wolf came from fables and fairy tales. This mystical creature was portrayed in stories as dangerous and lurking. However, this changed when I met a elementary school. An advocacy group brought a female to campus, and seeing the way she moved and responded shyly to human contact, I became curious. I read about the controversy surrounding this animal that once was indigenous to Colorado. I have come to know that wolves are an active and necessary part of balanced and healthy ecosystem.

Colorado’s native wolves were hunted and trapped to extinction in the 1940s, and in 2020, Coloradans voted to reintroduce wolves by 2023. While ranchers have valid concerns about how wolves impact product

the healthy, bio diverse habitats that result from the presence of indigenous, wild predators.

Colorado’s single documented wolf pack got its start when a wolf migrated from outside Yellowstone National Park into Jackson County, CO. The female has since found a mate and birthed a litter of puppies. Light gazing is the perfect way to get the family out of the house and go somewhere new or a place less frequented. Or hey, make plans without the kids and go out with your partner or friends for a drink and a stroll under the illuminated trees and eves for a quiet, yet festive, time.

Perhaps it began for me during the years I spent with my Dad at Christmas in Southern California. We went down to the docks and watched the boat parade. The docks were beaded with salt dew, I cuddled under a blanket, and I liked blurring my eyes so the light cast onto the water blended into 100 colors like a Monet painting. While My Dad chatted and drank with friends, I watched and waited for the tallest and most decorated sailboat to drift by.

Or maybe it started when I used to sing carols on the Aspen Sardy House deck. I was part of a small children’s choir run by Julie Paxton, and we dressed in our best warm winter apparel to sing in the freezing cold before the grand lighting of the big old pine tree. Honestly, I don’t remember liking to sing in the cold that much, but I do remember loving the festivities

As reported by Jamie Malanowski in Smithsonian Magazine in 2016, the Johnson, Thomas Edison’s business partner, saw an opportunity for using the recently invented incandescent light bulb in a new fashion. Johnson hand-wired Edison’s blue, red, and white bulbs and strung them up on a tree in his 36th Street townhouse in New York City. He invited reporters to come see his stunt, and W. A.. Croffut, a writer for the Detroit Post and Tribune, reported, that “It was brilliantly lighted with … 80 lights encased in these dainty glass eggs, and about equally divided between white, red and blue … One can hardly imagine anything prettier.”

It would be a few decades before lights reached the homes of the lay person, as electricity was not widely available and a 16-bulb strand cost $12 ($350 today). But by 1915, the cost was around $1.75, and colorful bulbs lit the trees of thousands of homes across America. Today, light strands decorate more than 80 million homes and account for 6% of the electricity consumed in the month of December in America. Lights drape trees, yes, but also homes, businesses, hotels, towers, and just about anywhere someone is willing to climb and strand stringed lights. So, with all this work and power usage, we may as well enjoy them for the short period they illuminate our lives.

1. My childhood tradition won’t be repeated at the SARDY HOUSE this year, after 37 years of annual tree lighting. Unfortunately, like other historical gems and landmarks in the Valley, the Sardy House has been sold and resold and is currently closed.

2. Don’t fret, Aspen still has you covered for lights and festivities. THE LITTLE NELL will hold its annual tree lighting in the hotel’s courtyard. Santa will make an appearance, as will treats for the littles. Cash bar for adults. (DECEMBER 11– 6:00 PM)

3. All winter, Aspen boasts a magical display of lights on the HOPKINS AND HYMAN AVENUE MALLS. Every tree is braided in lights of every color. Grab a hot chocolate and warm sandwich from Mill Street Melts (formerly Popcorn Wagon), and stroll through the magic. The tallest trees on the mall glow colors, and shapes.

SNOWMASS VILLAGE

4. THE SNOWMASS CHAPEL itself is already picturesque, but when the 40-plus trees are decked out, it’s sure to impress even the most bah humbug guy (i.e. my husband). Expect a nativity display, Kris Kringle, cocoa, and carolers, with a joyous countdown to the tree lightings. I have never been to the ceremonious lighting, but I have seen the chapel all decked out, and the lighting ceremony is on my list this year.

5. While pandemic times presented many challenges, it also allowed us to create some unique artistic experiences. Aspen/ Snowmass LUMINESCENCE is a perfect example. Leave it to art to heal and bring folks together. Luminescence is an interactive light exhibit combining holiday spirit with modern light technology. It elevates light displays to the next level. Keep your ski clothes and snow boots on, as you will walk Fanny Hill in the dark, through and among the light installations.

6. Discover Basalt draped in lights from every tree and business. It is just, well, a sweet place to go for some holiday cheer. The town hosts MERRY ON MIDLAND with horse-drawn carriages, singing, a you guessed it, our favorite jolly old elf. (DECEMBER 10, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM)

7. Willits feels festive at night all year long with the light-latticed restaurant row on Market Street, and something is almost always happening at TACAW. And here’s an occasion when shops stay open late and merrymakers, carolers and … the Big Guy. (DECEMBER 3 –4:00 – 6:00 PM)

8. The Chamber’s FIRST FRIDAY LIGHT UP CARBONDALE block party is so outrageously festive that You-Know-Who brings his favorite elves to help him light one of the biggest spruce trees in town from atop a crane. Four blocks of Main Street and horse-drawn carriages, with the most beautiful team of black Percherons donning real brass jingle bells. While the kids play and scavenge for candy canes, you can chat with friends, restaurant hop, or visit an eclectic mix of 20+ downtown shops and galleries.

REDSTONE

Inspired by European outdoor holiday street markets, the REDSTONE HOLIDAY MARKET will host a local artist at each of the businesses lining Redstone Boulevard, from the Redstone Inn to Crystal Dreams B&B, where a special visitor from the North Pole will make an appearance. Find handmade gifts and artisanal wares at each booth. Holiday-party-hop the Redstone General Store and Redstone Mountain Mercantile, then when the day of festivities winds down, stroll down the boulevard to Propaganda Pie or the Redstone Inn for dinner. This Victorian town is an outing destination both day and night all winter.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS

10. “WINTER ON THE MOUNTAIN” at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park is a light display that’s impossible to miss. You can see the half-million lights from almost anywhere in Glenwood Springs. Every Saturday in December, patrons of the park enjoy a musical Christmas tree, live music, a s’more bar, a real bar, rides on the Alpine Coaster, and, of course, visits with the man in red. Share the holiday spirit through the Gondola Giving project. Bring a $25 dollar City Market LIFT-UP, and receive four free gondola tickets ($100 value).

11. HOTEL COLORADO is a sight to behold during the holidays. The historic landmark hotel has hosted the likes of Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft, and the “unsinkable” Molly Brown. Walk from downtown over the pedestrian bridge to lighting that surrounds the hotel’s landscaped grounds, lit fountain and courtyard, with colorful lights beaming up at the hotel’s iconic towers. The inside is always tastefully decorated and there is a wonderful gingerbread house display. I plan to make a night of this light destination with my little lady. After a soak in the hot springs, a wander through the courtyard, and hot chocolate (with whiskey for mom) at the historic bar, I know my toddler will sleep well

12. Palisade’s annual PARADE OF LIGHTS is planned around a different theme every year. This year, “A Very Vintage Christmas.”

whole weekend of festivities with a parade at 5:00 PM Friday. In Colorado’s wine country, it’s all about tastings, from the festival’s soup and gingerbread contests to gotta-tryit visits to nearby vineyards.

WHAT IS YOUTHENTITY?

Youthentity is the Roaring Fork Valley home base of ProStart® – a career and technical education program where high school students can earn skills and gain experience for a possible career in the food service industry. Students learn culinary techniques and restaurant management principles. They also build workplace skills that translate into any career path, such as effective communication, teamwork, professionalism, and time management.

Youthentity aims to prepare students for successful futures by teaching them the skills that impact their lives. Founded in 2002, Youthentity began as an experiential learning program for Roaring Fork Valley youth. Today, Youthentity serves over 6,000 students, providing young people throughout the state of Colorado.

Elementary and middle school students learn the critical concepts of money management – including saving, investing, debt, interest, and more – in Youthentity’s I am Financial Knowledge workshops; the organization’s career exploration program, Career Academy, offers high school students the chance to explore careers while working alongside industry professionals.

The team was judged on the timed execution of a three-course meal, including presentation, complexity, and technique. Throughout the school year-long program and months of prep leading to the competition, students become versed in the language of culinary art. The vocabulary of the professional chef is a patois of French cooking terms, modern kitchen tools, and phrases you’ve likely heard on Iron Chef, like “mounting with butter.” Here are a few

(BROON-wahz) n.,v.,adj. This is one of the six basic types of knife cuts recognized as an essential culinary skill by the Michelin Guide (which has been published by the French tire company since 1900 and awards chefs and restaurants worldwide with coveted one, two, and three-star reviews. The brunoise is the smallest and most delicate of cuts. It begins as a julienne (see below) and ends as a perfectly measured 3 mm cube.

JULIENNE (JOOL-ë-’en) n.,v.,adj. Also referred to as a “matchstick” cut, this involves squaring off your vegetable into precise lengths, then into

BUTTER POACHED FRESHWATER PRAWN

SERVES FOUR 4 6-8 ct. freshwater prawns 20 oz. unsalted butter 2 tsp. Tajin seasoning kosher salt and black pepper

• “6-8 ct.” = Extra colossal-sized shrimp, sized at 2 to 2 ½ oz. each.

• Place the shrimp in a chilled bowl with ice packs to keep them at 41°F or below.

• Peel and devein the shrimp. Reserve the shells for the Chili de Arbol Sauce recipe.

• the iced bowl.

• Cut the butter into small pieces.

• In a small pot, slowly melt the butter one piece at a time, whisking to maintain an emulsion. As the butter slowly melts, add pieces more quickly. Continue whisking, being mindful to keep the temperature below a simmer.

• Once the butter has been incorporated, add the Tajin and the shrimp.

• Poach the shrimp at approximately 160° F for ten minutes.

• Complete the following recipes as the shrimp poach. Reserve the salt and pepper to season the shrimp when plating.

The Career Academy experience as a whole –both competition and the culinary class – opened my eyes to the career opportunities that exist in the industry. And it’s taken me to some cool places. Last year I went to Europe, in part to cook, and am heading to Japan this summer.

BEST CULINARY PRACTICES

Food safety, proper handling, and food storage are essential in any hospitality industry training. At the competition, students are expected to follow stringent protocols. Although home chefs rarely reach for nitrile gloves when plating up dinner, it’s good to know the reasons behind the rules.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS

• After handing raw protein or possible food allergens, chefs thoroughly wash hands and reach for a clean knife and cutting board. This prevents cross-contamination of allergens or food borne bacteria on uncooked protein onto raw ingredients, such as fresh herbs.

• Use food-safe nitrile gloves to handle ready-to eat-food. This prevents the spread of bacteria from chef to patron.

• Keep raw proteins at or below 41°F. Or above 135°F. The“danger zone” in between these temps is where bacterial growth can cause food-borne illness. Use an instant-read thermometer when cooking proteins to assure that they are being brought to the ideal temperature.

FOOD MANAGEMENT

• Measure small increments on a digital scale that measures milliliters and/or measures two decimal places of a gram. By measuring weight instead of volume (as when using a measuring cup), you can assure that each time you make a recipe, the proportions are exact, creating consistent results every time.

PRESENTATION

• Mix 8 parts water with 1 part rice wine vinegar in a small container. Dip a cheesecloth in the liquid and ring it out. Use this before plating a dish to wipe plates down to remove blemishes and spots. (Here’s a way to tackle those spots on your wine glasses...)

1 tsp. fresh squeezed lime juice

3 tsp. olive oil

1 tsp. shallot, brunoise

1 tsp. jalepeño, brunoise kosher salt and black pepper

• This dish is similar to ceviche, in that the lime juice “cooks” the shrimp.

• Peel, devein, and mince the shrimp.

• Add the lime juice and olive oil to the shrimp and mix well.

• Add the shallot and jalapeño to the shrimp and toss together. Chill in a sealed container.

• Reserve the shallot and jalapeño trim for the Chili Del Arbol Sauce that follows.

YUCA FRITA

SERVES FOUR

1 yuca root (approx. 400 g) 1 cup vegetable oil for frying kosher salt to taste

NOTE: Yuca is also commonly known as yucca or cassava.

• For the competition, students used metal rings to shape each slice of yuca root into a “basket handle” shape as it was frying. They then used the yuca “handle” to cradle the prawn on top of the sauces.

• Heat a small pot of oil on high heat to approximately 325°F.

• While the oil heats, use a peeler to remove the coarse outer skin of the yuca. Use a mandolin slicer to make paper thin lengthwise slices of yuca.

• Trim each slice to straighten the edges and cut the slices into 1/4-inch-wide strips.

• Puncture small, evenly-spaced holes down the length of each strip.

• Use a pair of tongs to gently lower a slice of yuca root into the pot to fry.

• Fry the yuca until it reaches an even, blond color and is nice and crispy – approximately 3 minutes. Transfer the yuca to a small sheet pan with a rack and allow it to cool slightly.

• Repeat until all of the yuca root slices are fried. Season with salt to taste.

PRAWN CHILI DEL ARBOL SAUCE

SERVES FOUR 5 shrimp shells 2 oz. olive oil 1 tbsp. tomato paste 1 chili del arbol 12 oz. chicken broth 3 cilantro sprigs pinch Ahumado Blend by Roaring Fork Spice Co. 2 oz. unsalted butter kosher salt and black pepper jalapeño, shallot, and tomato trim.

• Heat a small pan on high heat. Add the olive oil and shrimp shells and sauté the shells for approximately 2 minutes.

• Add the tomato paste, chili de arbol, jalapeño, shallot, and tomato. Sauté to brown the vegetables and the tomato paste –approximately 4 minutes.

• Deglaze with chicken broth and add the cilantro and spice blend.

• Reduce the sauce by half of the volume –approximately 10 minutes.

• return to a small pot to continue to reduce the strained sauce by another half of the volume –approximately 4 minutes.

PLATE IT UP

• Warm two 11-inch plates. Wipe the plates down to remove blemishes and spots. Dry plates completely with paper towels.

• For the competition, the students executed an intricate plate design using ring molds to create precision in the placement of each element. At home, invision a clock face when plating your dishes.

• Start by placing approximately a quarter of the guacamole at “9 o’clock.” Use a spoon to create a well in your scoop of guac for containing any excess sauces as you create the rest of the presentation.

• Spoon servings of Aguachiles on top of the Guacamole, then spoon servings of Pico on top of the Aguachiles. Flatten with a spoon.

• When adding the Chili Del Arbol Sauce, imagine an array of sauce-dots designed in sequentially smaller portions. Start at “4 o’clock,” then proceed to 3, 2, 1 and “12 o’clock.”

• Gently cradle a prawn in a slice of fried yuca root, and place it on top of the Gaucamole, Pico, and Aguachilis. Repeat, arranging the prawns to that the tails face the dots of sauce.

• Remove from the heat and mount with butter. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer the sauce to a small squeeze bottle and keep warm for plating.

2 duck breasts kosher salt and black pepper

2 oz. unsalted butter

2 garlic clove, peeled

1 sprig fresh rosemary 1 sprig fresh thyme

NOTE: “Pekin” is a duck breed raised for meat. This dish is not the traditional Asian dish known as “Peking Duck.”

• Preheat a sauté pan on medium heat.

• Trim excess fat and silver skin from the duck breast with a boning knife. Score the fat side of the duck breast diagonally across, cutting through the fat but not into the meat. Repeat this scoring from the opposite direction to make a diamond pattern approximately one centimeter across. Season with salt and pepper.

• Increase the heat of the sauté pan to high. Place the duck breast with the fat-side down in the sauté pan. Let the duck breast fully render until the skin is crispy and brown, approximately 8 minutes.

• Remove excess fat from pan and reserve.

• Turn the duck to the other side. Add the butter, garlic, rosemary, and thyme. Tilt the pan slightly and use a spoon to baste the crispy duck skin with the infused butter.

• Cook the duck breast until it approaches medium (+/- 135°F) and transfer it to a small sheet pan with a rack. Allow it to rest for a minimum of 8 minutes before slicing it.

DUCK FAT CLEARWATER SUNCHOKES

SERVES FOUR

6 oz. clearwater sunchokes

2 cups water

2 oz. duck fat

kosher salt and black pepper

NOTE: Sunchokes are also known as “Jerusalem Artichokes.”

• Cut the sunchokes into quarters by slicing them lengthwise and then crosswise.

Place the sunchokes into a sauce pan. Top with water, cover, and bring to a boil until the sunchokes are just tender. (Approximately 6 minutes.) Strain.

• Heat a small sauté pan on high heat. Add the half of the duck fat that was reserved from the Pan Roasted Pekin Duck Breast recipe. Sauté the sunchokes until they are evenly golden brown and crisp.

• Remove from the pan, drain any excess fat, and season with salt and pepper.

3 oz. royal trumpet mushrooms

3 oz. clamshell mushrooms

3 sprigs sage

2 oz. reserved duck fat

1 oz. unsalted butter

3 oz. petite peas

kosher salt and black pepper

• Heat a small sauté pan on medium heat.

• Cut the trumpet mushroom stems into coins. Quarter the caps.

• Trim the clamshell mushroom ends and combine with the trumpets.

• Chiffonade the sage.

• Heat the reserved duck fat in the sauté pan and add the mushrooms.

• As the mushrooms brown, add the sage and butter. Add the peas, season with salt and pepper, and remove from the heat. Remove excess fat.

• Reserve all mushroom trim for the sauce recipe that follows.

SERVES FOUR 8 oz. cherry juice

2 oz. frozen pitted cherries

• Heat a small pot with cherry juice, cherries, rosemary, thyme, garlic, tomato paste, sage, sunchokes, and mushrooms. Stir to dissolve the tomato paste

• Bring to a boil and reduce by half, skimming any fat that comes to the surface.

• Add duck stock and reduce again by half.

CHAMBORD CHOCOLATE MOUSSE

SERVES SIX 4 oz. Noel 58.5 chocolate 8 oz. heavy whipping cream 1 oz. Chambord black raspberry liquor 2 egg yolks

NOTE: Noel is a manufacturer of high-end culinary chocolate couverture. 58.5 refers to the ratio of cacao to cocoa fat. If you cannot with a similar cacao content.

• Bring a small pot of water to a boil.

• Melt the chocolate with a double boiler just until melted and remove from the heat.

• While the chocolate cools, whip the heavy cream to form soft peaks.

• Combine the Chambord and egg yolk and mix well. Combine this with the chocolate and mix well.

• Place a small amount of the whipped cream into the chocolate and mix well with a rubber spatula to ensure that the mixture is evenly incorporated and that there are no lumps or streaks. Gently fold the remaining whipped cream into the chocolate mixture, to maintain the maximum volume of air in the mousse.

• Transfer the mousse to a small pastry bag to divide the mousse evenly between three Silikomart Samurai 110 molds.

TAHITIAN VANILLA BEAN BAVARIAN

SERVES SIX 1 pkt. gelatin (¼ oz.) ¼ cup water 8 oz. whole milk 4 oz. sugar 4 egg yolks 6 oz. heavy whipping cream 2 Tahitian vanilla beans

• Mix the gelatin and water together to bloom the gelatin (i.e., letting it hydrate for approximately 3 minutes.)

• Meanwhile, heat the whole milk in a small pot to a simmer and remove from heat.

• While the milk is heating, combine the sugar and egg yolk.

• Use a paring knife to split the vanilla bean in half lengthwise. Use the backside of the knife to scrape the seeds from the bean and add this to the warm milk.

• Add the bloomed gelatin to the warm milk and mix well with a small whisk to dissolve.

These annual trips to the Markley Hut at Thanksgiving with a small group of families always marked the beginning of winter, and I looked forward to it once the leaves started falling. An effortless way to spend time with your best buds, deep in the woods in a cozy hut. Flash forward 30 years, and the experience is still one that I look forward to, but with my own kids, it hardly seems so “effortless.”

My dad (a.k.a. “Boppa” to his grandkids) wanted to share the hut experience with the next generation, and we decided that we would make a new tradition of heading into the mountains with my kids in

Since my husband, Carson, has weekdays off as a ski patroller, this worked well for nabbing my dad’s birthday pretty close to the date.

PLANNING OUR TRIP

warmth and melting snow for water, mattresses (some in bunk rooms, some in private rooms), and solar power for lights. There is no running water, no cell service (ahhhh), and no toilets (but the outhouses are quite clean and some even have great views). You could not ask for a cozier place to spend a snowy night in the woods.

The bunk-loft of my childhood memories was built in 1964, and besides the green light in the loft (indicating a severe lack of insulation), the only other thing I remember from our early trips there was that the hut took FOREVER to warm up. With a wood stove being the only source of heat, the poorly insulated structure was always freezing. Thankfully, the old hut was torn down and rebuilt in a beautiful sunny meadow with views up to the ski slopes of Green Mountain. Al Beyer Design, having remodeled many of the original Braun Huts, knew all of the tricks to maximize space in

HAPPY TRAILS

As Carson and I packed up for the overnight outing, I played the memories in my head of ascending the skin track with my friends. I

My dad always retold stories of my brother and me curled up in sleeping bags, napping on the way to the hut on trips from before I can remember. I was sure Wade, our easy second child, would love the free ride. Tanner, our four-year-old, was pretty

“This will be so fun. Wade will nap in the sled while Tanner skis until she needs a break, and then she can hop in for a bit too. Easy peasy. We’ll be at the hut in less than two hours. I mean, that’s how it was when we were kids.” I ran through the plan in my head a few times, not giving much thought to needing alternative strategies.

We grabbed the rental pulk from the Ute Mountaineer, my family’s outdoor s tore that my dad started in 1977 and I now run, and headed off to load it up at the trailhead.

EPIC PARKING LOT SCENE

For the Markley Hut, you park at the old Ashcroft Ghost Town. The by the snowplow that clears Castle Creek Road and the Ashcroft parking area. It never ceases to amaze me how big that snowbank is. Even in the early season, it is at least 10 feet tall (or it feels that way when you have to get your kids and your stuff over it). At the top, you look down at an icy hill that serves up an unexpectedly treacherous off-camber descent onto the trail. As we tried to get the pulk down the hill going across the fall-line, I should have known we were in for a rough start. Wade, nestled in his sleeping bag and bivvy sack, tipped over during the snowbank descent and ostrich-ed his head into the powder. So much for easy peasy.

We tried talking him into getting back into the sled, assuring him that the scary part was over and it would be a cruiser nap to the hut. He refused by screaming at the top of his lungs. Wrapping him in the sleeping bag and strapping it down didn’t go much better. He the ground to topple him out of the sled. Back to the drawing board…

PLAN B

In my memory of our childhood trips, all we had to do was show up, eat some candy that the “Forest Fairy” had left along the trail, and have an awesome sleepover with our pals. Why was Wade making this so hard? How could he not enjoy the sun on his face while being effortlessly carted up to a magical cabin for a birthday party, complete with cake?

Reasoning with a toddler, as we all have learned, is an exercise in futility. I lifted him up onto my shoulders, thankful my 18-month-old was barely 20 pounds. And we had four adults to carry the food, sleeping gear, and extra clothes for the kids.

After 30 minutes on my shoulders (or was it three hours?), I hoped to get Wade into the sled for a nap. I tried again, and this time he only protested a little. Grateful for his exhaustion, yet nervous that we had missed the holy “nap-window,” I settled him in the sled and sent my husband off with strict instructions to not stop until he woke up. It was a human powered game of “roll through the stop signs so your baby doesn’t wake up” and we were not about to lose.

INVITING THE FOREST FAIRY

Only one problem: Carson was too fast for our pace with four-yearold Tanner, who was slowly but surely making her way up the trail

and energy. I knew she couldn’t make it the whole way, but didn’t want to risk missing a nap for Wade by having Carson wait for her. Hmmm … that pesky Plan B that I didn’t put thought into was creeping up again!

We cruised for a while, with Nana and Boppa proving to be way better cheerleaders than I could ever be. (We are lucky to live close to my parents. I have two sets because my parents divorced when I was young, and we make a great extended family. It is amazing, and both sets of grandparents get plenty of time with my kiddos.) Tanner and Wade are at ease with them, sharing their authentic selves at all times. Whether it is the giggles of delight, or the frustrations of a tantrum, my parents have been through it all alongside Carson and me, and we couldn’t be more grateful for their support. Eventually, Tanner hit the wall, and despite snacks, candy, and accolades, she was done. Even the Forest Fairy’s treats up ahead could not get her to take more than three steps at a time. Now where was Carson with that sled and its *hopefully* napping little boy?

A tough little girl and her favorite pack mule. Keeping the hard part (the ski-in) fun is key to a successful hut trip. Don’t forget the gummies, hot cocoa, and a Plan B to help everyone get there with a good attitude.

MAMA SHERPA TO THE RESCUE

Up onto my shoulders Tanner went for round two of my endurance training for the day, this time a bit heavier. I had to dig deep now to keep going with a 30-pound child on my shoulders. caught up to Carson and the sled, and Tanner got the break she deserved, chatting about the birds, the sun, and the trees. Fifteen minutes went by with everyone calm, happy, and skiing at the same pace. This was the trip I saw in the reels in my head: Cozy kids in a sled, mom and dad sharing a lovely skin in the woods, and Nana and Boppa chatting with the kids to keep them entertained. This wasn’t so hard! Why was I beating myself up for the last hour of logistical shenanigans?

REALITY CHECK

And then we came to the avalanche paths. I distinctly remember these paths from my childhood. Knowing nothing about avalanches other than to fear them, I used to scurry across these paths as fast as my little legs would take me, sure that if I could just go quickly I would beat any avalanche. It didn’t occur to me that my parents would never risk our lives and enter these paths if there was any avalanche danger.

As a parent this time around, I felt at ease as we skied up to the edge of the path. I had years of experience and knowledge under my belt, as did my husband and my father. We had all of the required avy

Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol), and we had checked the conditions in the days leading up to the trip on the Colorado Information Analysis Center (CIAC) website.

The rating system uses a danger scale to help backcountry travelers assess what terrain is safest to travel. With a Low Danger rating for the day, we felt comfortable traveling across the known slide paths on Express Creek. There are many factors that go into the danger rating for a day, but new snow and/or high winds are usually factors that contribute to an increased risk. With a lack of both of these in the past couple days, combined with the CAIC forecast, which we had checked that morning, we knew that we were safe to cross the paths without worry.

What we didn’t factor in was that old us to cross 100 yards of a steep, icy sideslope at a 30-degree angle with a sled full of kids and gear. Ugh. I was not about to wake Wade up to get him out of the sled. That annoying lack of Plan B was knocking again, but wait, I assured myself – when it comes to gear and safety, we pretty much always have a Plan B.

LANDMARKS

We always travel with a repair kit, which bindings, and parachute cord (a thin but strong rope that can be used for just about anything). We made a handle by tying a length of the cord to the back of the sled on the uphill side. This allowed me to control the tilt of the pulk as Carson pulled it up the side-sloped

ground without spilling any gear or children into the snow downhill of the trail.

We survived the avalanche paths, and made decent time to the trail split off down to the hut without drama. Wade wanted to walk, and had the best time playing on the path and trying to jump over the post holes others had made in the snow. As we rounded the corner and the hut came into view, my kids exploded with the “horse to the barn” enthusiasm that we all know so well.

MAKING MEMORIES

In the vein of packing too much for travel with kids, we ended up bringing Wade’s strap-on Nordic skis for him to play around the hut, and Tanner’s alpine skis for the way down. Along with the Nordic skis she skied in on, this equals three pairs of skis for two kids. That kind of math is enough to make you feel crazy!

We found one of our favorites by local author Jill Sheeley about her dog Frazier and her daughter Courtney (who I grew up with). We went to bed with dreams of snowstorms and mountain peaks in our heads, and one kid nestled in with each parent

Having kids who rise with the sun has made me grateful for wintertime’s later sunrises and longer mornings for slumber. As the peaks lit up around us, my daughter’s eyes sprang open and she gasped at the beauty. “Mommy look at the pink mountains!”

At that moment, I knew that all of my second-guessing on the trail was worth it for this opportunity to rise early, deep in the mountains of our backyard. An opportunity to struggle up a mountain and to feel the pride of accomplishing something challenging and new. An opportunity to spend a night with three generations quietly appreciating the beauty in our natural surroundings before returning to our hectic lives.

We ate the requisite Boppa’s Pancakes (the same ones I looked forward to all those years ago), packed up, and headed out the door hoping for better success on the downhill. Tanner clicked into her alpine skis and was giggling the whole way down the “biggest tree trail ever” while Wade peacefully napped in the sled as Carson hit

We planned this trip, in part, so our kids might one day say, “Man, that was so much fun!” Maybe one day they will look back on this trip the way I look back on my childhood adventures. My kids have asked repeatedly when we can take another hut trip, so their fun memories make it a success for me. Was it the trip I had dreamed of? No way.

When there are more people to feed than backs to carry the gear, a sled of some sort is essential for arriving at a hut without taking multiple trips. If it is not completely packed full of gear, it is always a cozy spot for the littlest kids to ride, or the bigger ones to take a short rest. I like to make sure the majority of the weight is still on my back to maximize comfort and in the sled. I know that is not always possible when kids climb in as the trail goes on, but having heavy weight in the sled adds friction to overcome with every step. I love the Ski Pulk that can be lowered to help with tracking on rough terrain. As this is a specialized piece of room to store) another piece of gear. Any time you are venturing into avalanche terrain, it is imperative you have an avalanche safety kit, made up of a beacon, a shovel, and a probe. However, this kit will do nothing for you without the proper training in using each piece of equipment. I recommend to everyone going into the backcountry to take at the minimum an Avy 1 course. Even if you don’t think you will end up in avalanche terrain, backcountry travel can lead you there accidentally, and having the knowledge and tools to return home is invaluable.

An avalanche beacon, or transceiver, is the tool you want to be an expert at using, but never have the opportunity to use it in a true emergency. There have been many technological advances in

The Alu240 is a 2.4-meter probe, with marked measurements so you know how far down you have to dig. It also has a quick-lock assembly for deploying quickly, and a wide gauge tip for

She emphasizes the importance of including them, so children might walk mom or dad down the aisle.

“It is so fun to help to make memories for a blended family,” Slossberg said. “Because that’s what we do – we make memories.”

Older adults in our community sometimes need some TLC. A LITTLE HELP is a volunteer network that connects neighbors to neighbors, and supports the Western Slope from Aspen to Grand Junction. Services include grocery and pharmacy pickup, light yard work, snow shoveling, home organizing, light housework, gutter cleaning, or providing a ride to the grocery or pharmacy. Sometimes, it’s as simple as checking in and saying Hello. This help often makes it possible for individuals to live independently in their beloved home, and can help with isolation and loneliness.

“Members are always very positive and grateful. And what we have also seen, which isn’t surprising, is that many times a volunteer will develop a friendship with that member and become more of a presence in their life,” said RICK SMITH, A Little Help Western Slope coordinator.

2. Every few years in the fall, we’re blessed with a perfect combination of weather factors. Temperatures drop cold enough to freeze Maroon Lake, yet there is not enough snow to force an early seasonal road closure of Maroon Creek Road up to the MAROON BELLS WILDERNESS AREA . Hoping that this was the case, Meg and Packy Westfeldt brought their one-year-old daughter Zoe up to the Bells for MEG WESTFELDT

3. ‘Tis the season! Boot packing season! Every October and November, as soon as there’s enough snow, boot packers volunteer to hike the HIGHLAND BOWL . They slowly and methodically traverse the slope, trudging uphill to pack the base layer of snow in order to prevent avalanches. The reward for all this work? Three days will earn you a seven-day Valley Pass. However, many boot packers will agree that the result of their effort is the true reward. Without their work, we wouldn’t get to enjoy our epic days in the Bowl, among of the best in-bounds backcountry skiing in North America. BEN ALEY

How often do you meet a true local?

Gene Schilling is a Colorado native. He grew up in Redstone, where his parents started a motel. He attended Carbondale’s Roaring Fork High School and went to Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs. He continues to live here with his beloved family surrounding him.

in some capacity since he was fourteen and is currently the Carbondale Rural Fire Protection Board President. Most people remember Gene from before he retired as the Carbondale Police Chief, however there are three generations of students who know him as their bus driver. Gene’s philosophy is that the best

driving the school bus is a great way to connect – and an opportunity to be a mentor and role model. While serving as police chief, Gene often wore his uniform while driving the bus. He is proud that some students, or “bus kids,”

says that more often than not, when you’re out with Gene someone will want to hug him because he used to be their bus driver

grandkids almost every day,” Gene said. His youngest grandchild is two, and she can’t wait to ride the bus with “Papa.”

When Redstone kids climb on board in the morning to head to school, then in the afternoon to head back home, he greets them by name. He makes a difference every day, as a role model with a positive impact on his “bus kids.” His time behind the wheel is an essential service for the families of the Roaring Fork School District, and an inspiration for the rest of us.

Unlike many cross-country ski areas that are provided by municipalities, Spring Gulch sits on private land where, at no cost, visitors can enjoy 13+ miles of trail that is kept pristine and beautifully groomed through donations and countless volunteer hours. Up valley, the ASPEN SNOWMASS NORDIC TRAIL SYSTEM maintains 60 miles of trails connecting Aspen, Snowmass, and Basalt as one of the largest free, groomed crosscountry ski systems in North America. Trails vary greatly; groomed or ungroomed, and could be on public, U.S. Forest Service lands or private property. Some trails are dog-friendly, and some require your pup to be on a leash. If rolling hills are your happy place on skinny skis, then our local golf courses are for you. ASPEN GOLF CLUB, THE SNOWMASS CLUB, and at RIVER VALLEY RANCH ’s courses are free and open to the public for Nordic skiing. Remote trails, like COAL BASIN ROAD near Redstone and MCCLURE PASS near Marble, offer breathtaking views. Always check weather conditions before you go.
