FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Troy Fair The last week of July, every year, Troy’s Alparon Park is transformed into a village. It’s not so much a village of buildings and roadways, although there are some of those, as the concept of a village. It is the one and only Troy Fair (www.troyfair. com; 570-297-3648) and the village is one of like-minded people, the agriculture they love, the animals that are a part of it, and the willingness to share all that with the 50,000 or so folks who show up at the village gates throughout fair week. “The focus of Pennsylvania fairs is the ag theme, and in Bradford County we still have a lot of active farms,” says Jon Jenkins, ag coordinator for the fair. “We try to make it a positive thing for people who never get to be on a farm. We try to keep the barns updated and presentable so people get the right ideas about farming.” There is definitely an ag and a village focus, says Robyn Chamberlain, director of the Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency. Fair participants—animals and people— come from all over and stay for the week of the fair “and it turns into this little village” where families forge new bonds with other families, kids make lifelong friends, and everybody benefits. “We’re very lucky,” says Jon. “People really support the Troy Fair. We watch kids grow up and some of them come back and help with the fair.” “For some farmers this is their vacation,” notes Cathy Jenkins, Jon’s wife and president of the Troy Fair. Sometimes there is a bit of tag-teaming which then has to happen so the home farm work doesn’t suffer; the fair attendees are fortunate to reap the rewards of that go-the-extra-mile ethic. “Every day of the week they’ll be able to see these animals,” Cathy says. And they don’t just see them, they see them in action. The 4-H and FFA groups are happy to explain the hows and whys of milking cows, about the kind of care goats, sheep, rabbits, and chickens need. The Troy Fair has, of course, an amazing array of agriculture-related displays (“We still have a lot of farm machinery dealers who show up, which some fairs have trouble getting,” notes Jon.), dozens of vendors selling an assortment of crafts and art, delicious foods, an exciting midway, and top-notch live entertainment (if you’ve never seen mutton-busting, you’re in for a treat). The 2018 Troy Fair, which will be the 143rd, is set for July 23-28. Gate admission is eight dollars. 18

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

RiverFest As the Susquehanna River twists and turns through the heart of Pennsylvania’s Northern Tier, it has shaped the history of the towns nestled along its banks. Each town has a unique relationship with the river, and Towanda is no exception. For the last thirty years, this small borough has celebrated its river heritage with the annual RiverFest. RiverFest—the dates are August 16-18 for 2018—was started by two town merchants, Anne Sturzen and Kaye Connell, along with Main Street managers Jim Zubler, Jim Stewart, and Steve Lattimer, to celebrate the end of the summer vacation season with end of the season sidewalk sales. These days, thousands gather in Towanda for fun on the banks of the river along Merrill Parkway, and it is one of the most popular venues in the area for family and class reunions. The carnival—now a big part of the festival—began in the mid-90s, according to Jim Haight, co-chair of the RiverFest Committee, when RiverFest got its first Ferris wheel. The party has continued to expand ever since, with the help of local service organizations and dedicated volunteers, and now includes a full carnival and local musical groups for evening entertainment. Headliners like American Idol’s Aaron Kelly and Flipside have also appeared. Be sure to bring your appetite when you visit RiverFest. Barbecued chicken from the local fire company, pulled pork from St. Agnes School, funnel cakes, fresh lemonade, ice cream, cotton candy, and more await you and your fork. If you need to burn off some of those calories, plenty of activities are available for those so inclined. Past events have included kayak and canoe paddles down the river, and a 5K walk or run. There is plenty to keep the younger set busy as well. Kid-centered entertainment has in past years included jugglers, dancers, magicians, and karaoke contests. Hurley’s Fresh Market always provides the castle jump house, and the Little Mr. and Miss River pageant, a service-oriented contest for children, is popular. Saturdays are the pinnacle of RiverFest, and typically begin with an event like 2017’s hotrod “Cruise-In” sponsored by Hi Caliber Motorsports of Wysox, Pennsylvania. Saturday night is not to be missed as one of the most impressive firework displays in the area sets the night sky ablaze during a thirty-minute finale to this great party. The river, at times, brought great fortune and great heartache to those who live and work along its banks, but it is surely a part of this community to be celebrated and embraced. So be sure to put the thirty-first annual Riverfest on your calendar and remember: admission is free! 20

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival The mission of the Wyalusing Valley Museum is, according to its Website, to “educate, preserve and interpret the rich history and culture of the Wyalusing Valley” along with that of the entire southeastern corner of Bradford County. The purpose of the annual Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival, meanwhile, is to promote and showcase Pennsylvania wineries, especially those in what is known as the Endless Mountains Region. That is according to Morgan Clinton, who bridges both entities—she is the curator of the museum and a member of the wine festival committee. History and wine. A match made, if not in heaven, then at least hard by the Susquehanna River and the gorgeous valley through which it meanders. The wine festival, held in September—2018’s is September 15—was started in 2003 when the museum was looking for a way to raise operational funds. “When the idea was conceived it became quickly apparent that this type of festival would be a large undertaking for one organization,” Morgan remembers. “So, the museum asked the Lions and Lionesses of Wyalusing if they would like to partner in running the fundraising event.” When the Lions and Lionesses, part of the service organization Lions Clubs International, roared their approval, not only was a wine festival created but a real community event was as well. Morgan noted that the local Lions and Lionesses contribute funding to more than a dozen area and national service agencies, provide support for People Helping People, send year-round donations to local fire victims and people suffering catastrophic illnesses, and sponsor the Wyalusing Leo Club, an active youth organization. The 2017 wine festival drew sixteen wineries, all from Pennsylvania, including local ones such as Antler Ridge, Pickering, and Grovedale. “The Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival prides itself on featuring Pennsylvania wineries,” says Morgan, noting that the event also includes live music, food, and craft vendors. Tasting ticket holders also receive a commemorative wine glass. It is held on the Tuscarora Wayne Campus, just off Route 6, which “provides a lovely view of rolling hills,” and goes on rain or shine, except for 2011 when a devastating flood wiped it out. Even then, however—and true to its cause of being a major benefactor to the community—food supplies that had been ordered for the festival were put to good use, feeding displaced families and flood cleanup workers. Morgan encourages everyone interested in the Wyalusing Wine Festival to visit www. wyalusingwinefestival.com or the Facebook page to learn more about tickets, pricing, policies, and directions. 22

Athens Arts4All Festival Looking for some creative inspiration or perhaps a unique, locally made piece of art for your home? Athens Arts4All Festival is an excellent opportunity to experience first-hand the local arts scene, to enjoy music and food, and perhaps even design and make some art yourself. Arts4All is set for May 5 to 6 at Harlan Rowe Middle School in Athens, Pennsylvania. Admission is just one dollar. The event is open from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Sunday throughout the school cafeterias, hallways, and gymnasium. With space for over one hundred artisan vendors, this two-day festival will host a mix of artist displays, demonstrations, musical talent, student art shows, children’s activities, raffles, and more. Arts4All is a revamped version of what was the hugely popular Athens Art Fest. The change was made after the majority of Athens Art Fest committee members retired. Kurt Priester, president of the new non-profit overseeing Arts4All, explains that the new organization was created “to foster the arts in the Athens Area School District and the Valley community.” “The main goal of Athens Arts4All is to allow people to be exposed to art, experience art, and to create art,” says Kurt, who is one of twelve individuals developing and planning the event. The students are, of course, a big part of that. Students from the Athens Area School District created the logo after they were invited to participate in a graphic design contest; winners were Alexa Blackman, Jessi Bellows, and Ian Lynch. The school’s art room will serve as a throwing room where students will teach participants how to create a wheel-thrown vessel. Art classes will be available in other spaces throughout the school, giving creative participants a place and time to craft their own masterpieces. And for those interested in other art forms, organizers are planning an Athens Arts4All 5K run/walk. Art displays will be juried in thirteen different categories, including painting, metal, soaps/ lotions/oils, 2-D, photography, clay, jewelry, culinary, fiber, wood, glass, crafts, and mixed media. Applications for artwork submissions are due no later than January 19, 2018. Participating artisans can look forward to a continental breakfast and booth set-up and tear-down assistance during the festival. Athens Arts4All promises a fun environment for creative minds to come together in the name of art. Don’t miss this opportunity to be part of an amazing weekend. For more information about Athens Arts4All go to www.athensarts4all.com. 24

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Canton Wine & Cheese Festival Everyone loves it when a plan comes together, and that’s especially true for those who plan things like festivals. Well, for the group of folks who came up with the Canton Wine and Cheese Festival ten years ago, not only did the initial plan come together nicely…but it continues to do so a decade later. And both the planners and the 2,000 or so wine, cheese, and craft lovers who show up every year on the fourth Saturday in June—and they come rain or shine, by the way—couldn’t be happier. The Wine and Cheese Festival (www.cantonwineandcheese.com and Facebook) is sort of an offshoot of the larger Pennsylvania Apple and Cheese Festival that happens in October on the same grounds, the beautifully appointed, historic Manley-Bohlayer Farm in Canton, and run by almost exactly the same people, including Angie Schoonover. “About ten years ago, we sat down with a group of people who all like wine and have all sort of had parts in running festivals in the past,” Angie says. “We thought, ‘Well, the Apple and Cheese Festival has a few wineries and people have always asked why we didn’t have more wineries,’ and we always replied, ‘Well, then it would be a wine festival.’ So, everyone decided maybe we should have a wine festival.” And since nothing goes better with wine than cheese, it was an appropriate combination for the new event—which is co-sponsored by the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce and the local arts group Rekindle the Spirit Inc. “We have a lot of great cheese makers in the area with an abundance of dairy and cows and things like that,” notes Angie. “So, it’s a natural pairing for our area.” The Wine and Cheese Festival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on that fourth June Saturday, hosts ten Pennsylvania wineries—a perfect number, Angie says—three or four cheese makers, and a number of other vendors selling all sorts of homemade crafts and wares. Local bands and musicians are on hand to round out the festive and downhome atmosphere. The bucolic, lovingly manicured farm grounds help create the perfect ambiance to taste wine, visit with friends, check out crafts, and even dance a bit. “It’s really a smaller festival; everyone has enough elbow room to move around,” Angie muses. “It’s been a lot of fun working through how to start a festival from scratch. It’s a lot of work but it’s totally worth it when you show up and everyone is having so much fun and enjoying an event you put together. It’s very rewarding.” 26

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Pennsylvania Heritage Festival For a peek into Bradford County history, make the Pennsylvania Heritage Festival (www. paheritagefestival.org) one of your goto events every fall. The festival takes place the third weekend of September at the fully restored Heritage Village and Farm Museum in Troy, and is a vast showcase of Pennsylvania from a bygone era, with hundreds of artisans and demonstrators, and a large collection of artifacts. Each year the Bradford County Heritage Association adds new exhibits to keep the event fresh and exciting. As you walk through Pennsylvania’s past, you will have the opportunity to check out the authentic Porter’s Barber Shop, where haircuts were once just twenty-five cents. Visit the one-room Thomas School House and the Children’s Church, both depicting education and religion from years ago. In the Sugar Shack see early tree-tapping equipment and technology-free maple-syrup-producing tools such as buckets and vats. You can also stop by the fully restored 1822 Stage Coach Inn. Explore the Carriage House, which contains a large collection of over fifty wagons, sleighs, and carriages. A large textile tent showcases spinning and weaving wool, looms, flax, quilting, and quilling. If you’re looking for a unique gift, the Artisan Marketplace, with a variety of juried arts and crafts from all over Pennsylvania and New York, may have just what you need, as handcrafted goods such as jewelry, soaps, food, quilts, ornaments, and much more are available for purchase. You can also get some insight into how these talented artisans produce their work—they’re happy to chat with you about their creative process. Some of the demonstrations you may enjoy and participate in at the Heritage Festival include butter making, sheep shearing, cow milking, wood carving and whittling, and rope making. A blacksmith and cobbler will provide demonstrations as well, and a Civil War encampment, where you can march in a military parade or watch as reenactors fire cannons, helps bring that period of our history to life. Toe-tapping performers like Vernal Pool and Gnarled Knuckles String Band are on hand to provide a fun mix of live music on a variety of old and new instruments, including string bass, acoustic guitar, banjo, Scottish small pipes, mandolin, and fiddle. The Heritage Festival organizers want the younger set to enjoy history as well. With a large variety of farm animals, hands-on experiences, a pedal tractor pull, crafts, and games, children (and their parents) will have a fun-filled, educational experience. Admission to the festival is just five dollars for adults; children twelve and under are free. 28

Pennsylvania Apple & Cheese Festival Devotees of the annual Pennsylvania Apple & Cheese Festival in Canton (www.paapplecheese.com) know a handcrafted apple dumpling from the Apple Dumpling Gang is a palate-pleasing treat which is well worth the wait. Forty members of the East Canton Methodist Church comprise this baking brigade. Another twenty or so volunteers are recruited from the community—high schoolers to senior citizens to home bakers—to mix, roll, fill, bake, and sell the 2,500 or more delicious dough delights during the two-day event. “We’ve been making apple dumplings for the festival for more than ten years and we couldn’t do it without the help of our friends and neighbors,” notes Baking Manager Bonnie DeFelice. “About twenty-five percent of the ingredients are donated by local businesses. Ten to twelve of us start prepping three days before the event, mixing 250 batches of dough. The next day, baking begins at 5:15 a.m., using our five church ovens, and we wrap things up around 9:30 p.m. And, we have a few runners who take pre-made, ready-to-bake dumplings to about a dozen home bakers around town. We work with a second church as back-up, if needed.” Dumplings are heated on site for optimal enjoyment and can be purchased with or without ice cream ($4.50 for the dumpling; fifty cents for ice cream—and it’s perfectly okay to try your dumpling both ways). Some years, dumplings have sold out the first day. When asked about special ingredients used, and what sets these apple dumplings apart, Bonnie provides some insight but didn’t give away any trade secrets. “Well,” she says, “as a volunteer, we’re not allowed to share the recipe. But, the group likes to stick with Cortland or Macs and our ‘must have’ ingredient we prefer is either Pillsbury or Gold Medal flour.” And the volunteers are all well aware of the numbers of folks who are anticipating that first bite of tender flaky crust surrounding the rich sweetness of local apples. Do festivalgoers love these dumplings because they can taste the generosity of the volunteer bakers in every bite? Bonnie pauses, then offers, “I’m not sure about that, but one year we had an individual who loved them so much he purchased forty-eight dumplings. We think he was giving them to his employees as a thank you!” The Pennsylvania Apple & Cheese Festival is the first full weekend in October at the historic Manley-Boylayer Farm; 2018 will mark its twenty-ninth year. 30

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS

Sayre Christmas Parade The Sayre Christmas Parade is that community’s kick-off to the holiday season. “I am amazed year after year how many people come to the parade,” says David M. Jarrett, Sayre’s borough manager. “The 2016 parade had a crowd of 8,000 spectators, and more than 875 individuals participating, along with fifty-eight local groups and businesses.” The parade is always the day after Thanksgiving at 6:30 p.m. (weather permitting). The 2018 parade may be extra special as it is the event’s twentieth anniversary. “We are discussing the incorporation of a surprise or two, but we really can’t commit to anything until we get closer to next year’s date,” David says. The parade begins at West Lockhart Street near Sayre High School, proceeds onto Desmond Street, West Packer Avenue, and ends at Howard Elmer Park. Santa Claus himself is on the last fire truck. “The best place to view depends on what type of experience you want to have,” David says. “If you are attending the parade for the first time, you may want to stand along West Lockhart Street between Wilbur Avenue and Island Pond. The crowd there is not too large, and you get to see the lights on the fire trucks reflect off Island Pond. If you don’t want to be crowded, you may want to stand along Desmond Street. Even though there are a few thousand spectators, the street is very wide so the crowd is more spread out. Plus, the judge’s stand is located on Desmond Street so you will get a good opportunity to see the musical performances. My favorite place is on West Packer Avenue because that is where you start feeling the buzz of the parade. The crowd is usually six or eight people deep on West Packer Avenue—the kids are excited because they know Santa Claus is coming soon.” David notes that Sayre is a very walkable community, and residents generally walk to the parade. For visitors there are 200 parking spaces off of Desmond Street, more than 200 parking spaces on the Guthrie Medical Campus, and more parking spaces at downtown businesses. Thanksgiving weekend is a very busy time in Sayre. More than 900 runners and walkers participate in the annual Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning; the parade is on Friday night; and the Sayre Historical Society hosts its final event on Saturday. “Events like the parade are what make our community a great place to live,” says David. And to visit. Plan to make the twentieth Sayre Borough Christmas Parade the place for your holiday merriment to begin. 34

GREAT OUTDOORS

The Shooter’s Gauntlet In a remote wooded encampment of Bradford County’s Endless Mountains, former U.S. Navy SEALs teach men and women tactical pistol and rifle shooting, and long-range sniping with computer windage technology. Justin Vititoe, a former instructor at the U.S. Army Sniper School with four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, may be teaching you that day. Ask him about his survival experience in the northern Vancouver Island wilderness for the History Channel show Alone. Look around and you’ll see Army, Air Force, and Marine Special Ops helping with closequarters combat in a “kill house run” against steel and reactive steel targets, camo-clad marksmen flying along on the “zip-line shoot”, billed as “850 feet of heart pounding fun,” a suburban dad taking NRA Range Safety Officer training, a hostage-taking event, and even safe, fun, family activities. Welcome to Shooters Gauntlet, a 1,000-acre shooter’s fantasy camp and adventure resort in Monroeton for (legal and pre-registered) gun aficionados. It bills itself as the place “where freedom and adventure collide” and “an experience like no other anywhere.” Towanda, the county seat, is only ten miles north and east, but owner Bob Raimo’s elaborately developed playground, tucked between state game lands, is a world apart, with a 1,100-yard shooting range that looks like a golf-course on Hamburger Hill, four-wheeler drive paths snaking through the woods, bunk houses that sleep sixteen, world-class instructors and cooks on hand, and a vast menu of shooting and personal defense events for everyone from the weekend warrior to corporate retreaters. Shooter-tourists come from all over for the Stone Mountain Machine Gun Shoot & Gun Show. The third annual show is June 2 and 3, and if you want to sign up for it, or any other event, check out www.shootersgauntlet.com. There you will also find an incredible video of the second annual (2017) Labor Day Machine Gun Shoot. Without giving it away, it features men and women, top weapons and instructors, a fifty-pound explosive, and a series of cars that end up like burning hulks in an action movie. Other events include the International Krav Maga camp, for training in that mixedmartial arts military self-defense and fighting system developed for the Israel Defense Forces and Mossad. Watch for instructor Ernie Kirk, a third-degree black belt and lead hand-to-hand combat instructor at Fort Dix. Or shoot pistols with the Wind Whisperer, eight-time national match champion Ron Smith. Take the one-day hunter’s prep class with your own rifle, the Concealed Carry Weapon Freedom class, or shoot upside-down while hanging from the Inversion Rack. Too much fun! What are you waiting for? 36

GREAT OUTDOORS

A Trail Worth Exploring A water trail, like a hiking trail, takes you through some of the country’s most remarkable scenery. The North Branch of the Susquehanna River Water Trail is no exception. Beginning at the New York/ Pennsylvania border, the North Branch travels through the Endless Mountains Heritage Region, a rural landscape rich in scenic corridors, historic districts, and natural resources. Seasoned paddlers describe the North Branch as serene and awe-inspiring. You’ll experience bucolic scenes dotted with farms along some sections of the river; in others, you’ll travel through dramatic glacier-sculpted landscapes. Stop by historic sites such as French Azilum, where exiles escaping the French Revolution settled in 1793. Although no structures from that period remain, the self-guided tour helps you imagine the plans for the 300-acre town. Have your binoculars ready as you paddle past the Finger Islands, a cluster of islands favored by birders and wildlife watchers. As you float down the North Branch, contemplate the Wyalusing Rocks, an important strategic and sacred spot for the Native American community. Craving an ice cream? Put in at one of the river towns for a snack along the way. On the North Branch River Trail, you’ll find plenty of scenic, historic, and geological points of interest. Endless Mountain Outfitters in Sugar Run provides guides and shuttle services for community celebrations in several river towns. Their wing nights and fall pumpkin floats require reservations; their store provides rentals and sales of equipment. The North Branch also supports an exceptional warmwater fishery, according to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, with smallmouth bass being particularly abundant. How lucky are color-loving anglers that the best time to snag a catch is the fall foliage season. For those who prefer land-based activities, a stroll down the walkway which follows the river in Towanda is like a promenade in a French seaside village. The one-mile walking path is an invitation to experience the importance of water to the development of towns, industry, and commerce along its course. The Susquehanna River, voted Pennsylvania’s River of the Year in 2016, travels 444 miles from its source near Cooperstown, New York, to the Chesapeake Bay. For paddlers who’ve navigated the entire river, claim your badge and membership in the Susquehanna River 444 Club. There are maps and guides (www.susquehannagreenway.org or Facebook are good starting places) highlighting the features, launches, and services available along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River Trail. Iroquois settlers, eminent botanists, and traders of all nations travelled this trail hundreds of years ago; now it’s your turn to explore. 38

Larnard-Hornbrook County Park Some of the prettiest sites for an RV or tent camping adventure are nestled among a grove of trees on the banks of the Susquehanna River. Larnard-Hornbrook County Park, dotted with stands of mature willows and sycamores and new plantings of locust, catalpa, and oak, is an attractive spot to camp, picnic, or launch a boat. With forty RV sites, each with water and electric hook-up (both 30- and 50-amp), the park, just off Route 6 in Sheshequin Township, beckons outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the county’s scenic beauty. It has a variety of tenting sites, each equipped with a fire ring; all you need is a tent (and the marshmallows). Showers and restroom facilities are available as well. The thirty-acre Larnard-Hornbrook County Park (www.bradfordcountypa.org/index.php/ county-parks/larnard-hornbrook) consists of two tracts, one parcel off Hornbrook Road, which is the camping, playground, and pavilion area, and the second, an undeveloped island in the river. Established through a state program designed to increase the number of parks in rural areas, the name honors Benny Larnard, a man who worked diligently to make the park a reality. Drive around the park road, Benny Lane (a second honor for Mr. Larnard), and notice the four covered pavilions, ready to accommodate a family reunion, a graduation, or a silver anniversary party. For children, one of the highlights of the park is the new playground. This inclusive play area is fun for all children, including those who are differently-abled. On a summer day, the playground is brimming with kids enjoying slides, climbing towers, spinners, sensory elements, even a scavenger hunt. The boat launch is bustling much of the season, with kayakers, canoeists, and those in small motorized craft ready to head downstream—some to fish for smallmouth bass, others to watch bald eagles soaring, many to enjoy the scenes along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River Trail, a designated National River Trail coursing through the Endless Mountains Region. Larnard-Hornbrook County Park is open from mid-April through mid-October, day use from dawn to dusk. Throughout the season there is a resident park concessioner. Applications for pavilion rentals are available through the Bradford County Commissioners Office or by calling (570) 265-1727. Call Libby Keeney, park concessioner, at (607) 742-9930 for RV or tent camping information and reservations. Both seasonal camping and pavilion rentals require non-refundable deposits as well as applications; those will be accepted after January 1, 2018. 40

Wyalusing North Branch Triathlon There is an ever-growing cadre of folks for whom a triathlon—a race consisting of three separate contests—is an exhilarating way to spend a morning. And, if you’re one of them, Wyalusing, Pennsylvania, is the place to be on Saturday, September 15. The Wyalusing North Branch Triathlon, set for Saturday, September 15, 2018, is a celebration of sport, nature, and community, and includes a 3.6 mile run, a 4.5 mile paddle on the Susquehanna, and a 15.3 mile bike ride, with competitors going from one event to the next without pause. The Triathlon attracts athletes from all over. “We’ve had folks come from Massachusetts for this,” says David Keeler, last year’s race coordinator. “Lots of places have road races, but triathlons are rare.” In fact, the North Branch began as a traditional road race more than a decade ago and morphed into the event it is today. David says the September weather is often perfect for such a demanding sport. “It’s not horribly hot and, if we have good summer weather, the leaves are very pretty.” As is the route. The race begins at 9 a.m. with a mostly flat run, then a down-river paddle, with help from the current, and ending with an out-and-back bike ride. “There is a pretty good hill on the bike portion,” David admits. “but it makes for a nice glide back down.” Participants can compete in categories as individuals or a team; there is often an even split between single and team entries. An Ironman and Ironwoman are crowned, based on the best individual effort. If you can run like the wind, but can’t paddle worth a darn, three people can each take a leg. There are also age-related awards in both team and solo times. “We’ve had ten-year olds, we’ve had 70-year olds,” David says. Regardless of age, competing in a triathlon is not to be taken lightly. Often a person excels in one of the activities and has to build their strength in the other two. “People don’t just decide the night before to attempt this,” David says, “You have to train for quite awhile.” Most folks compete against their own personal best, as David did himself, a year after hip replacement. “I came in dead last,” he laughs. “But our timekeeper told me I was the fastest ever last person.” The Wyalusing North Branch Triathlon is a fund-raiser for the Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce. Visit www.wyalusingnorthbranchtriathlon.com or email gwccbluegrass@ gmail.com for information and watch active.com for online registration. 42

GREAT EATS

Local Goods Guide Formerly known as the Buy Fresh, Buy Local program in Bradford, Tioga, and Potter counties, the Local Goods Guide has taken its place with a fresh focus on building greater awareness between consumers and tourists, connecting them to regional growers and artisans. The change is the result of a state-wide cut in funding for Buy Fresh, Buy Local programs. Fortunately, a group of concerned individuals stepped in with efforts to rally behind a local goods guide shortly after they learned the news. An all-volunteer committee was soon formed. “The state funding of the former Buy Fresh, Buy Local guide was discontinued. Had it not been for the grassroots efforts of this group, the Local Goods Guide would not exist,” says Robyn Chamberlain, executive director, Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency. The purpose remains the same, she continues, “to make it easier for consumers to find, choose and appreciate great local foods while supporting the farmers and lands that produce them.” As with similar initiatives found in regions around the country, there may not be an umbrella agency responsible for program oversite or production of a guide or marketing materials. Yet programs like these continue to crop up in agricultural and farming communities where building a collaborative regional food network benefits many, serving as a local foods locator. Led by growers, producers, chefs, wineries, artisans—advocates who work to increase awareness of the farm-to-table movement—they connect the dots. And it serves to build a business-to-business network. For instance, if local chefs want the freshest summer vegetables and fruits they can refer to the guide and source directly from growers. Programs often rely on memberships, supporters, and advertising to fund efforts. “The goals are to continue the promotion of agriculture in these counties by listing farmers, producers, restaurants and businesses that offer consumers locally grown foods and locally made products,” notes Robyn. “The group wants to ensure the continuation and circulation of the guide throughout the three counties it represents: Bradford, Tioga, and Potter, and beyond, increasing its content and circulation. The local goods guide is a fantastic way to promote the ever-important agriculture industry in this region. Please support your local farmers and goods producers by purchasing goods locally and helping to sustain this industry.” Guides will be available early in the year at the tourism office, the county’s five chambers, and restaurants/markets in the region. 48

OUR HISTORY

Bradford County Historical Society The Bradford County Historical Society is one of the oldest historical societies in Pennsylvania. Organized in 1870 and incorporated in 1875, primary early achievements were gathering a collection of materials related to early county history and publication of David Craft’s History of Bradford County in 1878. Due to squabbles over the Craft book, the society disbanded and then reorganized some twenty-five years later. John A. Codding called a meeting to revive the organization, officers were elected, and in 1903 the county commissioners leased the courthouse annex to the group for use as a museum and archival space. Portraits, books, old newspapers, Civil War souvenirs, and geological and archeological artifacts found a home there. Research files were established and papers written on various topics. The Society hosted an event called “Old People’s Day” that celebrated the oldest folks in the county with programs, food, and demonstrations. In 1926 another county history was published, this time by historian and former Society secretary Clement F. Heverly, who did a great deal of work organizing and labeling the group’s collections. After his death, there was another lull in the organization’s activities until Leo E. Wilt was elected president in 1941. Wilt attracted new energy and the museum and historical society thrived. In 1974, in need of more space, they moved to 21 Main Street, Towanda. Then, in 2002, the museum and all collections were moved to the former county jail on Pine Street where it all remains today. It is open during the summer months and on Saturdays in September and October. A research library is open several days a week yearround. Visit www.bradfordhistory.com for specific days and hours of operation and listings of special programs like “Friday Night at the Museum” lectures held monthly from May to October. The mission of the Bradford County Historical Society is to record and preserve the history of Bradford County by means of documents, publications, tapes, photographs, artifacts, models, and samplings of natural resources; to interpret the effect of regional, state, national, and world events on the county; to make the record available to the general public; and to stimulate the interest of local people in the history of the county. The Society has a board of twelve elected members from throughout the county, three staff members, and volunteers. Funding sources include the Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission, Bradford County United Way, the Allen F. Pierce Foundation, and members and supporters from throughout the region and beyond. 52

OUR HISTORY

Manley-Bohlayer Farm The historic and picturesque ManleyBohlayer Farm is a unique cultural and community center just outside of Canton that draws in people of all ages for creative classes and events. The farm, owned by Rekindle the Spirit, Inc., is best known as the site of the annual Pennsylvania Apple & Cheese Festival in October, and is a living preservation and showcase of early farm life in the county. The farm was built in the 1860s and the land has a rich agricultural history. There are heritage gardens surrounding the 1870 farmhouse, and a number of artifacts associated with local farm history are on site. It was, of course, a working farm, and was in the Manley family for several generations until it was purchased by Franklin Bohlayer. He died in 1987 and eventually the property was purchased by Rekindle the Spirit, Inc., a local history preservation group. The house space and grounds can be rented for weddings, reunions, bridal or baby showers, club meetings, Christmas parties, and other private functions, says Lucy Chamberlain, president of Rekindle the Spirit, Inc. Other bygone-era buildings on the property include a blacksmith shop, community building, cider mill, one-room schoolhouse, and a barn. Some of the historic buildings, such as the community building and one-room schoolhouse, were relocated from other locations around Canton. Community members have donated items to aid in the historic preservation of these buildings, including vintage school desks, maps, flags and “things that have been in the old schoolhouses locally,” Lucy says. Many years ago, the community building was the site of a voting precinct. The voting booths are still inside, she notes. Rekindle the Spirit’s largest event, the annual Pennsylvania Apple & Cheese Festival, is held the first full weekend in October, and features local handcrafters, agricultural products, area musicians, and a fine arts and photography show. The farm’s cider press, which was donated by a community member and rebuilt, churns out liquid gold throughout the weekend. Other annual events include the Canton Wine and Cheese Festival the fourth Saturday in June, and a Victorian Christmas the first Saturday in December. Throughout the year, a variety of hands-on classes are offered for adults and children. Creative possibilities include jewelry making, basket weaving, painting, and blacksmithing. Children’s workshops are offered in the summer; Lucy, who teaches art in the Troy Area School District, leads them. Topics covered last summer included painting, fitness, music, and robotics. BOUTIQUES & SPECIALTY SHOPS

Home Textile Tool Museum The Home Textile Tool Museum in Orwell (www.hometextiletoolmuseum. org), part of the Route 6 Artisan Trail, completed a phenomenal summer season of eighteen programs and workshops last year, and is looking forward to a fabulous 2018. This unique hands-on museum specializes in the tools and skills used to produce textiles in our region in the early 1800s. The collection includes a number of spinning wheels made by the Farnham family of Owego, New York, including a Farnham great wheel. Founder Bill Ralph believed strongly in not just displaying tools but teaching people how to use them, and his philosophy continues to guide activities at the museum. Over 400 visitors, including a couple from Chile, enjoyed activities and programs that included basket making, weaving, dying yarn, blacksmithing, rug making, and sheep shearing. Johannes Zinzendorf ’s Flax Day drew an enthusiastic audience and Pat Hilts’ three-day Timber Frame Loom workshop was also well attended. In addition to the varied programs and workshops at the museum, there was excitement and anticipation about ongoing renovation of the Orwell Grange Hall building across the road. The museum purchased it in 2015; a variety of repairs and modifications will make the building useable for workshops, special programs, exhibits, and storage. Originally organized by local residents in 1913, there were eighty-seven charter members of Orwell Grange #1561. Grange is a national farmers’ organization with local and regional chapters. Associated with the Populist movement, historically Granges held social and educational events, set up cooperative buying and marketing groups for farmers and advocated for programs and policies that reduced isolation and improved the lives of farm families. The Grange was influential in the establishment of rural libraries, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, rural mail delivery, and many of the other services that rural residents enjoy today. Formed in 1867, the Grange was at its peak in the late 1800s, with as many as 1.5 million members nationwide. The museum is proud to be able to repurpose this historic Grange Hall. The Home Textile Tool Museum is at 1819 Orwell Hill Road in Orwell and is open Saturdays in the summer. The museum welcomes everyone and has ramps for all the buildings. Workshops and programming are being planned now and will be listed on the museum website early in the new year. Opening day in 2018 is Saturday, May 19. Call (570) 247-7175 for more information and plan to stop in. 58

The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce (www.pennyorkvalley.com) represents the historically rich Valley communities from both Pennsylvania and New York, including Athens, Sayre, Waverly, and the smaller, vibrant towns and boroughs dotting the countryside. Rt. 17) straddles the Twin Tiers of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania and offers easy access to an exciting blend of natural beauty, a host of unique restaurants, shops, and lodging options, and numerous thriving businesses and Main Streets. The Central Bradford County Chamber celebrates the communities of Wysox and Towanda (don’t miss the scenic Veterans Memorial Bridge that connects them). The Chamber hosts an active calendar of events such as mixers and workshops, and celebrations like Oktoberfest and the halfway to Saint Paddy’s Day Irish Fesitval. The Chamber hosts the Bingo Booth and Riverfest, one of the biggest happenings in Bradford County. You can friend the Central Bradford County Chamber of Commerce on Facebook for up-to-date information on all the latest in those communities, or visit www. towandawysox.com. The Troy Chamber of Commerce (www.troychamberofcommerce.com) describes its location as the “crossroads of historical Routes 6 and 14.” The area plays host to a wonderful mix of events throughout the year, including the Endless Mountains Maple Festival, the Endless Mountains Heritage Festival, and the Troy Fair. The outdoor recreation options in the nearby State Game Lands on Armenia Mountain include hunting, fishing, and camping. Troy has a charming downtown, with tree-lined streets, Victorian homes, and businesses ranging from specialty shops to great pizza. Don’t miss anything Troy has to offer.
