Bucket List Pennsylvania’s artisanal cheese industry is flourishing, and regional winemakers are also doing their part to provide delicious liquid accompaniment. A celebration of the Bradford County area’s dairies and viticulture takes place at Canton’s Manley-Bohlayer farm during the Canton Wine and Cheese Festival. This event is on the fourth Saturday of June, and offers guests an opportunity to sample a wide variety of wines and cheeses from Bradford County and beyond, as well as local crafts, music, and food. The parking is free; the fifteen dollar tasting ticket includes a commemorative wine glass; if you’re under twenty-one or the designated driver, your ticket is just five dollars. Get more details at cantonwineandcheese.com.

Troy Fair Need to satisfy your cotton candy craving? Haven’t had your share of corn dogs, funnel cakes, strawberry shortcake, or fresh, homemade ice cream? Here’s the solution: Mark your calendar for the 145th Troy Fair at Alparon Community Park July 26-31. There is truly something for everyone at the Troy Fair, from the traditional agricultural exhibits and competitions, to all kinds of community-based events and displays, music, fair queen crowning, tractor pulls, and lots and lots of great food. Gate admission is just eight dollars, and that covers parking, on-grounds events, rides, and the fun house. For updates on shows and other fair happenings, see troyfair.com or find the fair on Facebook. www.visitbradfordcounty.com 19

The Bradford County RiverFest Mid-August is the annual end-ofsummer celebration in Towanda known as RiverFest. This year it will be August 19, 20, and 21, and it promises to be as fun-filled and exciting as all that have come before. The three-day party includes a carnival, kayaking and canoeing on the Susquehanna, music, all kinds of food, and fireworks. Many folks make RiverFest their annual opportunity to socialize with friends both old and new, neighbors, and former classmates, and you can, too! Visit towandaborough.org for more information, or call Stacy Schoonover at (570) 268-9203.

Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival

Nestled between Towanda and Meshoppen, the tiny borough of Wyalusing hosts an annual celebration of local and regional wines, delicious food, music, and vendors. The Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival, held the third Saturday in September at 80 Fifth Street, began as a fundraiser for the Wyalusing Valley Museum, and has since expanded to help raise funds for the Wyalusing Lions Club. There are typically at least a dozen wineries, each offering delectable samplings of their products. There is plenty of seating, a wine-check service, and, for the athletically inclined, the North Branch Triathlon takes place the morning of the festival, giving bikers, runners, and canoers/kayakers their chance to shine. “It is a great opportunity to try some Pennsylvania wines, dance to some fabulous music, and enjoy the beauty of September along the Susquehanna,” says Morgan Clinton, curator of the Wyalusing Valley Museum. For the latest visit wyalusignwinefestival.com. 20

Bucket List Pennsylvania Heritage Festival The 2021 Pennsylvania Heritage Festival is September 18 and 19 at Alparon Park in Troy. This tribute to the past is a fun-filled excursion into what used to be. Plan on living history demonstrations, arts and crafts vendors, a flea market, lots of hands-on kids’ activities, great food, music, and the popular pumpkin chucker. Admission is free. For more information, contact event director Debbie Lutz at (570) 250-3070 or visit paheritagefestival.org.

Sayre Christmas Parade The Sayre Christmas Parade is always the Friday after Thanksgiving, giving Santa just enough time to enjoy his turkey dinner before he has to pack the sleigh for the parade. The event, which begins at 6:30 p.m. from West Lockhart Street, near the high school, draws thousands. Find out the latest at sayreborough.org or on Facebook.

Passport to Bradford County

I

f your passport is like mine—languishing—you will be pleased to know that if you have a passport to Bradford County (they’re easy to get), you can put it to good use immediately. What that means is you can actually go somewhere! “The goal is to offer an all-encompassing experience,” says Robyn Cummings, executive director of the Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency. “It allows you to ‘experience Bradford County.’ The guide [what you’re holding in your hand right now] talks about the experience; the passport is the way to do it.” Robyn is a tireless promoter of her beloved Bradford County—not just because it’s her job, but because she was born and raised here, and she’d like more folks to be able to “live the experience of being a local.” She explains that the Passport to Bradford County program is all about making it fun and easy to garner additional enjoyment from the eclectic mix of what the county already has to offer. The passport idea has been in the works for some time, Robyn says, but admits “there were always other projects” that pushed it to the back burner. She credits Bev Kline (who, full disclosure, now works for Beagle Media/Mountain Home), another Bradford County resident and advocate, for the original concept. Robyn then developed it, presented it to her board of directors for input, and “we got them made.” The passport fits in your pocket, it looks like a real passport, and has all kinds of space inside to document your experiences. It’s for visitors and residents alike. “You can be a tourist in your own backyard,” Robyn says. “It’s safe, it highlights outside recreation, it’s the action items off the guide.” For instance, if you visit Sunfish Pond County Park, snap a photo of yourself on the lake’s shoreline or maybe out in a boat, then attach that picture to the appropriate page. Visit two (or all!) events from the fairs/festivals “bucket list” pages, then attach a receipt or digital proof of entry to those pages. There are museums scattered throughout the county; visit one, attach proof of your visit to the museum page. Follow the same procedure for your lodging stays, your winery and brewery visits, and your scenic vista forays. Get the idea? When your passport is full, turn it in to the Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency (they won’t keep it, don’t worry) for “validation” and you’ll receive up to three travel mementos. The passport will be available at retail facilities in towns throughout the county, at the BCTPA office on Washington Street, Towanda, or call (570) 265-8687 FMI.

Wild Neighbors Nature Connection

“E

ver since I was a kid, I loved nature,” says Pastor Rich Hanlon, who serves Athens United Methodist Church at 118 South Main Street in Athens. “I was totally enthralled with getting to know and understand different kinds of wildlife. It started with bugs and then it was birds.” After undergraduate studies in ecology, Rich went to divinity school and was ordained as a Methodist minister. He sees the two as inextricably connected, and for him both are a source of joy and ongoing learning. Rich regularly leads guided walks into the wilds of northcentral Pennsylvania, sometimes as a pastor and sometimes as a secular guide. “Every event I lead, I consider the audience,” he says. “If I’m leading a walk for a church, I might add an element of Bible study and Christian spirituality. [If] it’s an outing where I might not talk about God or Jesus, I will share in story form what there is to experience in nature around us, with the objective of helping people find some connection with nature. The more I come to understand the love of Jesus and the more I come to understand about wildlife and all of nature, it’s more and more important for me to treat wildlife and all of nature as neighbors.” Citing the parable of the Good Samaritan, he says “mercy makes a neighbor. Mercy means love, kindness, compassion and care, seeing another’s well-being as important as our own.” Rich recently went birdwatching, something he does often. It’s birdwatching, right? He was surprised by the realization birdwatching can be about other senses. Hearing taps on a tree, he thought, “woodpecker!” and looked up. Not seeing it, he backed up to another tree and, leaning against it to look up, he felt the vibrations of the woodpecker’s taps through his hands on the trunk. “That was a new experience!” he says delightedly. A recent tour through a field of goldenrod focused on the many varieties of goldenrod and the food it offers an astonishing spectrum of wildlife. Rich also appreciates the way experiencing nature can be a connecting point between people who may hold different political and social values. “When a bald eagle flies overhead, whoever we are, we stand in awe of the beautiful creature that’s over us. Nature provides us with a place of retreat from all that busyness and trouble. And that is a gift from God.”

Room at the Inns Golden Oak Inn—Three lay-offs in a row were enough for Will Hawrylo. The Michigan native moved to Pennsylvania and bought a 1901 Victorian in Troy and became his own boss. The Golden Oak Inn offers “comfortable elegance” to its guests and, says Will, “guidance on the mustsees in the region.” Those include the state parks, the river walks, and the seasonal festivals that fill the calendar. “I wanted a Victorian home, because people are looking for something classic, not the basic vanilla experience you get at a motel,” Will says, noting the home’s stately demeanor includes the requisite front porch that just begs you to sit a spell. Much of the furniture is historical and offers both business and leisure travelers a relaxed atmosphere. Will provides a three-course hot breakfast each morning, served by candlelight. BriMarie Inn—It takes a special perspective to

see potential in a “disaster” of a building. Brian and Loretta Chaffee had such vision when they bought a dilapidated Victorian in the center of Sayre. Eighteen months and a lot of sweat later, the BriMarie Inn emerged, offering tourist, business travelers, even neighbors an elegant respite.

“It was a true family effort. Our parents did a lot of the work with us,” Brian says. The resulting eight guest rooms combine the charm of the building’s 1872 origins with modern conveniences. Options include Jacuzzi suites, a room with a private porch, and a serene lounge on the third floor. The location of the BriMarie makes for easy exploring. The park, the movie theater, shops, and restaurants are just a stroll away. For the ultimate in ease, the ground floor of the Inn is a fine dining restaurant. Find BriMarie at 119 S. Elmer Avenue, at thebrimarieinn.com, or by calling (570) 888-8800.

Hatch House Inn—“Feeding our guests is one

of my great joys,” says Michelle Hatch, proving she and her husband, Roger, made the right move in 2019 when they opened their bed and breakfast in Towanda. The Hatch House was originally home to the Tracy family, a prominent local name in 1889 when the house was built. Michelle and Roger have kept much of its charm—intricate woodwork and hardware, window arches, and customized fireplace tile.

The property includes three guest rooms, a swimming pool, the original carriage house, and a covered porch. Guests often speak of the warmth they feel here, like they are staying with friends. A quiet escape in a vintage home (and Michelle’s breakfast) sounds like the perfect remedy for a harried soul. Bluestone Brewing Company

M

andy Liechty was looking for a last-minute Christmas gift for her husband, Brady. He liked beer. The whole family, in fact, liked beer. So a home brew kit under the tree seemed like a more-than reasonable eleventh-hour save. Who could have predicted that what would really be unwrapped that holiday were the seeds of a new business? But that is exactly what happened, and Bluestone Brewing Company is the result. Located at 18 Pitney Street in Sayre, Bluestone is a family affair. Mandy’s dad, Brian Kennedy, is a full-time hands-on partner along with his brother PJ Kennedy, who works with brewer Thad York to craft eighteen brews in a 3,200-square-foot facility. The other family partners— Mandy, Brady, Brian’s wife, Linda, and PJ’s wife, Dorinda—form the rest of the team that keeps Bluestone humming. The building marries the styles of country farm and industrial loft with a warm balance of wood and metal. A couple of animal mounts give tribute to the family’s love of hunting; timber beams frame the ceiling; six different species of Pennsylvania hardwood were fashioned into the bar and tables. And, of course, there is bluestone. “Builders from all over love the look of bluestone. We wanted to celebrate a local resource,” says PJ. “The craft brew movement is a part of the organic, farm-to-table idea,” Thad says while doing a quality check on the product (which in this industry means he’s quaffing a brew). “True craft beer was absent from this region. We’ve spent time helping people adjust their taste buds back to beer’s beginning, which is a darker, more flavorful brew.” PJ nods in agreement. “We lightened a lot of our brews in the beginning and then gradually transitioned folks to more amber beers. Now, our customers tell us they can’t drink anything else.” Bluestone strives to provide for the non-beer drinker, too, serving local wines and hard ciders— and homemade soda that makes the commercial stuff seem flat by comparison. “We can’t make enough root beer,” PJ admits, handing over a glass. But what’s a great beer without a great meal? The grilled sweet Lebanon bologna on a pretzel roll is a fan favorite. If they ask if you want the spicy cheese with the hot soft pretzels, the answer is always yes. Have you ever had a flight of whoopie pies? Well, it’s about time, don’t you think?

Grovedale Winery

G

rovedale Winery, at 71 Wyalusing Lane, not far off Route 6 in Wyalusing, is as loaded with history as the vines are loaded with grapes. The Welles family began farming there in 1812, qualifying the property in 2012 as a Bicentennial Farm with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. “It’s got a lot of history,” explains Kim Homer—her husband Jeff ’s family were the first to farm this place. “The farm started on land given as a gift to the original owners for serving in the war.” (That would be the Revolutionary War.) The cattle farm started by Lt. George Welles and his descendants was called Grovedale, so Kim and Jeff kept the name for the winery. The Welles also owned a feed mill and petroleum business. Jeff ’s mother, Kay Welles, and his father, Dean Homer, were involved in the funeral home business. The farm also served in the past as a home to the local historical society. But it was the planting of a vineyard in the early 2000s and the subsequent opening of a winery and tasting room that formally endeared Grovedale Winery to the community. Weekends, visitors mingle with locals trying out the wines distilled from the nine varieties of Minnesota and vinifera grapes grown in the adjacent fields. Grovedale Winery has also grown into a destination for weddings. The mostly shaded lawn around the tasting room provides a space that appeals to those seeking a flexible indoor/ outdoor venue. Grovedale can provide a tent, along with tables, chairs, and the services of an event coordinator. Outside caterers are permitted. Guests are welcome to roam the vineyards; Grovedale staff will also provide tours that can include the historic and iconic big red house where Jeff and Kim and their kids live. That house, with its striking exterior and elegant interior, has a history of its own. Some folks think (or want to believe) that it’s haunted. Family members living there in 1900 did move out in something of a hurry. “No one knows why they left,” Kim notes, “but they literally left scrambled eggs on the table and clothes in the closets.” Old-timers like to stoke the ghost stories with accounts of sneaking into the empty house, seeing the petrified eggs on the table, and hearing ghosts. “I was kind of hoping it would be haunted. It’s honestly not,” Kim laughs. “It’s a very peaceful place.”

Building No 9 Grille

W

hat is it that has people literally waiting outside downtown in the heart of Troy? It is the father-son team Charlie and Cody Earle’s new restaurant/bar Building No 9 Grille. They are dishing up food and an ambiance worthy of a visit, with everything from chicken wing pizza to bacon double cheeseburgers and an Armenia steak salad, as well as seasonal favorites like amazing adult cocktails and locally crafted beers. Troy native Charlie Earle is no stranger to the community and definitely no stranger to work. For nearly a decade, he ran Charlie’s Family Food and Fun, which is now a Chinese restaurant, in Troy. For eighteen years, he ran Troy Skateland, a roller skating rink. In addition to these businesses, Charlie worked in the print shop at Mansfield University for nearly two decades. According to Charlie, one day he and son Cody were sitting at the red light on Elmira Street and noticed the “For Sale” at Tamarack’s Tavern. Bar patrons affectionately called it Building Number 8 because the adjacent Hoover’s Hardware has seven numbered buildings in the vicinity. Not only did Charlie and Cody gut and renovate the site, they also dubbed their beautiful new establishment the next digit, Number 9. This classy eatery, more specifically the building itself, is steeped in history. Tin from a century farm lines the wall topped with a decorative railing made of wood flooring from Troy Skateland. An antique pay telephone in the corner reminds customers of a pre-wireless world that no longer exists. Several large black and white framed photographs, a gift from Charlie’s daughter Allie, show the building during earlier time periods, one back as far as horse and buggy days. Allie also manages the restaurant’s trendy Facebook page. At the outset of the project, Charlie’s wife, Patti, encouraged the men to think about what they liked and looked for when they went out to dinner themselves. She helped with decorating the interior and earlier helped with the cooking, too. Building No 9 Grille has been a complete team effort. Despite the restaurant’s timing, opening three weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic struck, the business thrives. Transitioning to curbside pick-up and delivery, the team is working hard to provide the people of Troy and visitors to this area a memorable dining experience. In this case, Trojan treasure is not hidden but found downtown on 16 Elmira Street. Call (570) 2979947 for more information; you can also find them on Facebook.

MK Café & Catering

Y

ou might be at a wedding, at a regional fair or festival, or in downtown Canton looking for a meal. In any of these venues you could easily see, taste, and devour Melyce Kenyon’s handiwork. Some people just know what they want to do with their lives, and at fifteen Melyce knew. She wanted to own a business in the hospitality industry. Then she made it happen. She positioned herself to learn and experience as much as she could before entering formal training in college. As a young teen she worked for a catering company, a pizza shop, and later a coffee shop. Not surprising, this focused, motivated young woman was an honors student in the culinary arts program at Pennsylvania College of Technology. For Melyce, the college experience was an eventful journey. She married Logan, now her business partner, between her first and second year of college. But during the last semester of her senior year, Melyce’s plans took a serious detour. A congenital heart disease known as Wolfe Parkinson White Syndrome sent her to Penn Medicine in Philadelphia for emergency heart surgery. Not giving up on herself, Melyce fought her way back both physically and financially to return to college. She landed the internship of her dreams at Phillips’ Crab House in Ocean City, Maryland, where the workload was hard and physical due to the massive amounts of fresh seafood being handled. They ultimately offered her a job, but Melyce was determined to return to her hometown and make the business plan that she had created for her own catering company a reality. Two years ago, MK Café and Catering opened up in Canton. Melyce and Logan cater weddings—they’ve done almost fifty. They also cater business lunches, rehearsal dinners, and holiday parties, and offer dinnerware, glassware, linens, and bartending services for any event. Thinking of popping the question on Valentine’s Day? Melyce has created a new Valentine masterpiece—the chocolate-covered strawberry bouquet. Last year she had orders for 150 dozen! The ingenious husband and wife team also built their own beverage trailer. One of their beverage specials is a fruit-infused drink known as bubble tea. They feature fresh squeezed lemonade, along with flavored hot coffees, and chai teas. Visit MK Café & Catering at 25 Troy Street in Canton or call (570) 673-4494. For announcements about pop-up events such as meal specials that can be pre-ordered and picked up at the café, go to their Facebook page.

Farmer Fred’s

K

elsey and Fred McNeal subscribe to the notion that people want to eat healthy, local foods. Simply said, they want to provide their customers with the best. The best seasonal fruits, vegetables, meats, plants, and flowers, the best gardening practices, and the best local products that our region has to offer. Eight years ago they opened Farmer Fred’s in Towanda to do just that. Fred, a Troy native, grew up on a dairy farm. His love for the land only deepened at Juniata College, where he majored in earth studies and met his future wife, Kelsey. Successful farmers have a genuine love for the land and consciously, intentionally, use our natural resources with great care and respect. That is stewardship, and that is Farmer Fred’s formula. The couple’s educational journey took them west to California where Kelsey began her business career, and Fred completed graduate school, becoming a renewable energy engineer. Solar energy is one area of his expertise. Back home, what began as a pumpkin patch and a field of sweet corn has blossomed into another thriving Bradford County business. It was just Kelsey and Fred for the first four years— now they employ over a dozen people and provide the finest seasonal favorites year round. In spring, for instance, they showcase an open-air greenhouse with high quality plants and flowers. In the summer months, it’s seasonal produce with the quantities home canners need. In the fall, customers can find pumpkins and mums. For the holiday season, they offer Christmas trees and handmade live wreaths. Shoppers can find everything from soup to nuts on their shelves. A sampling includes stained glass items, pottery, crafts, hand-made outside furniture, fresh and frozen meat, flavored popcorn, roasted coffees, and even Highland Chocolates. Kelsey and Fred have connected with other like-minded businesses and provide a unique venue for shoppers. They are one of the businesses making up Delivered Fresh, the farm cooperative offering a wide variety of regional products with weekly home delivery at a reasonable price.

So what do the McNeals love about their business? Fred admits that one of his greatest pleasures is interacting with customers. He loves to offer gardening advice and wants his customers to experience success. Kelsey loves that the store is a continual color wheel, no matter the season. Find Farmer Fred’s at 1135 South Main Street, Towanda, on Facebook, at farmerfreds.com, or call (570) 268-2929. ~ Cindy Lisowski 38

Sunfish Pond County Park

F

or some destinations, getting there is just part of the fun. So, imagine a sunny afternoon. You and your beau decide to take a drive to Sunfish Pond County Park. There are a couple of ways to get there, depending on where you’re starting from, but from Canton you would take the rolling, winding road that is Route 414 east. The scenery is Bradford County at its finest, with fertile and verdant fields on either side of the road, working farms, and the Endless Mountains providing a backdrop that could be green, white, or multi-colored, depending on the time of year. Then you’re in Leroy Township, and finally you see the sign for Sunfish Pond County Park. You turn right onto Mill Street, which then morphs into Leroy Mountain Road, and you start heading up. And up. The dirt road makes a switchback in a couple of places, and you get an oh-so-picturesque glimpse of the valley far below. When the road levels off after a couple of miles, tall evergreens rise up like sentinels on both sides, forming a cool and fragrant entryway into the park. Sunfish Pond County Park, which the county acquired in 1970, is about seventy acres of land and about thirty acres of water, water that you can consider either a big pond or a small lake. Either way, it is stocked with trout, bass, pickerel, perch, and, of course, sunfish, all making for excellent fishing. A dirt road encircles it, so you can drive around to make your initial reconnoiter, then park and enjoy a leisurely exploration. For day trippers, there are several picnic areas, a newly constructed playground for the younger set, and a new, large pavilion. The park has thirty-eight RV sites (electric only), a dozen primitive tent campsites scattered around the shoreline, three rentable cabins, showers/ restroom facilities, and a seasonal camp store. There is plenty of wildlife to watch— just don’t feed the bears! Night skies at Sunfish Pond are spectacular, and the park is surrounded by thousands of acres of state game lands. If you’re looking for a beautiful, out-of-the-way spot to spend one afternoon or several, consider this hidden gem. Or, make Sunfish Pond County Park your base to launch an outdoor exploration adventure. The park is open from early May to the end of October. French Azilum: An Asylum Fit for a Queen

That was the plan: In the fall of 1793 a small group of French exiles came up the Susquehanna from Wilkes-Barre in dugout canoes and boats provided by a French trader. They were citizens of France who “had fled to Philadelphia to escape the certain imprisonment and probable death for which their loyalty to Louis the XVI marked them,” according to a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission leaflet. “A few were of the courtier circle close to the king; some were of the minor nobility, officeholders, army officers, professional men, clergymen, merchants, and few artisans.” Others fled the French colony of Santo Domingo where mulatto and slave uprisings were replicating the carnage of Paris, and joined the asylum far from revolution, insurrections, and the yellow fever outbreak then sweeping Philadelphia. The two Frenchmen who established the colony were otherwise certainties for the executioner’s blade: attorney Antoine Omer Talon, former chief justice of the criminal court of France, and Louis de Noailles, Lafayette’s brother-in-law, who had fought with distinction in the American Revolution. A member of the French National Assembly of 1789, his mother was chief maid of honor to Marie Antoinette. Sensing a business opportunity, Philadelphians Robert Morris, who signed the Declaration of Independence and financed the American Revolution, wealthy businessman Stephen Girard, and others formed a land company and purchased sixteen hundred acres to establish Azilum. Thirty log houses went up by the next spring, including La Grand Maison, a two-story log house, eighty feet by sixty, which became the center of the social life of the sophisticated French town in the wilderness. Talleyrand and Louis Phillipe, a future King of France, stayed as guests; this was the house set aside for the queen. But Marie Antoinette was beheaded that same fall, on October 16, 1793. Undeterred, the exiles in time added a schoolhouse, a chapel, a theater, dairying and sheep, gardens and orchards, a gristmill, blacksmith, a piano, a horseman who rode the mail to Philadelphia weekly, and makers of soap, gunpowder, and glass. But soon the town disappeared into the wilderness. With the bankruptcies of builders Morris and Nicholson, the émigrés left for Charleston or New Orleans, returned to Santo Domingo, or, after 1803, returned safely to France under Napoleon. A few families, such as the LaPortes, remained, and they and their descendants settled local communities. Today you can visit the historic site at 469 Queens Road, Towanda, open Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. Special events in September and October each year. Please call 570-996-7534 if you are coming from a distance and need to make special arrangements for a tour outside regular hours. As you follow Route 6 east of Towanda through the wooded hills of Bradford County, the road climbs the 1,600-foot ridge of Summerfield Mountain, offering far below lovely views of one of the most idyllic spots in the Keystone State: the Susquehanna River meandering in a great horseshoe bend encircling a broad terrace of gentle fields and pastures and isolated farmhouses. This peaceful place is called French Azilum (asylum). If the sight gives you a sense of pastoral bliss, imagine how the queen of France, Marie Antoinette, would have felt had she escaped the terrors of the French Revolution to inhabit a great log mansion here, fleeing the guillotine for the remote safety and bounty of Penn’s Woods in the New World.

Bradford County Airport

W

hat’s 4,300 feet long and perfect for boosting economic development in Bradford County? The runway at the county airport, 415 Airport Road, Towanda. Airport Manager Scott Hauser is in his first such position, but comes equipped with lots of ideas, and the energy to match. “My job is to integrate the airport with the community,” he says. “We need to increase awareness about how this facility can help local business.” For instance, did you know the airport has courtesy cars to loan to pilots? Land your Cessna and pick up some wheels for getting around town. Recently, a man flew in and got fuel at the county facility and Scott had a few minutes to chat with him. Intrigued by his glimpse of the region, he returned a few weeks later with his wife, and the pair spent the day shopping and dining in Dushore. That’s just one of the ways Scott sees the symbiotic relationship between the two entities. “Doing business with clients by flying in works well for companies from the cities. And folks here have a way to transact business in other places and still be home for dinner,” Scott says. In addition to plane fuel, there is flying instruction and hangar space for rent. The airport can accommodate thirty-two planes. Scott’s plans include making scenic rides of the beautiful region available, along with special events like fly-in breakfasts. “I’ve seen 500 people at an airport breakfast. Our ramp would be full of planes. Pilots will fly anywhere for a cheap pancake,” he laughs. But the idea that lights Scott up the most is having a flying school for young people to work on getting their pilot’s licenses. A late bloomer himself—he only got his wings in 2018—Scott sees education as a way to plan for the long-term success of the airport. “The more kids we can get interested, the better it is for the entire aviation community,” he says. What’s the biggest plane the Bradford County Airport can handle? “A really skilled pilot could put a C-130 on this runway.” Then Scott pauses. “He just couldn’t get it back out.”

But for the Cessnas and Lear jets and more conventional forms of flight for civilians, the Bradford County Airport offers a gateway to the beauty, charm, and warmth of the region. Visit them at bradfordcountyairport.com or call (570) 265-4900. Better yet, take a ride through Towanda and see the place for yourself. It might just give your imagination wings. ~ Maggie Barnes 44

Salt + Light

W

alking into this shop in downtown Sayre is like entering a warm home where your presence is a welcome addition to the soothing colors and sweet fragrances. Salt + Light is a gift and home décor store that offers unique items to achieve that “A-ha!” moment when you are searching for something special and realize you’ve found it. The building itself is part of the charm. As owner Brittany McKee remembers, “This mansion in the middle of town had been flooded and left to rot—but I could see the beauty waiting to come out again. The second I walked through the door, I knew I had to be a part of this story.” Brittany and husband Matt restored the home, and revel in being small business owners in the close-knit community of the Valley. Their shelves offer an eclectic collection, from candles that smell like autumn to amber teething necklaces for babies, from serving platters to Bible covers. Throws, pillows, country signs, interesting pieces for entertaining—even those little ceramic cheese markers you can never find. But there are more than great finds at Salt + Light. Brittany offers workshops for making artistic pieces and group events for bridal parties, office teams, and families. Want to try something simple on your own first? Pick up a paint-by-numbers kit. (So not the ones you remember from childhood!) Salt + Light offers an enhanced shopping experience not often available in our online world. You can certainly shop online, but if the baby dozes off on the ride to the store, just call inside and they will run your purchase out to your car. Trying to redesign a shelf? Decorating guidance is at the ready. Paint and advice on colors are also available, including video tutorials. No time to wrap? No problem. “There’s just something about a beautifully wrapped gift,” Brittany says, and she’ll make that happen. The best kind of day to visit Salt + Light is a chilly one, when opening the big door brings a rush of warm air and the scent of blueberry lemon thyme jam, but, really, any time is the right time. The wide floor boards creak beneath your feet, an old house’s version of a sigh of welcome. Wander around. There is more to see than you think at first. Explore every inch— you won’t leave disappointed. Find Salt + Light on 201 S. Elmer Street. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday. Call (570) 886-3632 and follow them on Facebook. ~ Maggie Barnes

Twin Ponds Country Market

N

estled in the heart of Bradford County, Twin Ponds Country Market is “a country market offering a country experience.” With everything from made-to-order sandwiches and subs, baked goods handmade from family recipes, and bulk foods galore (including bulk candy), Twin Ponds is the kind of family-run, local place where you can feel good about shopping. You won’t find much about Twin Ponds online or on social media, though. Relying on their reputation with longtime customers and word-of-mouth to grow business, the store’s owners admittedly prefer the experience Twin Ponds offers to speak for itself. It’s a strategy that harkens back to times when such hometown country markets were more commonplace. The proof in the pudding of the store’s success was its need for a bigger building. Formerly the Creamery Corner Country Market, the owners moved their business just a mile and a half down the road and changed its name in 2018. Now situated at 2601 Crayton Road, Monroeton, Twin Ponds caters to anyone looking for something different than the typical big-box store. Walnut Creek Foods line the shelves, as well as a wide range of jarred and canned goods, a large assortment of baking supplies, including a slew of different types of sugars, premium John F. Martin deli meats and cheeses, and even discount items for the savvy shopper. And, since they’re longtime residents of the area themselves, Twin Ponds’ owners source lots of locally grown produce whenever they can. Interestingly, the best time to visit Twin Ponds may be during the colder months, specifically October to April. That’s when you’ll find a selection of homemade soups, from the creamy to the meaty to the vegetable-packed and everything in between. Finish it off with some fresh, warm, homemade bread and a baked good or two—their specialties are ooey gooey sticky buns, delectable whoopie pies, and several varieties of cookies around the holidays. Get it all to go or munch on it there while you visit with the friends, neighbors, or new faces you’re bound to bump into. Whatever you’re after when visiting Twin Ponds, it’s clear the store is something special. It’s a place where locals and visitors shop, eat, chat, and stay longer than they intended.

Twin Ponds Country Market is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Wednesday and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The store is closed Sundays. Reach them at (570) 364-8002 during business hours. ~ Kelly Stemcosky 48

P.P. Bliss Gospel Songwriters Museum

D

o you know Philip P. Bliss of Rome, Pennsylvania? Maybe not personally, but if you have ever raised your voice to the heavens on a Sunday morning and sang “It Is Well With My Soul,” then you know his work, as he wrote the music.

Rome holds a treasure of gospel song writing history within its hills. And the P. P. Bliss Gospel Songwriters Museum has captured that history. James McGranahan, Daniel B. Towner, and other songwriters spent time here and, while the museum focuses on Bliss, the others have representation as well. Bliss, along with his wife, died young, killed in a New Year’s Eve train accident in 1876 at the age of thirty-eight. But he was a prolific songwriter, leaving a catalog of over 300 published songs and edited songbooks showcasing the work of other hymn writers. The museum features sheet music, a critical support for the visitors and music scholars who visit to find “that song that Grandma loved to sing.” Upon his death, a hastily written biography, A Memoir of P.P. Bliss, was published as a way to raise funds for his orphaned children. The museum has mined that book for much of its information. “Hallelujah, What A Savior,” “Let the Lower Lights Be Burning,” “Almost Persuaded,” and many other hymns came from the mind of Bliss. Museum official David Lenington says they are working on digitizing the lyrics on their website, to make them more accessible. “We are working on collecting as many of the songs we can find, and we’re always looking for more,” he notes. In fact, the public is asked to keep an eye out for memorabilia that may be connected to Bliss. There is likely more sheet music stashed away somewhere. Bliss also wrote instructional music for teachers and, using a pseudonym, published a series of humorous songs. Some of his funny songs were published under the name of “Pro Phundo Basso,” a musical reference if there ever was one.

So plan a drive to 969 Main Street, Rome, and learn about the “Music Men of Rome” and the special place they hold in the world of gospel song. The museum is open the second and fourth Saturdays in June, July, and August. The facility is staffed by volunteers, so it would be wise to give a call before you head out, (570) 247-2228, just to be sure someone will be there to greet you. Or visit online at ppbmuseum.org. ~ Maggie Barnes 54

Animal Care Sanctuary

C

ompassion can mean sympathetic listening to—and speaking for—those unable to speak for themselves. When Lesley Sinclair saw pets abandoned after their owners went on vacation, she took in the newly-homeless dogs and cats. When their numbers overwhelmed her space, she bought land in East Smithfield, and moved her large, four-footed family to what became the Animal Care Sanctuary at 353 Sanctuary Hill Lane. A no-kill refuge for unwanted animals, most of whom await adoption, the Sanctuary has expanded its scope from Lesley’s original dream. For a year after she died in 1998, friends took over the care of her 800 or so animals. A year later, Joan Smith-Reese (above) was hired to be the Sanctuary’s director, and she could envision amazing potential here, says Terri McKendry, Joan’s successor. “Joan [recently retired] built a veterinary clinic in a small trailer on the property,” Terri explains. Then, in 2020, one of Joan’s dreams became reality when a state-ofthe-art veterinary clinic opened at the facility, offering spay-neuter, well-animal, and other services to the community’s pets as well as to the animals in ACS care. Under Joan’s guidance, the sanctuary achieved national recognition. Terri, who formerly worked as ACS’s grant writer, oversees a range of programming, from the pre-veterinary student intern program, where young people work intensively to socialize dogs, to a transport service for rural clients whose pets are driven to and from the clinic for veterinary care. The sanctuary takes in pets from overcrowded shelters elsewhere and tries to rehome them; behaviorists are available to help with pet behavior issues. There’s a pet food pantry—donations always welcome—to assist pet owners having financial difficulties. The sanctuary maintains a roster of foster parents to care for and socialize animals in their homes. They’ve got a “working cat” program for kitties who prefer to keep their distance from humans but are happy to keep your barn or yard rodent-free. Some of their more than 200 volunteers engage in advocacy, education, and community outreach. “We have to take care of everyone who walks this earth, and that includes animals,” Terri says. At the beginning of the third quarter of 2020, she noted the clinic had just passed their 1,000th adoption for the year, a statistic that doesn’t surprise her. Having a pet is “even healthier for the humans than for the animals,” she notes.

Find out more at animalcaresanctuary.org, or reach them at (570) 596-2200. ACS also has a shelter in Wellsboro—the number there is (570) 724-3687. ~ Karey Solomon 58

BECOMING A LOCAL

Our Chambers of Commerce The Wyalusing area is where the gift of the past joins with the present. The Greater Wyalusing Area Chamber of Commerce (wyalusing.net) is committed to presenting events such as A Day of Bluegrass Festival, the North Branch Triathlon, and other unique happenings that showcase the history, the magnificent Susquehanna River, and the area’s bucolic settings. These events are fun for residents and visitors alike, and offer both the opportunity to enjoy everything this part of Bradford County has to offer, from restaurants, hotels, and Main Street businesses, to outdoor adventures like kayaking, hiking, and taking in the famous Wyalusing Rocks and Marie Antoinette overlooks. The Greater Wyalusing Chamber of Commerce welcomes all to experience an area filled with opportunities focused on business, leisure, and history. Canton calls itself “the friendly town,” and it will only take one visit to concur with that assessment. The Canton Chamber (cantonareachamberofcommerce.com) showcases the warmth of this historic community all year with a full slate of events including festivals celebrating local wines, cheeses, and apples, a classic car show, a block dance, and so much more. Canton has even convinced Santa himself to light up the downtown when it’s time to kick off the holidays. Canton’s rich history, hard-working residents, and beautiful scenery all give the chamber plenty to offer tourists, businesses, and residents alike. Plan your visit soon. The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce (pennyorkvalley.com) in Waverly, New York, represents the historically rich Valley communities from both Pennsylvania and New York, including Athens, Sayre, Waverly, and the smaller, vibrant towns and boroughs dotting the countryside. A goldmine of hidden gems awaits at exits 60 and 61 of the Southern Tier Expressway. Interstate 86 (aka Rt. 17) straddles the Twin Tiers of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania and offers easy access to an exciting blend of natural beauty, a host of unique restaurants, shops, and lodging options, and numerous thriving businesses and Main Streets. For local events, check out Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce on Facebook. The Central Bradford County Chamber, celebrating the adjacent communities of Towanda and Wysox (towandawysox.com), can be found along Route 6, and offers a walkable downtown where local restaurants, shops, businesses, and Towanda’s beautiful 1896 courthouse can be found. Nature lovers can enjoy a leisure stroll down Merrill Parkway’s walking trail along the Susquehanna River. Both Towanda and Wysox provide a variety of lodging options for visitors coming to enjoy one of the many local festivities, including the annual Riverfest (August), Hometown Christmas (December), the Halloween Parade (October), or Square-Round Dance (summer). Find the CBCCC on Facebook for up-to date information on all the latest our communities have to offer. And be sure to stop along your drive down Route 6/Main Street! The Troy Chamber of Commerce (troychamberofcommerce.com) describes its location as the “crossroads of historical Routes 6 and 14” at the heart of the Endless Mountains. The area plays host to a wonderful mix of events throughout the year, including the Endless Mountains Maple Festival, the PA Heritage Festival, and the Troy Fair. Recreation options include the nearby State Game Lands on Armenia Mountain (hunting, fishing, camping) and Mt. Pisgah state and county parks (hiking, water activities), as well as outdoor sporting facilities in and near the town. Troy has a charming downtown, with tree-lined streets, Victorian homes, and businesses including bed and breakfasts/inns, specialty shops, and welcoming eateries. Don’t miss anything Troy has to offer. 60
