:10. MARANATHA!

I cautiously say spring has finally sprung in central West Virginia. And spring being here is great by me. It couldn’t get here quick enough. People are out mowing their lawns, getting their gardens ready if they have not already planted a few things. My father-in-law Don Pickens is heavily invested in onions early this garden season. I’m not sure what his plans are for later on in the garden season. He’s always coming up with something. His sweet potatoes are like the size of a football each year. I know it sounds like I’m exaggerating. I’m really not. He has quite the green thumb when it comes to gardening. I haven’t gardened much in my life. Mostly just watched or assisted other more skilled gardeners. I’ve been thinking about chestnuts lately. Do you remember picking up or trying to pick up those prickly cocoons the chestnuts came in before popping out for an orderly collection. As a child I got my . Est 6 199
am sure most of them are exactly what YOU believe, too. I just want you to know we are not a strange cult, but just plain Bible-believing Christians. Any of you are always welcome to join us in worship any Sabbath (Saturday). Number nine of the 28 beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist church is “Life, Death, and Resurrection.” The entrance of sin into the world did not take God by surprise. Before it ever happened, He saw it coming and took steps to deal with it. Jesus is “the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world” (Revelation 13:8). To combat the mystery of iniquity, God provided the mystery of the Cross. He Himself provided the response to the sin problem by sending His Son to be Emmanuel, God with us (Matthew 1:23). Although He was fully human, Jesus lived a life of perfect obedience to the divine will. Speaking of Jesus, the bible predicted, “’I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart’” (Psalm 40:8). Under constant attack by the tempter, Jesus experienced our human temptations even to the point of death. The Bible says that He was “tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15); see also Hebrews 2:18). He asked His accusers, “Can any of you prove Me guilty of sin?” Jesus repelled every one of Satan’s attacks by His life of total submission and perfect obedience to the divine will. He fulfilled the law (Matthew 5:17 – 19), demonstrating by both precept and example the richness and depth of God’s requirements. By living as a man among us, Jesus demonstrated what real humanity is like: It is totally obedient to God. WHY JESUS HAD TO DIE However, in order to fully solve the sin problem, it wasn’t enough for Jesus to
finger stabbed more than once or twice looking for those delicious nuggets. There’s quite a bit going on in Lewis County with construction beginning at the intersection of I-79 and U.S. 33. Once that project is completed it should be a lot easier to enter and exit I-79. Something else that is great by me. Lewis County Park is taking online reservations for its facilities now. That’s a great improvement for the community. You can find the link on their Facebook page. If you missed it, check out the front-page story on it in this edition of the Lewis County Community Guide. Speaking of the Lewis County Value Guide and Facebook, check us out on Facebook and give our page a like to keep up with the day to day happenings on our social media.
I’d like to congratulate Robert L. Bland Middle School students Wyatt Burns, Madison Hall and Olivia Shiflett on recently being awarded Golden Horseshow Awards in Charleston by Governor Jim Justice. If you’d like to get the full story, check out the front-page story in this edition of the Lewis County Community Guide. Wyatt Burns is our Lewis County sports writer. You can see his work in each edition of this paper. He’s a talented and busy young man. Did you know there are 12 properties listed on the National Historic register in Lewis County? I did not until recently.
The properties include Annamede in Walkersville; Jonathan M. Bennett House (Louis Bennett Library) in Weston; Jackson’s Mill State 4-H Camp Historic District; May Kraus Farm in Alum Bridge; St. Bernard Church and Cemetery in Camden; Upper Glady School in Crawford; Walkersville Covered Bridge; Weston Colored School (now serving as the Mountaineer Military Museum); Weston Downtown Historic District; Weston Downtown Residential Historic District; and the Weston State Hospital (now TALA). That’s quite a few places on the historic register, I think. The only one I’m not sure I’ve seen is Upper Glady School. I’m going to have to get down to Crawford and see if it jogs my memory. I’ll get some pictures to share in future editions of the paper.
