Experience Bradford County 2019
I
t’s always difficult to find a vacation destination that satisfies the needs of everyone in a family. Well, look no further! There is something for everyone in Bradford County!
Are you an adventurous outdoorsman? Bradford County is your one stop for everything imaginable including camping, hunting, fishing, kayaking, and hiking. Are you a social butterfly? Come visit one of our many fairs or festivals hosting live music concerts, food and wine tastings, and arts and crafts, to name a few. History buff? Not to worry, as you can choose from over a dozen museums, heritage villages, and historical societies to fill your urge to learn. Perhaps it is relaxation you’re after? Come walk the postcard-like streets, ducking in and out of our eclectic shops before taking in a romantic dinner overlooking the rolling hills. But what really makes Bradford County special? It’s the people! With so much to see and do, your experience will never be richer than when it’s shared with local residents to warmly welcome you and share in your experiences. Bradford County is your home away from home! I invite everyone from everywhere to come “Experience Bradford County”! Robyn Cummings Executive Director Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
The Troy Fair and Its Garden of Exhibitors They say it takes a village to raise a child, and the Troy Fair has its own kind of village that produces this week-long extravaganza every year. According to fair president Cathy Jenkins, there are twelve fair directors, and under them are over twenty department heads, and under the department heads there are multiple committees all working together to give the public a class act county fair. And, of course, there are hundreds of volunteers as well, and dozens and dozens of exhibitors. The two exhibit halls housing the home arts and the vegetables, flowers, photography, and apiary, among other things, provide fairgoers with an abundance of sensory perceptions and beautiful colors. The Troy Fair is a true farm fair, showcasing farm animals and all of the other things that grow on Bradford County farms. And there are, of course, multiple entertainment and gastronomic opportunities, including the pig races, demolition derby, tractor pull, amusement rides and arcade, quilt exhibits, headline acts in the grandstand, plus all kinds of food vendors, from blooming onions to ice cream. Cathy says planning starts on the next year’s fair as soon as the gates close on the current one. For example, some unwanted weather during the 2018 fair closed the amusement rides halfway through the week. This led to a big change for 2019. Cathy says the decision was made to change the layout of the fair to avoid that situation in the future. The camping area will now be where the rides and amusements were previously located, and the rides and amusements will be on higher ground where the camping area had been. Vendors will be set up all around the race track, and all of this should make the fair able to withstand anything Mother Nature might unleash. 2019 will be the 144th year that the Troy Fair will spring up in Alparon Park, at the junction of Route 6 and Route 14. It is always held the fourth week in July, so dates for the 2019 fair are July 22 through July 27. You can purchase discounted gate passes prior to the fair—those do not include rides, so they’re great for anyone who is not a fan of things that spin around or go up and down really fast. Once the fair is underway, however, all gate passes will be eight dollars and do include rides. With an average attendance of 50,000, the Troy Fair directors, department heads, committees, and volunteers must be doing something right. See troyfair.com for up-to-date information. 18

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
Towanda’s RiverFest As the Susquehanna River twists and turns through the heart of Pennsylvania’s Northern Tier, it has shaped the history of the towns nestled along its banks. Each town has a unique relationship with the river, and Towanda is no exception. For the last thirty-one years, this small borough has celebrated its river heritage with the annual RiverFest. RiverFest—the dates are August 15-17 for 2019— was started by two town merchants, Anne Sturzen and Kaye Connell, along with Main Street managers Jim Zubler, Jim Stewart, and Steve Lattimer, to celebrate the end of the summer vacation season with end of the season sidewalk sales. These days, thousands gather in Towanda for fun on the banks of the river along Merrill Parkway, and it is one of the most popular venues in the area for family and class reunions. The carnival—now a big part of the festival—began in the mid-’90s, according to Jim Haight, co-chair of the RiverFest Committee, when RiverFest got its first Ferris wheel. The party has continued to expand ever since, with the help of local service organizations and dedicated volunteers, and now includes a full carnival and local musical groups for evening entertainment. Headliners like American Idol’s Aaron Kelly and Flipside have also appeared. Be sure to bring your appetite when you visit RiverFest. Barbecued chicken from the local fire company, pulled pork from St. Agnes School, funnel cakes, fresh lemonade, ice cream, cotton candy, and more await you and your fork. If you need to burn off some of those calories, plenty of activities are available for those so inclined. Past events have included kayak and canoe paddles down the river, and a 5K walk or run. Kid-centered entertainment has in past years included jugglers, dancers, magicians, and karaoke contests. Saturdays are the pinnacle of RiverFest, and typically begin with an event like 2017’s hotrod cruise-in. Saturday night features one of the most impressive firework displays in the area. All in all, Borough Manager Kyle Lane says this is an end-of-summer celebration not to be missed, with live music, a street carnival, Little Miss and Mr. RiverFest Pageant, Pretty Baby Contest, Pretty Pet Contest, and most local service organizations participating with games and food. Be sure to put RiverFest number thirty-two on your calendar, and remember—admission is free! ~ Elaine Farkas 20

FESTIVALS AND EVENTS
Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival Nestled in the Endless Mountains is the tiny town of Wyalusing, founded in 1887, and host for fifteen years to an annual celebration of local and regional wines, delicious food, music, and vendors. The town is steeped in history—Native Americans had established the village of ‘M’chwihilusing, meaning “home of the honorable warrior.” The name was later changed to the more easily pronounceable Wyalusing, though it can still prove to be a tongue twister for some. It could also be said history is what created the Wyalusing Wine Festival, now being added to the fall itinerary of many local wine connoisseurs and held Saturday, September 14 at 80 Fifth Street, Wyalusing. According to Morgan Clinton, curator of the Wyalusing Valley Museum and wine festival planning committee member, the festival began as a fundraiser for the Wyalusing Valley Museum. The museum, which recently moved to downtown Wyalusing, preserves and shares the history of the region. It was clear in the beginning that if the event was going to get off the ground it would need more volunteers, Morgan says. The local Lions and Lioness group was approached to join forces in the festival’s inception, and since then the event has expanded to help raise funds for that organization as well. The Wyalusing Lions Club provides donations to over a dozen local and national service organizations as well as support for local victims of fire and catastrophic illness. The first festival showcased just five wineries. Nowadays there are typically at least a dozen, each offering delectable samplings of their products and helping to develop an interest in cultivars and in the local area. There is plenty of seating, and a wine-check service so festival-goers don’t have to carry their bottles around while they enjoy the event. For running enthusiasts, the North Branch Triathlon takes place the morning of the wine festival. “Wyalusing is a beautiful place, and we think the festival provides a good excuse for a weekend trip to the area,” Morgan says. “It is a great opportunity to try some Pennsylvania wines, dance to some fabulous music, and enjoy the beauty of September along the Susquehanna.” Plan to sample wine from Antler Ridge Winery Inc., Benigna’s Creek Vineyard, Capra Collina Winery, Deep Roots Hard Cider, Grovedale Winery, Hidden Creek Vineyard & Winery, Juniata Valley Winery, Nimble Hill Winery, Pickering Winery, Sand Castle Winery, Kulpmont Winery, and Staggering Unicorn. Take advantage of the free parking and admission, and then kick back at one of the many concerts on the new outdoor stage. There will be a food court with tables and seating, so grab a snack and take a seat—or dance if you are feeling the beat! And there’s the art. The goal of the Athens Arts4All Festival, say the organizers, is to get people—artists, art-lovers, and everybody in between—immersed in art with interactive displays, shows, and classes. There will be multiple make-and-take classes where, for example, you can create your own kiln dried pottery to show off to friends and family at your next backyard gathering. There will also be a new community art project, during which participants will be creating a painted art garden. Student artisans will be returning to share new skills with attendees. Dozens of vendors will be selling their work as well as creating it, so you can watch in awe as they paint or sculpt something beautiful right before your eyes. Did we mention the festival is the week before Mother’s Day? It is an opportune time to browse for a gift for someone special. The festival coordinators are very grateful for the wonderful response for last year’s inaugural event. With over 6,000 attendees, the non-profit organization spearheading Arts4All was able to donate $4,500 to art and music programs in the Athens Area School District. And, by listening to comments and feedback, they’ve been able to integrate some great changes and expansions to better suit everyone’s needs. In a tightknit community there are often many established annual events that the locals know and love. Creating something new takes dedication, perseverance, and great coordinators, plus hours upon hours of planning and hard work. The rewards are, well, artful, and that is exactly what you will find at the Athens Arts4All Festival. Check out athensarts4all.com for more information. ~ Alyssa Strausser 24

Canton Wine & Cheese Festival The Canton Wine and Cheese festival is the perfect venue for adventurous wine drinkers and cheese eaters, and, for eleven years now, the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce and Rekindle the Spirit have worked together to make this celebration of deliciousness possible. Did you know that Pennsylvania ranks fifth in the nation for milk production, and has the second largest number of dairy farms of all fifty states? Production of fresh milk, and all the good things made from it (just try to visit all the area’s ice cream stands during the summer months!), abounds in the region, and it’s nice to know that a high percentage of these farms are still family owned. However, no dairy product is as ubiquitous as cheese (sorry, ice cream lovers!). Cheese as an appetizer, cheese as a side, and in some places, cheese as a dessert. Almost everyone has a favorite cheese, and every cheese has a personality to match. Pennsylvania’s artisanal cheese industry is flourishing, with Bradford County and its Northern Tier environs enjoying their own version of burgeoning popularity in that delightful dairy delectable. But, one cannot live by cheese alone. So, what better complements a tart wedge of Pennsylvania cheddar or a slice of the Keystone State’s creamy Gouda than a smooth glass of wine? And guess what? We have that, too! Along with innovation in artisanal cheeses and other milk products, our unique terroir offers a new palate potential for local winemakers and wine afficionados. Pennsylvania includes microclimates that are conducive to the growing of well-known European varietals like Reislings, Gerwurztraminers, and merlots. The Keystone State is, in fact, poised on unique ground, fertile for wine-based exploration. The terroir here is not as well defined in viticulture as its nearby Finger Lakes neighbors, and that is all the more reason to explore and experiment with the fruit of the vine. So, celebrating the region’s dairy history and viticulture at another local legend, the Manley-Bohlayer farm, every June—the fourth Saturday, to be precise—is, as they say, a no-brainer. The festival offers a wide variety of wines (Pennsylvania’s wines have been described as a bridge between old world European style wines, and their fruitier New World counterparts) and cheeses from Bradford County and beyond, as well as local crafts, music, and food. The parking is free; the fifteen dollar tasting ticket includes a commemorative wine glass; if you’re under twenty-one or the designated driver, your ticket is just five dollars. From Snake Oil to Modern Medicine The Heritage Village and Farm Museum at Alparon Park in Troy has a must-see exhibit that opened in May of 2018—“Snake Oil to Modern Medicine—A Story of Medicine in Bradford and Surrounding Counties.” “It took about fifteen people two years to get this exhibit up and running,” says Debbie Lutz, Bradford County Heritage Association board of directors member and co-chair of the annual Pennsylvania Heritage Festival, which takes place on the third weekend in September. Since the exhibit was so complex and time-consuming to put together, it will remain up until the end of 2019. At the start of the exhibit, you will find the text of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 which mandated what must and must not be included on drug labels. Debbie picks up an old bottle from the snake oil wagon with a label that interpreted the act tongue in cheek. “See, it says ‘Manufactured under Government Snoopervision,’ and ‘Plain Risky,’” she laughs, pointing at the label. The exhibit provides a somber depiction of a Civil War MASH/mobile hospital set-up, with a bloody medic and a soldier with an amputated leg. Debbie says a soldier’s chance of surviving an amputation was better in a field hospital than with a “city doctor,” because in the field the leg was amputated right away. The city doctor might try to do various things to save a leg and end up waiting until it was too late, and the patient would subsequently die from infection. She notes that two thirds of the deaths during the Civil War were due to disease and not war injuries. Another fascinating part of the exhibit is a display of a Civil Defense Packaged Disaster Hospital, “a 200-bed hospital in crates,” quips Debbie. The packaged disaster hospital on exhibit at the Farm Museum is from 1958, and was originally stored in Burlington at the Bradford County Manor. It was designed to have enough supplies to keep a community’s health services functioning for thirty days in the event of a national disaster/emergency. The kit included an entire foldable operating room, X-ray equipment, medical supplies, a generator, and a potable water container that could be used as a commode when the water was gone—all with explicit instructions. This featured exhibit and the rest of the museum and Heritage Village are in Alparon Park, on the corner of routes 6 and 14. It is open Thursday through Sunday, from the first weekend in May to the last weekend in October. The 2019 Pennsylvania Heritage Festival will be held on the grounds September 21 and 22. Pennsylvania Apple & Cheese Festival You can call it the Canton Apple and Cheese Festival, or you can call it the Pennsylvania Apple & Cheese Festival, but most certainly do call it a “don’t miss this one.” In 1989, a small festival featuring apples and cheeses debuted in Canton, well before the idea of combining wine and cheese tastings with festivals became all the rage. Organizers dubbed it the Canton Apple and Cheese Festival, but, as it grew in size and popularity, it was later re-christened the Pennsylvania Apple and Cheese Festival, becoming a weekend destination event for locals and visitors alike. So, these days, the first full weekend of October, you can walk through the Pennsylvania Apple & Cheese Festival and take in the abundance of autumn in Bradford County—locally produced crafts and amazing things to eat, including, of course, local cheeses and apples and those famous homemade apple dumplings from the East Canton Methodist Church. When the festival first started, there were three large apple orchards operating in the area. Canton/Bradford County also had a vibrant farming history (more on that sector in a minute). But something was needed to spur some growth as well as showcase the community’s agricultural roots. A grant from the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau made the first event possible and now, thirty years later, it boasts hundreds of food and craft vendors, free entertainment, and an art and photography exhibit, all of which have contributed to making it a premier event in northeastern Pennsylvania. In 1999, the festival incorporated and took back the name of Rekindle the Spirit, the original entity that birthed the festival. In 2000, the organization purchased the historic Manley-Bohlayer farm, the festival’s site, and began programs, classes, and displays showing how a farm worked in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The farm, founded in 1821, was a working farm well into the 1980s. The goal of the festival has always been to promote the Canton area by showcasing its agricultural, historical, and cultural history, but also supporting the economy’s development, notes Angie Schoonover, one of the event organizers. And they’re hoping to make the event better each year. “In 2018 we focused on small, local acoustic acts, and improving our children’s area with fun entertainment for the whole family,” says Angie. Find out more about the most up-to-date plans for the festival at paapplecheese.com, and about the events and classes scheduled at the historic Manley-Bohlayer Farm at rekindlethespirit.com. ~ Lisa Howeler 30

Sayre Christmas Parade Do you believe in magic? Do you long for that lost innocence of being a child on Christmas morning, wide-eyed and wondrous, waking up on what you believe is the best day of the year? There is the fragrance of the twinkling Christmas tree as you gather around, anxiously waiting to open gifts. There is the savory dinner shared with family, and eating so much you have to take a nap. We oftentimes let ourselves grow out of this mindset and lose sight of what made Christmas so special as a child. But you can recapture the holiday spirit at the Sayre Christmas Parade, and watch the magic come back to life before your eyes. As many as 8,000 people have crowded the streets for this annual extravaganza. Families travel from all over, many returning to Sayre for that irreplaceable nostalgia of holidays at home. Many have children of their own, and love to watch the starry-eyed reactions of their little ones as Santa cruises by, smiling and waving from atop a firetruck. Santa may be the one constant, as each parade is unlike any other. “Many people think, ‘once you’ve seen one parade, you’ve seen them all’ and that is not the case here,” remarks Dave Jarrett, Sayre’s borough manager. Each year there are different musical, band, and dancing performances. Folks practice all year long, and purchase or design new costumes for each parade. One group has participated in the parade for twenty years. Some of the original performers now have children who have continued in their footsteps along the parade route. The borough purchases and distributes six hundred dollars worth of candy, a whole lot of treats for the Jolly Old Elf to distribute. “Santa Claus is more excited than anyone else about the parade,” laughs Dave. “He is very dedicated!” Every year children line up to visit with Santa, and each child receives a gift package which can include gift cards or even a new bicycle. The parade’s smooth operation is owed to all of the devoted sponsors and volunteers who dedicate their time to the success of the event. Because of this, the parade is always hometown themed and has a true hometown feel. The Sayre Christmas Parade is on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, at 6:30 p.m. It starts at West Lockhart Street near Sayre High School. Find out more at sayreborough.org or on Facebook; be sure to check out “Growing Up In The Valley/Memory Lane” on Facebook as well for loads of pictures and videos from previous parades. ~ Alyssa Strausser 36

The Shooter’s Gauntlet Think you’ve got what it takes to nail the center of a target at 1,500 yards, orchestrate your own escape or a friend’s in a staged hostage/ kidnapping scene, crawl, shoot, and maneuver your way through an extreme assault/hike, all in an offthe-grid mountaintop compound? Oh, and BTW, all with live weapons? If this pokes at your deepdown desire for adventure, head to the Shooter’s Gauntlet, nestled in the mountains of Monroeton, for a top-of-the-bucket-list experience. If you’re wondering about the origins of the place, picture a “redneck, backyard shooting competition,” chuckles owner Bob Raimo. “My best friend from New York invited me up to his place with a group of friends. We screwed a target to an old tire and shot at it while it rolled down a hill. This became an annual thing that grew a little bit bigger every year.” When the gun laws changed in New York, the group decided to move their yearly tradition to Pennsylvania. So, what started as a friendly competition between a group of friends grew, piece by piece, to an adrenalinebased business, ultimately resulting in the Shooter’s Gauntlet. Its grand opening was in May of 2016, with the first Machine Gun Shoot. Now, Shooter’s Gauntlet accommodates corporate events, parties, and just about any group of people interested in this sort of adventuring. Bob and his staff also offer private training classes. For the ladies who are looking for heart-pounding exhilaration, don’t be intimidated. The Shooter’s Gauntlet has hosted private events for all-women groups such as The WellArmed Woman, Shoot Like a Girl, and Girlz N Guns. “The ladies love us!” Bob boasts. “We are very professional, respectful, and tons of fun.” It may be time to ditch the typical Vegas-style bachelorette scene and have the time of your life with some explosive fun. To date, the Machine Gun Shoots (there are three scheduled for 2019) are the only public events at Shooter’s Gauntlet, but they are family-friendly, and everyone is welcome. Otherwise, the only way to access this thrill-seeker’s paradise/gunman’s theme park is to rent the facility, take a class, or sign on for a training. There are big plans to expand it into the largest outdoor sporting show on the East coast, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can arrange to test your skills at the facility’s four different ranges. The main range is commonly used for machine guns, the tactical range is for handgun practice, and the long (1,200-yard) and extreme (1,500-yard) ranges are for long distance rifles. For more information or to book your adventure with Bob, visit the place “Where Freedom And Adventure Collide!” at 3904 Millstone Road, call (484) 883-9067, or go to shootersgauntlet.com. 38

Endless Mountain Outfitters What is this business of “outfitting?” You might (as this writer did) perhaps, assume it to be something like a tailoring business for folks of a rugged and tough nature. A woodsman (or woman) doesn’t just get “fitted” for his jeans, he gets “outfitted,” right? When you walk into an “outfitting” shop, might you be measured by a surly old lumberjack type who would growl at you for not being fit enough to venture into the outdoors? Well, maybe, but…fear not. Outfitting is a business, the business of taking folks into the great outdoors to live, and breathe, deeply. While many shops do in fact carry the appropriate gear and clothing for local expeditions, an outfitter is more than a merchant—he or she is a guide, a guide to a proper and safe adventure experience in the real outdoors. There are those who feel that there is no better place on earth to have that experience than right here, on our own Susquehanna River. And who better to be your guide than folks who live here and love not only being on the water but all kinds of outdoor adventure? Endless Mountain Outfitters is a thriving local shop located in Sugar Run, along a serene bend in the Susquehanna River just south east of Wyalusing. Owners Keith and Amy Brown, both teachers at the Towanda Area School District, bought the business in 2018 from David and Melody Buck, who had founded it in 2002. They specialize in water-based expeditions, focusing on providing unique outdoor experiences, and drawing in both the newbies and the seasoned adventurers to Bradford County and the Susquehanna. Some of the unique experiences EMO offers include themed river paddles such as the river clean-up, paint and paddle, cider and cheese paddle, wine and cheese paddle, pumpkin paddle, pirate paddle (pet parrots are requested to be left at home), and cameras and kayaks. And speaking of kayaks, EMO sells the very best in kayaks, new and used, including Wilderness Systems, Dagger, Perception, and Mad River. Shoppers will find sales a few times throughout the year, and you can always “try it before you buy it.” To book a trip, check river conditions, or learn more, call Endless Mountain Outfitters at (570) 746-9140 or visit their website at emo444.com. EMO also offers shuttle service for river rats who bring their own boats. ~ Elaine Farkas 40

Wyalusing North Branch Triathlon Can you name the event in Bradford County that has nearly doubled its participation in the last two years? Here’s a hint: think demanding athletic event coupled with stunning natural scenery. Answer: the Wyalusing North Branch Triathlon. More than sixty participants braved the triple threat of running 3.6 miles to the Terrytown River Access, paddling 4.5 miles to Sugar Run Endless Mountain Outfitters River Access, and biking 15.3 miles to Stowell, Pennsylvania. And back. The route for all this exertion may have to be changed slightly for the 2019 event. The impacts of the severe flooding the county experienced are still being felt, and organizers are working through the logistics of roads and hills that have been damaged. The easiest way to keep updated about the triathlon is to register your email at wyalusingnorthbranchtriathlon.com. You will receive information as soon as it is confirmed. The date will be in the same area of the calendar, which is mid-September. Registrations will be available online as well. While certainly not for the faint of heart, organizers do want to encourage armchair athletes to try a tri, so they have kept the route reasonable with a lot of paved roads and inclines that are described as gradual and gentle. But this is the real deal, with aid stations and an army of volunteers to be sure participants have everything they need. And if the sweat leaves your eyes for a bit, you will be treated to one of the prettiest spots in Bradford County. The Greater Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce hosts the event, with the idea that while there are many fun runs and marathons in the region, a true triathlon is a rare thing. For amateur athletes coming from outside the region, the chamber helps with providing info on accommodations and other attractions in the area, making it easy, once you’ve caught your breath, to turn race day into a vacation. If panting your way across the countryside is not your idea of a day well spent, you can still be involved. The North Branch Triathlon is always looking for volunteers and sponsors to help make the event a success, and to help with funding things like the timing chips and the awards. Contact the chamber at gwccbluegrass@gmail.com, and they will steer you toward a volunteer or sponsor opportunity. In the meantime, keep an eye out for information on one of the most challenging and unique events in the region. 42

GREAT OUTDOORS
Mt. Pisgah County Park You might know that there is a Mt. Pisgah State Park, but did you know there is a county park of the same name? Mt. Pisgah County Park in Springfield Township is 600 acres of beautiful forests, views, and wildlife, along with two pavilions, some great picnic spots, and three hiking trails—Ridge Trail, Wetona Trail, and Fox Trot Trail. And now, says Bradford County Parks Supervisor Travis Lemons, there’s camping. The first camping season was 2018, he says, and the new season will run from midApril to mid-October.
The mountain that the park was named for was “discovered” in 1817 by John Dobbins, Myron Ballard, and Elam Kendall, who had hiked to the area from Sugar Creek, about fifteen miles away. They spread the word after their visit that the site offered superior hunting grounds. It was Dobbins who said they should name the mountain “Pisgah,” reportedly saying, “From Pisgah’s top, I view the promised land.” In the Bible, Pisgah is translated as “mountain.” Later, the land was purchased by John Salisbury of Phelps, New York. He left the land that now includes the county park to his daughter, Mary, who married a well-known area photographer named Moses Gustin. An eighty-foot tower was built on the mountain, and, because it withstood the wind for many years, a story began that the spirit of the great Native American warrior Chief Wetona, who history says lived in the area, was saving the tower. Chief Wetona, an Oneida warrior who survived the Battle of Newtown (a Revolutionary War battle between the British and the Americans in Newtown, New York) is believed to have been buried on the mountain, but his body was later moved. The tower was torn down in 1918 after the harsh winds finally damaged it. In 1965, the Bradford County commissioners purchased the land that included the mountain, and, today, the county maintains the park, along with its three other parks— Larnard-Hornbrook, Sunfish Pond, and Cooks Pond. Travis notes that camping is now available not only at Mt. Pisgah but at Larnard-Hornbrook and Sunfish Pond. Mt. Pisgah County Park is about halfway between Troy and Towanda, just off Route 6. GREAT EATS
WindStone Landing Farms/ Delivered Fresh “There’s a new way to shop for groceries…” proclaims the promotional postcard from Delivered Fresh, and that new way means you, the shopper, and you, the eater, can get fresh foods from a few dozen regional farms, all in one convenient place. Actually, in several different convenient places. David Nowacoski, who owns and operates WindStone Landing Farms in East Smithfield with his wife, Marla, explains. “We started WindStone Landing Farms in April of 2013,” he relates. “I was doing the poultry [think chickens on pasture, fed non-medicated grains] and my wife was doing these amazing canned goods [think salsa, jams, soups]. We noticed we were heavy on the commercial sales, and we wanted to increase our direct-to-consumer sales.” They sold at farmer’s markets, he continues, and found that they were often asked about products they didn’t offer—beef, for instance. “We’d say, ‘No, we don’t do beef, but we know where we can get you some.’” One thing led to another, and by the end of 2017 they had over twenty families “who were getting all their groceries through us.” Not that WindStone Landing Farms was providing all the produce, baked and canned goods, meats, and cheeses, but David and Marla were handling the procurement and delivery in addition to running their own operation (David notes their farm is “on track for 5,000 chickens” and has an on-farm butcher shop as well as a commercial kitchen). And even though the farms where this wonderful array of fresh food was coming from were all local, local in the Twin Tiers can mean a round trip of a couple hundred miles. The arrangements, David continues, were “done via text messaging.” At one point, he adds, “my wife said ‘this is nuts.’” So, with a background in computer science, he put his skills to work at designing an online ordering system. Less than a year later, there are nearly forty area farms providing up to 300 different products (including the only nonfood item—oh-so-soft alpaca socks!) through Delivered Fresh. “We have a ton of stuff on there, all locally sourced, chemical-free, pasture-raised,” David says. Customers order via the website or by phone, and then pick up their straight-fromthe-farm products—which David and Marla have “harvested”—at one of several regional drop-off sites. “We’re trying something different,” David notes. “We’re trying to help small farms be successful.” By making it convenient for individuals and restaurants to buy local, to easily experience the taste and nutritional benefits of fresh food, “we all win.” There are drop-off sites in Troy, Sayre, Monroeton, Mansfield, and Wellsboro. Order what you want, when you want, with no contracts, fees, or minimum purchases. Order at deliveredfresh.store or call (570) 258-8096. OUR HISTORY
Sayre Historical Society Mike Frantz is on a mission, and that, he says, is “to preserve the history of Sayre and present it to the public.” To that end, he serves with a dozen or so other dedicated Sayre area residents as a volunteer and a board officer with the Sayre Historical Society. The Sayre Historical Society, at 103 N. Lehigh Avenue, found its home in 2002 at the old Lehigh Valley Railroad passenger train station. The stately Victorian-era building has a research library, museum, gift shop, two model trains, and meeting rooms where the society hosts genealogy workshops, a variety of history programs, and guest speakers. The museum houses some of Sayre’s past, including photos, military uniforms, railroad lanterns, and church and hospital memorabilia. One of the most prized exhibits is a railroad caboose that was built in 1941 in Sayre. The Lehigh Valley Railroad Caboose No. 95011 was one of 140 all-steel railroad cabooses built at the Sayre Shops between the 1930s and 1940s. The caboose weighs 44,000 pounds and is referred to as a “Northeast style” caboose. It served on the Lehigh Valley Railroad for a number of years and was eventually sold to Conrail. Local historian Frank Evans located it at the Enola Yards near Harrisburg, and the Valley Railroad Museum purchased it for $2,000. The caboose was repainted, and new windows and cushions were installed. In 1991, it was relocated to Sayre and became part of the town’s centennial celebration. The other main piece in the museum is a scale model train that includes Lehigh Valley Railroad’s steam locomotive No. 218. The model was built more than 100 years ago by Sayre resident Michael Gorman. Mr. Gorman, who was a railroad engineer, called the model Donald, named after his five-year-old son, who died of scarlet fever. The model has been all over the country, returning to Sayre several years ago when Mr. Gorman’s granddaughter passed away and willed the model train to her son, Mick Koons, who lives in California. Mr. Koons is currently loaning the model train to the museum. The museum also has a series of rotating exhibits—recent exhibits included World War I memorabilia and the works of prolific Sayre artist M. Louis Gore. Mr. Gore created murals, paintings, and photographs, and one of his murals can still be seen at Sayre High School. The Historical Society museum is open Wednesdays from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. For more information call (570) 882-8221, visit sayrehistoricalsociety.org, or find them on Facebook. ~ Melissa Farenish 54

OUR HISTORY
One Washington Street It wasn’t such a long time ago that railroads were the lifeblood of communities like Towanda. An 1895 railroad map of Bradford County shows the Pennsylvania and New York line following the Susquehanna’s meandering path through the middle of the county. The Northern Central is on the county’s west side, and the Barclay, and the State Line and Sullivan lines, are in the south central section. In Towanda in 1884, the powers-that-be with the Pennsylvania and New York railroad put up a big brick building as a freight depot; other rail lines, including the Barclay, and the State Line and Sullivan, subsequently used it as a station. These days, that big brick building at 1 Washington Street is home to Dr. Ryan Napp’s chiropractic office and to the Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency. Executive Director Robyn Cummings couldn’t be happier with her digs. “We purchased it in May (2018) from Dr. Napp, who still has office space here,” she says, describing him affectionately as one of those county residents who left the area to go to school and then “came back to grow where he was planted.” “The building is historic, and eclectic, and appealed to us,” she continues. “It’s on the water, it’s in the center of the county, and it’s very accessible.” She says the agency’s original site, just a block away, “was a great place to get started,” but, as the organization grows and evolves, having its own space has been and will continue to be beneficial. Especially when that space is culturally and historically significant. It’s been, in addition to a freight depot and a train station, a regional arts council facility and a popular restaurant. It’s the Weigh Station, Robyn says, that a lot of visitors seem to remember the most, and they often comment on what they may have had to eat when they were there. She likens it to “walking back into someone’s house” after being away for a while. “What we love is that it still has the hardwood floors that show their wear a little bit,” Robyn continues. “The upstairs conference room has skylights, and it is a really neat space. There is exposed brick, and the old bar [from the restaurant days] in here that we use for a work space. We didn’t change the character of the space. “This is where we’ll be,” she continues, “and we’re looking forward to expanding our office hours. We’ll continue to grow and develop the space so it operates like a true visitors’ bureau.” Make 1 Washington Street a stop on your travels as you Experience Bradford County. DAY TO DAY IN BRADFORD COUNTY Moving to a new area is never easy. There is so much to learn about. Often, discovering the whens and whys of community events or exploring an unfamiliar region’s must-see natural wonders ends up far down on the to-do list. Lori Wentzel felt that way. Relocated to Bradford County in 2002, Lori wanted to know her new home well, but it took a while to really get around and see all that the county had to offer. Once she did, she was convinced that Bradford had a lot of what visitors want to see. “Gorgeous natural resources, quaint towns, lots of history,” Lori ticks off the pluses of the northeast corner of the Keystone State. “I joined some organizations, but wanted to do something more to lift the profile of the area.” Social media to the rescue. Lori started accounts on Facebook and Instagram under the title “Day to Day in Bradford County PA.” She travels the county roads, photographing events, businesses, and the landscape itself to share with area residents and folks looking for a great place to visit. “There is so much you miss when you’re going about your daily routine. I feel like my eyes are truly open now to all the beauty around me,” Lori says. “Just think of the history, the people who settled this area. Some of the towns still exist, but some are gone. Those settlers had hopes and dreams and a hardworking spirit that you can still see today.” More than 1,700 people enjoy Lori’s Facebook photos, which come complete with helpful information such as directions and businesses’ hours of operation. Plus, Lori is always willing to answer questions. On a snowy day, she suggests that the Riverwalk in Towanda would still be gorgeous, and that you can read a story from the signs posted along the path. There are anecdotes about the local VFWs and the hero banners that many communities have up to honor their veterans. Mt. Pisgah State Park gets a lot of warranted attention, as Lori says people often comment that they did not know the park was so extensive. The comments reflect the exact impact Lori was hoping to have. “Thank you for reminding me how beautiful our home is,” one resident writes. “Even if you have lived here for a long time, these places deserve more than one visit,” Lori says. “I’ve been everywhere and I’d go back to every one of them!” Lori invites you along for the ride. Check out “Day to Day in Bradford County PA” and re-discover the hidden gem of northeast Pennsylvania. ~ Maggie Barnes 60

BECOMING A LOCAL
Our Chambers of Commerce The Wyalusing area is where the gift of the past joins with the present. The Greater Wyalusing Area Chamber of Commerce (wyalusing.net) is committed to presenting events such as A Day of Bluegrass Festival, the North Branch Triathlon, and other unique happenings that showcase the history, the magnificent Susquehanna River, and the area’s bucolic settings. These events are fun for residents and visitors alike, and offer both the opportunity to enjoy everything this part of Bradford County has to offer, from restaurants, hotels, and Main Street businesses, to outdoor adventures like kayaking, hiking, and taking in the famous Marie Antoinette overlook. The Greater Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce welcomes all to experience an area filled with opportunities focused on business, leisure, and history. Canton calls itself “the friendly town,” and it will only take one visit to concur with that assessment. The Canton Chamber (cantonareachamberofcommerce.com) showcases the warmth of this historic community all year with a full slate of events including festivals celebrating local wines, cheeses, and apples, a classic car show, a block dance, and so much more. Canton has even convinced Santa himself to light up the downtown when it’s time to kick off the holidays. Canton’s rich history, hard-working residents, and beautiful scenery all give the chamber plenty to offer tourists, businesses, and residents alike. Plan your visit soon. The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce (pennyorkvalley.com) represents the historically rich Valley communities from both Pennsylvania and New York, including Athens, Sayre, Waverly, and the smaller, vibrant towns and boroughs dotting the countryside. A goldmine of hidden gems awaits at exits 60 and 61 of the Southern Tier Expressway. Interstate 86 (aka Rt. 17) straddles the Twin Tiers of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania and offers easy access to an exciting blend of natural beauty, a host of unique restaurants, shops, and lodging options, and numerous thriving businesses and Main Streets. The Central Bradford County Chamber celebrates the communities of Wysox and Towanda (don’t miss the scenic Veterans Memorial Bridge that connects them). The Chamber hosts an active calendar of events such as mixers and workshops, and celebrations like Hometown Christmas. The Chamber hosts the Bingo Booth at Riverfest, one of the biggest happenings in Bradford County. You can friend the Central Bradford County Chamber of Commerce on Facebook for up-to-date information on all the latest in those communities, or visit towandawysox.com. The Troy Chamber of Commerce (troychamberofcommerce.com) describes its location as the “crossroads of historical Routes 6 and 14” at the heart of the Endless Mountains. The area plays host to a wonderful mix of events throughout the year, including the Endless Mountains Maple Festival, the PA Heritage Festival, and the Troy Fair. Recreation options include the nearby State Game Lands on Armenia Mountain (hunting, fishing, camping) and Mt. Pisgah State and County Parks (hiking, water activities), as well as outdoor sporting facilities in and near the town. Troy has a charming downtown, with tree-lined streets, Victorian homes, and businesses including bed and breakfasts/inns, specialty shops, and welcoming eateries. Don’t miss anything Troy has to offer. 62
