Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival

Nestled between Towanda and Meshoppen, the tiny borough of Wyalusing hosts an annual celebration of local and regional wines, delicious food, music, and vendors. The Wyalusing Wine Festival, held September 17 at 80 Fifth Street, began as a fundraiser for the Wyalusing Valley Museum, and has since expanded to help raise funds for the Wyalusing Lions Club. There are typically at least a dozen wineries, each offering delectable samplings of their products. There is plenty of seating and a wine-check service. “It is a great opportunity to try some Pennsylvania wines, dance to some fabulous music, and enjoy the beauty of September along the Susquehanna,” says Morgan Clinton, curator of the Wyalusing Valley Museum. For the latest, visit wyalusingwinefestival.com. 20

Scenic Route 6

W

hat Pennsylvania icon has been identified by National Geographic as “One of America’s Most Scenic Routes?” Hint: it runs through eleven counties and is 427 miles long. The answer: PA Route 6.

Bradford County, one of those eleven counties that hosts Route 6, is home to rolling hills, an abundance of agriculture, and the Endless Mountains region of the state. Natural physical beauty surrounds the highway, providing boundless opportunities for outdoor recreation like camping, hiking, biking, ATV riding, snowmobiling, and motorcycle riding. The lush habitat provides places for birding and wildlife watching. The region also features watersports like kayaking, boating, and fishing. Mount Pisgah State Park, home to Stephen Foster Lake, is one local treasure to check out. And the North Branch of the Susquehanna River is an integral natural resource steeped in history. Visit French Azilum and Marie Antoinette Lookout to learn some surprising French connections to this area. Attention motorcycle enthusiasts—Harley-Davidson proclaimed US Route 6 “Pennsylvania’s Best Touring Route” with five touring loops, including Bradford County’s Endless Mountains Loop. This ride loops through the communities of Towanda and Wyalusing and on to Wyoming County, passing by the Tunkhannock Viaduct, once the largest poured concrete bridges in the world and still an impressive sight. The loop includes stops at Grovedale Winery, a member of the PA Route 6 Artisan Trail, and the historic Wyalusing Hotel. The PA Route 6 Artisan Trail features over sixty artisans who are, as their motto states, “connecting [their] communities through creativity.” Bradford County is home to nine of these. Mill Street Treats, the Settlement House, and Bradford County Heritage Village and Farm Museum are just a few. Would you like to sample a local beverage? Enjoy tasting experiences at a winery and a cidery? Grovedale Winery and Deep Roots Hard Cider are both found on the Artisan Trail in Bradford County. Check out the PA Route 6 Alliance website, paroute6.com, for everything you need to “Do 6,” including detailed itineraries to map out your trip and contact information for regional tourism agencies and visitors bureaus. It is indeed one of America’s most scenic routes, so come see it for yourself! 22

Endless Mountains Bikepacking Gravel Loop

W

hether you are an avid gravel grinder or just now hearing about this hot trend, the new Endless Mountains Bikepacking Gravel Loop should be on your list of adventures. From family-friendly shorter sections to bikepacking the entire 400 miles, this trail has something for everyone and will be launched this spring. The first designated gravel loop in Pennsylvania suitable for multi-day adventures, the trail takes cyclists through the four counties of Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming—known as the Endless Mountains Heritage Region. Ninety percent of the route is dirt roads, with paved roads occasionally taking you through quaint towns where you may stop to charge your phone, eat a good meal, drink a local cider, or visit a point of interest. Cain Chamberlain, executive director of the Endless Mountains Heritage Region, says, “The route incorporates many of our museums/historical societies, historic sites and downtowns, scenic overlooks, parks, trails, campgrounds, hotels, restaurants, and more.” But this is not a walk—or ride—in the park. It is a self-determined ride that you can plan to last a couple of days—or take a week to do the full loop. It covers challenging terrain with over 31,000 feet in elevation changes throughout. Cyclists can do the loop in one trip or ride it in sections over time. For example, the segment from Mt. Pisgah to the town of Sayre offers both vistas and vittles, if you end with a meal in town. Sullivan County Commissioner Donna Iannone explains that the trail came about because she is an avid cyclist and wanted the area to take advantage of this trend to promote cycling here. “It’ll be an exciting way for visitors to explore our region as outdoor recreation has become a more vital part of people’s lives,” she says. “We have a vast amount of gravel roads and long hills to climb, plus great scenery and cool places to see on the loop. The D&H Rail Trail, which won PA Trail of the Year, is part of the route.” There are many reasons for gravel biking’s popularity. Less traffic is one of the main ones, allowing riders to relax and enjoy the adventure and scenic beauty. You can pedal for hours without seeing a vehicle, or even other cyclists. Donna saw the biggest buck of her life while on her bike. So, if you are wishing for something more challenging than rail trails but without the traffic of road riding, give gravel grinding a go! ~ Lilace Mellin Guignard 24

Let’s Go Camping Get away from the humdrum everyday by living outdoors for a close-to-home adventure in three Bradford County rural havens. These days, camping can be tent-primitive or cabin-comfortable, with scenery, fresh air, hiking trails, and birdsong as a bonus. At Pine Cradle Lake, 220 Shoemaker Road, Rome, guests may rent cottages, each with bathrooms and kitchens, heat, and air conditioning, or more primitive cabins offering inside sleeping but no inside bathroom or kitchens. Campsites include spaces for RVs, pop-ups, and tents. Water and electric are available, even in the wooded areas. There’s a heated pool, bath houses, outdoor charcoal grill set-ups, and fishing spots. Special event weekends are offered through the season. The campground is pet-friendly for up to two pets per family for an extra fee; pet owners need to provide proof of vaccinations. For rates and more information, check their website, pclake.com, or call them at (570) 247-2424. At Rolling River Cabins & Campground, 1200 Leisure Drive, Towanda, there are fifteen RV sites and six cabins, some with full kitchens as well as bathrooms. You can choose your degree of vacation getaway here—all cabins have Wi-Fi, and there’s Internet access throughout the campground, says co-owner Tiffany Smith. Every campsite comes with electric, sewer, and water. The river is the Susquehanna, “And we’ve had bald eagle sightings here. Some people come just to look for the eagles!” Or to compete with the eagles for fish. Open year round, Tiffany says the campground can usually accommodate guests with a few weeks’ advance notice. For more information, call them at (607) 426-2666. Sunfish Pond County Park and Campground at 1060 Sunfish Pond in Canton is sited atop Barclay Mountain in Leroy Township. It is seventy acres—thirty of which are the beautiful troutstocked Sunfish Pond, which is also home to bass, pickerel, perch, and, of course, sunfish. The park is surrounded by thousands of acres of state game lands and the abundant resident wildlife inhabiting them. Open May through mid-October, the park offers a pavilion, thirty-eight RV sites, and a dozen sites for tent camping. There are shower and restroom facilities, dump facilities, as well as a camp store offering some foods and necessities. Boating—electric motors only—is allowed on the lake. At times during the season the park sponsors events like the Sunfish Shuffle. Additional information may be found on the county website, bradfordcountypa.org/county-parks, or contact Bradford County Parks Supervisor Bob Voda at (570) 265-1790 or (570) 442-3347. ~ Karey Solomon

Grovedale Winery

T

he isolation and stress of the pandemic spurred a huge variety of coping mechanisms, everything from yoga to bread making to puppies. One winery in northern Pennsylvania reached a new height in tackling the headaches covid has caused.

The space at Grovedale Winery in Wyalusing gives off a low-key vibe with Adirondack chairs, a fire pit, an American flag made of wine bottles, and a swinging daybed. There’s even a curly-haired dog who smiles at you while strolling the grounds. But in early 2020, the winemaker at Grovedale had a crazy idea. “I was being serious about trying to find something humorous in what was happening, and developing a wine that spoke to the times,” says Grovedale owner Jeff Homer. “Not really just the pandemic, but something to drink for the times of frustration. Coming up with a way to laugh, when you really want to cry.” That’s how they decided to bring the world what it really needed; a wine named “Sh!tshow: A Fine Wine for the Times.” Wine is often associated with celebration and toasting happy occurrences, but what do you drink when served with court papers? Or after that big project at work fails? Transmission dropped out of the car on the interstate? This calls for a glass of…what? Grovedale Winery to the rescue with a trio of red, white, and rosé wines, perfect for the next time something in your life falls apart. “These are very good wines,” Jeff insists. “The red is an oak-barreled Cabernet Sauvignon, the white a Chenin Blanc, and the rose is from Washington State grapes. They are premium varietals.”

A wine that so perfectly captures the spirit of the last eighteen months was bound to attract some attention. The venerable publication Food and Wine wrote about it, calling it “especially well-suited to this still-terrifying, eternally frustrating landfill of a year.” Popular foodie site Delish offered, “You deserve a glass. Or maybe a whole bottle!” Right now, the wine is only available from the winery, a few regional grocery stores, or via online ordering. Better days must be coming, however, as the folks at Grovedale have dived back into the specialty wine process and already put a label to their next themed wine. Its name? “Gratitude.” Grovedale Winery is located at 71 Grovedale Lane in Wyalusing. They are open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. You can find their website at grovedalewinery.com and follow them on Facebook. ~ Maggie Barnes 30

Antler Ridge

W

ine, kielbasa, and wide open spaces—life is good at Antler Ridge Winery and owner Steve Unis enjoys sharing the tasty side of things with his guests. Since 2005, he’s been growing grapes and producing wine commercially. Before then, he was a farmer, honing his skills as a hobbyist home winemaker. “I figured if I could do a hundred gallons, I could do a thousand gallons,” he says. Many thousands of gallons later, he offers twenty different grape and fruit wines from dry to sweet. “We try to grow a little of everything to meet every palate,” he says. His wine is sold at four Antler Ridge locations around Pennsylvania, but the home farm is at 37 Antler Ridge Lane, in Ulster, where he aims to make the winery a destination where people can come, relax, eat, visit together, and stay a while. “Very few just come and leave,” he says. “We have a beautiful deck with heaters, and tents outside so people can get together as a larger or smaller group. Last year we left them up all winter so people could social distance and be outside. In the winter, we’ll do a pig roast. We tell people to bundle up and come!” Steve inherited his grandfather’s name as well as the skill, passed down through his family, of crafting kielbasa. “It’s been a family tradition since the 1940s; my boys are helping me make it now. It’s very popular, and it’s a neat thing to do,” he says. Guests taste it at the winery café and often purchase some to take home. The winery staff includes culinary arts graduates, but “everyone does everything,” he says. He considers his staff as part of his extended family. The multi-talented group helps with winemaking, kitchen work, serving, and retail, as he does, adding input and menu suggestions, and ideas for different wine and food pairings or winery events. At once-a-week meetings, staff from all four wineries gather to share ideas, and taste new wines and potential items for the café menus. Food is offered at two locations. In the Antler Ridge gift shop are gifts, T-shirts, gift baskets, wine racks, and home winemaking supplies for the try it yourself set. Steve even offers fresh-pressed juices every fall. “It’s a seven-day-a-week job and an adventure every day up here,” Steve says enthusiastically. “I love the freedom of being able to create. There’s always something new every day. I enjoy that thrill.” For more information, visit antlerridgewinery.com or call them at (570) 247-7222. ~ Karey Solomon 32

Jimmy’s Park Hotel

I

t must be innate—some people are just naturally drawn to good food and its creation. Chef and restaurant owner Jimmy Walker is one of those people. Early job involvement with food guided Walker’s career path. With more than four decades of experience in the hospitality industry, Walker struts his stuff in Jimmy’s Park Hotel, 127 Troy Street in Canton. Prime rib is on the menu every Friday and Saturday, and there is usually a wait list for diners. The locals and people from as far as Bellefonte, Selinsgrove, and Elmira return to enjoy the great food and ambiance. A Bradford County native, Walker hails from Wyalusing. As a high school freshman, he was hired by the Wyalusing Hotel to work as an ice cream boy. Three days later, he was promoted to become a breakfast cook. After high school, Walker ventured to Washington, D.C., where he studied at the Culinary Institute in Georgetown. He fondly recalls one of his teachers, known to the students as Chef O.Z. who personally took him under his wing. Smiling, Jimmy recounts the most important lesson he was taught, the five Ps—Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance. Walker took that lesson to heart. He often starts his day at 4 a.m. and ends at midnight. In addition to the restaurant, he also operates a catering business. One summer, he catered weddings every Saturday from Memorial Day to Labor Day and actually did double duty— catering two weddings on the same Saturday on three different occasions. How does one attempt such a feat? Organization and good help, he says, as well as attention to those five Ps. His family—wife and best friend Missy and their six children, all trained by Walker, help carry the load. The catering, a family tradition, continues. If you can’t find Walker in the restaurant, he may have gone fishing. A spiritual person at heart, he proclaims that Keuka Lake is his “piece of heaven.” Not surprising, several mounted trophies are showcased on the establishment’s walls. Walker credits his success to consistently producing great food. His goal is making sure customers who dine with him are personally satisfied. Whenever possible, he comes out of the kitchen to interact table by table with his patrons to ensure this. His mission is indeed intrinsic and ongoing. Flying Taco

W

hile Ann Smith and her business partner Shelby Burgess held their breath during the auction, Ann’s husband whispered, “If you don’t get this building, we will find another.” “Nope!” Ann laughs. “It had to be this building.”

The building was the former The Flying Cow Bakery in Towanda. The auction bid was a success. Ann and Shelby envisioned a new life for the space, but in tribute to its previous incarnation, The Flying Taco Mexican Grill was born. They’ve never run a restaurant before, but the opportunity was too good to pass up. “I don’t want to have a lot of wouldas, couldas, shouldas in life,” Ann says. “This was our chance.” “Custom-made Mexican food, all fresh ingredients with a chef who knows true Mexican cuisine,” Ann says. The staff has the pedigree to pull it off. Shelby’s parents were raised in Mexico. The chefs hail from El Salvador and Puerto Rico. “You build your own meal by selecting the chips, the salsa, the sides,” Shelby says. “We will use legitimate Mexican proteins, pork, chorizo, and fish like mahi-mahi.” Reference another popular American-Mexican fast food joint, and Shelby laughs. “My mother saw that they use ground beef. She was like, ‘What is that? I’ve never used ground beef in my life.’” Nevertheless, the Flying Taco will offer Mexican slider burgers, just to give the beef lovers an option. But The Flying Taco aims to be more than just another restaurant, and the plans reflect a lot of thought about the actual experience of dining out. “We will have wait service, a full bar, and total seating for ninety-five people,” Ann says. “But this building also offers great outdoor space, including a deck upstairs and an outdoor patio with a view of the river.” The building is centrally located in Towanda, with the nearby county buildings offering a built-in customer base. A vintage shuffleboard game and pool table invite folks to transform their evening meal into a fuller evening out, rather than an eat-and-run occasion. Besides, with ten different kinds of street tacos—and a heaping topping of pineapple salsa—why not nosh and play? Hand-mixed margaritas and cold beer make an ordinary night a party. “We want our guests to gather here, have fun, and enjoy the flavor explosion our menu will offer,” Shelby says. The Flying Taco Mexican Grill is located at 7 State Street in Towanda. Follow them on Facebook. 38

Mill Street Treats

“T

he truth is, I wanted the machines out of my garage, so I put them together. That was the beginning.” Shane Morgan never planned to go into business with his father-inlaw John Seeley. He was working in construction when John began making caramel corn in his retirement. John recalled the fresh popcorn from the Sears store in his youth and wanted to offer the experience to others. But, in short order, the popcorn business grew too much for one retiree. That was the beginning of Mill Street Treats, an out-of-the-way shop that grew into a full time job for Shane. Knowing popcorn wasn’t going to be enough for a business, Shane added some of the other true essentials of life, like coffee and ice cream. Now, the store is open seven days a week and has a strong following, including a thriving online business shipping nationwide. Being a first time business owner, Shane admits he learned a lot through trial and error. Actually, the store is less a business and more an homage to locally grown and prepared items. Neighboring farms are featured with maple syrup, honey, cheese curds, shrub [a refreshing, nonalcoholic vinegar-based beverage] and balsamic vinegar. Shane can tell you about each family who produces it all. The espresso machine is without electronic components. It runs by mechanical leverage and will probably outlast us all. The Morgans grind and roast their coffee the old-fashioned way, in a restored 1901 roaster. “Truly making coffee is a very intuitive thing,” Shane says. “It’s more sight, smell, feel, than it is science.” “And my people,” he adds, with obvious pride, “are true baristas. They know coffee.” Coffee is available in beans, ground by the pound or in bulk, or K-cups, which are hand sealed four at a time. Custom orders are no problem—the folks at Mill Street will put together whatever you need. Gift packs, corporate gifts, and fund raisers for the local school are all part of daily life at Mill Street. There is no seating in the store, so items are bundled to make for convenient grabn-go. “My customers come from a fifty-mile radius,” Shane says. “Lots of Corning folks make the drive.” In the summer, picnic tables outside offer seating for ice cream lovers. Mill Street features vanilla and chocolate custard and makes a variety of sundaes, floats, and other treats. Mill Street Treats is located at 2467 Sylvania Road, Troy. Hungry Hiker Digital Passport

T

ime in the great outdoors leads to health, fitness, enjoyment of the scenery, and an appetite for something good at an opportune re-fueling stop. With the intention of promoting Bradford County’s lovely parks, waterways, and trails as well as its tasteful restaurants and eateries, the Bradford County Tourism Promotion Agency is launching the Hungry Hiker Digital Passport to direct residents and visitors to the places they’ll want to go. “I know I always get very hungry and thirsty after I kayak or go hiking,” says Robyn Cummings, the agency’s director, who is making this idea a reality. “It’s nice to know where you can sit and have a glass of water and an appetizer and meet up with friends.” This app, accessible by phone, laptop, or tablet, lists all the trails in the county and the majority of restaurants, including information on which restaurants are closest to which parks. After all, it takes a good deal of energy to hike, bike, or kayak, and, after ten miles or so on a trail, a bit of refreshment is a good thing. “Bradford County is the second-largest county in the state, so it has a lot to offer,” Robyn says. “So residents and visitors will be able to utilize this and see a lot of the county. Once they complete twenty trails, they’ll get a complimentary pint glass with the Hungry Hikers logo. “This is kind of something new for our area, something people really seem to enjoy. We see a lot of visitors coming to utilize our outdoor attractions. It’s a fun experience for the whole family. Each restaurant and trail will have a hyperlink so they can call for reservations, check hours, call and ask questions. For instance, if I’m at Mount Pisgah hiking the O Susannah Trail, I can see immediately what restaurants are nearby. “During the pandemic, we found people wanted to be outdoors, doing family things. This lets people stay safe and healthy while socially distancing, seeing what’s around them—and people love food and they have to eat!” Unlike a brochure pulled off a rack, the digital passport will be kept continuously updated, adding information as new establishments open or more information about ones listed is requested, meaning whenever a user logs in, they’re likely to discover something new. “Our hope is we can develop more digital passports, maybe for wineries, museums, and historic sites,” Robyn says. “We’re starting with what we know people are looking for right now.” Find out more on their website visitbradfordcounty.com or call (570) 265-TOUR.

Downtown Sayre Revitalization

O

nce a railroad town, Sayre’s future was changed forever by the generosity and vision of two leading citizens. Robert Packer Hospital, founded in 1885 in the family mansion donated by the railway magnate’s sister, Mary Packer Cummings, originally served the area’s ill and injured, particularly those hurt while doing railroad work. In 1910, Dr. Donald Guthrie, a Mayo Clinic-trained surgeon, arrived. Under his leadership, the hospital expanded, becoming one of the pre-eminent teaching hospitals in the country. In the more than a century since, the hospital continued to grow, though the population of Sayre declined slightly. In recent years, after it became clear that retention of hospital staff could be positively influenced by downtown improvements, the Guthrie Medical group helped kick off the Sayre Revitalization Initiative, an effort that currently involves residents, business owners, employers, and borough and county officials. Begun in 2019, The SRI Coalition partnered with Derck and Edson to formulate a downtown master plan. A series of public meetings and forums were held to hear what the residents wanted in their downtown. What characteristics did they want? From facades, to streetscapes, to signage, etc. various categories were questioned and the plan reflects those preferences. The vision statement developed during this process is to “Establish Sayre as a regional hub for recreation, education, hospitality, and wellness.” At the same time, says Chris Brown of the Central Bradford Progress Authority, “Downtown living is a main goal, so we’re looking at ways to help existing owners renovate second and third stories for apartments. Most of the workforce we’ve interviewed wants to live downtown.” The successful evolution of Corning, New York, was a model for the community development and downtown improvements planned for Sayre. The Valley still boasts an active manufacturing base, and many small businesses employing hundreds of residents. In addition to those who live and work in the community, about 600,000 patients—and their families—come to the hospital each year. They would also potentially appreciate and patronize the enhanced amenities available in Sayre. “A lot of the effort has been grassroots,” Chris says. “We have found funding opportunities with community and economic development agencies at the state level and also private donations.” The community has spirit. Each year they host a “Toys for Tots” campaign prior to Christmas, and, “The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce has been working closely with us to round out a calendar of events to have something going on at all times throughout the year,” Chris says. Heritage Garden Club

D

on’t get the idea that the Heritage Garden Club of Troy is a band of quiet ladies who gather to nibble cucumber sandwiches and chat about roses. The club members are green-thumbed ambassadors for their community, with several projects underway at any given time in every spring, summer, and fall. They understand the power of nature-made beauty and use it strategically to increase the enjoyment of life for others. If you’ve ever passed the “Welcome to Troy” sign, you’ve seen the results of their talents in the blooms that adorn it. “The one by Tops on Route 14 looks nicest this year,” says Barb Andrus. Begun in 1995, the Troy Heritage Garden is part of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. When Shirley Merloe invited a few ladies to her home to talk about beginning a garden club, she probably never envisioned a day they would be counted among 175,000 other members throughout the nation, all the way up to Alaska and down to Hawaii. But in 2009, the Troy group hitched their wagon to the consortium and reaped the benefits of educational opportunities and new projects to consider. The club applies for aptly named “seed grants.” One year they got funding for professional plant markers, so folks can not only enjoy the flowers and plants but identify them as well. The Heritage Village and Farm Museum in Troy provides the perfect setting for some of those projects. “We created gardens at the Heritage Museum,” Judy Warn says. “The easiest is the Friendship Garden, where our members bring a favorite flower from home and we plant them together. But some of our efforts require a lot of research.” She’s not tiptoeing through the tulips about the research. The Museum also features a Dye Garden, where everything planted has historically been used to tint clothing. But the mountain of research that was steepest to climb was for the Herb Garden. There are over thirty types of herbs represented, and the ladies can tell you much about the ancient uses for each of them. “Herbs fall into categories like medicinal, culinary, or fragrant,” Barb says. The garden speaks to the original green movement, when a community grew what they needed and found uses for everything. The members of the Heritage Garden Club of Troy have a consistent philosophy about both plants and new members—you can never have enough. Find them on Facebook and send a message if you are a plant enthusiast. It might plant a seed of joy. ~ Maggie Barnes

Round Top Park

H

ow 575 acres manages to feel cozy and intimate is a mystery, but Round Top Park in Athens pulls it off. Chairman of the Park Commissioners Richard Bean is proud of the fact that the park offers a lot more than just a swing set and some picnic tables.

There are “areas for picnicking and fellowship, fishing, space for hiking and off-road vehicles, even an airfield,” he says. There are even “love swings.” But first, some history. The park has belonged to Athens Township since a sale fifty years ago from the Borough of Athens. The park commissioners oversee it with a loving dedication and work hard to maintain it. “We have great partnerships with clubs and volunteers to stay on tops of things,” Richard says. “In fact, we have had forty-nine Eagle Scout projects that happened in the park.” Families can rent pavilions for reunions, often reserved for next year on the day of this year’s party. They are so popular that three more were built. There are places to walk your dog. And there’s a stocked pond on the lower level, with a boardwalk for wheelchair access, for snagging largemouth bass and blue gill. The airfield hosts national model airplane festivals. Hunters are allowed in during limited times of the year. Weddings abound in the park. “Yeah, the swings,” Richard laughs. “They call them love swings, because they are just big enough for two people.” The swings overlook a sweeping view of the valley, and are Richard’s favorite spot in the fall. “Those swings also get a lot of lunchtime traffic. Great place to take a break.” Some times of the year see a line waiting for a swing. In fact, that view is so spectacular, Richard says, “We’re planning a deck to extend out more for weddings.” Tozer’s Landing offers boat access on the Chemung River. Winter brings cross-country skiing if there is enough snow. The Athens High School track team runs practice at Round Top to prepare for rugged course conditions when they compete. Round Top is funded through a combination of tower and antenna space rentals, pavilion rentals, and donations. Many of the benches have been given in memory of loved ones. The park is located at 2555 Round Top Road in Athens. It’s a rough ride to get to the upper level, but the view and the beauty of the area are more than worth it. Visit athenstownship.org/ townparks.php for information and pavilion reservations. ~ Maggie Barnes

LeRoy Heritage Museum

T

he original building that housed the LeRoy Heritage Museum had its charms. What it didn’t have was enough space—or indoor plumbing. The museum’s twentieth anniversary collided with the 125th anniversary of a nearby historic hotel, and the two entities merged. The new facility at the former hotel will have its grand opening in the spring of 2022. Longtime volunteer Matt Carl says the museum’s goal is to safeguard the region’s history. He’s been enthusiastically invested in this project his whole life. “The purpose is to preserve the history of southwestern Bradford County, including the townships of LeRoy, Canton, Granville, and Barclay Mountain, and to educate the public about that history.” All aspects of life in that area of Bradford County are preserved in the museum, carefully displayed in exhibits the volunteers design and implement. “LeRoy Heritage Museum owns the largest collection of southwestern Bradford County history available anywhere,” says Matt. “Over the years, we have acquired and consolidated the collections of various local historians and history organizations into our collection.” The museum team takes seriously their role as community educators, offering the first Little Free Library in the county and opening their doors to students of all ages. “We have hosted school tours, homeschool or private school groups, tours for personal care home groups, scouts, and other youth groups. We charge no fee. There is a donation box for those interested in showing their support of our work.” And the community returns that dedication in the form of fundraising. Memberships, an annual campaign, donations, and gift shop sales all go to support the museum. Their biggest event is the popular Barclay Mountain Heritage Day, which draws hundreds of history enthusiasts from seven states. In the past, they have hosted a variety of events including walking tours, quilt shows, house tours, and a Civil War encampment. The group is looking forward to occupying their new space. “It contains larger exhibit rooms, a historic Victorian era ballroom, larger storage rooms, a museum office, meeting room, gift shop, restrooms, and caretakers’ living quarters,” Matt says. This hardy band of volunteers are also skilled at getting the word out about the museum. They are active on Facebook and YouTube. You can watch videos of the transformation of the new museum site, found at leroyheritage.org. The museum is typically open May through September on Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., although they hope to offer more hours when the new facility opens. It will be located at 10097 Route 414, Canton. ~ Maggie Barnes

Barefoot Pellet Company

I

t’s not unusual for a company that sells hardwood pellets to have a BBQ restaurant as a customer. It is unusual for that restaurant to be nine hours away from the pellet business. But Barefoot Pellet Company can proudly say the Moat Mountain Smoke House & Brewing Company in North Conway, New Hampshire, uses their pellets in their grills and smokers. Sounds like they are putting the “secret blend of Appalachian hardwoods” to good use. This is just one of dozens of companies that know they can rely on the Troy, Pennsylvania, outfit to provide them with high quality pellets that produce little ash, but an outstanding flavor. If you are unfamiliar with pellets, Scott Cummings (above) with Barefoot explains how they are used. “Barefoot Pellets are a blend of 100% hardwoods. Our heating pellets are used to heat homes and our BBQ blend pellets are used to cook on their pellet grills or smokers. Our sawdust comes from our own facilities and from other facilities that have passed our stringent testing procedures,” Scott says. Sawdust and wood chips are gathered from the sustainable forests of New York and Pennsylvania. Barefoot is dedicated to the idea of being a green business and a good corporate citizen. Their pellets are known for burning efficiently with low emissions and high heat. Pellets help lessen dependency on fossil fuels, by offering a sustainable alternative, and have a small carbon footprint. “We use every bit of the tree, so that nothing is wasted,” says Scott, who is the fourth generation Cummings to work with hardwood, as the family also runs the successful Cummings Lumber Company and Barefoot Brand Flooring businesses. Pellets can’t be bought at Barefoot Pellets, as they don’t offer retail, But you can purchase them at Hoover Hardware, Woody’s Country Store, Fat Chic Welding, Croft Lumber or look at their website to find a dealer near you. Barefoot is also an asset to the community through its Chamber of Commerce membership and event support, and is a financial support of community organizations. So whether you are warming your home or grilling up some brisket, Barefoot Pellets has the right product for you. One enthusiastic customer put it this way, “I can’t say enough about your Barefoot pellets! They are consistently a high-quality product. Please keep your standards high and never settle!” No worries about that. Barefoot Pellets is located at 22721 Route 14, in Troy. You can find them on Facebook, at their website barefootpellet.com, or by calling 570-297-1297. ~ Maggie Barnes
