Oct. is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

WESTON - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Lewis County CEOs Clubs are taking this opportunity to encourage people to learn more about the importance of early detection for breast cancer. As part of this effort, the group is organizing a Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon on Wednesday, October 23, at noon at the Broad Street United Methodist Church community hall. Interested participants can call 304269-8167 to register for the luncheon. The Broad Street Church Women will be taking care of the food for the luncheon. Local obstetrician/gynecologist William Hamilton, M.D. will be the clinical speaker for the luncheon. Breast cancer survivor Janet Gould will provide the personal story of dealing with a disease that strikes one in eight women. The goal of screening tests for breast cancer is to find it before it causes symptoms (like a lump that can be felt). Breast cancers found during screening exams are more

likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are some of the most important factors in predicting the outlook of a woman with this disease. Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer help save thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests. Regular mammograms can often help find breast cancer at an early stage, when treatment is most likely to be successful. A mammogram can find breast changes that could be cancer years before physical symptoms develop. Results from many decades of research clearly show that women who have regular mammograms are more likely to have breast cancer found early, less likely to need aggressive treatment (like surgery to remove the entire breast [mastectomy] and chemotherapy), and more likely to be cured. Learning in the pumpkin patch

ALISON HARRISON/Lewis County Community Guide

By Allison Harrsion Staff Writer The Record Delta

HORNER — Lewis-Upshur Parents as Teachers spent Friday in the pumpkin patch at TJ’s Greenhouse in Horner, just between Buckhannon and Weston. Jamie Church started off the morning activities by reading a book to the children inside the tent. After reading the book, the children and parents took a stroll through the pumpkin patch and each child picked out a personal pumpkin for painting activities. Children of all ages were in attendance of the festive fall activity. Approximately 20 children participated in the pumpkin patch fun themed outing. Each month, this innovative group meets for a community-style event for the families and educators to enjoy. The vision of the organization is that all children will develop, learn, and grow to realize their full potential. SATURDAY Mostly Sunny 71/48

Parents as Teachers strives to help build strong communities, so it is only expected that the group as a whole can come together to enjoy fun learning experiences in the community. Educator and parent, Jamie Church, stated, “This event is typically a huge success with our families, they love to come out to the pumpkin patch.” Children of various ages from infancy to pre-kindergarten were seen smiling and laughing while being read to and painting their fall pumpkins. Any parent or caretaker wishing to gain more information on the group or joining can follow Lewis-Upshur Parents as Teachers on Facebook and send a message for contact information. The organization provides trained professionals who make regular personal home visits during a child’s earliest years in life, prenatal through kindergarten, to help families thrive and ensure children are healthy, safe and ready to learn.

Great job! One Shot Hunt to help hungry set at Stonewall Resort

PHOTO SUBMITTED

FRENCH CREEK — The “Governor’s One Shot Hunt” an antlerless deer hunting event that provides a source of fundraising and venison for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Hunters Helping the Hungry (HHH) program – has been scheduled for Oct. 26 at Stonewall Resort in Lewis County. “I’ve been a hunter all my life and I know our natural resources, like our deer, are phenomenal,” Gov. Jim Justice said. “There are so many people who really enjoy hunting, but the appetite for venison might not be there. So we give them this incredible alternative.” As of last year’s deer seasons, generous hunter donations of venison have topped the one-millionpound mark since the inception of the program in 1992. According to DNR’s Wildlife Resources Section, hunters have donated 26,387 deer, making up 1,003,202 pounds of venison for 1,349,660 meals. “This is a significant milestone for this worthy program, and we expect it will continue through this fall’s hunting seasons and beyond,” said DNR Director Stephen S. McDaniel. “Although DNR sponsors this program, its success depends not only upon venison donations, but also upon the monetary donations and sponsorships required to administer it. We thank everyone who contributes to this program for the benefit of our less-fortunate citizens who depend upon HHH to provide what is likely their only source of red meat during the year.” The West Virginia Department of Agriculture also plays an active

role in this program through its regulation of the processing facilities. Commissioner of Agriculture Kent Leonhardt is encouraging more hunters to participate in 2019. “Last year, hunters heard our call by donating the highest number of deer since 2013. Those donations led to an additional 32,000 meals available to West Virginia’s most needy,” said Commissioner Leonhardt. “This year we need more hunters to step up to the challenge. Help us serve even more West Virginians.” Hunters who decide to participate in the program take their deer to a participating meat

SOUTH CHARLESTON – With the opening of big game hunting seasons quickly approaching, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds successful hunters that they must field tag and electronically check in their harvest. Field tags must be completed before moving the carcass, and the tag must remain with the carcass until it is electronically checked. Hunters are no longer required to transport their harvest to a check station; they can check their game by phone at 1-844-WVCheck (1-844-982-4325), on a computer at wvhunt.com, or by visiting a license agent, with or without the animal. To check game in by phone, hunters must know their unique lifetime DNR ID number. That number will be printed on the top of the license for hunters who buy one each year. Lifetime

license holders can obtain their DNR ID number, which has already been assigned to them, by visiting wvhunt.com or a local license agent. Landowners and those who don’t need a license, such as residents under the age of 15, resident hunters who turned 65 before Jan. 1, 2012, and former Prisoners of War, also can log on to wvhunt.com or visit a license agent to obtain their number. To game check by computer, the hunter must log on to wvhunt. com. Those logging in for the first time can set up an account, get their DNR ID number if they don’t already have one, and then check in their game. When a hunter has completed the electronic game check process, a 13-digit number will be assigned that confirms the game has been checked in properly. The game check confirmation number must be written down on a field tag or a sheet of paper along with

the hunter’s name and address. This number must remain with the carcass until it is dressed for consumption. A summary of the checking requirements follows, but hunters should check the 2019-2020 Hunting and Trapping Regulations brochure for complete details. Deer: Each deer shall be electronically checked and the 13-digit confirmation number, along with the hunter’s name and address, shall be attached to the deer before it is transported beyond the county adjacent to the county in which it was killed within 72 hours from when it was killed or 24 hours from the close of the respective season, whichever comes first. Bear: Harvested bear shall be electronically checked and the 13-digit confirmation number, along with the hunter’s name and address, shall be attached

to the bear within 24 hours after the kill. Hunters also are required to submit a first premolar tooth from each black bear to the DNR by Jan. 31 of the year following the kill. Turkey: Each turkey shall be electronically checked and the 13-digit confirmation number, along with the hunter’s name and address, shall be attached to the carcass before it is skinned or transported beyond the county adjacent to the county in which it was killed, and within 72 hours from when it was killed or 24 hours from the close of the respective season, whichever comes first. Boar: Harvested boar must be electronically checked within 24 hours after kill. The 13-digit confirmation number, along with the hunter’s name and address, shall be attached to the carcass and remain with it until it is dressed for consumption.

Lewis County had 397 yards on the ground compared to 22 yards on the ground for the Bucs. The Bucs, however, put up 334 passing yards, against 50 passing yards from Lewis. Marshall Hobbs gained 152 yards on 21 carries and Dylan Wright rushed for 103 yards on nine carries. Other backs contributing to the offensive explosion included Chase Beam who carried 15 times for 86 yards, Smith who had 3

rushes for 21 yards, Isaac Probst had four carries for 21 yards, Johan Clem handled the ball once for 5 yards, Zach woody had 4 yards on one carry, and Joe Blake finished out the rushing with 5 yards on three carries. Jared Griffith was good on all his point after tries for the game. Lewis County had their big quarter in scoring in the second outing up 21 points. They scored a touchdown in the first, third and fourth quarters. The Bucs added touchdowns in the second and fourth quarters of play. Marshall Hobbs rushed twice for touchdowns. Once for a yard and the second 60 yards for the score. Chase Beam had a 7 yard scamper for a touchdown. Dylan Wright had a 3 yard touchdown run. Isaac Probst had a 10 yard TD run in the game to close out the scoring for Lewis County.

The Bucs scoring came off an 84 yard pass from Ryan Strader to Tyler Kuhn. Late in the fourth, Trenton Westfall took the ball 9 yards on a rush for a score. The Bucs kicker, Cameron Zuliani, is also a members of the Lady Bucs soccer team and was good on both of her extra point attempts. Lewis County had 21 first downs against the Bucs with 15. In total yards, Lewis County piled up 441 yards against 357 for the Bucs. Lewis County punted twice for 47 yards. B-U punted four times for 26 yards. Lewis County had six penalties for 50 yards against three flags for 22 yards against the Bucs. The Bucs next face off against University. The Minutemen will travel to North Marion this Friday evening for a big game test.

processor, where the processor grinds, packages and freezes the venison. From there, participating food banks pick up the venison and distribute it to the needy through their statewide network of 600 charitable food pantries, soup kitchens, senior centers, shelters, community centers, orphanages, missions, and churches. There is considerable interest in the program, but the DNR is restricted from using sportsmen’s license dollars to fund the program. Therefore, the DNR must rely on the generosity of concerned individuals, businesses, conservation organizations, foundations, and churches.

The HHH program is a cooperative effort that involves the DNR, hunters, meat processors, the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, Mountaineer Food Bank, Facing Hunger Foodbank, and a statewide network of more than 600 food pantries, shelters, churches, children’s homes and similar groups. For more information about the Hunters Helping the Hungry Program, including a list of participating meat processors, visit the DNR website at www.wvdnr. gov or call the DNR district office in French Creek at 304-924-6211.

Annual Caplan’s/Auxiliary Jewelry Sale Slated for October 17 at SJMH

The Theresa Snaith Hospital Auxiliary operates the Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Gift Shop which helps in funding the various projects for the Hospital. One of the major fundraisers is the annual Jewelry Sale, held in cooperation with Caplan’s Jewelry Store in Weston. This year, the sale will be held on Thursday, October 17 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the SJMH

boardroom…just in time for Christmas shopping. The Auxiliary has been providing help to the local hospital for more than 50 years. The Auxiliary was established in 1962 after women who had volunteered at Clarksburg’s United Protestant Hospital (the forerunner of the United Hospital Center) decided to provide help for their local Hospital.

Before SJMH, the hospital was called “the City Hospital” and was located on Main Avenue, in Weston. Over those many years, the group has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Hospital. Some of the larger purchases have included bariatric equipment for patients, sleeping sofas for the Special Delivery Unite, and equipment for the Dietary

Department. The group purchased automatic doors for the chemotherapy department and the orthopedic clinic. They also created a lovely garden outside of the chemotherapy clinic. The organization is always looking for new members and interested parties can call the SJMH Marketing Department at 304-269-8167 for more information.

WHEELING - Two years ago, the Department of Justice announced the revitalization and enhancement of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the centerpiece of the department’s violent crime reduction strategy. PSN is an evidence-based program proven to be effective at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them. As part of this strategy, PSN focuses enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partners with locally based prevention and reentry programs for lasting reductions in crime. Throughout the past two years, we have partnered with all levels of law enforcement, local organizations, and members of the community to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. According to FBI’s Uniform Crime Report released this week, the violent crime rate decreased for the second consecutive year, down 3.9 percent from the 2017 numbers. “The revitalized Project Safe Neighborhoods program is a major success,” said Attorney General William P. Barr. “It packs a powerful punch by combining ad-

vanced data with local leadership, further reducing violence in communities across the country and improving overall public safety. U.S. Attorneys continue to focus their enforcement efforts against the most violent criminals and work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal police. The Justice Department’s relationships across the board have never been stronger.” “PSN is a proven success. When federal, state and local partners focus on the worst offenders, you get results which have a dramatic effect on our communities. We will continue to focus on the identified “alpha” criminals who prey on our citizens,” said U.S. Attorney Bill Powell, Northern District of West Virginia. As we celebrate the twoyear anniversary of the revitalized PSN program, here are some of the highlights of our PSN actions over the past year: The U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Northern District of West Virginia works closely with local, county, and federal law enforcement partners to ensure our communities are safe by keeping firearms out of criminals’ hands and prosecuting violent offenders to the fullest extent of the law. In March 2019, Rocky Idleman was sentenced to life incarceration for firearms

and drug distribution charges. Idleman had a lengthy criminal history and was a known violent offender. Read more here: Idleman sentencing Christopher Lee Yates of Martinsburg, West Virginia, was sentenced in August 2019 to 14 years incarceration for stealing thousands of firearms parts, firearms, and ammunition from an ATF facility in Martinsburg. Learn more about his case here: Yates case In September 2019, Lamar Perdue was sentenced to more than 16 years for drug trafficking and firearms possession. Perdue traveled to West Virginia from his home in Detroit, Michigan to prey on the residents of Marion County. Read more about his case here: Perdue sentencing The Northern District of West Virginia has a strong reentry initiative, offering its reentry simulation to state and federal prisons, community members, and service organizations. The Reentry efforts also extend to offering resource fairs, job fairs, and education to those recently released from prison or currently incarcerated. The Reentry efforts are supported by organizations in the community with a common mission, such as the YWCA in Wheeling, Catholic Charities of West Virginia, The West Virginia

Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and Second Chance Technologies, to name a few. For the second consecutive year, the estimated number of violent crimes in the nation decreased when compared with the previous year’s statistics, according to FBI figures released today. In 2018, the number of violent crimes was down 3.3 percent from the 2017 number. The 2018 statistics also show the estimated rate of violent crime was 368.9 offenses per 100,000 inhabitants. The violent crime rate fell 3.9 percent when compared with the 2017 rate. These enforcement actions and partnerships are part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. The Department of Justice reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals, directing all U.S. Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement and the local community to develop effective, locally based strategies to reduce violent crime. To learn more about Project Safe Neighborhoods, go to www.justice.gov/psn.

It’s been an eventful few weeks for me in my personal life. This past weekend, my wife Rebecca and I celebrated seven year of wedded bliss. We were married Oct. 13, 2012, at the Masonic Lodge here in Weston by Pastor Dorothy Strauss. We went over to Seneca Rocks and did some hiking. We stopped at Yokum’s as we always do when we are there. We stopped in Elkins at Hiawatha’s Gift Shop. That was a cool place. We also had dinner at the Sakura Japanese Steak House there. Great food. Great service. It was a really fun day. The leaves hadn’t changed much yet when we were over there. Maybe because it’s been so dry. I’m not really sure about that. The weekend before that I went to my 35th high school class reunion in Indiana. Though I was born in Charleston, I graduated from Lincoln High School in Vincennes, Indiana, in the southern part of the state. Rebecca always “enjoys” my accent for the first few days after I get back from Indiana as I have a tendency to slip back into certain vocal dialects she finds somewhat humorous. I do have to admit that I sound a little verbally hijacked when I get back. It was nice seeing old friends and rekindling some past friendships. It was curious to see how cliques were still in place with classmates even after 35 years. Those things are really powerful I guess. I just kind of went with the flow. I will say it was odd to see so many old people when I still look like I did when I was 25… feel free to laugh here. Laugh out loud and hysterically if you’d like. If someone asks what’s so funny just say “Oh that John at the community guide is a nut.” They’ll know what you mean. The Lewis County Minutemen football team is off to a great 5-1 start this season. They certainly put a whipping on the Buccaneers Friday night. All I can say there is… Go Minutemen!!! Here’s a picture of Rebecca and I at Seneca Rocks… notice I have a pocket full of pens and notepads. Always on the job. Rebecca says she’s “used to it” now.

Shirley Jean (Stout) Nicholson passed away on October 6. It seems like obituaries are a part of many of my Chats. That is a sad thing. Shirley was Mary Ann’s age. We all grew up in Burnsville, WV, and it was a wonderful place to grow. I don’t think it has remained so wonderful. When we lived there Burnsville had two (at least) markets, a bank, a movie theater, a taxi stand, even a bus (The Blue Goose, I think it was called) that would take us to Weston and back, a couple of places to eat (or more), a laundry facility, a broom factory, a furniture store, a hardware store, a Home-Improvement business that employed several people who did carpentry, plumbing, installing appliances, (where I worked for a few months or maybe years), and other facilities that improved our small-town living. The Little Kanawha River, the hills and streams where we were free to explore without fear of danger from criminals or most animals brought us entertainment without electronic help. What animals that might have been around were more afraid of us than we were of them. Now, Burnsville doesn’t have a restaurant, I don’t think, and no grocery store or bank or taxi or many other conveniences. I do hope some people

still enjoy it, though. It is “home” to me. The REVIVAL at the Seventh-day Adventist Church here in Buckhannon is wonderful. There are only six nights, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, so after the one tonight, there will only be three next weekend. The first night was about Jesus and the Biblical prophecies from thousands of years before, that came to be just as they were predicted, even down to the fact of His birth in the tiny village of Bethlehem. There are so many genuine fulfilled prophecies that prove He is the Son of God who gave His life for each one of us. Last night we learned about how prophecies about Jesus’ Second Coming have been and are being fulfilled. Although we don’t know the exact day or hour, we are told it will be soon. Tonight it will be about the “manner” of His second coming according to the Bible. Will it be literal, or maybe a “secret” happening? I wish I could personally urge all of you to come and see. I am sure the subjects for next weekend’s meetings will be even more interesting. Each meeting lasts from 7:00 p.m. until about 8:15

to 8:30 p.m. The Methodists have developed a wonderful way to serve the community with free meals three times a week, and a Clothes Closet, and many other programs such as one that helps those who need assistance in paying utility bills and etc., programs for needs (school book bags, new baby needs, etc.). Adventists are also interested in helping in these areas, but are not as organized as the Methodists, at least not here in our Buckhannon Church. Other churches in the area also help at Parish House with the free meals, in providing, preparation and serving the meals. Adventists decided to help. Last Monday was our first time. We decided to serve cornbread and beans with onions, and desserts. Several Adventists help prepare and/or serve the meal. We sat and ate with them and got acquainted. We told them we would serve a

meal once a quarter at this point and then possibly more often in the future, perhaps once a month. About ten of us were there to help. Parish House, as their facility is called, can use volunteers in many of their activities, if any of you are interested. Just stop by and offer your help. I am attaching a picture with Nancy Walker serving the white beans, Tonja Cutright serving the brown beans, Darren Cutright serving the cornbread, Bridgett Cutright serving the onions. (These children are home-schooled so were available.) Dessert was on individual plates that folks could pick up. We all enjoyed our experience. I am also attaching a picture of one of the busiest workers at our church, Sheri-Lyn Sapp, along with the pastor’s wife, Bonnie Cutright. Church members celebrated her birthday at our Sabbath Fellowship dinner. Sheri works at WalMart but finds time to do the weekly bulletin for the church, and other activities when needed. Sheri plays the organ and piano for us on Sabbath and plays piano for other churches on Sunday and Wednesday choir practice. Maranatha

Gov. Justice Celebrates Roads to Prosperity Success

BRIDGEPORT – From a grassy hill, overlooking construction on the U.S. Navy PO 1st Class Kevin S. Rux Memorial Bridge in Bridgeport, Gov. Jim Justice and leaders with the Department of Transportation held an event today to celebrate the amount of road work that has been completed in West Virginia through Gov. Justice’s Roads To Prosperity program. “Today, we’re here to announce and celebrate some real greatness that is happening within the state of West Virginia,” Gov. Justice said. “The work that has been accomplished is unbelievable.” The Rux Memorial Bridge, which passes over Interstate 79 in Harrison County, is an the middle of a $4.2 million facelift that involves widening the bridge to more-comfortably handle traffic and replacing its deck Breast Cancer from Page 1

Here’s a selfie of me and my good friend from high school Mike Cortez. Cortez and I are big into the selfies. Mike prefers his with pretty ladies, but he had to settle for me here at the reunion festivities. Mike was a year ahead of me in school. He was a great running back. Fast and nothing but heart. It was nice seeing Mike and everyone else again.

The risks of screening as well as the potential benefits should be considered.

to significantly extend the life of the bridge. The bridge is currently scheduled to be back open to full traffic by February. It is one of nearly 1,000 Roads To Prosperity projects that have either already been completed, are currently under construction, or will be underway before the end of 2019. These projects represent more than $1.1 billion-worth of work and span more than 1,700 miles. M o n d a y, O c t . 7 2019, marked the two-year anniversary of when West Virginians went to the polls and voted, overwhelmingly, to pass the Governor’s Roads To Prosperity bond program. In 24 months since the bond referendum passed, 541 projects – worth $385.1 million and spanning 1,185 miles – have been completed through the Roads To Prosperity program. Those projects, spread across all

55 counties, include paving, bridge repairs, slip and slide repairs, and other road improvements. “If we can just think back to when this happened, 73 percent of West Virginians voted in favor of that passage,” Gov. Justice said. “It was the beginning of our commitment to try to really move the state forward and do something with our economy. It was the beginning of us going out and trying to genuinely do whatever we had to do to change an image that was unfair and move us in a direction of real goodness.” During the event, Gov. Justice announced that, in order to show the people who voted for the road bond program exactly what all the money is going toward and what projects are underway, the Division of Highways will soon begin putting up metal signs reading “Roads

-Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year. -Women age 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or have the choice to continue yearly screening. -Screening should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer. Mammograms are not perfect. They miss some

cancers. And sometimes more tests will be needed to find out if something found on a mammogram is or is not cancer. There’s also a small possibility of being diagnosed with a cancer that never would have caused any problems had it not been found during screening. It is important that women getting mammograms know what to expect and understand the benefits and limitations of screening.

To Prosperity Project” at project sites. “Our voters will see what their effort to vote in favor of this program is going toward,” Gov. Justice said. “We want people to be able to see these signs and these projects and be proud. And so, today, that’s our new sign. The first sign is going to go on this bridge, and then we’ll be putting them up throughout the state.” The Governor’s Roads To Prosperity program has also freed up more money for secondary road maintenance efforts. Since this spring alone, the state Division of Highways has completed maintenance work on 18,306 miles of West Virginia’s secondary roads. Even after making all of this progress, Gov. Justice is continuing to place a priority on finding more roads and areas that still need fixed.

AG Morrisey Urges Students to Safeguard Data CHARLESTON — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey urges college-bound students to not overlook the word “free” as they prepare to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a necessary part of qualifying for financial assistance. The Attorney General reminds students and parents that FAFSA administrators do not charge a fee associated with the student’s application. That means anyone considering the use of a fee-based entity should carefully review the benefits and services offered, including data security. “The financial aid process can be time consuming and stressful,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “Scammers recognize that and often look for such opportunities to lure consumers into handing over their personal, identifiable information. Their methods and schemes may appear legitimate. That forces consumers to be all the more vigilant.” The FAFSA application period opened Oct. 1. Students should file their application as soon as possible for state, college and scholarship programs that award aid on a first-come, first-served basis. Applicants choosing to work with a third-party entity should verify the validity of any recipient to avoid compromising sensitive information such as Social Security or Federal Student Aid identification numbers and other personally identifiable data. This will guard against scammers who may use a fake seal and other tools to pose as a government official. For instance, the FSA ID gives students access to online services and can serve as a legal signature. West Virginia students have until spring 2020 to apply for state aid. Specifically, the Promise Scholarship deadline expires March 1, and the state’s Higher Education Grant Program deadline expires April 15. Every student, even those who think they may not qualify for federal grants, should apply. Many colleges and states use FAFSA forms to award other grants and scholarships. Consumers with questions about a potential financial aid scam can contact the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-368-8808, the Eastern Panhandle Consumer Protection Office in Martinsburg at 304-267-0239 or visit the office online at www.wvago.gov.
