Corhart United Steelworkers give back

By Jason Rexroad The United Steelworkers Union Local 477 at Corhart Refractories have donated to less fortunate children and families every year for as long as I can remember. I’ve been there 19 years. This year we had a great year and raised $6,650 dollars to help many families in several counties. We shop for these families ourselves. We get information from them or people who know them and do as much as we can for them. A lot of these families aren’t necessarily on a list, such as angel tree for example. There are 115 people employed on the floor at Corhart for the United Steelworkers. We find out about most of these families through coworkers and people they know of who are having a hard time right now and need help. The amount of people there gives a lot of resources. Being in a smaller town, everyone knows everyone, or at least someone who knows someone. This affects several counties. We also help donations to sceSee Corhart on Page 5

Kidnapper caught Senior Center’s after multi-county 25 Days of police pursuit Christmas winners By Tara Kennedy Editor A Buckhannon man remains jailed without bond for a kidnapping on Christmas Day that led law enforcement on a multi-county police chase from Buckhannon to Bridgeport. Officers from Lewis and Harrison joined Upshur County in the high-speed pursuit of Craig Allen Stimson, after he had reportedly abducted his eight-month-old grandchild from his family’s residence. The report said Stimson fled from police at speeds up to 100 mph with the baby lying unrestrained on the passenger seat of his car. Once he was detained, a loaded .40 caliber pistol was also recovered from the passenger seat where the baby had been, and the gun’s safety was reportedly off. According to court documents, a woman initially called for help at approximately 2:25 p.m. on December 25, when Sr. Trpr. J.S. Tonkin heard two shots fired over the phone. The caller said her 41-yearold father had fired shots at a vehicle on the property and took off with her baby. Another witness followed Stimson and kept the Communications Center apprised of their location. Cpl. Theron Caynor was the first to catch up to Stimson near the Lewis County line on Route 33 West,

Craig Stimson but he refused to stop and continued to ignore two red traffic signals along the way. Several other police cruisers joined the pursuit that progressed to Interstate 79 North, until Stimson finally got off exit 119 onto Route 50. The Clarksburg Police Department managed to deploy stop sticks at the exit, which successfully disabled Stimson’s car at the intersection of Route 50 and the Lodgeville Road in Bridgeport. When Stimson finally stopped, he exited the car with his arms raised. The accused was ordered to the ground and taken into custody without further incident. The baby was See Crime on Page 5

WESTON — The 25 Days of Christmas Raffle is the Lewis County Senior Center’s largest fundraiser of the year. Drawings were held each day during December with prizes valued each day of at least $250 or more. This year’s proceeds will be used towards matching funds for a new Meals on Wheels delivery vehicle. Over 13,000 tickets were sold this year, netting the Senior Center over $13,000. Individuals and businesses in Lewis County were very generous in donating prizes for the raffle. Staff, board SATURDAY Showers Likely 48/31

members and volunteers began selling tickets for the raffle in August. The volunteers who sold the most tickets included Betty Burkhammer, Marge Starr and Oscar Mills. On the final three days of drawing, prizes were valued at $320, $359 and $870. See the complete list of winners for each day below. The gates of heaven opened to embrace Lisa Ann Thoms, 55, of Weston, in the early morning hours on the 28th day of December 2019, as her family held her in their comforting and loving arms in the warmth of their family home after a five-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). On the 22nd day of August 1964, the Lord graced Margaret Ann (Curtis) Adams and the late Sonny Garner Thoms with this precious soul. At the age of eight, she was blessed to gain the adoration and lifelong love and support of her stepfather, Lewis Adams. Lisa was a 1982 graduate of Lewis County High School where she enjoyed her time cheering and making lifelong friends. Later in life, she vested her time and interest in Lambert’s Winery as their Sales Manager and enjoyed traveling throughout West Virginia bringing her spirit to every stop she made. Throughout her adolescence, Lisa was an avid participant in local, state, and national beauty pageants securing titles in each. She enjoyed listening to music, spending time with her friends and family, and going out to the country to take in the wilderness. Lisa especially enjoyed her daily talks with her beloved friend, Mike Woofter whom she loved dearly; always bringing warmth and a smile. Focus: A New Attitude – A New Year, 2020 By Carol Long Community Columnist

Well, it is here. We have reached 2020. I cannot get used to being in the year beginning with twenty. How do you feel? Are you excited about what your life will be like in this New Year? Do you have a new plan for your life, your family, your job, your retirement? A New Year gives us perspective as to what we might do to have new dreams, new ideas and a positive attitude to enable us to have the best New Year possible. This new year will bring us many new ideas, more politics, a new election for our leaders, a new job, maybe a new baby, a new marriage, a new home, retirement, illness, loss of family and I could go on and on. Change is a way of life no matter what year you are going into. Maybe the year 2020 is the year for a new attitude. As I look around at all the disturbances with the reactions of leaders, I wonder how much can be accomplished with our government, our businesses, our health, our world, and our families. Will we allow all the negative comments and actions deter us from making our world safer and more productive? Where will this new attitude come from? How can a new attitude make a difference in

this New Year? I have been to the dictionary again to relearn what attitude is and how it rules our lives. Attitude is a state of mind, behavior, or conduct regarding some matter as indicating opinion or purpose. Attitude is also a position of the body as suggesting some thought or feeling. To attitudinize is to take a pose for effect. Who has the attitude to take the violent approach for effect? What has happened to the attitude of behavior in this country? What can be done to find a new approach to a healthier positive attitude where we work together, share together and come together as a people who love this country? How do we want to set the example of love for one another in a country who has freedom of the mind, freedom of speech and the freedom to make the right or wrong decisions? This New Year can be a new beginning for each of us to make the effort to take a new state of mind and behavior to conduct ourselves with the attitude of purpose for being positive about our direction in life. We can be concerned but positive in the direction of our country and the leaders who have been chosen to lead us. We can have differing opinions but use them for discussion and what is best for the entire country. Our attitude is im-

portant when dealing with family, a job, volunteerism, and when we want to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others. Many folks talk about their New Year ’s resolutions. This is fine but you still need a positive attitude to accomplish the resolutions you have decided on to make your life better. We need a healthy attitude which gives us the joy, peace, love and hope that we are to celebrate for Christmas. We need a positive attitude to make our lives richer and healthier. Goals would be a better way of making decisions for a new year. We want good health. We want to be liked by our peers. We have wishes and dreams that we think about but never seem to accomplish our goal of reaching them. With a positive attitude, anything is within reach. Instead of resolutions, think of goals or how you may have purpose in your life. Think about something you really wish you could do but have never felt you

might reach that goal. Everyone needs a purpose, a goal, a wish or dream that seems out of reach. Maybe this is the year to reach a goal, a purpose or just the happiness you deserve. Life is short. However, when we set goals and work toward them, we might be surprised at the result. Maybe some will remember a statement I made in one of my columns. I sketch but have not painted a picture. I said I wanted to paint, and if Grandma Moses could paint at her age, I thought I could too. Well that goal was met in December when I joined a painting class at my church. This class was for one day only and we painted a picture of a barn with one of the popular red trucks with a Christmas tree in the back of the truck in front of the barn. There was a lot of snow in the picture also. There were thirty plus in the class and the leader was Sheri Gaudet. We had a great time, and everyone finished their paintings. I met a goal

that I had wanted to meet for several years. Now, I plan to paint a new picture often. I can paint. That was one of the most exciting things I accomplished in the year 2019. Thank you, Sheri! Sometimes we get so busy that we forget to use some of the talents and gifts that God gives us. Maybe this year, we can find more ways to schedule our time so we can do some of the things we have wanted to do for years. Think of something you really want to do and never seem to have time to do it. Make your goal to accomplish that something in the year 2020. You have 12 months to have your goal met. Maybe you want to learn how to play the piano or another instrument. You can do it. You just have to set a time to accomplish the goal. Folks make resolutions to lose weight or to begin an exercise class. If you are 60 or over, you can join the aerobics class at the Senior Center. You may join one of the several places in our community who offer exercise classes. Not only will you enjoy the classes, but you will make new friends. Anything is possible if we just take the new attitude to make it happen. I just have one more thing to be grateful for this Saturday. I went to Walmart

this morning to pick up a few things. I ran into someone I knew and stopped to talk to her as I was leaving the store. I had a small package in my hands and thought I had taken my purse out of the buggy and put it on my shoulder. When I got to my car, the purse was not there. I rushed back into the store to see if my purse had been turned in. Some kind person had turned my purse into the office. I just want to thank the person who made my day. The world is full of good honest folks who make the right decisions. I felt blessed and just wanted to share the goodness that is around us. We are at a new beginning of a new year. I pray that our attitudes will be positive, full of promise, kind to others, forgiving, less violent, and fulfills the joy, purpose, hope, love, and peace that makes us who we were meant to be. “Happy New Year” I leave you with these thoughts for the day. In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps. - Proverbs 16:9 All journeys have a secret destination of which the traveler is unaware. - Martin Buber If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain. - Dolly Parton It is never too late to be what you might have been. - George Eliot

narios such as Women’s Aid in Crisis and Ken Johnston’s The Christmas Store. This year, we were able to help nine different families with 25 kids in total. We usually shop for, and/or help in specific ways pertaining to each family’s current situation to try and help have the most impact for them as possible. It’s a group effort and a lot of heart and time goes into it, but it makes the heart full. It seems there are a lot of these scenarios happening these days and the spirit of giving and sharing has been just as wonderful these past years, and this year especially. Sometimes stores find out what we’re doing and help as well. When we were shopping one day, we found two other families that were shopping for the same reason and one older couple was trying to figure out what a certain name of a toy was and where it was located. Then it was fun to help each other shop in the store, where we just met each other shopping for other people. We have a tight group at Corhart and are especially proud of our United Steelworker brother and sisterhood. We aren’t looking for recognition but thought it would be wonderful if an article was shared about the efforts, spirit and growing cheer for the Christmas seasons we’ve encountered over the years. This year was no exception. Thank you so much. Merry Christmas to you and yours, as well!

quickly removed from the car uninjured and handed off to a family member standing nearby. Sgt. Taylor of the Buckhannon Detachment of the WV State Police commented, “This was the best possible outcome we could’ve hoped for.” Statements obtained from witnesses alleged that the family was on their way home from a Christmas dinner when Stimson began acting paranoid

and erratic. He reportedly brandished the handgun at four family members, then shoved his stepfather to the ground while the other man was holding the infant. Stimson reportedly pulled the child away from the man on the ground and tried to leave in his car. At that time, the other man attempted to use his Ford F-350 truck to block the driveway, but Stimson fired two shots at the truck and disabled it. According to the report, he then took the baby and fled the scene.

Further investigation revealed Stimson had a prior conviction in 2017 for felony malicious assault and malicious wounding for an incident involving a knife and a firearm. This conviction made Stimson a felony prohibited person in possession of a firearm. Stimson now stands accused of four counts of wanton endangerment with a firearm, kidnapping, fleeing with reckless indifference, child abuse creating risk of death, prohibited person in possession of

firearm, and prohibited person in possession of concealed firearm in Upshur County. The accused was also charged with fleeing from an officer in Harrison County. Stimson remains lodged at North Central Regional Jail. Magistrate Mike Coffman set a combined bond totaling $500,000, in addition to a $25,000 Harrison County bond. However, Stimson will be held without bond on the charge of kidnapping.

Craig Stimson surrenders to multiple police departments after kidnapping a baby and leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through three counties on Christmas Day. VFD from Page 1 Smith received the 20-Year Service Award and Firefighter Tom Foster was given the 30-Year Service Award. The honors culminated when Firefighters William Lovett and Dana

Moody were commended for their dedication with 55-Year Service Awards. Following the dinner, a group went to Weston Walmart to shop for the 19th Annual Santa Run. This year, they shopped for 22 kids in the area and delivered presents on Christmas Eve.

Looking for furever homes

By Tara Kennedy Editor

BUCKHANNON — The Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility needs help finding furever homes for Lady and Buddy. Volunteers from Luv 4 Animals and The Animal Outreach Project would also like to encourage pet owners to make accommodations for cold weather by ensuring that outdoor animals have sufficient housing and bedding. Please contact these groups on Facebook if you need assistance. Lady is a beautiful Husky/Shephard mix. She is one year old and weighs 56 pounds. Lady looks very unique with one brown eye and the other is crystal blue. She gets along well with other dogs and is a ball of energy, so Lady would love an active family. Lady has already been spayed and is only $30 to adopt. Buddy is a handsome English Redtick Coonhound. He is five years old and

weighs 50 pounds. Buddy’s owner sadly passed away, so he is very scared at the pound. Staff is working with him, but Buddy desperately needs a new couch to call home. Lady and Buddy, as well as many other loving cats and dogs, are available for adoption at the Lewis-Upshur Animal Control Facility located on Mud Lick Road in Buckhannon, so stop by and find the perfect pet for your family. Adopt, don’t shop! L-UAC is always in need of volunteers if you are looking for a rewarding and worthwhile cause to assist. Donations of food and pet supplies are always welcome. L-UAC is open Monday Buddy through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to noon, or you can call (304) 472-3865 to schedule an appointment. If you need assistance with proper animal housing, bedding or any other pet needs, please contact Luv 4 Animals or The Animal Outreach Project on Facebook.
