The Bradford County Flavorful festivals, fabulous fairs, Pennsylvania-proud parades—Bradford County has enough events throughout the year to fill the most discerning bucket list. What are you waiting for?
Endless Mountains Maple Festival Maple lovers, and those who need to refresh their love of that sweet delight, should plan to celebrate the forty-second annual Endless Mountains Maple Festival April 27 and 28 at Alparon Community Park in Troy. There will be, of course, a pancake eating contest, along with a host of other activities, events, and presentations, including a monster truck show, antique tractor show, demolition derby, maple judging, flea market, mac ‘n’ cheese competition, and rides. Parking is free, camping is available, and there is a small gate admission. Admission for kids five and under is free if they’re accompanied by an adult. For more information call (570) 297-3648, (570) 297-4828, or visit maplefestivalpa.com.
Valley Arts4All “A true celebration of the arts,” Valley Arts4All is May 4 and 5, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., respectively, at Riverfront Park in Sayre. If the success of the past three events is any indication, this year’s incarnation of Arts4All promises to be, well, artful! Look for juried artists, student vendors, community art projects, hands-on art, and a selection of food, music, and crafts. Join Arts4All in supporting the advancement of arts in our schools and communities. See more on Facebook and at valleyarts4all.com. 10
Bucket List Downtown Canton is flourishing and comes alive! This Norman Rockwell-esque event sees the town shut down the main square, hosting live music, food truck options, adult beverage vendors, and much more to welcome residents to gather and guests to join in the fun. This family friendly event is a celebration of the great businesses and assets that lie within this quaint town in Western Bradford County. Sponsored by the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce, this event is on July 13 from 4 to 10 p.m. and is their kick-off celebration, followed by the Classic Car Show in August, Fall Foliage Bike Tour (in conjunction with the Canton Lions Club) in October, and the very popular “Light Night” the Saturday after Thanksgiving. For more information about this event, please visit their Facebook page: Canton Downtown Celebration.
Troy Fair Need to satisfy your cotton candy craving? Haven’t had your share of corn dogs, funnel cakes, strawberry shortcake, or fresh, homemade ice cream? Here’s the solution: Mark your calendar for the 148th Troy Fair at Alparon Community Park July 22 to 27. There is truly something for everyone at the Troy Fair, from the traditional agricultural exhibits and competitions to all kinds of community-based events and displays, music, fair queen crowning, tractor pulls, and lots and lots of great food. Gate admission is small and covers parking, daily non-grandstand events, rides, entertainment, and the fun house. For updates on shows and other fair happenings, see troyfair.com or find the fair on Facebook. visitbradfordcounty.com 11

Canton Downtown Celebration
The Bradford County RiverFest August 15 to 17 will again bring the annual end-ofsummer celebration in Towanda known as RiverFest, and it promises to be as funfilled and exciting as all that have come before. The threeday party includes a carnival, music, local craft vendors, games, all kinds of food, and fireworks. Many folks make RiverFest their annual opportunity to socialize with friends both old and new, neighbors, and former classmates, and you can, too! Contact Alisha Reider for more information at (570) 637-6703.
Wyalusing Valley Wine Festival
Nestled between Towanda and Meshoppen, the tiny borough of Wyalusing hosts an annual celebration of local and regional wines, delicious food, music, and vendors. The 19th Annual Wyalusing Wine Festival, held September 14, noon to 5 p.m., on the Tuscarora Wayne Campus at the corner of Route 6 and Fifth Street, began as a fundraiser for the Wyalusing Valley Museum and has since expanded to help raise funds for the Wyalusing Lions Club. There are typically at least a dozen wineries, each offering delectable samplings of their products. There is plenty of seating and a wine-check service. “It is a great opportunity to try some Pennsylvania wines, dance to some fabulous music, and enjoy the beauty of September along the Susquehanna,” says Morgan Clinton, curator of the Wyalusing Valley Museum. For the latest, visit wyalusingwinefestival.com. 12
Bucket List

National Kayak Angling Adventure
T
here is kayaking. There is fishing. And there is the two of them, combined into one competitive sport. That sport, in the form of the National Kayak Angling Adventure community, is coming to Towanda on August 9 and 10 for a tournament on the Susquehanna River. One of six such events across the country, this weekend will see the county seat fill with professional and amateur kayak anglers in a bid for cash prizes and points on their season. Tournament president Drew Gregory knew he’d found the perfect location for the contest as soon as he saw downtown Towanda. “Such a nice town and with the river running right through it. The families are going to go nuts when they get there,” he explains. Drew—champion angler, teacher, and kayak designer—expects a couple hundred people to attend, as many of the contestants travel with their families in the summer. “The tournament moves around to different locations, so some of the lesser-known towns can showcase what they have. It is our hope that they will return for a family vacation someday.” He calls it the “Fiesta on the Susky,” and it begins with opening ceremonies on Thursday followed by two days of competition, five hours on Friday and eight on Saturday. The event is strictly catch and release. “The entrants take a photo of the fish on a measuring board, then release it,” Drew says. “This is for sport, not eating.” He refers to the Susquehanna as “worldclass fishing” and says one- and two-person teams will be on the hunt for smallmouth bass that will land the fisher cash prizes in different divisions. “This is for the amateur angler as well as the pros,” Drew says. “There’s no pressure, it’s very laid-back. It’s just as much about the families having time together on the river.” Awards will be presented in the historic Keystone Theatre on Towanda’s Main Street, which Drew is excited about. “What a gorgeous setting. Our folks will have a real stage to be presented on.” There is a festival Saturday at Eastside Riverfront Park (227 Old Route 6 Road) with music, food, games for the kids, and gear demos. The after-party will be at the Flying Taco Mexican Grill at 7 State Street. (Drew took the family there on a scouting trip for the tournament and knew it was the ideal spot.) To register for the tournament, visit kayakadventureseries.com or find Drew Gregory Fishing on Facebook. Use the TourneyX app to follow the tournament series results. ~ Maggie Barnes

Don’t Overlook the Overlooks
A
ny time of year, high places mean great views below, and new observation decks at two area parks, both open during the warmer seasons, allow visitors to make the most of them.
Roundtop Park (at 2555 Round Top Road in Athens) already had an overlook from the hillside near Pavilion 9, explains Meade Murland, vice chairman of the Athens Parks Commission. A few benches gave visitors a spot to look out over Athens. “We thought if we provided a deck, they could look out a little further,” Meade says. Richard Bean, the chairman of the board of Athens Township Parks and Recreation, spearheaded the project, applying for and getting $25,000 in gas-rights funds to accomplish it. When the overlook was officially opened, he was surprised to learn it was not only named for him, he was also tapped to give an off-the-cuff speech to inaugurate it. With sweeping views of the Susquehanna and Chemung Rivers in the background, the view was always a popular spot for wedding photographers, and now with the observation deck it’s become a coveted spot for wedding ceremonies as well. Since its opening in the summer of 2022, it’s been further improved with handicap accessibility and parking. Find more information about the overlook and pavilion rentals at athenstownship.org/townParks.php or call (570) 888-2325. Drive up to the observation deck from mid-May to mid-November; after that it may be reached by hiking. Mount Pisgah County Park (at 2181 Wilcox Drive in Troy) inaugurated its new observation deck in June 2023. At the very top of Mount Pisgah, the rocky summit is said to have been a favorite meditation spot for early nineteenth-century Oneida Indian chief, Wetona, whose remains are purportedly buried nearby. A statue of Wetona stands near the overlook. “We wanted to have something there so people could see the views,” says Leah O’Neil of the Commissioner’s office. “On a clear day you can see all the way over to Tioga County.” Michelle Shedden, park supervisor Bob Voda, and maintenance director Garron Kreger worked with contractors to get the observation deck installed and make sure it was handicap accessible. It’s already been used for several weddings. Both parks and overlooks are open seasonally and both have pavilions available for event rentals. For more information on Mount Pisgah County Park, contact bradfordcountypa.org/countyparks or call (570) 265-1790. The observation deck is open from the first Saturday in June until Labor Day. ~ Karey Solomon 26

Adventure Motorcycle Ride
A
vid motorcycle riders will tell you that there is nothing prettier than a ride through the mountains on a multi-colored fall day.
That sentiment comes to life during the Canton Lions Club’s Fall Foilage Tour of the Mountains Adventure Motorcycle Ride. Nearly five years old now, the annual event on the second weekend in October is both a feast for the senses and a helping hand to area nonprofits. Volunteer organizer Frank Watson says, “It started as a way to show off our beautiful region. The rides take place in Bradford, Tioga, Lycoming, and Sullivan counties on mostly unpaved roads, with stops at scenic overlooks.” The Canton Lions Club makes the event happen, with support from local and regional businesses. About 100 riders attend from Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Ohio, New York, and, of course, Pennsylvania. The Canton Lions group works with the local fire department and handles distribution of the money raised, which benefits charities. Frank says the location makes sense for a couple of reasons. “Canton and the surrounding area happen to be centrally located in the heart of a published route that crosses Pennsylvania from east to west known as the ‘Cross PA Adventure Trail.’ Our event is also used to showcase our local towns and their amazing selection of public roads that can be accessed off of the adventure trail.” The hope is that riders will explore those communities and support the businesses who, in turn, support the ride. These are special kinds of motorcycles, with semi tread tires suited to the varying terrain. “This ride is different from your typical road ride that many are familiar with,” Frank explains. “These bikes are used on both paved and dirt roads and have become a huge part of motorcycle touring. Typically, riders of these bikes will load camping gear, food, tools, and spare gas, and thus are very self-sufficient.” But the organized ride offers a lot of help, too, in the form of breakdown assistance and a marked course with turn-by-turn directions. The camping, the food, and the entertainment on Saturday night is included in the registration fee, making this event a bargain and a boost for local charities, like the library, Little League, and Future Farmers of America. In 2023 the ride raised $2,400. Ride headquarters is located in downtown Canton behind the Watson Diesel buildings, where volunteers keep the event on course—or trail, as it were. To register for this event, visit tourarmeniapa.org/ or call (570) 250-0174. ~ Maggie Barnes 28

For the Love of Music and Old Porches
M
ichelle and Roger Hatch love big houses. When they relocated to Towanda five years ago, they found a house perfect for the bed & breakfast they wanted at 101 York Avenue. The interior of the Victorian era mansion now called Hatch House is furnished in restful neutrals, to create a relaxing atmosphere so guests can kick back and let themselves be pampered. Michelle makes hot breakfasts, offers hot tea and coffee and snacks all day, and partners with Grovedale Winery, Deep Roots Cidery, and Endless Mountain Outfitters so guests can enjoy what each offers as they tour the area. Many come for hiking and kayaking on the Susquehanna, though some prefer to simply unwind by the Hatch House pool or on one of many grand porches. Hatch House has three spacious guest rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The experience of being a B&B host clearly agrees with Michelle. “We have had the opportunity to meet some of the most lovely people,” she says. “I’m happy to know there are other people sleeping under the same roof. I’m glad to know they’re safe and sound and enjoying themselves.” She loves opening the house to others, adding “I believe homes with a story need to be shared.” She keeps history alive by telling guests about this 1889 gem, built for a local banker and entrepreneur, Mr. Tracy. The house later served as a Baptist church. Its broad porches are perfect for visiting and also, Michelle thought, as a stage for concerts. Last year she and a number of others organized and held Towanda’s first-ever Porchfest, and it was so successful that it will be expanded and repeated in 2024. Visitors strolled between Towanda front lawns to listen to a variety of music played by thirty different bands and solo artists. Borough manager Lauren Hotaling, who was part of the Porchfest committee, says they had several different vendors selling food, a T-shirt sale that sold out twice, and at least 500 happy audience members. “A lot of good things came out of it,” Lauren says. “The positivity was incredible. People said, ‘You have to do this again.’” There’s a lot of beautiful architecture in Towanda, and many really lovely front porches, so Lauren is sure the event will grow. Look for Porchfest the Saturday following Labor Day weekend and follow Towanda Porchfest on Facebook. Learn more about Hatch House at hatchhousebb.com or call (570) 250-8721. ~ Karey Solomon

Hall’s Candies
O
nce upon a time—and also now—a happy family owned a company making small batch artisanal candies off a maple-shaded byway in Gillett. Hall’s Candies has been sweetening Bradford County (and beyond) for more than fifty years, and with four generations.
Back in 1970, Burton, Leon, and Sally Hall purchased Sally’s Uncle Warter’s taffy business, then made taffy treats to take to county fairs and festivals. Later that same year, they bought Doc’s Candies on Hoffman Street in Elmira, adding homemade fudge to their repertoire. Soon they closed the retail business, built a 400-square-foot manufacturing facility in Gillett, and returned to a seasonal candy operation during summer fairs and holidays. In 2011, Gary Andrews, a nephew (above left), and his wife, Jeanne, purchased the family business and returned it to a year-round operation with wholesale and online selling. Their success meant increasing their production facility by adding on to the original workshop, involving every family member plus several employees, and expanding their sweet menu. Sadly, Sally Hall died in 2020. She’s much missed, but her husband, Lee—at eighty-eight—still helps with dipping chocolates and making brittle. In addition to their cashew, almond, peanut, and pecan brittles, they produce more than ten kinds of fudge, with seasonal additions. There are also chocolates that are cookies, brittle, pretzels, or marshmallows dipped in milk or dark chocolate. This process is as much fun to watch as it is to do and is a favorite attraction for school kids taking a factory tour, who often look wonderstruck at the amounts of chocolate around them. Near Easter, Hall’s makes chocolate bunnies. Every family member and employee has a favorite job and flavor. Gary and Jeanne’s son Greg (above right), who manages the shop and helps his dad with the cooking, likes the chocolatedipped cookies, though Jeanne would choose the milk chocolate covered peanut brittle. “But there’s not a thing I don’t like!” she adds. Bradley’s Country Creamery
P
arker Bradley and his eight-year-old sister Lexi can almost always be found on the family’s farm at 3954 Sportsmans Road in Athens—ringing the register in the store, tooling around the barn on their scooters, or helping Dad clean up after a bottling run. When Bradley’s Country Creamery opened in 2022, Parker and Lexi turned the “Open” sign. Their father, Mark Bradley (above) farms the 250 acres in a twenty-year partnership with his dad, Mike, tending about fifty cows, a mix of Holsteins and Jerseys, the key to Bradley’s Creamline milk. At a time when most were reeling from an unprecedented pandemic, the Bradleys were taking on the future. It was, admits Mark’s wife, Nichole, way out of their comfort zone. Farming is a solitary life—you, the cows, the occasional inspector, the milk truck driver. Mark’s now in the thick of the local small business community. The farm store (open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) features not only the milk he bottles himself, but other locally made food products. His milk can be found in more than half a dozen outlets “down in town.” Regardless of where they put it, it’s flying off the shelves. “Mark told me it would be a dream if we could sell 100 gallons of milk a week,” says Nichole. The first two weeks they were selling 500 gallons a week and now, having settled into a routine, bottle between 300 to 400 gallons weekly. A vending machine run by the Athens School District’s Future Farmers of America club empties in days. “A couple of months in, we had to buy another cooler because we couldn’t keep up with the demand. With the flavors, we were doing forty gallons in the beginning, and now we’re up to seventy-five to eighty.” His whole milk—minimally processed with no homogenization and around 4.2 percent butterfat—is a flavor unto itself. You know immediately that something is different, including the need to shake the bottle to mix in the cream. The other flavors are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, cookies and cream, coffee, chocolate peanut butter, and maple. Everyone has their favorite. The early frontrunner—chocolate peanut butter—was an instant hit, until everyone tried the coffee. And then out came the eggnog for the holidays. Each has its own following. The flavors rotate through the cooler, based on ingredient availability. Maple, for example, will be seasonal during sugaring season. And there’s always a delicious surprise on the horizon. Drop by, find them on Facebook, or call (570) 6510200. ~ Paula Piatt

Gourmet Food on Wheels
W
hen the sun shines and the weather leaves winter behind, some of the best food around is coming on a truck to a venue near you. Bradford County food trucks offer a bountiful variety of styles, and here’s a roundup of the newest ones.
Paul Voorhees once lived in a part of Saudi Arabia where “you could get fresh bread on every street corner.” It inspired him to have a food truck built so he could offer Americans wood-fired Neopolitan pizza, fresh-made to order (above). Maintaining a five-star status for Roughroad Pizza is “a lot of hours and a lot of dedication. I think it’s worth it,” he says. He pays attention to the smallest details, down to the wood used for the oven. The Roughroad menu offers classic pizzas, lots of extra topping choices, and specialties like Chicken Tikka Marsala and Ghost Peppers Ring of Fire pizzas. His pizzas pair well with artisanal beers and wines, so you can often find him at a brewery or winery, and at special events. Find his current location on Facebook, or call Paul at (281) 844-7678 about catering special events. Brandon and Desiree Shepard named their food truck and mobile catering service Chuck and Weezer’s, after their daughters’ nicknames. “All barbecue, all wood-fired home-cooking,” is how Brandon describes it, which takes all takes all night. Slow-cooked brisket and Mexican pulled-pork tacos are a perennial hit. Almost everything they serve comes with their signature condiment: slices of pickled onion. Their smoker-cooked mac-and-cheese is also universally loved. “Hours vary, but we’re typically open from lunchtime until we sell out—and we always sell out,” Brandon says. They’re limited only by the size of their truck, but they’re currently working towards a larger one. Find their destination-of-the-day on their Facebook page; for catering information text Brandon at (570) 250-7735. Comfort food made from meat pasture-raised in Smithfield on Bluebird Ridge Farm travels to fairs, business lunches, and events on the Bluebird Food Truck. Jenna Ashby once owned and cooked in a diner. She says a food truck is more work, and every bit of space inside the vehicle has to count. Smashburgers, hotdogs, and mac-and-cheese anchor the menu, with varying specials. Husband Jeremy helps behind the scenes, as do their children. Learn more on their Facebook page or call (570) 423-6261. The Bradford County tourism office has many food truck options available for planning your next event. Mad Hatter Cafe & Tea Garden
S
howing off the Mad Hatter Cafe that has just celebrated its tenth anniversary, Terry Johnston says, “You don’t get many grumpy people in a bright yellow room.” But she does get a lot of different types of people. “I wanted a place with healthy food options,” she explains. “I have friends that are vegan, keto, gluten-free—and I only eat whole foods— and it was impossible for us all to go out. So, I decided I would open that place.” Terry, who grew up in Athens, first opened downtown in a small space by the park. It was 2013, and they had the first espresso machine in town. She’d been there five years when she saw that her current location, the old Odd Fellow Building at 400 N. Main Street, had a for sale sign with “reduced price.” The bottom floor had been the mercantile. Half of that is now a colorful and sun-filled café with hot drinks, food, and a large stuffed rabbit (waiting for Alice, no doubt). One long table encourages meeting new friends, along with three smaller tables and a window counter. The natural food and supplement shop, 911 Earth, rents the other half of the downstairs. The café is twice as big as her previous space, and she acquired the garden on the side, with the intention of growing her own herbs for the teas she makes (she’s an herbalist). When covid hit, she outfitted the garden with tables and seating and “that saved us.” Terry sources locally whenever possible for the bowls, salads, and wraps. The menu has taken a bit of a new direction recently, thanks to her son Zack. When Terry had health issues that caused her to stop regular hours last summer, Zack started weekly ramen events. All broths and noodles are from scratch. The events did so well—people came from Scranton, Bath, Ithaca, Wellsboro—that Terry decided to reopen with ramen all the time. There is local art on the walls, and in summer there is local music in the garden. But the winter is when it is extra special, because the sun pours in the front windows and people have a cheery spot to meet and hang out. But don’t come on weekends. The Mad Hatter is open Tuesday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Find them and their menu on Facebook or call (570) 731-7183. ~ Lilace Mellin Guignard

Maple Hollow Botanicals
B
eth Ward fully admits that she has been a “nature-loving-plant-stalker” since childhood.
Her obsession with replacing her own chemically made health and beauty products started her on a journey that has culminated in Maple Hollow Botanicals. “It goes back to 2014 when I experimented in my kitchen with my first batch of natural soap,” Beth says. “From that point on I was hooked. I dove into the world of herbalism, devouring books and classes, learning about the health and beauty benefits of plants.” With her family’s help, the hobby grew into a business in short order. “Maple Hollow Botanicals specializes in clean beauty products created with skin-loving plants grown here on our farm in Troy,” Beth says. “Being good stewards to the earth is important to us, so we practice sustainability, reciprocity, and honorable harvest. I usually come to know certain plants personally before deciding the best way to formulate with them. I’ll work with the plant and research the best methods of extraction whether it be an oil infusion, distillation, tisane, tincture, or other method. There are months and months of time and labor in each product that we make, but it’s worth it. It ensures quality and allows us to pass our love of plants on to others.” Beth’s goal was to get away from chemically-based skin products, that are often harmful, and offer the market options that are, by their literal roots in nature, gentler and more beneficial. When asked about customer favorites, Beth reels off most of her catalog. “Facial serums, tea blends, foaming castile liquid soaps, herbal lotions, pain salve and lotion, herbal bar soaps, lip balms, face masks, and deodorants. Specifically, our customers are always excited about our rosemary-mint bar soap, our violet rose facial serum, our Three Trees pain salve, our Om deodorant, and our Minnequa Springs magnesium lotion. These are must-haves for our customers.” Without a brick-and-mortar store, Beth has chosen to work through local retailers, including the Copper Tree Gift Shop, Barnstead Pantry, Cooke’s Pharmacy, and Milky Way Farms in Troy, as well as at Jurnacks, Naturally! in Towanda. They can also be purchased at maplehollowproducts. com and through Delivered Fresh at deliveredfresh.localfoodmarketplace.com. Seasonally, she partners with Greener Pastures Farm and Greenhouse to teach plant-themed workshops, plus sells at several arts and crafts festivals in the area. But even in this day of e-everything, most of Maple Hollow’s reputation is built by word of mouth. And skin! ~ Maggie Barnes

Zen Den Yoga and Wellness Center
“W
e all have this reason for being in Sayre,” says Kelly McElhaney, a critical care nurse for over twenty years who now works at Robert Packer Hospital and is the owner and proprietor of Zen Den. “We do have a civic duty to each other to be well.” It’s a kind of cosmic/karma thing, if you’re inclined to look at it that way. And she does. She says she loves the studio—it’s the welcoming place where she offers yoga and other kinds of wellness opportunities—but adds that it’s what’s happening all around it that’s also very wonderful: a resurgence of downtown Sayre. “The studio is just one little piece of that,” she says. Communities and the buildings and people in them do share some characteristics. They have histories and stories to tell. They need attention, maintenance, purpose, and each other. The building at 204 Desmond Street, which is now home to Zen Den, has been, among other things, a mercantile/boarding house in the 1880s, offices for a newspaper, and studio space for a radio station. It’s had three fires. The last one, in the 1980s, left the building “pretty much a shell.” Kelly and her family had been living in Baltimore, then moved to Sayre seven years ago—she is originally from upstate New York—for her husband’s job at Robert Packer. She explains that she “discovered my yoga practice” while living in California, and “realized if I wanted to stay in a high stress career, I needed an outlet.” Then her husband suggested she open a yoga studio. “We bought the building in 2019,” she continues. “But no one had any idea the world was going to come to a screeching halt.” With over 100 years of previous interior renovations—“God only knows what was in the air here!” Kelly laughs—it proved to be a good time for a family project that required wearing masks. The repurposed studio space includes a large room for yoga practice, Pilates, chair yoga, and hot yoga. There is a dry salt therapy booth—think of it as a mini vacation at the beach (plus, as Kelly notes, “It is good for your respiratory tract and your skin,”), an infrared sauna, rooms for massage, and opportunities for individual instruction. There is some locally made merchandise for sale, the signage comes from local artisans, and even the yoga mats come from a Pennsylvania-based company. Hours and class schedules vary. Up In Arms
U
p In Arms is open year-round, but it’s no surprise that spring and fall are the busiest times at the East Smithfield shooting and hunting supply store. A fall Saturday morning will find the place—styled after a hunting lodge with lots of wood beams and high ceilings—humming with activity in all four corners. A woman hands over her crossbow and asks about a repair. Owner Rodney Hubbard talks her through the options and disappears into the workroom to perform some magic on the bow. Elsewhere, folks are being helped by (above left to right) Doug Freeman, the manager, and employees Deb Alexander and Adam Ganiel. Some are comparing firearms at the front display case beneath an impressive collection of shotguns that spans the wall. Lower cases contain handguns, and nearby shelves offer any caliber ammunition you might need. Supplies to complete hunting expeditions are everywhere you look, from deer scent to hand warmers. Rodney says their clientele is split between repeat customers and new faces. “Our customers share their hunting photos with us, and we share them on our Facebook page,” Rodney says. The conversations around the store are stories of what did or did not work on the last hunting trip and what to do next time. For a decade, Up In Arms has given sportsmen and women a place to learn more about their shooting and hunting passions and find the tools to make outings safer, more comfortable, more enjoyable, and more productive. “Our customers are very skilled and educated,” Rodney says. “In fact, they often suggest products for us to carry.” There are plans in the works that Rodney can’t completely divulge, but he does share some news. They will be moving into firearm modifications, including laser engraving and Cerakote application. Cerakote is a ceramic based finish that can be applied to metals, plastics, polymers, and wood. It helps protect guns against abrasions and wear, resists corrosion, and extends the lifespan of the weapon. There was also a mention of a café in the future. Hunting stories are even better over a good cup of coffee. Up In Arms Shooting Supplies is located at 465 Main Street in East Smithfield, can be found online at uiashootingsupplies.com, and can be reached at 1-888-994-GUNS. You can also follow them on Facebook. They are open Monday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and closed on Sunday. ~ Maggie Barnes

Wyalusing Creekside Park
W
hen it opened in May 2022, Wyalusing Creekside Park at 81 Creekside Drive was so thoroughly embraced by the community it soon seemed as if it had always been there. On the banks of Wyalusing Creek, the park offers kayakers, canoers, walkers, fishermen, picnickers, and disk golf players a green space to enjoy. The park was the result of a kitchen table brainstorming session when Mayor Suky Burgess and her husband, Dave, decided the town needed a park with access to Wyalusing Creek. “Christine Detorre [of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources] suggested the other side of Route 6, which just happened to be owned by my parents, along with other business partners, (collectively known as the Hayseed Group). The land was donated to the borough, and things went full blast from there,” says Suky’s daughter, Marci Dake. Turning the land into a useful recreational space took time, effort, and a lot of donors. To make sure this happened, Suky spent much time and energy convincing others to donate money to help make the park a reality. Hayseed Group members used their talents and muscle for much of the preliminary work, clearing trees and using their earth-moving and excavation skills and equipment to give the contractors a head start. Roads and a quarter-mile walking trail through the park were built, as well as a landing for people-powered boats, a nine-hole disk golf range, three pavilions, and picnic tables. Open spaces, benches, and a pretty grove of trees draw people to meet here for lunch, walks, or simply to contemplate the flowing water. Kayakers and canoes can enter the Susquehanna River where Wyalusing Creek joins it. From conception to realization, the project took a good three years. Because the area is near enough to the Susquehanna for not only watercraft access but also occasional seasonal flooding, all structures needed to be anchored with concrete. “People use it all the time. It’s very quiet, a really nice park,” says Cindy Henning, secretary/treasurer for the borough. The borough contributed $60,000; grants from the DCNR, Cargill, the Bradford County commissioners, and the Endless Mountains Heritage Region, as well as from many private contributors, enabled completion of the first phase for the park. The park is ADA accessible. As yet there is no running water, so it’s equipped with portable toilets, something that could change in phase two or phase three. Joe Perry’s Winery
L
ess than two miles out of downtown Troy, at 324 Elms Road, is a vineyard of 3,500 vines. In 2000, Dave Pierchorowicz bought part of the Marshall Case Century Farm. “I noticed prevailing winds blow downhill all year, except when a storm is coming,” he explains. Grapes need wind to proliferate, so he thought, “We’ll throw 100 vines in and see what happens.” The first vines planted in 2007 grew very well. “This is not grape-growing country,” he says. So why start a winery? Throughout his career in the Army and Special Forces (Green Berets), Dave did over 100 jumps into Europe, often landing in vineyards where he’d enjoy the grapes while laying low. He retired from the Army in 1994 and continued to work for other government agencies, and maybe his roots were calling him—his grandparents were Russian and Polish farmers—but he always wanted to start a winery. He’d also had a goal of turning a barn into a home. Both goals have been met now, with the help of his wife, San Juanita. Joe Perry’s opened in 2019—called after Dave’s father’s nickname—and has a long list of Pennsylvania table wines. Taste either the dry or sweet list, and then enjoy a glass of your favorite. There are no blends, and each wine is named after the grape. Some are familiar— Catawba, Concord, Niagara—and some are not. Who is Louise Swenson? Perhaps someone extremely hardy, like the namesake grape. The tasting room is housed in what was a barn built by Hessians, with a wood stove for when the winds blow cold. During the warmer months, there’s outdoor seating, too. Activities like paint and sips occur year-round, and special events can be held there (for groups over fifteen, they’ll cater). Building No. 9 Grille in town delivers, and their menus are on hand. The winery participates in Harvest Hosts (harvesthosts.com), so members can park their RV on the property. Some folks come because they’re touring Bradford County wineries (see pages 56-57), and locals come again and again for the Marquette—a dry red that’s a favorite—and the slushies. There are four slushy flavors, each with a different wine and fruit combination. Dave says they have such a good reputation because they use real fruit. The winery is open Friday through Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. To drop by at other times, call ahead at (570) 529-2896. Find them on Facebook or check out joeperrys.com. ~ Lilace Mellin Guignard

Knapp’s Bridge
I
n the nineteenth century, William Knapp and his family operated a grist mill and sawmill powered by the water of Brown’s Creek in Towanda. But in 1853, a horse-drawn wagon heavily loaded with lumber caused the original wooden bridge to collapse. Its replacement, built in 1860, was a covered bridge bolstered with Burr Trusses, an American design patented in 1817, which balances the distribution of weight, or dynamic load, as a vehicle crosses the bridge. Thanks in part to that design, the bridge is still there. On the National Register of Historic Places, it’s the only remaining covered bridge in Bradford County. And it’s important enough to have three names—it’s also called Luther’s Mills Bridge and Brown’s Creek Bridge and is located on the eponymous Covered Bridge Road, less than a mile north of Luther’s Mills. Its stone abutments and wooden sides—as well as its peaked roof—make it a picturesque spot for picture-taking and plein air artists, while its six-ton weight limit and just-over-tenfeet height limit precludes tractor trailers and other heavy-duty traffic. Drive through it, and you almost expect to find yourself in a different time. Covered bridges are both rare in the twenty-first century and still practical. Their roofs protect the bridge decking and underpinning from weather and create a sort of magical above-ground tunnel. It’s said that wood-decked bridges have a limited span of usefulness, perhaps only twenty years, but cover that decking with a roof and the bridge can last more than a century. Knapp’s Covered Bridge is said to be the tallest in the state as well as one of the longest, with a span of ninety-five feet. Beneath its wooden decking, the under-structure is solid cast iron. Most of the state’s other covered bridges are in Lancaster County. Bradford County Planner Matt Williams says Knapp’s covered bridge is a significant feature in the county. “It’s important to preserve that. We’d do everything we could,” he says. The bridge was renovated in 2000. The deck and roof were replaced, Matt says, and repairs were made to refurbish wherever necessary, all funded by the transportation improvement division of the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Because the land around the bridge is privately owned, stay in your car (or next to it) and see the bridge that spans more than a century of local history. ~ Karey Solomon

Our Chambers of Commerce Canton calls itself “the friendly town,” and it will only take one visit to concur with that assessment. The Canton Chamber (cantonareachamberofcommerce.com) showcases the warmth of this historic community all year with a full slate of events including festivals celebrating local wines, cheeses, and apples; a classic car show; a block dance; and so much more. Canton has even convinced Santa himself to light up the downtown when it’s time to kick off the holidays. Canton’s rich history, hard-working residents, and beautiful scenery all give the chamber plenty to offer tourists, businesses, and residents alike. Plan your visit soon. The Central Bradford County Chamber, celebrating the adjacent communities of Towanda and Wysox (towandawysox.com), can be found along Route 6, and offers a walkable downtown where local restaurants, shops, businesses, and Towanda’s beautiful 1896 courthouse can be found. Nature lovers can enjoy a leisurely stroll down Merrill Parkway’s walking trail along the Susquehanna River. Both Towanda and Wysox provide a variety of lodging options for visitors coming to enjoy one of the many local festivities, including the annual RiverFest (August), Hometown Christmas (December), a Triathlon and Halloween Parade (October), or SquareRound Dance (summer). Find the CBCCC on Facebook for up-to-date information on all the latest our communities have to offer. And be sure to stop along your drive down Route 6/Main Street! The Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce (pennyorkvalley.com) in Waverly, New York, represents the historically rich Valley communities from both Pennsylvania and New York, including Athens, Sayre, Waverly, and the smaller, vibrant towns and boroughs dotting the countryside. A goldmine of hidden gems awaits at exits 60 and 61 of the Southern Tier Expressway. Interstate 86 (aka Rte. 17) straddles the Twin Tiers of southern New York and northern Pennsylvania and offers easy access to an exciting blend of natural beauty, a host of unique restaurants, shops, and lodging options, and numerous thriving businesses and Main Streets. For local events, check out Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce on Facebook. The Troy Chamber of Commerce (troychamberofcommerce.com) describes its location as the “crossroads of historical Routes 6 and 14” at the heart of the Endless Mountains. The area plays host to a wonderful mix of events throughout the year, including the Endless Mountains Maple Festival, the PA Heritage Festival, and the Troy Fair. Recreation options include the nearby State Game Lands on Armenia Mountain (hunting, fishing, camping) and Mount Pisgah state and county parks (hiking, water activities) and outdoor sporting facilities in and near the town. Troy has a charming downtown, with tree-lined streets, Victorian homes, and businesses including bed and breakfasts/inns, specialty shops, and welcoming eateries. Don’t miss anything Troy has to offer. The Wyalusing area is where the gift of the past joins with the present. The Greater Wyalusing Area Chamber of Commerce (wyalusing.net) is committed to presenting events such as the Community Music Festival, the North Branch Triathlon, and other unique happenings showcasing the history, the magnificent Susquehanna River, and the area’s bucolic settings. These events are fun for residents and visitors alike, and offer both the opportunity to enjoy everything this part of Bradford County has to offer, from restaurants, hotels, and Main Street businesses, to outdoor adventures like kayaking, hiking, and taking in the famous Wyalusing Rocks and Marie Antoinette overlooks.
