LEWIS COUNTY — Members of Lewis County First recently met at the Jane Lew Community Center to discuss upcoming and recent project community events and prjoects. The volunteer group recently put on a kite festival at Lewis County Park. The event was reportedly well attended, but LCF is thinking about moving it to an earlier date in the spring in hopes of windier weather to better promote kite flying. Members also discussed an offer from Rebecca Jordan Gleason to have the event staged at TALA. That location is in town, and offers a large open area to fly kites. It may also attract more participation. A recent Saturday morning clean-up of the Arnold Cemetery, also known as the Old Oak Cemetery, at the head of Main Avenue yielded positive results. Volunteers cut grass, pulled weeds and removed debris from the historic cemetery. Members reported the recent Chamber of Commerce Business after Hours event held at Thyme Bistro was quite a success. “Business after hours was a great event,” Ray Smith said. There was a good turnout. There were 70 plus in attendance.” LCF will be participating in the annual Weston Fourth of July Parade this year with a goal of distributing 1,000 American flags. It was noted that the Little Free Libraries project is in need of new or gently used children’s books. For more information on how to help with the project, check out LCF on Facebook. Efforts are being made at Whelan Field to spruce the area up and clear debris from the property. LCF member and Lewis County Commissioner Rod Wyman noted he wanted to paint the fence at the field. LCF member Bill Adler said he’d like to see the wire cables in the outfield replaced as a safety improvement. Adler also said many people don’t know the field is now open to the public, and that he has seen many families out enjoying the field. The field had been closed to the public for many years when it was the Moose Field. A few project lying ahead for the group include an Adopt a Highway cleanup scheduled for June 29 at 9 a.m. Also, the group plans on painting the baseball dugout and press box at See First on Page 2

I am a day late with this Chat. It has been a busy week. Our church honored dads Sunday, June 9, because for the next two Sunday’s (including Father’s Day) many of our church members will be attending camp meeting at the beautiful Valley Vista Adventist Center near Huttonsville. This week is called “camp pitch” when all the pastors and other members will be hard at work getting the camp-
grounds and buildings ready for several weeks of activity; Camp-meeting first and then the various age-group camps in the weeks following. To include our pastor in honoring fathers, we had our celebration yesterday. The menu was “haystacks.” Have you ever eaten a haystack? It is yummy. It consists of a bed of Fritos or corn chips, covered by beans, whole or refried, Crumbles (a vegetarian burger) or real burger if you prefer, chopped salad greens, chopped onions, tomatoes, olives, cheese, sour cream, salsa and guacamole. It has been a favorite over the years because toppings can take many forms, like maybe a little Spanish rice. Each person builds his own stack to suit his own taste. The enjoyment of church family seems greater when food is shared. Number 13 of Fundamental Beliefs is entitled The Remnant and Its Mission. Throughout history God had had a people who remained faithful to Him. However intense the apostasy, His faithful followers proclaimed His name and lived by faith in His salvation. Father’s Day is a day many families look forward to. Though its history might not go back as far as many religious or government-designated holidays, Father’s Day is rife with tradition in many households. Father’s Day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June in both the United States and Canada and also in the United Kingdom. While Father’s Day might trace its origins to the United States, the holiday is celebrated across the globe, including in Argentina, Greece, India, Singapore, and New Zealand. Fathers often receive gifts from their spouses and children on Father’s Day. What to give the dad who seemingly has it all leaves many people scratching their heads in the weeks preceding Father’s Day. People who find themselves in such situations can think outside the box and look for ways to honor their fathers this year.

The following are some unique ways to honor Dad this Father’s Day. Travel Dad may be pleasantly surprised by a stroll down Memory Lane. Plan a day trip or weekend excursion to Dad’s hometown, visiting all his old haunts, including the house he grew up in, and allow him to serve as tour guide. This can be a great way for Dad to share stories and for his family to learn a little more about the old man. Other great places to visit include Dad’s college campus or his ancestral homeland. Highlight reel In the months preceding Father’s Day, do some covert digging through family photo albums to create a “This Is Your Life” highlight reel for Dad. Go back as far as possible, even looking through Dad’s baby photos if you can find them. This might require a collaborative
effort, requiring the whole family to work together, but that can make for an enjoyable way for families to spend time together and see how Dad became the man he is today. Present the finished product at a family dinner on Father’s Day. Make a list Another unique way to honor Dad is to compile a list of the many ways you are and will always be grateful for having him as a father. Adults honoring their fathers can cite specific examples they recall from childhood and young adulthood when Dad went above and beyond or served as a sounding board or shoulder to cry on. This is a great way to honor Dad and let him know all those sacrifices and special moments are still appreciated and will never be forgotten. Father’s Day is a chance to honor Dad, and the way you choose to do so can be as unique as the man himself.

was reduced to a very minimum, a remnant, as in the time of the Flood (Genesis 7:7) or the days of Elijah (I Kings 19:18). In our own time, just before the second coming of Jesus, God again calls out a remnant people. Disobedience of God’s law has become widespread. Most people make fun of His laws and despise His offer of salvation. The Bible says that “evil men and imposters will go from bad to worse” (2 Timothy 3:13). It’s in this very time that God’s remnant are called to be “blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe” (Philippians 2:15). In the midst of a rebellious world, they are to keep God’s laws; in a time of widespread unbelief, they are to maintain the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12). As event lead toward the world’s tragic ending, the contrast between believers and skeptics will become more and more obvious. MESSAGE OF THE REMNANT God has charged His remnant to give a final message to the world and to demonstrate their faithfulness to it. As He has always warned the world before destruction in the past, so today He has commissioned

His remnant to announce to the world the imminent end of all things. The mission is outlined in the three angels’ messages of Revelation 16:6 – 12. These messages foretell a worldwide work that will be carried out among “every nation, tribe, language and people” (Revelation 14:6). The message of the remnant calls attention to the fact that the hour of God’s judgment has come. He is intervening in human history in order to bring to an end the great conflict between good and evil. This message is a call to separate from every system of error and worship God alone. At the heart of the remnant’s message is the eternal gospel. God has always had only one way for men and women to be saved: faith in His gift made available through Jesus Christ. Those who are chosen will lift high the Cross of Christ so everyone can see it and live (John 3:14 – 18). The distinctive nature of the three angels’ messages—calling attention to the widespread apostasy against the law of God, the beginning of the judgment, and the imminence of the end—is what gives the proclamation of the gospel its singular urgency and power today. The remnant is a prophetic reaping movement. God has faithful believers all over the world, members of many denominations and religions. Under the pressure of earth’s
final events, the central issues in the conflict between Christ and Satan will be seen more clearly, and the dividing line between the followers of each one will become more and more apparent. As a result, the remnant will become a nucleus around which God’s true people from all part of the world will gather (Revelation 18:1 – 4). By the time of Christ’s second coming the world will be divided into just two groups. EVERY BELIEVER A MESSENGER In these final days of earth’s history, every believer is called to become a part of God’s remnant people. Each one is called to assume the privileges and responsibilities of God’s end-time church in the world. Above all else, these people will exalt Jesus Christ and His work for salvation, demonstrating through a living faith that they have accepted that salvation. They will present to men and women everywhere the validity of God’s law—so despised by modern society— and their duty to keep it. By word and deed they will bear witness to the approaching end of human history, warning everyone, inviting everyone, pleading with everyone.
