Wyalusing Wine Festival

Nestled between Towanda and Meshoppen, the tiny borough of Wyalusing hosts an annual celebration of local and regional wines, delicious food, music, and vendors. The Wyalusing Wine Festival, held the third Saturday in September at 80 Fifth Street, began as a fundraiser for the Wyalusing Valley Museum, and has since expanded to help raise funds for the Wyalusing Lions Club. There are typically at least a dozen wineries, each offering delectable samplings of their products. There is plenty of seating, a wine-check service, and, for the athletically inclined, the North Branch Triathlon takes place the morning of the festival, giving bikers, runners, and canoers/kayakers their chance to shine. “It is a great opportunity to try some Pennsylvania wines, dance to some fabulous music, and enjoy the beauty of September along the Susquehanna, says Morgan Clinton, curator of the Wyalusing Valley Museum. For the latest visit wyalusignwinefestival.com. 20

GREAT OUTDOORS

Greener Pastures

promotes responsible farming and a love of the land.

“When I told my teaching colleagues that I was quitting to focus on the farm, they thought I’d lost my mind,” Nicole Harris laughs when she thinks about the life change that led her and husband, Steve, to open Greener Pastures Farm & Greenhouses. Begun in 2013 as a small farm, the operation has grown into a sustainable model that

More than a farm market, Greener Pastures also offer visitors a full-immersion experience. Want to get your hands dirty? Transplant a seedling in the greenhouse, pick vegetables, or feed the animals your leftovers from lunch. “We want you to see how we raise our animals, and why we choose to raise them on our pastures. If you are around during chore time, we will probably put you to work!” Nicole says. The self-proclaimed “funny farm” includes a farm-stay cabin, barns, round pen, two greenhouses, a high tunnel, farmstand, pastures, woods, and a pond—all to play in and explore. And it’s all about local with Nicole and family. They partner with other farms and growers in the area to feature their products. “The local community makes up the bulk of the business for our greenhouses, workshops, and farm products. We are lucky to have many customers that travel an hour for our sustainably grown plants. We actually grow our plants—which is unusual, as many garden center/farm markets just buy plants to resell. For the farm-stay, we have tourists that come to experience the Douglas Place on Armenia Mountain.” Like all farming families, Nicole says they work for their children—not only for the farm itself, but for the work ethic and connection to the land that it fosters. Her own grandparents started the locally famous and beloved Milky Way restaurant and milk jug operation in 1962, just outside of Troy. And while the Harris’s location on Armenia Mountain may seem remote, plans are in the works for even more experiences to bring folks out to the country. “We are building a maple sugarin’ house where we can offer additional hands-on educational experiences along with a base for summer day camps for kids. This past season, we hosted over twenty workshops and field trips to the farm,” says Nicole. Part business, part educational outreach, and part lifestyle statement, Greener Pastures is one family’s attempt to get people to think about where their food comes from, who grows it, and the sacrifices the farm life requires. Greener Pastures Farm & Greenhouses is located at 177 Douglas Road in Troy. Call (570) 337-0815 or visit greenerpasturesfarm.net for more information. GREAT OUTDOORS

Bradford County Conservation District Love’s benefits accumulate over time. In 1956, out of a love for healthy soil and clean water, the Bradford County Conservation District was born. Soil, water, air, plants, wildlife, and the people of Bradford County are the beneficiaries of BCCD’s commitment to the conservation of natural resources. The Soil Conservation Service, now called the Natural Resource Conservation Service (it’s part of the United States Department of Agriculture), saw the value of local leadership addressing the unique needs of each county. The passage of the Pennsylvania Conservation District Law allowed county Conservation Districts to be established. In Bradford County, the volunteer board of directors consists of four farmers, two public members, and one county commissioner. BCCD and NRCS partner in providing access to the technical and financial resources needed to put conservation practices on the ground. As district manager Cathy Yeakel says, “Our goal is to help solve problems!” To meet the growing complexity of issues facing conservation planning, the BCCD staff has grown to sixteen dedicated professionals handling a mix of subjects and programs. The early years of BCCD often found the staff laying out cropping contour strips and helping to improve tillage practices and crop rotation. In recent years, BCCD has responded to the Chesapeake Bay Program’s mandate to improve water quality by assisting the farm community in nutrient management planning. Landowners in stream corridors often seek BCCD assistance in stabilizing stream banks. The Dirt and Gravel Road Program works with municipalities to prevent roadway sedimentation from entering the waterways. Ag team leader Nate Dewing states, “I love creating good solutions that work as a gain for both the farm business and for natural resources.” A typical BCCD day might look like this: an ag team specialist assists a farmer in writing a manure management plan; another is on a barnyard construction site consulting with a contractor; another is explaining to a farmer how the District’s interseeder (which can plant a cover crop into a standing crop) benefits soil health; another is meeting with a landowner interested in farmland preservation; the county education specialist is presenting BCCD’s American Eel Program in a local elementary school; the administrative staff keeps the District office operating smoothly; the district engineer drafts plans for a manure containment project; a dirt and gravel road specialist meets with township supervisors; another inspects a roadway improvement; another is on a bid run with contractors; a watershed specialist conducts a pond survey; another meets a with watershed community; a permitting specialist inspects a construction site; the district manager hosts a training seminar for issuing emergency stream repair permits. The things we do for love! Contact the BCCD at (570) 485-3144. Find them at 200 Lake Road, Towanda, and at bccdpa.com. ~Leslie Bresee 24

Room at the Inns Rockgirt Historic Retreat in Canton was built in 1884 by Bishop Philip Brooks, and has had a long a well-loved life. These days it’s a bed and breakfast/retreat, where locals and visitors can enjoy a weekend or longer, take a class in Zentangles, or have some favorite artwork framed. “Rockgirt Historic Retreat is unique in Bradford County because we have both a large indoor space that can sleep up to fourteen guests and lots of outdoor space for guests to explore and enjoy,” says owner/proprietor Mary Beth Schoonover. “During the winter guests can sled, and during the summer they can enjoy the patio with beautiful views of our pond. Many guests have commented that they enjoy our library of local history books and resources. Guests interested in booking a whole house rental can find us on Airbnb. Individual room rentals are also available. We often host wedding parties for their pre- and post-ceremony preparations. It is wonderful to welcome visitors to Bradford County.” Find out more at airbnb.com/h/rockgirt, at rockgirt.com, or call (570) 673-3930. Stone Mountain Inn on Keene Summit in Wysox just celebrated its tenth year, and owners Bonnie and Ed Strosser couldn’t be more pleased. “We have thoroughly enjoyed meeting guests from all over the world,” says Bonnie. “We are deeply moved by the response from guests on how much they love the place and find it a place of rest and relaxation. Our family has grown beyond measure, as guests quickly become like family, as they return or stay in touch.” The Stone Mountain Inn property was first settled in the 1800s by the Lundy family; the Strossers purchased the property twenty-five-plus years ago. Today, guests can enjoy exploring seventy acres of trails and woods, then relax in the common room, play a game of billiards in the billiards room, or have a cocktail in the cozy stone bar. Find Stone Mountain Inn on Facebook, at thestonemountaininn.com, or call (570) 265-8846. And be sure to check out Ed’s original artwork at edstrosser.com. Victorian Charm Inn, on 118 York Avenue in Towanda, is a thirtyroom mansion built in 1897 by J.A. Decker, a wealthy banker and lumberman. Today’s owners are Jack and Mindy Coates, and they love being the innkeepers at this unique and historic home. The wraparound porch beckons, the original oak and cherry woodwork gleams, and each of the ten guestrooms fairly oozes, well, Victorian-era charm. “Over the past ten years, we have met so many people,” says Jack. “They have become lasting relationships.” The couple point to some signage in the home that epitomizes their feelings: “Enter as guests, leave as friends” and “May the roof over the inn never fall in, & may the friends that gather below never fall out…” Give the Coates a call at (570) 265-4452 or find the inn at thevictoriancharminn.com. ~ Gayle Morrow 26

GREAT EATS

Wyalusing Hotel While Chris Woodruff was growing up in Bradford County, he appreciated the Wyalusing Hotel both for its unique architectural style and its historical significance to the Endless Mountains region. Little did he know at the time, however, that he would become a very big part of that history. Chris, fifty-one, has owned the venerable hotel for twenty years now. “I always loved to go into the hotel and was always enamored with the place,” says Chris who, after a stint in the military, was in between jobs two decades ago when the opportunity to own the Wyalusing Hotel opened up. “I guess I didn’t have any long-term aspirations, but the previous owner was looking to get out, and I was looking to get in.” The rest, as they say, is history—which, by the way, fits in quite nicely with the narrative of the hotel that was built when Grover Cleveland was president in 1894. The original three-story hotel on Main Street, five minutes from the Susquehanna, has eleven rooms that are definitely not the cookie-cutter variety. All are different and some even have their original woodwork and stained glass. “It’s just a unique building,” Chris says. “I still see something new almost every week, something that I haven’t noticed or haven’t noticed in a long time.” Right across the street from the historic property is an annex, built in 2012 in part because of the booming gas business of the time, with twenty-four additional modern rooms. All the rooms have private baths, free WiFi, refrigerators, and cable TV. The hotel is also well known for its 100-seat restaurant, which specializes in traditional American cuisine—prime rib on weekends, lots of burgers and wings, and the recent addition of smoked meats such as ribs and pulled pork. A rustic, country-style bar completes the full-service facility. Chris and his wife, Jeannie, who he met while both were in the Army in Germany— “We were in Berlin when the wall came down,” he says, calling it, “a pretty incredible experience”—have three sons: Adam, Aaron, and Matthew. Adam is working at the hotel as his dad’s “right-hand” man. When asked if any celebrities have frequented the hotel or restaurant, Chris concedes there have been a few, “but I’d rather not mention them. They come to this area to get away from that.” He says people also come for myriad other reasons. “If you can think of a reason for someone to stay in our hotel, you would not be wrong, from people interested in history, to overflow from families coming to visit, to weddings, hunters, fishermen, outdoorsmen, motorcycles, a lot of business travelers. You name it.” Find the hotel at 54 Main Street, at wyalusinghotel.com, or call (570) 746-1204. 30

Sayre Farmer’s Market They say when it comes to a successful venture location is everything. That is certainly proven in the case of the Sayre Farmers Market. The market has used the same location since its inception in 2004: Howard Elmer Park in downtown Sayre. It’s a lovely one-block green oasis surrounded by stately homes and centered by a gazebo right out of Norman Rockwell. But the real advantage is the neighbor across the street—the Guthrie Healthcare System. Robert Packer Hospital and the Guthrie Clinic provide a steady flow of employees, patients, and visitors every Friday from mid-May to mid-October. Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Eleanor Hill says, “We began in 2004 with thirty-two vendors. In 2019, we had sixty-nine. We could accommodate up to ninety vendors but, on average, thirty-five to forty businesses come on any given week.” While the offerings are classic farmers market—fresh, organic produce and meats, plants, and crafts—it’s the food trucks that are the biggest draw. Lunchtime finds employees from the hospital heading to the park, often to enjoy their purchases under the shade of the trees before heading back inside. “We are up to six food trucks. There is a program that runs with the market called Delivered Fresh, where a vendor takes online orders and will deliver them to the patrons at the market on Fridays. It’s very convenient for the folks who need to get back to work,” Eleanor says. The Farmers Market is a fundraiser for the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, a group that represents a multitude of communities on both sides of the New York-Pennsylvania border. Volunteers work the park each week to assign spaces to vendors and make sure everyone has what they need. Weather will sometimes make its presence felt, but Eleanor says they don’t cancel the market unless the situation is dire. “If it rains, we don’t charge them for their space that week,” Eleanor says. “But many of the vendors will show up anyway, and endure the weather to be there for their customers.” On a bright summer day, the vendors do a brisk business, and the park is full of shoppers. They are scattered among the benches and relaxing in the gazebo, eating lunch or planning what they’ll make for dinner with the fresh food they just bought. Even time-pressed healthcare workers can grab something fast (and healthy) and get back to their duties, refreshed by the time outside and a moment to visit with friends. More information on the Chamber and its events can be found at www.pennyorkvalley. com. Want to be a vendor? Call (607) 249-6192 for information about the market. ~ Maggie Barnes 32

Deep Roots Cider This is not your grandma’s cider. Not that sweet, only-available-duringapple-season liquid the color of an autumn sunset. This is a grown-up cider with alcohol, and is the next logical step in the evolution that began with craft beer making. “People are more apt to go out and explore different takes on the same idea,” says Tim Wells of Deep Roots Hard Cider in Sugar Run. Hard cider comes in many styles—beer style, still, and bubbly among them. Deep Roots offers still style, resulting in something closer to a white wine than a carbonated beverage. Just like wine, there are varieties based on the fruit of origin and how it’s made. There are drier options and others that taste like biting into the actual blueberries or strawberries themselves. Deep Roots even has dessert ciders, a thicker, more concentrated flavor, as the finale to a meal. Or, as a staff member whispered conspiratorially, “I use it in pie filling. Heaven!” While hard cider vendors are the newest members of the craft beverage family, Tim says they have been welcomed by area wineries. “A lot of the wineries help each other out in our area. Places like Grovedale, Hidden Creek, Winterland, and Deep Roots send patrons to each other constantly.” No matter where you go, cider tasting is an experience that will be familiar to any wine aficionado. You select your samples from a panel broken out into reds and whites, dry and sweet. Sniff, sip, consider, ask questions, talk about food pairings…it is a joyful pattern of trial and error. Cideries have a slightly different feel to them than wineries, though. You almost think you’ve dropped in on the neighbors to see how this season’s crop turned out. At Deep Roots, chickens wander the farm while you stand in a small tasting barn complete with medalbedecked bottles, T-shirts, and tote bags. There are supplies available if you want to try your hand at home brewing. But maybe just get a few bottles there first. Drink it ice cold, then put your feet up and toast your new appreciation for the simple cider. GREAT OUTDOORS

Oh, Susquehanna! Thousands of people cross Veterans Memorial Bridge on Route 6 between Wysox and Towanda, perhaps not realizing that history is roiling beneath them. From winter’s drifting ice floes to the muddy churn of spring rains, the Susquehanna’s face changes with the seasons, but its recreational value and importance to the area has remained steadfast for generations. The river’s story begins long before the arrival of European settlers. Native Americans used it as an agricultural water resource; the Wyalusing Rocks served as a beacon for local Iroquois tribes. Later, the river saw the rise and fall of key Pennsylvania industries: fisheries, timber, coal, and, recently, natural gas came and went, all using the river’s waters for their plants and wells. “The biggest thing we want to do is make sure it lives on,” says Cain Chamberlin, executive director of Endless Mountains Heritage Region, a non-profit promoting recreation and environmental stewardship in the region. “The economy usually takes precedence over the environment, but, as the saying goes, ‘The environment can live without man, but man can’t live without the environment.’” And what a tragedy it would be to lose. The Susquehanna’s north branch flows from Cooperstown, New York, to Sunbury, Pennsylvania. EMHR works with other local entities to preserve the beauty and heritage of the river, and to teach a new generation how to take care of this precious natural resource. They aren’t the only organization taking advantage of all the Susquehanna has to offer. Endless Mountain Outfitters sells kayaking equipment and arranges trips out onto the river. Owner Keith Brown, owner says, “There’s just so much to do along the river, whether it’s kayaking, inner-tubing, fishing—you can go in so many directions.” Charlie Anderson, retired physical therapist and a river guide for EMO, adds, “You see all sorts of stuff out there: turtles, deer, bear. She calls it ‘charismatic minifauna.’” More than any of its economic benefits, though, the Susquehanna River offers something even more important: memories. It’s telling that, when asked what their favorite memory of the river was, neither Cain nor Keith could cite just one. “I just have so many along the river,” says Cain. “It’s such a big part of where we live. I grew up in Terrytown, and my brother and I could actually ride our bikes down to the river, so it was always there…” “To be honest,” says Keith, “one of my favorite times was just growing up on the river, fishing with my father and grandfather and not catching anything...I don’t know, there’s a lot of different times. Seeing the wildlife, meeting new people. It’s hard to pick just one.” For more information visit emheritage.org and emo444.com. ~ Alexis Ward 36

Song of the Bread Bakery It’s possible Tim Blaine is the first Blaine male in a kitchen. Anyway, that’s the joke he and his wife, Betsy, share when they relate the beginnings of Song of the Bread Bakery. It happened like this. Some years ago, Tim and Betsy had noticed a piece of property near their home that was for sale. It had a very cute cabin and a couple of decent outbuildings on it, and Betsy was quite sure it would belong to them sooner rather than later. She was right. The Cabin Country Store—a cozy compilation of antiques, collectibles, and the like—and Tim’s water pond supply business—for farm ponds and fish ponds—found a home there. But, sales a few years ago at the store were dropping, and Betsy, a retired nurse, says she “knew there was a calling for artisan bakeries.” There had been some in the area, but they were gone at that point. Tim wasn’t so sure he and Betsy were the ones to answer that calling, so they tapped one of their daughters, who was between jobs, to help. Betsy took a three-day course at the King Arthur Flour Baking School in Vermont, then went to a five-day intensive bread baking course (“I learned so much!”), and they were off. Tim took care of transforming a small horse barn on the property into a kitchen, eventually adding on a section for seating. Things were going along well in the bakery, and Tim was busy with his water pond supply business and as the go-to person at the Cabin Country Store, when their daughter got a job offer from a former employer. Now what? “Well, you could train me,” Tim remembers saying. And that’s how Tim became the first Blaine male in the kitchen. He makes the pastries and does the weighing-out for the bread making. “Plus, he does all the dishes,” Betsy laughs. “He is my Renaissance man—he can do anything he puts his mind to. I’m not a passionate baker. I started this as a business.” But, she adds thoughtfully that “God wanted us to have this.” When you try some of what Song of the Bread has to offer, be it anything from grilled cheese on homemade sourdough, to stuffed pepper soup, to a blueberry lemon scone with lemon glaze, you know she is probably right. Find Song of the Bread Bakery, the Cabin Country Store, and the water pond supply business (Tim will tell you about his koi) at 12044 Route 706 in LeRaysville. The bakery is open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with lunch served from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. For special orders, call (570) 746-4040. ~ Gayle Morrow 38

Oliver’s Pub and Grill

Flynn have created a fun, inviting space.

Relatively new to the Towanda food scene, Oliver’s Pub and Grill doesn’t disappoint. From the atmosphere, which is slightly industrial, to the food, which is slightly eclectic (try a pear and feta salad, Tuscan penne pasta, or a classic B.L.T.), to the outstanding service, you’re going to feel immediately at home. Opening in April 2018, owners Kelly and Michael

“We purchased an old abandoned building in December of 2017, and, with the endless help of my son Cory’s girlfriend, restaurant manager Kelsey Smith, we started the demolition,” says Kelly. “Just Kelsey and me—along with a crowbar and an old hammer we found in the building. After two months, we had filled thirteen huge dumpsters and were ready to design our pub.” The exterior remains untouched, honoring its place in the town’s history. “The building housed Oliver Tractor Dealership in the 1940s. We found an old Oliver’s Code of Conduct to the American Farmer in the basement and have that framed in the bar area. You can still read ‘Oliver’s Sales and Service’ on the side of the building; that’s the reason we didn’t paint it,” notes Kelly. It was also the perfect name for the pub. The spacious interior reflects today’s casual, American-style pub trend, with original brick walls, wood, and exposed ductwork. “I get a lot of comments on how much people enjoy the industrial look of the building—they feel like they are in a big city,” Kelly comments. Beginning with their creative craft cocktails (try something with a seasonal twist like a Toasted Marshmallow Martini) to inspired lunch and dinner specials and decadent desserts, Oliver’s aims to please. In addition to bottled and draught beers (twelve on tap), guests can opt for wine selections from nearby Grovedale Winery. The menu reflects Kelly’s commitment to using the freshest ingredients—it’s a difference you can taste. “We try to buy local produce and products whenever possible—fruit stands, creameries for cheese, and our beef is super fresh. We serve pub food (wings to burgers) but also have hand-cut steaks, seafood, pasta, and signature salads. All our food is made to order. We use nothing pre-cooked, and our kitchen creates all our dishes. We make our own cowboy salsa that we use on a few items that is delicious and unique, and our sauces for our pasta dishes are amazing,” Kelly states. Find Oliver’s Pub and Grill at 1550 Golden Mile Road and on Facebook. Or call them at (570) 485-5202 for reservations or to check on the acoustic music entertainment schedule. ~ Ann E. Duckett 40

French Azilum: An Asylum Fit for a Queen

That was the plan: In the fall of 1793 a small group of French exiles came up the Susquehanna from Wilkes-Barre in dugout canoes and boats provided by a French trader. They were citizens of France who “had fled to Philadelphia to escape the certain imprisonment and probable death for which their loyalty to Louis the XVI marked them,” according to a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission leaflet. “A few were of the courtier circle close to the king; some were of the minor nobility, officeholders, army officers, professional men, clergymen, merchants, and few artisans.” Others fled the French colony of Santo Domino where mulatto and slave uprisings were replicating the carnage of Paris, and joined the asylum far from revolution, insurrections, and the yellow fever outbreak then sweeping Philadelphia. The two Frenchmen who established the colony were otherwise certainties for the executioner’s blade: attorney Antoine Omer Talon, former chief justice of the criminal court of France, and Louis de Noailles, Lafayette’s brother-in-law, who had fought with distinction in the American Revolution. A member of the French National Assembly of 1789, his mother was chief maid of honor to Marie Antoinette. Sensing a business opportunity, Philadelphians Robert Morris, who signed the Declaration of Independence and financed the American Revolution, wealthy businessman Stephen Girard, and others formed a land company and purchased sixteen hundred acres to establish Azilum. Thirty log houses went up by the next spring, including La Grand Maison, a two-story log house, eighty feet by sixty, which became the center of the social life of the sophisticated French town in the wilderness. Talleyrand and Louis Phillipe, a future King of France, stayed as guests; this was the house set aside for the queen. But Marie Antoinette was beheaded that same fall, on October 16, 1793. Undeterred, the exiles in time added a schoolhouse, a chapel, a theater, dairying and sheep, gardens and orchards, a gristmill, blacksmith, a piano, a horseman who rode the mail to Philadelphia weekly, and makers of soap, gunpowder, and glass. But soon the town disappeared into the wilderness. With the bankruptcies of builders Morris and Nicholson, the émigrés left for Charleston or New Orleans, returned to Santo Domingo, or, after 1803, returned safely to France under Napoleon. A few families, such as the LaPortes, remained, and they and their descendants settled local communities. Today you can visit the historic site at 469 Queens Road, Towanda, open Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Memorial Day, July 4th & Labor Day. Special events in September and October each year. Please call 570-996-7534 if you are coming from a distance and need to make special arrangements for a tour outside regular hours. As you follow Route 6 east of Towanda through the wooded hills of Bradford County, the road climbs the 1,600-foot ridge of Summerfield Mountain, offering far below lovely views of one of the most idyllic spots in the Keystone State: the Susquehanna River meandering in a great horseshoe bend encircling a broad terrace of gentle fields and pastures and isolated farmhouses. This peaceful place is called French Azilum (asylum). If the sight gives you a sense of pastoral bliss, imagine how the queen of France, Marie Antoinette, would have felt had she escaped the terrors of the French Revolution to inhabit a great log mansion here, fleeing the guillotine for the remote safety and bounty of Penn’s Woods in the New World.

GREAT EATS

The Grille at the Train Station One thing you’ll notice when you enter The Grille at the Train Station in Sayre is how much people are enjoying themselves—customers and staff. It’s a Darrow family priority. “Community is very important to us, and this is a great community that supports local business,” says Joe Darrow, operations and managing partner at The Grille. It’s easy to see why everyone who is part of The Grille family takes great pride in what they do—Joe’s warm demeanor and positive outlook are infectious. He, his wife, Joy, son Joe Jr., who is general manager, and daughter Shelby, banquet manager, “all take a hands-on approach, from day-to-day operations and ordering, managing our staff of sixty-five, customer service, bartending, and cooking.” Three years ago, they took over The Original Italian Grille, housed in a converted 1881 train station. This well-established eatery simply “needed a boost.” From day one, they focused on serving good food and creating a place for the community. They added a new full-service bar room and banquet facilities, and a roof to extend use of their spacious outdoor patio. Off-site catering is an option now, too. You’re encouraged to “rethink your relationship with food,” as they say at The Grille, and they’ve certainly taken that to heart as the menu literally delivers what their patrons want. How do they know? “We asked our loyal customers what they liked the most and incorporated many of those concepts into our current menu,” notes Joe. You may have trouble narrowing down what to order, but try the Angry Clams with marinara sauce, sammies (like their famous prime rib), and gourmet pizzas and wings (saucy or dry rub options). Main dish options include chicken, fish (hand cut salmon, scallops, or fried), pasta, and fresh cut steaks. Stop in for a wide variety of fun events, like Wine Wednesdays or Tap Takeovers. From May to September, The Grille hosts Hot Rods and Hawgs, an evening of music and good food for show car and motorcycle enthusiasts. You can tap into your creative side with Sip ‘n’ Paint classes or Brews with the Art Crew nights. Warmer weather brings live music to the covered patio. When asked what he feels patrons enjoy the most about the restaurant, Joe muses that, “The Grille is just a cool, relaxed place to be. We try very hard to create an exceptional customer experience. We are all very interactive with our fantastic customers and strive to improve, for them, every day. We gladly accept reservations, but they’re never expected.” The Grille is at 718 N. Lehigh Avenue. Call (570) 888-3100, find them on Facebook or at thegrillesayre.com. 44

Shores Sisters Farm Market “It was either selling sweet corn or milking cows!” Renee Wilson laughs as she recalls the ultimatum her father gave her and her sister Raya when they were teenagers. The family had a dairy farm in Wysox, and a family farm meant all hands on deck. There was no way they could know then, but the sisters were on the path that has led to a bustling, much-loved business today. Shores Sisters Market stands exactly where the sisters sold corn out of a truck, but that location now includes a substantial building, a huge variety of wares, and a plan to be open year-round. Renee co-owns the business with husband Mike and employs fifteen to twenty people who, “remind me so much of myself when I started out.” Mike and Renee met in a setting straight out of a country song. He was a farm hand, loading corn when he caught the eye of the farmer’s daughter. He was headed to boot camp. She was going to college. Somewhere along the line, they decided the farm life was the one they wanted. Before they put up a building in 2012, the market was housed in a skid shed. A real structure brought lighting, refrigeration, and a lot of space. Renee’s dream for the market grew too, and she began to seek out specialty items and local suppliers for meat, baked goods, and seasonal décor. “I’ve learned as we’ve gone along,” Renee says. “And our customers have been a part of every milestone in my life.” They rejoiced when she and Mike got married, and cooed over their two daughters, raised behind the counter from their car seat days. Shores Sisters has worked hard to build relationships with local producers, and makes it a priority to use meats, greens, and grains grown nearby. From coffee roasted in Dushore, to Mother’s Day flowers in the greenhouse, to homegrown Christmas trees, Shores Sisters reflects the seasons. Now with a small café featuring soups, breads, and produce, even a gray winter day can be brightened by the Wilson family. “No, this wasn’t the plan when I was a kid,” Renee smiles as she greets customers. “But it is a good life,” one that includes a thriving business, a happy family, and a succession plan. There are two more young sisters coming of age in a farm market. In them, Renee and Mike see the legacy of living off the land continuing into the future. Find Shores Sisters Market at 1003 Golden Mile Road (Route 6) in Towanda, where they are open six days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and are closed on Sunday. You can reach the business by phone at (570) 265-0333. ~ Maggie Barnes 46

Hidden Artist The Hidden Artist studio is well named, as you could blow right by it on Route 14 in Columbia Cross Roads and never know it was there. But a U-turn is well worth it to see the artwork and craftsmanship of owner/ operator Steve Pazzaglia. He is an artist by training, with both classroom and private teaching on his resume. That talent also blossomed into an art framing business. To walk through the studio is to be immersed in paintings and prints that celebrate the natural beauty of the Endless Mountains—fields and hills, sunlight and shadow, all depicted in both watercolor and oil. “My customers tend to be a bit older,” Steve says while working on a frame. “Younger folks want to buy something with a click, and I don’t think that’s how art should be purchased.” His approach to customers is as much about relationships as it is the art. Folks come from all over the Twin Tiers and often spend a couple of hours admiring the pieces. Steve knows that once a purchase is made, the painting is going to a home where it will be appreciated. Framing other artists’ work also brings him satisfaction. “People want to make a piece fit their home and showcase it well. That is what framing can do.” While all his art is personal to him, there is one painting in particular that Steve dreads the thought of parting with. “Barbour View” is a massive tribute to one of the the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon’s most scenic and well-known vistas. Five and half by eight feet in size, the painting dominates the studio space and instantly draws visitors to it. The green of the trees is verdant enough to make you smell pine, and the eagle in flight so detailed you almost expect it to flap its wings. “A lot of weddings take place at that spot, leading to a lot of folks buying the print,” Steve says, indicating eighteen-by-twenty-six-inch version of the painting. The original is for sale, but Steve wants to see it publicly displayed. “A bank perhaps, or one of the energy companies around here. I’d hate to see it locked away in someone’s home.” In his mid-sixties, Steve is keeping an eye out for the next owner of Hidden Artist, someone who shares his passion for artwork. “It would be a miracle to find the right person, but I believe it will happen.” In the meantime, he is living out Mark Twain’s words: “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Find Hidden Artist at 24445 Route 14 in Columbia Cross Roads, follow on Facebook at The Hidden Artist, or call (570) 297-4693. 48

OUR HISTORY

Wyalusing Valley Museum

Once upon a time, there was a place called M’chwihilusing. The area, named for an early settlement of the Munsee Delawares, and occupied over centuries by several competing Native American tribes, became the site of a slaughter in 1750 when the Cayugas attacked and exterminated the Tehotachsee. The village wouldn’t be revived until 1752, when twenty families under Chief Paupunhank built on the ashes what would become the town of Wyalusing. “These are the stories that don’t get a lot of press,” says Morgan Clinton. She’s curator of the Wyalusing Valley Museum Association, founded in 1976 for the nation’s bicentennial and revived in late 1979 by a group of historically-conscious citizens eager to preserve the town’s heritage. The museum features collections related to the Wyalusing geographic area, including Native American stone artifacts, late nineteenth-century promotional items from local businesses, information on obsolete one-room schoolhouses, Civil War military memorabilia, genealogical materials, and more. “I think it’s important to understand how these communities, from the Indian tribes to European settlers, have developed over time and been influenced by the geography, because it’s a story that you see all over,” says Morgan. But, the history of Wyalusing is best experienced in the town proper. It has changed little since 1910, and the historic Main Street structures still feature the mark of the lumber industry, which made use of the Susquehanna River to transport logs and power sawmills throughout the 1800s. A handful of buildings even maintain catalogue-ordered metal façades from the railroad era, showcasing the possibilities that came with changes in transportation infrastructure. “Large changes on a national scale significantly influenced rural areas,” says Morgan. “It’s interesting the ways in which U.S. transportation infrastructure altered the culture. What happens when the railroad passes through? What happens when you build Route 6? Towns like this are a microcosm of the national story.” Morgan relates that she and her husband recently visited the West Coast. After immersing themselves in a very different landscape, she returned home with fresh eyes and a fresh perspective. “If I was a tourist, I’d be stopping every five minutes to take a picture,” she says. “The area’s gorgeous, but more than that, you can see and understand how the people that came before us were influenced by the landscape and the river, in agriculture, in the industries, all of it. It shows how landscape impacts how people live.” The museum is currently moving to a new building at 25 Main Street, where expansion is in the works. Discover Wyalusing’s heritage by visiting the museum in the Lodge Hall Annex on Church Street. It’s open Saturdays and Sundays noon to 4 p.m., May to October, and other times by appointment at (570) 746-3979. You may also explore Wyalusing on line at wyalusingmuseum.com. ~ Alexis Ward 54

BECOMING A LOCAL

Troy Veterinary Clinic “Large or small, we love them all” is the theme at the Troy Veterinary Clinic. Established in 1972, the practice is now two care units at one location, 15579 Route 14. This passionate-about-theirwork group of seven doctors and fifteen staff has a mission: “To be good stewards of our God-given talents and resources as we serve our patients, clients, employees, and families.” Dr. Seanna Brown (left) operates a mobile farm to farm unit and is a certified acupuncturist She joined the clinic in 2000 and works primarily with large animals. Her business partner, Dr. Dean Elliott, is certified in Dairy Production Medicine, and a practitioner since 1978. Dr. Marsha Rosanelli, partner three, has worked with her colleagues, and with large and small breeds, since 2007. This year Dr. Kelly Hill, Dr. Rachel Chase, Dr. Greg Cook, and Dr. Keitha Olthof added their expertise to the clinic. Dr. Hill has a keen interest in dairy cattle reproduction; Dr. Chase specializes in animal ruminant medicine; Dr. Cook, former owner of Broadway Animal Hospital in Elmira, continued his career with the clinic in September. Dr. Olthof began her work in 2002. She provides care in surgery, ophthalmology, and geriatrics. True animal lovers, the doctors and staff reside with cows, horses, sheep, birds, dogs, cats, fish, hamsters-oh-and people! Lisa Route, manager of the small animal clinic, states that being a “mixed” practice makes the Troy Vet Clinic unique. “A cow may be undergoing surgery. Walk through a door into another clinic, perhaps a cat is being treated for a broken leg. We work with our clients needs, wants, and budgets. Our doctors and staff are extensions of the love owners feel for their animals. We act according to this standard.” An online pet supply store with food, treats, toys, and more is available via the clinic’s website. With the mention of toys, Tina Oliver, one of the certified vet techs, and who has been with the clinic for thirty-four years, shared a story with a happy ending. Puppies like to gnaw on anything. In one case, a young Shih Tzu decided to chew a prize the pet owner’s daughter had received from a school fundraiser. Gulp! The toy was gone! During surgery, a tiny rubber chicken was removed, bringing unexpected laughter to the attendants. The little canine had swallowed the chicken whole. The youngster recovered nicely and the family retained the rubber chicken as a funny reminder of their pup’s dietary faux “paw.” Owners and pet—happy! It’s what they do at Troy Veterinary Clinic. Our Chambers of Commerce

The Wyalusing area is where the gift of the past joins with the present. The Greater Wyalusing Area Chamber of Commerce (wyalusing.net) is committed to presenting events such as A Day of Bluegrass Festival, the North Branch Triathlon, and other unique happenings that showcase the history, the magnificent Susquehanna River, and the area’s bucolic settings. These events are fun for residents and visitors alike, and offer both the opportunity to enjoy everything this part of Bradford County has to offer, from restaurants, hotels, and Main Street businesses, to outdoor adventures like kayaking, hiking, and taking in the famous Wyalusing Rocks and Marie Antoinette overlooks. The Greater Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce welcomes all to experience an area filled with opportunities focused on business, leisure, and history. Canton calls itself “the friendly town,” and it will only take one visit to concur with that assessment. The Canton Chamber (cantonareachamberofcommerce.com) showcases the warmth of this historic community all year with a full slate of events including festivals celebrating local wines, cheeses, and apples, a classic car show, a block dance, and so much more. Canton has even convinced Santa himself to light up the downtown when it’s time to kick off the holidays. Canton’s rich history, hard-working residents, and beautiful scenery all give the chamber plenty to offer tourists, businesses, and residents alike. Plan your visit soon. The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce (pennyorkvalley.com) in Waverly, New York, represents the historically rich Valley communities from both Pennsylvania and New York, including Athens, Sayre, Waverly, and the smaller, vibrant towns and boroughs dotting the countryside. A goldmine of hidden gems awaits at exits 60 and 61 of the Southern Tier Expressway. Interstate 86 (aka Rt. 17) straddles the Twin Tiers of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania and offers easy access to an exciting blend of natural beauty, a host of unique restaurants, shops, and lodging options, and numerous thriving businesses and Main Streets. For local events, check out Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce on Facebook. The Central Bradford County Chamber, celebrating the adjacent communities of Towanda and Wysox (towandawysox.com), can be found along Route 6, and offers a walkable downtown where local restaurants, shops, businesses, and Towanda’s beautiful 1896 courthouse can be found. Nature lovers can enjoy a leisure stroll down Merrill Parkway’s walking trail along the Susquehanna River. Both Towanda and Wysox provide a variety of lodging options for visitors coming to enjoy one of the many local festivities, including the annual Riverfest (August), Hometown Christmas (December), the Halloween Parade (October), or Square-Round Dance (summer). Find the CBCCC on Facebook for up-to date information on all the latest our communities have to offer. And be sure to stop along your drive down Route 6/Main Street! The Troy Chamber of Commerce (troychamberofcommerce.com) describes its location as the “crossroads of historical Routes 6 and 14” at the heart of the Endless Mountains. The area plays host to a wonderful mix of events throughout the year, including the Endless Mountains Maple Festival, the PA Heritage Festival, and the Troy Fair. Recreation options include the nearby State Game Lands on Armenia Mountain (hunting, fishing, camping) and Mt. Pisgah state and county parks (hiking, water activities), as well as outdoor sporting facilities in and near the town. Troy has a charming downtown, with tree-lined streets, Victorian homes, and businesses including bed and breakfasts/inns, specialty shops, and welcoming eateries. Don’t miss anything Troy has to offer. 60
