By Tara Kennedy Editor WESTON — Many Lewis County students were unable to attend school on Tuesday, when an unexpected call from the Board of Education announced that multiple bus routes would not be transporting children for the day. Families began receiving the BOE notifications at approximately 6 a.m. and mass confusion followed as they sought clarification as to why numerous buses would not be running their regular routes, while others would proceed. According to Lewis County Schools Superintendent Dr. Robin J. Lewis, the county has a total of 35 buses and drivers, but only 16 were operating as regularly scheduled on Tuesday. Dr. Lewis explained, “We didn’t have enough drivers, 19 called off sick today.” There has been an ongoing issue regarding disputes over correct compensation for bus drivers and they did not achieve any resolution at the BOE meeting last week. Multiple attempts were made to contact bus drivers for comment, but all declined. Tuesday afternoon, Dr. Lewis issued the following statement: “Lewis County Schools had a shortage of regular and substitute drivers to cover all bus runs today. Any student who was not able to attend school due to their bus not running will have an excused absence for January 21, 2020. Lewis County Schools will be operating on a normal schedule for Wednesday, January 22. Providing a quality and sound education for all students of Lewis County remains our #1 priority. We appreciate you support in this endeavor.”

To date, the current Lewis County Assessor John Breen (Republican) has filed to run again and is presently unopposed. Current Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney Christina Flanigan (Republican) is also running unopposed, as well as William McClain (Republican) for Conservation District Supervisor. Alden Butcher, Larry Haddix and Bobby Stewart are all running as Republican candidates
for County Commission, while Ray Smith is the only Democrat candidate who has filed so far. For Sheriff, both Randall Bush and Brian McClain are running on the Democrat ticket. Robert Rinehart and Brycen Williams are running for Magistrate for Division 1, while Rick Frame and L.J. McCue are running for Magistrate for Division 2. For Board of Education, Bryson Butcher, Bruce Heater, Phyllis Hinterer, Kenny Lowther, Kenny Holden and Millie Metzgar are all running. The deadline to file for candidacy is midnight on Saturday, January 25. The filing must be received or postmarked by this time.

The Lewis County Commission discussed business at the Tuesday meeting. By Kari Conaway Staff Writer
WESTON — The Lewis County Commission met on Tuesday to discuss business in the community. The commissioners reviewed the Upshur County Commission meeting agenda and noted a Public Utilities Tax and IRP Trucks Ad Valorem Fees check for $36,699.51 from the State Auditor’s Office was received. Altice USA, Inc., who owns Suddenlink, is changing their cable prices for non-promotional video packages and video channels, sports programming, both residential and commercial, and HD DigitaLink equipment on February 1. The Commission reviewed the Lewis Gilmer E911Advisory Board minutes and annual call report for the previous year. The Commission approved for a private road at 1217 Broad Run Rd. to be renamed to Hidden Hollow Rd. due to a fork and future development, as well as a private road at 2300 Jesse Run Rd. to be renamed to Shady Acres Rd. for future development. Lewis County Commission will not meet on January 28 due to an out of town training so the next meeting will take place on February 4, 2020 at the Lewis County Courthouse.

Vaughn explained the process of turning the old Floyd Funeral Home into the Timothy Center before it became The Coffeehouse. Vaughn spoke on having compassion and an attitude of benevolence shown towards neighbors in the community. She encouraged those in attendance to get to know your neighbors, because, “How do you meet a need, if you don’t even know there is one?” Vaughn also said that life is not a competition. It is not based off how many likes on a status or how many people attend an event. “As a community, when was the last time you just looked around and said, “Who can I pour myself into,” Vaughn asked. Vaughn also talked about a time in the past when her family took in a 15-year-old, how tough it was in the beginning, but how
WESTON — The Rotary Club of Weston welcomed guest speaker Holly Vaughn, on behalf of The Coffeehouse, Weston’s newest coffee business, during last Wednesday’s meeting. Rotary member Robert Gricewich led the meeting. After reciting the Pledge ofAllegiance, reciting the four-way test, and singing the song “Smile - Sing a Song” from the Rotary Songbook, the meeting began. The club discussed speakers for the next few meetings before Rotary member Tina Cunningham introduced the speaker. Vaughn is a writer and a speaker. She is the wife of Dan Vaughn, pastor at Hope’s Point Baptist Church on MainAvenue. Vaughn is also a homeschooling mom for her 15-year-old son and daughters age four and six. Roger Dale Bright Roger Dale Bright, 65, of Jane Lew, passed away on Sunday, January 19, 2020, in Camden. He was born in Gassaway on December 7, 1954, a son of the late Ray and Lillie Riffle Bright. On December 16, 1978, just after his 24th birthday, Roger married the love of his life, Cathy Mardell Hinkle. After spending time together at Lovett’s drive in, they knew they wanted to be together forever. Roger is survived by his wife, Cathy; two children: Tabitha Dawn Bright and wife, Tonya, and Lester Dale Bright both of Jane Lew; two grandchildren: Aerial and Hailey Bright; twostep grandchildren: Ty and Jacob Leichliter; one great-grandchild, Uriah Hoover; one brother, Vincent McHenry and wife, Ruth, of North Carolina; two sisters: Linda Marsh of Doddridge County, and Doris Hinkle and husband, Dave, of Buckhannon; one sister-in-law, Judy McHenry of New York; one godson, John Henderson and wife, Ivy, of Pennsylvania; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by three brothers: Johnny, Lester and Vance McHenry; and one sister, Violet Nutter. Roger graduated from Lewis County High School. He enjoyed working on old cars and often rebuilt them for fun. Mopar’s

were his favorite and he had one for each of his children and grandchildren. Roger also enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching football. His happiest moments were spending time with his grandchildren. They were truly the light of his life. Roger’s request for cremation has been honored and a private service will be held at a later date. Vaughn talked about how the church finds different ways for outreach into the community and inspired the club to do the same. The church hosts a one-day Vacation Bible School and a ‘Truth and Treat’ Halloween event with a bonfire and chili cook-off and attends the Jackson’s Mill Jubilee. Vaughn said these events help make connections and build a community. The church also offers men and women Bible studies and even Simply Edify, an online ministry for those stuck at home. “That’s what connections are all about. It’s about growing people, helping people get through their toughest times in life, loving the unlovable,” Vaughn said. The Coffeehouse brews Aroma of the Andes coffee and will soon be selling cake doughnuts. They are open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to noon and Tuesdays from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Coffeehouse will be making a mission trip this fall to Supatá, Columbia, where the Browns have their coffee farm, to help the community. They will be taking school supplies and other necessities to the area to meet their needs. To close the meeting, Vaughn was asked to pick a ticket from the raffle. Rotary member Cunningham won the raffle but did not draw the correct card, thus leaving the money for next week’s The competition field, a 12’X12’ square containing 66 cubes and 7 towers raffle. Next week, the Rotary will hear from guest speaker Felicia Posey of the John Maxwell Team. The Rotary Club of Weston is a nonprofit organization, focused on the “Four-Way Test”: 1. Lewis County High School’s Minuteman and Marion Comet’s Nebula formed an alliance for the Elimination Tournament.
RIPLEY — Lewis County High School’s Minutemen Robotics team, along with their alliance, Nebula, a Marion Comet’s team, placed first in the VEX Robotics Competition held at Ripley High School in Ripley, WV on January 11, 2020, qualifying them to compete in the State Robotic Competition to be held at Fairmont State University March 7, 2020. The tournament consisted of 24 teams from across the state. The competition begins with qualification matches in which teams are paired for competition randomly. During the qualification matches, teams earn rankings for the final elimination tournament. Each match consists of
two alliances composed of two teams with a 15 second “autonomous” (pre-programed) period followed by one minute and forty-five second driver-controlled period. The object of the match is to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by placing cubes in towers and scoring cubes in goal zones. Going into the elimination matches, teams are ranked based on their scores in the qualifying rounds. Using these rankings, teams choose alliances for the elimination matches with the first ranked team having first selection of an alliance, and so on. The elimination tournament consists of single elimination play.
The Minutemen, who were ranked fourth going into the elimination rounds, were chosen by Nebula, who were ranked third, as an alliance for elimination play. The alliance worked together through the tournament bracket to the final round, in which they competed against an alliance formed by Ripley High School’s Rip City Beep Boop Team and the Raiders from Russell, Kentucky. The competing teams and the crowd held their breath as the officials made their final decisions on points awarded after the finals round. In the end, Minutemen and Nebula came out ahead by a mere two points, winning the final round 38-36.

This week in West Virginia history CHARLESTON – The following events happened on these dates in West Virginia history. After the fall of the Confederacy, McCausland fled the country. He returned in 1867 and spent the remainder of his life on his large farm in Mason County. Jan. 23, 1850: Raleigh County was established by an act of the Virginia General Assembly. The county’s founder, Alfred Beckley, named the county after Sir Walter Raleigh. Jan. 23, 1888: Union leader Fred Mooney was born in a log cabin on Davis Creek in Kanawha County. He was secretary-treasurer of United Mine Workers of America District 17 from 1917 to 1924 and was a radical leader in the West Virginia Mine Wars. Jan. 23, 1890: The United Mine Workers was organized at a meeting in Columbus, Ohio, with John B. Rae, a Scottish immigrant, as the first president. Just three months later, in Wheeling, UMWA District 17, encompassing most of West Virginia, held its first meeting, elected M. F. Moran as district president and immediately launched what became a struggle of more than 40 years to unionize the state’s coal mines. Jan. 24, 1968: Mary Lou Retton was born in Fairmont. She made history at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles when, at 16, she became the first American woman ever to win a gold medal in gymnastics and the first native West Virginia woman to win a gold medal in Olympic competition. Jan. 25, 1814: Francis Harrison Pierpont was born near Morgantown. On June 20, 1861, Pierpont was unanimously elected as governor of the unionist Reorganized State of Virginia, which sat at Wheeling until West Virginia entered the Union two years later. Jan. 25, 1878: Activist Lenna Lowe Yost was born in Basnettville in Marion County. She held key leadership roles in the woman’s
suffrage movement and the temperance movement. Jan. 25, 1889: Anna Johnson Gates was born in Kanawha County. The state’s first female state legislator, Gates was elected to the House of Delegates in 1922 and served a single term. Jan. 26, 1850: Wyoming County was formed by the Virginia General Assembly from a part of Logan County. Jan. 26, 1960: Burnsville High School basketball player Danny Heater scored 135 points in a varsity game against Widen, setting a national record. Heater went on to receive an academic scholarship to attend the University of Richmond. Jan. 27, 1925: Bernard L. Coffindaffer was born in Nicholas County. In the 1980s and 1990s, Coffindaffer erected clusters of crosses along the highways of West Virginia and much of the Southeast. Jan. 27. 1933: Folk artist George Connard Wolfe was born in Standard, Kanawha County. A self-trained sculptor, he made his own tools from automobile leaf springs and engine valves and worked in stone and wood. Jan. 27-28, 1998: Flat Top on the Mercer-Raleigh county line received a record snowfall of 35 inches in a 24-hour period. Jan. 28, 1902: Miners Hospital No. One opened at Welch, with a young Dr. Henry Hatfield as president. The legislature had passed a law requiring the building of state hospitals for those engaged in dangerous occupations, and eventually three hospitals were built in different sections of the state. Jan. 28, 1937: In a flood that drove a million Ohio Valley residents from their homes, the Ohio River crested at Huntington at 69.45 feet, more than 19 feet above flood stage. WESTON — For a decade, Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital has participated in Go Red For Women®. The annual national event will take place the first Friday in February. Both women and men are encouraged to wear red as a way to raise awareness of the importance of heart disease education. The statistics for heart disease in women are surprising. Many times women have atypical heart attack symptoms, but often times without any chest pain at all. Typical symptoms are commonly seen in men as well. Our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends are at risk. Heart disease and stroke causes one in three deaths among women each year – more than all cancers combined. Fortunately, that statistic can be changed because 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes. Go Red for Women encourages women to educate themselves of the risks associated with heart disease and stroke. The movement aims to inspire women to make lifestyle changes, mobilize communities and shape policies to save lives. Since the first National Wear Red Day in 2003, there have been tremendous strides in the fight against heart disease and stroke in women. Through research and education to healthy lifestyle changes, it has been found that: Nearly 90% have made at least one healthy behavior change More than one-third has lost weight More than 50% have increased their exercise Six out of 10 have changed their diets More than 40% have checked their cholesterol levels One third has talked with their doctors about developing heart health plans Today, nearly 300 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke each day
When Charles Burkhammer travelled to UPMC in Pittsburgh in January of 2018, he was in complete kidney failure and taking dialysis three times a week. His only hope for recovery at the age of 37 was a kidney transplant. But then they break the news, the wait time for a kidney transplant is a minimum of three years. Instead of waiting for a deceased donor, Charles’s younger brother Adam Burkhammer stepped forward to donate a kidney. But being a living kidney donor comes with its own set of obstacles. Extensive testing is completed to confirm the match of blood type, appropriate kidney function, and overall health of the donor. After completing the testing, Adam was confirmed a match and the successful transplant took place in June of 2018. Adam made a full recovery within weeks of surgery, but Charles was a different story. After surgery, everything was going well for Charles but that changed abruptly when the donated kidney began to fail. He then began several weeks of various treatments, including plasmapheresis and rituximab to ensure the donated kidney would function properly. After the work of the UPMC transplant team, Charles has made a full recovery. The brothers have come together to spread the word on the need for organ donors. “I was ignorant to organ donation
until we were right in the middle of it as a family, and then my eyes were opened,” Adam shared. They have identified several areas that there is a lack of information getting to the public. The first, becoming an organ donor is simple, you can choose to become a donor when applying for your driver’s license at the DMV. Secondly, organ donation does not cost the donor any money. All the expenses are put on the organ recipient, regardless if you are a living or deceased donor. It is estimated that by choosing to be an organ donor, you can save approximately eight lives with your organs and 65 lives with different tissues that can be used. Donated organs include the heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, liver, intestines, parts of your eyes, parts of your ears, and various other tissues throughout your body. All of these can be used to save or enhance the lives of others. “I know that not everyone can be a living donor, but everyone can donate their organs after passing,” said Adam. According to DonateLife.net, 113,000 people are waiting for life changing organ donation and 22 die each day because they did not get the organ they need. WESTON — Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is planning a Healthy Heart Fair taking place on February 12 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The public is invited to participate to receive a free health screening. Screenings offered at the event include bone density, blood pressure, blood glucose, height, weight and pulse oximetry. Various vendors will be in attendance, including guest speakers scheduled to begin at noon in the SJMH Boardroom. Last year, close to 50 patients participated in the event with some sobering results. “We were delighted with the turnout,” noted Cardiac Rehab Nurse Kristi Gannon. “We provided several extra screenings including one for depression. After seeing the numbers for that screening, I feel there is a great need for assistance with mental health in the area.” There were also participants who were surprised by the results. One participant saw how much he weighed that day and

Hunger Caucus: W.Va. has 270,000 people struggling with hunger each day By Crystal Good WV Press Report CHARLESTON — West Virginia has 270,000 people struggling with hunger each day. That message was delivered to the Hunger Caucus, a bipartisan group from the West Virginia House of Delegates, that met this week at the West Virginia Legislature to address food insecurity issues. Chad Morrison of the Mountaineer Foodbank offered two uncomfortable statistics, stating that 270,000 people struggle with hunger daily in West Virginia and that his organization delivered 31 million pounds of fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy and meat to 600 feeding programs. He asked the Caucus to help build infrastructure and staffing that will continue food distribution. The meeting took place on Hunger Free Day. Hunger Free Day is a day dedicated to informing legislators about the challenges and opportunities to feed the 1 in 5 children and 1 in 7 adults that are food insecure. This was the second year for the meeting. Speakers included Josh
Lohnes, WVU Food Justice Lab; Angie Kerns, Midwest Foodbank; Seth DiStefano, WV Center on Budget and Policy; Cyndi Kirkhart, Facing Hunger Foodbank; Chad Morrison, Mountaineer Foodbank; Tina Persinger, Calhoun County Family Resource Network; Darlene Propst, Loaves of Fishes Food Bank; Spencer Moss, Food and Farm Coalition; Lauren Floyd of Coda Mountain Academy; Liz Brunello, American Friends Service Committee. Delegate Lovejoy gave appreciation to Speaker Roger Hanshaw, R – Clay, and Senator Beach, D – Monongalia, who were in attendance. Angi Kerns gave an emotional testimony about the stigma of hunger based on her experience and encouraged the committee to offer people in need, “a hand up not a handout.” She asked the Caucus to speak to a diversity of people in their communities about hunger. Seth DiStefano said lawmakers have the opportunity to do a lot of things to increase food security and healthy food options for West Virginians this session. He gave insight and an overview of the federal Supplemental Food Nutrition Assistance Program, SNAP, and
its impact on West Virginia. Tina Persinger acknowledged the foresight of Delegate Lovejoy to organize the Caucus and said that, “Multi-generational poverty in West Virginia must be dealt with by allowing children to focus on the future not their stomachs.” She supported Governor Justice in his promise to provide support for hunger issues and asked that
the Caucus support initiatives for, “enough.” She said, “We want enough food.” Spencer Moss said the statewide, Food For All Coalition addresses food insecurity and food access but also policy. She said the organization’s mission is to, “Show up under the dome and support each other.” Josh Lohnes shared that the largest national lobbyist for
SNAP is Walmart. He stated that public money from the federal SNAP budget is going out of state retailers and hopes to foster a conversation around hunger as an extractive economy. He wants to encourage low income people to spend their SNAP dollars with state and local retailers. He asked the Caucus to participate in the “Snap Challenge” and spend no more than $3.67 per person

CORE breaks organ donation record; credits donors, hospital partners, focus on excellence PITTSBURGH — The Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE) announced that 2019 was a record-breaking year for saving and healing lives in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia through organ, tissue and cornea donation. CORE, the nonprofit organization that facilitates organ, tissue and cornea donation in western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Chemung County, New York, made possible 661 life-saving organ transplants in 2019 — an increase of nearly 10% over 2018 — because of the generosity of 253 organ donors, nearly 20% more donors than in the previous year. Also, a more than 4% increase in the number of tissue and cornea donors means healing and restored sight to more than 80,000 people worldwide. Solid partnerships with the 150 hospitals and seven transplant centers that CORE serves proved critical to reaching this unprecedented number of donations and transplants. In 2019, CORE also maintained performance among the top 10% of the nation’s 58 organ procurement organizations (OPOs). “While CORE takes great satisfaction in being a model for healthcare organizations nationwide, this record-breaking year is a culmination of the commitment and the energy shown by our hospital partners, our board, volunteers, staff and friends,” said Susan Stuart, president and CEO, CORE. “And we must not forget that our work is only made
possible by the selfless donors and their courageous families who make the powerful decision to give the gift of life. Our success is a celebration of our donors and their families, and an acknowledgment of their life-saving and healing gifts.” This substantial achievement comes only months after CORE was selected as a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award winner — the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive — by U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. CORE is one of only five Pennsylvania and two West Virginia organizations ever to achieve the Baldrige Award in the award’s more than 30-year history. “These successive accomplishments are proof of CORE’s commitment to change the lives of grieving donor families, brave recipients and those holding out hope for a life-saving transplant,” Stuart said. “Year after year, CORE is making substantial, life-saving contributions in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. 2019 was no different.” Throughout 2019, CORE also worked tirelessly to increase the awareness about organ donation and make it easier for people to register as organ donors. donors on their hunting and fishing license applications. Additionally, 2019 marked the first year that the Donate Life PA Act was law in Pennsylvania; this much-needed update to the state’s 1994 organ donation law, which was spearheaded by CORE, safeguards the opportunity for donation for grieving donor families. With the number of people waiting for a transplant far exceeding the organs, tissue and corneas that are available, the need is great. Nationally, nearly 113,000 people are awaiting an organ transplant.
At least 20 will die each day without receiving one, including two from CORE’s service area. For every person who donates their organs, tissue and corneas, up to 75 lives can be saved or dramatically improved. “Although 2019 was an exceptional year for donation locally, CORE also recognizes that more than 2,500 people in western Pennsylvania and West Virginia are waiting for life-saving transplants,” Stuart said. “In 2020, CORE will continue to do what we do best: Save and Heal lives through organ, tissue and

They hosted Grafton on Thursday and Roane County followed on Friday. On Thursday, the Maids hosted the Grafton Bearcats. The game stayed close all game with the Maids have the edge until the fourth quarter, but a few costly mistakes on both sides of the ball, including many fouls, cost the Maids the game. Ultimately, the Maids fell 31-32 to the Bearcats. Emma Post lead the way with 10 points, followed by Emily Talbert with 5. Friday concluded this week’s matchups for the game, with Lewis County battling the Roane County Raiders. This game was a different story for the Maids. Lewis County got out early and scored often, rarely giving up possession without a bucket or a trip to the line. The Maids kept the pressure up, refusing to allow the Raiders to get back into it. Elle Stump lead the way with 10 points, followed by Post with 7.

Lewis County got out early, thanks to great defense which turned into offense. Lewis County would go on to win 78-37. A big game from Olivia Krinov, who put up 19 points lead the way for the Maids. She was helped by Emma Cayton who had 15, and Abby Hartley who added 13 to the team effort. The Maid will have played Bridgeport at home on Tuesday and will travel to Braxton County on Thursday.

BUCKHANNON — The Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility needs help finding furever homes for Hank and Lexie. Volunteers from Luv 4 Animals and The Animal Outreach Project would also like to encourage pet owners to make accommodations for cold weather by ensuring their outdoor animals have sufficient housing and bedding. Please contact these groups on Facebook if you need assistance. Hank is a cute red and white Beagle. He is only five years old and weighs 27 pounds. Hank is already neutered and has been kept both inside and outside. He is partially house trained and is looking for a new home with no small children. Lexie is a brindle and white mixed breed dog. She is approximately one year old Lexie and has not been spayed yet, but assistance is available. Lexie was brought in by the Buckhannon City Police from Thurman Ave. She is super sweet and loves attention. Hank and Lexie, as well as many other loving cats and dogs, are available for adoption at the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility located on Mud Lick Road in Buckhannon, so stop by and find the perfect pet for your family. Adopt, don’t shop! L-UAC is always in need of volunteers if you are looking for a rewarding and worthwhile cause to assist. Donations of food and pet supplies are always welcome.
