Welcome to the Washington County Fair! Come and enjoy the great experience of Washington County’s agriculture, its rural character, and its great people. You can take your time and enjoy hundreds of displays, shop the over 200 hundred vendors, grab a bite to eat from over 40 different types of great fair food. Check out the over 30 daily shows and judging events. The fair is a great place to catch up with old friends or just make new ones. FAIR SERVICES The First Aid Station is manned each day by a full staff of EMS personnel from all over Washington County. It is located near the Sheriff’s building under the lag pole.

Motorcycle Parking
s
It’s easy to get lost on the large and busy fairgrounds. Selecting a speciic spot in advance is a good idea in case of separation. A particular gate or building is a better place than a larger site like a grandstand or amusement ride.
Baby Comfort Stations are located in the main bathrooms in the center of the fairgrounds near the water tower. AGAIN THIS YEAR is a tent near the main bathrooms to accommodate parents and their young children. In addition to the changing station in the tent there will be rocking chairs for feeding, play area, snacks and fans.

Handicap parking is available at all ticket booth areas. If you need a ride to your car or a ride to a location on the fairgrounds contact any gate attendant or fair staff.

Washington County Fair looks at next half century Coming off of the celebration of a half-century at its current site last year and 120 years in existence, the Washington County Fair is well poised for another 50 years and beyond of being the destination for agriculture-oriented family fun, Washington County Fair Manager Mark St. Jacques said. Entertainment and food, combined with the rich display of all things agricultural in Washington County brings thousands to the fair grounds for one week each August. The entertainment is fun for the whole family, St. Jacques said. From music to motor sports something is happening at the fair from open to close each day. Check out the demolition derby, tractor pulls and a championship rodeo at the track; hot dog pig racing, dog agility and other week long attractions including H a n s e n’s Aerial Spectacular, Sylvia & the Magic Trunk and
Agricadabra. Musical acts include the Porch Pickers, Adirondack Fiddlers and Music by Bobby Dick. Check out the fair on Facebook or the website w a s h i n g t o n c o u n t y f a i r. com. “It’s just a nice country atmosphere. We don’t serve any alcohol so there’s nothing to worry about
there, it just keeps it a nice friendly atmosphere that’s the core of what the 32-member volunteer fair board wants to do,” St. Jacques said. Something fairgoers are unlikely to notice, but is crucial to the fair-going experience now and well into the future is the infrastructure – everything
from the buildings and grounds to the electricity and water supply. “That’s our biggest challenge in the next 50 years, continuing to invest in the infrastructure of the Washington County Fair,” St. Jacques said. While not as exciting and thrilling as the rides or as interesting as the multitude of agricultural displays at the fair, infrastructure is something St. Jacques said will position the Washington County Fair for success in the next 50 years and beyond. “One of the key things is we’ve been able to purchase the piece of property which is our parking lot,” St. Jacques said. Purchasing that parcel, along with any future purchases helps to ensure a critical if seldom noticed feature at the fair – plenty of parking. St. Jacques said things are going perfectly if patrons don’t notice much about their parking experience and focus on the fair. “Fairgoers won’t notice the difference, but it

First impressions are everything and St. Jacques said he wants fairgoers to even enjoy the parking lot meaning a numbering system to help people find their cars, more handicapped parking and keeping the grass mowed to make walking easier. St. Jacques said another example of the things many won’t notice are the added double footboard and kick plates in the motor sports arena bleachers. Improvements to the electrical distribution system, or new building roofs are investments fairgoers tend not to notice, but represent an investment in the future of the fair. “If we put a roof on a
building fairgoers won’t be able to tell about the $20,000 we spent putting that roof on, but those are going to be really key important things for the future,” St. Jacques said.
Fairgoers might notice the larger ticket gate to accommodate the afternoon rush and more tented areas for seating strategically located near the fair’s extensive offering of fair
food. “I don’t think we can have enough of that stuff. If people are going to spend the day walking around the fair everybody needs to take a break once in a while,” St. Jacques said.

DIRECTIONS TO THE FAIR From the Albany Area: The Washington County Fair is just 13 miles from Interstate 87. Take Interstate 87 (Adirondack Northway) to exit 14. Follow the signs for Schuylerville and Route 29 East. Take Route 29 East through Schuylerville, across the Hudson River and up the hill. The Fairgrounds will be on the left after you crest the hill. Turn left just past the Fairgrounds on the Old Schuylerville Road and follow the signs. During fair hours, there will be parking personnel to direct you to the proper parking area.

From the Glens Falls, N.Y. Area: The Washington County Fair is just 13 miles from Interstate 87. Take Interstate 87 (Adirondack Northway) to Exit 15. Stay left on the Exit 15 ramp. From the Troy, N.Y. Area: Follow Route 40 North through Schaghticoke and north to the intersection of Route 40 & Route 29. Turn left on to Route 29 and go six-tenths of a mile. Turn right on to Old Schuylerville Road and follow the signs to the parking areas. There will be parking attendants to direct you to the proper parking area.
From the Rutland, V.T. Area: Follow Route 4 for approximately 25 miles, turning left at NY-22/Broadway Ave and following for approx. 7 miles. Turn left at NY-22S Continue on NY-22 for 4.2 miles before turning right onto NY-40S and follow for 27 miles. At the traffic circle, take the first exit onto NY29/NY-40. Turn right onto Old Schuylerville Road; the fairgrounds will be on the left.
From the Bennington, V.T. Area: Follow VT-9 into New York State for 4.5 miles. Turn left at NY-7/Mapletown Road. Stay on NY-7 and turn onto NY-22N. Follow NY-22N for 23.7 miles. Turn left at NY-29W. Stay on NY-29 through the traffic circle via the 2nd exit. Turn right onto Old Schuylerville Road; the fairgrounds will be on the left. (Route 372 is closed due to construction.)

For the past 11 years, the company has provided rides for the Washington County Fair. From two-year-olds to teens to adults, said Vivona, there are rides to please one and all. This year, one of the rides will add a “green” component. The Ferris Wheel has been outfitted with an LED light display. “It uses 10 percent of the energy consumption of the old incandescent lights,” said Vivona, “and it’s even prettier.” The lights are run by a computer program, creating a light show on the giant wheel.

Washington County, but noted that some of these are changing. “People in the industry are seeing that agricultural fairs have less and less of the farming displays and events. But not at the Washington County Fair. It’s one of the best agricultural fairs around.” The company always looks forward to its Washington County week. “Last year was a very good year,” said Dominic Vivona. “I think it might have set a record.” He credits good weather for much of the success and hopes for a repeat. “We’re looking forward to another great year.” Ride tickets at the fair are $20 for a sheet of 20, but if purchased prior to August 22, the price is $8 per sheet. In addition, there are two “Ride All You Can” days when tickets are $20 (does not included admission) for an entire day’s worth of rides. Those days are Tuesday, August 23 and Sunday, August 28. The carnival’s hours are 5 to 11 p.m. on opening night, noon to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday, August 28, the closing day of the fair. Rides will be run weather permitting.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT Buffalo & Brandy
Come with Buffalo and Brandy as they transport you on a magical journey where imaginations are engaged, participation is promoted, and learning evolves. Buffalo and Brandy (aka husband and wife Ken and Mary-Ann Ferree) utilize a combination of music, rhythm, magic and theater to create a high-energy performance for children and families of all ages. Where: Family Tent Based out of Lockport, the couple When: 12:00, 3:00, and 5:00 p.m. has been traveling for more than 20 years, bringing their show to fairs, schools, libraries and malls. They dazzle audiences with their positive message through artistic expression and audience involvement. The couple offers shows including “Imaginary Magical Reading Journey,” “Rhythmsize,” and Character Development and the Arts through Music and Magic. They sing, play instruments, and interact with their audience in an upbeat and friendly way.
Murray Family Martial Arts School Murray’s Family Martial Arts School is back for a second year at the Washington County Fair and will be putting on demonstrations in the Judging Arena. Murray’s, well-known in the region for being active in doing demonstrations and helping raise money for many organizations, is led by a Black Belt and a team of assistant Black Where: Judging Arena Belt instructors. When: Sunday, noon and 2:00 p.m. Tae Kwon Do classes are held in a friendly, family environment. Certified Adult Black Belt instructors create a structured and disciplined environment, fun for all ages. Parents and children are able to work out at the same times. An unlimited class schedule gives the freedom of days and times that work best for you. The center also offers Combat Hap Ki Do, real world, practical self-defense techniques. Cardio-Kickboxing, a highimpact, aerobic workout using common kicks and punches is becoming very popular as well. There are also self-defense programs designed to accommodate small to medium sized groups focusing on awareness, prevention, and personal safety. These are available to schools, fitness centers, local businesses, or small groups of individuals. This program provides a good introduction to many martial arts techniques for those not ready to make the full commitment of training.
Hot Dog Pig Races Who can resist a bunch of squealing pigs, complete with racing silks, running around a track to earn bragging rights as the fastest pig at the fair? Hot Dog Pig Racing, one of the fair’s most popular attractions, will run all week at the track Where: Bluebird Road on Bluebird Road. When: Tuesday-Sunday Every “race” lasts 20 min12:30, 4:00, 5:30 & 7:30 p.m. utes, and features shows including the Hollywood Hog All-Star and Super Heroes. The pigs start training at just six weeks of age, said owner David Feimster. They race until they are 18 weeks old and weigh about 50 pounds. “Pigs are extremely intelligent animals to work with,” Feimster said. “It only takes a week to train them.” Even at six weeks old, the pigs learn that there is food at the end of the track, which motivates them to hurry along. As an added bonus, the show also includes the Super Hot Dog Team, a group of dachshunds dressed as hot dogs – complete with mustard. The dogs love performing, said Feimster. “As soon as their music cue hits, they get excited and start barking,” he commented. “They love it.” While you’re at the fair, don’t miss this fun-loving show that is guaranteed to be one of the more unusual sights you’ll see all week.

It’s a whole new way to learn about agriculture with Agricadabra – a unique Educational Agricultural Magic Show. Brad Matchett, an Educational Agricultural Specialist, uses passion and humor to educate and entertain. It all starts with a pre-show about 15 minWhere: Area behind Main Office utes before show time. Bounce and Ooo La La An exhilarating theatrical smorgasbord of juggling, unicycling, globe walking, equilibristics, music, mime, stupid human tricks and audience participation, the Bounce and Ooo La La show is not Where: Family Tent to be missed. When: Tuesday-Sunday, Bounce Margil, the co-founder of the nationally known Loco-Motion Circus, has 1:00, 4:00 & 6:00 p.m. Learn to Juggle: 7:00 p.m. been performing and teaching juggling, unicycling, acrobatics, equilibristics, mime and movement for more than 35 years. He has performed or taught at more than 1,200 colleges and fairs, as well as being an instructor at Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey’s Clown College in 1976. Bounce has been seen on ABC’s Wide World of Sports from the Montreal Olympics and on the Today Show. For the past 10 years, he and his wife Karen (“Ooo La La”) have been performing and teaching Juggling in the schools in the Florida Keys. Karen Grant Margil, aka “Ooo La La” has been a performer since the age of six. She studied theatre, dance, mime, voice and circus skills in Atlanta, Boston and London. Karen has performed at theaters around the U.S., and in her own internationally acclaimed one-woman show, The White Mule Cirqus, and was a member of the Loco-Motion Vaudeville for two years. She designs the costumes, sets and many of the props used in their show. Don’t miss the “Learn to Juggle” demonstration at 7 p.m. Everyone can learn, says Bounce. Bob Smith & Reindeer
Bob Smith had never given much thought to reindeer until Christmas 1997, when he saw his first one at the Agway store in Ballston Spa. “I fell in love,” he remembers, and on January 10, 1998, he bought his first two of the iconic creatures. Since acquiring his first reindeer back in 1998, he has shared them with the public at the Washington County Fair. He also exhibits them at Where: FFA Farmland the Saratoga County Fair, Greenwich’s Whipple City When: Tuesday-Sunday, all day Festival, and throughout the Christmas season. Reindeer, which are similar to caribou, are part of the deer family. “They’re fascinating animals,” says Smith, who notes that they are actually considered draft animals. They are most common in the Arctic regions of Europe and Asia and have been found in North America for the last century or so. Smith’s herd at his Ballston Spa home has been as large as 18, but now numbers eight. This year he expects to bring two or three females to the fair, where you might see him walking them around on a leash. While they can be petted, he cautions that they’re not terribly keen on being touched, so he doesn’t force them to accept petting if they don’t want to. Bob Smith’s exhibit will also feature photos and informational material. He is always happy to answer questions and talk about his reindeer, so be sure to stop and visit.

Buffalo Barfield’s Old-Time Country Music Show Following in the steps of the great traditional country music shows like the Grand Ole Opry, Gregg “Buffalo” Barfield and his wife Michele (aka “Miss Bumadean”) have created one of the most unique and entertaining comedy/variety music shows in the industry today. Singer/songwriter Gregg is a multi-instrumentalist, storyteller and country comedian who plays guitar, mandolin, harmonica, spoons, Cajun Where: Caboose Area accordion and zydeco rub board. For four years, they worked at the Alabama Theater and Restaurant at Myrtle Beach in South Carolina. With a dynamic musical blend of old and new country classics, bluegrass, old-time gospel, and rhythm and blues, Buffalo Barfield’s Old-Time Country Music Show will delight your musical senses and tickle your funny bone with down-home comedy from “Possum Holler USA.”
Sylvia & The Magic Trunk
While most young children are merely entertained by puppets and ventriloquists, at age five, Sylvia Markson was already thinking about performing herself. Influenced by Sesame Street, Paul Winchell and Shari Lewis, a five-year-old Sylvia asked her parents for her first vent figure (the preferred name for ventriloquist dummy). Sylvia never lost her love of the art form, and today is a talented puppet master and ventriloquist. Now based in the Albany area, she tours throughout the Northeast with the Magic Trunk, a well-traveled box inhabited by a delightful bunch of quick-witted puppets that she magically brings to life through ventriloquism. Her cast of characters includes Chito, a wise-cracking Latino opossum; an outrageous southern bird who loves to steal the show; a Genie who lives in a bottle; a talking picture; and many more surprises. Whether Sylvia is at fairs, schools, corporate shows or other venues, the young and young at heart are treated to a show where they can believe that a puppet can truly talk.
Puddles the Clown Children attending the Washington County Fair will be delighted to find that Puddles the Clown will once again be doing her extraordinary face painting. “It was very popular last year,” she remembers. “I’ll be doing it all week.” Since first performing as a clown a couple years ago, Where: Building 34 Debbie Bartolucci has thrown herself headlong into clown culture. In the fall of 2010, she took an advanced course in GE Picnic Pavilion When: Tuesday-Sunday, Clowning at Hudson Valley Community College. She also went to “Clown Fest,” a major convention in New Jersey. In noon-4:00 p.m. January 2011, Debbie attended the “Clown Jamboree” in Mystic, Connecticut, where she took a day-long workshop in face painting. She’s also kept busy with appearances at birthday parties, conventions, weddings and events like the Victorian Stroll in Saratoga Springs. Debbie is a member of the Electric City Clowns, a “Clown Alley” out of Schenectady that is one of the largest in the country. When she’s not clowning, Debbie, a native of Easton, teaches home and career skills at Schuylerville High School. She looks forward to returning the fair and doing some great face painting for all the kids in attendance.

Hansen’s Spectacular Acrobatic Sensations When the Hansen family goes out on the road, it’s not the usual family road trip. With five different thrill acts, this family of daredevils keeps audiences at the edge of their seats with acrobatic roller Where: Broadway near skating, aerial feats and much Community Living Bldg. #28 more. When: Tuesday-Friday, Shane Hansen and his wife 3:00 & 7:00 p.m., Alecia are acrobatic veterans, Saturday & Sunday, bringing their lifetime of skills to the act. Their show opens with 1:00, 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. an exciting roller skating performance, which includes tricks done solely on a six foot diameter platform suspended six feet in the air. Even their young daughters perform. Seven-year-old Olivia – one of the youngest aerial performers in the country – does her own aerial act. At age five, Madison is already part of the show, performing with her father and sister as part of the trampoline act. Shane brings a juggling component to the show, which wraps up with Alecia’s trademark “Cloud Swing,” in which she does stunts over the audience while suspended 30 feet in the air. The Hansens started performing at fairs in 1999, and they now tour nine to 10 months a year, traveling approximately 35,000 miles. MUSIC Smokey Greene
Smokey Greene, known as “The Friendly Voice” of local country music, was already 30 years old when the Washington County Fair first moved to the current fairgrounds in Easton. He’ll be back on stage again Where: Entertainment Tent this year, celebrating more When: Monday, 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. than 60 years of performances in upstate New York. As a local disc jockey in the 1950s, he introduced the Glens Falls area to bluegrass music, and in 1972, he put on the region’s first Bluegrass Festival. Over the years, Greene has performed with the likes of Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Tex Ritter. Greene was born in Tinmouth, Vt. in 1930, and his family traveled the logging camps, working and often playing music for the loggers. That led him into a lifetime of music. While he’s enjoyed it all, he said his best memories are recent ones, working with young musicians. “Something that makes me feel real good is having had the chance these past ten years to work with a lot of young talent,” he said in a post on his website. “When you stand on stage with two or three musicians that are not even half your age, you get the feeling that your music will never die because there will be someone coming along to carry it on.”
The Elderly Brothers What would a county fair be without some barbershop harmony? Those who have seen “The Elderly Brothers” know that while they bring the old-time a capella feel to the fair, they are a lot more than just another barbershop quartet singing four-part harmonies. First of all, Whit Richmond, Jay VanVranken, Larry Wilbur and Rich Gervais all have too much energy to be tied to a stage performance. Instead, they stroll the grounds in the afternoon and finally end their day with a 6 p.m. grand finale on the Front Porch Stage. The group is there every day from Tuesday Where: Front Porch Stage/Walking around through Saturday. When: Tuesday-Sunday, 6 p.m. As members of the Racing City Chorus, they have competed all over the country and as well as performed in Europe. The quartet came together as a group about six years ago. They had known each other, but performed in different quartets until singing together one night at a post-concert event. The blend worked and they stayed together. Their musical tastes start in the 1940s and 1950s, but move toward the present as well. You may hear The Elderly Brothers singing “Bye, Bye Love,” “Dream,” or even “Can You Feel the Love” from the “Lion King” and “The Longest Time” by Billy Joel. If you’ve ever sung barbershop harmony or just love to sing, don’t be shy – people are welcome to step in and sing harmony with the quartet as they stroll the fairgrounds.
The Hand Picked Band Although the Hand Picked Band has only been together in its current form for about six months, it’s actually the reincarnation of a band that was formed back in 1982 and experienced significant success. Composed of Tom Burke on drums Where: Entertainment Tent and vocals, Jeff Durkee on bass and When: Tuesday, 6:00 & 8:00 p.m. lead vocals, and Glenn Pratt on lead guitar and vocals, the Hand Picked Band plays old country, some new country, classic rock and 50’s era music. The band is based out of Hudson Falls. In 1986, the original band (with Burke and Pratt) won a contest sponsored by WGNA. They earned a trip to Nashville, where they appeared on the television show “You Can Be a Star.” In 1989, Burke was named WVNR’s Male Vocalist of the Year, and was runner-up for the Vermont station’s Entertainer of the Year award. These days, “we’re just doing it because we want to,” said Burke. “We just want to get in the groove where we have some fun.”

The Porch Pickers
An informal group, the Porch Pickers are an assembly of local musicians from the Hudson Falls area who get together once a week to play country and bluegrass music. The group started out with just five players, but at times, there might be up to 80 people getting together to play instruments ranging from guitars, mandolins, banjos, dobros, and the occasional saw player. All ages are represented in the
Where: Caboose Stage When: Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.; Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. group, which has musicians ages 10 to 80. One fascinating thing about this group is that it’s different from year to year. In fact, the musicians playing on Tuesday night might be different from those playing on Wednesday. Both nights will feature old-time country, folk and bluegrass music in a jam setting, played by amateur musicians just out there having fun.
Adirondack Fiddlers
A signature attraction at the Washington County Fair, the Adirondack Fiddlers have been playing together since 1978 when a group of fidWhere: Entertainment Tent dlers came together for music and friendWhen: Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. ship. The gatherings became so popular that the group incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1989, and now meets monthly to promote the art of old-time fiddling and related dancing. At this year’s fair, the Connor Family will be joining the Adirondack Fiddlers in their performance. “They’re very talented,” said Dorcas Baker, a member of the organization. The group is open to anyone who is interested in the music, whether or not they can play a fiddle, says Baker. Meetings/jam sessions are held from 12 to 5 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month from September to June, at the American Legion Hall in Schuylerville. Members come from as far away as the Capital District, the Glens Falls region, Washington County and western Vermont. The Adirondack Fiddlers will also play at the Vermont State Fair on Sept. 7, and are a familiar sight at town concerts and festivals throughout the region.
Bobby Dick “Sings the Great American Jukebox” Bobby Dick’s extensive musical career with his band the Sundowners has seen him play in places like the Copacabana and the Hollywood Bowl, opening for the likes of the Rolling Stones, Tina Turner and Jimi Hendrix. In 2011, the Brooklyn-born musician launched his new solo act Bobby Dick “Sings the Great American Jukebox.” “It’s not just an oldies show,” says Bobby. His music selections range from the 1960s up to current music. Now unencumbered by his bass guitar, he comments, this solo show gives him a better opportunity to relate to the audience. “It’s really an adventure for me,” he says. “I can’t believe how much fun I’m having with it.” His wife, DJ Susie Q, sometimes jumps in, singing harmonies. Bobby recently took his “Great American Jukebox” show to Scottsdale, Arizona, Delray, Florida, and Boston Harbor, where he got rave reviews. He looks forward to returning to the Washington County Fair, where he hopes to see many of his long-time fans. Look for a high-energy, danceable show from this perennial favorite.

The Dry Town Drifters
Expect some good old foot-stompin’ hard-drivin’ country music when the Dry Town Drifters hit the stage! Hailing from Argyle, the Dry Town Drifters perform vintage country music throughout the upstate New York region. The band sticks to the classics, with a repertoire that includes country hits from artists such as Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Chris LeDoux, and many others. Band members include Where: Entertainment Tent Aaron Hahn on guitar and lead When: Saturday, 6:00 & 8:00 p.m. vocals; Rich Stiles on drums and vocals; Marty Guidon on lead guitar and vocals; and Dick Winchell on bass. This group of seasoned musicians first came together in October 2010, at a benefit for the Double L Stable equine rescue in Arygle. “Aaron Hahn and I put the band together,” said drummer Rich Stiles. In addition to being a musician, Hahn is also a former rodeo bareback rider. What started as an “informal hobby” of playing music around the campfire grew into a full-fledged band. “We’re horse people, and we wanted to do a more authentic type of cowboy music” than today’s contemporary country music, he commented. In addition to the classics, the band is working on some original songs as well. The Dry Town Drifters played opening night at Painted Pony Rodeo this year, performed an additional date in August, and will play at the rodeo’s closing on Labor Day weekend. The band plans to have a CD out in 2012. They can be found on Facebook.
Harold Ford & The Cash Band
With his eerie unmistakable resemblance in looks and sound to the late Johnny Cash, Harold Ford’s tribute to the legendary singer is a show not to be missed. “It is with great reverence for Johnny Cash that I am inspired to continue his music and keep his torch burning,” said Ford. At the fair, he will perform many of Johnny’s songs, Where: Entertainment Tent which are still extremely influential in the world. When: Sunday, 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. As June Carter, Laura Lucy embodies the spirit of . June with her captivating presence and light-hearted playful nature. The endearing harmonies of Johnny and June are recreated through Harold Ford and Laura Lucy. You’ll hear favorites such as “Guitar Pickin’ Man,” “Jackson,” and others come alive again. Harold Ford is accompanied by his band, The Cash Band, which consists of a highly accomplished group of musicians. Johnny’s unique lead guitar sound, originally played by Classic Luther Perkins, is recreated by Sten Isachsen. Mitch Throop performs in traditional Tennessee Three style with his energetic slap rhythm on stand-up bass. Peter Maine holds the essence of W.S. Holland (Johnny’s drummer for more than 30 years) in his hands as he drives the beat. Les Wheeler provides rhythm guitar as well as harmonica and an occasional 12-string guitar, to encompass the sounds of Johnny’s later years.
True Grass
Back for the fourth year in a row, the members of the Washington County-based “True Grass” have been playing music together for more than 30 years as members of the New Covenant Community Where: Front Porch Stage Church. When: Sunday, 8:00 p.m. Drawing from bluegrass and gospel influences such as Tony Rice, New Grass Revival and Blue Highway, True Grass weaves in multi-part harmonies, fast leads, fresh songwriting and a heart-felt gospel message tied together by a common faith and love for bluegrass music. Band members include Martin Macica of Macica Mandolins in Schuylerville on mandolin; David Ashdown on guitar and Dobro guitar; Bonnie Ashdown on fiddle; and Wayne Ashdown on guitar. DANCING
Hill Country Cloggers Since their founding in 1988, the Hill Country Cloggers have entertained at the Washington County Fair. Back then, the group had just eight members; now, more than 20 dancers will perform on Sunday. With members ranging in age from five to 91 years old, this group of men and women with very fast feet have performed all over the Capital District at county fairs, nursing homes and many other events. Traditionally, cloggers danced to bluegrass music, and still do today. But they have added many other kinds of music including rock, pop, country

western, oldies, Irish and more to their dance repertoire. To get their distinct percussive sound when they dance, cloggers wear a special double-plated jingle tap with a buck toe on their shoes. This insures they will make as much noise as possible! The Hill Country Cloggers are always looking for new members. They start classes for beginners every September in Hoosick Falls and Brunswick. Country Western Dance Instructors’ Forum There will be some serious boot scootin’ and two stepping on Sunday afternoon when the Country Western Dance Instructors’ Forum performs a demonstration at the fair. Up to 10 dance instructors and 80 students will be on stage to dance to popular songs such “Big Blue Night,” “Casanova Cowboy, and “Sexy Tractor.” While most of the dancing will be done by the instructors and students, “anybody that knows the dances can get up and join us,” said instructor Ginny Allen. During the demon-
stration, there will be Where: Judging Arena one dance taught for When: Sunday, 3 p.m. audience members who wish to give it a try. The instructors come from all over the region. Their hallmark is an exciting session with simple and complex dances mixed together. It’s a great way to star the fair’s Sunday afternoon dance sessions.
TGIF & Tony’s Toesters Line Dancers Fair-goers will have an opportunity to try their hand (or feet) at line dancing on Saturday, when veteran dance instructor Tony Marcantonio brings some of his students and teams up with instructor Ginny Allen to teach and demonstrate the various styles of line dancing. “We want to introduce line dancing to people who have no idea what it is,” said Allen. “These days, a lot of it isn’t to country music. “We’re trying to show a balance of what is out there.” Allen has been teaching line dancing for more than 20

4-H youth, fair go hand in hand As visible as the livestock, rides and tractor pulls are at the fair, youth and 4-H are even more visible. N e a rl y 1,000 local kids participate in the fair in some form or another, many through various 4-H clubs and programs. “Our goal is to encourage all youth, not just 4-H members, to take part in t h e f a i r, ” f a i r y o u t h superintendent C h r y s Nestle said. “There are a number of opportunities that exist for youth at the fair from volunteering in the food both and animal barns to demonstrations and public pre-
sentations.” Nestle, who participated in the fair when she was a child, said kids have been playing an active role at the fair for decades. Some volunteer in the youth building, others help take care of animals, and some even take on leadership roles in areas such as the f o o d booth. T h e 4-H Food Booth h a s been a p a r t of the fair
since organizers began holding the event at its current location more
than a half century ago. So popular is its food that it usually requires at least eight to ten, including a few adults, to operate. Throw in the ice cream booth, and you need at least another four members to keep all the spectators happy. The task of handing people their food, giving patrons their change, and answering customer’s questions often falls on the kids. And that’s in addition to caring for their animals. A sizable minority stays at the fair all week and sleeps in the 4-H dormitories or stays in campers caring for their animals while their parents tend to their duties at home on the farm.
“ I f they have a larger animal here, it can be v e r y hard to b r e a k a w a y, ” Nestle said. That doesn’t m e a n , however t h a t t h e r e aren’t plenty of opportunities to have fun. There are all sorts of exhibitions of projects and youth showing activities. “There are public demonstrations where they show people how to do something, like make lemonade from lemons or teach people about different breeds of cattle,” Nestle said. She said there are three mission mandates for 4-H: healthy living, citizen-

Almost every 4-H event encompasses at least one, if not more, of these topics, particularly the latter. “Nationally, we’re really seeing a push for greater emphasis on science, engineering and technology,” Nestle said. “The technology piece has become more involved.” As an example, Nestle pointed out orienteering programs where students learned how to use a map, compass and topographic map to navigate terrain. Today, the program includes the use of GPS. Also with animals, developments in science have changed the way we view animal nutrition and the treatment of certain diseases, some of which have evolved. “Things have changed and the programs have evolved to reflect those changes,” Nestle said. O n e thing that h a s n ’ t
changed is the judging system 4-H uses, called the Danish system, during presentations and exhibits. T h e Danish system is used in youth d i v i sions and takes into consideration the participants age and experience when determining
a score, allowing youth to experience growth and see how they’ve progressed against peers. That means more than one kid can earn a blue ribbon, the highest allotted. But that doesn’t mean it’s any less disappointing when you don’t get that ribbon. “The toughest pill to swallow is when the judge doesn’t like your exhibit as much as you do,” Nestle said, adding that it does help kids know where they stand though. Besides the aforementioned food booths, Nestle
said some of the most popular 4-H attractions include the 4-H building which contains a number of youth exhibits, and the youth livestock and horse barns which feature kids’ animals only. Despite the fair’s popularity, Nestle was quick to point out that its only one week of fun and learning out of a whole years worth. “It’s not the end all to the 4-H experience. There’s the other 51 weeks of the year that add to their experience as well.”

UPPER HUDSON MAPLE PRODUCERS
The Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association sugarhouse located at East End Drive in front of the County Bounty Building at the Washington County Fair. It was built to educate the public about maple syrup and maple products and promote the region as a top maple producing area. The sugarhouse is open every day of the fair and is staffed by volunteer members of the Association. There is always someone on hand to talk about the process of making maple syrup and answer any questions that visitors have about the equipment on display. Visitors will be able to purchase maple syrup and any number of other maple products, including: maple milkshakes, maple donuts, maple cream, maple sugar candy, maple cotton candy, soft ice cream, coffee, maple fudge, maple coated nuts and much, much more. Maple cooking demonstrations will be happening throughout the week. With picnic tables and maple shade trees, the Upper Hudson Maple Producers Association Sugarhouse is a great place to stop for a snack and a rest!

Pure maple syrup is sold by grades established by the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. It is graded by color and lavor. The difference between grades is a matter of taste preference—not quality. New york grade a Light amber A very light, amber colored syrup with a mild, delicate maple taste. New york grade a Medium amber A medium amber colored syrup with a moderate, fuller maple flavor. New york grade a dark amber The darkest of the three Grade A classifications. This syrup has a strong, robust maple flavor. New york Extra dark for Cooking A very dark color and very strong maple flavor, considered excellent for cooking or flavoring.
Yields 24 bars Maple short-crust 3/4 cup Butter - Softened 1/3 cup Pure NYS Maple Syrup 1/2 tsp Vanilla Extract 2 Cups Flour 1/2 tsp Salt
Cheesecake 1 1b (two 8 oz pkg.) Cream Cheese, softened 1/2 cup Sour Cream 2 Eggs 3/4 cup Pure NYS Maple Syrup 1 tsp Vanilla Extract 1 tsp Lemon Juice 2 cups Chocolate Chips, melted 8 oz jar Pure NYS Maple Cream Preheat oven to 400°F. Prepare Maple Short-crust: Cream butter. Beat in maple syrup and vanilla. Add lour and salt and blend. Press into 9”x13” pan. To assemble cheesecake pour melted chocolate over crust, spread with about 3/4 of the jar of maple cream,
and set aside. Beat cream cheese, scraping sides of bowl, until light and completely smooth. Beat in sour cream, then eggs (one at a time). Gradually beat in maple syrup followed by vanilla and lemon juice. Pour over chocolate. Bake 15 minutes at 400°F, then reduce heat to 350°F and continue to bake for 30 minutes. Cool and chill. Drizzle with the remaining maple cream and some melted chocolate before cutting bars. Serve with fresh whipped cream.

Fiber Fest to be held in September More than 120 vendors are expected at the third annual Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival, which will be hosted by the Washington County Fairgrounds Sept. 24 and 25. The event will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The festival has grown rapidly since starting in 2009 and is designed for both beginning and experienced fiber enthusiasts. There will be a wide variety of workshops both days, including a number designed specifically for children. In addition, Puddles the Clown will be there with face painting and balloons. There will be fleece, yarn and roving, a sheep-shearing show, a

FARM MUSEUM & SCHOOLHOUSE Tucked away in a quiet corner of the Washington County Fairgrounds is a small complex of buildings that serves as a time capsule of Washington County’s history. The Farm Museum and Schoolhouse are well worth the visit however, for a glimpse of life in the county during simpler times. This year, the Perkins Hollow schoolhouse is celebrating its new recognition as a “Landmark Schoolhouse” as designated by the Country School Association of America. The public dedication of the historic marker took place on May 7, 2011. According to the Farm Museum’s Education Director Joan Prouty, the “Landmark” designation requires that the schoolhouse building be either restored or in original condition. “Ours is original,” she said. “We still have the original clock, the original teacher and student desks, and even the original hand pointer, which were used when it was a school in Perkins Hollow, Salem. It’s a gem.” The school, which was used from 1853 to 1910 on the Beaty farm, was on the site of what is now the Chambers farm, Prouty noted. Visitors are welcome to explore the old schoolhouse and sit in the rustic desks. During the fair, volunteers are on hand to answer questions about the school and its ar tifacts. Some of the volunteers are from the Beaty family, whose ancestors attended the school. The Beaty family donated the schoolhouse and its contents to the fair in 1977. Over at the Farm Museum,
historic Washington County barns will be the focus. “We’ll be featuring some of the tools used to construct barns, along with a photo wall of various styles of barns found in the county,” said Prouty. While some of these barns are still standing, other distinctive barns that will be depicted are now gone. The museum will also be featuring a Christmas theme, showing how people would have prepared for the holiday during the early 1900s. “We’ll have toys and gifts that people would have received back then,” she said. Throughout the week, the Farm Museum will have various demonstrations including quiltmaking, chair caning, spinning, butter making and corn grinding. An Egg Display will showcase the museum’s early mechanical Egg Grader, which will be demonstrated daily as it sorts eggs by size. “We try to feature something different every each year,” said Prouty. The Farm Museum and Schoolhouse are open not only during the Washington County Fair, but also during other events that use the fairgrounds. In addition, said Prouty, the complex can be opened for group tours on request. “We do welcome groups,” she noted. 18th annual ‘Run at the Fair’ 5-mile race Monday, Aug. 22 The ‘Run at the Fair’ returns for its 18th year in 2011. Race founder and organizer John Imhof said he was looking for a good, quality race that didn’t interfere with his National Guard weekends when he came up with the race in 1993 and it has grown in popularity since. “I started it because there was never a race mid-week,” he said. “It’s a race for all abilities and it’s got the greatest bunch of (runners) year after year,” Imhof said. Because it’s midweek the lead up to the race sometimes looks unusual. “Some people show up in a coat and tie and change in the parking lot,” Imhof said, adding many people who run the fair race leave work just a bit early to run in the five-mile, not -kilometer, race. However they go about it, upwards of 100 people come out for the race – everyone from soon-to-be high school cross country racers to fitness runners and others. A number of things set the race apart from others including the fact it is both a cross country and road race, has the sweetest of all race finishes and has bragging rights on the best t-shirt in area racing. Imhof said the race start/finish line is at the sponsor Ice Cream Man but the course then around the fields of the fair grounds before moving back out onto the roads for five miles of race action. The race ends at another unique feature, the Ice Cream Man (the other sponsor) where runners get to indulge their sweet tooth with free ice cream at the finish line. Ice cream has been an end point treat since the race’s
inception. Long before studies showed chocolate milk was a great post-race recovery tool, this race sponsor was handing out this frozen dairy treat. The evening race, it starts at 6 p.m., features a wicking shirt which the first 100 entrants receive; another feature fans of the race have come to expect. “We have always given out nice shirt, high quality, they’re really good shirts,” he said. The ‘Run at the Fair’ always takes place the first night of the fair which allows participants plenty of time to come back and enjoy the night with the free pass they receive from entering. The race fee is $25 with the first 100 racers receiving the shirts, although advanced registration does come with a reduced entrance fee. Should they choose, racers can stay and enjoy the first night as shower and restroom facilities are available. “It’s a small, friendly race, people like it…you could call it a collegial atmosphere,” Imhof said. Adding to the friendly atmosphere are the helpers Imhof gets to operate the race. “My mom, Carol Imhof, is a tremendous help, she does a lot,” Imhof said. In the past, when they were younger his kids helped out but as they have gained responsibilities of their own, Imhof said who can show up to help does so. “They’re very efficient, my family has always helped when they’re around,” he said. Graham noted that professional cowboys from around the country will compete in the seven standard events of bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping and bull riding. “We’ve had standing room only the past few years,” she commented. At noon on Tuesday, local youth will compete in rodeo events in the arena. Painted Pony Rodeo, located in Lake Luzerne, hosts the oldest continuous rodeo
in the area throughout the summer months at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. The PRCAsanctioned rodeo kicks off with a barbecue each night at 6 p.m. Don’t miss the excitement of professional rodeo this summer.

Visit the dairy princess at the fair
For Suzanne Foote, wearing the crown of Washington County Dairy Princess is a family affair. The 17 year old senior-tobe at Greenwich Central School is the second member of her family to earn the distinction of Dairy Princess, following in the footsteps of her older sister MaryElizabeth who wore the tiara last year. “I watched her do it and at first I didn’t want to do it because of all the work, but eventually I changed my mind,” Foote said. Suzanne lives on a small Guernsey farm in Hartford where she helps her family care for around 20 cows. Farming has been part of her since she was a young girl. “I have shown cows ever since I can remember,” she said. Her mother, Elizabeth is an Ag-Science teacher at Greenwich and her grandfather, Bill Peck, is a fifth generation dairy farmer who along with Suzanne’s two uncles, run a 500 head Holstein far m in Schuylerville. Her father, Wayne, runs the family farm and used to raise Holsteins for other people before making the switch to Guernsey’s. In order to become dairy
princess, you have to be the daughter of a dairy farmer (or someone involved in the dairy industry), be between the ages of 16 and 24 years old, live within the county and have served as alternate, dairy maid or ambassador for the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, the organization that sponsors the program. And that’s just to qualify. After that you have to apply, write a speech and compete in a pageant where contestants are judged on their speaking ability and knowledge of the dairy industry. Suzanne has filled the role of dairy princess since April and has been busy ever since. She essentially promotes the dairy industry at local farmers’ markets, parades and school programs. “One of my responsibilities is to teach children about the dairy industry and the importance of dairy in the diet,” Foote explained. “I try to teach them about the good things drinking milk and eating dairy products can do for your health.” She says the health benefits of drinking milk go far beyond helping strengthen bones. “There are a lot of nutrients in milk other than calcium that help nourish the

“Interacting with the public at the booth will be a really good experience,” she said. As you would expect from a Dairy Princess, the fair is nothing new for Foote. Her family travels the short distance to the fair every year with their camper and Suzanne has showed her cows at several events there in the past. “Everyone looks forward to the fair. It’s the best week of the summer,” she said. Suzanne said her sister has given her a lot of useful advice in serving as dairy princess but teasingly admits “she hasn’t helped me as much as I helped her.” When she’s not gallivanting around the county promoting the dairy industry, Suzanne plays varsity tennis at Greenwich and is active in her local FFA chapter. She plans to attend college after her senior year where she will pursue a law degree.

Karaoke Contest Last year’s first-ever Washington County Fair Karaoke Contest was a “great success,” said organizer Kate Sullivan. “It was a blast.” Sullivan is the afternoon drive-time disc jockey at Froggy 107.1, the sponsor of the Karaoke Contest. She explained that the 40 contestants who will perform at the fair were chosen after applying online. While performing, they will be judged on

five categories: singing ability, appearance, stage presence, audience participation, and audience reaction. Even though Froggy is a country music station, competitors are not limited to country music for their song choices. Last year’s contest had performers ranging in age from 18 years old to seniors. “It was a really good show,” Sullivan said. “There were a lot of great
competitors; there wasn’t an empty seat in the house.” After the preliminary round, the 40 contestants will go down to the top five, from which the three finalists will be chosen by the judges. Sullivan noted that the entire show will end around 9:30 p.m. Whether you know a competitor or not, the Karaoke Contest is not to be missed. “It’s just a great time,” said Sullivan.

We’re more than a fair... Everyone thinks of it as the Washington County Fairgrounds, and that’s the site it is best known for, but from April though the end of October, there’s often something else going on there nearly every weekend. One of the major early events is an Antique Fair and Flea Market held in April, and at the same time the Farm Museum opens to the public.
In May, the American Cancer Society hosts “Bark For Life, and June sees an Old Timers Horse Show. The Tri-State Antique Tractor Show & Pull is in July, as is 4-H Sewing Camp and the Uncle Sam Chapter of the Antique Truck Clubs of America event. There is another Antique Fair & Flea Market in August, followed by the fair The Bellevue Pre-School
-Trike-a-thon and the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival are in September, and October starts with the Washington County Fall Finals Tractor and Truck Pulls. This year, a Medieval Re-creation group will host a major event at the fair site in October. The fairgrounds are also available for family reunions, wedding recep-
tions, fund-raisers and other events which have included snowmobile grass drags, horse and cattle shows, company picnics and TV and boat shows. Adirondack Drill Team
The Adirondack Drill Team is an all women’s equestrian drill team that founded in June 2011, when the members’ previous team disbanded. The riders wanted to keep doing what they loved – performing horseback drill maneuvers to music for audiences of all ages. Current members and their horses are Shellie Boucher riding Sammy, Geraldine Hurley on Hunter, Chantelle Waldron riding Unity, Lisa DeWitt on Lena, and Kim McGuire on Whiskey. The team’s combined experience includes performing at a variety of events including the 2010 Pfizer Fantasia show at the Equine Affaire in Springfield, Massachusetts; local rodeos; charity events; fairs, horse expos; local horse shows; and gymkhanas. Fair hosts baking contest Baking contests sponsored by national companies are usually only held at major state fairs, but the Washington County Fair is one of the rare county fairs that can boast of a contest sponsored by the King A r t h u r F l o u r Company. The event was brought to the fair by Mike Bittle, a King Arthur flour salesman who lives in Washington County, and who lobbied for a local version of the national baking competitions. Bittle will be one of the judges at this year’s event.
This year, adult contestants will compete to make the best pie. Adults contestants must be 19 years or older as of Jan. 1, 2011. The Youth contestants will be making their favorite frosted c u p c a ke. Youth should be between the ages of 10 and 18 as of Jan. 1, 2011. All contestants will use King Arthur Flour to create their baked goods. “King Arthur Flour has been very generous,” said Chrys Nestle of Washington County Cornell Cooperative Extension. She noted that
the company donates prizes and a two-pound bag of flour for every entrant. Judging will take place on Wednesday, August 24 at 9 a.m. at the Washington County Fair Youth Building #26. Entries and the winners
will be on display in the Youth Building during the week, and any leftovers on the day of judging will be handed out to fair goers. Note: Entries are closed for this event.

Fair rewards local scholars The Washington County Fair, Inc. is pleased to announce that (4) four $500.00 scholarships will be given for the 2011 – 2012 school year. Eligible applicants are those students who have been, or are currently active in the fair, and who will be students at an accredited institution of higher learning during the 2011 – 2012 term. The scholarship program was established as an extension of the educational purpose of the Washington County Fair. This scholarship is issued directly to the recipient.
