SATURDAY THROUGH MONDAY, ELKS PARK

Mountainfilm has a history of getting people outside, and to honor that tradition, we offer Free Range Programs — events centered around the forests, trails and landscapes of Telluride. This year, The North Face is hosting our Free Range headquarters in Elks Park featuring world-class athletes including Conrad Anker, Jim Morrison, Jess Kimura, Erik Leon, Renan Ozturk and others.

VENTURE OUT WITH THE NORTH FACE

STOP BY AND SIGN UP AT THE NORTH FACE TENT STARTING SATURDAY AT 9 AM Passholders and the general public are welcome at these free events but there is limited space of 8 to 10 people per event. Saturday and Sunday there will be afternoon happy hours sponsored by Telluride Brewing Company and Spire Wines from 3 p.m.–5 p.m.

WOODWELL PARTY

THURSDAY, 8 PM SMUGGLER’S BREWPUB Join Mountainfilm’s partner, Woodwell Climate Research Center, to kick off the weekend celebrating 35 years of Woodwell’s collaborative transformational research and education to combat climate change and safeguard the future of life here on Earth.

SATURDAY, 2 PM-3:30 PM COLORADO AVENUE (MAIN STREET) BETWEEN ASPEN AND FIR STREETS It’s called the Ice Cream Social, but there’s much more than scoops of free frozen treats. It’s a place to connect with fellow Mountainfilmers, network and compare notes. Featuring homemade ice cream from local restaurant La Cocina de Luz.

This event is free and open to the public. Be sure to stop by Between the Covers at 224 W. Colorado Ave. for a special book signing featuring local authors and tons of Mountainfilm-related titles

MOUNTAINFILM: THE EARLY YEARS

SATURDAY, 2 PM-3:30 PM WILKINSON PUBLIC LIBRARY TERRACE Join Mountainfilm special guests for this intimate conversation about the early years of Mountainfilm, founded in 1979 by Bill Kees and Lito Tejada-Flores. This panel of climbing and filmmaking luminaries will tell stories of the early festival years,

where attendees played outside in the mountains by day and watched cutting-edge mountain films by night. In person: Edgar Boyles, Susan Kees, Scott Ransom and Lito Tejada-Flores

HAPPY HOUR & ATHLETE CHAT WITH THE NORTH FACE

OSPREY SPOKEN WORD WITH CRAIG CHILDS & TIMMY O’NEILL

SUNDAY, 2 PM-3 PM JAGGED EDGE MOUNTAIN GEAR Calling all writers and lovers of the spoken word! Craig Childs, author of Atlas of a Lost World: Travels in Ice Age America, and Timmy O’Neill, professional rock climber and public speaker, are joining forces for a spoken-word event at Jagged Edge, hosted by Osprey.

CLOSING PICNIC & AWARDS CEREMONY

MONDAY, 1 PM-4 PM AWARDS CEREMONY STARTS AT 2:30 PM TELLURIDE TOWN PARK Wrap up the festival with a delicious vegetarian lunch from La Cocina de Luz and the festival awards in the park. Rather than voting once for your favorite film, you’ll have the chance to rate every feature film you watch during Mountainfilm in Telluride May 27-30. You can vote by using the Mountainfilm app or by a web browser in your Eventive account. Voting for Audience Choice ends at 2 p.m.

The picnic is free with your Patron, Ama Dablam, Special Guest & Palmyra passes. Tickets available for $30 at the gate. MOUNTAINFILM DOWNLOW

MONDAY, 7 PM-9 PM TRANSFER WAREHOUSE This live storytelling event produced by Telluride Theater features ingenious, hilarious, outrageous and moving tales by Mountainfilm guests and local performers.

AWARDS

Festival awards are announced at the Closing Picnic and Awards Ceremony, which takes place in Telluride Town Park on Monday from 1 p.m.–4 p.m.

AUDIENCE CHOICE: $5,000 The winner of this award will be decided by Mountainfilm in Telluride attendees. All feature films (films over 40 minutes in length) are eligible. Funded in part by Tully & Elise Friedman. MOVING MOUNTAINS: $2,500 This award honors films that focus on social justice and impact, and supports both the filmmaker and the film’s associated nonprofit. Funded in part by Tully & Elise Friedman.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: $5,000 This juried award celebrates exceptional filmmaking for feature films (films over 40 minutes in length). Funded in part by Tully & Elise Friedman.

BEST SHORT FILM: $1,000 This juried award celebrates exceptional filmmaking for short films (films under 40 minutes in length). Funded in part by Tully & Elise Friedman.

CHARLIE FOWLER BEST ADVENTURE FILM: $2,500 Charlie Fowler was a world-class climber and Telluride crag pioneer who died on a 2006 expedition in China with his partner Christine Boskoff. This juried award goes to the best adventure film. Funded by the Fowler family. WOMEN IN FILM: $2,500 This award is presented to an outstanding woman in the film industry who shows excellence and indomitable spirit either in front of or behind the camera. Funded by Riccarda de Eccher & Bill Goldston.

STUDENT CHOICE: $1,000 High school students from the immersive Mountainfilm for Students program select the film they think will best inspire their generation. Funded by Telluride Academy

2022 AWARDS ARTIST: R. NELSON PARRISH Alaskan sculptor R. Nelson Parrish’s tactile, dynamic pieces represent a fusion of natural and synthetic, sculpture and painting. They aim to disengage the viewer from the peripheral and focus on the present moment — eliciting a calm that is rare in today’s chaotic world.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE

ERIC D’ARBELOFF Eric d’Arbeloff is the Co-Founder and Co-President of Roadside Attractions, which creates innovative releases for specialty feature films. Roadside films have garnered numerous awards, as well as a cumulative box office of almost half a billion dollars. D’Arbeloff produced films include Trick (Sundance 1999), Lovely & Amazing (Telluride Film Festival 2001), and All Is Lost (Cannes 2013).

KATHRYN EVERETT Kathryn Everett is the Co-Founder and Head of Film at XTR and Co-Founder of the streaming platform DOCUMENTARY+. Kathryn has executive produced Oscar-nominated, Emmy and Peabody award-winning documentaries, including Hunger Ward (Mountainfilm 2021) and 76 Days. She currently serves as a board member for Iqra Fund.

SHEILA NEVINS Sheila Nevins is the foremother of documentary filmmaking, earning countless Oscars, Peabodys and Emmy awards over the course of her 50-plus-year career. Nevins joined HBO in 1979 and served as the network’s President of Documentary and Family Programming from 2005-2018. She oversaw more than 1,000 documentaries during her tenure at HBO and is now the Head of MTV Documentary division of MTV Studios.

BEST SHORT FILM

SKYE FITZGERALD Skye Fitzgerald has built a career documenting global human rights and social justice issues. He has shot for Dateline NBC, CNN, History Channel, Travel Channel and ABC. He most recently directed a trilogy of films on the global refugee crisis: 50 Feet from Syria (Mountainfilm 2016), Lifeboat (Mountainfilm 2018) and Hunger Ward (Mountainfilm 2021) — the latter two both receiving Mountainfilm Commitment Grants and Oscar nominations.

SIAN-PIERRE REGIS Sian-Pierre Regis is a filmmaker who recently directed, produced and self-distributed his debut feature documentary Duty Free (Mountainfilm 2021). Prior to filmmaking, Regis was a journalist and on-camera contributor to CNN, HLN, MTV and founded Swagger, an online lifestyle magazine for millennials with over 1.5 million fans. He is a Firelight Media Fellow and Film Independent Documentary Lab Fellow.

TOM OYER Tom Oyer is the Senior Vice President of Member Relations and Awards at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. His career with the Academy jump-started in the mailroom, from which he landed a role in the Awards department. Oyer has become the go-to for everything documentary-related and the point person for Live Action Short Film, Animated Short Film, and Makeup and Hairstyling categories for the Oscars.

CHARLIE FOWLER BEST ADVENTURE FILM

PETE TAKEDA Pete Takeda is a writer, filmmaker and climber. He is the editor of Accidents in North American Climbing and has penned stories for Alpinist, Rock and Ice, Outside, and Backpacker. He is the author of National Geographic: Climb! and An Eye at the Top of the World. Takeda has served as a jury member for the Banff Mountain Book Competition, and is a board member of the American Alpine Club, the American Mountain Guides Association, and the Boulder Adventure Film Festival.

SHELMA JUN Shelma Jun is the Founder of Flash Foxy, a multimedia platform that creates space and resources in climbing for women and gender non-conforming folks, and is the creator of the Flash Foxy Climbing Festival, a weekend of climbing, panels and clinics. Shelma’s directorial debut, Do Better Together, was an official selection for Mountainfilm 2020.

JOANNA CROSTON Joanna Croston grew up and went to university in Eastern Canada before moving to the Canadian Rockies permanently in 1998. She is the Director of the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival and World Tour. Her writing has appeared in Highline Magazine, Gripped, The Canadian Alpine Journal, The Canadian Rockies Annual and Alpinist. Additionally, she authored Breaking Trail: Chic Scott’s Story.
