News from the Kitchen! Not By Caitlin Karrenberg, Kitchen Manager On March 8th, 2014, the Mountain View Market Downtown Kitchen celebrated its one year anniversary of our ribbon cutting ceremony! We opened our doors in February of 2013, and the first year has been really exciting. Some of the highlights of our first year in business include: • We started a Yoga & Lunch partnership with Downtown Desert Yoga! On Wednesdays and Fridays, you can swing by their studio for a 45 minute yoga class and your lunch order from our Kitchen is ready to be picked up when class is over. • Exciting new businesses have opened their doors downtown, including Run Culture (new running shop at 221 N Main St.) and Mas Art (art supply and framing store at 126 Main St.) • We hosted our first live music event, featuring local band Timesquares playing a great show in our parking lot! • Offering a unique, healthy menu including over 80% of ingredients that are organic or locally sourced. • Working with Healthy Kids Las Cruces to launch their healthy restaurant program. • Great articles written about us in the Las Cruces Bulletin, Healthy U magazine, and more! We are looking forward to more exciting partnerships and continued revitalization of the downtown area in the coming year. The new housing complex behind the Las Cruces Sun-News building is nearing completion, bringing more residents to the downtown area. If you haven’t stopped in yet, make sure to come by and check out the local artwork, delicious locally roasted coffee, and cozy atmosphere. We look forward to making you many more tasty food and beverages! Thanks for all of your support and your good appetites! Eat Healthy, Be Happy. Down on the Farm By Nicole Fuchs, Farm Administrator

MVM Farm has been growing in every way possible. We aren’t just growing kale, carrots, and beets; we are growing producers and the MVM Farm itself too! MVM Farm has been expanding the number of high school and college interns we are able to host, the types and quantities of produce, the growing strategies that are used on the farm, our composting operation, and the number of community members we reach. During the past six months, MVM Farm staff has provided over 1,193 hours of instruction and hands-on experiential learning time to high school students, college interns, and community members. Through these learning experiences some students and community members have recognized the greater purpose of the farm. Kayla, a current intern, wrote about the farm and said, “This farm has not only shown my family that I can work hard and still achieve good grades at school while also dealing with different things at home but this farm has also shown me that I can do all these things too. I know that I can achieve more now and by working on the farm I have made friends while also doing something that I love. The continued growth of all aspects of the MVM Farm has meant the need to increase funding to support the activities and programs offered to community members.

On May 6, 2014, MVM Farm is joining more than 300 nonprofits in New Mexico and more than 100 other communities throughout the United States for a national day of local giving. This initiative, “Give Grande New Mexico” is our state’s first Day of Giving and is part of a larger campaign called “Give Local America”. This partnership allows communities like Las Cruces to generate significant funds for causes right in our own backyard. Help MVM Farm raise funds to support our mission as a small diverse farm dedicated to educating and training community members about growing food and local food systems. You can help support MVM Farm and our local food system by making a donation to the MVM Farm on May 6, 2014. In the meantime, you can view our profile on the “Give Grande New Mexico” website: http://www.givegrandenm.org/#npo/mvm-farm. The support gained during this fundraising effort will be important: in addition to the money raised in our community, there are also matching funds available for the MVM Farm. BODy + Soul By Randy Harris, Board Member On the issues of Minimum Wage: The Las Cruces City Council has invited Mountain View Market Co-op’s General Manager, Shahid Mustafa, to participate in a series of three public dialogues on the issue of raising the minimum wage. Mountain View Market Coop starts employees well above the mandated minimum wage. In fact, starting wages at the coop are not determined by the legal minimum, but are in alignment with what’s considered a “livable wage” for Las Cruces – considerably higher than minimum wage. The City Council’s inclusion of our Co-op’s general manager in this series of Great Conversations reflects the city’s commitment to hear all the voices of our community, and to address challenging issues in a collaborative and cooperative process. As we do at the Co-op, this process recognizes the voices of the “membership” of the community. This series of public conversations aligns with the cooperative model, recognizing that “we’re all in this together”, that everyone has a voice and every voice matters. So, in advance of our Annual Member Meeting – Saturday April 12 - you’re also invited to watch or take a seat in the audience for this series of conversations on minimum wage. These conversations will be held in the City Council Chamber on the evenings of April 1st, 3rd, and 8th - from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, and will be live streamed on the internet, broadcast live on CLC/Cable channel 20, and archived for reference. This is an excellent opportunity to engage in a one of our most pressing economic issues and to recognize the distinct significance of the Co-op’s position on wages, relative to that of the larger business community. Come witness first hand the challenges, advantages, and disadvantages of different business and economic models and how they affect our community. Attention Co-op Members! Stay tuned for more information about our upcoming Member Loan Campaign! Our first Member Loan Informational Meeting is on Wednesday, April 23rd from 5 to 6 pm in the Co-op Community Room. Investment packets will be available to pick up at the Courtesy Desk starting Monday, April 21st. Members of the Board of Directors will be available to answer questions about this investment opportunity at this meeting. Can’t attend? Additional Informational Meetings will be scheduled in the upcoming months! Paraben-free! Great news: We are really excited to announce that our Wellness section is now entirely paraben-free! Thanks to Trish, our awesome Wellness Buyer, for making the choice to carry clean products. And just in case you didn’t already know, none of the products we carry are tested on animals. For more info, check out the article about it on our website.
